Red QueenAmazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / The Book Depository / BAM

Description:
The poverty stricken Reds are commoners, living under the rule of the Silvers, elite warriors with god-like powers.

To Mare Barrow, a 17-year-old Red girl from The Stilts, it looks like nothing will ever change.

Mare finds herself working in the Silver Palace, at the centre of those she hates the most. She quickly discovers that, despite her red blood, she possesses a deadly power of her own. One that threatens to destroy Silver control.

But power is a dangerous game. And in this world divided by blood, who will win?

Review:

Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard is her debut novel and the 1st book in her Red Queen trilogy. When I read the description of this book, I had decided to give it a shot. WOW All I can say is I am so glad I did, as I became totally immersed into this fabulous and mesmerizing story by Aveyard. Red Queen is a fantasy style dystopian, and if this is Victoria Aveyard’s debut novel, I can’t wait to see what else she has in store for us. Once I started this book, I could not put it down, as it grabs you from the get go, and the world building is fantastic.

Our heroine is Mare Barrow, and she is a Red (red blood) who are considered the lower class citizens in this cruel world. The Reds live in poverty, they are the workers, the servants, and the ones who are sent to war. They have no special ability, therefore they are expendable. Mare has no skills, she is a thief, who goes into town daily and sneakily steals things to provide money and food for the family she loves. Since she has no job, she is scheduled when she reaches her next birthday to be sent off to war, where few survive. When her friend, Kilorn loses his job, he is expected to be sent quickly to the war zone, and Mare is determined to protect him. While she travels to Silver territory to steal more things to save her friend, she meets someone who will change her life forever.

The Silvers (silver blood) are the wealthy, the leaders, the skilled warriors, living in luxury, with various super amazing powers that rule many of the houses. But there is one Royal family, a King, Queen and two princes that rule.

Mare much to her surprise, the day after her trip to Silver territory, is visited by Silver warriors and pulled away from home to work as a servant for the Royals. Of course, Reds have no choice, they must do what they are told to do, but at least she doesn’t have to go to fight in the army. An accident changes things for Mare, as she is thrown into the world of the Silvers, including the Royal family. Out of nowhere, she is now a princess and betrothed to the 2nd prince. The Royal family, conceives a plan to make Mare a long lost princess, and to keep her close. Why? You will need to read this book to find out. Mare has no choice, either be this princess or die.

We meet the two princes that will become a big part of Mare’s life. Cal, is the future King, and he is the one who helped her get the job. Maven, is the 2nd son, and he is the one betrothed to Mare, now known as Mareena. Mare likes both of the princes, which partially looks like a triangle, but in time you will see it is not so.

At this time there is a new Red revolution led by the Scarlet Guard. Despite her now being in the upper class, Mare hates the Royals and all the Silvers, but she has to act the part or die. Queen Elara, who is Maven’s mother, is very powerful, able to read memories of anyone, as well as do mind control to force them to do what she wants. In the midst of all of this, Mare secretly joins forces with the Scarlet Guard to help them. Their motto “We will rise, red as the dawn”. Surrounded by the enemy, and forced to continue this lie, Mare tries to learn all she can, especially being thrown into this political intrigue. What follows is an extremely exciting, non-stop action, and intense battles, not to mention facing all these powers that the Silvers have.

Mare is warned over and over, to trust no one….Anyone can betray anyone. Mare was a terrific heroine, having to face insurmountable odds every step of the way. Cal was hot, and I really liked him. Maven was surprisingly very sweet and good with Mare. But the big question, will Mare’s secret be revealed? Will she survive? Who will betray her?

The last quarter of the book is mind boggling, with a major twist, one which I kind of expected, though not to the degree that it was. There were so many life and death situations, with a range of emotions throughout. I do not want to give spoilers, and anything more would be spoilers. This was extremely exciting, as I could not put the book down, holding my breath with every page. In fact, the following morning, I had to go back and reread the last quarter again. Aveyard has created some amazing and wonderful characters, both good and evil. Red Queen is an intense, exciting and fantastic read. I cannot wait for the next book in this trilogy. Victoria Aveyard has done a fabulous job writing her first novel, and in my opinion, she has a wonderful career in front of her.

HER FORBIDDEN COWBOY (Moonlight Beach Bachelors) by Charlene Sands-a review

Her Forbidden Cowboy

Amazon.com / Barnes and Noble / KOBO / The Book Depository

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date February 3, 2015

Nothing is off-limits for this cowboy in USA TODAY bestselling author Charlene Sands’s story of fame and redemption. Jilted by her ex-fiance Jessica Holcomb finds refuge at her former brother-in-law’s beachfront Southern California mansion. There she discovers country superstar Zane Williams still hunkering down after the devastating loss of his wife. These two wounded souls find their easy friendship healing. So Jess’s sudden attraction to Zane comes as a complete shock. Even more shocking, Zane’s acting like a jealous boyfriend, running interference with men who show interest. Is he just being overprotective? The answer becomes clear when Jess ends up in his bed.

•••••••••••••

REVIEW: HER FORBIDDEN COWBOY is a contemporary, adult, romance storyline from author Charlene Sands that focuses on country music star Zane Williams and his former sister in law –twenty five year old, primary school teacher Jessica Holcomb.

Told from third person point of view, the storyline follows the rebuilding of a relationship-a friendship between Zane and Jessica. When Jessica’s sister (Zane’s wife) was killed in a horrific accident two years earlier, Zane moved from Beckon, Texas to Moonlight Beach, California and never looked back. But Jessica’s life has currently been derailed; her fiancé left her at the altar, leaving a broken hearted Jessica to deal with the aftermath. When her mother approaches Zane about taking in Jessica for the summer, Zane is happy to oblige. Life has been difficult since the death of his wife, but it is about to become more complicated when her look-alike younger sister moves into Zane’s house.

The relationship begins as friends and quickly advances to lovers when Zane’s jealousy rears its ugly head. Jessica has attracted the attention of several men-Zane’s neighbors- and Zane is tired of being alone. Zane is Jessica’s rebound relationship and both go into the affair knowing that it may never last. The love scenes are sensual, gentle and mostly implied. There are no graphic sex scenes, no graphic language or violence.

The secondary characters include Zane’s neighbors-hunky screen actor Dylan McKay; quiet and secretive architect Adam Chase; his housekeeper Mrs. Lopez and his assistant Mariah. I would love to see a couple of storylines focusing on Dylan or Adam-two men whose lives are almost as lonely as Zane’s

HER FORBIDDEN COWBOY is a quick read; a sweet, gentle and uncomplicated romantic storyline about two people who will get a second chance at love. Charlene Sands pulls the reader into an engaging and pleasant story with a happily ever after.

excerpt

Mal stood by the bed and looked down at the woman he’d just fucked.
She was drop-dead gorgeous, lithe and strong with alabaster skin and hair as dark as his own. She was smart and funny, had good taste in wine, and had sucked his cock with rare skill.
Not a bad resume, when you got right down to it, and if Mal had even an ounce of sense he’d slide back into bed, sink deep inside her, and try once more to forget how goddamn lonely he was.
Shit.
She didn’t deserve that. Hell, none of the women he fucked deserved that. Which was why he had a strict one-time only policy. Shared lust and pounding sex to work out some of life’s kinks was one thing. But Mal didn’t do serious or personal. Not anymore.
He’d had serious. He’d had personal.
Hell, he’d had love. Epic, forever, everyone-else-can-just-melt-away love.
And not only love, but respect and humor and passion so intense that he felt alive only when he touched her.
He’d had all that.
Now, all he had was a nightmare.
On the bed, the woman shifted, then smiled up at him, soft and sultry. “Mal? What’s wrong?”
He said nothing, and she sat up, letting the sheet fall to her waist to expose her bare breasts as she held out a hand to him. “Come back to bed and let me make it better.”
If only it was that easy.
“I have to go.”
“Go?” She glanced at the clock and then pulled up the sheet to cover her nakedness. “It’s not even midnight.” Her voice was indignant.
“It can’t be helped.”
“You son-of-a-bitch.”
He didn’t wince, didn’t try to defend himself. What defense was there against the truth?
Instead, he moved to her side, then brushed his fingers lightly over her forehead. “Sleep,” he said, then stepped away as the woman fell back against the pillows, lost once again to the world of dreams.
He pulled the sheet up to cover her, then glanced around the room in search of his clothes. He’d brought her to the penthouse suite at the stunning Gardiner Hotel, a relatively new Fifth Avenue boutique in which he held a significant financial position. Now he moved through the bedroom and parlor, gathering discarded garments as he walked.
He pulled on his jeans, then slipped his arms into the white button-down that he’d worn that evening before going out in search of a woman to take the edge off. He let it hang open as he stepped out onto the patio, then moved to the stone half-wall that separated him from the concrete and asphalt of Fifth Avenue twelve stories below.
It would be easy enough to jump. To end his pain, even if only for a few moments.
And a few moments were all that he would get before the phoenix fire would surround and gather him, reducing him to ashes before once again regenerating him.
Immortality.
Had he truly once believed it was a gift? To have an eternity in this body that could touch and feel and experience such profound pleasure?
Three thousand years ago, it had been a gift, but that was when she’d been beside him, and it was Christina he’d been touching. Caressing.
Christina he’d held in his arms. Whose lips brushed gently over his skin. Who whispered soft words so close to his ear that even her breath aroused him.
But then everything had gone to shit and he’d realized that immortality wasn’t a gift. It was a curse.
He was immortal. He was alone. And every goddamn day was torture.
He closed his eyes and clutched the railing, his hands clenched so tight that the rough-hewn edges of the stone cut into his palms.
Christina…
He reached out with his mind, searching for her as he did every night with equal parts dread and longing.
Sometimes centuries would pass before he felt her presence resonate through him, sometimes only decades.
It had been two hundred and sixty years since the last time he’d found her, her energy reaching out to him even from across the Atlantic, even though she never had a conscious memory of him, or even of herself.
He’d gone to her—and once more, he’d done what he had to do.
Since then, he’d grown complacent, expecting—no, hoping—that he would not feel her. That he would not find her out there in the world.
That he would not have to go to her yet again.
Christina…
Nothing. Not even the slightest tingle of awareness.
Thank god.
He breathed deep, relieved, and slowly let his body relax. He turned to go back inside, but the moment he did, everything shifted. The force of her essence lashed out, catching him unaware.
It surrounded him. Burned through him.
Hot. Powerful. Desperate.
And close.
This time, she was close. So close that it wasn’t just her essence that filled his mind, but her. The memory of her scent enveloped him, the sensation of her skin against his, the taste of her lips, of her flesh.
Oh, god. Oh, Christ.
He sank to his knees, wanting to run. Wanting to retch.
But he could do neither. And slowly—so painfully slowly—he stood.
He would do what he had to do, the same as he had done over and over again for millennia.
He would find her.
He would allow himself one moment to look at her.
And then, goddamn him, he would kill her.

Heartsick

Amazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / BAM

 Description:
Quinn is looking forward to her senior year at Poe University. She has big plans to hang out with her best friend, flirt with a certain boy genius, party at her favorite dive bar and figure out what she’s going to do after graduation with her not-so-useful art major. But that’s before she meets Luke, a hot townie who’s moved back home to help take care of his dying sister. And it’s before a weird epidemic sweeps across campus, mysteriously turning people’s eyes purple. Is it an odd side effect from a new party drug?Is it a rogue virus developed in a campus lab?Is it the mark of the devil?

Soon the town starts blaming the university and the student religious group becomes frighteningly aggressive in their on-campus accusations. Quinn and Luke are caught in the middle—until a tragic accident forces Luke to reveal the one part of himself he’s kept carefully hidden. That he’s so much more than the happy-go-lucky boy next door Quinn had believed him to be isn’t a surprise…but this truth might be too dangerous for her to handle.

Review:

Heartsick by Caitlin Sinead is chock full of romance, backstory, suspense and mystery. Quinn is a senior art major at Poe University, in Allan, Virginia. She seems to be enjoying her life and the direction it is going in. She lives with her roommate and trusted friend Mandy. Their lives consist of typical college behavior – school, frat parties, and hanging out at the local bar. She has a love interest, Rashid – who she just wants to have fun with, he unfortunately wants more. After letting him down easy, Quinn bumps into a local “townie” named Luke. He’s young, cute and just moved back to town. This is exactly what she needs and wants: to have fun with no attachment. After attending a frat party, Mandy wakes up to a life changing surprise. Her eyes have turned purple. Not just a slight change, full on – everyone will notice purple. Quinn scrambles to help Mandy find out exactly what has caused her eyes to change and who or what might be behind it. Mystery ensues as Mandy’s boyfriend now has the same purple eyes and other students are coming down with it as well. And the same fate now befalls Quinn. The local religious fanatics think that the purple eyes are a sign of the devil, and they are out in full force. And life in Allan will never be the same.

But the lives of the ones with the purple eyes have changed. Any injuries they endure are healed at an alarming rate. Those that were sick with disease are now cured. And Quinn soon finds out that Mandy and her boyfriend may know more than what they are letting on as to whom or what has started all of this. Quinn knows that she must get to the bottom of this. And with the help of Detective Peterson she may just do that. But what will it cost her and who will she lose in the process?

I simply adored the character of Quinn. She knows what she wants the majority of the time and she isn’t afraid to speak her mind and say how she feels. She has a tragic backstory which makes her an ideal friend for Mandy – who also has a horrible life history. But their lives mesh and their friendship is real. The love interests of Quinn were quite entertaining. Rashid is into her, he wants more – but she just can not commit to a relationship right now. She wants to have fun and be free to have fun with whoever she wants. Local boy Luke was my absolute favorite. He was mysterious from the get go and made me want to know more about him.   He is the boy next door with a secret. He loves his sisters and would do anything for them – which are what brings him back to Allan. He is strong and protective and wants nothing more than to be with Quinn. As things progress Quinn finds herself wanting to spend more time with him also. But once his secret is revealed will she be able to move forward with him. The interweaving of her past that causes her to question Luke and his secret were a wonderful, emotional storyline. A story that I fell for completely and totally.

I can honestly say that I felt a connection with the majority of the characters. The sub-stories and backstories felt real and were full of substance. The antagonists made my blood boil. Causing me a wide array of emotions.   This was a not my typical genre of book but I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. The story is unique and completely different from anything that I have read before. And the ending was just perfect and left you with just enough unanswered questions that you want and must have more. I am hoping that the author has much more in store for us with a follow up book.

While Holly proves to these two very different people that opposites can, in fact, attract, she also knows more than a few explosive secrets that could heal—or divide—the entire town.

Review:

Rescue Me by Catherine Mann is the 2nd book in her Second Chance Ranch series. This is a very sweet and romantic series that centers on the McDaniel family, as they run their Second Chance Ranch, which brings in stray or abused animals. Lacey McDaniel is a widow and she runs the ranch, which is usually overrun with rescue animals, whom they find permanent and foster homes. In the first book and now in the second, the dog opens each chapter, as they talk to us. Cute.

In Rescue Me, Mary Hannah is our heroine, as she lives at Second Chance Ranch and helps Lacey. Mary Hannah came to the ranch to rebuild her own life, being offered this chance by Lacey’s daughter, Sierra, who has since moved away with her husband Mike. Mary Hannah is trained to help abused and traumatized dogs, as well as being a counselor to help people, who made need her specialized consulting.

AJ, our hero, is a burned out undercover cop who comes to Tennessee to have a slower, less pressured job, that was offered to him by his cousin Wyatt, who also is a cop. The story starts with a rescue mission to save abused dogs in a house that is a drug operation, mostly a meth lab. It was a dangerous mission that Mary Hannah helped the police force gather most of the crazed or scared dogs bringing them to the shelter. When AJ first met Mary Hannah, he did not know who she was and they both enjoyed a one night stand, which neither one of them has forgotten.

Mary Hannah is determined to avoid AJ, since she does not want anyone to know they were together. But the attraction between them is very strong, and it will be a slow build romance. A big part of the story are the dogs that need to be fixed, and trained to be able to live with families. Holly is the main dog in this story, as she was used to breed puppies to sell. AJ is forced to participate in training a rescue dog, as part of his recovery to unstress from his undercover days, and Mary Hannah works with him to train Holly. Needless to say, this will bring them together, each helping the other overcome their own issues, and of course, Holly plans to keep them together, and to keep her. LOL

As I have said, this is a sweet romance, great characters, and the animals are fun. There is two sideline stories around Lacey and Wyatt, as well a crippled young soldier, who has trouble handling his wife and son. All this ties into another wonderful story.

The relationship between Melissa and Huntley has already been established as friends and working partners. Originally involved with other people, our couple will soon fast become lovers when things back home are not going too well. While on assignment, Huntley begins to imagine his life with Melissa when our couple find themselves playing house with two abandoned cubs. The sexual chemistry is intense; the sex scenes imaginative and filled with passion.

The colorful and intense secondary characters include several JAG operatives, jaguar Avengers and both Melissa and Huntley’s exes. The requisite evil pulls the JAG shifters back into the jungles where the poaching chain of command leads our couple back into the rainforest of Costa Rica.

Terry Spear captivates the reader with her wondrous world of jaguar shifters; the sensual and breathtaking scenery; and the emotional and intense love affairs between her couples. excerpt

Once inside the park, Melissa and Huntley trekked for miles, not seeing much of anyone or anything, not with the way the rains were coming down in torrents in the steamy rainforest. They hadn’t found any sign of Jackson. Just a few hikers, hardier than most, who endured the rains and mud to see glimpses of wildlife here and there. When Melissa and Huntley finally set up camp for the night, she felt wet and miserable. And she couldn’t believe how Huntley looked like he could go on for several more hours when she was totally beat.
She should have regretted not sleeping more last night. But making love to him was what she’d needed. Not that she thought anything permanent was likely to come out of the relationship.
Just the same, she’d needed to feel sexy and wanted and loved. Huntley gave that to her and more. So when he’d wanted more, she just couldn’t say no, despite knowing that she needed a good seven hours of sleep to feel normal the next day.
She was thinking of Jackson and how he had slipped away from them the first time. She hoped they’d find him soon. Then gunshots fired off in the distance.
Her heart skipped a couple of beats.
“We don’t have time to take down the tent. Do we go as humans or jaguars?” Huntley quickly asked her.
She loved that about him—how he always included her in the decision making. “If they’re rangers or police, I want to go as humans. Even if they’re poachers, I think we’ll be safer if we look like we are ‘tourists.’ We can always shift when we get there if we need to.”
“Sounds good.”
At least they were armed with tranquilizer guns this time.
