Innocent…or guilty?

The cops think that Julianna Smith is a murderer. No one will listen when Julianna claims she’s innocent, and as the suspicions mount against her, only Julianna knows the truth…a killer is hunting her. Somewhere in the darkness, a stalker is closing in and preparing to deliver a final justice that she can’t escape.

He’s her only option.

Devlin Shade isn’t a man who trusts easily, and when Julianna Smith walks into VJS Protection, he’s well aware of her reputation—the sexy blond could be a cold-blooded murderer. Only when he looks at her, cold is the last thing that Devlin feels. There’s an instant attraction between them—hot, fierce, primal. And he agrees to take her case. He’ll be her bodyguard. He’ll keep her safe from the enemy hunting her, and he’ll also find out the truth about the mysterious Julianna. If she is a killer, he’ll turn her over to the cops himself.

She can’t let him get too close…

Julianna knows that she is walking a dangerous line with Devlin. She never expected to want him so much, and as they grow closer, she realizes that he’s working to uncover her secrets. But the secrets that she carries are worth killing for…and she can’t let anyone discover the truth, not even Devlin.

Killer or victim…

Soon the thin line between right and wrong is blurred. For Devlin, the case becomes personal, and all that matters is Julianna—keeping her safe and stopping the stalker who is on her trail. As he slides deeper into Julianna’s dangerous world, Devlin’s own darkness rises up. He’s played the good guy for so long, but now his mask is falling away. He isn’t controlled, he isn’t safe, and when Julianna is threatened, he will cross any line to keep her safe.

REVIEW: NEED ME is the third installment in Cynthia Eden’s adult, contemporary Dark Obsession romance suspense series focusing on three friends who run VJS Protection. This is tech expert Devlin Shade and Julianna Smith’s storyline. NEED ME can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty.

Told from third person point of view the focus of the storyline is protecting Julianna Smith. She is the prime suspect in her husband’s murder; all clues point towards Julianna’s guilt; but Julianna remembers nothing about the night her husband died. With numerous threats and attempts on her life, Julianna is in need of a bodyguard and protection. Enter Devlin Shade, the ‘S’ in VJS Protection and the man who isn’t so sure Julianna is free of guilt.

The relationship between Julianna and Devlin begins when Devlin names himself Julianna’s protector. VJS Protection was recommended to Julianna for their high end protection and anonymity, as well their ability to get the job done but the more Devlin begins to dig into Julianna’s story, the more holes and lies continue to emerge. If Julianna didn’t kill her husband, why are there so many people trying to end her life? Julianna and Devlin’s attraction to one another is immediate and intense; a case of insta love/insta lust that does not go unnoticed by the people in charge. The $ex scenes are impulsive, hot and steamy.

Julianna is a woman possessed to prove her innocence but is she truly innocent of the crime she has been accused of committing? At every opportunity Julianna refuses to expose the people she loves to possibility of danger but in doing so, she lies by omission and bending the truth; and runs at every opportunity placing herself and Devlin in danger. Devlin is unable to put his complete trust in the woman he has been hired to protect with his life. Some of Julianna’s actions are difficult to accept and understand.

The secondary characters include a brief appearance by Devlin’s business partners Chance and Lex, as well as Detective Faith Chestang and Ethan Barclay-all of whom we met in the previous storylines and installments. WE are also introduced to Julianna’s sister Carly-a woman both Ethan and Julianna are trying desperately to protect; and of course the requisite evil-who may or may not be someone Julianna knows.

NEED ME is a quick read; a fast paced and suspense filled storyline with twists, turns, and accusations all directed at destroying Julianna’s life. Cynthia Eden builds the storyline momentum with action, tension and doubt proving that a true detective should never stop looking for every possible clue. There are moments of drama and suspense; passion and romance; anguish and the destructive nature of jealousy and greed. Cynthia Eden pulls you into a roller coaster of ..did she or didn’t she?

Reeling from the sudden loss of her sister, Haddie Montgomery has sworn off relationships. All she wanted from Beckett Daniels was a sexy distraction to help her escape her pain for just a little while. There weren’t supposed to be any strings attached—so why can’t she shake the memory of that unforgettable night from her thoughts? Or the taste of his kiss from her lips?

No matter how hard Haddie tries to forget about him, Becks relentlessly tries to prove that she should start living for today. But she is determined to avoid romantic commitment, and she can always use her ex-boyfriend’s reappearance to help snuff out the slow burn within her that Becks has sparked….

Or will fate force her to realize that this kind of connection doesn’t come along very often and a chance at love is worth the risk?

••••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: SLOW BURN is the fifth installment in K.Bromberg’s adult, contemporary DRIVEN erotic romance series. This is Colton Donavan’s best friend Beckett Daniels and Rylee Thomas-Donovan’s BFF Haddie Montgomery’s storyline.

Told from alternating first person points of view (Haddie and Beckett) the storyline focuses on the building relationship between Haddie and Beckett, and Haddie’s need to push away the people that she loves. Haddie and Beckett were first introduced to the reader and to one another in K.Bromberg’s DRIVEN series about billionaire race car driver Colton Donavan and the love of his life Rylee Thomas.

Haddie continues to struggle with the death of her sister, and in this the entire storyline takes off in a different direction. Grief, fear of the unknown, and an uneasy feeling about the future find Haddie battling her feelings for Beckett- the man to whom she made no promises for the future-no strings attached. The ‘no strings’ attached scenario comes up time and again throughout the story-she may have said no strings but Beckett sees a chain around his heart, directly connected to the woman that he loves.

There is plenty of push and pull in this emotional storyline where Haddie’s decisions come across as selfish and uncaring at times but she struggles with the aftermath of her sister’s death, the upheaval upon everyone’s lives, and an unknown future for herself. Sometimes we all have to take a step back and look at the bigger picture; looking into the mirror does not reveal the entire story. Haddie wants to set out on her journey alone hoping to protect everyone that she loves-in the end, going it alone, is the worse possible decision she could make.

K. Bromberg invites the reader into Haddie’s personal and emotional journey. There are moments of fear and sorrow; grief and letting go; romance and love. SLOW BURN looks at a different kind of romantic storyline struggle; a struggle many families face on a daily basis but one that is more personal than most.

To be honest, this is a difficult review to write. I have to avoid spoilers and by avoiding the focus of the storyline, I have to omit the biggest plot point of the novel. There is no getting around it; I have to be vague or vaguer than normal 😉 But, I do know that by the time all of the reviews have been posted to the various sites, the secrets will have been revealed.

excerpt

He chuckles low and even, a sarcastic amusement woven through the sound that pisses me off. “What are you afraid of? Why is his offer so much more tempting than mine, huh? Oh, I know why,” he says, sarcasm dripping from his words. “He’ll walk away without any questions. But I won’t will I, Haddie? I have plenty of questions. The first one being what exactly are you running from?”
My eyes flash up to meet his, and the look – the moment that passes between us – is too honest, too raw. I have to break it. I can’t let him see the truths that even I’m trying to hide from. How I feel and what I need to fix me – the answer being him – because I’m not going to allow it to happen.
I can feel it. I can know it. But he can’t.
My mind flashes back momentarily to the night of the wedding. Of how I asked him – gave him no other option really –to take me to bed. Did I know then that unzipping my dress for him and inviting him between my legs would lead to this? Me wanting so much more? Me standing in the middle of his apartment wanting to ask for more but unable to because of the fears that are holding me hostage?

One month…that’s all I need him for. All I have to do is stay out of his bed.

It’s too late to decline.

••••••••••••••

REVIEW: AN INDECENT PROPOSAL : The Interview is the first installment in JC Reed and Jackie Steele’s adult, contemporary Indecent Proposal erotic, romantic suspense series focusing on twenty two year old Lauren Hanson and Chase Wright.

The focus is on Lauren’s need for a ‘fiance’. According to her mother’s will, in order to gain access to a set of letters her mother bequeathed upon her death, Laurie must be in a committed relationship before her twenty third birthday. Enter-handsome and mysterious actor Chase Wright-who easily accepts all of the conditions set out by Miss Hanson. What ensues is a game where Laurie becomes a pawn in a messy financial deal where her step father controls all of the moves.

The relationship between Laurie and Chase begins as a professional agreement but Chase wants something more. Laurie wants their arrangement to remain purely professional, including no intimate contact and no plans for the future but Chase pushes for something more permanent. There is something about Chase that doesn’t add up. Things go from bad to worse when her step father’s lawyer ups the stakes and Laurie’s future begins to unfold.

The secondary and supporting characters include Laurie’s best friend Jude; her stepfather Clint and his new fiancé; as well as Clint’s lawyer who may or may not have Laurie’s side.

The storyline ventures into a romantic suspense when Laurie reveals the truth about her past; her mother’s death and the man who has raised Laurie since her early years. Chase insists on helping Laurie uncover the truth but the truth is something Laurie is afraid to know.

JC Reed and Jackie Steele begin to unravel layers of mysterious happenings and secret whispers. There are moments of what ifs and whys, countered by a determined couple who want the truth but a truth that may cost Laurie for more than she had bargained. AS per JC’s previous series and novels, there is always something darker and more dangerous lurking just below the surface, and in this, the darkness is starting to bleed onto the pages of THE INDECENT PROPOSAL.

Cursed by Fire (Immortal Brothers 1) by Jacquelyn Frank-a review

CURSED BY FIRE (Immortal Brothers 1) by Jacquelyn Frank-a review

Cursed by Fire

Amazon.com / Barnes and Noble / KOBO / The Book Depository

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date: February 24, 2015

For centuries, Dethan has been trapped in a fiery inferno for defying the gods and snatching the power of immortality. Condemned to have his battle-hardened body licked by flames only to regenerate and be consumed all over again, Dethan has lost all hope—until the Goddess of Conflict appears. She will release him from torment—if he’ll use his power and strength as a warrior to raise an army and defeat a fierce enemy faction of gods.

Free to live as a man once again, Dethan meets Selinda—heir to the throne of Hexis—and his thoughts quickly turn from the conquest of cities to the conquest of this headstrong beauty. Betrothed to a cruel, calculating powermonger, Selinda needs a champion, and so Dethan enters into another bargain: If she will share her bed—and her body—with him, Dethan will save her city from destructive forces within and without. As the lovers ignite a searing passion, Dethan will risk all—even the wrath of the Goddess of Conflict—for a chance to make Selinda his forever.

••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: CURSED BY FIRE is the first installment in Jacquelyn Frank’s adult, Immortal Brothers fantasy series focusing on four brothers who defied the gods and goddesses in the search for immortality. This is eldest brother Dethan, and heir to the throne of Hexis-Selinda’s storyline.

Two hundred years earlier, Dethan and his three brothers went in search of the mythological waters that, if drunk, would imbue immortality. The gods were angered, and cursed the four brothers to suffer for all eternity for stealing from the gods. Dethan, the eldest, was sentenced to burn in hellfire over and over. When Weysa, the goddess of conflict, demands obedience from the former warlord Dethan, he is commanded to rise up an army and defeat an enemy of the gods. If he fails, he will be set afire, once again, for all eternity. Dethan is a man who is very sure of himself, his abilities and his power; he is determined to free himself of the endless nightmare that has become his life.

The storyline follows Dethan as he enters the city of Hexis, a mortal city, where the scarred but beautiful Selinda catches his eye. As the heir to the throne, Selinda has been promised to an abusive man who hides his true intent from the current ruler; he has set his sights on the crown. With the city on the cusp of war, Dethan offers up his experience as a general in return for Selinda’s hand in marriage and a vast amount of gold. What ensues is a city’s preparations for war, and Selinda’s relationship with Dethan threatening her family and any future happiness when the man to whom she was promised is determined to destroy everyone who stands in his way.

The storyline and thusly the relationship between our leading couple is slow to build. Their attraction to one another is immediate but the connection lacked any excitement or palpable energy. The early promise of sexual allure and enchantment never quite reached a breathtaking level.

There is a vast amount of detail imparted to the reader as the author puts her own spin on the world of mythological gods and goddesses, fantastical names, retribution and magic. There is no specific connection (that I am able to discern) to any real or historical lore and folk tales; the series is an imagined fantasy world by Jacquelyn Frank.

The secondary and supporting players are a mix of peons, slaves, soldiers and sometimes over the top characterizations of evil. Our heroine Selinda is a woman weakened by the knowledge that her father is but a puppet to his number one man; her self-esteem is low; and her self image reflects the emotional and verbal attack against her character. There are moments of physical, emotional and verbal abuse directed at both Selinda and her father, yet neither one breaks character to stop what is happening.

Jacquelyn Frank’s introduction to the Immortal Brothers series is well written with descriptive narration and colorful text yet some detail and information seems to be lacking about the world of which we have entered. Frank’s mythological gods and goddesses are an evil culmination of powerful beings that demand obedience and worship. There are moments of betrayal, revenge, hope and love combined with an impending war on the horizon. Dethan must prove himself worthy lest he suffer eternal damnation burning in Hell.

Review:

The Girls of Mischief Bay by Susan Mallery is the 1st book in her new Mischief Bay series. This is a contemporary women’s fiction storyline. The Girls of Mischief Bay tells the story of three friends who live in Mischief Bay, Southern California. We meet our heroines from the start; Pam, is the oldest at 50, and she is happily married, with grown up children. Shannon is a single successful business women, who is close to reaching 40. Nicole is the youngest at around 30, with a young son, and a husband who doesn’t work, so that he can live his dreams. Throughout this story, we learn more about each of them, the differences in their lives, and watch as they all have issues that come up. But most of all, we get to see a wonderful friendship between three women, who will be there for each other.

Nicole has troubles making ends meet, taking care of her son Tyler, and working on her small business. Her husband Eric quit his job, and is working on his dream, writing a screenplay. Nicole can’t talk to Eric, as he is out all day, doesn’t help with chores, or even pay attention to either her or Tyler.

Pam begins to be self-conscious as she reaches 50, and decides to get Botox to make her look and feel better. She also convinces her husband to take a short vacation at a spa, which turns out to be a sexual retreat, which does spice up their love life.

Shannon has only been interested in her career, and had no intention of settling down. But now that she is near 40, Shannon has second thoughts, especially after she meets Adam, a widower with two young children.

As we follow the ladies, each will have the rug pulled out from under them. Nicole’s husband will surprisingly succeed, and their money situation will change. However, now that his dreams are coming true, Nicole will discover that her marriage is worse off than it was before.

A tragedy changes Pam, and her life will never be the same. Will she be able to handle it?

Shannon becomes serious with Adam, and they both want a permanent relationship, but something comes up that may cause Shannon to change her mind.

This really was a sweet story that has a bit of everything, such as romance, tragedy, humor, fun, sadness, family, cute dog, and a friendship that will persevere. Susan Mallory has taken us on a wonderful journey of life’s trials and tribulations, and the friendships that will hold the pieces together. The Girls of Mischief Bay is a wonderful start to a new series by Susan Mallery.

The Ruby Circle (Bloodlines #6) by Richelle Mead-a review

The Ruby Circle (Bloodlines #6) by Richelle Mead-a review

The Ruby Circle Feb 15

Amazon.com / Barnes and Noble / KOBO / The Book Depository

ABOUT THE BOOK: February 10, 2015

Sydney Sage is an Alchemist, one of a group of humans who dabble in magic and serve to bridge the worlds of humans and vampires. They protect vampire secrets—and human lives.

After their secret romance is exposed, Sydney and Adrian find themselves facing the wrath of both the Alchemists and the Moroi in this electrifying conclusion to Richelle Mead’s New York Times bestselling Bloodlines series. When the life of someone they both love is put on the line, Sydney risks everything to hunt down a deadly former nemesis. Meanwhile, Adrian becomes enmeshed in a puzzle that could hold the key to a shocking secret about spirit magic, a secret that could shake the entire Moroi world.

•••••••••••••••••

Review:
I feel like I have just gotten off the rollercoaster that is THE RUBY CIRCLE by Richelle Mead and I am still feeling exhilarated, a tad lightheaded and wondering, did I get off before it came to a complete stop? This novel is the conclusion of The Bloodline Series that brought “Sydrian” together. That is Adrian, our lighthearted Moroi vampire and Sydney, our serious Alchemist. These are two races that were never meant to be together, but there is no stopping true love!

Sometimes staying together is tougher than getting together! Sydney and Adrian find themselves living with his mother in a guest suite at the Moroi Court. It isn’t very romantic and real life is difficult, but soon the adventures begin. Sydney breaks out of Court with the help of Ms. Terwilliger, our favorite teacher slash witch! There was a clue left for Sydney that may help them find the kidnapped Jill. There is a lot of action in this novel and our couple is pulled in so many different directions. They are following the clues to Jill’s location, discovering who is behind the kidnapping and solving the mystery of what happened to Olive! This is Nina’s sister who fell in love with Neil and disappeared. We need a chart of all characters, because they all make an appearance in this novel! At times the action seemed manic, there were so many detours. All former characters, including “dead ones”, make cameo appearances and that added to the many side plots!

Adrian must come to terms with his Spirit use and how it is affecting his mental health. Nina used too much Spirit and she suffered the consequences! Sydney is surrounded by her adopted Coven and the magical aspects were a fascinating part of the storyline. I think I needed more witch time, but all of the characters were pushing for story time. During one part, a baby joins their group and the secrets about his parentage must be kept a secret from everyone! His genetics might literally be the salvation for the Moroi race.

The novel has two conclusions. The race to find our kidnapped Princess is exciting with Sydney battling a Demon! Sydney has a chance to make amends with The Alchemists through the use of blackmail, that’s the genius Sydney I know! Sydrian wants a chance to live a happy life without constantly looking over their shoulder. The epilogue is another story. I found it a tad disappointing! The story building was stellar and then, it fell flat. Loose ends were not resolved, leading me to believe that Ms. Mead wants to revisit this world with another spin off. It’s not a bad HEA, but it was too safe. That led to the feeling of, that’s it?!? I think readers will still love this novel, just hang on and enjoy the ride!

Blushing by Katie Delahanty – a Review

Blushing by Katie Delahanty – a Review

BlushingAmazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / BAM

Description:
Berkeley Dalton is my sexy-as-hell rock star boyfriend, and he just proposed to me—only I can’t tell anyone about it. He’s starring in a new movie with his (obviously gorgeous) ex-girlfriend, and the two are expected to “reunite” for the public. Which means no one can know his heart is still with me.

As filming gets under way, Berkeley and I are forced to lie, sneak around, and lie some more to protect our secret engagement. To make matters worse, someone is trying really hard to break us up. And while I love Berkeley, I’m starting to wonder exactly who he is…and who I am. If I can’t survive the red carpet, how the hell will I make it down the aisle?

Review:

Blushing by Katie Delahanty is the 2nd book in her The Brightside series, but it can be read as a standalone.  Oh this book was a lot of fun to read.

Berkeley is a pop star/film star, and has just gotten engaged to the woman he loves, but the movie will make him a global star, and to add insult to his poor fiancé, his ex girlfriend is to be in the movie, and everyone is expecting them to reunite.

The scrapes that they get into, trying to sneak quality time with each other, was funny.

But his fiancé is beginning to doubt that he really does love her, and she gets a sneaky suspicion that someone is trying to break them up. Could it be the ex, the promoter, or a crazy fan ?

The fiancé isn’t really keen on the limelight. And starts to worry that she won’t be able to cope, once their engagement is made public.  I loved the interaction between all the characters. The doubts plaguing her mind were all genuinely felt. And I did feel for her.

It was a fun read, I sat with my kindle and devoured it in an afternoon.
