•••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: UNTIL YOU FIND ME is the first installment in Amber Hart’s contemporary, new adult Until You Find Me series focusing on twenty year old Raven Moore, an American student and twenty one year old Jospin Tondjii from Cameroon. This is not your typical new adult romance as a portion of the storyline focuses on gorilla poaching and endangered species in the jungle. UNTIL YOU FIND ME is a unique storyline in the new adult genre, atypical of the usual relationship angst and anxiety but there are definite dark secrets and destructive pasts.

Told from alternating first person points of view (Raven and Jospin) the premise follows Raven as she embarks on a journey to Cameroon where months earlier her father was killed in a supposed gorilla attack. But weeks before his death, Raven’s father sent a letter to his daughter urgently requesting her presence in Cameroon. Hoping to uncover the truth about her father’s death and what is was her father was so desperately trying to tell her, Raven will befriend a young local hunter named Jospin who is hiding a dark and dangerous secret.

The relationship and storyline is slow to build as Raven reflects on her past, her parents and her earlier times in Cameroon. A portion of the story looks at endangered species, big game poaching (especially gorillas) and the price of intervention. Raven will be injured and during her recovery she will befriend a captured gorilla named Leachim who is able to communicate and bond with our heroine. Most of the story takes place in the jungles of Cameroon.

We will be introduced to Jospin’s father-a man who is quick to kill with no regrets- and Jospin’s friend Clovis who will become an ally in the war against poaching. A rehabilitation habitat for gorillas will be home to Raven as she continues her search for the truth behind her father’s death and in this she will learn that evil has the face of many disguises.

There are some questionable scenarios throughout the storyline and if you can get past the ‘unreality’ of the situations, the storyline is entertaining and will definitely make you think. The storyline ends on a bit of a cliff hanger so be forewarned.

UNTIL YOU FIND ME is a story of friendship and bonding; romance and love; murder and revenge. There is intrigue, suspense, mystery and action woven through a storyline about the plight and poaching of endangered species.

Description:
At the dawn of time, there were 13 Houses in the Zodiac Galaxy. Now only 12 remain….

Rhoma Grace is a 16-year-old student from House Cancer with an unusual way of reading the stars. While her classmates use measurements to make accurate astrological predictions, Rho can’t solve for ‘x’ to save her life—so instead, she looks up at the night sky and makes up stories.

When a violent blast strikes the moons of Cancer, sending its ocean planet off-kilter and killing thousands of citizens—including its beloved Guardian—Rho is more surprised than anyone when she is named the House’s new leader. But, a true Cancerian who loves her home fiercely and will protect her people no matter what, Rho accepts.

Then, when more Houses fall victim to freak weather catastrophes, Rho starts seeing a pattern in the stars. She suspects Ophiuchus—the exiled 13th Guardian of Zodiac legend—has returned to exact his revenge across the Galaxy. Now Rho—along with Hysan Dax, a young envoy from House Libra, and Mathias, her guide and a member of her Royal Guard—must travel through the Zodiac to warn the other Guardians.

But who will believe anything this young novice says? Whom can Rho trust in a universe defined by differences? And how can she convince twelve worlds to unite as one Zodiac?

Embark on a dazzling journey with ZODIAC, the first novel in an epic sci-fi-meets-high-fantasy series set in a galaxy inspired by the astrological signs.

Review:

Zodiac by Romina Russell is the first book in her new YA Sci-Fi/ Fantasy series, which though different, can also be considered dystopian. This storyline revolves around astrology, with each sign being its own House. There are 12 Houses, and the world building in this book is nothing short of fantastic.

We meet our heroine Rhoma as a young child, who is constantly being taught by her mother about the galaxy, the houses, and how to use her powers to foresee the future through the psy energy. We next meet Rho as a teenager (16), who is practicing in a schoolroom prior to a test. Rho doesn’t do things exactly the way the teachers at school expect her to. When she does take the test looking at the galaxy, she sees a dark mass, which no one else can see. The teachers do not believe Rho, until a short time later, the House of Cancer (Rho’s house) is attacked, with fragments effecting other houses. Each house has a guardian, and during the attack on Cancer, the Guardian was killed, leaving so few to follow. Rho is put through a series of tests by the surviving leaders of Cancer, and to her shock, she is made the new Guardian.

Rho sees more dark mass coming, and forces herself to use her powers to see what is causing these unknown attacks. As she reaches out through the psy energy, Rho senses someone else out there. Someone who is controlling the dark mass, someone evil. When Rho investigates a long ago myth about a 13th House, she begins to realize that the myth is true. Ochus and the 13th house is real, and they have come to destroy or take over all the other houses. But no one will believe Rho.

What follows is an amazing story, as Rho is determined to visit all the houses to warn them of the impending attacks, and the true nemesis that they will face. During this journey, we meet the two men that will help her. Mathias is a top Lodestar of Cancer, who has been assigned to protect her. Hysan is a young Libra ambassador, with knowledge of advanced technology, who immediately becomes her friend. Together, they spend the exciting, at times frustrating journey, in this difficult task to make people realize that a myth is real. Needless to say this is an almost impossible task, but Rho despite her failure, is determined to keep pushing forward.

It is an exciting and very well written tale of a futuristic world along the Zodiac solar system, which I found very interesting. Each of the Houses have different specialties, and as we travel through the planets/houses, we get to meet some really different and nice characters along the way. Yes this is a love triangle, but not truly acted upon. We just know that she cares about both men.

Romina Russell has given us a different type of dystopian storyline, in a Sci-Fi world that is really fascinating. After reading this book, which was difficult to put down, I have come to respect Russell for her ability to put this together so well. The ending was sort of a cliffhanger that us anxiously waiting to return to this world.

Upside DownIf You Never Get Lost, You’ll Never Be Found

Twenty-one-year-old Natalia Stolfi is saying good-bye to the past-and turning her life upside down with a trip to the land down under. For the next six months, she’ll act like a carefree exchange student, not a girl sinking under the weight of painful memories. Everything is going according to plan until she meets a brooding surfer with hypnotic green eyes and the troubling ability to see straight through her act.

Bran Lockhart is having the worst year on record. After the girl of his dreams turned into a nightmare, he moved back home to Melbourne to piece his life together. Yet no amount of disappointment could blind him to the pretty California girl who gets past all his defenses. He’s never wanted anyone the way he wants Talia. But when Bran gets a stark reminder of why he stopped believing in love, he and Talia must decide if what they have is once in a lifetime . . . or if they were meant to live a world apart.

•••••••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: UPSIDE DOWN is the first installment in Lia Riley’s contemporary, new adult OFF THE MAP romance series focusing on twenty one year old American Natalia (Talia) Stolfi and twenty three year old Aussie environmental activist Bran Lockhart.

Told from two first person points of view (Talia and some Bran) UPSIDE DOWN follows Natalia Stolfi-Talia as she is called-to Australia. For six months Talia wants to escape the darkness and oppressive memories back home but there are demons that follow Talia wherever she goes and these demons cannot be controlled. When she ‘accidentally’ meets mysterious, brooding and a not so friendly Aussie named Bran Lockhart, her life will change forever. Bran is hiding a secreted past filled with heartbreak and pain. When Talia uncovers what she believes to be true, she will only see what is on the surface and not the soul deep anguish that controls Bran and everything he does.

Both Bran and Talia’s past are mired in painful heartbreak, loss and dysfunctional family dynamics. While Talia escapes to Australia to hide from her past, Bran has been whoring around town trying to forget about what could have been. These two broken souls will find one another at a time when both need something more but Bran refuses to look beyond the moment until the possibility of losing Talia forever is something he will not allow.

The relationship between Bran and Talia starts off acrimoniously and is slow to build as Bran is cautious of what he wants and where he wants to go. Jazza (Bran’s friend) is attracted to the American beauty but Talia does not see Jazza as anything more than a friend. Bran will become Talia’s protector and a friend with benefits but love will become a real possibility when the hearts knows what it wants. There are moments of intimacy and passion as our couple dance around going ‘all the way’ but the journey to consummation is sensual and erotic.

We will be introduced to Talia’s Bohemian, slightly off centered and destructive mother, and emotionally absent father; Talia’s colorful roommate Marti; and a few of Bran’s friends and frenemies that will make life difficult for Talia and Bran; and Bran’s uncle Chris whose lifestyle is less than ordinary but a man who sees more than most. The world building takes the reader from the night life and parties into the crashing waves of Australia’s surf and the Tasmanian landscape. A little background history into both families will reveal a sad and lonely existence for both of our leading players. Talia’s need to work for the Peace Corps and Bran’s ideology of a greener, cleaner earth will eventually build a wall that may be too high to climb over.

UPSIDE DOWN ends rather abruptly with a happily ever after –for now. Everything is wrapped up neatly with an apology and a promise for the future. Where does that leave Talia’s desire for entering the Peace Corps? Here’s looking forward to book two –Sideswiped.

It was only meant to last the summer . . .

Talia Stolfi has seen more than her share of loss in her twenty-one years. But then fate brought her Bran Lockhart, and her dark world was suddenly and spectacularly illuminated. So if being with Bran means leaving her colorless NorCal life for rugged and wild Australia, then that’s what she’ll do. But as much as Talia longs to give herself over completely to a new beginning, the fears of her past are still lurking in the shadows.

Bran Lockhart knows that living without the beautiful girl who stole his heart will be torment, so he’ll take whatever time with her he can. But even though she has packed up her life in California and is back in his arms for the time being, she can’t stay forever. And the remaining time they have together is ticking by way too fast. Though fate seems determined to tear them apart, they won’t give up without a fight—because while time may have limits, their love is infinite.

•••••••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: SIDESWIPED is the second installment in Lia Riley’s contemporary, new adult OFF THE MAP romance series focusing on Talia Stolfi and Bran Lockhart. Their continuing story finds our couple reunited in Australia where life together is anything but easy. From difficult family situations to finishing up thesis papers and more, Talia and Bran will discover that there is more to life than hot sex and moonlit nights. Life has a funny way of getting in the way when desires and past dreams becomes front and center.

Told from alternating first person points of view (Talia and Bran) the storyline follows Bran and Talia’s tumultuous relationship. Talia’s increasing struggles with OCD begin to spiral out of control when family issues for both Bran and herself take a decidedly darker turn. Talia reconsiders what it is she wants from life when the Peace Corps begins calling her name. While Bran has given up his need for the Sea Alliance environmental cause, there is still the hope that one day he will become an active volunteer. Talia will make the decision to move on but not out of Bran’s life; Bran is unable to understand Talia’s desire for something more.

There is no denying Bran and Talia’s love for one another-one riddled with jealousy, concern, heartbreak and mistrust. Bran and Talia’s pasts and their family histories have scarred our couple with emotional and psychological wounds that have yet to heal. Add the potential for loss and Bran will be hurled into the despair of anguish and no hope.

The secondary characters include Bran’s dysfunctional family-from a father who desires a reconciliation with his son and a mother who is more concerned about appearances, Bran must weather the storm that is family. Add a sister whose own marriage is collapsing, Bran struggles with the right thing to do. Talia’s parents continue on their individual journeys of isolation leaving Talia behind to deal with the fall out of her own dysfunctional family.

Lia Riley adds moments of humor, smexy fun and heartbreaking pain to a series that focuses on two wounded and broken souls. The ending felt a little rushed; there is no real cliff hanger but a wait and see kind of finish. Talia and Bran will continue to struggle with their relationship but their love for one another has never been in question. It is only when Talia and Bran will head in opposite directions does the real meaning of love begins to take hold.

Inside OutWhen Talia first moved from California to Australia to study abroad, she never dreamed she’d find the love of her life. Bran understands her like no one ever has before. And despite the numerous challenges they’ve faced, they’ve always managed to figure out how to stay together. But this time they’ll face their toughest hurdle yet. Is their love strong enough to keep them together?

REVIEW: INSIDE OUT is the third installment in Lia Riley’s contemporary, new adult INSIDE OUT romance series focusing on twenty one year old American Natalia (Talia) Stolfi and twenty three year old Aussie environmental activist Bran Lockhart. Their continuing story finds Talia in Malawi, Africa as a Peace Corps volunteer while Bran Lockhart works for Sea Alliance touring the Antarctic trying to stop the dolphin and whale hunting expeditions.

Told from alternating first person points of view (Bran and Talia) the storyline focuses on the rebuilding of Bran and Talia’s troubled relationship but four months into Talia’s Peace Corps program, things aren’t going as planned and Talia finds herself fighting for her life. Bran will say goodbye to his time in the Antarctic to help nurse a reluctant and depressed Talia back from the brink.

Talia is a young woman who suffers and barely survives with several OCDs and in this her inability to let go hinders her relationship with Bran. It is during her recovery where the storyline takes a decidedly different and not pleasant turn when Talia’s constant negativity leaves the reader frustrated and at odds with the character’s fluctuating personality. Bran, as well as Talia’s father, must endure Talia’s unending self-deprecation and loathing so much so that life for Bran becomes difficult and heartbreaking. Once Talia is able to get past this particular point in her life, her relationship with Bran will begin to flourish but not before past issues and future considerations must be addressed.

Lia Riley’s emotional and compelling OFF THE MAP series focuses on one woman’s struggle with OCD and the roller coaster of emotions that threaten her relationship with the man that she loves. Brandon Lockhart fights who he is; who he was; and where he came from and in this he is a man who is constantly moving, looking for a place to call home-he will find his home in Talia Stolfi. Bran and Talia’s relationship is a roller coaster of emotions with passionate and sensual moments of love and understanding; and heartbreaking scenes of helplessness and loss.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date December 2, 2014

The gossip mill in the seaside community of Monterey is churning about Chloe Patterson, the newcomer who is starting a sanctuary for rescued pit bulls. It’s rumored that she’s a former beauty queen (true) who ditched her fiancé the morning of their wedding (also true). And that while she’s not looking for a new man, the good-looking local veterinarian has his eye on her. Absolutely, positively true.

When Lucas Campbell isn’t at the family veterinary clinic, he’s paddle boarding in Monterey Bay. Recently single, he’s definitely not in the market for a new relationship, but he still can’t resist taking a second, third, and fourth look at the recent arrival of Miss Golden State.

Neither Lucas nor Chloe has any interest in being tied down. Being tied up, however—now there’s a thought. But are a few Mai Tais, a moonlit night, and the music of Frank Sinatra enough to allow them both to forget their past? Let’s hope Ol’ Blue Eyes knows what he’s doing.

Mix one part tiki, one part kinky, and a splash of old black magic matchmaking, and it’s time to be . . . Mai Tai’d Up.

••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: MAI TAI’D UP is the fourth full length installment in Alice Clayton’s contemporary, adult Wallbanger romance series. This is veterinarian Dr. Lucas Campbell and Chloe Patterson’s storyline. Chloe is Clark Barrow’s cousin whom we met in book three –Screwdrivered. Although MAI TAI’D UP is the fourth in the series, it can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from previous storylines is revealed where necessary.

Told from first person point of view (Chloe) MAI TAI’D UP focuses on runaway bride Chloe Patterson. Groomed by her mother from an early age to be the perfect wife and pageant queen, Chloe is tired of her mother’s rules. A few hours before her marriage to hot shot lawyer Charles Sappington, former beauty pageant winner Chloe has second, third and fourth thoughts about marrying a man she doesn’t love. Realizing there is no love match between her and her intended, Chloe takes off for father’s family farm in Monterey Bay, where she will begin work on a pit bull rescue clinic. Enter Dr. Lucas Campbell, the man with whom she would fall in love.

Lucas Campbell is heartbroken. Left at the altar by his own runaway bride, Lucas is having a difficult time accepting all that has happened. Meeting Chloe shows Lucas the possibility of a real happily ever after but Chloe has hidden the truth about her wedding fiasco.

The relationship between Chloe and Lucas is slow to build as our couple dance around one another for much of the storyline knowing that both could be rebounding from disastrous relationships. Lucas is preparing for a three month excursion to Belize, working with Veterinarians without Borders and Chloe is busy preparing her new pit bull rescue operation. There is plenty of sexual tension throughout the storyline but Chloe’s lie of omission has Lucas second guessing everything about their relationship.

The supporting characters are colorful and well developed including Chloe’s parents, and cameos by her cousin Clark and his fiancé Vivian-Clark and Vivian characters allow for cohesion and familiarity to the Wallbanger series. Chloe’s mother is a real piece work, living vicariously through her daughter’s pageant success. We are also introduced to Lucas’s parents as well as the office receptionist who is quite the matchmaker when she puts her mind to it. Both Chloe and Lucas’s exes make a couple of appearances throughout the story.

MAI TAI’D UP has moments of laughter, heartbreak, passion and drama. The building relationship between Chloe and Lucas is almost secondary to the pit bull rescue storyline and Chloe’s dysfunctional relationship with her mother. The sex scenes are limited ( and nearing the end of the story) as the bond between Chloe and Lucas continues to build-similar in context to a chic lit storyline. But unlike the original Wallbanger storyline, the humor and sexual energy is not as prevalent and missing some of its’ oomph ! The style of writing has changed with each series installment-not a bad thing, just different.

MAI TAI’D UP is a sweet, romantic and entertaining storyline with a happily ever after.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date November 29, 2014

He’s always saved her. Now she’s going to return the favor…

Gray Duffy never thought he’d end up as the co-lead guitarist of Oblivion, one of the hottest rock bands in the country. Even better? He’s sharing the experience with his best friend, Jazz. Since the day she’d showed up as his family’s new foster kid, Gray has protected her. Loved her. And not just platonically either. After all these years of wanting her in his bed, he still doesn’t know what it would be like to have her mouth on his.

Except for that one time. The time he’d shared her with Nick. The best worst night of his life.

Now they’re living their dream. They’re making music together and spending every waking moment trapped in tight quarters. With success at their fingertips, the time is right for him to finally make his move toward the woman he needs.

He just never figured he would lose control. Or that she would find out.

They’ve loved each other through everything. But what if this time love just isn’t enough?

•••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: TWISTED is the second full length storyline in Cari Quinn and Taryn Elliott’s Lost in Oblivion series focusing on the members of the rock band Oblivion. This is drummer Jasmine (Jazz) Edwards and guitarist Gray Duffy’s storyline-a friends to lovers trope that looks at second chances and forgiveness. TWISTED can be read as a stand alone but for background information, the band’s beginnings and cohesion I would strongly suggest reading in order.

Told from third person point of view alternating between past and present TWISTED follows the introduction between fourteen year old foster child Jasmine Edwards and Grayson Duffy-the young man who would one day break her heart-to present day. Jasmine grew up in foster care and at fourteen found herself living with the Duffy’s. Long story short, Gray and Jazz were attracted to one another immediately with Gray playing the protector and big brother to Jazz’s fragile ego. But a caustic and dangerous moment in time found an eighteen year old Jazz on the run, leaving Gray heartbroken and lost. Two years would pass before Jazz reconnected with the Gray and Gray was a changed man. Now that both were members of the up and coming rock band Oblivion, Gray’s life will begin to spiral out of control following a night he will never forget between Nick, Jazz and himself.

TWISTED is a storyline that follows present day with the rock band Oblivion alternating with a story about the past. Jazz never had an easy life and thought she had found a loving family with the Duffy’s but like many families there is a dark and dangerous side, one that Jazz would experience first hand. Even with Gray’s love and protection, Jazz would find herself alone again, on the run, with no one to care. While the members of Oblivion find themselves in lock down to get over their attitude and destructive egos, Jazz and Gray will take the next step in their relationship. The realization that Gray is falling deeper into addiction and despair comes with a darker threat against the woman that he loves.

All of the members of Oblivion (Simon, Nick, Deacon and Harper) including new PR manager Lila play an active role throughout the premise of TWISTED. As manager, Lila is the one who will have to take control when the band begins to implode and slowly destroy what is left of their image. Social media, addiction, inflated egos and revenge will take center stage for a band on the cusp of making it big.

Cari Quinn and Taryn Elliott pull from the reality that is the rock and roll lifestyle. There is betrayal, jealousy, excess and love. Everyone will be affected by the fall out of one night of passion between three friends, resulting in a tense relationship between the members of the band. LOST IN OBLIVION is an intense, dramatic and addicting series with moments of passion, heartbreak and erotic imagery.

The MacGregors: Highland Heirs Series #1.5 & #2 by Paula Quinn-reviews

The MacGregor Highland Heirs series

5 out of 5 for this reader folks!

Oh Paula Quinn, you are becoming a go to, fave, highlander romance author of mine. I do believe I am reading your books some what backwards but all the more fun for when I start at the beginning and already know what the future has held! 😉

This review is for the next two books (well a novella and full novel) of her Highland Heirs series. Just like the first book of this series,The Seduction of Miss Amelia Bell, we are set in early 18th century when Scotland was conflicting with England. The lasses are sassy, sweet and strong while the highlanders are determined to fight their fights and certainly flaunting the sexy as they capture their goals and their ladies. Some clans war from past conflicts and land while others bond together to keep their numbers strong. There is much action, brotherhood, heat, smexy passion, witty wenches, bitchy bitches and a natural flowing story that will keep you 100% engaged. If you have read Paula Quinn’s previous books then you will enjoy being reunited with many of her characters.

The Sweet Surrender of Janet BuchananBOOK 1.5 – The Sweet Surrender of Janet Buchanan
Release Date: October 7, 2014
Genre: adult, historical romance, Highlanders

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Amazon.uk/ Barnes and Noble / KOBO /

DESCRIPTION

SHE WOULD NOT BE CONQUERED . . .

Janet Buchanan is no man’s property. She refuses to marry her family’s sworn enemy-consequences be damned. She’d rather take a dagger to the brute herself. Yet when a tantalizing-and infuriating-man from her past comes to her rescue, Janet finds herself undeniably tempted by his hot, hungry kiss.

HE COULD NOT BE TAMED . . .

Notorious for his prowess as a lover and a fighter, Darach Grant has only one goal in mind: to defend his kin’s land from the impending siege of a hostile clan. The last thing he needs is the delicious distraction of Janet Buchanan-the only woman who can stir his ire as deeply as she warms his blood. But Janet’s intended will stop at nothing to claim her, forcing Darach to choose between surrendering his honor . . . or his heart.

REVIEW

We met Janet back in the first book after her clan had kidnapped Darach Grant. Janet is the sister of the clan chief and had been caring for Darach’s wounds while the negotiation for his release was settled. She showed much dislike for Darach but deep down you know her blood boiled for him.

Now many months later, Darach has been asked to return to his kins castle to help defend it against an enemy clan. Knowing he is about to face Janet Buchanan again, the woman who lit a huge fire and threatened to end his bad boy ways, he decides to go in head strong and allusive. That lasts for all of 30 secs because once these two reunite it’s GAME ON! When it is revealed that in hopes of peace, Janet may have to wed the enemy chief, Darach is determined to prevent this … even at the expense of his own heart.

These two lit up my ereader and I wish that they had a full novel. The push pull was antagonizing and captivating all at the same time and if two people were ever meant to be, it most certainly would be these two!

Already on route and refusing to turn back, Captain Kidd decides to drop them at a separate port and carry on. However, Trina the spitfire is making it awfully hard for him to keep his hands off of her .. that .. and she is pretty good at pirate life.

Fearing that her family will believe that she was kidnapped by the pirate, Trina struggles with the reality of falling in love and wanting this action packed life and knowing that if her clan finds then, her pirate has more trouble than the seas … daddy’s wrath. It turns out however, there is even bigger trouble they need to be concerned about .. trouble that is deceptive, cruel and heart wrenching.

The chemistry these two have is off the charts but I have to say my fave thing about Trina was her ability to make the entire crew just gush over her. 🙂

Both were excellent reads that left me very pleased. Endearing moments that were surrounded by laughter, heart ache and so much action, I have to say I would ABSOLUTELY RECOMMEND these books!

HAPPY READING! 🙂

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date December 4, 2014

Eve Perroniʼs quest to find her past leaves no time for love, until a chance prediction leads to the seductive Ky Ransom and a destiny that could make—or break—both their hearts.

Reeling from the death of her mother and the realization that she was adopted, Eve Perroni embarks on a quest to find her birth family. A chance encounter with a mysterious fortune-teller leads her to the Australian bush and Cavanagh Cottage, the birthplace of her infamous outlaw ancestor. She intends to research and write the story of her past, but in doing so finds herself in direct conflict with charismatic developer Kyan Ransom—the very man she has been told will fulfil her heart’s desire for a future centered around family…if she will just allow herself to love him.

Ky needs Cavanagh Cottage almost as much as Eve, and he has the money to get what he wants. Every single time. Can these two souls on a collision course find the true love that has been predicted, when everything they are searching for could be snatched away at any moment?

Heart’s Destiny was first published as part of the multi-author boxed set, Seduction – One Fortune at a Time (Cupid Publishing, 2 Sept 2014). This individual novella edition contains several expanded scenes.

••••••••••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: HEART’S DESTINY is an adult, contemporary, erotic romance novella by Jennifer Lynne. Originally released in the September 2014 anthology-Seduction: One Fortune at a Time-HEART’S DESTINY focuses on Eve Perroni and developer Ky Ransom.

Told from third person point of view, HEART’S DESTINY follows Eve Perroni as she endeavors to uncover the history behind her birth family. Just prior to her mother’s death, it was revealed she was adopted and is descended from an infamous outlaw. When Cavanagh Cottage, her ancestor’s birthplace, comes up for auction, Eve knows it is something she must pursue. A local gypsy woman will reveal that a man named Ky is her destiny and to be sure to give him a chance. Ky is the man who will become Eve’s only other competitor for the ownership of Cavanagh Cottage. Ky has promised Cavanagh Cottage to someone else and he will make Eve an offer she cannot refuse.

The relationship between Ky and Eve is one of instant attraction, lust and love. The two are immediately drawn to one another as though predetermined by destiny and the fates. It is only a matter of hours to days that each will profess their love and need for one another. The sex scenes are erotic and seductive.  The secondary characters include Eve’s friend and journalist Tom, and Ky’s sister Chantel.

HEART’S DESTINY is a fast paced, interesting and telling storyline that focuses on two people who would never have met but for a death bed confession by Eve’s dying mother. Because the storyline is quick to develop, there is very little personal background information or history with regards to Eve and Ky. HEART’S DESTINY is about one woman trying to reclaim the past; family and falling in love.

Interview

TRC: Hi Jennifer and welcome back to The Reading Café.
Jennifer LynneJennifer: Hi Sandy, thanks so much for having me to visit once again. I love The Reading Café and am appreciative of all you do to support the romance reading/writing community.

TRC: For anyone who does not know Jennifer Lynne, would you please tell us something about yourself?

FOLLOW: WebsiteFacebook /Twitter/

Jennifer: I’m a mum of four (two daughters, a step-daughter and step-son) who lives in Melbourne, Australia. I work in admin by day, and at night I indulge my fantasies by writing short contemporary erotic romance – often with paranormal elements. I’ve been published by Red Sage and Breathless Press, and a couple of years ago took the plunge into indie publishing with my GODS OF LOVE series of erotic novellas that bring mythology (and sexy Greek gods) into a modern-day world.

TRC: Who or what influenced your career in writing?

Jennifer: I’ve always loved books and reading and in fact have a degree in Literature. Over the years a bit of dabbling in writing became first a rather consuming hobby, and then a professional career. In that time, organisations such as Romance Writers of Australia have had a huge influence in terms of motivation and honing my craft. I’m also a member of Romance Writers of America, and the Melbourne Romance Writer’s Guild which is a supportive group of local writers.

TRC: When not writing, what do you do to relax?

Jennifer: I work four days a week at a university, and yes, I have teenagers in the house, so that pretty much takes up my whole life outside of writing! On the rare occasions I have time to myself, I love reading. A perfect day for me would involve gentle rain outside, a cozy log fire inside, and me on the couch with a glass of red wine, a good book, and one of our three cats on my lap.

TRC: Is there any profession that you would have liked to enter but never had the opportunity?

Jennifer: When I was young I wanted to be a famous gymnast. Then I grew up and decided I wanted to be a writer! ☺

Heart's DestinyTRC: December 4, 2014 is the release date for HEART’S DESTINY. Would you please tell us something about the premise?

Jennifer: HEART’S DESTINY was first published as part of a multi-author boxed set, called SEDUCTION – ONE FORTUNE AT A TIME, back in September. The overarching premise of the set was that a fortune-teller’s prediction in each novella would lead to love and hopefully a happy-ever-after for each heroine and her hero.

In HEART’S DESTINY, my heroine Eve has recently lost both her mother and her identity. The quest to uncover her past leaves no time for love, until a chance prediction by a mysterious fortune-teller leads Eve directly into the path of Kyan Ransom and a destiny that could make – or break – both their hearts.

This is a novella-length story, but it packs a lot in to a short space. HEART’S DESTINY is about many interwoven themes – the complexity of family, loyalty, trust, and about the importance of growth and moving forward rather than stagnating in the past.

TRC: Is HEART’S DESTINY a stand-alone storyline or do you have plans for a series?

Jennifer: I wrote HEART’S DESTINY as a stand-alone, but there are a couple of potential spin-off stories that I’m tempted to explore. One is the story of Rasa, the fortune-teller. Who is this mysterious woman who can predict love for others but seems so alone? The other is an historical romance – the story of Eve’s infamous ancestors, Sarah and Joe Cavanagh.

TRC: What challenges or difficulties (research, logistics, background) did you encounter writing this particular storyline?

Jennifer: I think the main challenge was knowing that HEART’S DESTINY would sit in the first instance alongside six other stories with the same premise, and yet it also needed to be able to stand-alone. I’m very happy with how it turned out, and have been able to expand some of the scenes in this slightly longer version.

TRC: When writing a storyline, do the characters direct the writing or do you direct the characters?

Jennifer: Definitely the characters! Sometimes they take me on a path I never even imagined could exist. I do try and wrestle them back to where I need them to be, but they just ignore me. I’ve learnt to listen to my characters – they usually know best.

TRC: Are you a plotter or pantser (write by the seat of your pants !)?

Jennifer: Pantser, 100%.

TRC: What’s next for your GODS OF LOVE series?

Gods of love series

Jennifer: I’m currently finishing ICE QUEEN, the sixth novella in my GODS OF LOVE series, which I’m hoping to release in January. This is the story of Meika, a former killer whose heart is frozen in darkness. Eros, the god-king of desire may well have met his match – he will need all the combined power of the erotes to melt Meika’s heart.

Ice QueenICE QUEEN was to be the last in the series, but I think there are many story possibilities still to explore, so I’m planning to keep going! So many Greek gods and goddesses with fascinating mythological backgrounds, and of course, so many mortals in need of sexual healing and love in this harsh modern-day world of ours.

TRC: The mark of a good writer is to pull the reader into the storyline so that they experience the emotions along with the characters. What do you believe a writer must do to make this happen? Where do you believe writer’s fail in this endeavor?

Jennifer: I think the key is to draw the reader as deeply as possible into the character’s point of view. Show rather than tell your story. As soon as you inject a narrator’s voice, the reader becomes less immersed in the experience. To give a short example from HEART’S DESTINY, instead of saying something like: “Eve felt excited at the thought of making love to Ky”, we go deeper into her thoughts for a (hopefully!) more impactful experience:

What would it feel like, to be trapped beneath someone like you? To hand over power and control, to be totally at your mercy, thrashing in a parody of escape, only to have every thrusting movement drive you deeper, make you harder. Send you over the edge, taking me with you…

TRC: Writer’s Block is a very real phenomenon. How do you handle the pressures and anxiety of writer’s block?

Jennifer: I’m highly familiar with writer’s block, unfortunately. Our family has had a few health dramas in recent years and I find that the more drained I am emotionally, the less I’m able to write. I used to worry and obsess over it, but these days, I try and give myself permission to take time away from writing when I feel drained. Trying to reconnect with why you want to write in the first place is also helpful. Eventually, if you give yourself time and space, the well of creativity starts to fill once again. I can’t imagine a life without writing, so I try not to worry too much when “it” just isn’t happening.

TRC: What three things would you like to accomplish in the next five years?

Jennifer: In terms of my writing, making the USA Today Bestselling Author list would be very nice! How about we add in the NY Times Bestseller List too? And last but not least, I’d love to be making a living from my writing – that has been my dream for so long, and giving up the day job is what I work towards every time I sit down at the computer to write. ☺

TRC: What is something that few, if any people, know about you?

Jennifer: I was skipping down the grass beside our driveway when I was child and fell down a sinkhole. I had to hang on to the edge of the concrete drive by my fingers. I eventually, somehow, climbed out and the council workers who came out to fix it discovered a leaking pipe had washed away the earth beneath. A terrifying experience that left a lasting emotional scar, for sure.

TRC: On what are you currently working?

Jennifer: I’ve started work on a new highly erotic collection called NOT VANILLA. This will include a series of short novellas about fetish fantasies such as voyeurism, light bondage, ménage, exhibitionism and a few other fun little topics!

Then I’ll be heading in the other direction with a non-erotic romance series of full-length novels about bridesmaid myths. To differentiate the erotic from the non-erotic works, my brand-new alter ego, Jen Katemi, will be writing the non-erotic books 😉 Overall, I’m very excited about what 2015 will bring.

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Jennifer: I’d just like to say a huge thank you for having me to visit once again, and for those who plan to read HEART’S DESTINY, I do hope you enjoy it.

TRC: Thank you Jennifer for taking the time to answer our questions. Congratulations on all of your success.

Jennifer: My pleasure, Sandy!

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date December 2, 2014

She Needs a Hero…

Abby Thompson didn’t sign up to be the daughter of the President of the United States. The position was forced on her by the small matter of her birth. Preferring a quiet life of study, she’s content to leave the politics and the international intrigue to her father. Unfortunately, the most powerful man on the planet is sure to make enemies. When a group of armed thugs takes her hostage half a world away, demanding the U.S. government release prisoners in exchange for her safe return, she fears her father’s policy of “not negotiating with terrorists” means she’ll never see the shores of the Potomac again. Luckily, there’s one glimmer of hope. His name is Carlos Soto. And though she abruptly ended things with him years ago, she knows now he’s the only man who can save her…

Black Knights, Inc. to the Rescue…

Carlos “Steady” Soto has taken part in his fair share of dangerous missions working at the covert government defense firm of Black Knights Inc. But nothing prepared him for the emotional rollercoaster he faces when he’s tasked with rescuing the only woman he ever loved—who also broke his heart. Racing against time and outmaneuvering a group of trained terrorists will take everything he’s got. Plus there’s the heat simmering between them which is threatening to ignite into an inferno. While ruthless enemies stalk them, they must learn to trust each other again. Even if they do make it out alive, will Abby turn her back on him…for the second time?

••••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: FULL THROTTLE is the seventh installment in Julie Ann Walker’s contemporary, adult Black Knights Inc romantic action/ suspense series focusing on an elite group of ex Navy SEALS, FBI, CIA and military heroes headquartered at a motorcycle shop known as Black Knights Inc. The men and women of Black Knights Inc are so far under the radar that they are blacker than Black Ops. This is Carlos ‘Steady’ Soto and Abby Thompson’s storyline- a friends to lovers trope with a slight second chance at love.

Abby Thompson is the twenty seven year old daughter of the President of the USA, a botanist and currently in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on assignment. Eight years earlier Abby’s best friend was killed in a coffee shop explosion that was intended to take out the President’s daughter. With her security detail in place, Abby believes she is well protected from any personal threats against her life. Enter Carlos Soto, her best friend’s brother and one of the men hired as part of Abby’s protection team. Within a matter of minutes, most of the Secret Service Agents will be killed and Abby will be kidnapped and held hostage in places unknown.

Told from several close third person points of view, the storyline finds Carlos going solo into the jungles of Malaysia searching for the woman that he loves. Eight years earlier, the then twenty five year old Carlos believed he was too old for Abby and now that her life has been threatened Carlos is determined to bring her home-at any cost. The relationship between Abby and Carlos is fraught with sexual tension, desire and lust. A good portion of the storyline finds Carlos is desperate need of sexual release and our couple takes the opportunity to explore one another while on the run.

FULL THROTTLE takes the reader through the sweltering jungles and underbrush of Malaysia. Our couple will encounter charging elephants, fire ants, local tribesman and frequent gunfire. No place is safe; everyone becomes suspect; and the kidnappers are never very far behind.

The secondary characters include a new team of Black Ops soldiers (or Alpha Platoon Boys) who quite possibly are the subject of future storylines or a possible spinoff series. We will be introduced to several friends and former soldiers whose job it is to protect and rescue those in need. Some of the previous storyline characters (Boss, Ozzie and Rock) play a small role in FULL THROTTLE but most of the focus is on Abby’s rescue and her relationship with Carlos-in this I missed the friendship and intimacy of the Black Knights Inc team. There is a possible romance developing between one of Abby’s Secret Service Agents Penni DePaul and Black Knights’ operative Dan ‘The Motor City Madman’. Dan’s story may be next when he volunteers to help bring in a former CIA agent who’s gone rogue.

I did have a small issue with one particular aspect of the storyline and that was the continuous use of a juvenile like figure of speech and euphemisms. When our heroine cursed she would substitute words and phrases that made no particular sense or have anything to do with their current situation-e.g. Shitpickle/Sonofabiscuit/What the Friggin Sticks. She had no issues or problems using the proper terminology during sex, but she was adverse to using graphic language when trying to make a point-whether this particular style of language was intended to add humor, I am not sure, but it was distracting in an adult storyline and I felt disconnected whenever word substitutions were used.

FULL THROTTLE is an action packed, suspense filled story about terrorism and extremists threats against the President’s family. There is intrigue, mystery and romance; secrets and anticipation; betrayal and loss. Julie Ann Walker adds another exciting storyline and sexy hero to the Black Knights Inc series with Carlos and Abby’s story.
