ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date March 5, 2015

After Emily Ethan is gone, Jason is left with too many questions unanswered. Betrayed by the one he loved and yet hurting after losing her, Jason is eager to find out what actually happened to Emily.

When he least expects it, the Darksighted return to New York City, but they are not after Jason. They seek to destroy those who may know something about where Emily can be.

The more Jason gets to know the world of Energy and Sight, the harder it is for him to belong in this world. He can’t enter the Sight when there are too many people around. And then Emily comes to his dreams and gives him clues of where to look for the answers.

The question is: should he believe her, or is it just another attempt to get him killed?

•••••••••••••

REVIEW: PATH OF THE HERETIC is the second installment in Ivan Amberlake’s dystopian-style The Beholder urban fantasy series. The continuing story finds Jason Walker aka The Beholder on the search for the Heretic and Emily Ethan. I would strongly suggest reading the series in order as a large portion of the world building and background information are revealed in book one-THE BEHOLDER.

Told from several third person perspectives, the storyline and the series focus on a dystopian future where the Lightsighted (good) are at war with the Darksighted (evil). The Sighted have the ability to manipulate energy using the ‘Sight’-a virtual world where everything is revealed in energy, color and light. The prophecies have foretold of The Beholder, and the Lightsighted have found their Savior, the ONE, in Jason Walker. Jason has yet to come into his full powers, and in this, the Darksighted and their leader Pariah have set their sights on the destruction of the Beholder. What ensues is an action packed storyline of cat and mouse; betrayer and the betrayed; friendship and loss.

As I had said in my previous review of THE BEHOLDER, the premise and world are very reminiscent of The Matrix, a film based on the Sci-Fi novel Neuromancer by William Gibson where the characters must enter into a virtual existence between worlds; where a battle rages for supremacy and control; where a Savior has been tasked with saving the world.

The secondary and supporting roles include all of the previous storyline characters. The ‘Trinity’ of Matt, Debbie and Jason continue on their quest to ferret out the Darksighted but find themselves involved in a war not of their making. Friends will become enemies; enemies will become allies; death and destruction are a heartbeat away. Emily Ethan, the woman with whom Jason had fallen in love, is a continuing mystery as to her real intent and purpose.

The world building continues to be complex, detailed and intriguing. We follow the Beholder’s evolution; his strengths, his weakness, and his inability to stop the Pariah. There are paths to be chosen; doors to be opened; boxes never to be touched. The reader is pulled deeper into the mind of the Darksighted, the Transcendent, and the Sighted. Path of the Heretic finds our hero on a journey where what is revealed is not always easy to understand; and what he is tasked to do, is not always easy to undertake. The Lightsighted continue to be at a disadvantage throughout most of the story. Those not gifted with the ‘Sight’-the unsighted-will become pawns and victims of the war. From New York to London we are pulled into the ‘otherworld’ of virtual time and energy.

Once again, there is a theologian-feel to the storyline: a savior, the apostles, a Judas, the Pariah and a heretic-but who is the heretic, the dissenter, the nonconformer? The man in charge knows that to send Jason into the world means that sacrifices will have to be made to achieve the ultimate goal. The search for the heretic reveals many paths, and many potential enemies and friends.

PATH OF THE HERETIC is an intense, wondrous and profound storyline. Ivan Amberlake’s style of writing is imaginative, intelligent and compelling. The reader is pulled into a virtual world of energy and light; where good does not always conquer evil; where the allure of power comes in many manifestations.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date March 15, 2015

“She’s beauty for my ashes. And I’m hope for her heartache.”—Cole Danzer.

I don’t know what makes a great love story. Is it that instant attraction when boy meets girl? The passionate kisses and the fairy-tale ending? Or is it a lifetime of tragedy, paid in advance, for a few stolen moments of pure bliss? The pain and the suffering that, in the end, you can say are worth it for having found the missing piece of your soul?

The answer is: I don’t know. I don’t know what makes a great love story. I only know what makes my love story. I only know that finding Cole when I did, when Emmy and I were running from a nightmare, was the only thing that saved me. That saved us. He was more broken than I was, but somehow we took each other’s shattered pieces and made a whole. If that is what makes a great love story, if that is what makes an epic romance, then mine…ours is the greatest of them all.

•••••••••••••

REVIEW: POCKETFUL OF SAND is the latest romantic, contemporary, adult storyline from author M. Leighton. This is former pro football star Cole Danzer and single mother Eden Taylor’s storyline.

Told from alternating first person points of view (Eden and Cole) the focus of the storyline is the building relationship between two people who believe they are broken beyond repair. Both with painful, heartbreaking backstories that have all but destroyed each of their lives, our hero and heroine have struggled with haunting memories, grief and guilt.

Eden and her daughter Emmy are new to Miller’s Pond-a shy, quiet seaside town of 2000 inhabitants. On the run, Eden is determined to keep Emmy safe and protected. Meeting Cole Danzer was never in the cards but Eden is drawn to the reclusive, former football player whose heart and soul are shattered by the past. Cole wants nothing to do with relationships or love but meeting Eden gives Cole a hope for the future.

The secondary and supporting characters include some of the people from Miller’s Pond including brother and sister duo Jordan and Jason Bailey as well as a few regulars at the local restaurant and café.

We are privy to Eden and Cole’s histories through reflection and memory-each relating their experiences and nightmares about the past and the present. Eden is determined to keep Emmy safe while Cole is determined never again to lose his heart.

M. Leighton pulls the reader into an intense, emotional and heartbreaking story where the trauma of the past continues to haunt the present. POCKETFUL OF SAND is captivating, compelling and seductive; the hero and heroine are passionate, broken and tragic. When fated lovers meet, anything is possible to overcome, including that which we believe is insurmountable and lost.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date February 11, 2015

Lucy Callahan will do anything to save her sister, even if that means marrying a stranger. Even if that stranger is an undercover government agent out to destroy the cult holding her sister hostage. Even if that stranger is a . . . werewolf.

•••••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: AND JERICHO BURNED is the second installment in MJ Compton’s adult, contemporary Toke Lobo and The Pack paranormal romance series focusing on the Loup Garou wolf pack. This is caterer and human female Lucy Callahan and beta wolf shifter Stoke Smith’s storyline. Although AND JERICHO BURNED is the second book in the series, it can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty.

The premise focuses on Lucy’s need to rescue her pregnant sister from the New Sinai cult. Randy Butler, New Sinai’s self proclaimed leader has taken Michelle Callahan as his wife and is determined to add to his harem of women in the same manner as the biblical Joshua. When Lucy attempts to escape Randy’s guards while at a local concert, she will come face to face with Stoker Smith-an ATF agent and musician who claims Lucy is his mate. What ensues is the building relationship between Lucy and Stoker; the rescue attempt of Lucy’s sister Michelle, and the revelation that there are supernatural beings who inhabit the planet alongside the human population.

The relationship between Stoker and Lucy is one of immediate attraction but more so for Stoker as he is drawn to the woman whom he wants to claim and marry. In this particular series, male wolves are not sexually active or aroused until in the presence of their mate, and therefore we are front and center for Stoker’s fumbling and ill-conceived attempts to woo and seduce his mate. As a shifter male, Stoker is all about protecting his mate but it is virtually impossible when Lucy continues to search for a way to rescue her sister from a potential Waco-style massacre. Lucy is quick to accept the existence of werewolves and the soul mate connection she has with Stoker Smith but she is reluctant to obey or accept the terms of werewolf mating habits-in this there is a constant struggle between our leading couple.

The secondary and supporting characters include alpha leader Toke (Tokarz) Lobo; Restin-Toke’s second in command; Hank- a wolf whose mate and baby died in childbirth; as well as an assortment of beta, omega and delta wolves whose position in the Pack sometimes makes for some unusual situations. We are introduced to Randy Butler-the man who owns and operates New Sinai, and the man who will set out to destroy Michelle, Lucy and anyone who questions his power and commands.

There are many references to former cults including Waco, as well as references and similarities to the Jericho biblical story. Joshua Fought The Battle of Jericho is a song and theme used throughout the storyline-one that parallels the ATF and Randy Butler’s war against one another. People will die and the walls will come tumbling down.

AND JERICHO BURNED is an interesting take on shifter hierarchy, cult situations, and werewolf mating habits. The Pack is all about protecting their females and the hopes for the next generation. Most of the shifter wolves are likeable if not entertaining; there were a few issues with flow and pacing as the storyline would jump between plot points without a break or lead in but overall AND JERICHO BURNED is an enjoyable and delightful read. If you are a fan of shifter storylines, give AND JERICHO BURNED a try.

TRC: Hi MJ and welcome to The Reading Café. Congratulations on the release of AND JERICHO BURNED.

MJ: Thanks!

MJ ComptonTRC: We would like to start with some background information. Would you please tell us something about yourself?

Find MJ: Goodreads/ Twitter/ Website/ Facebook

MJ: I’m married with two adult children. I grew up in the country with legions of cousins (and aunts, uncles, and all my grandparents plus a couple of great-grandmothers). As adults, many of us are still close. I attended a small rural school. My graduating class of about 90 students has produced three published authors, something I find amazing. My junior high school English teacher called me out of the blue the other night to congratulate me. He knew publication was always my goal.

TRC: Who or what influenced your career in writing?

MJ: Reading has been a major influence on me. And for many years, I read anything. Now I’ve become more selective. I won’t finish a book I don’t enjoy. My local chapter of Romance Writers of America taught me so much. What I learned there helped me focus and hone my skills.

TRC: If you had a choice, which career, other than writing, would you like to attempt?

MJ: I would probably do something with music if I weren’t a writer. Or maybe art, because color is important to me.

TRC: Your bio states you had a 30 year career in local television. What are some of the more memorable highlights?

MJ: There are so many . . .I attended opening night ceremonies of the 1981 National Sports Festival while taping footage for the mayor’s re-election commercials. The US had boycotted the 1980 Moscow Summer Olympics, so the ’81 NSF was a big deal. I gave three-time world champion boxer Carmen Basilio a couple of black eyes–with make-up, of course–while we were taping a spot for Golden Gloves.NASCAR driver Kurt Busch–who is currently in the news–was a guest on a show I produced. I spoke with actress Jean Stapleton (of All in the Family fame) on the phone. I got to meet then-First Lady Hilary Rodham Clinton when the CBS Morning Show brought her to town for a Town Hall Meeting edition of their show (and I had dinner with Bryant Gumbel the night before). Oh, and the Secret Service broke some of the dishes in the kitchen set we used for a show I produced while they were looking for bombs. We got a lot of mileage, joke-wise, out of that one.Former co-workers include Al Roker, Mike Tirico, and David Muir.

And Jericho BurnedTRC: AND JERICHO BURNED is the second release in your Toke Lobo and the Pack paranormal romance series. Would you please tell us something about the series and premise of the book?

MJ: During the French Revolution, aristocrats weren’t the only ones to lose their lives. French werewolves were also persecuted. A contingent of them approached the U.S. Minister to France and cut a deal: we will serve your new country if you will give us sanctuary. Werewolves make great spies–superior hearing, seeing, and speed, plus the ability to change form and their inherent viciousness make them formidable foes. The secret treaty was signed and the werewolves came to the United States. Flash forward to the new millennium. The werewolves have made a nice life for themselves in the USA. My particular pack owns a brewery in Colorado (Moonsinger Beer). And the pack alpha also has a country band, Toke Lobo & the Pack. They’re getting successful, too. Things are going well until the government decides to call on them for some treaty-fulfillment work. Very few people (outside of the werewolves) know about the treaty, and it isn’t often invoked, but when it is, the werewolves take their part very seriously.

Except the guys keep running into their mates. You see, in my werewolf universe, werewolves are pre-destined for their mates and once they have found their personal one-and-only, keeping the mate safe is first priority. And since the first two books involve human females, there’s lots of conflict.

TRC: Joshua and the walled city of Jericho is a part of the theme and premise throughout the novel. What was behind your decision to use a biblical reference and song for Stoker and Lucy’s storyline?

MJ: I was pondering how the werewolves could breach a stockade fence and the story of Jericho came to me in a flash. When I re-read the story of Joshua, I found there were several interesting parallels that would work very nicely with my plot–and it gave me a title I love.

TRC: If you could virtually cast the leading characters in this storyline, which models or actors best represents your ideal image?

MJ: Country music star Tim McGraw was the visual inspiration for Stoker Smith (hero). Lucy (heroine) is a little tougher. Maybe Reese Witherspoon, with really short hair.

TRC: Do you have plans to write a storyline for Hank and Michelle?

MJ: I’ve been toying with another subplot involving Hank and Michelle. That would be in Luke Omega’s book.

TRC: How many books do you have planned for the series?

MJ: Right now, four in all.

TRC: What challenges or difficulties (research, logistics, background) did you encounter writing this particular story?

MJ: Keeping the “universe” consistent and believable was the most challenging aspect of writing And Jericho Burned. I had to keep going back to the werewolf rules I’d invented in the first book to make sure I stayed uniform. Also, keeping one of the sex scenes from bordering on a rape scene was really difficult. My editor and I went over it several times to make sure Stoker’s naivety was clear.

TRC: How do you keep the plot unpredictable without sacrificing content and believability?

Moonlight SerenadeMJ: A lot of editing. Seriously. I like to use subtle foreshadowing, so I’ll write blatant to get what I need, then I go back to erase until there is only the barest hint of what I plan to do. Lisa Gardner is a genius at unpredictability, and I study her books to see how she does it.

TRC: When writing a storyline, do the characters direct the writing or do you direct the characters?

MJ: My process involves a little bit of each. I tend to be more of an organic writer than an organized one. I try to fully flesh out the characters before I begin writing, but they often reveal things about themselves I hadn’t realized. That’s exciting. One of the most amazing things about being an author is writing something early on in the story and learning why I wrote it later on.

TRC: The mark of a good writer is to pull the reader into the storyline so that they experience the emotions along with the characters. What do you believe a writer must do to make this happen? Where do you believe writers fail in this endeavor?

MJ: I believe in the power of point-of-view, especially what authors call “deep POV.” I “become” the character as I write. I ask myself, “what would I be feeling if this happened to me–not only emotionally, but the physical manifestations as well?” If I can get those experiences onto the page, the reader can also experience them.I think some authors fail by staying on the surface of the story and not delving into the meat of emotion behind the actions. I recently read a highly-acclaimed book about life in Germany during the second World War, and I was disappointed by the lack of emotion. The facts were well-researched and the story was intriguing, but there was no emotional depth. It was a telling, not a showing (another favorite author maxim). I also find books written in first person, present tense to be on the shallow side, but that could be a personal preference on my part. Again, this is a point of view issue. However, I don’t have problems with books written in first person, past tense. One of the authors I grew up reading, Mary Stewart, wrote in first person. Her books are classics in the gothic genre.

TRC: Writer’s Block is a very real phenomenon. How do you handle the pressures and anxiety of writer’s block?

MJ: I’ve found if I just keep writing–it doesn’t have to be good or interesting or even relevant–but if I keep writing, I can write my way out of the “block” and back into the story.

TRC: What is something that few, if anybody, knows about you?

MJ: I have a weakness for “bubblegum” music.

TRC: On what are you currently working?

MJ: I’m working on a couple of projects: the next Toke Lobo & the Pack book; a series of baseball romances; and one publisher is interested in a series about lacrosse. Oh, and my critique partners and I are going to self-publish an anthology. My contribution is about a werewolf baseball player. Apparently I have a thing for men in packs/on teams.

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

MJ: Love a book? Write a review!

I had new cupcakes to bake, a new treasure to hunt, and a new dragon in town — literally. Who wouldn’t be ecstatic filling their days with chocolate, trinket collecting, and martial arts training?

Yeah … me.

Because no matter how much chocolate I ate, I couldn’t fill the dark pit in my soul. A darkness born from blood alchemy. A darkness that reeked of the black magic I now knew I was capable of creating.

Maybe it was time to walk away.

But what if there were important things left to do? What if I was the only one who could do what needed to be done?

I wasn’t sure I could handle the responsibility, but as long as I had my chocolate stash and a good friend to back me up, I was willing to give it a try.

REVIEW: And they’re off……I’m talking about Jade Godfrey and her magical friends! They are off on another adventure in SHADOWS, MAPS, and OTHER ANCIENT MAGIC by Meghan Ciana Doidge. Jade is still recovering and training with the dragons after her run in with evil sister Sierra. Jade has had a rough time figuring out her powers and Dragon side! Now, she is feeling a tad restless……. “Hell, I was so bloody boring that I couldn’t manage to be in the same room with myself for more than a few minutes without wishing someone else was around. Someone interesting. Someone with a life beyond the bakery, and plucking trinkets out of the hands of witches and sorcerers”. Jade is bored!?!?! I think she has a very exciting life, but let the new adventures begin!

Pulou, one of the nine Dragon Guardians, has a new mission for Jade and Kandy, her green-haired Shifter bodyguard. He has a map that will lead them to a relic that he desperately needs: the bad part? The map is a tattoo cut from a deceased Dragon Guardian. Yes, it’s a map on Dragonskin! Besides the ick factor, the map is hard to figure out. Good thing Jade has Kandy and another mysterious Dragon that shows up to help in the Quest. Warner is a Dragon that has been frozen for the past five hundred years. He awakens when he is needed to hunt or guard the relics. He is a Sentinel and he is a powerful Dragon to have around, he knows how to fight the shadow demons. Too bad, he has been in stasis for so long and doesn’t totally understand the world today. Jade and Kandy have a fun time teasing Warner at times! He is a Sentinel though and will have the girls back during this adventure. *waggling eyebrows*. He’s not bad to look at either, it must be a dragon thing!!

They head to Seattle first to have Wisteria Fairchild, the “CSI” witch examine the skin for any clues. Kett, the ancient vampire, is there as well and he seems to be trailing the witch?? That must be a tale for another time! They get some answers and head off to an island near Bermuda. Too bad they exit the portal in the ocean, near the island. Who knew that wolves don’t swim? It’s an action packed adventure that leads them to a temple where Sorcerers have died trying to enter. Is Jade up to the task? Kandy and Warner are essential in getting the relic, but what does this thing really do? I can’t give that part away!! Kandy needs her Pack’s assistance in the end, and Jade comes face to face with Desmond, the uber-hot Alpha. Things did not end well with them last go around and he is in fighting mode when three Dragons, Jade and Kandy show up in his front room.

Oh Jade, you are the friend that everyone wants! She is so positive, warm, resourceful and fun to be around. Her fashion sense rocks and her love of chocolate and cupcakes are endearing. Her new powers have not changed her, except she knows that she has some darkness inside of her now from the alchemy, she isn’t all sunshine and fluff. Instead of taking the blame for all the mishaps that happen now, she knows who she really is: “I was simply Jade Godfrey, half-witch, half-dragon, baker of cupcakes, treasure hunter, and warrior’s daughter. That was more than enough mantels for one person”.

You will love this latest installment of The Dowser series! The book ended on a very warm and fuzzy moment, I cannot wait to read what happens next!

If you’d asked me a week ago, I would have told you that the best cupcakes were dark chocolate with chocolate cream cheese icing, that dancing in a crowd of magic wielders — the Adept — was better than sex, and that my life was peaceful and uneventful. Just the way I liked it.

That’s what twenty-three years in the magical backwater of Vancouver will get you — a completely skewed sense of reality. Because when the dead werewolves started showing up, it all unraveled … except for the cupcake part. That’s a universal truth.

Three months ago, I lost my foster sister, Sienna, to the darkness. As in blood magic and chaos and general mayhem. No one saw it until it was too late, but I should have. Now, I have a wounded heart and soul that I can’t even reveal to anyone around me, because I’m supposed to hate Sienna with the fiery passion of the justified. And I do. I just wish I didn’t feel so lost without her, so unsure of the path I thought I had carved for myself, and so outclassed by the powerful Adepts constantly by my side these days. I’m not even sure if they’re with me for my own protection or because my shiny new powers are rare and valuable. Assuming I ever figure out who or what I am, and how my magic actually works.

Even chocolate can’t save the day every time … just most of the time. At least I’ve got that going for me.

I hadn’t set foot in the human world for more than a few hours in over three and a half months. Sure, I was stronger and faster than I’d ever been before, and I had a shiny new sword, but I was seriously chocolate deprived. I don’t recommend quitting cold turkey. And the new sword was a problem — to my mind, anyway. It represented all the expectations of a powerful father and a new otherworldly life. A life that wasn’t the one I’d worked so hard to build. It also represented the responsibility I had to bring my foster sister Sienna to … what? Justice? I didn’t know if that was even possible. What I did know was that Sienna wouldn’t stop, and that I couldn’t just leave everything up to fate and destiny … or maybe I was. Maybe I was doing exactly what I was supposed to be doing. If you believed in that sort of thing.

I just hoped that before the chaos and mayhem renewed, I’d manage to get my hands on some chocolate. It didn’t even have to be single-origin Madagascar. I was utterly prepared to lower my standards.

Even if she can complete the task in time to return home to save her daughter, there’s still one problem: she’s falling in love with a man who can’t return with her. Achieving her goals will force her to choose between the only man who has never betrayed her and a daughter she can’t quite remember but will never forget.

A heart-wrenching tale of a mother’s love for her daughter, this romantic paranormal fantasy underlines the depravity of both historical and modern society while capturing the essence of sacrifice and devotion.

Review:

Come, The Dark by Rebecca Hamilton is the 2nd book in her Forever Girl series. This can be read as a standalone, since it goes back into the past to learn more about Forever Girls. The story starts in 1961, and goes back to 1691 during the days of witchcraft and Salem.

Frankly, I wasn’t sure I would like this book, especially after I read the heroine, Rose had a child by her father. This was a different situation, as the father was possessed by the shadows of the dark, beings we learned a bit about in the first book. Rose, wants to escape her family, especially her father, and protect her child, Anna. Before long, she is whisked away to the past, where everything looks familiar. Rose is now Abilgail, and living alone in Salem is dangerous, as single women are usually suspected to be witches.

As much as this take place in Salem, it is not really a story about witches, but more like the different elementals that are either good or evil. With the evil ones possessing the humans, including those involved in the witch hunting; but it is more of a war between the different elementals; Ankou, Stigori, Cruor, Ferrum, and Malatorins. When Abigail meets William and Tess, who are the good Ankou’s, she discovers that she is Cordovae, who is now living in Abigail’s body. Cord wants to go home to find Anna, but she was sent to 1691 to help fight this war. She eventually allows William and Tess to teach her how to use her ability as an Ankou, and knows she must help them if she wants to return home.

The first third of the book was a bit difficult for me to follow, as there were too many different types of elementals, which became confusing at times. The story did get better later in, but it is also a dark twisted storyline.   The last half of the book was exciting, as it raced to a wild action packed climax. I did find the ending interesting, totally took me by surprise, but also a bit not believable. However, this is paranormal and reality is not the norm.   Rebecca Hamilton writes very well, and has a very nice imagination. Once I got past my confusion the story kept me interested all the way through to the end.

Untrue Colors by Veronica Forand – a Review

Untrue colorsAmazon / Barnes & NobleKoboBAM

But it isn’t just herself she’s worried about – if he discovers who she really is, he’ll kill her family. Professor Henry Chilton is shocked to find a beautiful stranger passed out in his bed, and even more so when she reveals a priceless painting is a forgery – the painting he’d planned to use to fund a woman’s shelter. She’s mysterious and frightened, and he is determined to discover why. Alex’s knowledge of art is undeniable—just as Henry’s attraction to her is irresistible. But in order to help him recover the real painting, Alex isn’t just risking exposure…she’s risking her life.

Review:

Untrue Colors by Veronica Forand was a great way to start a book. Alex overhears her murder !!!

Poor Alex fell for the wrong guy, and after four months of being beaten, her boyfriend decides to celebrate their anniversary with murder.  She barely escapes, and plans a new life for herself.

Finding a life for herself, Alex (now known as Gabe) still doesn’t feel safe, and with good reason, it looks like they’ve found her.

Alex lives for art, she lives and breathes it. It’s her passion and when she informs the professor that the expensive painting is a fake, then all hell breaks loose.

Now Henry isn’t a stereotypical professor – he’s a hunk, and an ex-military, he is a brilliant man and sexy, with it.  The initial meeting between Alex and Henry was amusing. And then he finds her in his bed

The attraction felt between Alex and Henry fizzed and crackled.  The action is fast paced, and well written.  The story between Alex and Henry interweaves seamlessly into a gripping suspense plot that had me unable to put it down.

I enjoyed it immensely. It’s a fast paced action read, with romance and intrigue thrown in for good measure. I managed to read it in a day, (once I opened it, I couldn’t   Put it down!!)

The secondary character Simon, is Henry’s half brother, he’s an exciting read. And I’m hoping he gets a book, as the ending of this book made me cry.

Everybody Knows Your Name by Andrea Seigel & Brent Bradshaw

Everybody Knows Your Name by Andrea Seigel  & Brent Bradshaw-Review & Giveaway

Amazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / The Book Depository / BAM

Description:
Meet Magnolia.

Her father’s dead, her boyfriend’s ditched her to commit himself more fully to surfing, and her mother’s depressed because she can’t get cast on The Real Housewives of Orange County. All Magnolia wants is to reinvent herself.

Meet Ford.

Half his family is in jail, the other half probably should be, he shoplifted his way into a job at a record store, and his brother pawned his 1953 Telecaster for a quick buck. All Ford wants is to reinvent himself.

Ford, meet Magnolia.

When the two teens are cast in Spotlight, a reality TV singing competition, both see it as their chance to start anew. With each episode, as they live together in a Hollywood Hills mansion and sing their hearts out, Ford and Magnolia fall in love. But how genuine can that love be when a television audience is watching their every move—and when their pasts are catching up them so much faster than they can run?

Review:

Magnolia and Ford are two teenagers who yearn to reinvent themselves. Though not conventional, their transformation (and relationship) is on the set of Spotlight, a reality TV singing competition in Hollywood. A precipice for amazing achievements, professional and personal, or will they get caught up in trivial pursuits leading them nowhere fast? Everybody Knows Your Name by Andrea Seigel and Brent Bradshaw was a charming, cautionary tale about discovery, hope and falling in love.

Magnolia is sick of herself. She’s not particularly sad or angry; she’s just tired of the rut she’s become.

“…but I think this show could take my head between its hands and shake it up. I want to be a little dizzy. I want to give up my old securities.”

Ford is an emancipated 17 year old who still can’t find enough independence. When he’s able to pursue his love of music on the grand scale/stage, he strikes out with a vengeance. The alternative would lead him backward to Arkansas.

But when this pair of idealists with intent to supersede expectations is constantly being monitored, told to “just be yourselves for a second”, because no one’s filming…does being true to yourself, realizing you were good from the beginning, overcome the hype? Ford and Magnolia care enough to see through the fantasy. And find the heart.

What a book! Told from a solidly PG voice through alternating POVs, I was hooked from the beginning; rushing through laundry and ironing uniforms to dive right back into the drama. Who wouldn’t be glued when you’re tapped into an authentic coming of age story that leaves remarkable impressions?! Varied background characters evoke face-palming and offer terrific insight. As an adult, there were “train wreck” moments that made me cringe since I’m quite familiar with bad judgment calls. It’s this experience, however, that had me applauding the poignancy and value these authors associated with erroneous decisions. Ford and Magnolia stumble along the way, spectacularly at times, but the lessons are learned and its effects life affirming.

I don’t know if Ms. Seigel and Mr. Bradshaw intend to develop these characters any further (it didn’t end in a cliffhanger per se, so you’re expected to infer), but Ford and Magnolia’s spark caught fire. It was a pleasure to meet such mature, wonderful people…before they even knew they already were. Bravo!

He’s just not prepared for the undeniable attraction between them. And with the two of them in one house, there’s no telling who will come out swinging…

Review:
What a Woman by Judi Fennell is the 4th book in her Manley Maids series. If you have read my earlier reviews on this series, the premise is about Mac Manley, the sister who owns Manley Maids and her winning bet with her brothers. The boys had to each spend a few weeks at a different house being a maid, but underneath it all, the grandmother plotted to make the boys find their mates. What a Woman belongs to Mac Manley, as she is pushed as a favor to her grandmother to take care of the house now being lived in my the man who was once her childhood crush, Jared Nolan.

Jared is an injured baseball ballplayer, who is also best friends with the brothers. Mac does not want to deal with Jared, since he was always nasty to her when she was a kid, which hurt her more with her school girl crush.   Now when she is forced to clean Jared’s house, and look at him, she realizes despite her dislike of him, she still feels the attraction. But Mac is determined to be distant, and ignore Jared. She will show him she is the one in charge now. Jared still thinks of Mac, as his friend’s baby sister and isn’t interested. However, as he watches her work, and how she has grown to a beautiful woman, he begins to see her in a new light. By some comments and sarcastic responses from Mac, he realizes how cruel and nasty he was to her during the early years. Determined to change, he finds a wall that will be difficult to break, as Mac will not let herself fall for Jared again.

What follows is a fun storyline, where both Mac and Jared try to keep their feelings private, and not allow their growing attraction for each other become any kind of relationship. There was a lot of humor also in this story, with the doorbell constantly ringing with the women in town who bring baked goods to the handsome baseball star trying to get his attention, which allows Mac to have the upper hand.

This was a sweet romance that built slowly, with each trying to avoid the inevitable. Jared tries to apologize for his cruel behavior as a youth, and Mac just doesn’t want to get hurt again. But the time they spend together will make it difficult, as each begins to see how much they have changed. As they succumb to their feelings, the romance becomes very hot and sizzling the pages (or ereader). Judi Fennell has done it again with another wonderful romance, and a great couple. I look forward to what comes next in her Manley Maids series.
