The Crow of Connemara by Stephen Leigh – a Review

The Crow of ConnemaraAmazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / The Book Depository / BAM

Description:
THE CROW OF CONNEMARA is a contemporary Celtic fantasy set primarily in Ireland. Picking up threads from ancient Irish mythology and folktales, this story is fantasy, drama, and tragic romance all at once, a tale caught in the dark places where the world of ancient myth intersects our own, where old ways and old beliefs struggle not to be overwhelmed by the modern world.

Colin Doyle is third generation Irish-American musician, whose interest is traditional Irish music. Maeve Gallagher is an Oileánach, an ‘Islander’ on Ireland’s west coast, outcasts treated with suspicion and disdain by the locals, who think them responsible for wild and strange happenings in the area. Colin’s and Maeve’s lives will soon intersect and intertwine. Colin will discover that Maeve has been involved with his family for far longer than seems possible, and Maeve will have to make a life-or-death choice in order to achieve what she wants for her people.

Review:

The Crow of Connemara is a contemporary Irish fantasy, with Celtic lore, and Fae mythology. This story is a romance tragedy of modern day and old time myths. Colin Doyle is our hero, who is pressured by his family to get his degree, even though his only interest is his Celtic music, and desire to go to Ireland. Colin dreams of this Irish woman, who calls to him in his visions. When his father dies, Colin decides to follow his heart and go to Ireland.

While joining other musicians playing his music in pubs, Colin with meet the woman of his dreams. Maeve Gallagher shows interest in Colin, but he finds the townsfolks do not like Maeve or her friends that live on the local island. The Oileanach’s are resented by the town, marked as outcasts, feared as witches. In a short time, Maeve and her friends are told they need to leave the island or they will be forced out.

Maeve and Colin’s relationship grows slowly, and we the reader learn quickly that Maeve is indeed more than anyone knows. This is where the fae mythology involving all the members of the island, goes into more detail as to who they are, and what is Colin needed for.

This is modern day contemporary story, with a romance that is doomed. I like Colin, but I thought that Maeve was a fascinating character. I enjoyed the mythology, and learning about them. I also love anything that takes place in Ireland.

Stephen Leigh did a wonderful job doing the world building of this story, though it was a bit slow early on as we learned more about the Oileanach and the island. It was an exciting and interesting ending, leaving me wondering if there would be another book, or we are to use our imagination.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date March 3, 2015

WHY WHISTLE IN THE DARK…

There are very few days off when you’re on an epic quest. Believe me, I know. I’m Hedi Peacock—one half Fae, the other Were—and if being a half-breed with one foot in each world isn’t tough enough to manage, there are the four chambers of my heart to consider. The one who holds the strings? Robson Trowbridge, the Alpha of Creemore. If I had my way, he and I would be locked in a bedroom, for eternity, but a pressing family matter needs my attention. It’s true what they say: A woman’s work is never done.

WHEN YOU CAN HOWL AT THE MOON?

My twin brother is being held captive by the Old Mage in another realm. Lo and behold, as soon as Trowbridge and I arrive in Merenwyn, we’re separated in spectacular, dramatic fashion—and I’m left to figure out how to maintain the fragile balance between my Fae magic and my wolf’s blood in a realm that cries to both. Not easy, particularly when I’m keeping an iron-grip on my temper so as not to dispatch with extreme prejudice the odd wizard or smart-mouthed mutt servant who crosses my path. My mama never told me there’d be days like these, but I’m not going down without a fight…or my mate.

••••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: THE DANGER OF DESTINY is the fourth (and final?) instalment in Leigh Evans Mystwalker paranormal, urban fantasy series focusing on Hedi Peacock –half fae/half Were-and all alpha female. Her continuing story finds Hedi and her alpha mate werewolf Robson Trowbridge in Merenwyn-the land of the Fae –where the Were are nothing more than vermin and prey. As this is the fourth and final instalment in the series, I would strongly suggest reading the series in order. There is a copious amount of background and history leading up to The Danger of Destiny.

Told from first person point of view (Hedi) the focus of the storyline finds Hedi and Robson returning to the ‘other realm’-the realm of the Fae known as Merenwyn- where Hedi’s twin brother Lexi has been held a virtual prisoner in both mind and body since a young boy. While Hedi returns to Merenwyn to free her brother, Robson returns to free and lead the Rahaells Were Pack to human civilization.

The relationship between Hedi and Robson continues to be loving, caring and at times combative as Hedi continues to venture along her own path. THE DANGER OF DESTINY sees our couple working together towards both individual and common goals. Hedi is part Fae ; her magic is strong combined with her Were genes and in this she is a threat to both the Fae and Weres. Hedi and her brother are considered mutts because they are neither full Fae nor full Wolf, and in this they are persona non grata on both sides of the divide. Robson, on the other hand, is in love with his mate but knows that she must complete the journey that she began months before.

The numerous secondary and supporting characters are colourful, energetic and direct a good portion of the storyline. Hedi’s tortured and misdirected brother Lexi is a character whose actions have placed him on a fine line straddling right and wrong. As a puppet for the evil Old Mage, Lexi is not always in control of his actions-in this, his ability to be redeemed is questioned by both Fae and Were.

THE DANGER OF DESTINY forwards the series but a few days from the previous installment. The storyline is awash in magic, mystwalking, Fae, Weres and a war between good and evil. There is some graphic violence but not as graphic as in previous storylines; the sex is mostly implied but the reader is aware that Hedi and Robson are deeply in love.

Leigh Evans’s style of writing is detailed, comprehensive and descriptive. She is an amazing story teller where the narration heightens the finer points of history, background information and storyline premise. Hedi’s thought and mystwalking adventures reveal plenty of detail and character history.

I had mentioned that THE DANGER OF DESTINY is the final installment in the series but I am hoping for Hedi’s brother Lexi’s story to unfold. The Mystwalker series is a series about Hedi and her search for the truth about her past, present and future but the details surrounding Lexi are limited to Hedi’s observation and what little truth has been revealed by her brother and the Old Mage. Here’s to uncovering the who, what and why of Lexi’s missing years.

Trowbridge, being wolf, likes to cuddle. And caress. Bottom line, with me he’s inexplicably tactile. It’s startling and wonderful and odd. Having spent a hug- deprived youth, I was having to relearn being held. Most of the time, I delighted in it. But here, in the spot he’d found us under a tree, I couldn’t find a comfortable position in his arms. It was still daylight— the sun was bright and hot— and even though my body was beyond tired, my mind was busy.
Despite his suggestion, I couldn’t catch forty winks on the drop of a dime.
My brain was too busy concocting a nightmare situation where I ran into a Fae or a Raha’ell and Trowbridge was unable to communicate on my behalf, being (a) suddenly mute or (b) amnesic, and/or (c) feverish and unable to do anything other than sing the entire chorus of “Baby Don’t Leave Me” in falsetto.
Up in Threall— a mist- shrouded place where the souls of the Fae hung from ancient trees like beautiful balls of light— I spoke the language. Hell, in that realm Fae bon mots just flowed from my tongue. There I was the Dorothy Parker of the Fae. But in the land of the Fae— the one place where speaking and understanding the language might prove near indispensable— I was disturbingly unilingual.
What does one say to a person who may or may not wish to kill you and/or your mate?
“Stop squirming,” said Trowbridge.
“I’m not.”
His chin scraped my temple. “Relax. I’m the wolf. Keen eyes and nose. If anything creeps up on us, I’ll know long before it gets close.”
A branch snapped deep in the woods.
His arms tightened. “It’s nothing.”
“I hate not knowing where I am.” My sense of direction had been screwed by our long detour. “Can you draw me a map? Show me where we are and where we have to go?”
“You’re going to get yourself riled up more.”
“Map.”
He allowed himself a man- sigh. “Sit up.”
I leaned forward, and he uncoiled himself with his customary grace. Trowbridge walked a few feet into the woods and came out carrying a stick. He knelt on one knee to clean the ground of pine needles and sticks. Then, my mate drew a single curved line, an artistic effort that could be interpreted as a half- moon lying on its side after a quart of tequila.
“What’s that?” I asked.
“That’s the river we’ve been following. We started about here”—he tapped the far right of the line— “and now we’re here.” The end of the stick moved along the curve all the way to the left. He filled in the interior curve of the shape with light hash marks. “All this is Fae land.”
“Just as an FYI—if we ever have treasure to bury, I’m drawing the map. There’s no scale; there’s no north and south. He etched the letter N at the top of the drawing. “Always the critic.”
“You’d get too full of yourself if I didn’t pull you down a notch. You being so beautiful and studly and all that.”
“ ‘Studly’? Is that a word?”
“It is in my dictionary.” I jerked my chin at his map. “Keep going, Picasso.”
Grime had embedded itself into his calloused knuckles. With a wry grin, he leaned forward and drew an x in the middle of the Fae territory. “Daniel’s Rock.”
I scooped up one of the twigs he’d ejected from his drawing area and used it to make two smaller x’s to the left of it. “The Two Sisters.”
“Very good.” He sketched an elongated circle.
I stared at the oval he’d drawn. “That’s the castle? Are you telling me that we landed in Merenwyn just south of the freakin’ castle? We’ve been moving away from it all this time?”
“Told you. It was necessary.” He frowned at his map, then scratched out his fi rst castle effort and redrew the shape a little north of where he’d made it. “That’s better.”
“That’s so annoying,” I said. “If the water had run a little slower, we could have crossed the river and been there hours ago. How did the Gatekeeper ford it?”
“There’s a rope bridge to the east of where we landed.”
“There’s a rope bridge?” I repeated slowly.
“Better this way,” he grunted. “No one would expect us to come at the rock from this direction.”
“You’re expecting trouble,” I said quietly.
He used the side of his hand to erase the map. “I always expect trouble. Right now, we have to focus on getting to Daniel’s Rock. There’s a lot of hoops to jump through before we start worrying about storming the castle.”
Storming the castle? I was thinking we’d be “sneaking” into the castle. He stretched, working the kinks out of his neck. “Rule of the road,” he said. “Rest when you can; hydrate when you can. I say we rest for a bit. You’re exhausted, Tink.”
“I’m not.” My empty stomach was keeping me awake.
“We’ll take a break. After the Fae shit moves off, I’ll find some more berries.”
Oh, goodie.
“Then we’ll put in a few more miles before the sun sets.” He moved back to his former position, spine braced on the back of an ancient tree, arms open, legs splayed wide for
me. “Come here.”
“I can’t nap during the day.” But I could cuddle. Yes, I could do that. I moved into the space he’d created for me. “Move, Ralph,” I told the amulet resting on my mate’s chest.
Still miffed, Ralph didn’t. Trowbridge hooked his chain with his forefinger, then tossed Ralph over his shoulder. I leaned back, telling myself to relax. Merry settled into the space between my boobs.
“Shhh,” Trowbridge breathed in my ear. His fIngers began working into the knot between my shoulders. His scent curled around me, another set of arms, and licked away my tension.
It was comforting.
I’ll still never sleep.
It was my last conscious thought before I slipped into the land of Nod.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date December 2012

Meet Hedi Peacock. She’s half Fae. Half Were. And all trouble…

I Have Two Words For Werewolves:

My name is Hedi Peacock and I have a secret. I’m not human, and I have the pointy Fae ears and Were inner-bitch to prove it. As fairy tales go, my childhood was damn near perfect, all fur and magic until a werewolf killed my father and the Fae executed my mother. I’ve never forgiven either side. Especially Robson Trowbridge. He was a part-time werewolf, a full-time bastard, and the first and only boy I ever loved. That is, until he became the prime suspect in my father’s death…

Bite Me.

Today I’m a half-breed barista working at a fancy coffee house, living with my loopy Aunt Lou and a temperamental amulet named Merry, and wondering where in the world I’m going in life. A pretty normal existence, considering. But when a pack of Weres decides to kidnap my aunt and force me to steal another amulet, the only one who can help me is the last person I ever thought I’d turn to: Robson Trowbridge. And he’s as annoyingly beautiful as I remember. That’s the trouble with fate: Sometimes it barks. Other times it bites. And the rest of the time it just breaks your heart. Again…

THE HEART IS A LONELY HUNTER

In the never-ending saga that is my love-hate relationship with Robson Trowbridge, I, half-Were Hedi Peacock, have had a change of heart. Ever since I shoved Trowbridge through the Gates of Merenwyn, I’ve been the leader of the pack—hard to believe, right? The thing is: I’m half-Fae. So even though my Were side is ready to heed the call of the wild, the other part of me is desperate to take flight. And much as it pains me to admit it, life without Trowbridge is really starting to were me down…

I AM WERE, HEAR ME ROAR.

To make matters worse, the wolves of Creemore want my blood—and the North American Council of Weres wants me dead. So I’m just counting the days until Trowbridge returns from the other realm…and comes to my brave rescue…and becomes my alpha mate. Wishful thinking? Of course it is. But given all the mess I’ve been through already, what’s the harm in doing a little bit of daisy-plucking? Besides, Trowbridge owes me bigtime. A girl can dream.

NEVER MAKE A PROMISE…

Robson Trowbridge, the Alpha of Creemore and my gorgeous mate, tries to protect me, Hedi Peacock, half-Fae, half-were, from all the trouble I get into. The thing is, my past is pretty messy and bad guys keep knocking down my door. Witches, thug bikers, the North American Council of Weres, dark magic Fae, and even an evil wizard are all after me. The Old Mage is the only one I really care about: He has my dear twin brother captive on the other side of the Gates of Merenwyn—not cool. So my alpha love is helping me to keep my promise to free my brother…

YOU CAN’T AFFORD TO KEEP.

Unfortunately, everyone who helps me ends up in a heap of trouble too—including my Trowbridge. Now, I admit I’ve had my moments as a shivering coward, hoping he will come to my brave rescue. The whole Prince Charming thing is hard to shake. But these bad guys after me mean business and those damsel in distress days are over. You know that “last straw” metaphor? That was two straws ago. It’s now or never. Again…

He’ll do whatever it takes to get her to trust him with her body and her heart.

An old threat whose time has come…

Staying hidden kept Maddie safe, but the search for justice will bring her into the open and face-to-face with her treacherous past. Risking her life is one thing, but risking her heart is another. In love and in danger, she must trust Jack to lead her—and pray they both come out alive.

 Review:

Trust Me by Ella Sheridan is the second book in her Southern Nights series.  You do not have to read the first one, as they do stand alone very well.  But as there are characters from the first book, it may be handy.

Poor Maddy, after escaping from an abusive relationship, she spends the next four years on the run. But don’t be fooled into thinking she is weak, she is a fighter, literally. She knows how to take care of herself, and in doing so, only relies on herself, trusting anyone is not an option. She keeps her guard up to protect her secrets, and her life.

We met Jack in the first book, so in this book we go into more details about him.

As soon as Jack sets eyes on Maddie, he knows something is different about her. Once he finds out all her secrets and who she’s running from, he must get Maddie to trust him, to make her believe that he’ll protect her, with is life if need be. Both for Maddie’s sake and for his own. Can he win that trust?

Once I got into this book, I could not put it down.  Once the story gets going, Trust Me is full of suspense, and had me eagerly turning the next page.  It even managed to shock me once or twice when the villains were revealed.  Just like with the first book, It keeps you immersed in their world.

I recommend you to read this book, as you won’t be disappointed.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date February 23, 2015

While patrolling the jungles of Guatemala, Marine Garrett “Honey” Bloom found his life changed forever after an explosion, the blast leaving him with the strange supernatural ability to shape-shift into a bear. When a clandestine operative with many secrets offers him an irresistible job offer with his agency, Garrett finds his place in this organization where the rich go for protection and to have their problems solved.

Ruby Rose McDermott, daughter of an oil tycoon, is in need of protection after just barely escaping a kidnapping attempt. When her billionaire father enlists help to find and “handle” the kidnappers, Garrett is tasked with the job of keeping Ruby safe.

Expecting a spoiled, egocentric brat, Garrett is shocked to meet the shy, down-to-earth Ruby. The attraction between them quickly grows, but they soon come to realize they come from different worlds and their romance will be short lived.

An explosive event reveals Ruby’s true kidnapper, turning their world upside down and exposing them to surprising danger. If Garrett and Ruby survive, can they find a way for their worlds to mesh in harmony?

••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: THE WAY YOU ARE is the third installment in Carly Fall’s adult, contemporary Supernatural Renegades paranormal romance series focusing on a group of former Marines whose lives changed forever following a blast in the Guatemalan jungle. Each member of the platoon has been ‘gifted’ with a supernatural power but the government wants complete silence from the men involved. This is mission leader Garrett ‘Honey’ Bloom and Ruby Rose McDermott’s storyline. When Ruby becomes the target of an attempted abduction, Ruby’s billionaire father calls in help from a specialized source. THE WAY YOU ARE can be read as a stand alone without any problems.

SOME BACKGROUND: The focus of the series follows each Marine as he returns home to a different world. The military demands complete silence and secrecy from each of the returnees otherwise termination –from life-is next on the horizon. Life will become too difficult and lonely when the government orders complete compliance resulting in paranoia, and emotional and physical stress for each of our survivors

Told from third person point of view, the storyline follows Ruby and Garrett’s building relationship. Garrett has been tasked as Ruby’s bodyguard and protector in a secret location in Flagstaff, Arizona. What ensues is an unquestionable sexual attraction between two people who couldn’t be more different. Ruby will discover that Garrett has the ability to shift into a bear, which will come in handy when another attempt is made on Ruby’s life.

The relationship between our couple is one of instant attraction but Garrett’s preconceived notions about spoiled, little rich girls leaves a lingering doubt when they are first introduced. Zach, another ‘supernaturally enhanced’ marine is along for the ride and reminds Garrett that not everything is at it seems. Zach has the ability to see the future but Zach’s powers have come at a cost.

The supporting and secondary characters include Garrett’s former Marine buddy Zach; Ruby’s parents; and Ruby’s brother John. We are also re-introduced to Mr. Joe Smith, the man who owns and operates a special ‘security’ firm for high end clientele; and Joe’s trusted assistant Thomas. A little bit more about Joe’s history is revealed and the reasons he has taken it upon himself to aid the men in Garrett’s platoon.

The world building continues to follow the Marines as they try to reintegrate themselves back into civilian life-but life as they know it has changed. Mr. Joe Smith is the man who will see that each Marine will find a place in his firm and the truth about what happen may finally be revealed.

Carly Fall’s storylines resonate with love, compassion, and heart. There is a little bit of supernatural blended into a contemporary storyline that allows for an escape into a fantasy world of shifters and psychic powers. THE WAY YOU ARE is a fascinating story of family, betrayal, finding love and moving on. I am looking forward to Zach’s storyline-next.

“Can I ask you a question?” His voice sounded barely above a whisper.
She nodded, unable to speak, her breath caught in her throat.
“Have you ever wanted something so bad, but knew you shouldn’t?”
She shrugged, thinking the only thing she had ever really longed for was independence from her family. All of her other needs and wants had been met without any effort on her part. “I don’t know.”
“Well, let’s say you did. Would you try to take it even if you shouldn’t?”
She cleared her throat, unsure of where the conversation was going. “If I did, would I be breaking any rules? Would I go to jail?”
He grinned. “No jail time, but maybe bending some work and personal rules.”
“I guess it would depend on how bad I want it. If the reward outweighed the consequences, then yes, I would take it.”
Garrett nodded and leaned forward, placing his hand behind her neck, threading his fingers through her hair. His lips lightly brushed hers, and he whispered, “I think the tradeoff will be worth it.”
His mouth claimed hers, his tongue urging her lips to part as her head spun. What in the world was going on? The big, bad, drop-dead-gorgeous Marine wanted to kiss her?
Apparently so.
Her mind reeled with the consequences of their actions. Certainly, there had to be rules established by Joe he was breaking, and what about her feelings, her delicate ego? What did he want from her?
She acquiesced and parted her mouth, their tongues engaging in a slow dance. Sighing, she let go of all her questions, fears, and doubts, shut her eyes and laced her arms around his neck, giving herself over to the experience. Her whole body shuddered as he pulled her closer.
He tasted of mint and coffee, and she explored the hard planes of his shoulders and biceps as they embraced, their kiss quickly heating. Gently, he laid her in the snow and stretched out next to her. He took her hands in his right and pulled them up above her head, holding them there. As their tongues dueled, she quivered at his touch, his hand running down her ribcage, to her hip and over her thigh. She moaned as desire bloomed in her belly, her need for him exploding within her.
Gently, he kneaded her breast through her sweatshirt as he peppered her face with slow kisses. Despite lying in the snow, her body heated further, and she wouldn’t have been surprised if she opened her eyes to see the snow around them had melted.
He let go of her hands, and she immediately touched his chest, feeling the warmth of chiseled muscle beneath his turtleneck.
“Holy hell, Ruby,” he whispered against her mouth. “I’ve wanted this since the second I laid my eyes on you, and it’s even better than I’d imagined.”

But due to a painful past, the British expat has never put her own name on the list. Instead, she limits herself to emotionless and commitment-free hookups. Then she meets Daniel, who wants not just her body, but also her heart…

Daniel Logan hides the soul of a poet under the suit and tie of an FBI agent. Specializing in financial crimes, he pieces together stories of greed and ensures justice is done. He plays by the rules—until he meets Tilda. He’s drawn in by her passion as well as her mysteriousness. Daniel knows that no matter her secrets, he’s the perfect match for Tilda. But even pleasure doesn’t come with a guarantee…

•••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: THE LIST is a contemporary, adult storyline that follows a year in the life of FBI agent Daniel Logan and stationery shop owner Matilda Davies. THE LIST is a story of romance, learning to love, and forgiving oneself for the sins of the past.

Told from third person point of view, alternating between the present and the recent past, THE LIST focuses on the unexpected and unlikely relationship between Tilda and Daniel, and Tilda’s need to hold on to the past.

Tilda is a bit of a matchmaker whose successful unions have left a pleasant but envious mark upon our heroine’s soul. Tilda is an enigma to others and to herself. Her relationship with Daniel is quick to develop; she is a sexually passionate woman yet comes across uncaring, withdrawn, self absorbed and without emotion; and she is vulnerable to her past. Her bond with Daniel is tentative and fragile; her need to succeed and be noticed is all encompassing. Saying that, her likability as a heroine is provisional upon the outcome of the story-I found it difficult to understand Daniel’s attraction and connection to Matilda Davies.

The relationship between our leading couple is highly sexual, provocative and intense but herein lies the issue-Daniel and Tilda have nothing in common but a deep desire to be needed and belong. Their love story is often painful, intimate and moving but is built upon a shaky foundation-a happily ever after is not always a guarantee. Daniel, on the other hand, is an amazing man who supports and nurtures Tilda through her numerous levels of self absorption and emotional withdrawal-it is almost a codependent relationship. Tilda outwardly appears strong and self assured but inside something is missing and the little girl, she once was, is still waiting for recognition and love.

Throughout the novel I found myself at odds with my enjoyment due to the heroine’s underwhelming and less than welcoming persona; the narrative was, at times, unusually dry and subdued, and I, once again, blame the heroine’s lack of empathy and emotional range throughout much of the story. Tilda hides behind a façade; a mask of her own making but in doing so hides away from herself.

THE LIST is an interesting and well written storyline but I think it fell short in its’ ability to draw me in. Perhaps it was the author’s writing style or the method used to convey the overall mood. If there was ever a metaphor for their relationship-Daniel was first introduced to Tilda as they sat upon a ledge, twenty one stories above the ground; on the precipice of life and death; the past, the present, and the future; on the edge of an abyss going nowhere-fast.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date March 3, 2015

You don’t know when…
You don’t get to choose if…
When it’s time to join…you’ll know.

You might think you want to be a member—but trust me this is one club you don’t want to join. It’s not a place where people go to live out their deepest, darkest sexual desires—there are no handcuffs or blindfolds.

The 27 Club only admits those who die young and tragically. My brother was recently bestowed membership and joined many of our ancestors before him. I know I’m next. This is my destiny, and I was ready to yield.

But then I met Nate. He awakened a sensuality in me that had never been explored, never satisfied. I knew then I could no longer accept my destiny. Nate’s presence controls me. I’m overwhelmed by his touch, his words; my every thought is consumed by desire. I believe he was brought into my life for a reason.

Nate doesn’t believe in destiny.

But I do.

And if there’s a way to cheat it—I must.

••••••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: THE 27 CLUB is the latest adult, contemporary, erotic romance, stand alone novel from author Kim Karr. The focus of the storyline is the Flower family destiny-a curse to die in your twenty seventh year. This is Zoey Flowers and Nathaniel Hanson’s storyline.

According to the online dictionary destiny is the hidden power believed to control what will happen in the future; one’s fate; one’s fortune; or one’s doom.

Predestination is the belief that everything that will happen has already been decided by God or fate and cannot be changed.

Do you believe in destiny? That your future has been predetermined by a higher power and nothing can or will stop the events from happening? THE 27 CLUB is a story of one family who believe.

Told from first person point of view (Zoey) with a couple of chapters from Zach and Nate, the storyline follows college professor Zoey Flowers and her older brother and artist Zach -a close knit brother and sister duo-who believe their destiny is to die before their twenty eighth year.

The storyline prologue begins with the introduction of Zach on his twenty seventh birthday: his fear of joining The 27 Club as many of his ancestors had previously done but also his need to ‘live like you’re dying;’ in the here and now. When Zach dies approximately nine months later, Zoey heads to Florida to uncover the truth about his life, his death and the people he left behind including his best friend Nate Hanson. What ensues is a building relationship between Zoey and Nate, and Zoey’s discovery that what she thought she knew about her brother was all a lie. Zoey’s journey will follow a path unlike anything she could have imagined. With her twenty seventh birthday having come and gone, Zoey is preparing for her destiny-one day and one wish at a time.

The attraction between Zoey and Nate is immediate but one forbidden by a promise. Zach had never wanted to introduce his sister to Nate knowing that Nate would probably break Zoey’s heart. Zoey and Nate’s relationship is one of passion, forbidden love and mutual understanding as they comfort one another in the wake of Zach’s sudden death. There is no promise for the future; no strings attached; there is an unknown expiration date on their love. The $ex scenes are intense, seductive and intimate with a little bit of kink on the side.

The secondary and supporting characters include Gisele and her son Mateo; Nate’s ailing father; their housekeeper Rosie; and several business associates of Zach and Nate’s who reveal more to Zoey than she could have possibly surmised. Zach led a secret life; a life that is never completely revealed to its fullest extent and in this the missing background information makes for some curious assumptions. I would like to have read more about Zach-the who, the what and the why-but we all know there is no happily ever after for Zach!

Nate’s business ventures are another part of the premise that never completely materialized. There are hints, admissions, and revelations but no depth into the reality, his connections or how it came to be. Zoey will uncover her brother’s secrets that tie closely to Nate’s business, but we never learn or understand why.

The world building takes the reader into the nightlife of Miami, the secret clubs, the art world and the people Zach, Nate and Zoey encounter in their lives. There are moments of heartbreak, surprise and shock countered by the realization that we truly do not know about the people in our lives. Life is fleeting; the future is not guaranteed. Live life to the fullest; dance like no one is watching!

Kim Karr is a brilliant writer who will keep you on the edge of your seat waiting for destiny to take another life but there is so much information missing and not revealed that I was left wondering where it all began. I am hoping Kim puts pen to paper and writes a prequel that will address the incomplete nature of Zach and Nate’s backstory and history.

excerpt

The wind howls and the palm trees whip against the windows as the storm seems to make its way closer to landfall. Thunder booms and lightning lights up the room, startling me. No, not lightning—a lamp.
“Hello, Zoey.” The voice is deep and husky.
As the sound registers, I scream. I quickly sit up and scan my unfamiliar surroundings. My eyes immediately land on the silhouette of a man standing beside me, and I scream again, this time scrambling off the bed in terror. In this moment, my heart stops beating, my lungs stop breathing, and my brain stops thinking. I’m petrified. The man raises his palms up in surrender. “Zoey, I’m Nate, Z’s friend. You don’t have to be scared. I’m not going to hurt you.”
My fear must be evident. I stare at him for a few long moments, both alarmed and trembling. Only once realization sets in, that yes, this is Nate, my brother’s best friend, do I attempt to calm my ragged breaths.

He takes a cautious step back. “Just cover up with something so we can talk.”

Oh my God, my clothes.

Tangled sheets catch on my limbs as I climb back onto the bed and unsuccessfully try to pull the covers over my practically naked body. Before humiliation grabs complete hold of me, I give up and dive for my soaking wet shirt lying on the floor.

Sliding the cold fabric over my head, I pull it down to cover my panties and stand up, quickly crossing my arms over my chest to shield any signs of the chill I’m feeling.

Not great, but better. At least I can look at him with a little dignity.

Finally, I glance up and my gaze catches his. As soon as it does, he drops his eyes.

The photos I’ve seen of him over the years, when my brother would text me a funny shot—a selfie of him and Nate at some top chef restaurant, at the beach, or at a coffee house—didn’t nearly do him justice. Those shots were goofy poses with baseball caps turned backwards and funny faces. Not that I didn’t think he was good looking in them, because I did, but there’s just something different about him.

I blink and focus on the matter at hand. “You scared the shit out of me. What are you doing here?”

Staring at the ground, he leans against the door jam. “You beat me to the punch. I was just about to ask you the same question.”

“Why would you ask me that?”

He raises a brow. “I guess I’m just curious.”

I sigh, feeling confused.

His gaze lifts, and those eyes, those bewitching emerald green eyes, stare back at me. “Not that I mind that you’re here. It’s just—a little warning would have been nice. That’s all.”

His tone is more bemused than apologetic.

I’m not sure what to think.

With a straight and confident stance, I clear my throat. “I e-mailed you earlier today to let you know that I was coming for the weekend. I’m really sorry about the late notice, but I decided at the last minute.”

He reaches into the pocket of his low-slung jeans and pulls out his phone. After a few taps and scrolls he looks up at me. “I guess you did. Here it is. I’m usually on top of my e-mails but today my . . . schedule was full. Had I seen your message, I would have tried to rearrange my plans.”

“That’s fine really. I managed. It’s not a big deal.”

I steal a glance at my reliable Timex—just after midnight. What is he doing in my brother’s house in the middle of the night? Just as I’m about to ask him, my eyes catch sight of the way he predatorily walks around the room and I’m momentarily distracted. He moves like a panther— slowly circling his prey, keeping his distance, not too close, but close enough to pounce if he feels the urge. He settles back against the wall, just a little closer now. “Zoey, did you hear me?”

I swallow. “Sorry, what?”

His tone grows more insistent. “I said I would have at least sent a car for you. You shouldn’t be out in this weather on your own.”

My brow furrows. Why is he still talking about the airport?

When I don’t respond, he crosses his arms over his chest like he owns the place.

It’s then that reality sinks in. And as cliché as this sounds, I am not going to let Mr. Tall, Dark, and Handsome intimidate me. It’s time to take charge. “There was no need. I managed just fine. But if you didn’t know I was coming, can I ask what you’re doing here?”

Confusion seems to have taken over his thoughts as he steps even closer—moving with a lethal grace that makes my body start to hum. I can’t help but study him as his features come into clear focus. His body is long and lean. His hair is dark, the most unusual shade of brown, maybe like the color of expensive chocolate, but not exactly. His eyes are languid, watchful, and the most beautiful shade I’ve ever seen—darker than emeralds or the deepest of forest greens. His
lips look full and soft. He is handsome in a way that is unlike anyone I’ve ever seen.

My mind is going haywire.

A look of realization seems to cross his face as he stares at me.

“Nate, why are you at my brother’s house in the middle of the night?” I ask him again.

With a smirk, he ignores my question. Instead of answering me, he opens the door beside him. It’s a closet, Zach’s closet to be exact, and he steps right in, again like he owns the place.

“What are you doing?” I ask impatiently.

He comes back into the bedroom with a pair of sweatpants and a T-shirt in his hand. “You’re trembling. How about you get changed and we sit down to talk?”

The audacity of this man is beyond comprehension. From his e-mails he seemed nice, but then again, you never can tell what lurks behind the words on a computer screen.

He stares and his small smirk really irritates me. “Take these, they’re mine. I’ll wait downstairs while you get changed.”

If I weren’t standing here, chilled and in my underwear, I might just tell him to go to hell. But instead I reach for the clothes, and as I do, I start to wonder if he’s been squatting in my brother’s house. Once the clothes are in my hands, his mouth spreads into a slow, easy grin.

Annoyance grabs hold of me as I pivot on my bare feet and head toward the bathroom, making sure not to glance over my shoulder. When I hear heavy footsteps, I let my body fall back and shut everything out of my mind for a few short seconds.

What is going on?

When I’ve gathered my composure, I quickly strip out of my wet clothes and redress. Then I make the mistake of looking in the mirror. A wet dog would look better than I do right now. In an effort to improve the image, I grab a towel and wipe the black mascara from under my eyes. Then I use my fingers to comb through my mass of curls and try to calm them, but that’s nearly impossible.

Okay, better—but not great.

Who cares anyway?

It’s not like I’m trying to impress him. In fact, I’ve never tried to impress a man.

Ever.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date March 2, 2015

Has Max, the bad boy of the art world been tamed just as his girlfriend, Ava’s star begins to shine? Anything can happen in Los Angeles, a world where heroes become villains and the rogue saves the day.

An unexpected plane ticket leads our heroine to a meeting that will change her life.

What happens when what’s most precious to you slips out of your grasp? How fiercely will you fight for the one you love?

Join Max and Ava for the dramatic and passionate conclusion to the Work of Art trilogy.

••••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: THE MASTERPIECE is the third and final installment in Ruth Clampett’s adult, contemporary Work of Art romance series focusing on troubled and tormented L.A. artist Max Caswell and art graduate/writer Ava Jacobs. Because THE MASTERPIECE is the final installment in the three part trilogy the novel should not be read as a stand alone: too much backstory and history is missing to enable a complete understanding of the premise.

The focus of THE MASTERPIECE finds our couple at a crossroads. Ava has been offered a prestigious position in New York and Max’s emotional sanity is unable to handle the potential separation and threat to their relationship. Max has never handled the New York lifestyle very well and in this he sees only darkness at the end of the day. As our couple try to get a handle on what it is they both want, Max’s past comes back with a vengeance letting them both know that there will be no stopping until she gets what she wants-and she wants Max back in her life. Betrayal, jealousy and resentment are the leading factors in Max’s continuous emotional spiral.

Max is a man so possessed by his need for Ava that even the slightest hint of acknowledgement from other men sets our hero on a crash course straight to h*ll. Max is a tortured soul, whose demons are dark, and ride too close to the surface; there are many times when Max loses control and everyone suffers from the resulting meltdown. His need to run is always a moment away; his fragile self esteem is in constant need of reaffirmation and reassurance that the woman whom he loves, loves him in return. Their relationship is intense, passionate, destructive and profound. Max’s impassioned and emotional personality would suck the life out of most people within a matter of days. His responses are extreme, angst ridden and full of self doubt.

Ruth Clampett spotlights the dysfunctional and emotional behavior of an artiste whose life is centered on perfection in an imperfect world. The hero’s intense, enigmatic and dark psyche is in complete contrast beautiful and moving images he paints and explores. If one could paint with pain, the images would bleed from the mind and the soul.

The epilogue fast forwards the storyline and series approximately seven years where we get a glimpse into the future; Max and Ava’s life; and the life of the people they hold close to their hearts.

THE MASTERPIECE and the Work of Art is a phenomenal series; a psychological nightmare of one man’s obsession with his art and the woman that he loves; the demons from his past; the darkness that controls his mind. Ruth Clampett’s style of writing is seductive, dramatic and a little bit addicting. You are always on the edge of your seat wondering what her characters are going to do next. Her characters are brilliantly written; compelling; and not without many faults and failings.

I wonder if my silence and twirling mind spook Max, so I stroke
his hand reassuringly. Because I’m beyond exhausted when we step in
the house, he seems unsure of what to say or do. He decides to feed
me, and he heats up the leftover pasta from his dinner and pours me a
glass of Pinot Noir. We sit at the kitchen island, and he watches me eat
as if each bite is his own. I lick my lips and watch him watch me, too
exhausted to make much conversation.
After dinner, I shower and crawl into bed, still damp and disoriented.
He pulls me into his arms and rubs my back gently. I’m so in
love and happy to be back home with him, and I tell him that in quiet
mumbles. I have a vague memory of my knee hitched up against his
erection, but sleep takes me hard.
The next morning dawns in a gray quiet light, and I lift my head
and see a thick blanket of fog draped across the Malibu horizon. I settle
back into the bed and watch Max as his chest rises and falls with each
breath.
I observe him for a long while and become overwhelmed with the
desire to see more of him. I slide the sheet off, excruciatingly slowly, to
reveal his incredible body. His thighs…God, I love his strong thighs
and the way they’re slightly parted, leading my view to his beautiful ass.
My insides curl with desire as I skim my hand down his back.
I’m glad to be naked and warm, my arousal spreading through me.
I want him so much that it takes everything not to shake him awake
and seduce him.
I quietly lift myself up to my knees so I can study him from another
angle. I gently push his waves of hair off his forehead.
Inexplicably, tears fill my eyes and I still for a moment. I love this
man, and when we’re joined together, all I know in life is the depth of
my passion. I kiss his neck, his taste and the Max smell of musk, paint,
and salt air arousing me further. He stirs out of the deepest sleep, and
as I kiss his jaw, his eyes slowly open.
“I thought I was dreaming and didn’t want to wake up. What are
you doing to me, Angel?” he says in his morning voice, as he rolls over
to his back.
“Good morning, handsome. Sorry to wake you, but I woke up and
you’re naked and all…”
“It’s okay,” he says, smiling lazily as he reaches for me. “I take it you
missed me.”
“You have no idea,” I say, as I straddle him, resting lightly on his
thighs.
There’s something so intoxicating about how he makes me feel as
he looks at me. His eyes are wide now and alert to my movements. He
skims his fingers up my sides and then across my breasts, his thumbs
circling my nipples.
“Max, I want you so much,” I whisper, as I gently run my fingers up
and down his length.
His face colors and his jaw flexes as he watches me touch him. He’s
completely hard now, and my fingers tighten as I stroke him.
His hands slide back to my hips and he pulls me closer so I can lift
up and sink down on him.
I love it when he’s all the way inside me. His eyes close and his head
tips back before he lazily begins to rock his hips.
We move slowly in the morning light with the sound and rhythm
of our breath and the waves crashing just beyond.
I gaze at him as the intensity builds. His eyes are stormy as his body
tenses.
“Max,” I whisper.
He takes a sharp breath as he pulls me to him. “I’ve got you, Ava.”
His words spark a fuse, and I tremble with exquisite pleasure as
he watches me. Every hard thrust is the very definition of masculine
energy as he brings me to climax and soon after joins me with a quiet
roar.
We both settle and try to catch our breath. I ease off of him and curl
into his side.
“Round one,” he says, as he nuzzles and kisses me.
“Yeah, wait until we have our coffee. I’m already imagining round
two, but I’ll definitely need breakfast first.” I settle back into the sheets
and we lie quietly, listening to the waves break along the shore.
My limbs are loose and happy and my head as clear as the early
morning beach. Max’s eyes are deep in concentration.
“I can hear your wheels turning. What are you thinking about?” I
trace circles lightly with my fingertips across his chest.
“Your birthday.” He grins and pulls me closer.
“Oh, it’s next Saturday, isn’t it? Can we do something special?” I’m
like a little girl, complete with party hat and balloon.
“It’s already planned.”
I grin widely. “Really? What are we going to do?”
“I’m not telling. It’s a surprise. But when you come to spend the
night Friday, bring your swimsuit and something nice to wear.”
“Oh, I love birthday surprises!”
He kisses me on the forehead. “I’m glad, because this one’s special.”
