by Juliana Stone
Genre: adult, contemporary, romance

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / B&N / KOBO /

About the book: Release Date February 18, 2015

Maverick Simon lost his mojo somewhere between the last film he scored and a nasty break-up with one of Hollywood’s elite. Burnt out, a vacation is just what this California boy needs. His brother’s empty house in Maine offers the perfect sanctuary. But plans go awry when he meets a woman who rocks his world in more ways than one. She’s not his usual type—she’s edgy, opinionated, and downright rude. But something about the prickly Charlie Samuels sparks his interest. Maverick must decide if that something is exactly what he needs, or if the smokin’ hot chemistry they share is nothing more than a vacation fling…

Charlie Samuels had always dreamed of leaving her small New England town for something bigger. But that dream disappeared the day her father died, leaving her to raise her younger brother and keep the family business afloat. Now a mechanic, she’s knee deep in grease and oil, and with a pile of bills to pay, has no time for someone like Maverick Simon—a guy who’s just passing through. She can’t deny the tall, brooding, sexy-as-sin, Maverick, causes her pulse to race, but she knows that he’s way out of her league. So why is she contemplating an affair? Especially when she knows that Maverick Simon could cost her more than she’s willing to give, namely, her heart…

•••••••••••••••

REVIEW: MAVERICK is the third installment in Juliana Stone’s adult, contemporary The Family Simon romance series focusing on the Simon Family. This is music composer and writer Maverick Simon, and mechanic Charlotte (Charlie) Samuels’s storyline. MAVERICK can be read as a stand alone without too much difficulty but some of the previous storyline scenarios are beginning to cross between installments.

Told from third person perspective, the storyline focuses on Maverick ‘Rick’ Simon as he takes some personal time at his brother’s place in Fisherman’s Landing, Maine. While his best friend and music partner Donovan James-Simon (JACK books 2) and husband Jack Simon await the birth of their first child, Rick finds solace in the winter solitude of Maine. Hoping to find someone to fix his brother’s wayward snowmobile, Rick will be introduced to Charlie Samuels-the town’s only female mechanic-and the woman who would steal Maverick’s heart.

MAVERICK is an ensemble storyline with many of the Simon family siblings and cousins front and center in the family business- a family that closely resembles the Kennedys including the political elite, the rich and famous, the superstars and military heroes. Maverick is a song writer whose hit a road block, of sorts, and finding Charlie Samuels has lifted the block and lightened his heart. But like all ‘Kennedy’ style families, tragedy will befall the Simon Clan, and Rick finds himself torn between what he knows he must do and where he wants to remain. Rick’s cousin Teague deserves his happily ever after, but getting there will be even more dramatic and intense than previous storylines.

The relationship between Charlie and Maverick is one of immediate attraction but Charlie is a woman whose has responsibilities beyond her business-since the death of her father, Charlie has been raising her younger brother Connor, and in this, his safety and protection are her first concerns. The $ex scenes are intimate, romantic and compelling without the over stimulation of erotic graphic imagery. Charlie believes that Rick is only a temporary fixture in her life, and both her and Connor may not survive the heartbreak when Rick returns to his career in California.

MAVERICK is another emotional and moving storyline of family and love. The characters are engaging, colorful and charismatic; the storyline is enjoyable, passionate and encouraging. There are no hidden demons or exes making life miserable but Rick keeps his true identity a secret far longer than he should have.

And yet she can’t help but wonder if a second shot together just might be the game changer she needs. Or if old secrets can still ruin the only man she’s ever loved…

••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: JACK is the second installment in Juliana Stone’s adult, contemporary The Family Stone romance series focusing on The Family Simon-a spinoff from Juliana’s The Barker Triplets series. This is political candidate and golden boy Jack Simon, and singing sensation Donovan James’s storyline. JACK can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty.

Told from third person perspective, the focus of the storyline is the rekindling of the relationship between Jack and Donovan. Five years earlier, after a heated argument, Donovan walked out of Jack’s life without explanation or reason. In the ensuing time, our couple saw one another once leading the paparazzi to speculate that America’s glamor couple were back on. But Jack despises the very ground upon which Donovan walks, and Donovan knew that to attempt any reconciliation with Jack would mean death to both of their careers.

Jack ‘s character has some issues with forgiveness and letting go of the past. His hurtful words and actions border dangerously on emotional abuse and in this I took issue with behavior. Donovan has never stopped loving Jack and walking away was the only thing she could do to save both of their careers. Although Jack is not aware of the circumstances, his attitude left something to be desired.

The relationship between Donovan and Jack is angry, hurt-filled and volatile. Jack has never forgiven Donovan for walking away, and Donovan has not been able to reveal the truth about what happened years before. Our couple will find themselves on a secluded island in Belize, where it is hoped, by well meaning but interfering family members that Jack and Donovan will get back together. The $ex scenes were limited, as our couple struggled with their relationship throughout most of the story but there was definite sexual chemistry and tension.

The engaging, colorful and energetic supporting characters include most of the Simon siblings, cousins as well as a cameo by the Simon family elders Noah and Eden. We are introduced to Jacks’ nosey but enlightened neighbor as well as Simon’s best friend Derek whose intentions are questionable, at best. The Simon family reminds me a little of the Kennedy Clan-similar numbers, fame and family issues. I did have one concern-it is never revealed who leaked the background story, and in this, we never learn who was responsible or if anyone has paid for their ‘crimes’.

JACK is an emotional second chance storyline; a story of betrayal and friendship; love and understanding; acceptance and letting go. JACK is also a story about family differences and different families. Juliana Stone writes a passionate and emotional storyline that will have you reaching for the tissues.

FREE ebook: Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / B&N / KOBO /

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date January 15, 2014

When all hope is gone, can love still find a way?

Tucker Simon has given up on love. After a tragedy, it’s just not in the cards for him, and he wishes his family would get off his back. He’s fine—or at least he thought he was–until a family wedding forces him to address a few things, namely his date, Abby Mathews. She’s been put in the ‘friend’ category, mostly because she deserves so much more than what he can give. But the more time that he spends with her, Tucker begins to think that maybe there is a chance for love after all…

Abby Mathews has been in love with Tucker Simon since he walked into her family’s bar nearly a year ago. But he’s got baggage and heartache a plenty. His one-night-stands aren’t going to lessen that no matter what he thinks. Tucker needs a friend, but Abby wants to give him more, and as they navigate their way through a weekend in Florida, their attraction can’t be ignored. Abby has to make a choice. Does she cherish their friendship and take what she can get? Or does she go after what she really wants, which is Tucker’s heart…

••••••••••••••

REVIEW: TUCKER is the first instalment in Juliana Stone’s new, contemporary, adult romance spinoff series The Family Simon. The Family Simon is a spinoff from Juliana’s successful –The Barker Triplets series-and we were introduced to Beau Simon in CONCEAL (TBT #3). This is Tucker Simon and Abby Mathews story. Tucker is a high powered broker and Abby (and her family) own The Black Dog-a pub near Times Square, New York. This is a friends to lovers storyline where misunderstandings, lost loves and letting go set the stage for a heartbreaking tale.

The focus of the storyline is on the sexual and palpable attraction between our leading couple and the ghost blocking any chance at love for a couple who have been dancing around one another for close to a year. Tucker’s emotional baggage is part of his current persona and there will never be any chance of moving forward until the past is buried but burying the past is nearly impossible when everything he does reminds him of what is missing and why. Abby is Tucker’s close friend, perhaps his best friend and confidant but Abby wants more. The fear of destroying their friendship is one of many reasons Tucker refuses to place his heart on the line.

The relationship between Tucker and Abby begins as friends and escalates when Tucker asks Abby to be his plus one for cousin’s wedding. There is no denying their attraction but Tucker’s past is the one thing holding him back-regardless of time and unanswered questions. As the storyline develops, so too does the relationship until the past comes roaring back and everything they have worked towards may be lost in a matter of moments. Tucker’s previous relationship and the subsequent demise is first and foremost on the minds of everyone in the storyline and is a major focus of the premise-there is no moving forward because closure has never been made.

The storyline is well paced and the cast of secondary characters are colorful; add humor; and hint at future storylines. There is mystery and suspense; romance and love; well meaning family and friends; and at times a little too much tortuous remorse. I will add that the novel is in need of another proof read or editor-there were several spelling and grammar errors that should have been caught and corrected –especially for a novel that has already been released to the public.

Juliana Stone writes a story about moving forward and letting go. When loss cannot be explained there is rarely any closure for those left behind. Juliana pulls the reader into an emotional and heartbreaking storyline where one man must close the door to the past before opening the door to his future.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date April 1, 2015

Two brothers.

One woman.

One son.

One choice.

Lives ripped apart, shattered and rebuilt.

Evan and Nate Archer: Brothers, best friends, warriors and now enemies. Both in love with the same woman. Both determined to fight for what they want.

Nate Archer promised to protect Ryley Clarke in the event Evan didn’t make it back. It’s a promise between brothers since the early days of basic training. Nate never considered that his feelings, long buried since high school, would resurface and grow stronger.

Evan Archer wants answers. He wants someone to pay. After being gone for an unprecedented amount of time, nothing is making sense now that he’s home. Most of all, he can’t understand how his brother ended up engaged to his fiancée. Evan is determined to uncover the mystery, and win back his family.

The Archers are about to fight dirty.

•••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: CHOOSE ME is the second installment in Heidi McLaughlin’s adult, contemporary The Archer Brothers romance series. The focus of the storyline is on Navy SEALs and twins Nate and Evan Archer, and the woman they love Ryley Clarke.

Some background: Six years earlier, several months into a secret SEAL mission, Evan Archer’s SEAL team was presumably ambushed and killed. Fast forward to present day, where Evan and his team return home to shocked family members and lost loves. Evan’s brother Nate is now engaged to the woman Evan loves, and has been raising Evan’s child as his own. When Nate and Evan begin an investigation into the missing six years, they uncover some disturbing information and a twisted plot.

Told from alternating first person points of view (Nate and Evan) the storyline follows the growing animosity between Nate and Evan. Once beloved brothers, their emotions and pent up frustrations build as both men declare their love for Ryley Clarke. Ryley is caught between the love of two men, and her heart has a difficult time letting go. As Evan watches his only son call his brother ‘Daddy’, he considers walking away before destroying the family that he loves.

CHOOSE ME is a storyline of intrigue, secrets, illegal operations and murder. Evan and his Team have become the pawns in a war they knew nothing about-someone back home was pulling the strings and the government knew nothing about the continuing mission.

Evan’s SEAL Team is present as they continue to uncover to truth behind their original deployment. Families have been destroyed; lovers have gone missing; confusion reigns throughout. Tucker McCoy’s story is the next to be told-his wife and daughter have disappeared and Tucker is lost in a world of grief and hate.

Heidi McLaughlin pulls the reader into a heartbreaking storyline where two brothers have loved the same woman since they were young. Evan is the man who had stolen Ryley’s heart; Nate is the man who continues to put that heart back together. I am NOT a fan of love triangles, but in the case of Nate, Evan and Ryley, the angst and anxiety of the fated YA triangles is absent, and in this the reader is aware that the painful resolution will not be as painful as once thought. Yes, there are moments when the brothers play Ryley against one another but it is to be expected in the grand scheme of things—under the circumstances. I was almost hoping for all three to end up together.

CHOOSE ME is an emotional tale; a storyline of mystery, drama, staggering revelations, and passionate ideals. There is heartbreak and loss; friendships and family; saying good bye and letting go. Each brother will get their happily ever after although each reader will see something different in the conflict resolution and outcome-the wrap up was idealistic and perhaps improbable but comforting-none the less. Heidi McLaughlin invites you in for a roller coaster ride of emotional high and lows.

The One That Got Away by Bethany Chase -a Review

The One That Got Away by Bethany Chase -a Review

The One That Got AwayAmazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / The Book Depository / BAM

Description:
Sarina Mahler thinks she has her life all nailed down: a growing architecture practice in Austin, Texas, and an any-day-now proposal from her loving boyfriend, Noah. She’s well on her way to having the family she’s hoped for since her mother’s death ten years ago. But with Noah on a temporary assignment abroad and retired Olympic swimmer — and former flame — Eamon Roy back in town asking her to renovate his new fixer-upper, Sarina’s life takes an unexpected turn.

Eamon proves to be Sarina’s dream client, someone who instinctively trusts every one of her choices — and Sarina is reminded of all the reasons she was first drawn to him back in the day. Suddenly her carefully planned future with Noah seems a little less than perfect. And when tragedy strikes, Sarina is left reeling. With her world completely upended, she is forced to question what she truly wants in life — and in love.

Full of both humor and heartbreak, The One That Got Away is the story of one woman’s discovery that, sometimes, life is what happens when you leave the blueprints behind.

Review:

The One That Got Away by Bethany Chase is her debut novel. This is a contemporary woman’s fiction and a sweet romance. The One That Got Away belongs to Sarina, our heroine, who is the heart and soul of this story.

Sarina is a successful architect that is rising to the top. She has everything going for her; great friends, a serious boyfriend, and a fabulous career. Then one night at a party with her friends, her one night stand from 7 years before, joins them. Eamon is a famous swimmer, and he returns home to Austin and decides to stay, asking Sarina to renovate a house he is buying. Sarina has never forgotten Eamon, and the fact that he left without a word in the middle of the night, made for an uncomfortable face to face meeting. But unable to resist an architect’s dream to build a house carte blanch, Sarina accepts Eamon’s offer. With her boyfriend, Noah on assignment in Argentina for a few months, Sarina is determined to work with Eamon and not fall into any possible relationship. We know what happens to best laid plans.

Eamon knows he is falling for Sarina, as they work together, but he also respects that she is off limits because of Noah. What sets this apart from other romances is the different parts of Sarina’s life that we get to spend time with. It was fun to see Sarina at work, seeing the descriptions of her layouts, her presentations, and the competition she faces. A very nice touch, which made this story more enjoyable.

We also got to see her relationship with Noah, and his family, and what their expectations were for her, which surprised her, would begin to change things totally. Sarina having lost her mother a few years before, still kept a close relationship to her stepfather, which was heartwarming. Her friendship with Danny, her gay roommate, was fun.

Sarina’s slow to built relationship with Eamon was the crux of the story, and we found ourselves rooting for them. With all that surrounded them in this story, as well as their past, it was a slow, but nicely done process. Through it all, we didn’t know if Sarina and Eamon would be able to get together.

I thought Bethany Chase created a very nice story, with a wonderful down to earth heroine, and some great secondary characters. The One Who Got Away was very well written and a fun, emotional, sweet story.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date April 13, 2015

“Don’t Look Back in Anger”

In one night, I lost five years of my life. Here’s what I know …

I was homeless.

I’m a recovering drug addict.

My inked skin crawls from lustful eyes.

I have a serious aversion to women.

My gay partner is a home wrecker.

I own a gun and I’m a damn good shot.

I’m a makeup artist, but it’s an insult to my talent.

I’ve never wanted to possess anything except my Ducati … until I met Darby.

Now here’s what I know since that day in the ER when she pieced me back together … nothing—but a few random thoughts.

My new “friend” is distracting, clingy, and obsessed with acronyms, emojis, and phrases like “breakfast soul mates.”

I didn’t want to like her, but she crawled under my skin and swallowed me whole. Now we’re best friends and she’s my new addiction. I’d drink her from a shot glass, snort her up my nose, or inject her into my veins if I could. What I won’t do … is ever tell her that.

She doesn’t know me … I don’t know me. When those missing years come back, I think she will hate me … I think I will hate me.

My parents named me Patrick Roth, and this is my story.

••••••••••••••

REVIEW: ONLY TRICK is the latest stand alone, adult, contemporary storyline from author Jewel E Ann focusing on physician’s assistant Darby Carmichael and makeup artist Patrick ‘Trick’ Roth.

Told from two first person points of view (Darby and Trick) the storyline centers on the building relationship between Darby and Trick- a friends to lovers storyline that finds Darby falling in love with her ‘gay’ best friend only to discover that her ‘gay’ best friend has fallen in love with her. Trick is a man without a past; without a family; without the memory of five missing years. At fifteen, Trick’s parents disappeared, leaving the young man homeless and alone but an accident will find Trick without important memories where five years of his life have disappeared. Throughout the storyline events and memories will be triggered as his love for Darby Carmichael grows. Darby is a woman whose own family history is riddled with death and disillusion; and a father who despises the very ground upon which our heroine walks.

The colorful, engaging and emotion driven secondary and supporting characters include Trick’s roommate Grady Cross, and Grady’s sister Tamsen, as well as Darby’s all seeing ’Nana’ Grace McDermot, and fellow co-workers at the hospital. Darby will be introduced to Trick through Gemmie, who is a whirlwind of information.

Jewel E Ann pulls the reader into an emotional storyline of an all-consuming love between two people whose family lives are dysfunctional and broken. This is NOT a M/M storyline but a story about a boy and girl, who have found one another against the odds, and the odds are definitely not stacked in their favor. Trick’s past will eventually catch up and everything about their lives will be destroyed when the truth is revealed. I dare you not to cry ! The $ex scenes are provocative, intense and seductive without the overwhelming erotic factor.

excerpt

“He’s a makeup artist Gemmie recommended. But he has not, nor ever will be ‘throwing his hat into the ring.’”
“Married?” She grins as if the thought of me being someone’s mistress pleases her. It’s possible all my living relatives are a bit twisted.
I shake my head and smirk. “No, Nana, he’s not married. He’s … gay.”
She throws her head back and slaps her hand against her chest in a fit of laughter. “Oh my goodness!”
“Why is his sexual preference so hysterical?”
“Oh dear…” she wipes the corners of her eyes “…it’s just you have the worst luck in love. When did you find out?”
I reach over and grab a tissue from the sofa table and hand it to her, rolling my eyes. Then I proceed to tell her everything, not leaving out one single detail—including my magnetic attraction to him that shouldn’t be sexual but is.
“Well, dear, you’ve hit the jackpot.”
“What? How have you come to that conclusion from everything I’ve told you?”
“A guy friend who’s gay? I hear they’re every girl’s dream. Except, from the sounds of things, Trick needs to gay up a little more and stop confusing unsuspecting women.”
“Gay up? Who are you?”
She snaps her wrist at me. “I read the tabloids you know.”
“Yeah? Well then you should know that gay doesn’t have a look.”
“That’s the problem. You used to be able to tell by the ear piercing—right for gay left for straight. Or is it the other way around? Anyway, these days everything gets pierced and so it becomes terribly confusing.”
Nana provides nonstop entertainment, and every time I come by to see her I chastise myself for not doing it more often.
“We’re friends, period. And maybe you’re right. If he would ‘gay up’ a little more I might feel the jackpot effect.”
“Yes, shopping, hair, makeup, and chick flicks without competing hormones or competing for the same men.”
“Or wishing he weren’t gay,” I whisper to myself.
She tilts her head to the side, giving me a soft, sympathetic smile. “Or that too, dear.”

overcome their past and learn to trust again, multiple assassinations will

world until they figure out how to save each other first.

Review:

Stolen Vengeance by Dianna Love is the 6th book in her wonderful Slye Temp series. Stolen Vengeance is another fabulous addition to this series. One thing I can always be sure of is that Dianna Love will give us a thrilling story, filled with suspense, danger, action, excitement all the way through and a fabulous romance, which I finished in one day.

Just a quick refresher: Slye Temp is an agency that is run by Sabrina Slye, which handles covert operations for the government against terrorists. In Stolen Vengeance, Dingo Paddock is our hero, who has been with Sabrina from the start, as they grew up together. Dingo has secretly been keeping an eye on Valene Eklund, the woman he has loved for years, whom he walked away from 7 years before to save her life. But now she is in danger once again, and Dingo will go against the wishes of Sabrina to protect Valene. The only difference is Valene wants no part of Dingo, since when he walked away without a word, he broke her heart.

What follows is an exciting adventure with Valene right in the middle. She needs money to help her sick father, and accepts a new contract to find a stolen artifact that everyone seems to want to get their hands on. Valene ignores Dingo’s request to stay away and not get involved. Of course, she doesn’t listen and a wild action packed edge of your seat thriller ensues that will create problems for Dingo and Valene, with the villains, government and Slye Temp.   But Dingo having let Valene go years before, will let nothing stand in his way to save her.

I will not be giving any spoilers, as most of the above is early on. I will say that the last half of the book was so suspenseful, I could not put the book down, as I had to know what was going to happen next. The romance between Dingo and Valene also heats up in the last half, and they were sizzling together. Another reason I love this series is being able to spend time with the characters we have come to love. Nik had a bigger part in this book, as did Sabrina. I have discovered that the next book belongs to Sabrina, and I am ecstatic about that.

Dianna Love has done it again, with another fabulous story that is non-stop action, with a super romantic couple. Dianna is one of the best at romance suspense, and I never fail to enjoy her stories. In Slye Temp, and the Belador series, Dianna has created some wonderful characters, whether they are the leads or secondary characters. If you have not read this series, or anything by Dianna Love, you are missing a lot. If you like to read romance suspense, pulse pounding action, sexy, with super couples; look no further then the Slye Temp series.   Stolen Vengeance continues the trend of terrific stories, in a series not to be missed.

Rescued by the Rancher by Victoria James – a Review

Rescued by the Rancher by Victoria James – a Review

Rescued by the RancherAmazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / BAM

Description:
Starting over and starting a whole lotta trouble…

Meredith Anderson left her difficult past behind to create a new life for herself in Tall Pines-where she can be the independent, confident woman she always dreamed of being. Now she’s a partner in her sister’s wedding planning business, helping brides realize their happily-ever-afters…even as she promises herself to never fall in love.

Meredith’s sweetness and vulnerability brings out the protective side of rancher Gage McAllister-even though their worlds are miles apart. All it takes is one night for desire to take hold of them both, a sizzling encounter that can only lead to the promise of more. But Meredith isn’t looking for more, and even if she was, Gage is set to leave Tall Pines behind him…

Review:

When I was asked to review the second book in the Tall Pines Ranch series, I had never read a book by Victoria James. Plus I tend to be one of those afflicted by the “must be read in order” syndrome, so I decided that to begin at the beginning with this series was the right approach. The Rancher’s Second Chance is Melanie and Cole’s story where the main characters of the second book, Gage Mackenzie and Meredith Anderson, first meet. Be assured that both books can definitely be read as standalones and it’s not necessary to read them in order of release either, but I’m glad that I did because both were delightful surprises.

My review won’t give away many of the story’s details that might detract readers from discovering their own pleasures as they read each page. And the blurb provides plenty enough info to grab a reader’s attention. Suffice to say that here you’ll find yourself on a beautiful Colorado ranch among charming characters in a captivating and well-written storyline.

It’s a clear cut case of opposites attracting. He’s country – she’s city – he’s had a far less-than-charmed life – and she’s had everything money can buy. But one night of dancin’ and drinkin’ at a cowboy bar called the Horseshoe leadstoa “friendly proposition” that might lend just the stroke of luck needed for a perfect blending of two hearts.

Rescued by the Rancher begins about a year after the first book ends. Meredith is living on the Forrester’s ranch where she and her sister Melanie are now business partners. Meredith left behind her lying, cheating, scumbag fiancé, parents that used guilt to control her, and a huge fortune when she set out to start a new life for herself. I love watching a character like Meredith mature and develop from a spoiled rich socialite into a strong and successful woman who has taken charge of her life with a few lingering insecurities. Meredith is also holding onto a heartbreaking secret and one that leaves her feeling certain she’ll never fall in love again. These blips really accentuated the depth and quality of her character. This girl has some sass and spunk – and there won’t be any boots walking all over her either. Cheering her on is an easy choice.

Gage is Cole’s best friend and the Ranch Foreman for Forrester’s Tall Pines Ranch where he’s lived since he was a teenager. He loves Mrs. H’s chocolate cake, Sunday night television, and he hopes to have land and a home of his own in the near future. He’s ruggedly handsome, charming, smoking hot, and he’s got his choice of any woman around – but ever since Meredith literally fell into his arms a year ago, he wants only her but feels he can’t give her what she deserves. Gage is hiding secrets of his own that he’s ashamed for anyone to learn. He, too, carries a promise to never fall in love. Being raised by an unwed mother, who chose drugs and loser men over him, has left some dangling family issues that Gages feels a responsibility towards. He might be a little too good to be true – as he takes his responsibilities to new heights – even when he owes nothing but a swift kick in the derriere to some people.

Readers will find plenty of sizzling chemistry and combustion in the blazing relationship between Gage and Meredith before the door closes on fully explicit scenes. This may lead to disappointment for some, but I found each of those moments framed believably and quite moving in substantiating the intimacy and passion between Gage and Meredith.

The secondary cast, including reappearances by Melanie and Cole, is solid and strong. One particular secondary cast member, the matchmaking housekeeper Mrs. H, is a hoot and a sweetheart all rolled into one. She adds her own special touches with sweet treats, a few scolds here and there with the help of her trusty hand towel and, of course, her protective mama bear hugs that will surely steal your heart.

A cache of treasures can be uncovered in the bursts of humor and romance amid the complicated absurdities of life that takes place. Nobody escapes the hard knocks. There are enough ongoing family difficulties on both sides of the fence, along with matters of the heart, to keep momentum at a high. Parental issues abound – but among them, there is one gloriously notable surprise for someone who deserves it the most. I was brought to tears and admiration zoomed to a high point. Rest assured that the angst by no means unbalances the good times rolling onward.

Although I’m not a huge fan of this sub-genre, there are times when after a long line of darker and grittier reads, a dose of cowboy-sexy in butt-hugging jeans and boots fulfills a much needed change in pace, scenery and content. I also had my heart broken and pieced back together again, and in between found myself laughing out loud while also drying my sniffles, too.   It would be remiss if I didn’t mention how much I loved the well-chosen cover for RESCUED BY THE RANCHER – it provides an apt visual that sparks the good vibes and sizzling chemistry between the two main characters in this story.

From start to finish, this is a quick and fun-filled few hours of reading that was a wonderfully entertaining installment to the Tall Pines Ranch Series!

The one person who will hand him over to his enemies to get back the life they lost.

Nick has finally accepted his fate, now he must learn to defy his destiny, and the dark, deadly forces that will stop at nothing to destroy everyone he loves so that they can again return to the world of man and own it.

Review:

Lions, tigers and bears oh my….oops, wrong story, for Nick Gautier it’s more like demons, zombies and hell-monkeys oh my, I don’t think we’re in New Orleans anymore Mr. Fuzzy Boots! For those of you who haven’t read Instinct yet, Mr. Fuzzy Boots is the nickname Nick gives to a fellow demon friend Xev, because his shape-shifting form is that of a cat. As for spoilers, that is the only one I’m giving in this review, so if you want to know about the twists, turns and surprises Kenyon gives us in this installment, of the Chronicles of Nick, you will just have to read the book.

Instinct is book 6 of the CON series and picks up right where the last one left off. For poor Nick, nothing is ‘normal’ anymore. Anywhere he goes or looks there’s trouble lurking in the shadows just waiting to claim him and use his dark powers to destroy mankind and rule the world. Now that Nick has finally accepted the truth of his birth and legacy, he now needs to learn to control the demon inside him, and make his own path in the world, all without loosing his soul and destroying everything in his path. Easy peasy for a teenage boy right?   Wrong, if there was ever a character written with worse luck then Nick Gautier, then I’ve yet to meet them. Just when Nick think’s things may be settling down, all hell literally breaks loose around him and when it seems the end is near, somehow he manages to pull off a hail mary move while keeping his soul and self in tact, all while saving those around him that he loves and holds dear.

As I stated earlier, Kenyon once again throws some curveballs our way, along with creating more questions then she answers for us readers. It’s one of the reasons I love her books so much, it just keeps me coming back for more. Now having said that, we do learn something very interesting about Nick’s mom that I never saw coming. It makes me wonder just how it will play out in the remainder of the CON series, then into his adult book and story line there. Along with the Cherise reveal we also learn more about Xev whom we met in Illusion, and why Caleb was so against Nick releasing him from the hell realm he was in. Xev’s character really tugged at my heartstrings and I am glad he turned out to be a friend to Nick instead of foe. This is another aspect of Kenynon’s writing and story telling ability that I like. Even though the series is about Nick, she also creates subplots for her secondary characters. I love learning the stories that go along with each new character we meet along the way. With Kenyon, no new character is introduced without having a backstory and connection to current characters. Such is the case of Aeron, whom we meet in a hell realm that Nick must visit as part of his ‘test’ to become the rightful Malachai, in order to save those he loves back in New Orleans. (Say what??? Why is Nick having to go through a test to become the rightful Malachai you say??? Hmmm, I don’t know, you’ll just have to keep reading…evil laughter ensues)! Aeron helps Nick along the way in not only retrieving the prize he needs, but also how to manage the Malachai beast part of his character. I liked Aeron’s character and hope we learn more about him in upcoming books. Nick’s growing Malachai powers are pretty cra cra, but it looks as though there is hope for Nick and the world after watching what happens with Nick in that hell realm and having to deal with the Malachai side of himself. Even though the Malachai is a pretty scary demon, he’s fast becoming a favourite of mine and I only hope there will be a happy ending for this Malachai when his time comes.

What more can I say other then, there isn’t a dull spot in Instinct. It’s chalked full of action, suspense, emotion, Nick’s perfectly timed humour and sarcasm, friends coming together to help one another, danger and peril at every turn, and of course Kenyon’s brilliant world building, character creations, and imagination that make you forget you are reading a work of fiction, because you suddenly feel like you are a part of the story and at any moment some demon is going to jump out and drag you into some creepy hell realm. With my luck, it would be the worst possible hell realm with no way back. LOL!! Instinct is another wonderful installment to the CON series. I just wish Kenyon didn’t leave the epilogue the way she did, it just makes me want to keep reading. Pretty sure I gave a really good ‘Noooooo’ when I read the last line. LOL!! If you haven’t read this one yet, what are you waiting for, get to reading!!!

Until next time, Happy Reading my fellow Menyons!

Interview with B.T. Urruela-Model, Athlete & Personal Trainer

Interview with B.T. Urruela-Model, Athlete and Personal Trainer

BT Urruela 8 TRC: Hi BT and welcome to The Reading Café. Congratulations on the recent cover of Lexi Buchanan’s SINFUL.

BT:  THANK YOU!

Follow BT Urruela: Facebook /Twitter/ Instagram/

TRC: We would like to start with some background information. Would you please tell us something about yourself?

Click HERE for B.T’s complete story.

B.T: I am of Sicilian and Cuban descent. I was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri before joining the Army at 18 and shipping off to infantry basic training in Fort Benning, Georgia. From there, I went to my next duty station in Baumholder, Germany, then to Kuwait, and eventually to Iraq. October 22nd, 2006, just two and half weeks before my 21st birthday, my vehicle was hit by two improvised explosive devices and would eventually be sent to Walter Reed Army Medical Center to rehabilitate from my injuries.

TRC: Aside from the obvious, how has your life changed upon reentry into civilian life?

BU Urruela 2B.T: I had a really tough two years transitioning due to lack of support and dealing with the side effects of PTSD. Team sports and helping others is the only thing the pulled me out.

TRC: What do you do when the stress becomes overwhelming?

B.T: My dogs relieve a lot of stress and the gym is my go to!

TRC: Do you believe enough is being done to help returning and injured soldiers reintegrate back into society or get the help that they need?

B.T: I believe we have a tremendous amount of work to do. The VA is inundated with patients and many health care providers in the system could care less about the patients they are treating. The VA needs a major overhaul. Much of the burden is put unto the shoulders of non-profits. Without Veteran Service Organizations around to help, it would be so much worse.

TRC: Would you please tell us about VETSports. How many VETS have benefited from your work?

Click HERE for the VETSports website

B.T: I co-founded VETSports in 2012 with two other combat wounded vets. It was our goal to assist in the transition of veterans back into civilian life through team sports and community involvement. We have served over 2,000 veterans in six states and that number continues to rise.

TRC: What were your dreams and aspirations growing up?

B.T: I always wanted to be an “army man”, musician, professional athlete, or cop/firefighter.

Photo:Michael Stokes Photography

BT Urruela 10TRC: You were first brought to our attention through the amazing photography of Michael Stokes. How has the exposure through these images affected your personal and private life?

B.T: Michael is a wonderful man doing amazing things for veterans. He has allowed me to share my story on a much larger scale, and the love and respect I’ve felt from the public has changed my life drastically in the most positive of ways.

TRC: What first sparked your interest in modeling? Is there a defining moment where you knew that modeling was something you were interested in pursuing?

Photo:Michael Stokes Photography

B.T: Seeing Michael’s photos of Alex Minsky first sparked my interest. I was impressed by his ability to bear his scars with class and bravery. He made me want to do the same. It took a year to do it, but I owe him a lot for instilling in me the desire to reach for the stars despite my disabilities.

BT Urruela coverTRC: When not modeling or doing person training, what are your other interests?

B.T: I love team sports. I play flag football once a week and softball twice a week. I’ve also gotten into acting and really enjoy it. I like to read too and writing is truly a part of who I am.

TRC: Have you ever had a photo shoot that went completely wrong?

B.T: Never! All three of my shoots have been absolutely amazing experiences!

TRC: Nudity in modeling or acting can be controversial. Some pictures can cross the line between sensuality to pornography. What would you tell young models/actors /body builders just entering the business about nude modeling and photography?

B.T: I think you’re exactly right. There is a very fine line between art and just being blatant for the sake of exposure. I personally think things should be left a bit to the imagination. I’ve seen some recently with exposed pubic hair and the obvious, and intentional, outline of the penis. I don’t hold anything against those that model or shoot those kinds of shots, I just believe it’s crossing that fine line. It’s not something I would ever do.

BT Urruela 1TRC: In the past, there has been a ‘stigma’ surrounding the male model and the romance-cover industry but the popularity of the romance storyline has skyrocketed in the last few years especially with the erotic and sensual cover images. What is your opinion about the recent popularity and the very busy industry of the ‘romance cover model’?

B.T: I think EL James did SO much for the industry, and more specifically, for the independent authors within it. Pornography is rampant in our society and consumed by the masses, yet there is a stigma surrounding the romance/erotic novel industry. Sex is a part of our everyday lives. I like novels that are real and true to life. Why cut sex out of the equation? I respect the authors and models in this industry and I wish for nothing but the best for everyone moving forward. It’s refreshing that it is finally getting the respect and notice that it deserves.

TRC: Did you ever, in your wildest dreams, expect to be on the cover of an erotic romance storyline?

B.T: NEVER! But it is thrilling, humbling, mind blowing, amazing, and absolutely awesome all rolled into one! I never saw myself here, and having gone through what I have, it makes this very long road so worth the travel!

Photo:Michael Stokes Photography

BT Urruela 9TRC: Do you know the number of novel covers that your image has appeared?

B.T: Right now it sits at three. I am booked for three more including my own novel that I’m co-writing coming out this fall and I truly hope to continue this work moving forward!

TRC: Do you have a favorite cover-romance image or otherwise? (e.g. magazines, ads, Michael Stokes, etc)

B.T: Aw, you know I can’t do that 🙂 I love all of my photographers and they have all taken photos that are near and dear to my heart! Michael Stokes was my first, so obviously those shots hold a special significance, but I feel as if I fall in love with each new image that comes out. I have been so blessed to have worked with each of my photographers!

TRC: Would you please tell us what you do to relax?

B.T: I love to put a good comedy on Netflix and relax in bed with my pups.

TRC: What three things would you like to accomplish in the next five years?

B.T: I would like to see my name with KL Grayson’s on the cover of our novel, A Lover’s Lament, I would like to act in a movie or television series, and I would like to have 30+ clients who I get to help reach their fitness goals every single day.

BT Urruela 6TRC: What is something that few, if anybody, knows about you?

B.T: I don’t speak to my mother and I haven’t in three years. My brother and I had a very trying and traumatic childhood due to her and my stepfather’s actions and lack of love and, though it has made me a stronger person today, it will never be forgotten.

TRC: On what on your currently working?

B.T: A Lover’s Lament with KL Grayson, future covers with Harper Sloan and Kristen Proby, motivational speaking, and building my client base as a personal trainer with Tampa Sports Academy.

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

B.T: A big fat THANK YOU to everyone for their unconditional love, respect and support. I am overwhelmed by you all each and everyday, and it means the absolute world to me! I am so insanely blessed!
