•••••••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: DAMAGE DONE is the third storyline in M.J. Schiller’s adult, contemporary Real Romance Collections series. Each book is a stand alone novel, not connected or interconnected to any of the previous storylines. Damage Done is the story of one family / two men-Teddy Passmore McKee and his son Michael Patrick McKee. The storyline covers approximately fifty years starting in 1960 to the present, when a then five year old Teddy McKee discovered life was never going to be easy.

Set in Ireland, DAMAGE DONE looks at choices made and the damage done when these choices result in heartbreak, destruction and death. We follow Teddy McKee from a young boy with a physical handicap whose earlier years have left him jaded and without the support of family and friends. Meeting Sean Hennessey will start a twelve year old Teddy on a downward spiral that does not stop for close to fifty years resulting in the breakup of his family, the loss of his freedom and a blight on the next generation. The sins of the father will destroy everything and everyone that comes in contact with Teddy McKee.

Told from third person point of view, DAMAGE DONE is a romantic narrative but not necessarily a tale of romance and love. It is a story about two men whose choices in life have affected the places and people that they meet. It is a story of passion, pain, forgiveness and hope but also a story that does not delve too deeply into the mind or the emotions of the leading characters.

The world building focuses on one family’s choices and the people they meet along the way. The secondary characters are colorful and drive a good portion of the story-in other words these characters set into motion the choices that will affect both Teddy and his son.

MJ Schiller’s DAMAGE DONE is an intriguing look at the ‘damage done’ or ‘the snowball affect’ of one man’s choices and another man’s sins.

guest post

Good morning! I am so glad to be back at The Reading Café talking about my latest release, DAMAGE DONE, an Irish romantic suspense. It may seem a little different for me, as the majority of my books are rock star romances, but it actually is similar in a lot of ways to my other romances. For one, I never stray too far from music. Michael is not a rock star—not by a long shot—but he is a musician, and a talented one. He plays rock music, but on the local level. Perhaps he hasn’t been discovered yet. (Hmm…do I see a sequel in the works?)

So why did I choose to write Michael and Tess’s story in the first place? It all began with the line, “Even through bloodshot eyes he could tell she was different.” That line kept playing over and over in my head until I was forced to explore it. Who is “he?” Why are his eyes bloodshot, and what makes “her” different? I decided the bloodshot eyes were from late hours, drinking and womanizing. (Maybe he’s a rock star after all!) But why? Why is he living his life this way?

That’s where the idea of DAMAGE DONE came into play. We all suffer our damages, just in different ways. You know what I mean? Those childhood scars that never quite seem to leave us. For example, growing up in an abusive home, like my character Chad Evans from TRAPPED UNDER ICE. Those sorts of experiences, especially in our formative years, leave a mark on us. Permanently change us, and it is up to us to rise above those circumstances, to adjust, to heal. Sometimes it takes meeting the right person to make us want to change and improve ourselves. For Michael, that is Tess. Tess has had her own damage done to her. Together Michael and Tess help each other to open up and trust again and a wonderful, lasting romance begins.

I’ve always been drawn to this idea of two people who have been hurt before mending each other, becoming each other’s salvation. Such a powerful thought! And it’s not good enough for only one of them to need the other, it needs to be a joint union of broken hearts that makes for one indestructible love. Sigh. I love my job! Okay. Enough of my blabbering. Why don’t I tell you a little bit more about DAMAGE DONE.

When an unhappy youth leaves him damaged, will Teddy Mckee be able to find love?

excerpt

“Tessie…” He offered again. “We have to get out of here.”
She remained frozen in her spot, staring blindly over the cliff. He moved a step closer and gently grasped her elbow. “Tess—”
She whirled around and his heart caught in his chest as he stared into her wild green eyes. Tears shone on her damp cheeks, glimmering in the moonlight like trails of scattered diamonds. “Nay, Michael,” she said, her words coming out choked. “I have to tell them the truth. It’s my fault. …I k-killed him.” She sobbed.
He looked at her sadly, begging her, “Let me help you.”
The back door creaked open and light spilled out from the bar across the grass, startling them. He saw Jimmy Flynn’s outline in the doorway. “They’re out here!” he yelled.
Without waiting for a response, Michael took Tess’s arm and steered her along the cliff’s edge. He stepped over the railing and helped her to the other side as well. They stood on a narrow ledge. To the left a trail dropped off toward the sea. He led her skittering down the path, loose rock pebbling the beach far below. He had taken the pathway many a night when he was drunk and feeling particularly reckless. Tonight he hurried over it with only self-preservation and Tess’s safety in mind.
They heard voices above them, coming from every direction as searchers fanned out along the top of the cliff. Their eyes met. They hardly dared to breathe. A flashlight beam ventured over the railing and along the cliff face. She clutched his hand, squeezing it until he lost feeling in his fingers. He tried to flatten himself even more tightly against the rock face, wishing it would somehow melt and absorb them. Several seconds passed and the beam of light was joined by another, and another, each swinging away, and then toward them again.
He grabbed a quick look at the churning sea below then closed his eyes for a second, and his stomach dropped. He took a deep breath before turning his head to look at Tess. Her eyes were closed and her lips were moving fervently, but she emitted no sound. He swallowed, wondering again why the sight of her affected him so. After several minutes a voice called out, “You won’t get away with this, Mikey.” Had someone seen them? He heard Jimmy Flynn mutter, “Wherever they are, we won’t find them tonight.” One by one the lights disappeared until only a solitary beam shone.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date October 7, 2014

A new love will test the boundaries of passion between a privileged boy next door and the tattooed, blue-haired girl who helps him embrace his wild side…

Nate has developed quite a playboy reputation around campus. It’s not that he doesn’t respect or trust women; he doesn’t trust himself. The men in Nate’s family are prone to abusive behavior—a dirty secret that Nate’s been running from his entire life—so Nate doesn’t do relationships. But he can’t help himself around one girl…

Jessie is strong, independent, and works at a tattoo parlor. Nate can’t resist getting close to her, even if it’s strictly a friendship. But it doesn’t take long for Nate to admit that what he wants with Jessie is more than just friendly.

With Jessie, he can be himself and explore what he’s always felt was a terrifying darkness inside him. Even when Nate begins to crave her in a way that both shocks and horrifies him, Jessie still wants to know every part of him. Testing their boundaries together will take a trust that could render them inseparable… or tear them apart

••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: PROMISE ME THIS is the fourth installment in Christina Lee’s contemporary, new adult Between Breaths romance series. This is tattoo artist Nate Connors and Jessie Walters storyline. Although this is the fourth book in the series, it can be read as a standalone without too much difficulty.

Told from alternating first person points of view (Jessie and Nate) the premise follows the building relationship between Nate-an architectural engineering student/tattoo artist and art major/tattoo shop receptionist Jessie. Nate, a rich kid riding on his daddy’s dollar, has a reputation with the ladies-a one night stand kind of guy. He doesn’t do relationships and the secrets that he carries are heartbreaking and dark.

Jessie struggles with paying the bills. As she pursues a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree specializing in photography Jessie has had to cut her studies back to part time. When Nate makes a suggestion for her latest class assignment, Jessie jumps at the opportunity and invites Nate along for the ride.

PROMISE ME THIS is a friends to lovers storyline that is heartbreaking in its presentation of a young man whose family history is abusive and destructive. Nate is not what he appears to be. The emotional aftershock of his mother’s abuse at the hands of his father has left Nate empty and withdrawn. To hide this darkness Nate looks to the many women who offer up a night in bed or a quickie in the bathroom at the local pub. To this, Nate’s reputation as the campus ‘man whore’ finds Jessie at odds with the man she has come to know.

The relationship between Jessie and Nate begins as friends and co-workers but the attraction to one another is immediate. Having never acted on their feelings, Nate and Jessie will discover that they are the yin to the others yang: the black to the white. Jessie will become Nate’s heart and soul; she will anchor Nate when the past becomes the present; she will support, love and offer up herself to the man who will steal her heart.

The world building continues with the inclusion of several of the previous storyline characters and the ever present backdrop of the Raw Ink Tattoo studio and Zach’s Bar. The secondary characters are colorful and relatable; they could be anyone’s best friend or lover. Because this is a character driven storyline, most of the premise follows Jessie and Nate’s developing relationship.

Christina Lee offers up an emotional storyline of family and betrayal; heartbreak and abuse; learning to love and letting go. PROMISE ME THIS is a story with a broken hero, a strong heroine and a love story with a happily ever after. Christina Lee’s BETWEEN BREATHS series is a welcome addition to the world of New Adult storylines.

REVIEW

5 out of 5 for this reader folks!

Responsible reviewer alert. This is a hard core motorcycle club series. You WILL find extreme language, violence, drug use, lots of sex, abuse, severe angst, and lots of “OMG did that just happen?” moments. You WILL also find some incredible characters, family bonds that run crazy deep, yummy hot bikers who like their naughty and love deep, tough woman who love their tough men and a story line so completely engaging that you will have trouble putting this book down.

Man Kathryn Kelly, you write one hell of a book. Misbehaviour is the third book (with some amazing novellas in between) of the Death Dwellers MC series. This story focuses on Matthew “Val” Taylor and Zoann Donovan (the Prez’s sister). These two are so damaged together and apart, it’s a wonder if they ever really find their way. With a child already born and another on the way, it’s incredible the lengths that these two go to hurt the other and then on the other page love each other. It’s such a contrast … but some how it adds to this brilliant storyline.

The book goes into the past and while some secrets were revealed in the previous books, this time Kathryn takes us into the gut wrenching depths. I tell you, knowing what happened in the past and then reading a first person POV is completely different. Zoann has been a serious bitch in the past few books and many times I wanted to smack her .. but after reading her story I wanted to just give her a big hug. Same goes with Val. We are taken back into present time where the last book left off and all the other pivotal characters have a strong presence. There are people that want to take the Death Dwellers down and our bikers will go to great lengths to protect their club.

I am not going into any details of this book as there is so much and it’s such a complicated story line. You absolutely need to read the first books of this series. I will say that while there is so much ugly, it only highlights the pretty all that much more. I will warn you .. if you are an emotional reader like I am, then you will be absolutely exhausted after reading this. I joke with Kathryn Kelly that I have to get into a certain mind set to read one of her books .. by the end I feel like I have been on a roller coaster in hell and heaven and I need to read a a gushy fairytale to sort me out. LOL

If you can handle the grit and grime please give this series a go. It’s so unique than other MC series out there and I applaud Kathryn Kelly for going to certain places that other authors will not go to. Thank you for another amazing book that once again leaves me wanting for more. Thank you for making me fall in love with so perfectly imperfect characters. THANK YOU!

An erotic paranormal romance…
Dimitri LeBlanc, sexy and charismatic beta of Acadian Wolves, survives a brutal attack after his wolf succumbs to a dark force, threatening his very existence. Waking up, tied to a bed, his amusement transforms into lust as a beautiful stranger heals his beast. Intrigued by his mysterious savior, the tables quickly turn, when in the heat of a dark desert night, he rescues her from a barbaric Alpha. Dimitri is inexplicably drawn to the alluring woman, and the discovery that she’s his mate rouses his hunger to claim her as his own.

Gillian Michel, a New York City photographer, conceals a secret hybrid past and mystical abilities. An entire lifetime, she’s deliberately avoided wolves, but a seductive encounter with an irresistible beta leaves her craving his touch, his lips on hers. Passion ignites her desire, leaving her yearning to submit to the powerful wolf who tests her sexual limits.

Deep in the heart of New Orleans, Dimitri and Gillian seek a cure to the parasite maligning his mighty beast. Still on the run from a malevolent force, they lure their enemy into the bayou. Will Gillian sacrifice her gifts to save the man she loves, destroying her own immortality? And will Dimitri eradicate the evil that has invaded his soul while protecting his mate from an adversary who threatens to kill them both?

Warning: This book contains several erotic love scenes, including m/f/m menage, and is intended for adult readers only.

•••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: DIMITRI is the sixth instalment in Kym Grosso’s adult, contemporary Immortals of New Orleans paranormal, romance series. This is the Acadian Wolves beta Dimitri LeBlanc and hybrid shifter/photographer Gillian Michel’s storyline. Although Dimitri is the sixth in the series it can be read as a stand alone without too much difficulty. Any pertinent information from previous storylines is revealed when necessary to the premise. Please note: there are some graphic sexual M/F/M scenes-all consensual and erotic.

At the end of Leopold’s Wicked Embrace Dimitri is attacked by a rival wolf pack as he endeavors to protect a female shifter from assault. Without the ability to shift, Dimitri is left unprotected and the resulting attack has left him mortally wounded. Enter Gillian Michel-a woman with a special ability to heal-and a woman who calls to Dimitri’s immortal soul. Knowing the attacks will continue until she is caught, Gillian runs only to find herself on the receiving end of another assault time and again.

The relationship between Dimitri and Gillian is one of immediate attraction but Gil wants nothing to do with the shifter wolves. She is drawn to Dimitri but her family history prevents her from getting too close to any wolf. She is a hunted woman, wanted for the power she secretly hides from the world, but a woman who wants to be loved for herself and not what her powers will do. The sex scenes are provocative, emotional and intense. Gillian is Dimitri’s reluctant mate and Dimitri’s wolf needs to claim the woman for his very own.

The world building continues with the inclusion of many of the previous storyline characters as well as the sights and sounds of the New Orleans nightlife and the Las Vegas desert strip. The secondary characters include Jac and Nick from the New York Pack as well as Logan and several of the members from Dimitri’s Acadian Pack. Leopold and several of his Nightkind vampires play a significant role in Dimitri and Gillian’s story but it is one of Dimitri’s ex-lovers, a conniving witch named Ilsbeth whose jealousy and desire for Dimitri will put everyone at risk.

Kym Grosso’s IMMORTALS OF NEW ORLEANS series is a fantasy of the mind; an imaginative series about the darker side of the supernatural race; and a romantic tale of soul mates destined for one another.

ABOUT THE BOOK: release October 14, 2014

Callie Davis stumbles upon two of her three male roommates in a surprising, molten-hot midnight tryst and discovers a side of herself she never knew existed. Desire to play with them grips her, and she can’t stop fantasizing about having multiple men, particularly her three long-time best friends.

Callie is thrilled when a guys’ night out gives her the perfect opportunity to recreate her fantasy, with the help of a threesome porn video and a bag of sex toys. That is, until Lucas, Jack and Noah return early and catch her in the act. More than anything, the guys want to make her fantasy come true. But Callie has a secret, and she can’t help wondering if being with all three men will risk the future she’s always wanted with one of them.

As three strong sets of hands caress and undress her, Callie surrenders to desire, because sometimes you just gotta say…yes.

••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: JUST GOTTA SAY is an erotic stand alone novella (short story) by author Laura Kaye that follows a few hours in the life of Callie Davis and the three men that she loves. This is a M/M/F/M storyline with graphic sexual imagery and language.

After finding two of her three male roommates having wild, passionate sex Callie fantasizes about a four way-a ménage with Lucas, Jack and Noah. Hoping to learn about the intimate positions and what to do, Callie rents a porn video and proceeds to teach herself the basics of sex with multiple partners at one time. What Callie never expected was to be caught in the act and for her roommates to offer up a fantasy night of passion. All three men are just as aroused as Callie but one wants something more than a one-night stand….he wants forever.

JUST GOTTA SAY is a fast paced, passionate and sexual storyline of erotica that focuses on four people who love one another and take advantage of their desires and needs. It is a story that is in the moment; there is very little background information, no detailed character analysis or childhood history revealed. It is what it is….a story of sex, passion and falling in love with your best friend.

excerpt

The set-up: Callie’s most secret fantasy was just
unexpectedly revealed to her three male roommates. NOTE:  For mature readers only  18 +

The invitation he laid out for her—the invitation to be
with them, to act out this fantasy for real with them—was completely
outside anything she imagined possible.

She sat for a long moment, still mostly curled into herself.
Her gaze lit on the rough bobbing of Jack’s Adams apple as he swallowed. His
apparent case of nerves eased hers. A little. Soft, sandy-colored strands
brushed against her forehead. Her nose filled with the scent of him, all night
air and masculinity.

Callie took a deep breath, her body remembering her
unfulfilled arousal even as her brain struggled to keep up. “What are you
saying, Jack?” she whispered, buying herself time to think and needing him to
spell it out.

One hand stroked her back while the other combed her hair
off the side of her face. “I’m saying”—he nibbled at her ear, but this time his
lips lingered, his warm exhalation caressing her skin—“that the three of us want
to bring that fantasy to life for you. If you want.”

Every nerve ending tingled with the promise of what he
offered. Her heart rose from where it had plummeted into her gut and now
hammered against her chest. Images of the three of them kissing her, fucking
her, swamped her brain. Blood roared through her ears. “Are you teasing me?”

“Look at me,” he said, sliding his large hand under her
 cheek.

The commanding press of his skin on hers skittered
electrical charges down her neck to her breasts. Her nipples hardened. She
acquiesced and sat up just enough to face one of her three dearest friends.

“We want to do this for you.” He quirked the sexiest of
crooked smiles and shrugged with one shoulder. “You know we’d be good
together.”

She didn’t know whether his “we” meant her and him or the
four of them. An encouraging voice in her mind said both interpretations were
 true.

He cupped her neck, his grasp comforting and reassuring, and
brushed his lips against her right cheekbone. Her right eye. Her forehead. Tilting
his head to the other side, he repeated the action against her left eye, the
apple of her left cheek. She gasped when his last kiss fell on that tender,
hollow spot just below her ear.

“What do you want, Callie? Whatever you want, we want.
Always.”

Vince never forgot Kit. Setting out to earn her forgiveness, they fall back into the rhythm of love and heat, much like the songs they wrote as teens. When L.A. calls, will Kit go, or stay and write her greatest love song?

••••••••••••••

REVIEW:

The Right Chord is a wonderful love story and the third in this Brothers of Audubon Springs series. The story is set back in Audubon Springs and this heartwarming and sometimes heart wrenching tale is the story of Vince Iuliano.

Backstory or setup: Vince Iuliano and Kit Maggio were a hot item back in their high school days. They loved each other as much as any teenager can love. However, Vince was a home and family kind of guy, his family owned a construction business and he pretty much wanted the small town life. Kit was a musical talent on the rise and looking to go to LA. Through some teen angst and misunderstandings he thought it would be better if her didn’t follow her or try to stop her from going, she thought she just wasn’t worth the trouble to him… like I said, angst and stuff!

The really great thing is that Rose Ann DeFranco can use this wonderful angst and its aftermath to weave a heart pounding rebirth of love between the right people. She does so with humor, style and magnificent timing!

I’m not into doing spoilers and ruining this incredibly passionate story. Let me just say their road back to each other and forgetting bad pasts for each of them is what makes this author the one you don’t want to put down. It’s the perfect story for this brother, just like the other two. However, the right thing doesn’t always happen first, as it probably should…shit happens!

Get a really big glass (or in my case a bottle) of your favorite beverage, a large supply of tissues, a few soft pillows to throw or throttle and dig in. Enjoy everyone, I certainly did!

Interview beige

TRC: Hi RoseAnn and welcome to The ReadingCafe. Congratulations on the August 2014 release of THE RIGHT CHORD – book three in your Brothers of Audubon Springs series.

We would like to start with some background information. Would you please tell us something about yourself?

Connect: Website | Facebook | Twitter | Goodreads

RoseAnn DeFranco picRose Ann: Thank you so much for having me here today! I am a wife and mother with a passion for the written word and super heroes. I work full time for a consulting firm. I’m a Dance Mom with a very active 11 year old, and I used to be a professional singer and actress.

TRC: Who or what influenced your career in writing?

Rose Ann: I come from a musical theatre background so the pursuit of an artistic or creative life has always been a part of my makeup. When I left the theatre life behind, I found a new creative outlet in writing. My father was the first person to tell me I had a voice in writing. He passed away before my first book was published.

TRC: When not writing, what do you do to relax?

Rose Ann: I love listening to music, singing, reading, bike riding, going to the beach, and just in general being with my family.

The Right ChordTRC: THE RIGHT CHORD is the third instalment in your Brothers of Audubon Springs romance series. Would you please tell us something about the premise?

Rose Ann: The three stories take place in a fictional Jersey Shore town. The focus is on three brothers in a big loving Italian family. The family, especially their dishcloth toting mother, meddles, and the women who come into their lives drive them crazy until they can’t help but fall in love. What surprised me a bit in my own writing is the humor. I’m not sure I intended to write funny heartwarming stories. I thought I was writing dramas at the start. But it makes sense, I’ve always subscribed to that, laugh so you don’t cry mentality. Sometimes we laugh until we cry.

TRC: How many books do you have planned for the series?

Rose Ann: I only intended to write one story in Audubon Springs, but I fell in love with the town. When I finished Return to Audubon Springs, I didn’t want to leave. The entire plot of Secondhand Romance came to me as soon as I wrote THE END of the first book. THE RIGHT CHORD is the final book in this series since I’m all out of brothers, but stay tuned. I’m not done with Audubon Springs just yet.

TRC: Can each book be read as a stand alone?

Absolutely! While you may see characters from the previous books, each book is its own story from start to finish. In fact Kit, the heroine in THE RIGHT CHORD, was not featured in the previous two books even though it is a reunion romance.

Brothers of Audubon Springs

TRC: What challenges or difficulties (research, logistics, background) did you encounter writing this particular story and series?

Rose Ann: The recurring theme of this series is home and family. It is all driven by emotions and family circumstances. This was not a research heavy project. I researched the region a bit and added more characters of Irish decent to the town as a result, but this is an area I know and the stories are very much a part of my own background. The hero Vince is a single dad with a six year old daughter. My husband was a single dad with a six year old son when I met him. Kit pretty much works as a profession in the theatre arts program where I attended college. So you see where I’m going with this, THE RIGHT CHORD is in some ways very close to me.

TRC: Have you considered a novella or spin off for any of the secondary characters?

Rose Ann: Funny you should ask! Many readers haves asked me about Mia, the cousin to Rafe, Tony and Vince. Her role is prominent in all three books in the series. I’m working on a holiday novella for her. Beyond that, I can see a new Audubon Springs series forming as a result of some characters I introduced in THE RIGHT CHORD, but right now I’m working on projects in other towns so I’m not sure when I’ll get to those stories. Mia deserves her day in the sun and a happy ending. I feel I owe it to her.

TRC: When writing a storyline, do the characters direct the writing or do you direct the characters?

Rose Ann: I am a very character driven writer. I spend a lot of time getting to know my characters before starting a story. I usually have a strong sense of where I’m going, meaning the big moments, or turning points in a story before I hit go. When a character starts to steer the ship in a direction I hadn’t intended, I let them go. Usually end up where I was headed in the first place, but they may have taken me down a different path.

TRC: The mark of a good writer is to pull the reader into the storyline so that they experience the emotions along with the characters. What do you believe a writer must do to make this happen? Where do you believe writer’s fail in this endeavor?

Rose Ann: I think if a writer has a comfortable voice, it is easy to invite a reader into your world. I’m a writer, but I consider myself a reader as well. I don’t like to read a story in which I feel the author is condensing, talking down to, or preaching to their readers. Also, characterization is so important to me. If I find too much in the way of inconsistent characterization in a book, I have to set it aside. I think if you’re true to your characters, you will invite the reader into your story.

TRC: Writer’s Block is a very real phenomenon. How do you handle the pressures and anxiety of writer’s block?

Rose Ann: I don’t know that I’ve ever experienced writers block while in the middle of a project. There are times when a scene isn’t working as well as I’d like. One of the best things I’ve found to do at that point is to write some notes for myself as to what should our could happen in that scene, and then move on to another scene that I want to write at the time. Any anxiety I’ve experienced is possibly when I’m in-between projects. There is that moment of concern that a new cast of characters won’t show up on my doorstep. Fortunately, they always do!

TRC: Many authors bounce ideas and information with other authors or friends and family. With whom do you bounce ideas?

Rose Ann: I’m really lucky to have a great group of writing friends and one amazing beta reader. Something I’ve learned over the years is that I’m very much an auditory writer, meaning I need to talk it out. My writing friends, critique partners and my husband are great for this. My husband is the best because sometimes he’ll ask questions that aren’t from a writer’s perspective that really prompt thought. These conversations usually end with me running out of the room to jot something down.

TRC: What three things would you like to accomplish in the next five years?

Rose Ann: I currently am pursuing writing in multiple genres. In the next five years I would like to have a new humorous contemporary romance series published, a young adult contemporary series publish and a young adult fantasy series published.

TRC: What is something that few, if any people, know about you?

Rose Ann: I am really sort of an open book. I kept my musical theatre background in the closet for a while until after a drink or two I hit the karaoke mic at a writing conference a few years back.

TRC: On what are you currently working?

Rose Ann: Right now I’m working on Mia’s Audubon Springs Novella, a new humorous contemporary romance series, and a young adult contemporary. Lots of irons in the fire.

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Rose Ann: Thank you for the opportunity to appear on your blog. I’m a fan of the site and just love what you do here.

Hard to Forget by Incy Black – a Review

Hard to Forget by Incy Black – a Review

Hard to ForgetAmazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / BAM

Description:
A warning ignored…a love denied

Four years ago, Commander Jack Ballantyne followed Special Agent Lowry Fisk into a death trap. Fortunately, both of them lived to tell the tale, but when he had Lowry drummed out of the British Intelligence Service for her own safety—and his own peace of mind—he knew she’d never forgive him.

Lowry Fisk knew, she just knew, that the Assassins, the secret black-ops unit of the Service she and Jack belonged to, had a mole. And as the Assassins Commander, Jack should have believed her, even though she had little evidence beyond a gut feeling. But when he hadn’t, she’d taken it upon herself to find the traitor—and ended up assaulted, shot, and left for dead. Jack had come to her rescue, but it had been too little, too late. Now all she wants to do is forget the attack, the Service, and the sexy, steely-eyed Commander with the power to make her feel weak.

But the mole is on the move, and he’s coming for Lowry to finish what he started. Jack has to get the stubborn, dangerously gorgeous woman to let him back into her life and allow him the Assassins to protect her—without allowing her to worm her way into his heart.

Review:

Hard to Forget by Incy Black is the 2nd book in her Hard To series.

Lowry ‘bloody’ Fisk (Jack’s nickname for the female in this book) wants to be a special agent in the British intelligence service, the best of the best is Jack’s assassin Team, so she works hard, and gets a place on the team. End of story, so you would think, but that is just the start of the story. There is instant attraction, but as neither can act on it, the attraction is buried under animosity.

Lowry begins to suspect there are traitors in the service in which she serves in, so begins a campaign of investigation, and instead of keeping it quiet until she had more evidence, she voices her opinions often and probably the wrong people.

Lowry is a pain in Jack’s butt, her conspiracy theories are unfounded, but she sure is cute, and she brings out the alpha in him, he wants Lowry, but not enough being her superior. It’s not supposed to happen.

Everything comes to a nasty ending for Lowry, she ends up on the wrong end of a kidnapping and sex slavery ring. She is brutally attacked (thank goodness we only get the bare facts) and to add insult to injury, Jack (in his defense he believes he is looking after her) Shoots her !!! She is dishonorably discharged. Lowry disappears to lick her wounds (everyone is unaware of her rape, hell will freeze over before she tells anyone)

4 years later …..

Lowry is now an artist and is doing her first exhibition. But the memory of the attack and the fact no one believed her about the leaks in the service has left her wary and still very afraid. When she bumps into both Jack and her attacker, Lowry’s flight instincts kick in, and she prepares to disappear.

Jack is there to silence Lowry one way or another. He thought he had seen the last of this woman. After shooting her, then drumming her out of his unit, he thought his life would return to normal, but he never forget her. Jack carries a lot of emotional baggage, and we see his struggle through the book.

Jack and Lowry team up to clear her name, and once he gets the whole picture, Jack swears the attacker will rue the day he crossed HIS woman.

The book is full of emotion and angst, and I LOVED it. The tears from Lowry had me joining in, and I felt all the emotion from both Jack and Lowry ‘bloody’ Fisk. The book is fast paced and full of some great twists.

If you like a James Bond type, then Jack is the man for you. And here’s hoping Jack’s brothers all get their stories

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date October 8, 2014

Queen Shifter, Lily Ruckler, has found solace in brutal warfare. Her bloodied fists and bared fangs fill the holes left in her memory, the blank spaces that leave her soul aching and empty. Her only pleasure is in blood; her only salvation is the relationship she has with her infant child, the baby of unknown origins who brings her solace and stability.

When Elder Harcourt summons Lily and her protector Antonio back to the United States, Lily thinks nothing unusual about the change of location. But a standard reconnaissance mission leaves her trapped inside King Zeller’s private quarters, and at his mercy. Surprise attraction rapidly turns to a battle of wills and an intense power struggle that leaves no clear victor but plenty of resentment.

They are not allowed to nurse their wounds. In order to win the war against the Commoners, the King Vampire and Queen Shifter must work together. It should be easy. The war is turning, the battle is deadly, and both Lily and Ezra love the cold cleanliness of combat. But their chance meeting has led to more than an unlikely alliance. Secrets have a way of surfacing, especially on a torn-up battlefield, and Lily and Ezra are about to re-learn all they cannot remember. If they can’t control their emotions and responses, it will be to their own ruin and the destruction of everything around them.

REVIEW: KING TOMB is the third instalment in Scarlett Dawn’s new adult, paranormal ‘first’ Forever Evermore Trilogy. Told from first person POV (Lily) King Tomb is the conclusion to Lily and Ezra’s story-one that began as adult students in King Hall-where Lily (wolf shifter) and Ezra (vampire) were trained to one day take over as King of the Vampires and Queen of the Shifters. KING TOMB sees Lily and Ezra fighting a war against the Coms (commoner/humans) all the while fighting the knowledge that their minds have been wiped and there are black holes where memories were once stored. The storyline advances the series twelve to eighteen months.

The focus of KING TOMB finds Lily embroiled in her own personal war –a new mother who has no recollection about the past-a past that directly affects her daughter and her own mind. Returning to the United States, she will be placed in direct contact with the man who once called to her heart but missing pieces of information and lost memories feed the hatred and ambivalence she now feels towards the vampire she used to love. While Lily and Ezra work to stop a war with the humans, the Elders work towards a peaceful reconciliation between their King and Queen. But magic is at work and the Elders are having a difficult time extrapolating the truth.

There is an immediate attraction between Ezra and Lily-one that does not go unnoticed by the Elders and one that is born out of a previous love. But when the mind is wiped clean of the past, no one is sure where they stand and whose side they are on. The one constant and important tie is a small three month old child whose DNA cannot deny her heritage or her parents.

The secondary characters drive a good portion of the storyline and there are new revelations and declarations of love from an unlikely source but a love that has lingered for years. We get an up close and personal look at Lily Ruckler and Ezra Zeller’s fathers-a trio of men whose own lives are becoming more complicated.

As for secondary characters, throughout the first two instalments King Jack (Mage) and Queen Pearl (Elemental) were a fixture in the storylines-best friends with Lily and Ezra-but two characters whose existence or presence in King Tomb was almost negligible until the end. They appear to have been forgotten or pushed aside.

KING TOMB is the final instalment in this trilogy. The storyline ends with a hint of more to come but one that does not necessarily focus on Lily and Zeller. There is a quick resolution to this story-a rush to the finish-one that left me questioning what happened and why. As Lily and Ezra travelled back in time-there is no real explanation as to how and why. This particular part of the storyline came out of nowhere, seemingly unquestioned by most of the people involved and one that left me with mixed feelings about the ending. There is a HEA but not necessarily one for this reader.
