ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date July 15, 2014

Duet is a wildly comic story of a beautiful and talented young woman in her 20’s living in New York City and her misadventures as she navigates men’s desires and fears. When most women look into a mirror, they see flaws in their body. Some of those “flaws” can end up being the very essence of what some see as a woman’s true beauty. Duet, a talented, sensitive, gorgeous young woman, has an unusual anatomy…one that might overexcite one man, but terrify another. She has to live with this sexual uniqueness and not see herself as a freak. As her father tells her, “They just found a goat with a unicorn horn and he has nothing to be ashamed about.”

Men are drawn to Duet. Her friend, Paula, fixes her up. Most of the men she meets she sees as fools, but one night Duet meets a handsome young man, Oskar, who is successful, sexy, intelligent, witty and seems able to handle her “design.” They fall in love, even though he has an aloofness about him that seems a bit odd. It turns out he has secrets of his own. Paula too falls in love and finds herself involved with the larcenous CEO of a videogame company where he has cooked the books and put subliminal messages into the video games. Oskar is also a wild card and turns out to be connected to Duet in more ways than one.

Duet is a romp full of vibrant, unexpected characters doing unexpected things, as they love, move toward and away from each other. It’s also a metaphor for how we must also risk love, no matter what bodies were given us, and no matter what unusual choices of the heart we make.

••••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: DUET is the latest contemporary, adult storyline from Gay Walley and co-authored by Kurt Haber. The focus of the story is Duet-a woman with an anatomical anomaly that tends to stop men before they get started. This is her story about how she came to live in a world of seemingly normal people but the definition of normal is all a matter of perception.

The storyline follows Duet’s struggle as a beautiful, single woman in the world of dating and sex. Duet’s surprising anatomical differences bring about strange bedfellows with each and every encounter. At times, Duet remains chaste and without a sexual partner fearing it is easier to live with herself than have to explain the tragedy that has become her sexual life.

The reader is pulled into a storyline where secrets from the past now affect the current generation; and where love isn’t always blind when it comes to matters of the heart or body.

Gay Walley has written a thought provoking storyline about the what ifs and maybe’s of a time not so long ago. As Duet hunts down the truth about her ‘complication’, there will be a number of men who want more from Duet than friendship and a glass of wine. Duet is never without the attention of the opposite sex but sometimes the attention is not what it is she is looking for.

DUET is a different kind of love story with a happy for now ‘kind of’ ending. As the people in Duet’s life come and go, so too, does the need for love and understanding from her family and the men in her life. There are awkward moments of misunderstanding in a storyline about a controversial subject that has been hidden for a very long time. Gay Walley does a fascinating job of presenting a probability from a time when the world lost a little of itself.

This is not a story for everyone-there are no romantic overtures; no graphic sex or sexual situations. It is a story about a woman looking for love but in doing so, finds out more about herself than she could have ever imagined. Some readers may take issue with the premise.

My only concern is that the storyline has been promoted as a wildly comic look at a 20 something woman with a sexual uniqueness but to me, there was very little to laugh about. Duet is a woman lost in a world where one is judged by their normalcy and not their ‘uniqueness’. She struggles with heartbreak, depression, rejection and her duplicitous ‘oneness’ realizing that what she is isn’t exactly normal.

TRC: Hi Gay and welcome to The Reading Café.

We would like to start with some background information. Would you please tell us something about yourself?

Follow: Website /

Gay WalleyGay: I live in New York – make an insecure living teaching writing – write books but lately have ventured a bit into plays and film. Fate drew me into that but I have enjoyed it. DUET is my 4th novel out. A film is being made of one of my other novels, THE EROTIC FIRE OF THE UNATTAINABLE.

TRC: Who or what influenced your career in writing?

Gay: I always knew I was a writer. When I was a young girl, one afternoon I was hurt by my mother and what did I do? Go into the basement and write a short story about her. From then on, it seemed there was never a pen (or laptop) out of my hand.

TRC: Would you please tell us something about the premise of your latest release -DUET?

Gay: Duet is about a young woman who has a particular body configuration that no one else has. It could excite men or it could frighten them. Her life is about how she deals with being “different.” She has many adventures, and learns she has to accept herself and be with a man who does the same.

DuetTRC: Which genre do you believe best fits the premise of DUET?

Gay: Literary comedy.

TRC: What made you choose this particular topic for the premise? Do you think some people will find the topic controversial?

Gay: My co-author, Kurt Haber, chose the topic. He found it controversial and exciting. I found making the story work exciting! Yes I think men will find it provocative as a story – what would they do if they met Duet? And women will identify with having to come to terms with one’s body. The good and the bad.

TRC: What should be the role of sex or sexuality in society?

Gay: Sex is intimate and something that is to each of our own taste. It’s a connection and that is very important. It’s not about society, it’s about the person. I believe society has no say in it,and sex is how each of us expresses our imagination, drive and desire.

TRC: What challenges or difficulties (research, logistics, background) did you encounter writing this particular book?

Gay: Well, I had to make it believable (Duet’s body) and her response to it believable. It’s a novel so I did not feel it necessary to “research” but, more, I enjoyed the process of imagining. She has her feelings…and her experiences are those, like most of us. Wanting love, finding love, losing love, finding it where she doesn’t expect it. Getting her work out.

TRC: When writing a storyline, do the characters direct the writing or do you direct the characters?

Gay: Great question. I would say the characters direct the writing. They have their own lives and their desires and strengths and weaknesses drive the story.

TRC: The mark of a good writer is to pull the reader into the storyline so that they experience the emotions along with the characters. What do you
believe a writer must do to make this happen? Where do you believe writer’s fail in this endeavor?

Gay: I think new writers are often afraid to take chances, to delve in and reveal themselves through the characters. I think you have to FEEL the character yourself, admit to those feelings inside YOURSELF, and then write from that place. You have to make sure the dialogue and every detail you give really shows the emotion of the story. That way the reader will FEEL the story.

TRC: On what are you currently working?

Gay: I have been working on a film script about a jazz pianist who is sort of frozen sexually… (from being too long with a cold boyfriend) and how she unlocks. Don’t know if it works…may end up throwing it out but right now playing with it!

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date August 5, 2014

A Connection Series Novella featuring Ben Covington

The story before the love story….

When he lost the only woman he’d ever loved, it seemed there was nothing left to live for.

Even as a boy, all Ben Covington ever wanted was to spend forever with Dahlia London, the beautiful girl next door…then one life-altering decision tore them apart and he was forced to leave her.

Now, despite having returned to win her back, he’s still alone. She’s with someone else—someone she’s never going to leave.

Resigned to a future without his former girlfriend, Ben numbs his broken heart in a haze of liquor and women. But then the only woman who ever even turned his head while he was with his girl reappears unexpectedly. And he’s never forgotten their one incredible night together. But will Ben’s destructive behavior destroy his future with her before it even begins?

••••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: BLURRED is the latest novella in Kim Karr’s contemporary, new adult Connections series. This is Ben Covington’s story-more of a build up to the present-with flashbacks and memories. Blurred also runs parallel to some of the timeline in Mended (Connections #3).

Told from first person POV (Ben) BLURRED follows Ben in the days, weeks, months and years from the time he met Dahlia, through his time spent in New York, and to the present where he will (once again) meet the woman with whom he had a one night affair back in college.

Kim Karr takes the reader on a journey where one man will hit rock bottom-falling fast and hard-following his return to California where the life he once loved has all but been destroyed. As a journalist Ben was caught up in a story that affected every part of his life and to keep the people he loved safe from harm, Ben did the unthinkable. Upon his return he was unprepared for the fallout and the changes that accompanied his return. From New York to California to Australia and back, we are pulled into the mayhem and destruction that has become part of Ben’s every day life. And like a fine line that has been ‘blurred’ Ben actions, whether intentional or not, have not gone unnoticed.

As for Ben hitting rock bottom, the vehicle used to ‘show’ his drop left me with feelings of unease. What happened appeared to be out of character-an act I felt was used to test the tepid waters of erotic literature and not something I felt belonged in this particular story or series.

BLURRED is the introduction to Ben Covington’s story. From a respected and award winning to journalist to finding himself in a position to ask for help, Ben is a man whose difficult and sometimes poorly made choices have hurt those that he loves. From his mother and sister, best friend and fiancé, Ben’s actions have affected every life that he has touched or entered.

Kim Karr is an amazing author whose Connections series is growing like the branches of a tree. Everyone we meet will be ‘connected’ in some way-some good, some bad-but all will find a place and a happily ever after in the stories and novellas of the Connections series.

I live in Florida with my husband and four kids. I’ve always had a love for reading books and writing. Being an English major in college, I wanted to teach at the college level but that was not to be. I went on to receive an MBA and became a project manager until quitting to raise my family. I currently work part-time with my husband and full-time embracing one of my biggest passions—writing.

I wear a lot of hats! Writer, book-lover, wife, soccer-mom, taxi driver, and the all around go-to person of the family. However, I always find time to read. One of my favorite family outings use to be taking my kids to the bookstore or the library. Today, my oldest child is in college and my twins are juniors so they no longer go with me on these outings. And although I don’t need to go to the actual store anymore because I have the greatest device ever invented—a Kindle, I still do. There’s nothing like a paperback. So now my four year old and I make dates out of going to the bookstore–it’s time I love and cherish.

I like to believe in soulmates, kindred spirits, true friends, and Happily-Ever-Afters. I love to drink champagne, listen to music, and hopes to always stay young at heart.

Silver Shadows (Bloodlines #5) by Richelle Mead-a review

Silver Shadows by Richelle Mead (Blood Lines Series #5)-a review

Silver Shadows July 14

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Amazon.uk/ Barnes and Noble / KOBO / The Book Depository

About the book: Release Date: July 29, 2014

In The Fiery Heart, Sydney risked everything to follow her gut, walking a dangerous line to keep her feelings hidden from the Alchemists.

Now in the aftermath of an event that ripped their world apart, Sydney and Adrian struggle to pick up the pieces and find their way back to each other. But first, they have to survive.

For Sydney, trapped and surrounded by adversaries, life becomes a daily struggle to hold on to her identity and the memories of those she loves. Meanwhile, Adrian clings to hope in the face of those who tell him Sydney is a lost cause, but the battle proves daunting as old demons and new temptations begin to seize hold of him. . . .

Their worst fears now a chilling reality, Sydney and Adrian face their darkest hour in this heart-pounding fifth installment in the New York Times bestselling Bloodlines series, where all bets are off.

Review:

Very few times have I ever sat down to write a review and can’t come up with the first line. I literally have too many thoughts going through my head about this one. The story picks up shortly after The Fiery Heart ends. Those familiar with the story know that Sydney was taken against her will by the powers that be within the Alchemist organization for becoming too “chummy” with the Moroi (the vampires). If they only knew………….

Sydney was held, and basically tortured psychologically for months. Once she is released from the “cleansing” cell, she knows that she has to play along in order to make the Alchemists believe that she is on the mend and on the path to redemption. She finds herself in the ultimate game of cat and mouse and knows that if she doesn’t play her cards right, she’ll never see the light of day.

Adrian is utterly devastated that he hasn’t been able to contact Sydney in their dreams. Unfortunately, for Adrian, he falls back into his old habit of drinking to numb the pain. He begins to lose hope, and then there’s a knock at the door. I don’t know who was more shocked when he opened the door, him or me!! He is whisked back to Court and tries to enlist the help of their queen and his friend, Lissa and her guardian, Rose. But, Lissa knows that it’s a slippery slope and can’t risk her fragile reign to go up against the Alchemists when it isn’t one of her subjects in danger.

Despair descends on Adrian and he soon descends into a routine that he knows all too well: drinking and partying. Thankfully, the pity party doesn’t last long and he’s able to finally connect with Sydney and knows that she is alive! However, the one thing he needs to know is very elusive. He needs to know where she is and she has no idea. Adrian springs into action and heads back to Palm Springs and a plan is formed. He enlists the help everyone who will listen to him, and soon enough, the plan is enacted. Will they truly be able to get to Sydney in time? Will their crew be able to get in and get her out? Oh my friends, you’ll have to read to find out. Because as fans of this series know all too well, there isn’t always a happy ending…………

Richelle Mead is a phenomenal author. Her YA series, Vampire Academy (which Bloodlines spun off of), is one of my absolute favorites and I never thought that I’d like this particular series as well as that one. Well, I’m a big girl and can admit that I was wrong!! She has a different spin on vampires and the world and it more than works. It works WELL! Her supporting characters, all of which we get to see in Silver Shadows, are such an integral part of the story, but you never feel overwhelmed with the amount of information that IS this story. I wish that I could share more about some of the things that happened in this one, but don’t want to spoil it for anyone. You also don’t have the quintessential love triangle in this series as you normally get in a lot of YA series. At least, not with the main characters.

All of Mead’s books grab you on the first page, and this was no exception. This one was a bit brutal in the Alchemist’s treatment of Sydney and her fellow detainees, but was necessary to portray just how far the Alchemists will go to get what they want. If you’ve not read Mead, you are missing out on a fabulous ride. And, even though it’s YA, I can’t fathom anyone who is a fan of paranormal with a twist not liking this series. The downside? I have to wait on the next and I cannot wait. Well done Richelle Mead, very very very well done!!

Shelter Me by Catherine Mann – a Review

Shelter MeAmazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / The Book Depository

Description:
Nestled in the sunny fields of Tennessee lies the McDaniel family’s Second Chance Ranch Animal Rescue. Two new arrivals are on their way, but only one is the four-legged kind.

Staff Sergeant Mike Kowalski wants only one thing after he gets home from Iraq: to sleep in a king-sized bed with clean sheets. But first, he has to hand off his fallen commander’s dog, Trooper, to his family without handing off his heart to Sierra…

Sierra McDaniel needs a break. Her family life is crazy, and when she’s not mucking out kennels, she’s slogging through grad school. Sierra certainly doesn’t want another dog, especially one that reminds her of her father. And she definitely doesn’t want to see Mike with that charming smile of his…

But Trooper has a mission of his own. Before too long Mike is moving to the ranch to lend a hand—and hoping for his own second chance with Sierra.

Review:

Shelter Me by Catherine Mann is the first book in her new Second Chance Ranch series. I have been really enjoying these romances that take place in small towns, and if they have animals as part of the story, that makes it even better. Shelter Me hooked me early on as it was a sweet heartwarming story of a family trying to recover from a tragedy in Iraq, of a soldier who comes home to renewed feelings for his ex-girlfriend, and a dog, who is determined to take care of his new family. What is not to love?

Sergeant Mike Kowalski is coming home from Iraq, and he is bringing with him, Trooper, his late commanding officer’s dog. The McDaniel family is waiting for him, as was Sierra, the girl he left behind. Sierra is our heroine, and she knows Mike has had a hard time dealing with her father’s death, as her family has. But she does not want to become involved with him. Sierra still has feelings for Mike, but she doesn’t want to get hurt again, and Mike will not stay too long. He plans on becoming a career Army man, much like her father was, something she wants nothing to be part of.

Trooper is one of the stars of this story, and it was really cute to have some small parts where Trooper talked to us. Trooper gives them all a run for it, but of course they don’t know he is trying to bring them together. Some very funny parts. Nicely done.

This is a wonderful story, with the McDaniel family at the center of it all. Lacey is the mother, who runs Second Chance Ranch Animal Rescue, and she has her hands full. She is having a hard time trying to recover from her husband’s death; trying to help her 15 year old son from his withdrawal and rebellion; taking care of her father in-law, who is becoming deeper into dementia. Sierra is the only one able to help her mother, as she is also trying to finish grad school. The ranch is overrun with rescue animals, whom they put with permanent and foster homes, only to continue to rescue more at a pace they can’t keep up with. But the town loves Lacey and what she does to help all rescue animals.

Enter into this mix, Mike, who wants nothing better then to give the McDaniel’s Trooper and go home to sleep. Best laid plans do not always happen, as Trooper has other ideas. Mike eventually will stay at the Ranch to help the McDaniel’s fix up the Ranch, and doing so, he renews his own feelings for Sierra. This was a very hot sexy romance between Mike and Sierra, and believe me when I say their scenes could have melted my kindle. Though the future for them seemed slim, we found ourselves rooting for them.

The romance was part of this fabulous story, which pulled on many of our emotions. You are part of the McDaniel family all the way, and you feel their sadness, frustration, love, sexual tension for both Lacey and Sierra, but you will find yourself laughing out loud a few times, or tears some others. Catherine Mann has written a wonderful story that has a little bit of everything, and some wonderful characters, and animals. I cannot wait for the next book.

Snap All That Jazz

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date June 27, 2014

Nik and Jazz, both employees of Kandesky Enterprises and passionate lovers, are having a tumultuous time. Are their differences too great? She’s a contemporary, hip, young career woman working in the fast-changing world of celebrity gossip journalism in Los Angeles. He’s a 500-year old vampire living in Kiev, Ukraine and running the Kandesky Munitions factories. She deals with celebs and sun, he deals with terrorists and dark.
Is their overpowering attraction enough to build a life-long future, or will their relationship fizzle out before Maxie’s and Jean-Louis’ wedding, dying faster than a Fourth of July sparkler?

••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: It’s here SNAP fans, IT’S HERE! If you’ve been reading this wonderful series like I have and totally enjoying the wonderful world of the Kandesky vampires you’re in for a treat!

This is Jazz and Nik’s story, somewhat continued from the last book, and it’s incredible. Jazz was frightened by the whole firefight thing and Nik being so injured and needed some space to get her head around everything. She returned to LA and her job at SNAP and tried to immerse herself in work. However, memories of Nik couldn’t be dismissed.

Meanwhile, Nik healed and tried to also get back to his job in the munitions branch of the family business, but found his focus was altered by constant thoughts and memories of Jazz. A lack of focus in his business could prove fatal, so he made arrangements to visit LA and Jazz for some much needed love and fun!

Jazz cleared her calendar and they had lots of great fun (pardon me while I swoon…) and adventure, perhaps a bit too much adventure?

Ok, that’s the gist…this, of course, is a must read! Like the rest of the series Ms. Drier has woven an intricate tale of two completely different societies and cultures and the issues of falling in love and the adjustments needed to make room in their lives for each other.

The issues of an incredibly handsome male whose emotions and cultural instincts haven’t been changed since the time he became a vampire are very interesting. The same can be said of the emotions and instincts of a twentieth century woman who has grown up being independent and emotionally damaged from a previous relationship. Ms. Drier has had her hands full putting these two wonderful and interesting people in a relationship, but as usual, she has done an exceptional job! We also get more of Maxi and Jean Louis as they marry and begin a new life (you’ll love the changing…spoiler)

Grab your favorite beverage, some snacks (cause you won’t want to stop), (personally, I found a fan handy). This is a series you can read each book as a stand-alone, but it’s soooo much better to read from the beginning!

Enjoy everyone, I really, really, really love it!

To say that Tate screwed up royally is quite an understatement. I’ve known all along, while reading the first two books in this trilogy, that Chessy and Tate’s book would be intense. After all, she is his submissive and those tend to be intense stories as a rule, but when we see what happens when Tate totally drops the ball and breaks the number one rule of being a dominate………….Let’s just say “cringe-worthy” just does not do it justice. Her safety and care is supposed to be his utmost priority, but as the blurb about the books says, “……..a business call at the wrong time threatens everything”. Not only does it threaten Chessy’s safety, it also threatens to destroy their relationship. Because for a time, it DID destroy her faith and utter trust in him.

I read an interview recently that Maya Banks had given. In it, she said that she has always been interested in writing stories that happen AFTER the couple’s initial HEA. Because, let’s face it. Most everyone’s relationships are great in the beginning, but then life happens and things kind of fall to the wayside. Taking it All IS that story. Tate was so consumed with work the he let his relationship with Chessy take a backseat. And, after that ‘business call at the wrong’ time happens, I honestly thought, even if for just a minute, that they might not be able to get past what happened. Because what happens was shocking to me. Like, screaming at my Kindle shocking……… I literally didn’t think I could get past it and like Tate again. But, I warmed up to him. Only after a lot of groveling on his part! LOL!!

Maya Banks has once again written a gripping story that is ultimately about the long, bumpy road back to each other and forgiveness. And redemption. If you are a fan of Maya Banks, you will not be disappointed. And, as I’ve said before, if you’re not reading Maya’s stories, you’re sorely missing out!! I just hope that in the future, we might get to see a glimpse of the awesome people we met in this trilogy. Well done Maya Banks!!

At a benefit dinner, community activist Maria Cervantes overhears two men plotting a terrorist attack that could rock Miami to its core. But before she can alert authorities, she’s almost killed in a massive explosion—and wakes up in a hospital with no memory of what happened. As the sole survivor of the attack, she is now a person of interest to the NSA—and especially to Agent Cade O’Reilly. Because Maria is the one woman Cade has never been able to forget.

Years ago, they were closer than either was willing to admit—until Cade disappeared when Maria needed him most. Now he’s sticking by her, whether she likes it or not. Because the memories locked inside her mind could hold vital clues to the next attack. Because terrorists want her dead—and because he never wants to let her go again.

REVIEW: BOUND TO DANGER is the second release in Katie Reus’s adult, contemporary romance Deadly Ops action/suspense series focusing on a group of Special Ops agents. Although it is the second storyline in the series, it can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. This is community activist Maria Cervantes and NSA agent Cade O’Reilly’s storyline.

The premise focuses on a terrorist attack at a local mansion where the rich and famous had gathered. The only survivor is Maria Cervantes and the NSA wants to know why and what she knows. Enter Cade O’Reilly-Maria’s brother’s former commander in Afghanistan-and the man that walked out of Maria’s life eight years earlier. BOUND TO DANGER is a second chance storyline that places Maria in the line of fire when the terrorist cell that perpetrated the explosion set their sights on other targets including Maria. How much does Maria know and how did she survive the explosion?

The relationship between Maria and Cade is a friends to lovers/second chance story. Maria and Cade became email ‘pen pals’ while Cade was stationed in Afghanistan with Maria’s brother Riel. As the lone survivor of a rescue mission that went horribly wrong, Cade has had to deal with the guilt for eight years-and in doing so, walked out of Maria’s life without any explanation as to why. Now that Maria has been targeted and questioned, Cade’s protective alpha side wants Maria safe so that he can rekindle what was started years before.

The secondary characters include the members of the terrorist organization, their intended victims, and the men and women who serve in the NSA. Jack Stone from TARGETED (Deadly Ops #1) joins Cade and the team in Miami which gives the series a sense of cohesion and familiarity.

Katie Reus has the amazing ability of pulling the reader onto the front lines of the action and drama. BOUND TO DANGER is a fast paced, intelligent and spirited story of suspense, mystery, intrigue and murder. We watch as two people are pulled closer together by their wants, their needs and their building love. It is a story of heartbreak and grief; friendship and love; betrayal and revenge. What goes on behind closed doors will become the catalyst for an organization that wants revenge for acts so revolting, that anyone who stands in their way will become fair game in an international war.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date August 5, 2014

Her name is Bonde, Jane Bonde . . .

A beautiful and eligible member of the ton, Jane has more than a few secrets: she’s one of the Crown’s most elite agents. She may be deadly, but she doesn’t know a thing about fashion, flirtation, or love . . . until Dominic Griffyn shakes up her carefully stirred world and asks her to be his bride. He’s exactly the kind of man she’s not looking for. And he’s dangerous, because falling into his arms is so much more satisfying than saving England from her enemies.

He’s an improper gentleman who needs a wife. . .

Tall, dark, and tortured, Dominic Griffyn is haunted by demons from his past. When his stepfather insists that he marry, Dominic allows himself to hope that the beautiful but mysterious Miss Bonde might help him forget his troubles. As they grow closer, it’s clear that there’s more to Jane than danger. She might be just what his neglected heart needs.

5 out of 5 for this reader folks!

BONDE … Jane Bonde .. shaken not stirred!

Man this was one FANTASTIC book. The third book in Shana Galen’s Lord and Lady Spy series, Love and Let Spy was by far my fave (and I adored the previous books too). If you are a James Bond fan you will appreciate the parallels you will find in this book and likely chuckle at the backassward ways Shana portrays them. I am a huge Bond fan and was already a fan of this series, so this was a super fun book, full of action, loving/hot moments and a mystery left to be solved.

Jane Bonde is spy lady extraordinaire. Beyond dedicated to her job, she is completely shocked when her aunt and uncle (also the head of this spy organization) tell her she MUST marry. Frustrated already after an elusive enemy once again escapes her clutches, she is ready to refuse her uncle’s decision and dig her heels in … then she meets her betrothed.

Dominic Griffyn is one hot mess. As the step-son to a Marquess (his mother was an actress who married well when he was younger) he has been told that he must marry or be disowned. Seeing as he loves being the family horse breeder he is resentful when he is ordered to change his lifestyle. Dominic comes with a horrific past that haunts him and refuses to allow him to have a proper “society” marriage, so the prospect of marriage is a NO GO … until he meets his betrothed.

These two are so much similar in ways they can never know. Dominic knows there is something different about Jane (I mean how many ladies scale walls, sneak out at night and wear a daggers in their corsets) and decides to assist her ventures. Jane is quite peeved that this man seems to feel the need to protect her. HER .. an ELITE SPY! That and the stolen kisses, chemistry filled attraction .. really she has more important things to do … like save England!

We are brought on quite the adventure in this story. These two characters were incredible together and bit by bit the layers are peeled back. Jane shows Dominic just how different she truely is when he finally reveals his past, and she never treats him with a pitied word or too kind of hand. Many secrets are revealed, truths surface and dangers occur, but this all just adds to the anticipation and thrill I felt reading this story!

Looking for a great regency spy book with a touch of yummy! Check out the series by Shana Galen for sure!

HAPPY READING! 🙂

Interview

TRC: Hi Shana and welcome to The Reading Café. Congratulations on the release of LOVE AND LET SPY.

Shana GalenShana: Thanks so much for having me.

TRC: We would like to start with some background information. Please tell us something about yourself?

Follow Shana: Goodreads / Facebook / Twitter

Shana: I’m a wife, a mom, and a former English teacher. I’ve been writing fulltime for the last 5 years, and I’ve published almost twenty books.

TRC: Who or what influenced your career in writing?

Shana: I’d have to say my grandmother was a big influence. She was always writing poetry and she self-published a devotional book back in the days when no one was self-publishing yet. She died in May of this year at age 95, and just a week or so before she passed away, she wrote a new poem. The love of words and writing is in my blood.

TRC: What was the factor on your decision to write historical romance?

Shana: I’ve also written two contemporaries, but I tend to gravitate toward historical romances because I’ve been told over and over that’s where my voice fits best. I also enjoy escaping this world into the world of the past. I do enjoy reading contemporary romances, but I don’t know that I’d like to live in one for 4 months while I wrote it. It might seem too much like my real life.

TRC: Which time period would you describe as the most ‘romantic’ as it pertains to historical romance?

Shana: This might seem strange considering I write Regency-set books, but I think the medieval period is the most romantic. I love the knights and the castles and the simplicity of that period. I mean, I know romance novels romanticize every period, and there wasn’t anything romantic about the plague, but in some ways the past seems simpler to me—no cell phones, racing to soccer practice, or trying to decide which of ten choices of apple to buy in the store.

Love and Let SpyTRC: When not writing, what do you do to relax?

Shana: I love to read. I wish I had more time to read. My daughter is getting a little older now, and I can actually read chapter books to her. When I get desperate, I pull out Pinkey Pie and the Ponypalooza Party, and at least I’m reading something.

TRC: LOVE AND LET SPY is the third instalment and August 2014 release in your Lord and Lady Spy series. Would you please tell us something about the premise?

Shana: It’s basically James Bond, except James is Jane. She’s the best spy the Crown has to offer, and she’s single-minded when it comes to completing missions. But she doesn’t count on meeting Dominic Griffyn. He’s not the typical Bond love interest. He’s dark and complex, and I think he’s as interesting a character as Jane.

TRC: How many books do you have planned for the series?

Shana: This is the last. I won’t say I’ll never do another, but I don’t have any more planned at this moment.

Lord and Lady Spy Series

TRC: Do you believe an author should stay true to the time period when writing historical fiction?

Shana: It depends how you define “true to the time period.” If you mean that the characters should dress as the people then dressed and use the same conveyances, etc., yes. If you mean that women can’t play the part of a pirate or a spy in historical fiction, then no. It’s fiction, and while I do try to be as accurate as possible, I want to make my books accessible to the modern reader.

TRC: What challenges or difficulties (historical research, logistics, background) did you encounter writing this particular story and series?

Shana: I’d say the hero was the toughest to get right. He has a dark background, and without giving any spoilers, I wanted to treat that in a dignified way but still be true to the time period. He also has an affinity for horses, and I found myself researching a lot about horses and colic.

TRC: What is next for your JEWELS OF THE TON series?

Jewels of the Ton

Shana: I don’t have any further plans for that series either. This has been quite a year of endings for me. I wrapped up Jewels of the Ton, Lord and Lady Spy, and my Misadventures in Matrimony series.

TRC: What are your thoughts on writing a series and ending an instalment with a major cliff hanger?

Shana: I’m okay with it. I don’t do it because I always like for a new reader to pick up any of my books and be able to jump in without having read any other books in the series. But I do read books with cliffhangers, and I enjoy them. They sure make me buy the next in the series!

TRC: When writing a storyline, do the characters direct the writing or do you direct the characters?

Shana: At the beginning, I tend to direct the characters, and then at some point, they usually take over and direct me. Often I look back at the beginning of the book and see that my characters are not very much like I’d envisioned them on those early pages. I have to do a lot of revision. I have written books where the characters didn’t “come to life” for me until very late in the book. Those books are always tough to write and often frustrating because by the time I finally “get” the character, the book is almost done. Then I have to go back and fix it.

TRC: The mark of a good writer is to pull the reader into the storyline so that they experience the emotions along with the characters. What do you believe a writer must do to make this happen? Where do you believe writer’s fail in this endeavor?

Shana: If an author wants a reader to experience the same emotions as the character, the reader must identify with that character. She has to see something of herself in the hero or heroine. That’s why it’s so important for authors who write strong characters to make them vulnerable too. Writers fail to touch readers when the characters aren’t either sympathetic or relatable.

TRC: Writer’s Block is a very real phenomenon. How do you handle the pressures and anxiety of writer’s block?

Shana: I don’t have writer’s block so much as a lack of time to write. Lately I’ve been overwhelmed with the sheer amount of work on my plate, and I’ve actually just avoided it. This isn’t like me at all. Normally, I make a list and just go down it, methodically checking things off. But I think it’s a mark of how overwhelmed I’ve been that I just kind of gave up for a few days. Now I’m back to my trusty to-do list.

TRC: Many authors bounce ideas and information with other authors or friends and family. With whom do you bounce ideas?

Shana: I like to brainstorm with other authors. I have a brainstorming group with Robyn DeHart, Margo Maguire, Anne Mallory, and Emily McKay. I also brainstorm with my friends Sophie Jordan and Tera Lynn Childs.

TRC: What three things would you like to accomplish in the next five years?

Shana: I’d love to make the USA Today or NYT list. I’ve been published almost a decade, and that’s always been a goal of mine. I’d also like to go to Hawaii. I’ve never been. Finally, I’d love to spend about a month in the UK with my husband and daughter in about 10 years, so I want to start saving for that so it can become a reality.

TRC: What is something that few, if any people, know about you?

Shana: I’ve been a vegetarian for 28 years.

TRC: On what are you currently working?

Shana: I’m working on a new series, The Covent Garden Cubs. It’s about a gang of thieves and how their lives intersect with a noble family, the Derrings. The first book is Earls Just Want to Have Fun, and it’s about the Earl of Dane and a female thief, Marlowe, who disrupts his life and all his preconceived notions.

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Shana: I’m also working on an anthology that will be out in October with Miranda Neville, Carolyn Jewel, and Grace Burrowes. It’s titled Christmas in The Duke’s Arms and my novella features characters from Love and Let Spy.
