Description:
On the planet Celta, accepting a HeartMate can be the greatest challenge in the universe…

Antenn, an architect hired to build a cathedral in Druida City, dares not think of his HeartMate. Even though he yearns for her, he’s taken steps to ensure she will be forever unknown to him. After all, how could he, a commoner who grew up in the slums, the brother of a murderer, be worthy of any woman?

Tiana, a priestess, has her own fears about being a HeartMate. She’s watched her friends struggle with such a stormy destiny. She’s sure her HeartMate has never claimed her due to a terrible scandal involving her Family, and she’s set aside hopes for love.

Antenn’s gotten the commission of his life. The cathedral will make him famous, but more, it will last for ages and prove to others he can contribute to Celta…if the controversial structure isn’t destroyed while being built. Tiana, too, is an integral part of this process, but the villain who wrecked her Family is ready with firebombs. Can they trust each other in dangerous circumstances to succeed…and to love?

Review:
Heart Fire by Robin D. Owens is the 13th book in her wonderful Celta series. I have been waiting a long time for Tiana’s story and was thrilled to find out Heart Fire was hers. Antenn is our hero, and Tiana’s Heartmate; however, it will take awhile before they both realize they are mates.

They each have a past that has left marks on them both which were caused by terrible tragedies that marred them. We have known that Tiana’s family was wrongly accused years ago, and lost their titles and home. Tiana is a priestess, and resents that her families past has held her back. She believes she is good enough to become the high priestess. Tiana has also searched from time to time the feel of her Heartmate to no avail. Of course, she blamed the inability to sense her heartmate on her family’s history, that he will never acknowledge her. Tiana is assigned to handle all the religious aspects worthy of a priestess on the new Cathedral. She meets and works closely with Antenn, as they both must face the difficulties involved with those against this project.

Antenn life’s was also wrecked when he was very young, by his brother being a murderer. Antenn was lucky that one of the High families adopted him. Now Antenn, who is an architect, has won a huge contract to build a Cathedral, which he hopes will earn him the respect he feels is now due to him. When he was growing up, he and his family did a spell to block him from sensing or finding his heartmate; because he was not ready at that time for any kind of emotion. Both Antenn and Tiana feel some attraction to each other, but neither suspects they are heartmates.

Without giving spoilers, what follows is wonderfully written romance that builds slowly. The villain behind Tiana’s family ruin is in the background of this story, and very nicely handled. Friends and family come together to help resolve a wrong. The romance and suspense throughout this storyline, held in the wonderful land of Celta, made for an enjoyable heartwarming and fun relaxing read. But what I have always loved about this series, are the Fams (animal familiars who telepathically talk to their fam). In Heart Fortune we got to meet some of the others we have met before, and Anteen’s cat fam, Pinky, whom he had since he was a young boy. But we meet Tiana’s cat fam at the start. Shock of all shocks, he is a stray dirty cat, who is called RATKILLER, and is feared by other cats. But from the start, as he speaks to her very loudly, you know Ratkiller is the perfect fam for Tiana…tough, protective, loyal, independent and cocky. Of course he gets a new name to add on, but we will never forget Ratkiller. I also loved TQ (the residence).

Once again Robin D. Owens takes us on journey through Celta, giving us another wonderful couple, terrific storyline, and the fun fams, as well as the residence. Very well done.

Review:

Her Lone Wolf by Paige Tyler is the 2nd book in her X-Ops series, which is romance suspense at its best. Paige Tyler writes an exciting suspense filled story, with a wonderful romance between a fabulous couple. Danica Beckett works for the FBI, and is one of their best agents. Two years before she had worked for DCO (Department of Covert Ops), but was blackmailed to leave.

Clayne Buchanan is our hero, and he was Danica lover two years before. She left without any real reason, and he has been heart broken and bitter. Clayne is a wolf shifter, and we learn early on, when he was recruited to join DCO, that he is volatile and needed to learn to control his temperament.

The story picks up with a serial killer on the loose, and Danica knows from her time with DCO, that the killer is a shifter. The FBI does not know the supernatural beings like shifters, and has no idea that DCO exists. Danica calls her old boss to tell him about the situation with already a few deaths. Unfortunately for Danica, the person sent to help under the guise of Homeland Security is Clayne. He is very cold to her, not happy to be on this assignment.

All this is early on, and I do not want to give spoilers. What follows is a tense and exciting adventure with the search for a killer that taunts them to play a game…..”catch me if you can, while I hunt my victims.”   The FBI ia having a hard time, but it is Clayne who uses his shifter abilities to come closer to the killer. However, the stakes are raised, as the killer knows Clayne too is a shifter.

While this adventure is ongoing, with continued violent deaths, we get to see Clayne and Danice become closer. In time she will tell him the truth, and everything changes. Their romance becomes sizzling, and the danger escalates to those close to the case, as the killer becomes vindictive. There is also a side story of our heroes from the first book in this series. It was great to see Landon and Ivy play a part in this story.

Paige Tyler has done a wonderful job giving us a fast pace & pulse-pounding non-stop action, a terrible villain, tense moments, great characters, and a fantastic romance. The gripping storyline comes to a satisfying conclusion, but many things still remain to be resolved within DCO. This is what romance suspense is all about, and you need to start reading this series.

Interview-RED

Paige, welcome to The Reading Café. We would like to thank you for taking the time to answer our questions.

Paige: Thanks so much for having me!

TRC: Please tell us about yourself:

Paige_Tyler_Paige:  I was born and raised in New Jersey, then moved all over after marrying my hubby (South Korea, Louisiana, Atlanta, Washington State), and currently call the beautiful Florida coast home. I’m a USA Today Bestselling Author of sexy, romantic fiction and I’ve written over fifty books in practically every genre of romance, but I have to admit that my favorite is definitely the paranormal/romantic-suspense combo. Hubby, my very own military hero, and I live with our adorable fur baby (also known as our dog) and spend a good portion of our time writing. While I graduated with a degree in education and was well on my way to being an elementary school teacher, I decided to pursue my passion and become an author instead. These days I’m fully committed to writing books about hunky alpha males and the kickbutt heroines who fall in love with them.

TRC:  When and how did you first become interested in writing?

Paige:  It seems like I’ve been writing since I was a little kid. I remember writing stories about all the kitties we had when I was nine or ten. They were cute little stories about them having adventures and playing with each other. No romance, though. I thought cats were girls back then, and dogs were boys, and everyone knows that dogs and cats don’t get along! 🙂

As I got older, I entered writing contests and took a lot of creative writing courses. I had some great teachers that really encouraged me to keep going—big shout out to Sharon Griffin, my creative writing teacher in high school. I feel so completely fortunate to have had those inspirational people around me at the right time. I certainly wouldn’t be where I am now without them.

TRC:  What challenges have you faced getting your novels published?

Paige:  I remembered when I first started writing back in the 1980’s…on a typewriter. I wrote stories, then spent hours in the local libraries getting the addresses for literacy agencies in New York. There were a lot who wanted you to attach a check with the manuscripts. As you can imagine I never heard back from any of them. I realize now that they were scam artists, but back then, I was crushed.

Once I got going with my digital career, and had a few books under my belt, I attended pitch appointments at various conferences trying to get in with New York. Those pitches scared me silly, and while a lot of them helped move my career forward, I still remember vividly the ones that ended within the first fifteen seconds, usually with the agent or editor saying, “I don’t like that idea. Do you have anything else?” That was hard to deal with, but I realize now it’s just part of the process.

Even with my current X-OPS series, which is doing great, it wasn’t exactly a walk in the park. I went through 174 agents before I found the one who believed in me and my story. But again, you realize after the fact that it was simply part of the process and it makes you really appreciate finding that perfect agent who really gets you. And I heart mine!

Her Perfect Mate

TRC:  Your X-Ops series began with Her Perfect Mate, which we reviewed earlier this year. For those of our members who may not be familiar with your series, can you please tell us the premise of the series, and how you came up with the idea?

Paige:  I’d love to!

HER PERFECT MATE revolves around the Department of Covert Operations (DCO), a top secret organization within the Department of Homeland Security. They pair the very best soldiers, law enforcement people, and spies together with shifters—humans who have special animal attributes in their DNA. Think of it like pairing one of them with one of us. They take on impossible missions few people in the world will ever know about.

The heroine is a sexy but deadly feline shifter named Ivy Halliwell who gets teamed up with yet another soldier—and she definitely isn’t thrilled about it. Both her previous partners hated her because she was a freak in their eyes, and she figures this new guy won’t be any different. But Captain Landon Donovan is Special Forces, so he’s used to taking crazy situations in stride. Not only are they amazing on the job, but they’re amazing in bed, too. There’s only one problem—getting romantically involved with your partner is against DCO policy. So, not only do they have to hide that they’re lovers, they also have to deal with people trying to kill them every few chapters.

HER PERFECT MATE is a paranormal shifter story that combines romance, action, suspense, and military elements into one exciting package that will keep you up reading late into the night—I promise.

My hubby and I came up with the idea at the Lori Foster Get Together in 2011. We were having dinner at PF Chang’s with our friend and one of my favorite writers, Monette Michaels, and her friend, Linnea Sinclair, talking about writing, especially how to make the jump from ebook/indie publishing to New York. Linnea said some really insightful things about finding a niche and a voice that is undeniably mine, then she pointed at hubby and suggested I should be using his military experiences to lend an edge to my books that other writers might not have.

Hubby’s always been reticent to take any of our books in the military direction…that’s an aspect of his life that he’s always considered personal and private. But after this long talk with Moni and Linnea, we both started thinking that maybe this was the way to go.

Around this same time, there was a lot of Special Operation stuff going on in the news, and an idea started developing. Wouldn’t it be cool to blend military elements with paranormal, specifically shifter, elements?

By the time we left Lori’s a few days later, I already had an outline going for the X-OPS Series. Hubby really got behind it, and our biggest problem became keeping the stories down to a manageable size. The first draft of HER PERFECT MATE was over 140,000 words!

Her Lone Wolf Nov 14TRC:  Her Lone Wolf is the second book in your X-Ops series, which was released yesterday. Can you please give a brief description of this story?

Paige:  Better yet…here’s the blurb! 🙂

Leaving him was Impossible…

It took everything she had for FBI Special Agent Danica Beckett to walk away from the man she loved. But if she wants to save his life, she has to keep her distance. Now, with a killer on the loose and the stakes higher than ever before, the Department of Covert Ops is forcing these former lovers into an uneasy alliance…whether they like it or not.

Seeing her again is even worse…

The last thing Clayne Buchanan wants is to be shackled to the woman who broke his heart. She gets under his skin in a way no one ever has and makes him want things he has no right to anymore. All he has to do is suffer through this case and he can be free of her for good. But when Clayne finds out why Danica left in the first place, everything he’s tried to bury comes roaring back-and there’s no way this wolf shifter is going to let her get away this time.

TRC:  How many books are planned for the X-Ops series?

Paige:  For everyone out there who absolutely loved HER PERFECT MATE, Book 1 in the X-OPS series, I have good news. The overarching storyline for the series has so much intrigue, distrust, and backstabbing going on, not to mention the myriad subplots and cast of secondary characters, that it has endless possibilities.

While each book has a main hero and heroine with their own standalone adventure and romance, I weave in a fun collection of secondary characters and plot arcs in to every story. Essentially, the characters continue to move the basic overarching storyline along in each book, much of it revolving around the fear that the people they work for at the DCO may be as evil and dangerous as the people they’re being sent after, all while enjoying their own romance and suspense-filled adventures.

Right now, I have the first ten books outlined, with basic conceptual material for at least another dozen or so. I think the readers are going to love having the X-OPS stories around for a long time to come!

Vampire 101TRC:  Modern Day Vampires is another series of yours. Can you give us a brief description of this series?

Paige:  This is fun vampire series I started quite a few years ago. While I love me some dark and brooding Angel from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, I didn’t want to go that route because it had already been done.

In Modern Day Vampires, my vampires aren’t demons. They’re vampirism is caused by a blood disorder which prevents their own blood from carrying oxygen properly. The vampire side effects (strength, speed, teeth, etc.) are all evolutionary changes that have come about over the centuries as their bodies came up with ways to help them be able to hunt for what they need to live—blood.

In the “old days” vamps would feed straight from the vein. Hence all the vampires getting a really bad reputation. But in this “modern” day and age, things have become quite a bit more civilized. There are blood banks and blood deliveries, and rule books on how to behave and conform. There’s a lot of humor as the vampires try to blend in. Think bureaucracies and paperwork, suntan lotion, and dedicated vampire 911 lines.

In the first book in the series, VAMPIE 101, the heroine, who grew up watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer has a hard time adjusting when she’s bitten by a rogue I’m-not-going-to-follow-your-rules vampire and left for dead. After rescuing her, the hero has to teach her everything she needs to know, while protecting her from the rogues who have decided they want things to go back to the good old days.

Here’s the blurb!

Being a Vampire Isn’t What It Used to Be.

Savanna Royce is a weekend Goth-girl who’s always been fascinated with vampires. She doesn’t really believe in them, of course, but that changes when she’s bitten by a rogue vamp and left for dead. Fortunately, two-hundred-and-seventy-eight-year-old vampire Kaige Travers is there to rescue her. Unwilling to let her die, he turns Savanna into a vampire to save her life—not knowing if she’ll thank him or hate him for it.

While Kaige is teaching Savanna what she needs to know about being a vampire, neither of them can deny the chemistry that’s there. Somewhere between getting her registered at the local vampire admin office and teaching her how to order blood on the internet, they fall for each other—fast and hard.

Just as things are heating up between the sheets—and everywhere else—they encounter one minor problem. The rogue vampire who attacked her is back and this time he wants to finish the job he started.

I’ve been working on Book 2 in the series for a long time, and I swear I’ll get it done—as soon as I figure out how to clone myself. 🙂

Animal AttractionTRC:  What can you tell us about your Alaskan Werewolf series?

Paige:  I also started this series years ago, though I’m happy to say that I just re-release Book 1 in the series—ANIMAL ATTRACTION—in the summer. I wrote this series for a particular publisher who had a wonderful “Men of Alaska” series going. I figured what better place to put werewolves than the great outdoors of Alaska. After getting the rights back from that publisher, I revised the story, adding more characters, storylines, and adventure.

I’m also working on a re-issue of the second book in the series—ANIMAL INSTINCT—and hope to have this book out by next summer (2015). If I get that cloning thing down. I’m also looking for a group of minions to hire (they must work for bananas), so I can find more time in the day for writing.

Here’s the blurb for ANIMAL ATTRACTION!

Not only are werewolves real, but they’re damn hunky, too.

Frustrated when none of the real newspapers will hire her as a reporter, Eliza Bradley takes the only job she can get–at a paranormal magazine. Her first assignment takes her to Fairbanks, Alaska to investigate the rumors that a werewolf has killed two local men.

When she meets Hunter McCall, a local college professor and an expert on wolves, she finds herself irresistibly drawn to him and ends up spending more time in his bed than worrying about werewolves. That’s when Eliza finds out Hunter isn’t just an animal in the sack, he’s an animal out of it, too–of the werewolf variety. Talk about a complicated relationship.

But Eliza can’t dwell on Hunter’s little shapeshifting issues for long. There’s another werewolf out there with a taste for human blood, and she and Hunter are the only ones who can stop him. If they don’t, they’re likely to become his next victims.

TRC:  You like to write a few genres, such as Paranormal, Romance, and Contemporary. What genre do you find is more challenging to write and do you have a favorite genre?

Paige: That’s a killer question! I love working in all subgenres of romance, be they paranormal, suspense, erotic, sci-fi, western, but right now, with my X-OPS and SWAT series going so well, my new favorite is romantic suspense genre. Of course, as anyone who has read HER PERFECT MATE (X-OPS 1) will tell you, even my romance suspense has a good dash of paranormal in there, as well as some serious heat. 🙂

As far as the most challenging genre to write, I think contemporary is the hardest. In general, if you’re talking pure contemporary, you aren’t going to have zombies jumping out of closets, the hero & heroine won’t be running for their lives from some deranged killer, they’ll be no threats to the city/country/world/current time-space continuum, etc. The writer has to move the romance and story along using those conflicts that keep everyday people from coming together—doubts, insecurities, social and economic differences, etc. I tend to love action, drama, and suspense (and monsters!), so it can be a bit challenging writing romances without those elements.

TRC:  What are you working on now?

Paige:  Right now, I’m just about going crazy with all the stuff I have going on (I really do need those minions)!

As you can see from this blog, I’m doing lot of promo for HER LONE WOLF (X-OPS 2), but I’m also getting ready to do the promo for a special free novella in the X-OPS Series called HER SECRET AGENT. It gives the readers a peak behind the scenes of the very beginnings of the DCO. You get to see a younger John Loughlin, the Director of the DCO, getting to know a certain “foxy” shifter extremely well. It will be available on the 2nd of December from Sourcebooks, but you can pre-order it now.

I’m also putting the finishing touches on Book 2 of my Special Wolf Alpha Team Series (SWAT…as in a pack of werewolves working on the Dallas SWAT team. Cool, right?). At the same time, I’m working on the first draft for Book 3 in that series, due to the publisher sometime in January. Plus, I’m starting to rough in the details on Book 4 of X-OPS. Or is it Book 4 of SWAT? I get a little confused sometimes.:)

Oh, yeah! BTW, I’m also putting out a military ménage boxed set for Veteran’s Day, with a tribute to each of the uniformed services. It’s your basic old fashioned girl meets two guys and decides that anything two can do…three can do better!

TRC:  What do you enjoy doing when you’re not writing? Do you have any hobbies?

Paige:  Did you see my schedule in the previous question? LOL! When I’m not writing…I’m either in the shower, or I’m sleeping. Even then, I’m still working out plot points.

But seriously, when I can drag myself away from my laptop, I’m usually out exercising with hubby (We love to jog and do P90X yoga. Have to do something to unkink from all that time behind the computer!). Or we’re out taking our fur baby for walks. We try to get in a movie now and then, and we have a few TV shows that I will always find time for—Teen Wolf, Supernatural, and The Walking Dead.

TRC:  Can you please tell us your writing process? Do you have a favorite spot or specific time to write?

Paige:  My hubby is a key part of my writing process. We typically go to PF Chang’s to brainstorm a story outline over spicy chicken. When we get home, he’ll start the outline/rough draft while I’m working the second and third drafts of a previous story. I check what he’s doing every night. Have to keep him on point or he’ll add random zombies into the story just to see if I’m paying attention. By the time I’m emailing a polished draft to my editor, he’s tossing me the next rough draft. Sure, he’s not much for romantic dialogue (he’ll just throw in a line such as “The hero should probably say something romantic here.”) and his intimate scenes are usually synopsized down to a single line (“Insert mad monkey sex here.”), but the plot work he does really saves me a ton of time and helps me meet deadlines.

You already know that I write all the time, but as far as where I write, mostly it’s on the couch. I just curl up with the laptop and go to town.

LIGHTNING ROUND:

FAVORITE FOOD: PF Chang’s Spicy Chicken and Brown Rice.

FAVORITE DESSERT: Chocolate anything

MILK OR DARK CHOCOLATE: Dark

FAVORITE FICTIONAL CHARACTER (not your own): Sam and Dean Winchester…I get to have both…they’re brothers!

LAST MOVIE YOU SAW: The Maze Runner

DOG OR CAT: Dog

TRC:  Thank you, Paige for answering our questions. The Reading Café wishes you the best of luck with Her Lone Wolf. Keep us informed about your upcoming releases. We look forward to working with you again.

Sandy’s Review

REVIEW: EDGE OF BETRAYAL is the fourth book in Shannon K Butcher’s contemporary, adult EDGE slightly paranormal, romantic suspense series.

BACKGROUND: The EDGE is a group of elite, military trained personnel who have all been ‘conditioned’ and ‘trained’ as killing machines, and are somehow linked to a 20 year old experimental operation known as The Threshold Project. The Threshold Project was a failure that left many children, who are now adults, on the brink of psychological collapse and physical destruction. The Edge is a private security company backed by Payton Bainbridge (a former member of The Threshold Project), and owner Bella Bayne who search for the victims of Dr. Stingyer and Dr. Sage. With the inclusion of female victims of The Threshold Project the Edge series is eerily similar to the premise behind Christine Feehan’s Ghostwalker series.

Told from third person point of view, the focus of EDGE OF BETRAYAL is former Threshold Project member and new EDGE agent Adam Brink and Mira Sage-the daughter of Dr. Richard Sage-the man who controls the Threshold experiments. The premise follows Mira as she is partnered with Adam, a man she believes has betrayed her fellow EDGE members and the victims of the Threshold project, and the man she once thought could be ‘the one.’ Following orders from the very people who ‘created’ him, Adam (in the hopes of finding the identity of his missing brother) returned an unwilling and frightened Mira to her father. Fast forward and Mira has not forgiven Adam for his betrayal. Dr. Richard Sage used, abused and experimented with Mira, and Adam’s connection to her father has fueled Mira’s need for revenge and escape.

The relationship between Mira and Adam is complicated. One-time lovers, Adam’s betrayal has destroyed Mira’s confidence in herself. Partnered together with Adam will force Mira to take a hard look at the man who is currently on everyone’s radar knowing that at any moment his training and the psychological control of The Threshold Project could leave another trail of destruction and pain. Mira is a woman unsure of her future; her emotional state has been affected by the experiments and abuse by her father; and her current status is literally unknown.

The secondary characters include some of the previous storyline agents, as well as agents Riley, Sophie and Gage. Sophie and Riley’s relationship is a secondary storyline of romance and love. The world building continues such that the co-administrators of The Edge, Payton Bainbridge and Bella Bayne maintain their search for more victims of The Threshold Project but with each discovery, something new and more discouraging destroys their hope of retrieval and recovery.

EDGE OF BETRAYAL (and the EDGE SERIES) is a fast paced, imaginative and compelling storyline about power and control; where building the ultimate soldier results in destroyed lives and destroyed minds; broken hearts and broken promises. Shannon K Butcher will capture your imagination as she weaves a fascinating tale of intense pain and idealistic goals.

Barb’s Review:

Edge of Betrayal by Shannon K. Butcher is the 4th book in her Edge series. In this book, Mira is our heroine. Mira is Clay’s (previous book hero) best friend, and her father is the evil scientist, Dr. Sage, who was killed in the last book.

Adam is our hero, but until the very end, he was thought to be an enemy, who used Mira to help Dr. Sage. But what Mira didn’t know was that Adam was doing what he did to find his long lost brother. Bella, who owns the Edge agency, hires Adam to help them continue to work at finding all the victims of Dr. Sage. Mira hates Adam, and she doesn’t believe he is now good. But she is forced to team up with Adam, as Bella has assigned them to find a victim.   They all still have to worry about Dr. Stynger, who was Sage’s protégé, and she is just as bad as he was.

The experiments done by Sage and Stynger were brainwashing done on many children, and they need to find these children now grown up, to save them from unknown danger.  What follows is a very exciting action packed storyline with Mira’s life in danger, as there are some unexpected surprises in store. I cannot tell you more without giving spoilers.

The romance between Adam and Mira is slow to build, as Mira is afraid to trust him. Adam cares very much for Mira, but he understands that he hurt her before. It was very nicely done, though I thought that Mira was too quick to misjudge Adam, especially once she realized she loved him.

Shannon Butcher continues to give us a wonderful exciting, on the edge story that flows so well into the next book. Once again, I could not put the book down until I reached the end. Mira and Adam were a great couple, with all their flaws. There was a secondary romance with Riley and Sophie.  Edge of Betrayal is another wonderful edition to this series. I look forward to the next book, which belongs to Gage.

REVIEW: INTO DARKNESS is the sixth and final installment in JT Geissinger’s adult, dystopian Night Prowler paranormal, romance series focusing on a shape shifting panther species known as the Ikati. Each full-blooded Ikati is blessed (or cursed) with a special ability. Some are telepathic, able to shift into mist; shift into other animals and others can walk through walls. Anyone betraying their secrets are punished by death but the Ikati have been targeted for annihilation by the humans. This is hunter and Ikati Alpha Magnus and Lumina Bohn’s storyline.

The focus of the storyline fast forwards the series approximately twenty five years into the future. Following the ‘Flash’ which most humans believed all but destroyed the world, the Ikati numbers have been decimated through discrimination, abuse, torture and death. With the Ikati queen having been held in prison for almost a quarter of a century, and her mate missing and presumed dead, Magnus is a man determined to discover the whereabouts of the remaining members of his species. Enter Lumina Bohn, a young woman adopted by human parents who kept secret Lumina’s true identity. Lumina is one of the most powerful Ikati in existence but revealing Lumina’s true heritage has placed a larger target on the Ikati species.

INTO DARKNESS is a richly detailed storyline woven through an apocalyptic nightmare. The ‘Flash’ and its’ after affects has created a world dominated by man and one man in particular believes himself to be of ‘god-like’ power. As the Ikati struggle to survive in a world that views anything different as an abomination, Lumina must come to accept that she will be the savior of her kind.

The relationship between Lumina and Magnus is one that began in the mind-walking into one another’ dreams, our couple have known one another for years but it is only with the recent revelations and her discovery that our couple will physically meet –in the flesh. Magnus is a man whose heart and body have been destroyed by the humans who left a beaten and tortured young man scarred for life.

JT Geissinger’s NIGHT PROWLER series a passionate and startling look at a species destroyed by misunderstanding, misconception, specieism and discrimination-similar in premise to Hitler and Nazi Germany, we find the Ikati stripped of their autonomy, their individually and their freedom. To live is to exist; to exist is to hide who and what they are; to hide is a failure to live. The cycle is vicious; the abuse and experimentation are rampant and in the end, the humans will be more like the Ikati than they had ever thought possible.

INTO DARKNESS is a wondrous, exciting and revealing conclusion to JT Geissinger’s passionate Night Prowler series. There are heartbreaking moments, startling realizations and an intense need for revenge for a species who have all but been destroyed by the fear of the unknown and the differences brought about by DNA. JT Geissinger is an amazing story teller whose world of the Ikati is compelling, captivating and startling familiar.

About The Author Black and Red

JT Geissinger PIcJ.T. Geissinger’s debut novel, Shadow’s Edge, was published in 2012 and was a #1 Amazon US and UK bestseller in fantasy romance and romance series. She has been nominated for the prestigious RITA® award from the Romance Writers of America for best paranormal romance for her second book in the Night Prowler series, Edge of Oblivion.

A life-long lover of reading and a self-professed “book addict,” she didn’t realize her dream of writing a novel until a milestone birthday forced her to take stock of her goals in life. Always believing the right time to commit to putting pen to paper would magically announce itself, it took waking up one cold January morning with a shiny new zero as the second number in her age to kick start her determination.

Starting on that very day, she wrote what would become Shadow’s Edge in a little over four months and submitted it to several literary agents. Nothing happened. Thinking that was the end of that but by no means willing to give up on her dreams of being published, she began work on a second manuscript.

Then, during a trip to Italy in honor of their 10th wedding anniversary and the honeymoon she and her husband never took, she received an email that would change her life. It was from an agent, Marlene Stringer of Stringer Literary, and it contained the three words every aspiring author longs to hear: “I loved it.”

Marlene sold the manuscript to Montlake Romance who published it six months later. Hitting the #1 Amazon bestseller lists within weeks of publication, Shadow’s Edge was book one of the Night Prowler novels. Book two, Edge of Oblivion, was published in October 2012 and will be followed by Rapture’s Edge in June 2013, and Edge of Darkness in fall 2013. There are six books total planned for the series.

What To Do With a Bad Boy by Marie Harte-Review and Excerpt

WHAT TO DO WITH A BAD BOY (The McCauley Brothers 4) by Marie Harte-Review and Excerpt

What To Do with a Bad Boy

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Amazon.uk/ Barnes and Noble / BAM / iTunes

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date November 4, 2014

Mike McCauley had his soul mate for a precious time before she died giving birth to their son. She left him with the best boy a guy could want, so why is everyone playing matchmaker? He’s sick of it . . . until he meets Delilah Webster.

For some reason, the foul-mouthed, tattooed mechanic sets his motor running. He sees the loving woman buried within. But the closer they get, the more the pain of past wounds throws a monkey wrench into a future he’s not sure he can handle.

•••••••••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: WHAT TO DO WITH A BAD BOY is the fourth installment in Marie Harte’s adult, contemporary McCauley Brothers erotic romance series focusing on the McCauley family. This is eldest brother and widower Mike McCauley, and tattooed and pierced mechanic Delilah (Del) Webster’s storyline, one that has been building for a couple of books. Told from two distinct close third person points of view including Mike’s son Colin, the storyline picks up immediately following the events of books three. WHAT TO DO WITH A BAD BOY can be read as a stand alone but I recommend reading in order for your enjoyment.

The premise follows the building relationship between Del and Mike. Del first appeared on the scene (in a previous book) when she fixed a flat tire for Mike’s future sister in law. Mike’s six year old son Colin fell instantly in love with the less than feminine female mechanic and sets a path into motion hoping his father will fall in love and give him a new mom.

The relationship between Mike and Del is fraught with reluctance, aggression and animal attraction. Mike is a man who likes things a little rough with sex and Del is the woman who is willing to give him everything he wants. Since the death of his first wife Lea, giving birth to their son, Mike swears he will never remarry but friends with benefits is definitely on the agenda. Lea was his soul mate and there is only ONE soul mate for every man. Del’s unhappy childhood has hardened her heart-believing love is impossible-and Mike is a man who could easily destroy her heart. With that in mind, Del and Mike agree to keep things simple but the heart will begin to fall before the mind has had a chance to catch up. There are moments of heartbreak and sorrow as well as humor and fun. The sex scenes are energetic, erotic and intense.

The world building continues to focus on the McCauley family and friends, the family owned business and Abby’s romance novel publications. The secondary characters include all of the previous storyline couples including Mike’s parents and Del’s father and brother who give the storyline and series cohesion and a familiarity. Mike’s mother Beth is less than welcoming of Mike’s friendship with Del and in this there are some tense and interesting moments as Beth continues to set up her son with available single women knowing that Mike has eyes for someone else. Six years grieving the only woman he believes he will ever love finds Mike an unwilling victim of his family’s attempts at matchmaking. But everyone sees that Mike and Del are perfect for one another, if only the couple in question could see the same thing.

Marie Harte pulls the reader into a story of love and loss, moving forward and letting go, family and friends. The McCauley Boys series focuses on four brothers, bonded by love and blood, who find love with the one person who understands that extended family is part of the deal. The stories are intimate, intense, addicting and provocative. Marie Harte takes aim at your heart and hits a bulls-eye every time.

He leaned down, so that his nose was all but touching hers. “Sweetheart, you couldn’t handle what I’m really made of.”

Stupid Del wanted to drag his stubborn mouth closer for the kiss she could all but taste. From the look in his eyes, he wanted the same. Mike might not like her much, but the man wanted her. She could feel the chemistry between them, and it burned.

Self-preservation reared its head, and she ducked under him and hustled to the door leading to the hall. She opened it and waited. “Don’t let it hit you in the ass, Mike.”

He chuckled as he sauntered to join her. “You’ll watch what you say around Colin?”

“Yep. When I see him Wednesday night, I promise to call you a buttwipe instead of an asshole. Fair?”

He sighed. “Guess it’ll have to do. For now.” To her shock, he dragged a rough finger down her exposed neck. “Nice hair, by the way. I like the braids pulled back. Shows off your pretty neck. No tats here, sweetness?”

She didn’t know what to say, frozen by the combustible lust and confusion drowning her system.

He stared into her eyes again, gave a satisfied smile, then left.

She watched his fine ass leave the building, heard a few choice remarks from the guys in the garage who also watched him leave, and yelled at them to get back to work. Then she slammed into her office and plopped her butt in her chair, staring without seeing at the mess on her desk.

She rubbed her neck over the spot he’d touched and tried to be madder about what he’d done. What he’d called her.

Sweetness?

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date October 7, 2014

Shy.
Intelligent.
Naive.
Statistic.

Raine Forester was an average girl leading an average life. She slipped beneath everyone’s radar, until Camron Moss, the most popular guy in school, took interest in her and changed everything.

Some acts are unforgivable.

Raine thought she’d been accepted. She thought she was one of them. She thought she was in love… until one moment made her realize she’d trusted the wrong person. Lies are told, hearts get broken, secrets are revealed, and sometimes, true love is found in the least likely places.

••••••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: RAINE is a stand alone, contemporary, new adult storyline from author J.C. Valentine. The premise focuses on a year in the life of high school senior Raine Forester and the actions of a boy that almost destroyed that life.

The storyline follows Raine in the aftermath of an assault that not only destroyed her reputation but destroyed her family as well. Shy, introverted and unpopular Raine is as much surprised as anyone else when the most popular and rich boy at school, Camron Moss, asks her out. For two months, Raine’s life is sunshine and happiness until the night of their senior prom where not only will the truth be revealed but her life will be ruined in the process. Enter Jarret Moss, Camron’s older brother and the only person who will stand up for Raine when the going gets rough.

The relationship between Jarret and Raine is one born out of necessity. With no place to go, Jarret offers Raine a place to stay but accepting the invitation places Raine in direct contact with her ex-boyfriend’s family and friends. As the storyline builds, so too does the relationship between Jarret and Raine-one that could end disastrously if Jarret’s family has anything to say.

The premise outline and secondary characters are similar in context to many young adult (YA) storylines including the mean girl, the jealousy, the set up, the revenge, and the ever present vindictive parents and manipulating ex yet the storyline has been labeled new adult. This is a story about a young eighteen year old girl who is targeted by the school bullies and snobs, and in doing so, will destroy a young woman’s reputation before she has had a chance to blossom and grow. Raine must grow up rather quickly when life as she knows it changes in the blink of an eye. Jarret and Raine are likeable characters, if not heartbreakingly so, given the context of each of their lives. We never do learn why it is Raine is targeted by the school snobs-why she will become the pawn in a dare-and in this I was left wondering where it all began.

Overall, the story was an easy read with a familiar and interesting premise but there were moments where the storyline was choppy as though pieces of information were missing. I would have liked some more background information about both of the leading characters but the storyline focused on ‘one year in the life’ more than their history or what led up to the pivotal storyline moment. My major concern is the lack of development with the leading characters considering everything that happened in the story and the lack of resolution in some of the pivotal plot points (ie Jarret’s paintings and their significance to the overall story); weeks and months pass without a glimpse into Raine and Jarret’s growing relationship, or knowing what has happened to some of the other game players in the ensuing time.

RAINE is a heartbreaking tale of betrayal and hurt that will be all too familiar for some readers but it is a storyline with a happily ever after and in the end, it is the happily ever after that everyone wants.

excerpt

Raine’s thoughts were a swirl of sensation and emotion, all threatening to consume her. Jarret was kissing her. The act was so sudden, so unexpected, it wrenched a startled moan of pleasure from somewhere deep inside. Unbidden, her body leaned into his, and her fingers dug into the hard flesh of his solid triceps.
The man was built.
She knew Jarret must take good care of himself just by the perfect way in which his clothes hugged his body, as if they wanted to get closer and never let him go. Pretty much what she suspected most girls felt like when they set eyes on him.
Then he’d come down the stairs soaking wet from his shower and wrapped only in a towel, and he’d blown whatever lame ass fantasy she might have had about him right out the window.
Jarret was absolute perfection. He was all honed muscle that a man his age shouldn’t be able to have, and that only came with years of hard work and dedication.
Not that she was an expert in bodybuilding, but she’d seen the kind of constant, strenuous activity Camron and his teammates performed in order to get and stay in shape for the season.
Having her hands wrapped around all that muscle made her stomach flutter, and when Jarret tilted her head to the side and deepened the kiss, her legs threatened to give out. It was a good thing she was already sitting down.
Snaking one arm around her, Jarret crushed Raine against his chest. His other hand still cupping her face moved to the back of her head, closing in a fist around her hair, and held her tight as he plunged his tongue inside her mouth.
Holy crap, the man could kiss, too.
Raine wasn’t new to kissing. Camron had taught her much, but Jarret’s mouth felt like a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Good Lord, she hoped it wasn’t.
His lips were a contradiction—soft but firm, hard but forgiving, demanding but cautious. The longer it went on, the more her body craved. Raine let out a whimper as he nipped her bottom lip with his teeth, and gripped him tighter, wanting more, wanting everything.
He’d turned something on inside of her, like a switch. Something she didn’t know she wanted, but now had to have. Desperately.
Instead of giving her body what it craved, Jarret pulled away. Her head still spinning from the amazing kiss, Raine fell forward. Grabbing her shoulders, Jarret steadied her.
His lips glistened from her kiss, and Raine couldn’t seem to take her eyes off them. Never taking his eyes from hers, Jarret wiped his lips dry with his fingertips. Taking a deep breath, he motioned to the living room.
“I’m going to get dressed then order a movie.”

Blood Magick by Nora Roberts – a Review

Blood Magick by Nora Roberts – a Review

Blood Magick
The Cousins O’Dwyer trilogy – Book #3
by Nora Roberts
Release Date: October 28, 2014

Blood MagickAmazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / The Book Depository / BAM

Description:
County Mayo is rich in the traditions of Ireland, legends that Branna O’Dwyer fully embraces in her life and in her work as the proprietor of The Dark Witch shop, which carries soaps, lotions, and candles for tourists, made with Branna’s special touch.

Branna’s strength and selflessness hold together a close circle of friends and family—along with their horses and hawks and her beloved hound. But there’s a single missing link in the chain of her life: love…

She had it once—for a moment—with Finbar Burke, but a shared future is forbidden by history and blood. Which is why Fin has spent his life traveling the world to fill the abyss left in him by Branna, focusing on work rather than passion.

Branna and Fin’s relationship offers them both comfort and torment. And though they succumb to the heat between them, there can be no promises for tomorrow. A storm of shadows threatens everything that their circle holds dear. It will be Fin’s power, loyalty, and heart that will make all the difference in an age-old battle between the bonds that hold their friends together and the evil that has haunted their families for centuries.

Review:

Blood Magick by Nora Roberts is the 3rd and final book in her The Cousins O’Dwyer trilogy. I couldn’t wait to start this book, as I knew it would be up to Branna and Fin to have their story, and once again, Nora completes this trilogy so well. I love all of Nora’s books that take place in Ireland, as well as those that deal with witchcraft. Nora is one of the best that creates such wonderful characters, especially in her trilogies. We loved Iona and Boyle in book 1; adored Connor and Meara in book 2; but we couldn’t wait for Branna and Fin.

In the last two books, during their face to face battle with the sorcerer, Cabhan, they hurt him and were close to destroying him. But he was able to escape and spend time to heal himself, before he would come back after them. The three witches, Branna, Connor and Iona are supplemented by Fin, who is also a witch. In the end, it will take a few changes to increase the attack for a chance to finally win.

Branna and Fin have loved each other since they were teenagers, but after she discovered that Fin had the mark of Cabhan, she pushed herself away. The evil curse of Cabhan has been around for 100 years. As they got older, they remained friends, as Fin was close to the other 4. But Fin has spent years searching for a way to remove his mark and the curse put on by original witch murdered by Cabhan (Scorcha) to anyone with sorcerer’s blood. Branna has always trusted Fin, and knows that Fin will play an important part in the final battle against Cabhan, who is now getting stronger, with another source of evil driving him.

Branna is the strongest one, confident, powerful, determined, loving; as she makes potions, spells and plans to be ready for the next battle against Cabhain. With all this going on; all 6 of them (their circle) work together, with the animals (a hawk, hound and horse) helping each other to support and do whatever is necessary to win this fight, even with the danger they could lose lives.

It was great to spend time with them all, as Nora allows us to feel like we are part of them. Nora always gives us details about Ireland, past and present; not to mention all the wonderful food dishes that Branna mostly makes for the meetings they all have. Everything is done so well. I loved every moment.

Most of all, this was a special romance between Branna and Fin. One that was doomed and looked hopeless, with both of them suffering all those years. Branna finally follows through on her feelings, especially with all the pressure building of the upcoming battle, she allows herself to succumb to Fin. It was done so beautifully, and I loved their love finally coming together. However, Fin still had the mark, and once the battle was over, would they still stay together?

I do not want to spoil what happens for those who will read the book. I will say it was an exciting climax, and a satisfying ending that Nora usually does. This was a wonderful trilogy filled with romance, three great couples, magic, fantasy, witches, animals, time travel, bad villain, and Ireland. I strongly suggest you read The Cousin’s O’Dwyer to have yourself a fun, romantic and exciting read.

The Story of Fester Cat by Paul Magrs – Review

The Story of Fester Cat by Paul Magrs – Review

The Story of Fester CatAmazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / The Book Depository / BAM

Description:
I always knew that the rest of my story is gonna be a good one. I don’t know how I knew that, but I always did. Ungow! I am Fester the cat. Welcome to my book, everyone!

From when he first ambled into Paul Magrs’s yard—skinny, covered in flea bites, and missing all but one and a half teeth—Fester knew he’d found his family. Paul and his partner, Jeremy, thought it was the ragged black-and-white stray, tired from a rough life on the streets, who was in desperate need of support. But clever Fester knew better. He understood that it was his newfound owners who needed the help.

Over the course of seven years, the feisty feline turned the quaint Manchester house into a loving home. Through his fierce spirit, strong will, and calming energy, Fester taught Paul and Jeremy how to listen and breathe, how to appreciate the joys of simply sitting and singing (what Fester’s purrs sounded like to his silly humans), and how to find joy and contentment in life, even when dealing with hardship.

This is the true story of an extraordinary little cat whose gentle charm and trusting soul turned two young men into a family.

Review:

When I was offered to read The Story of Fester Cat by Paul Magrs, I wasn’t sure if this was something that would fit into our reviews at TRC. I am a cat lover, and have enjoyed some cat mystery books, especially Shirley Rousseau Murphy and her Joe Grey series. But The Story of Fester Cat was a true story, which I knew would also be an emotional read.

The description above tells it all. Fester was a stray cat and found his home at the age of 12. Unusual for a stray to live in the outside world so long, but Fester was destined to meet his family in Paul and Jeremy. There is no question that Fester adopted them when he innocently walked into their lives, and this story is told by Fester’s point of view. Very well done, with lots of humor.

The story starts in an unusual way, which took me by surprise. It starts at the end, when Fester is not feeling well, can’t understand why he can’t do the things he normally could. He is after all 18 y ears old. We get to know Fester, and his love of his family and share the moment we all dread, saying goodbye. This left me sad, and wondering how this story would play out. But have no fear, it then starts at the beginning, when Fester was a stray, and his friends in the wild. We see how he finds Paul and Jeremy, and from there on in, I was happy to follow this fun, humorous and enjoyable story. We learn about the hairdresser (the vet), who fixes up Fester from the things he endured living outside, like fleas, skin disorders, gum disease, etc. Watching how he bonds with his family, the love they felt for each other, and how Fester meets their friends and family. Through hard times, and good times, it is Fester who keeps Paul and Jeremy together, as they equally love him. You also get a glimpse at some other cats who are friends of Fester, like Bessie, and Korky. The Story of Fester Cat is also about Paul and Jeremy, and their own family issues.

Fester manages to give us the joy of following his tale of life in a home filled with love; meeting the friends and family, some he liked and some he did not. At the end of the book, Paul gives a beautiful eulogy for Fester, who changed his life. This is a different read, but a really nice story, filled with humor, love, and sadness. You don’t have to be a cat lover to enjoy this book, but if you are, it’s a do not miss.
