Following on the heels of Illusion, indie sensation and New York Times bestselling author J.S. Cooper brings us the second novel in the Swept Away series, a trilogy of dark and sexy romances about a woman marooned on a desert island with a sexy stranger—but is he friend or foe?

When Bianca and Jakob awake on a sandy shore in the middle of nowhere, their first thoughts are of survival. But as they explore their surroundings and try to discover who stranded them on the island, they can’t deny the electricity surging between them. Soon it’s more than just a campfire keeping them warm…

But just as Bianca is starting to trust Jakob, she uncovers a clue to their abduction—and he may know more than he’s letting on. Was Jakob just as surprised as she to find himself alone with her…or could the man she’s fallen for be her captor?

••••••••••••••

REVIEW: DISILLUSIONED is the second full length installment in J.S.Cooper’s new adult, contemporary Swept Away romantic suspense trilogy focusing on Bianca London and Jakob Bradley. DISILLUSIONED begins immediately following the events of book one ILLUSION where Jakob and Bianca found themselves as ‘kidnapped castaways’ on a deserted, tropical island. As the storyline unfolded, Bianca begins to fall for Jakob but their return to reality reveals not everything or everyone is what or who they appear to be. DISILLUSIONED can NOT be read as a stand alone as it is part two of a three part trilogy where each storyline ends on a cliffhanger leading into the next installment.

Told from first person point of view (Bianca) the focus of the series follows Bianca as she tries to uncover the truth behind her mother’s death; her father’s connection to and subsequent departure from Bradley Inc; and the mysterious letters and notes adding more mystery and confusion to an already convoluted plotline.

DISILLUSIONED finds Bianca lost in a world of heartbreak, hurt and confusion. Mysterious texts, phone messages and notes lead Bianca on a journey where she will discover that no one can be trusted-not even herself because the man with whom she is falling in love quite possibly could be the man who will destroy her life. Along with Jakob, Bianca begins a search that reveals nothing is as it seemed; and everything is all a lie. Friends will become enemies; family will become strangers; the past will become a fantasy of someone else’s making.

J.S. Cooper pulls the reader into a storyline that is awash in betrayal, lies, manipulation and suspense. Trust is never earned; deceit is a part of everyday life. Plenty of partial information is revealed but in the end, we know very little about what happened and how it all went down. JS Cooper gives the reader just enough detail and background awareness that leaves you wondering where it all went wrong and how everybody is connected to one another. Clues and hints are interspersed throughout the storyline-if only our heroine was quicker on the uptake and made use of the information imparted along the way. I recognized a major twist in the story as it began to build in book one-everyone has a Judas in their life-let’s see how these relationships affect the truth. Revenge is the name of the game –a game where the reader has a front row seat.

When problems arise with Luis’ foster care situation, she must decide: can she trust Mack again, when she has so much more to lose?

5 out of 5 for this reader folks!

GRACE BURROWES …. enough said .. THE END!

Just kidding …. LOL I am a huge fan of this author and if you have read any of my previous reviews on her books you know I am about to sing from the top of mountains for her writing.

Kiss Me Hello is her third and final book of her contemporary romance Sweet Kisses series. This trilogy is based off the Knightley brothers and Mackenzie Knightley is the brother I was most intrigued by. Grace, you sure did deliver here!

Sidonie, our leading lady is a whole lot of complicated and has some serious issues going on. She is the foster mother to her son Luis, is trying to keep her head above water both financially and mentally, and is desperately fighting to keep her foster son. Then … Mack enters! Mack has a whole lot of issues as well (thank goodness we find out what was going on with him .. totally teased in the past books) and hasn’t been with a woman in 10 years. Mack becomes a real pillar of strength to Sid throughout this book and this blossoming romance is a joy to read about. There is a deep friendship in this relationship and you pray that it is enough to keep them bonded when their damaged pasts are revealed to the other. Suddenly, there is a chance for family and happiness if these two can trust in the other … but trust can lead to heartache which neither will survive is broken.

I always say there is a maturity value to Grace Burrowes writing. She doesn’t write “ooey gooey” immature love. There is a friendship that develops out of mutual respect that leads to love. This kind of love includes all the dark and bitter as well as the bright and sweet .. it’s completely refreshing and believable. I love how her novels overlap and you always get reacquainted with past characters and see how they are doing presently.

I am all about the Grace Burrowes historical romance, but she is sold me on her contemporary writing as well … another great series completed and looking forward to more!

HAPPY READING! 🙂

excerpt

“This is a nice spot,” Mac said. “The horses will loaf here in the hotter months because the trees make for good shade, but the canopy isn’t quite done leafing out yet, so we’ll be able to see the moon come over the ridge.” He spread the blanket on a patch of grass up the slope from the pond.Sid settled on the blanket, running her hand over what felt like soft flannel, while Mac lowered himself beside her.

“Give me your foot.” Mac didn’t wait for her to comply. He took Sid by the foot, and drew her running shoe off. “Other one.”

He peeled her socks down and tucked them into her shoes, then unlaced his boots and set them beside the blanket, stuffing a sock in each one.”Moonrise is always best appreciated barefoot.”

The sentiment was poetical; the words were not. “Is that a rule?”

“Suppose it is.” He took off his jacket, balled it up, and lay back to rest his head on it. “Come here and let me hold you, Sidonie. I haven’t watched the moon come up with a lovely woman in my arms for years.”

She settled against him, resting her head on the slope of his shoulder.”We’re going to talk about rules like this?” He thought she was lovely.

“We’ll come to some understandings.” His arm came around her shoulders, and his hand stroked over her hair. “I’ll undo this braid while we’re at it.”

“Don’t lose my elastic.”

His fingers were soon winnowing through her hair, drawing the length of it over her shoulder.

“How am I supposed to think about rules when you’re touching me like this,MacKenzie?”

“You don’t need to think. You just tell me what’s true for you.”

“True about what?”

He went quiet again, while Sid repositioned herself against him. She could hear his heart beat, feel the slow, steady thud of his life’s blood beneath her cheek.

“What do you want from me, Sidonie Lindstrom? What do you need?”

“Nobody has asked me that before.” She considered her answer, while Mac’s hand drifted through her hair, across her back, down her arm. “I want a friend, I guess. You’ve been a friend to me, and I wasn’t expecting to find that here.”

“Is that all you want? I can be a good friend. My brothers would vouch for me in that regard.”

She could not tell from his voice if he was disappointed with her answer,or pleased. “No, that isn’t all I want, but I’ll settle for it, and be grateful if that’s where you want to draw the line. A friend, a real friend, is nothing to scoff at.”

Another silence, while Mac got his hand on her nape and started massaging the tension there. His idea of friendship would soon leave Sid witless and boneless.

“I can’t expect you to put yourself out there without showing I’m willing to do likewise: I want you.” Mac’s voice was quiet in the gathering darkness. “I want you at least for a friend, an intimate friend, Sidonie, but I don’t share something that precious. If you allow me the privileges of a lover, then I will expect that for whatever time I enjoy that status, those privileges are exclusively mine. You will agree to this, or our friendship keeps its clothes on.”

Sid shivered, though the night wasn’t uncomfortably cool, and Mac gave off heat like a woodstove. He was so serious about this, when they could have shared a casual romp in the moonlight.

She would have settled for that-and settling would have been a mistake.

She traced his facial features. Beyond serious, he was solemn, as if these understandings he sought could be the foundation for something evengreater than friendship.

“If you agree to my terms,” he said, his hand slowing in her hair, “you agree because it’s what you want too, not because I need to hear the words and you have a private agenda that’s different from what you’ll say to me.”

He was asking for honesty, the most basic tenet of a real friendship. Friends were kind to each other, considerate, patient, reliable, but above all, a friend was somebody who told the truth.

“I don’t have much practice with relationships, MacKenzie.”

He rolled slowly, like the earth heaving up, until Sid was on her back with Mac blanketing her. “There’s more to say.” He rested his forehead against hers. “A lot more, but right now, Sidonie, I have to kiss you. Have to.”

Sins of a Duke by Stacy Reid – a Review

Sins of a Duke by Stacy Reid – a Review

Sins of a Duke

 Amazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo

Description:
She would be his perfect revenge…

All of the young ladies whispered about the Duke of Mondvale in hushed tones, their eyes following his tall, dark figure with barely disguised lust. For the newly-ostracized Lady Constance Thornton, he is magnetic and altogether desirable. Irresistibly so. Since her reputation is already ruined in London society, why shouldn’t she be impudent and dance with the scandalous “Lord of Sin”?

Little does she know of his plans. The beautiful and innocent Lady Constance is no mere plaything for Lucan Wynwood. She will be his revenge. By ruining her, he will have his vengeance against herbrother. Except that the Lady Constance is full of surprises… and now she could well be the ruin of him.

Review:

Sins of a Duke is the 3rd novel for Stacey Reid in her Scandalous House of Calydon series. Having not read the previous two stories in this series I didn’t find it hard to follow along or get involved in the story or characters. The setup and general plot of the story is well orchestrated and laid out for the reader, allowing one to quickly become immersed in the world that Ms. Reid creates in Sins of a Duke.

I very much enjoyed this book. It begins with a mission of revenge but soon turns into one of romance and love. Our hero the Duke of Mondvale is set upon a quest for revenge against Constance’s brother the Duke of Calydon over what happened to his dear sister. Only one small problem, his target, Lady Constance becomes more then just an act of revenge for our Duke Lucan Wynwood. She becomes the object of affection and love he never thought possible for a man like him. Ever since that fateful night and their chance meeting and dance under the stars Lucan is taken by Constance and can’t seem to keep his mind on matters of revenge. Instead of staying to his plan, every time he and Constance are together his mind goes off in a totally different direction.

For Lady Constance, being seen with the Lord of Sin doesn’t seem to be a problem for her since she is already ruined in the eyes of the Haute Monde for being a bastard. The Beautiful Bastard has since become what she is referred to by the Haute Monde since it was discovered that her mother had an affair and she was the product. Since she feels she will never be called upon by someone in the higher circles why not go after something that is forbidden and strictly for herself. I loved Constance’s character. She’s a breath of fresh air among the stuffiness of the women of the Haute Monde. How they looked down upon everything and everyone who they didn’t deem worthy drives me batty. I love it when someone stands up to them and decides to stick it to them. Enter Constance who goes by the beat of her own drum. This is one of the reasons Lucan is so taken by her. Even though it’s his fault society found out about her birth situation she goes about her day and doesn’t let society see that their dismissal of her bothers her. Constance is a very strong, intelligent and strong minded women. She knows what she wants and isn’t afraid to go get it, even if it means going in disguise to a well known gentlemen’s club run by none other then our dashing Duke Lucan Wynwood.

Constance and Lucan are perfect for each other. Both are very strong characters, know what they want and will go after it with everything they have. Their scenes together are sweet and funny at times, while others are passionate and sexually charged. We get to see what it is that motivates both of them and how they’ve both come to this particular point in their lives. The romance between them isn’t rushed and gives the reader the chance to learn about each as individuals and as a couple. Keeping the romance moving along at a steady pace while keeping Lucan’s plans of revenge simmering on the outer edges of that romance adds a spark and kick to the story and keeps the reader on the edge of their seat waiting to see if Constance will ever find out the truth of Lucan’s sudden appearance in her life, and if she does what will it mean for Lucan’s growing feelings of love for Constance. Does this romance stand a chance with a quest for revenge as the motivation for their courtship?

Sins of a Duke is a fast paced quick read, that’s filled with revenge, redemption, passion and romance. The story is well played and keeps the reader on the edge of their seat waiting to see what will happen next for Lucan’s plan of revenge and his growing feelings of love towards his unsuspecting target Lady Constance. This was a fun read, that kept me entertained from beginning to end. If you are a fan of historical romance that’s filled will all of the above, then I highly recommend this one to you.

For now, happy reading.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date March 3, 2015

Adopted a few weeks after birth, Ivy Morales suspects that she might not be totally human. Fully aware that one whisper of such insanity would land her in a mental institution, she keeps the outlandish thought to herself. But there’s no ignoring the increasingly vivid and stunningly powerful dreams of an ancient blood feud that plague her nightly—or the darkly erotic turn those dreams have recently taken.

Drawn to Mexico for Spring Break, Ivy unwittingly stumbles right into the path of the same evil presence from her mysterious dreams. Kidnapped and held hostage, she has only one chance to survive. She reaches out to the wickedly sexy man from her dreams and prays he’ll answer her call for help.

Welsh dragon shifter Ian Madoc struggles to understand the strange dream connection he shares with this unknown woman. In all his centuries of life, he’s never experienced anything like it—and it unsettles him. When the dreams turn to pleas for help, Mad rushes off in the middle of the night, hell-bent on saving the young woman he fears may be his mate.

But rescuing Ivy from the clutches of the Knights is only the beginning of Mad’s problems. When Ivy’s true identity is revealed, old secrets and a close friend’s betrayal put him at odds with the rest of the Brotherhood. Protecting the dragon species is no longer his top priority. He’ll do anything to keep Ivy safe, even if it means walking away from the only life he’s ever known.

•••••••••••••

REVIEW: WICKED DARK DRAGON is the third novella in Lolita Lopez’s contemporary, adult Dragon Heat paranormal romance series focusing on the few remaining dragon shifters in the world. This is Welsh dragon shifter Madoc and university student Ivy Morales’s storyline. WICKED DARK DRAGON can be read as a stand alone but there is a bit of background information required to understand the ongoing war with the Knights (more is revealed in the current story), and the future storylines will continue upon the same path. The novella picks up immediately after events of Red Hot Dragon-book 2.

The focus of the novella finds Ivy imprisoned by the Knights. The Knights are an ancient group, humans, who have sworn to destroy and kill every last dragon. Their ongoing war with the dragons finds the current group of Knights going against the rules of combat and entering into territory they do not belong.

Ivy knows she isn’t quite ‘normal’; she has dreamt about dragons since the age of six; and she has the ability to match make and see the future. It is Ivy’s true heritage and DNA that the Knights will use against the dragons and their mates.

The relationship between Ivy and Madoc is one of immediate attraction; they are mates but the mating heat has yet to touch Ivy as she is not fully dragon. Enter Mad’s friends and fellow dragons who betray our couple sending them into a frenzy not of their own making. It is the ‘dragon mating heat’ that will draw out the Knights, and in this, the dragons have placed everyone in danger with their underhanded actions and dishonesty towards one of their own. To understand the intent does not necessitate the approval of their actions. Mad and Ivy are likeable characters; there is definite heat and intense attraction.

The secondary characters include all of the dragons previously introduced throughout the series. Griffin and Avani ( book 2) are still experiencing the call to mate; and the revelation of someone long thought dead, adds a twist to the Knights’s attempts to bring Ivy back alive.

The world building is a little more detailed and developed in book three. There isn’t always room for vast amounts of back history, elements or components in short stories, but WICKED DARK DRAGON reveals more information than the previous two storylines, in this, the reader begins to better understand the who, what and why.

Lolita Lopez continues to build upon a history between human and dragons; the ongoing war with the Knights; and the dragon’s need to mate. With only a few remaining dragons in existence, time is running out to ensure a future for their own kind. There are moments of betrayal and revenge; romance and love; and in the end, the storyline ends on a bit of a cliffhanger.

WICKED DARK DRAGON is an entertaining storyline; a paranormal romance where another dragon finds his mate; where betrayal comes at the hands of someone you know. Lolita Lopez invites you into her world of dragon shifters. Here’s looking forward to many more stories.

About the book: Release Date March 17, 2015

College drop-out, Roxy Cumberland, moved to New York with dreams of becoming an actress, but her dwindling bank account is quickly putting the kibosh on that fantasy. To make some quick cash, she signs up to perform singing telegrams. Her first customer is a gorgeous, cocky Manhattan trust-funder if she ever laid eyes on one. And what could be more humiliating than singing an ode to his junk, courtesy of his last one night stand? Maybe the fact that she’s dressed in a giant, pink bunny costume…

After a night out to celebrate winning his last case, lawyer Louis McNally II isn’t prepared for the pounding in his head or the rabbit serenading him from the front door. But the sassy wit and sexy voice of the girl behind the mask intrigues him, and one look at her stunning face—followed by a mind-blowing kiss against his doorjamb—leaves Louis wanting more.

Roxy doesn’t need a spoiled rich boy who’s had everything in life handed to him on a Tiffany platter. But there’s more to Louis than his sexy surface and he’s determined to make Roxy see it…even if it means chasing her all over NYC.

••••••••••••••

REVIEW: CHASE ME is the first installment in Tessa Bailey’s new adult, contemporary Broke and Beautiful erotic romance series. This is struggling actress Roxy Cumberland and attorney Louis McNally’s storyline

Told from alternating third person points of view the focus of the storyline is the building relationship between Louis and Roxy, as well as Roxy’s struggles to make ends me. Kicked out of her apartment for not paying the rent, Roxy ventures into the world of singing telegrams, which will land her face to face (or bunny mask) with Louis McNally. Louis is intrigued by the sultry voiced woman dressed as a giant, pink rabbit but, in all of the mayhem, he doesn’t ask her name. While Roxy continues to audition for roles and a new apartment, Louis continues to search for the woman whom he can’t get out of his mind.

The attraction between Roxy and Louis is immediate and intense. Neither one is unable to forget about their first introduction or the kiss that Roxy used to put Louis in his place. Roxy is a feisty, independent young woman with dreams of making it big; she wants to succeed all on her own. Louis is a bit of a man-whore but he is a success in the courtroom and knows a thing or two about how to treat the women in his life. The sex scenes are erotic, sultry and hot. Louis likes to talk dirty in bed, on the floor, and up against the wall.

The secondary and supporting characters are colorful and add a little bit of humor and snark to the storyline. We are introduced to Louis’s best friends and beer drinking buddies Ben and Russell, as well as Roxy’s new roommates Abby and Honey. There is an instant connection between Russell and one of Roxy’s friends-I suspect their storyline will be told next.

The world building follows Louis’s career as he is determined to do pro-bono work for the under privileged; and Roxy’s numerous auditions for bit parts and starring roles. Louis’s twin sisters Lena and Celeste play a small role throughout allowing a bit of insight into the McNally sibling dynamics and family love

CHASE ME has a little bit of everything: humor, heartbreak, perceived betrayal, romance, sex and love. Tessa Bailey will captivate your imagination pulling you into her world of provocative and emotional adventures all ending with a happily ever after.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date March 10, 2015

Possessed by a need to save a beautiful Amazon warrior from the vision he witnessed, Loke snatched her from the midst of the battle between the Third and Fifth realm of the demons, and carried her to his home deep in the black mountains of Hell to protect her. But as the fierce little female awakens, he finds she’s anything but grateful, and his dragon instincts roar to life to warn she might be more to him than an enemy—she might be his fated female.

Anais remembers meeting a handsome warrior in the heat of battle, a man who was her enemy but who looked at her with eyes that held dark heat and wicked promises. When she wakes to find that same dragon shifter has taken her captive, desire is the last thing on her mind, but escaping him to return to Archangel, the hunter organisation she works for, sounds less than appealing when he reveals the reason he took her—to stop her from dying.

Can Loke protect Anais from the dangers of his realm and how far will he go to save her from the future he keeps witnessing? Can Anais resist the fierce attraction that burns between them as hot as fire and stay true to Archangel or will her heart be taken by the dragon?

••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: TAKEN BY A DRAGON is the seventh inslallment in Felicity Heaton’s ETERNAL MATES paranormal romance, fantasy series focusing on shifters, demons, Fae, elves, vampires and more. This is dragon shifter Loke, and Anais’s storyline. Anais is a hunter who works for Archangel Industry-a group that studies the supernatural powers and paranormal activity. TAKEN BY A DRAGON can be read as a stand alone although many of the previous storyline characters are beginning to cross over between the novels, along with hints at future matings and relationships.

Told from alternating third person points of view, the focus of the storyline is two fold: The opening finds Anais on the battlefield in the Third Realm of Hell when she is unglamorously abducted and held against her will by a dragon who claims that he has seen the future. Loke felt compelled to save Anais the minute a vision of her death clouded his mind. Anais is unsure as to how to handle the news and attempts to escape only to find herself the prisoner of another dragon who is more than willing to take what he wants-and what he wants will surely end Anais’s life.

Secondly, Anais knows that the people from Archangel Industry will be on the hunt for their missing female and Anais is more than willing to let the people in charge do what they do best. It is only when she and Loke return to the human realm does she realize the gross error in judgment about the people with whom she works.

The relationship between Anais and Loke begins combatively and reluctantly although their attraction to one another is immediate and intense; Loke believes he has found his fated mate but humans rarely survive a mating the a supernatural species and with this comes fear, desire and longing. A good portion of the storyline finds our couple ruminating out the past, present and future-a stream of consciousness as to the here and now. Anais’s life is threatened and at risk on numerous occasions, and Loke finds himself as protector, guardian and shield. The sexual tension is strong. The $ex scenes are intimate, arousing and romantic.

The secondary and supporting characters include many of the previous storylines couples, cast and paranormal beings. Favors are called in; promises made; futures unknown. We are introduced to several dragons from the Third Realm of Hell, as well as an assortment of battling Elves and Fae who long thought one another had died or at the very least, had disappeared to another realm. With the new arrivals, comes a quick glimpse into the future of Felicity Heaton’s ETERNAL MATES series-one that involves Angels, demons, dark Fae and elves. There is some dark and dangerous history that is slowly revealing in each successive storyline.

TAKEN BY A DRAGON ventures between the human world and the Third Realm of Hell where a battle rages between the supernatural powers and Archangel Industry. The flow and pacing are even; the tension and anxiety is high. There is plenty of action both on and off the battlefield.

Felicity Heaton’s ETERNAL MATES is a fantasy of the mind; a virtual color reel of imagination; a fascinating and imaginative series that will leave you wanting more.

Excerpt

Anais straightened and looked him right in the eyes, refusing to let how beautiful they were distract her.

“Take me back.”

His eyes darkened and his lips compressed into a thin line. “No.”

Fine. He wanted to do things the hard way and she was good with that. If he wouldn’t take her back out of the kindness of his black dead heart, she would force him to do it at knifepoint.

Anais slowly shifted away from the wall of the cave, heading into the open area between the dragon and the fire. He countered her, turning on the spot, keeping his front to hers. A darker edge flickered in his eyes, one that warned he was on to her and knew she intended to attack now.

“Last chance. Take me back.” She was fairly certain that he wasn’t going to take her up on her offer. She knew stubborn when she saw it. She looked at it in the mirror each day. In a battle of stubbornness, he wouldn’t win.

He took a step towards her.

Anais kicked off, lunging towards him, her eyes on the knife sheathed against his left hip.

He snatched her wrist before she could reach it, his strong grip sending a hot bolt of electricity arcing along her bones. She twisted her arm in his grip, turning her back to him and coming around on his left side. She made another grab for the knife with her free hand and he whipped the arm he held her with forwards, shoving her away from him and making her miss her target.

His growl echoed around the cave and she ducked beneath his other hand as he tried to grab her.

She broke free of his grip but didn’t back off. She didn’t know what he wanted with her, but she wasn’t going to stick around to find out. He’d had his chance to play nice. Now she was going to play rough.

He stepped into her and she brought her knee up hard, slamming it straight into his balls.

He grunted and doubled over and victory flashed through her as he cupped himself, leaving his knife wide open.

Anais made a grab for it.

He reacted in an instant, his head coming up and his hands leaving his groin. In a lightning fast move, he had blocked her attempt, knocking her hand away. She unleashed a short noise of frustration and attacked him, swinging her fist at his face. He blocked again, and again, stopping every punch she threw or kick she swung at him. Her anger rose with each failed attempt to hit him, her temper fraying at the same time.

The bastard was humouring her.

It was there in his eyes as he blocked her, always defending and never attacking. Their bright jewel-blue depths shimmered with amusement. He knew he could stop her any time he wanted because he was far stronger and quicker than she was.

Son of a bitch.

She growled and went to kick him between his legs again, and he caught her shin with both hands, stopping her. She tried to take her leg back but he refused to let go.

Anais launched a solid right hook at him, lost her balance and almost fell. His hand on her upper arm stopped her. What the hell? She would have thought he would be pleased if she had landed face first on the black ground, humiliating herself, but he had saved her.

She had the strangest notion as she pulled free of his grip and faced him.

He didn’t want to hurt her.

His self-assuredness wasn’t the reason why he was only defending. He wasn’t doing it to amuse himself either. He was doing it because any other course of action might hurt her.

He cemented that feeling when she made another lunge for the knife and he grabbed her right upper arm. The cut beneath the sleeve of her black t-shirt burned and she flinched, biting her tongue to muffle the cry of pain that blazed up her throat.

He quickly released her and backed off, distancing himself.

“I am sorry.” He lowered his hands to his sides.

Anais wasn’t sure what to make of him, but she refused to let his behaviour sway her. He probably wanted that. He wanted her to lower her guard.

She rubbed her arm and he looked away from her, glancing down at the ground beside his bare feet.

Giving her one hell of a golden opportunity she wasn’t about to waste.

She made a break for it, her boots eating up the black ground between her and the cave mouth.

“No!” His roar deafened her and echoed around the cave and the mountains beyond.

Strong arms banded around her waist from behind before she could reach the exit of the cave. She caught a glimpse of a green-black world as he lifted her off the ground—a swath of thick forest that covered the valley below the side of the mountain she was in and the forbidding black mountains all around her. That view disappeared as he turned her in his powerful arms, twisting her to face him, and shocked her by pinning her to his very solid chest.

“Do not go that way, Little Amazon,” he husked, his deep voice strained and thick with emotion.

Anais shoved at his chest as panic burst through her, sending her pulse racing, and her mind screamed at her to escape his hold.

He didn’t fight her. He turned so she was closest to the fire and set her down. The moment he released her, she backed off, placing some distance between them again and breathing hard to quell the dizzying rush of her heart.

He remained where he was as she slowly pulled herself back together, towering over her, and she found herself staring up at his handsome face. He looked as raw with emotion as his voice had sounded. Why?

As much as she wanted to know the answer to that question, she wanted her freedom even more.

She tried to get around him again but he countered her each time, moving left or right to block her path, keeping her contained in the back half of the cave, away from the mouth.

“You cannot leave.”

Those three words chilled her to her bones and panic and fear surged back to the surface, an unstoppable force that she could no longer control. They shook her and she couldn’t stop them from chipping away at her strength, breaking down her courage and filling her mind with a thousand horrific scenarios she didn’t want to entertain but was powerless to shut out.

“What do you want with me?” she whispered, unable to find her voice as she stilled and stared at him, her heart hammering against her chest and her hands shaking. She curled her fingers into fists and drew down a deep breath, trying to steady herself when all she really wanted to do was collapse onto her knees and maybe even cry. “Why won’t you let me leave?”

“Others cannot see you.” He looked back over his bare shoulder, towards the cave mouth. “It is not safe for you out there, Little Amazon.”

“It’s not safe for me in here either.” She clenched her fists and narrowed her eyes on him.

He turned back to face her, his expression soft and a touch wounded. Bloody hell, she wasn’t sure what to make of him.

“What do you want with me?” She tried again, needing an answer this time, because she feared he intended to do something terrible to her, even when there was a part of her heart that said it was never going to happen.

He had been upset and had apologised when he had hurt her, and that reaction had been genuine. She had met enough good guys and enough bastards in her life to know them apart. A man who reacted in such a manner as he had wasn’t the sort of man who would then resort to physical abuse.

“I want to keep you safe.”

Of course, men who didn’t want to hurt women could also be dangerously possessive of them. He might be the type who was acting out an obsession, a deep need to nurture and take care of another person, despite how much it terrified that person or how little they wanted to be there with them.

“It’s hard for me to believe that when you kidnapped me.” She backed off another step and did a quick scan of the cave again, checking her options.

He had left the back of the cave open to her, which meant he didn’t think she could escape that way. Her only option was getting past him. Her hope tried to deflate but she refused to let it happen. She would get out of here and away from him.

It just might not be this instant.

His face softened again and he held his right hand out to her as his blue eyebrows furrowed. Like hell she was going to take it. He could want to comfort her all he liked, but she didn’t have to let him fulfil that need.

A flicker of resignation crossed his expression and he looked at his hand, smiled briefly, and lowered it to his side. “I had to. If I had not—”

Dread went through her like shards of ice.

“If you hadn’t… what?” Anais couldn’t stop herself from advancing a step towards him. She didn’t like how he had cut himself off or the flash of fear that had touched his face.

He dropped his gaze to the patch of ground between them and it turned distant. “Dragons have the gift of foresight. What I saw…”

A chill ran through her as she remembered how he had looked at her on the battlefield and how she had felt in that moment. A deep sense of connection had bloomed inside her and he had looked as if he had shared it, and then he had changed. The heat in his eyes had turned to darkness that had coloured his expression, making it grim. She had felt that same sharp stab of dread in that moment, a sickening sensation of her life draining from her.

A heartbeat later, he had grabbed her. No longer a man. He had been an enormous, and breathtakingly beautiful, blue dragon. He had tucked her against the paler blue plates of his chest, holding her gently in both huge front paws, as if he had wanted to shield her, and then he had attacked everyone.

Her side.

His.

He had driven them all away from her.

Because of what he had seen?

“I cannot let you leave. Please, Little Amazon.” His blue eyes implored her to listen to him, flooded with sincerity, hope and a dash of fear. “I will return you… when I am sure you will be safe.”

Anais shook her head, reeling and trying to make sense of everything. It crashed over her, muddling her feelings and leaving her shaken.

“We were in a battle,” she said and shook her head again. “I knew the risks. You had no reason to save me. I wasn’t a damsel in distress. I was there to fight. Why save me? I was… am… your enemy.”

He stared at her, blinking slowly, unmoving as silence stretched between them. She couldn’t read him at all. She had no clue about how he felt or what he might say. His expression gave nothing away.

He held her gaze, his blue eyes locked with hers. “I did it because I had to.”

“That isn’t an answer.” She took another step towards him, growing frustrated with him and with herself. What was she doing? Did she want him to give her an answer that would sway her? Did she want him to say something that would make her trust him?

Hell, maybe she had been right on coming around. She had passed out from lack of oxygen and her brain had been starved of it, because nothing she was thinking or feeling was making any sense to her logical mind.

Something about the man standing before her had her throwing logic and all of her training out of the window, and listening to her heart over her head.

Anais shut down the softer part of herself and forced herself to focus again. She needed to get away from the dragon and this cave, but he was right. It was probably more dangerous out there. She needed to know what she would be up against and where she was in Hell. She needed a plan, or she would end up in an even worse position than she was now.

“It is the only answer I have,” he whispered and he looked as if it didn’t make sense to him either, but he had been unable to find another one to give to her. “I had a vision, and I responded to it. I had no choice. It was instinct. I wanted to protect you.”

Another sensation went through Anais, this one not altogether pleasant either, and it frightened her a lot more than the thought of dying.

She had seen how King Thorne of the demons had acted around Sable, driven by instinct to protect her at any cost because she was his fated mate. Some of the species of Hell had such mates, a person fated for them.

One in a lifetime.

She stared at the dragon where he stood with his back to the cave mouth, cragged black mountains as his backdrop and the light from the fire behind her shining on him, turning his skin golden as it flickered across his honed bare chest and arms, and his blue-leather-clad legs.

He was every bit as stunning as he had been on the battlefield.

A dark and alluring warrior who spoke to her on a deep and primal level.

The sense of fierce attraction and connection returned.

This time it filled her head with flashes of Sable and Thorne, of how they behaved around each other, driven by a possessive need of each other, a hunger that went beyond mere attraction and desire, defying all logic and reason.

Bloody hell.

She refused to allow herself to believe that the man standing before her, a dragon shifter, was such a thing for her. He was a means to an end. A source of information. She would bide her time, gather knowledge, and once she was ready she would escape and return to her world, the one that made sense to her. The one filled with logic and reason, just how she liked it.

“Swear you won’t hurt me and that you’ll return me to my people.” It never hurt to have a few assurances that she could use to quell her fears. He was a warrior. He wasn’t a team player by his own admission, but warriors always had a code. He would keep his vows.

He pressed his left hand to his bare chest and bowed his head. “You have my word. In return, you will swear you will not attempt to leave.”

Anais nodded. “You have my word.”

His hand drifted downwards, drawing her gaze with it, over honed muscles that delighted her eyes and heated her insides. His voice was rich and warm, as deep as an ocean as he spoke to her, cranking her temperature up another few degrees and making her forget she was meant to be afraid of him not attracted to him.

“Will you stay, Little Amazon?”

Anais raised her eyes back to his. They were bright, spotted with gold fire, entrancing her as much as his voice and his body.

She nodded, and for some reason it wasn’t as reluctant as it should have been.

Heaven help her.

She wasn’t sure it was such a great idea after all, because she was certain there wasn’t enough willpower in the entire planet that she could draw on to stop herself from succumbing to the desire that swept through her whenever she looked at him.

Val’s determined to find her, but will a future with Sam mean giving up the freedom he’s always craved?

Review:

5 out of 5 for this reader folks!   This book has now moved this entire series to my REREAD shelf. There now that I got that out I can start what I commonly refer to as “The Becky Lower Gush”. LOL 😉

Expressly Yours, Samantha (seriously love this title Becky) is the 7th book of her historical romance Cotillion Ball Series. When one think of historical romance you expect to be swept some where over in Europe, but not this series. Becky mixes it up by placing the setting in 1860’s USA. If you have never heard of The Pony Express well that will change once you devour this read.

Samantha Hughes (AKA “Sam”) is on the run from her seriously evil uncle. She makes the decision to pose as a man and ride The Pony Express but all positions are filled until she comes across Valerian Fitzpatrick who himself is running in his own way. Val get’s her a job working the stables assuming she is a he, and forms a friendship with her. Although Val knows something is off about “Sam”, he decides to let “Sam” speak on his own terms about secrets that “he” is hiding. Well fate takes that out of their hands when our twosome endure a gun fight and Samantha is injured. Left with no choice but to search for her wounds, Val discovers a lot more than a gunshot. Suddenly more than a friendship is possible and the attraction is heated. Before they know it though, jerkface uncle reappears and threatens a happy probable future.

So much more to this book, but I don’t do too many details! 😉

Becky you are such a vivid writer. I swear I can see the images you write to paper, taste the food, smell the smells, feel the fear and hurt of gun fighting and hear the hearts that pound with anticipation. You have taken us to a few American cities throughout this series so it was only natural that we were taken to the Wild West. I adore these characters and giggled to myself in anticipation of Val finding out “Sam’s” truth. I have to say though, meeting my fave brother and sisters is always the “icing on the cake” in your novels .. it’s like coming home! 🙂

This book I suppose could be read as a stand alone .. but why??? Check out this entire series. If you are a true historical romance lover and especially is you like something a little different, then Becky Lower is the author for you!

HAPPY READING! 🙂

The Italians Deal for I Do by Jennifer Hayward – a Review

The Italians Deal for I Do by Jennifer Hayward – a Review

The Italians Deal For I Do

Amazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / The Book Depository / BAM

Description:
The Irresistible Italian: Married for Business

He’s conquered global markets and immeasurable hearts, but to regain control of the fashion empire that’s rightfully his, Rocco Mondelli must prove his playboy days are over. His secret weapon? Supermodel-in-hiding Olivia Fitzgerald…and the power to ruin her if she refuses to play his loving fiancée!

But returning to the world stage revives Olivia’s old demons, and instead of walking down the aisle toward her gorgeous groom—she flees! The world holds its breath: Can the indomitable Rocco get his wayward bride to the altar on time?

The world’s sexiest billionaires finally say “I do”!

Review:

The story begins with a tragic loss that not only breaks Rocco and his sister’s hearts, but also has him reeling. The Mondelli fashion empire should be his outright, but it seems his grandfather had other ideas. And, a few secrets. Once the will is read, a series of events unfold that has consequences for everyone. Especially Rocco and an unknown female living in an apartment that his grandfather had purchased and made available to said female. Rocco is convinced that his grandfather was having an affair with a young woman and he was also convinced that the young woman was using his grandfather. Throw into the mix that once he figures out the unknown female is none other than Olivia Fitzgerald, who fell off the earth a year earlier, and things really get dicey.

Even though Olivia tries to reassure Rocco that there was nothing between her and his grandfather other than business and friendship, Rocco is not convinced . He comes up with a scheme that will not only give Olivia what she wants, but will get the board off of his back and ultimately give him full control of the House of Mondelli. As Rocco and Olivia carry out the charade, it doesn’t take Rocco too terribly long to realize that things weren’t as they seemed. But, as Olivia hits the runways again to carry out her end of the bargain, and the old demons resurface, will she be able to seal the Italian’s deal for I do?? Well, my friends, you’ll just have to read and find out. And, oh, what a read it is!!

The Italian’s Deal for I Do is an awesome story. Jennifer Hayward has done a wonderful job with developing both of these characters. Rocco, who was hardened as a child by the death of his mother and his father’s downward spiral, is a delicious character. Just the right amount of alpha without being too dominant, and when the chips are down, he’s just the right amount of hero. Olivia’s demons have somewhat to do with her childhood as well, but more due to the fact that her mother had ISSUES that Olivia paid for literally and figuratively. She is such a multifaceted character that you’ll feel for her as her heart breaks and as it’s put back together. We don’t get to see a lot of the supporting characters, namely Rocco’s best friends, and fellow moguls, from college and his sister, but I have a feeling that we’ll be seeing them again. SOON I hope!! We get just a little taste of their personalities and I can wait for the whole spoonful! If you’re looking for a wonderfully written romance with very tasty characters, The Italians Deal for I Do is for you! I cannot wait for the next one!! Well done, Jennifer Hayward. Very very well done.
