The Master (The Game Maker #2) by Kresley Cole-a review

The Master (The Game Maker #2) by Kresley Cole-a review

The Master

Amazon.com / Barnes and Noble / KOBO / The Book Depository

About the book: Release Date: February 17, 2015

Everyone fears the Master…

Rich, irresistible politician/Mafiya boss Maksimilian Sevastyan prefers tall, obedient blondes to fulfill his…complicated desires. That is, until the icy Russian encounters a disobedient brunette whose exquisite little body threatens his legendary restraint.

Except her.

Catarina Marín was a well-off young wife until her world fell apart. Now she’s hiding out, forced to start working as an escort in Miami. Her very first client is beyond gorgeous, but when he tells her what he plans to do to her, Cat almost walks out of the door.

If pleasure is a game, play to win.

After their mind-blowing encounter burns out of control, the lovers crave more. If they escape the deadly threats surrounding them, can Maksim overcome his past—to offer Cat his future? Only then will she tempt him with what he really wants: her, all tied up with a bow.

•••••••••••••••

The Master begins with Catarina, “Cat”, filling in for a friend of hers who just happens to be a high priced escort. When she arrives at his hotel, she almost chickens out, but after talking to her friend and finding out just how much she can make in one night, she squares her shoulders and rings the doorbell. After all, being on the run and not staying in one place for too long costs money. Money she is almost out of. Once the door opens and she sees who stands behind it, she is sure that she’ll at least enjoy her short time with the drop dead gorgeous man standing before her.

However, once she enters, to say that things don’t go as either of them planned is an understatement. He’d ordered a tall blonde. She was a little Latina. He expects her to be utterly submissive to what he wants, which almost sends her running. But, for some reason, she thinks there is more to this mysterious Russian than meets the eye. And, once their first encounter gets rolling, things get steamy. Fast. Surprising to both of them is the amount enjoyment had by all. After all, he’s the one in charge, right? I think Cat missed that memo as she decides to up the ante and prove who is the real master….

I.LOVED.THIS.BOOK. Is there instant attraction? Yes. Is there hot, steamy and erotic interludes? Yes, and LOTS of it. Are they both hiding things about themselves, afraid to open up to anyone? Absolutely. And, although her story will make you angry and have you rooting for her, his story will make you weep. A lot. When you find out what he and his two brothers have endured…. Geez……

You will absolutely fall in love with both characters and the ending will have you turning the pages so fast, you’ll be breathless. I really liked the first book in this series, The Professional, but I’ll say it again. I absolutely L.O.V.E.D. this book. I read it in just a few hours, because I wasn’t able to put it down. I am so looking forward to the next book, which I’m assuming will be about the third brother. And, I’ve already got my bulk order placed for tissues. What he endured will put the first two to shame, and it seems to me he is past redemption. But, this is Kresley Cole after all, and she has never disappointed me. Well done, Kresley Cole. Very, very, very well done!

ONE lucky commenter will WIN a SIGNED, first edition PAPER COPY of VAMPIRE VACATION by CJ Ellisson

CJ Ellisson Banner

TRC: HI CJ and welcome back to The Reading Cafe.

Congratulations on the upcoming release of BLOOD LEGACY the fourth installment in the V.V. Inn series.

For those who do not know about Vivian (Dria) and the V.V. Inn series, would you please tell us something about the background of the series and your leading heroine?

CJ: Vivian is 580 year old vampire married to Rafe, her human husband. She’s had many lives in five centuries, and at the start of this series, she’s running a supernatural inn with Rafe. She uses her gifts to entertain and amuse the guests, often playing matchmaker, all without their knowledge, of course. Vivian is a rare breed of vampire who can mind-control other vampires, even to the point of projecting physical illusions.

The concept of a resort location for the undead was the original push behind creating the series. It made sense to plan the getaway in a seasonal location where darkness reigns supreme: The wilds of Alaska in the winter. Every entertainment imaginable, with plenty of willing blood donors on hand for the visiting vampires.

TRC: How has Vivian’s character changed over the series?

CJ: In the beginning she was very isolated, trusting only her husband and Jon, her vampire servant who’s also an alpha werewolf. As the series progresses, she gains new members to her vampire family and slowly begins to trust them. There are bumps along the way, a few deaths, and lots of intrigue.

Vivian may be a very powerful vampire, but over time she recognizes those relationships she’s avoided have become a source of strength and weakness at the same time. She longs to keep the people she cares about safe, and must confront the reality that she’s not as powerful, or as prepared, as she thinks.

Blood LegacyTRC: Would you please tell us something about the premise of BLOOD LEGACY?

Order Links: Amazon.com / Barnes and Noble / KOBO

CJ: We left off in BIG GAME with Vivian recovering from torture and her vampire family rallying around her for support. In this latest installment we have her re-grouping with the two most important people in her life, Rafe and Jon, to track down the vampire who escaped her husband’s wrath in the last book. Nothing is as it seems, and the three must hunt two supernatural killers in Buenos Aires while trying to uncover their prey’s location.

TRC: What challenges or difficulties (research, logistics, background, geography) did you encounter writing this particular story?

CJ: I’ve had this story and the concept brewing in my head for over two years, since BIG GAME was published. I knew what I wanted to convey in this installment, even if I didn’t have it all written down yet. The biggest challenge I encountered was starting the book before I’d fully fleshed out the outline. I was working with a group of students on their first novels for National Novel Writing Month in November 2014 while writing this book.

We spent all of October focused on planning their projects, so when I sat down to write with them on Nov 1st, I didn’t have my outline completed. Consequently, when December hit (and they all made their goal) I had to go back and re-work what I had written to make sure everything flowed well and wouldn’t require a ton of revisions later.

It turned out to be the best thing for the book. I was able to finish my outline and start sharing the book in January with my alpha readers. They read it while I finished the rest of the book. The process was exhilarating and reminded me so much why I love this series.

TRC: Your story lines, including BLOOD LEGACY, are often written from multiple points of view. How do you keep the premise flowing smoothly using many POV?

CJ: That’s where the outline comes in. I plot the entire book from alternating POVs. When I made alterations in December, I had to add chapters and change passages to fit with the timeline. The process was tedious and drove home the point to not start a book without a completed outline. Especially when you have three POVs!

The only way the tale is going to be smooth is if you have a timeline written out and now exactly where all the players are at any given time, and exactly what they are doing and does it add to the story. If it does, you either have to show it or weave the info in at an appropriate time. I didn’t set out to write a story with multiple POVs, as the first book is only from one, but when I attempted to write multiple POVs years ago, it felt right. And I’ve never regretted the decision to tell the stories this way.

TRC: How do you keep the plot unpredictable without sacrificing content and believability especially in a storyline where most of the characters are supernatural and the premise focuses on the paranormal?

CJ: I read a lot. That’s the best way to explain it. If the books are shorter, like 30-50k, I can read them in an evening or two. If they are longer, like most of my favorite urban fantasies are, they will take a few days. As an author, you will only know what’s been overdone if you read what’s popular in your genre.

That’s not to say you’ll never repeat something that’s already been done, more than likely you will, but if you read a lot, you’ll know how to put a spin or twist on your idea that may make it stand out or not feel like a carbon copy of everything else that’s out there already.

The HuntI try my best to craft a story that is unpredictable. I’ve plotted books where the ending appeared obvious while I’m writing it, meaning I led the reader there too easily, and I will re-write the ending on the fly. As an example, I plotted THE HUNT with the idea I’d add Emiko to the growing seethe, or vampire family. But as I got closer to the end, that seemed obvious. I grabbed my notes and quickly re-plotted the ending. The final result was better than the plotted original, I think.

I’d also plotted BIG GAME as Vivian escaping her tormentors, killing everyone she encountered, and rescuing everyone else. The ending with Rafe being the hero turned out much better.

TRC: When writing a storyline, do the characters direct the writing or do you direct the characters? How much influence does Vivian have on the overall series direction?

CJ: I direct the writing. If I’ve plotted something that doesn’t match with the character, I either need to add a situation where they would act as I want, introduce an element that meets the end I want, or re-write the premise. In BLOOD LEGACY I’d plotted a difficult situation for Jon, but when I was writing the book I couldn’t write the deed as I wanted. Jon’s character was too honorable to go the route I’d directed. So I came up with a viable solution. And I’m glad I did. I like the result better this way.

The characters do not talk to me in my head. What I see as I write is more of a movie playing in my head. But occasionally the players stand around and do nothing. Or I sense that the action I want to happen won’t work with the character’s sense of self. Creating is an interesting beast. Different for every author, I’m sure.

Big GameTRC: What is something that few, if any people, know about you?

CJ: Hmm…. that’s a tough one. I’m pretty open about the real me online. Okay, here’s something that happened to me recently that I think very few people know: I had a run in with an angry reader last year that started me on a downward spiral of not creating for a very long time — eight months. The longest I’ve ever not written since I became a writer.

That incident was the tip of many bad things that followed — an event and several connected projects I’d worked long hours on fell apart, and a friendship I treasured dried up and disappeared without any concrete reason. Overall, it was a very hard time.

But the bright side of things was I spent more time on my health and finally focused on all the stuff I should have been doing to get better. That extra time helped heal me. I’m in a better place now and am more careful about how close I’ll let work-relationships get to me.

TRC: On what are you currently working?

CJ: I’m working on plotting the next V V Inn book (even a few novellas), three other separate series proposals for my agent, and then plotting the last book in the Walk on the Wild Side series, VANILLA SPICE.

Walk on the Wild Side Series

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

CJ: Nope, I’m good. Thanks for the great questions. Really made me think.

TRC: Thank you CJ for taking the time to answer our questions. Congratulations on the release of BLOOD LEGACY.

CJ: Thanks for having me here today, Sandy! I wish your blog a more prosperous year than ones before, and may every book you read bring you on a journey.

Sadie must learn that it’s okay to live after loss. That picking up the pieces left behind, and moving on doesn’t mean loving Oliver any less. She is forced to ask herself, can forever, ever really be forever?

Review:

FOREVER CHANGED by Kimberley Hatch is a beautiful love story of love and loss and opening yourself up to the possibility of finding love a second time.

Sadie Ellis hadn’t planned on becoming a widow at the age of 25 and we readers feel like we are mourning with her. Oliver was the love of her life and we get to experience their wedding day and first year of marriage. Then in a sudden accident, Oliver is dead. This novel shows Sadie’s darkest times in an honest way. Sadie is helped by her best friend/brother in law Leland who is hilarious. He adds the humor in this novel and I fell in love with this character. He is mourning the sudden death of his brother too but they keep each other going. This is a realistic view of grieving, some days Sadie can’t leave her bed and then Leland shows up to drag her butt out of the bed. Their banter will leave you smiling. Sadie feels like the best part of her life is behind her when she meets her next door neighbor and his friendly German shepherd! I think she fell in love with the dog at first sight! Ben quickly becomes a part of her life with “eyes that bore into her very soul”. She is comfortable around Ben and loves their friendship and the ease she feels around him.   Sadie has some important life lessons to learn, like what you are looking for is often right in front of you!

Sadie must decide if she can love again and trust this new love. Ben is very patient with her, but he needs to be reassured at times too! The author summed it up well with this saying, “Sometimes life gives you a person that you just click with, from the moment you meet them. It’s like you’ve known them your whole life, you don’t have to pretend to be anyone or anything other than who you are. Then, sometimes, if you’re really lucky and I mean really lucky, it happens twice.” Isn’t that beautiful?

This novel was a delight to read, I thought I would need a box of Kleenex for the tears, but they were tears of joy and laughter also, and knowing that love can win out in the end. It’s a beautiful love story! I loved Sadie, Ben and Leland and I felt a connection with these marvelous characters! This is a novel that you can read in one sitting and I look forward to reading more novels by Kimberley Hatch.

The Billionaire and the Virgin (Billionaires and Bridesmaids 1) by Jessica Clare-a review

THE BILLIONAIRE AND THE VIRGIN (Billionaires and Bridesmaids 1) by Jessica Clare-a review

The Billionaire and the virgin

Amazon.com / Barnes and Noble / KOBO /

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date February 17, 2015

Waitress Marjorie Ivarsson is the picture of naiveté. Raised by her grandmother, she’d rather go to bingo than go dancing. But when she’s asked to be a bridesmaid in her friend Bronte’s destination wedding, she finds herself venturing into new and exciting territory. The wedding is set on the billionaire groom’s private island and Marjorie is fascinated by all the new people she’s meeting.

Most fascinating of all is the man she saves from almost drowning in the blue waters of the island lagoon. She might even have a bit of a crush on him. Unfortunately, she’s not the only girl who finds him so intriguing. Hot shot television producer Robert Cannon has a reputation for womanizing, drinking, and partying to excess. They couldn’t be more wrong for each other…so why are they constantly drawn together like magnets?

•••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: THE BILLIONAIRE AND THE VIRGIN is the first installment in Jessica Clare’s new contemporary, adult Billionaires and Bridesmaids erotic, romance series-a spin off from her best selling Billionaire Boys Club series-that will focus on the upcoming nuptials of the Billionaire Boys and the women that they love. This is billionaire entrepreneur Robert Cannon and waitress Marjorie Ivarsson’s storyline. You do not have to have read the Billionaire Boys Club series to understand the premise but the new series focuses on the weddings of the couples we met in Jessica’s original series, and the introduction of new billionaires and friends.

Told from third person point of view the storyline follows Marjorie as she is tasked with being a bridesmaid at her former co-worker’s wedding-Bronte Dawson and Logan Hawkings (Stranded with a Billionaire #1) destination wedding. Marjorie is a 6’1” twenty four year old naïve (almost cloistered) virgin who was raised by her elderly grandparents following the death of her parents. Marjorie has spent most of her life surrounded by senior citizens and is at her most comfortable socializing with the silver-haired seniors-in this she is socially inadequate, inept and awkward with people her own age and men. Marjorie’s low self esteem and poor self image is a by-product of her height and the resulting negative comments throughout her life. Rescuing a near drowning Robert Cannon finds our heroine lost in a strange world where Robert’s vulgarity and crude language are matched by the size of his wallet and their attraction to one another.

Robert Cannon is a self made billionaire, a television producer who made his money through the virtual world of trashy television and The Men’s Channel. He is a man whose language is blue, and his reputation with the women precedes his introduction. But Marjorie is oblivious to Robert’s history, his business, his money and his connection to Logan Hawkings. Robert is stalking Logan in the hopes of negotiating a television deal.

The relationship between Robert and Marjorie is one of immediate attraction but Marjorie’s over the top naivete and Robert’s crude and vulgar personality are distractions to the overall enjoyment of the storyline and likeability of the couple. Their first couple of dates are a disaster, uncomfortable and would have sent most people packing. But Robert persists in his pursuit of Marjorie until the truth about how he makes his money and his connection to Logan is revealed. Marjorie will return home heartbroken and lost. The sex scenes are intimate, exploratory and at times, awkward due to the heroine’s lack of experience.

All of the previous storyline series’ heroines are present but their significant others (excluding Logan) are more or less absent or silent. The bridesmaids are ever present and offering advice about dating, relationships and sex.

There comes a time when too many reminders and the redundancy of some of the plot points make it difficult to enjoy a story. We are constantly reminded about Marjorie’s lack of experience and her height; and Robert’s overuse of cuss words and swearing became a bit too much especially in a romance storyline.

I love Jessica’s BILLIONAIRE BOYS CLUB series-her heroes and heroines, their stories and their love but something was missing from THE BILLIONAIRE AND THE VIRGIN-there was no spark, no palpable energy, no real connection and very little sympathy for our hero. In fact, the writing did not ‘feel’ like Jessica Clare but more like someone else. It wasn’t until Robert’s return to civilization did the story take on a completely different feel.

If you are a fan of Jessica’s BILLIONAIRE BOYS CLUB I would still recommend giving the new series a try. I am hoping my disappointment in this storyline is a fluke and the next installment will pull me back into the fold.

Quarterback Draw by Jaci Burton – Review & Giveaway

Quarterback Draw by Jaci Burton – Review & Giveaway

Quarterback Draw Banner

QuarterbackDraw FEb 15jpgAmazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / The Book Depository / BAM

Description:
Playing For Keeps

Grant Cassidy knows how to be a football star—flash that dazzling smile, throw the winning pass, get the girl. But while the hot quarterback loves the game and the lifestyle, no woman has come close to catching his heart.  Then he matches wits with a smart, gorgeous model, and Grant finds himself wanting more than a fling.

Supermodel Katrina Koslova might live in a world of glitz and camera flashes, but she works hard to provide for the family that relies on her. She doesn’t have time for fun—much less a boyfriend—but Grant seems determined to be the exception to Katrina’s rule. Their explosive chemistry is undeniable, but Katrina’s afraid to let go and rely on anyone but herself. Grant intends to ease her fears and prove he’s a man of style and substance.

Review:

Quarterback Draw is book 9 in Jaci Burton’s Play by Play series and I can only say this series just keeps getting better and better. Jaci never ceases to amaze me with her ability to write a sports themed story complete with a hot romance between her main couple. This time up its pro football player Grant Cassidy and supermodel Katrina Koslova. All I can say is these two steamed up the pages from their first meeting. The chemistry between Grant and Katrina is off the charts and gets hotter and hotter as their relationship progresses. I absolutely loved the relationship between Grant and Katrina, they are two well balanced characters who couldn’t be more perfect for one another. Another plus in Jaci’s column is her ability to write the perfect match in her hero and heroine. Somehow they always seem to balance each other out and make each other’s lives better for it. Even though their chemistry is combustible and off the charts, Jaci doesn’t rush a thing between them. Another thing I enjoy about Jaci’s stories, she never rushes the romance, she lets it build and simmer until the perfect moment in the story and then it’s no holds bared between our couple. The romance takes off and there’s no turning back, which is how it plays out between Grant and Katrina.

One of the things I liked most about this relationship is Grant’s patience, tenderness and romancing of Katrina. Even though she’s a world class supermodel, she’s had a tough go of life, having to raise her brother and sister from when she was 18. Which meant she pretty much put her social life on hold to make sure her siblings had a good chance at life. When Grant learns she’s a virgin, he doesn’t question her reasons, instead he listens to all she has to say, understands her and decides to be the best damn teacher when it comes to sex. Let me just say, I’d let him be my teacher any day 😉 Grant definitely knows what he’s doing in the bedroom, along with being a kickass quarterback for his pro football team. Watching Grant and Katrina’s relationship develop slowly and passionately was a lovely treat to read. Jaci does a fantastic job of allowing Katrina to spread her wings in the romance department, while at the same time being a little apprehensive because she’s always got her siblings best interest at heart. She feels that whatever she does in her life will affect her siblings, so she’s always mindful of that. Katrina is a very endearing character that has the reader falling in lover with her from the start. She’s a female lead that any woman reading this story can relate to and respect. As for Grant, his character gives me hope for the male species. He’s just a wonderful human being, who’s chivalrous, kind hearted, knows how to treat a woman, is sexy as hell and a stellar athlete. I absolutely loved him and he had my toes curling on more then one occasion, he’s definitely swoon worthy material in my book.

Quarterback Draw is a well balanced and written story. The romance between Grant and Katrina is endearing and lovely to read. They really are the perfect couple. Like I said earlier their chemistry is off the charts and ensnares the reader from their first meeting. The secondary characters, Anya and Leo(Katrina’s siblings) and Grant’s family(parents and siblings) are loveable, give us more insight into our couple both as individuals and as a couple, while adding another dimension to the story. On top of a well written and passionate romance between Grant and Katrina Jaci also keeps us riveted with the sport side of things with every football game scene. She does a fabulous job of writing these scenes and making the reader feel like they are actually sitting in a football stadium cheering Grant on. How she manages to do that baffles me every time, but I couldn’t be happier with these scenes as I love my sports. All in all this is another successful addition to her Play by Play series and I for one can’t wait for the next installment. Next up is Grant’s brother Tucker and he’s a pro baseball player. One of my fave sports, and I’ll be sure to bring you all the play by play details about that one.

Until next time, happy reading.
