•••••••••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: BLOOD ASSASSIN is the second full length installment in Alexandra Ivy’s contemporary, adult, The Sentinels paranormal, romance series focusing on a rare supernatural species known as high bloods –blessed (and cursed) with powers and magical abilities. To protect the high bloods from themselves and discrimination from the outside world, the ‘freaks’ and ‘mutations’ are secluded in the domed city of Valhalla organized with a social infrastructure and hierarchy of Sentinels. This is Fane and Serra’s storyline, and can be read as a stand alone without too much difficulty. Alexandra Ivy weaves background history into the storyline and introduces the novel with an overview about the Sentinel warriors and guardians.

Fane is a Sentinel Guardian, an alpha male whose last assignment ended when the woman he protected for years fell in love with a human (Born in Blood-Sentinel #1). Hoping to return to Tibet for some meditation and reflection, Fane will be confronted by the woman of his dreams, Serra, knowing that he will never be good enough for the beautiful psychic who calls to his soul. Serra is a strong, confident woman who is in love with Fane, and takes every opportunity to ensure that Fane is wholly aware. It is only when Serra disappears does Fane realize that he will never be able to live without the woman he loves.

The storyline focuses on the hunt for a missing four year old child. Molly is the daughter of Bas-a wealthy high blood whose history is known to only a few. Bas will sacrifices everyone to ensure his daughter is safely returned and in this Serra will be Bas’s chosen sacrifice. Serra is ‘called in’ to search for the little girl but there is a price upon Serra’s head. If she is unable to locate Molly, her life will be forfeited. Enter Fane, who agrees to aid Serra in the search for the missing child knowing that both will be targeted for destruction when the girl has been found. Serra’s psychic abilities will be put to the test as she hunts, not only for Molly but for the people responsible.

The relationship between Serra and Fane is one of friends to lovers. Fane has been reluctant to reveal his true feelings to Serra but when the woman he loves risks her life for that of a four year old child, Fane wants more from Serra-he wants forever. The sex scenes are sensual and hot, although limited in number as the storyline focuses on the retrieval of a missing child and uncovering the identity of the people responsible for the attack against the supernatural powers. The world building continues to center on the stereotyping and prejudices against what is considered ‘abnormal’. The preconceived notions about the supernatural powers have resulted in the protective confines of Valhalla but there are those who are not willing to play by the rules. The Sentinels are an elite group of warriors, trained by Tibetan monks, whose job it is to protect and defend the supernatural powers against their enemies and themselves.

The secondary and supporting characters include the all-powerful and all-knowing Mave (Lana); Wolfe (the leader of The Sentinels ) and a man who is more than attracted to the Mave; and Bas whose past is dark and dangerous with too much blood on his hands.

Alexandra Ivy weaves an intricate tale of kidnapping, death, revenge, betrayal, witches, psychics, magic and love. The twists and turns throughout the story find the reader pulled from one scenario to another as well as the possibility of outlining some future storylines. There are a number of immortal and supernatural powers introduced including sexy warriors, psychics and a witch that has the ability to trigger the end of the world. There is mystery, suspense and action rolled into a romantic storyline about two people meant for one another-in this world and the next.

A Single Kiss

Amazon.com / Barnes and Noble / KOBO / The Book Depository

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date January 6, 2015

A single kiss can change everything…

In the first novel of the Sweetest Kisses series, Hannah Stark has set her sights on corporate law to assure her a career of paperwork, predictability, and conservative suits. Contracts, finance, and the art of the deal sing to her, while the mess and misery of the courtroom do not. But her daughter needs to eat, so when Hannah is offered a temporary position in a small town firm’s domestic relations department, she reluctantly accepts.

Trent Knightley is mightily drawn to his newest associate, though Hannah is as protective of her privacy as she is competent. When their friendship and attraction heat up, Hannah’s secrets put her heart and Trent’s hopes in double jeopardy.

•••••••••••••••

4.5 out of 5 for this reader folks!

Ok .. so … as many of you know Grace Burrowes is one of my absolute fave historical romance authors. When this book came to me and I learned it was contemporary I have to admit I was very hesitant (disclaimer … historical’s are preferred to contemporaries where my tastes are concerned). I know what to expect with her historical romances and I was fearful that a contemporary would taint my beloved historical writer. NOPE .. NOT AT ALL! As hesitant as I was, it did not take long for me to settle in and come to love and recognize the way Grace writes. Seriously I adore this woman!

Hannah is a single mom, lawyer, has an unfortunate past in the foster system as a child, and is looking to make a better life for her family. Although she isn’t interested in practising family law (she is hoping to go down the corporate road), she finds a job in just that .. family law. Hating that she will see other families dragged through the system in way she was, she puts on her big girl panties and decides to deal.

Trent is one of the brothers who run this firm and just so happens to be a book boyfriend I’d like to tuck away for a real crummy day. He is WONDERFUL and so ideal for Hannah. Smart, straight shooting without insult, handsome, strong, opinionated and able to back up his statements with fact, he is Hannah’s perfect guy. He is also clearly into her and although fraternization is a no no, these two really have no choice but to go “there”.

Hannah and her daughter have secrets though, and this prevents Hannah from fully letting Trent get in. I love that Grace Burrowes didn’t spill the beans right away about this past, leaving a bit of a mystery for the reader to guess at. The contemporary issues were real and completely believable adding to this story. I only knocked off 0.5 because I have given all her other books 5 (again historical is my fave) and I cannot say I loved this one as much as I do her historical’s. Maybe that isn’t fair, but it’s how I feel!

A great start to another fabo series by Grace Burrowes. I will ABSOLUTELY be reading the remainder of this series. If you love a good contemporary that touches on domestic family issues with a side of law and love, give this book a read!

HAPPY READING! 🙂

Q&A

Three Questions With Grace Burrowes

1. What challenges or difficulties (research, logistics, background) did you encounter while writing A Single Kiss?

One of the heroine’s heartaches is that she was raised in foster care, and never developed much of a support network. Hannah is trying to remain emotionally self-sufficient but so, so tempted by the respect and trust the hero offers her.
From an author’s perspective, Hannah had no sidekick, nobody to process with, and that could have meant a lot of internal reflection, if other characters weren’t drafted into temporary duty.

2. When writing the storyline, did the characters direct the writing or did you direct the characters?

I have my ideas about how things should proceed, but invariably, the characters come up with better material.

3. What three things would you like to accomplish in the next five years?

I’m not that attached to goals. I’d like to write books that people enjoy, be a loving member of the species, and not burden anybody unnecessarily.

excerpt

James stood beside Mac at the window in Mac’s office, watching the head of the domestic relations department escort his newest associate to her car.

“Why isn’t that idiot sneaking in a little kiss here and there?” James asked. “He’s not even touching her. Didn’t offer his arm, hasn’t got his hand on her
back.”

“Some of us appreciate a more subtle approach,” Mac said. “Some of us with a little discretion and tact.”

“I about sat her in my lap at lunch earlier this week. She said I was flirting my eyelashes off, and laughed at me.”

“Laughed?” By a little blue Prius, Trent handed Hannah her briefcase. “You have my condolences, James. You must be losing your touch. We depend on you to carry
the Knightley standard into the bedroom of western Maryland, but it looks as if at long last – well, one hopes it’s
long last-”

“Shut up,” James smacked Mac’s shoulder for good measure. “It’s just as long and lasting as it ever was, but Hannah Stark has been inoculated against my devastating
charms by the only thing that has ever protected a female from falling for me.”

“Common sense?” Mac drawled. “A functioning brain? A sense of humor? An accurately calibrated ruler?”

“She’s fallen for him,” James said, gesturing towards the parking lot. “We have reason to hope.”

Secrets of a Scandalous Heiress
Matchmaker Trilogy – Book #3
by Theresa Romain
Release Date: January 6, 2014

Secrets of a Scandalous HeiressAmazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / The Book Depository / BAM

Description:
ONE GOOD PROPOSITION DESERVES ANOTHER…

Heiress Augusta Meredith can’t help herself—she stirs up gossip wherever she goes. A stranger to Bath society, she pretends to be a charming young widow, until sardonic, darkly handsome Joss Everett arrives from London and uncovers her charade.

Now they’ll weave their way through the pitfalls of the polite world only if they’re willing to be true to themselves…and to each other…

Review:

Theresa Romain has written a delight historical romance in Secrets of a Scandalous Heiress. Augusta Meredith, a young heiress to Meredith Beauty has tried to be accepted in the “ton”, but her birth to parents whose wealth was the result of hard work and building a company with their own hands, would not allow her into the tight inner circle of the titled. Emotionally damaged by the sudden loss of her parents and the man who courted her and she thought loved her, she’s running from herself and not in particularly good directions.

Joss Everett, grandson of a baron, but also son of a half Indian woman is much like Augusta. Accepted on the fringes of the “ton” but not totally included. He’s the businessman for his cousin Baron Sutcliffe, even though he’s family; he’s pretty much treated as a servant. His mother died while he was a young boy and he has developed an inordinate amount of “damnedable” pride.

The two meet in the town of Bath. Augusta is accompanying her friend Lady Tallant, who was recovering from losing a daughter in childbirth. Augusta is, for her own reasons, calling herself Mrs. Flowers, and a recent widow. Joss is trying to find out information on someone blackmailing his cousin. He knows who she is and she manages to secure his help in keeping her secret.

She gives him help in finding people to talk to about the blackmail issue; he keeps her secret of not being Mrs. Flowers.

That’s the setup. I don’t do spoilers. The writing is excellent, you very much get the feel of the time and circumstances. The two are attracted, but due to the issues each has, they just can’t seem to truly connect. The descriptive writing is flawless, the secondary characters are very well done. I’m an action lover, so the pace is a bit slow for me, but it’s very much like the times it’s written about. It’s a wonderful tale of all kinds of healing and not running away from yourself. Yes, it’s a love story. Is there any other kind? LOL

It’s a lovely story and well written. I look forward to more from this author.

If you like historical romance, this is your cup of tea.

Enjoy everyone, I did.

The Debt Collector Season 1 & 2 by Susan Kaye Quinn-a review

The Debt Collector Season 1 &  2 by Susan Kaye Quinn-a review

Debt Collector Season 2

Amazon.com

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date December 15, 2014

What’s your life worth on the open market?
In this gritty urban fantasy, debt collectors take your life energy and give it to someone more “worthy”… all while paying the price with black marks on their souls.

Wraith is a shadow in the night, haunting the bedrooms of the rich “high potentials” who have stolen life energy from the desperate and dying. The justice and the sweet mercy hit that follow keep her from falling into her own personal abyss. Her secret nighttime work also keeps her on level for her real mission: carrying on her father’s legacy of attempting to bring an end to debt collection as a whole. But when a mysterious debt collector interrupts her in the act and discovers her secret, everything Wraith loves may be destroyed by the one thing she can never fix– the original sin of being a debt collector herself.

Contains mature content and themes.

•••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: 4.5 stars–THE DEBT COLLECTOR Season 2 is the second installment in Susan Kaye Quinn’s urban fantasy, dystopian Debt Collector cyber-punk series where you pay your debt with your life. This is reluctant debt collector Alexandrea ‘Wraith’ Sterling’s storyline- a story that looks at the moral, ethical and illegal complications of taking a life for the sake of beauty, youth and life ever lasting.

Originally released in serial format, THE DEBT COLLECTOR Season 2 is a storyline that looks at the potential of too much power in the hands of too few. There are emotional, psychological and moral implications of a society that takes a life for payment of a debt. In a world where the rich and powerful have all of the control, the poorest of the poor will pay with their lives in an unending cycle of debt collecting and payout and in the end everyone owes a debt to the man above.

Wraith is a reluctant debt collector whose entire life has revolved around stopping the government sanctioned debt collecting. She is the epitome of everything both she and her late father hate-someone who pulls the life energy from the people who owe a debt to someone more powerful and in control. But a man named Moloch and his band of rogue debt collectors known as the Gehenna are willing to risk everyone in order to prove that trying to control the collectors will result in the deaths of thousands.

The principle characters are colorful, energetic and not without some conscience. The evil layer of society discovered that the debt collecting is a business of which they wanted to control, and in this our heroes and heroines are caught between what they do and what they know has to be done. The world building continues to look at the illegal collection of life and payouts to those who can afford.

I read THE DEBT COLLECTOR Season 2 in a nine installment serial format. Whether you are a fan of the serial stylization or not, it is recommended that you read Season 1 before reading Season 2. There is a vast amount of information revealed in each season, leading towards the culmination of the series in Season 5.

Susan Kaye Quinn fast paced, energetic, dystopian cyber-punk world of the Debt Collector will make you think about society’s direction and just how much IS your life really worth?

THE DEBT COLLECTOR
(Vol 1-9 Season I)
by Susan Kaye Quinn

Debt Collector Season 1ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date December 2013

Amazon.com / Barnes and Noble

What’s your life worth on the open market?
A debt collector can tell you precisely.

Lirium plays the part of the grim reaper well, with his dark trenchcoat, jackboots, and the black marks on his soul that every debt collector carries. He’s just in it for his cut, the ten percent of the life energy he collects before he transfers it on to the high potentials, the people who will make the world a better place with their brains, their work, and their lives. That hit of life energy, a bottle of vodka, and a visit from one of Madam Anastazja’s sex workers keep him alive, stable, and mostly sane… until he collects again. But when his recovery ritual is disrupted by a sex worker who isn’t what she seems, he has to choose between doing an illegal hit for a girl whose story has more holes than his soul or facing the bottle alone–a dark pit he’s not sure he’ll be able to climb out of again.

The Debt Collector serial is a dark and gritty future-noir about a world where your life-worth is tabulated on the open market and going in debt risks a lot more than your credit rating. What’s a serial? It’s a sequence of stories, like a TV series, where each episode is connected to a larger story arc. Each episode is 11-15k (40-60 pages) in length, and each collection of three episodes is the length of a short novel. There will be nine episodes in the first season.

•••••••••••••

REVIEW: THE DEBT COLLECTOR Season 1 is the first Season in Susan Kaye Quinn’s urban fantasy/sci-fi / cyber punk series focusing on a world where your debt is paid with your life. A Debt Collector is one who has the ability to remove the remaining life force from those about to pass on and transfer the energy to others -but- with death comes responsibilities and there are those who use their abilities for illegal and financial gains. Told from first person POV (Lirium) this is the story of Debt Collector Delirium (Lirium) Joe Miller.

Originally released as a nine part serial series, Season I focuses on a few weeks in the life of Lirium Miller-a Debt Collector with a conscience-one whose guilt will eat away at what is left of his soul. The deeper Lirium falls into the program the more he discovers that not everything and every assignment are ethically or morally true. Our hero will discover that the people assigned to ensure his mental and physical safety are the same people who will betray Lirium when he needs them the most.

THE DEBT COLLECTOR Season I takes the reader into a futuristic world where the human value is worth only as much as the debt that is owed and that debt must be paid with what remains of one’s life. This is a story that looks at the ethical side of the end of life; the termination of life forces; and the big business of medicine, government and life ever lasting. For those without the ability to pay for their medical care, a Debt Collector will take what remains of their life and give it to someone with the potential to do better.

Susan Kaye Quinn pulls the reader into an imaginative tale where medical ethics and human morals are at war with one another. When humanity has reached a point where one’s debt must be paid with one’s life, who becomes the winner in a game of the haves and the have-nots?

Hungry Like the Wolf – by Paige Tyler – a Review and Spotlight Tour

Hungry Like the WolfAmazon / Barnes & Noble / The Book Depository

Description:
INTRODUCING SWAT: SPECIAL WOLF ALPHA TEAM

They’re tight

They’re on target

They’re as alpha as men can get.

The Dallas SWAT team is hiding one helluva secret . . . they’re a pack of wolf shifters.

The team of elite sharpshooters is ultra-secretive—and also the darlings of Dallas. This doesn’t sit well with investigative journalist Mackenzie Stone. They must be hiding something . . . and she’s determined to find out what.

Keeping Mac at a distance proves impossible for SWAT team commander Gage Dixon. She’s smart, sexy, and makes him feel alive for the first time in years. But she’s getting dangerously close to the truth—and perilously close to his heart…

Review:

Hungry Like the Wolf by Paige Tyler is the 1st book in her new SWAT series. SWAT stands for Special Wolf Alpha Team. Lucky for us, these men are most definitely Alphas, and very hot. Gage Dixon is the SWAT team leader and our hero, and the first of what promises to be a fun time with quite a few hot men, who will be getting their own stories told.

Mac is our heroine, and an investigative reporter, who is determined to find out the truth behind the Dallas SWAT team, who are so perfect. They are strong, bigger, and faster than normal cops, but no one knows that underneath it all, they are werewolves. Each was picked by Gage to become part of this SWAT team to help fight the bad guys.

After getting a tip that something is not right, Mac suspects perhaps they are using enhancement drugs. Mac sets out to find out, and comes face to face with Gage, during a daring rescue attempt. He moves her to their truck, as she was getting herself into danger too close to the scene. It doesn’t take long for both of them to feel the heat, which was not from the fire at the site.

Gage convinces his team to allow Mac to hang around for a few days at their compound, in order for her to learn what he wants her to know. The men are not happy about this, but they go along with their leader, as wolves, they can sense the attraction between Gage and Mac. Is Mac the ONE for Gage?

What follows is not only a romance that slowly begins to sizzle, as their chemistry is off the wall, but an exciting story that threatens those on the team and Mac. The focus of the story is a well connected villain, who blames Gage for the death of his bad son. Gage must try to be a step ahead to stop this villain; keeping his team and Mac safe; and try to control his growing feelings for Mac. When a situation gets out of hand, Mac will learn the truth about Gage & his team. What will she do? Write her story that would be a major scoop, but destroy Gage and his team in the process?   You need to read this book to find out.

This was a fun, exciting and hot story by Paige Tyler. I look forward to reading more about these hot men of the SWAT team, as they all get their chance.

Excerpt

“We dropped Corporal Riggs off a few blocks out from the scene. He hoofed it
in over the rooftops while we were getting into position outside. He went in
and set up the remote cameras and microphones while everyone inside was
focused on us and the other police officers.”

Riggs and Taylor stared at their commander, clearly shocked by how open he’d
been about their tactics to a member of the media. Mac was stunned, too.
She’d been fishing when she’d asked the question. She hadn’t expected them
to actually answer her.

Dixon chuckled. “You don’t have to look so alarmed. It’s not like I shared
state secrets. Besides, Ms. Stone will be coming by the compound later today
to take a look around and see how we operate.”

Mac did a double take. “Seriously?”

His amber eyes met hers. “That’s what you wanted, isn’t it? An in-depth look
at a day in the life of a SWAT officer?”

She was more interested in finding out if they were hiding something, but
she didn’t tell him that.

“I figured if I didn’t make the offer, you’d only hang around outside the
compound for months until I agreed to let you in. Or until you tried to
sneak into the middle of the next hostage situation,” he said. “This way we
can do our job without worrying about you popping up out of nowhere, and you
get to do yours without risking your life.” She opened her mouth to thank
him, but he held up a finger. “There’s one condition, though.”

“Name it.”

“You agree not to detail any of our tactical procedures or techniques like
the one I just told you about. You print those and you’ll get my team
killed.” He lifted a brow. “Do we have an agreement?”

Mac nodded eagerly. “Yes.”

She’d agree to whatever he wanted if it got her in the compound-even if it
meant going back on her word later. Although, after today, she wasn’t sure
there was a story. She seriously doubted these guys were doing drugs,
regardless of what Marvin said. But that didn’t matter. No way was she
passing up an opportunity like this.

“I’ll see you at the compound this afternoon then,” Dixon said as he opened
the door for her. “Say three o’clock?”

She smiled up at him. “I’ll be there.”

Mac had to resist the urge to do a little happy dance as she hurried back to
the news van. She wasn’t sure how it had happened, but somehow she’d gotten
herself an engraved invitation to get up close and personal with the
country’s most elite tactical unit-the Dallas PD SWAT.
