ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date April 7, 2015

Hard Ink Tattoo owner Jeremy Rixey has taken on his brother’s stateside fight against the forces that nearly killed Nick and his Special Forces team a year before. Now, Jeremy’s whole world has been turned upside down—not the least of which by a brilliant, quiet blond man who tempts Jeremy to settle down for the first time ever.

Recent kidnapping victim Charlie Merritt has always been better with computers than people, so when he’s drawn into the SF team’s investigation of his army colonel father’s corruption, he’s surprised to find acceptance and friendship—especially since his father never accepted who Charlie was. Even more surprising is the heated tension Charlie feels with sexy, tattooed Jeremy, Charlie’s opposite in almost every way.

With tragedy and chaos all around them, temptation flashes hot, and Jeremy and Charlie can’t help but wonder why they’re trying so hard to be good.

REVIEW:

NOTE: HARD TO BE GOOD is a M/M storyline with adult situations and some sexually graphic M/M text.

HARD TO BE GOOD is the latest installment in Laura Kaye’s adult, contemporary HARD INK series focusing on an elite group of ex special forces soldiers trying to prove their innocence in an Afghanistan mission that went horribly wrong. Kicked out of the Army with a dishonorable discharge, the Special Forces Team begins an investigation of their own. This is Jeremy Rixey (tattoo artist, owner of Hard Ink Tattoo and SF leader Nick Rixey’s brother) and Charlie Merritt’s (Becca’s brother/the Colonel’s son) storyline. HARD TO BE GOOD is part of an ongoing series, where each of the storylines are interconnected therefore I recommend reading the series in order for cohesion, backstory and continuous world building. The timeline events span less than three weeks over the series.

HARD TO BE GOOD picks up immediately after the events of book three-HARD TO COME BY-following the attack and explosion at Hard Ink Tattoo. From the local mob, former special forces soldiers turned rogue, and an unknown enemy, the SF gang at Hard Ink are targeted. Someone wants something, and they believe that Nick and his fellow Special Forces team are either protecting or know of the whereabouts of what it is they seek.

Charlie Merritt is Becca’s brother- a computer genius and a victim of a brutal abduction that saw Charlie loss a part of his hand in the introductory storyline. Enter Jeremy Rixey, Nick’s brother and owner of Hard Ink Tattoo, and the man who calls to Charlie’s heart. As the gang tries to set up surveillance in the hopes of discovering the people behind the attacks, Jeremy and Charlie take their friendship to the next level. Jeremy is a bisexual male who knows what he wants, and Charlie continues to hide in the shadows at Hard Ink Tattoo.

The relationship between Charlie and Jeremy begins as friendship but the sexual tension is high. Everyone at Hard Ink is aware of the attraction between the two men, and with it comes the good natured shoulder slapping when they finally admit the truth.

All of the previous storyline couples are present as well as what remain of Nick’s Special Forces Team. I believe there is a spin off in development that includes the Raven Riders Motorcycle Club-Nick and the Team’s new allies in the war at home.

HARD TO BE GOOD is a sensual, passionate and hopeful storyline. Laura Kaye’s HARD INK is an addicting series with intense and emotional stories. A great series and a talented author that will capture your attention and heart.

excerpt

“You should be inside celebrating,” Jeremy said, his
voice a raw scrape. “You and Marz did an amazing thing this morning.” An hour
ago, Marz and Charlie had cracked open a heavily encrypted microchip that contained
a wealth of information that not only seemed likely to help the team clear its
name, but proved that Charlie’s father hadn’t been dirty, like they’d all
thought. “And I’m so happy for you about your dad.”
A wounded darkness passed through Charlie’s gaze, but
he finally nodded. “Didn’t feel right without you there.” Pink filtered into
his cheeks, and damn if that wasn’t as cute as it was sexy. Jeremy wasn’t sure
anything had ever made him blush.
“I’m just not—” Jeremy shrugged and looked down at Charlie’s
chest again. Having seen the guy dress more than once, he knew that shirt
covered lean muscle that ran from strong shoulders down to his narrow hips.
Jeremy fisted his hands against the urge to burrow them under the hem of the
tee. After weeks of looking, and wanting, he was dying to touch. Jeremy found Charlie hard to read though, and
hadn’t wanted to do anything to scare him off. “—very good company right now.
I’m sorry if that—”
Charlie nudged Jeremy’s chin up with his hand, his
fingers just barely touching Jer’s stubble-covered skin. But then his thumb
landed softly against his lips.
Jeremy’s heartbeat kicked up and his lips fell open.
Slowly, oh so tentatively, Charlie stroked the soft pad of his thumb back and
forth across them.
“Charlie,” Jeremy whispered as arousal surged through
his body, spiking his pulse, tensing his muscles, hardening his dick.
Uncertainty poured off Charlie as the man’s hand
trembled where it touched him, but those blue eyes absolutely blazed desire. No
way was Jeremy imagining that.
“You’re always good company, to me,” Charlie said in a
low voice, his gaze dropping to Jeremy’s lips. Charlie leaned in closer, and
closer still, and Jeremy could hardly believe the other man was the one to
initiate this. But he was fucking thrilled.
Jeremy swallowed, his lips anticipating that first
soft brush. Charlie was so close his shaky breath caressed Jeremy’s lips. His
pace was maddening but so damn sexy Jer could barely breathe. And then
Charlie’s eyelids fluttered closed and he was right there…

Ten Good Reasons by Lauren Christopher – a Review

Ten Good Reasons by Lauren Christopher – a Review

Ten Good ReasonsAmazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / The Book Depository / BAM

Description:
In the latest Sandy Cove romance from the author of The Red Bikini, ten good reasons aren’t enough to keep Lia and Evan apart…

With a crazy eighty-hour-a-week job, an almost-boyfriend who’s left her for Bora Bora, and way too many terrible bridesmaid dresses in her future, Lia McCabe needs a change of pace before the imminent crush of the big 3-0.

First up, Lia is determined to help make sure her friend Drew’s whale-watching business takes off. But when an accident leaves him unable to man the boat, Lia’s only option is to convince Drew’s brooding, sexy brother to captain the ship (and save her butt).

For the last two years, Evan Betancourt has been sailing around the world to avoid the ghosts of his past. But when he pulls into Sandy Cove for a brief stop, Lia makes him an offer she won’t let him refuse.

And as these two opposites figure out how to work together, the murky waters between denial and attraction are creeping up fast…

Review:

Ten Good Reasons by Lauren Christopher is the second book in her Sandy Cove series. This is a sweet enjoyable romance. This is my first book by Lauren Christopher and it will not be my last.

Lia McCabe is our wonderful heroine, and she is a bubbly, whirlwind of exuberance who is also a workaholic and a loyal friend. Lia’s best friend, Drew, who owns and runs a whale watching tour boat, has just had a bad accident on his motorcycle. The tour is ready to begin, and totally booked. Lia is desperate to find someone to take over the tour, and help out Drew. Since she has arranged for a high profile client to attend a couple of the tours, she is determined to keep the tour on, as her job promotion depends on it.

Evan Betancourt is our hero, and Drew’s estranged brother. Evan is a recluse, travelling the world on a boat for two years, since his wife and son were killed tragically. He passes through Sandy Cove to fix his boat, and try to visit the brother he hasn’t seen in a long time. Just when he chickens out, he meets a desperate Lia, who will not take no for an answer.

Lia doesn’t know Evan’s past, or why he and Drew do not talk to each other. All she knows is she needs Evan to run the tour boat until Drew gets better. After being a major pest, Lia finally convinces Evan to help out his brother for a week or so, until they can find someone else.

What follows is wonderful sweet story that allows us to enjoy the whale watching tours, which Christopher details so well, that we feel we are on the boat with them. This was a lot of fun seeing how these tours go, getting to know some of the wonderful secondary characters and watching Evan’s frozen heart slowly begin to melt. The chemistry between them was off the wall sizzling, though from the beginning neither of them were interested in any kind of relationship. But as they spend time together on the tours, they get to know each other, and the fun begins, since they can no longer avoid those feelings.

Even when they do act on their attraction to each other, we know that the future for anything more has to be slim. Evan finds it hard to let go of his tragic past, but he has not felt this way for two years. Lia finds herself enjoying the benefits of Evan’s stay, knowing he is leaving shortly and she wants her promotion, which will send her to Paris. Is there a future for Lia and Evan? You will need to read this book to find out. Lauren Christopher has written a wonderful story, about a fabulous couple, so different and yet so perfect for each other. Ten Good Reasons is a perfect read that you will not want to miss.

The Highlander’s Outlaw Bride by Cathy MacRae-a review

THE HIGHLANDER’S OUTLAW BRIDE by Cathy MacRae-a review

the Highlander's Outlaw Bride

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Amazon.uk /

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date March 6, 2015

Thrust into the role of laird upon his father’s unexpected death, Connor MacLaurey returns home to learn his cousin has usurped his lands and title. Furthermore, his betrothed–a lass he barely knows and certainly did not agree to marry–is hunted by the sheriff, accused of stealing cattle. His plan is to petition the king for clemency for the foolish chit, break the betrothal, and take his castle back from his treacherous cousin. Marriage is not in his plans.

Brianna Douglas has no use for men. Widowed young, berated daily for failing to give her husband a child, and sent home in subsequent disgrace, she devotes her life to holding her family’s land for her young brother as their sotted father drowns his sorrow in whisky over their mother’s death. Raiders have hit her clan hard, and to save them, she finds herself betrothed to Laird MacLaurey’s absent son to seal a pact of protection with the MacLaurey clan.

Forced into a marriage neither wants, it will take a king’s edict and sacrifice from both to discover what love means. But can they accept their losses and learn from their mistakes before Brianna marries another?

•••••••••••••

REVIEW: THE HIGHLANDER’S OUTLAW BRIDE is the second installment in Cathy MacRae’s The Highlander’s Brides historical, romance series. This is Lady Brianna Douglas and Laird Connor MacLaurey’s storyline. We were first introduced to Connor in book one-The Highlander’s Tempestuous Bride wherein Conn fell in love with his best friend’s wife. Although THE HIGHLANDER’S OUTLAW BRIDE is the second book in the series, it can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty.

The premise follows Brianna Douglas as she and her guards are sentenced for ‘stealing’ cattle. For two weeks, Brianna has stood by and watched as thieves have stolen livestock from the neighboring lands and farms. Unwilling to sit back and do nothing, Brianna attempts to take back what rightfully belongs to the others and in doing so finds herself facing the hangman’s noose. When presented before the King, Brianna announces her royal lineage and the King soon promises Brianna’s hand in marriage to Laird Connor MacLaurey, the man who rescued a fallen Brianna, after her escape from custody. Brianna is unwilling to fall under another man’s command, and does everything possible to prove to Connor that she is the wrong woman to become his wife. There is also the possibility that someone wants Brianna out of the way, and will go to any length to ensure Brianna’s head in a noose.

The relationship between our couple begins as a one-night stand following Conn’s rescue of an injured Brianna wherein our heroine does not reveal her true identity. Throughout the storyline Brianna continues to push Connor away in the hopes that he dissolves their betrothal, anointed by the King but a good portion of the storyline finds our couple separated when Connor must return home and claim his rightful position as Laird of Morven. When Conn fails to appear for his wedding to Brianna, Brianna ensures that Conn will never again, have any chance to break her heart. The $ex scenes are mostly implied and the building romance suffers when the couple are no longer together.

The secondary and supporting characters include Brianna’s family: her long suffering and grieving father the Laird of Wyndham, five year old brother Jamie and their Uncle Willie. We are also introduced to Brianna’s warriors and guards including Gavin-a long time friend who has fallen in love with Brianna Douglas. Connor MacLaurey’s men include friends and fellow guards Bray and Gillis, as well as his cousin Malcolm who has set his own eyes on the MacLaurey Lairdship.

THE HIGHLANDER’S OUTLAW BRIDE is a quick read; a fast paced and engaging storyline of revenge, betrayal, family and love. The characters are animated and control a good portion of the premise. The conversations are rich in Scottish brogue, and you can almost smell the clean, fresh air of the Highlands.

I Am Her Revenge by Meredith Moore – a Review

I Am Her Revenge by Meredith Moore – a Review

I Am Her RevengeAmazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / The Book Depository / BAM

Description:
She can be anyone you want her to be.

Vivian was raised with one purpose in life: to exact revenge on behalf of her mother. Manipulative and cruel, Mother has deprived Vivian not only of a childhood, but of an original identity. With an endless arsenal of enticing personalities at her disposal, Vivian is a veritable weapon of deception.

And she can destroy anyone.

When it’s time to strike, she enrolls in a boarding school on the English moors, where she will zero in on her target: sweet and innocent Ben, the son of the man who broke Mother’s heart twenty years ago.

Anyone… except for the woman who created her.

With every secret she uncovers, Vivian comes one step closer to learning who she really is. But the more she learns about herself, the more dangerous this cat and mouse game becomes. Because Mother will stop at nothing to make sure the truth dies with her.

Review:

I Am Her Revenge by Meredith Moore is a YA thriller. I have never read Meridith Moore before, but the book blurb sounded different and interesting for a YA novel.

Vivian is our heroine and not really a very likeable one at that. We learn pretty early on that Vivian has been brainwashed and trained by her mother beginning as a child to enact a revenge that the mother has lived with all her life. Vivian now 17 is on her way to a boarding school in England. Her mission, and she cannot fail, is to win the affection of a young man on campus, who is the target of her mother.

Ben is the golden boy on the campus, and it is his father who dumped Vivian’s mother years before, and literally broke her heart. “Mother” is in fact criminally insane, and will stop at nothing to ensure Vivian does what is expected of her. There were some scenes shown during her childhood that did not sit well with me.

Vivian slowly makes friends with Ben, ignoring him at first. When her mother puts the pressure on, Vivian and Ben become an item, and she uses all that she has been trained to do to win him to do her demands. She is to make him leave school, marry her, and eventually ruin his life. But slowly Vivian realizes that her life as she knew it wasn’t what she thought it was. With a childhood friend (the only one she ever had), seeing how normal teenage friends act, and her feeling sorry for Ben, Vivian will slowly begin to find out the truth about her own life, and her mother.

The final third of the book is very exciting, with a dangerous attempt to escape her mother and save Ben. As we raced to the climax, filled with twists and turns, the excitement is pulse pounding.

Meredith Moore impressed me with her writing, which was very well done. I will say that especially in the first half of the book, Vivian wasn’t really likeable to me, and in fact the whole process was a bit creepy. Once she begins to see another side, she does become better. This is a different type of YA storyline, and it was necessary to show how Vivian was brainwashed. However, that being said, I do like my hero/heroine to not want me to smack them. Lol I Am Her Revenge was a good story, and totally different then what I have read before.

Embryo 5: Silver Girl by J.A. Schneider-a review

Embryo 5: Silver Girl by J.A. Schneider-a review

Embryo 5 Silver Girl

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Amazon.uk/

About the book: Release Date February 26, 2015

A beautiful young TV star, Jody Merrill, dies mysteriously and police are stumped. They are even more at a loss when the grisly remains of yet another actress, Jody’s co-star, are found.

Detectives request the help of doctors Jill Raney and David Levine, police friends and detectives on their own. For Jill and David this is personal; they are heartbroken since both murdered young women were their friends. Furiously they resolve to find the killer: to skirt the law as they always do in cases of sex crimes, child abuse and murder; helping where cops’ hands are tied (“No warrant? No problem!”), or in ways that police forensics never imagined.

The killer, capable of unspeakable savagery, must commit more murders in order to hide…possibly behind the glitzy cover of Show Biz Hell. As Jody Merrill called it, “That gorgeous, sparkly bubble that closes you in, bloats your ego in some weird, alternate universe where you lose all bearings, lose yourself. Fame is unhealthy.”

Review:

To say that Jill and David can’t catch a break is a huge understatement……. Silver Girl begins with the very suspicious death of Jody Merrill. She was a close friend to Jill, as well as others at the hospital. When they head to the ER as Jody is being brought in and treated, they know almost immediately that this was no accident. Jody died a grisly death that hits Jill and David hard. Once the police request their help, they race to Jody’s apartment to see what they can find. Upon their arrival, they know something’s off. As they are looking around the crime scene, they hear something and David tries to catch whomever was in the apartment to no avail. But, once things get rolling, another dead body is found and they know there is a murderer on the loose. One who seems to be targeting characters from Jody’s popular television show and they pull out all the stops to find who’s responsible.

They are pulled into the world of Hollywood agents, attorneys and wouldn’t you know it? Seems there was a torrid affair between Jody and a certain someone who wielded a lot of power and influence over her. When Jill and David delve farther into the goings on in Jody’s inner work circle, they discover that there were several who had motive, but figuring out who had the ultimate motive becomes a game of cat and mouse. Revelations are made and secrets are discovered, but will Jill and David be able to stop the murderer before someone else pays with their life? And, when Jill is caught in the middle of a twisted person’s endgame, will David get to her in time to prevent her from being a victim as well? Well, my friends, you’ll just have to read to find out.

J.A. Schneider has once again written a story that grabs hold and doesn’t let go. The story is shrouded in suspense and mystery, which I’ve come to expect from the Embryo stories. Jill and David are wonderful characters as are all of the supporting players. We get to see them all and we get to see how their miracle baby is faring as well. I did like the fact that we had a different kind of bad guy in this one, even though I was pretty sure who it was going to be before the big reveal. If you’re a fan of fast paced, suspenseful medical crime dramas, this series is definitely for you! Well done, J.A. Schneider! Very well done!

Full Contact

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date April 7, 2015

When you can’t resist the one person who could destroy you…

Sia O’Donnell can’t help but push the limits. She secretly attends every underground MMA fight featuring The Predator, the undisputed champion. When he stalks his prey in the ring, Sia is mesmerized. He is dominant and dangerous and every instinct tells her to run.

Every beautiful thing Ray “The Predator” touches he knows he’ll eventually destroy. Soft, sweet and innocent, Sia is the light to Ray’s darkness-and completely irresistible. From the moment he lays eyes on her, he knows he’s going to have to put his dark past behind him to win her body and soul.

••••••••••••

REVIEW: FULL CONTACT is the third installment in Sarah Castille’s adult, contemporary Redemption MMA romance storyline focusing on the MMA fighters at the Redemption Gym and Training Center. This is tattoo artist (and Fuzz’s sister) Sia O’Donnell, and underground MMA fighter and private investigator Ray ‘The Predator’ Black’s storyline. Full Contact can be read as a standalone, much easier than book 2 -In Your Corner- but I recommend reading the series in order for background, history, character and series development.

Ray ‘The Predator’ is a private investigator and former soldier whom we met in book two when he came to work for lawyer Amanda Westwood (In Your Corner). We knew very little about the quiet and seemingly shy man, but his character shines through as he builds a presence on the MMA fight scene. Ray’s backstory finds our hero with a heartbreaking past that sets the tone for the current direction of his life. His attraction to Sia O’Donnell comes at a time when neither one is looking for a permanent relationship-at least that is what Sia claims in the beginning.

Sia is an artist, who because of a horrific and dark incident years before, has given up the paints and brushes, for ink and a tattoo machine. As Tag’s (aka Fuzzy) younger sister, Sia finds herself surrounded by the over protective MMA fighters; she is also their tattoo artist when ink needs to be done. An opportunity will present itself when Redemption offers Sia a tattoo shop of her own but Ray makes the mistake of looking into Sia’s past and taking matters into his own hands.

The relationship between Sia and Ray builds throughout the storyline but our couple must contend with Sia’s alpha and overprotective brother who blames himself for the incident years before. As with all of the MMA fighters who have found the woman he loves, Ray begins to mark his territory ensuring everyone knows that Sia is taken much to the anger and disappointment of Sia’s brother. Ray is a dominant, alpha male who at times falls into ‘Tarzan mode’ through speech and actions. The $ex scenes are seductive and provocative, and like the previous storylines, there are some mild bondage and discipline scenes. The push and pull of the attraction, want and need is continuous throughout the entire story-Ray has a difficult time with commitment or letting go.

The ensemble cast of colorful and engaging characters continues to drive a good portion of the storyline including the MMA fighters- Shayla aka Shilla the Killa, Blade Saw, Renegade, Rampage, Torment, Homicide Hank, Fuzzy and Doctor Death (all of the nick names must be used in the arena and at the gym). Some of the names border closely on a best selling vampire series. Drake aka Dr. Death remains stoic in his attempts to convince the heroines that their men are not worthy of their love and affection much to the consternation of the other fighters. We are introduced to Sia’s coworkers at Rabid Ink-Slim, Rose, Christos, and Duncan as well as Sia’s best friend Jess whose heart beats for the attention of Tag O’Donnell. . Once again, plenty of drama and angst as it pertains to Sia and Ray’s backstories.

FULL CONTACT is an energetic, impassioned and intense storyline. Ray is a man who buries his heartbreak with pain; and Sia is the heroine who intensifies Ray’s need, at every opportunity. Sarah Castille has brought together a family of fighter’s, who at the end of the day, support and nurture one another-sometimes family is not the blood in your veins, but the people who pull you back up every time you fall down.

But can he rule her heart?

Jake is darker, sexier, and impossible to resist. As their chemistry builds, Amanda’s not sure if she can stay in control, or if she’s finally willing to let him claim her body and soul.

••••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: IN YOUR CORNER is the second installment in Sarah Castille’s adult, contemporary Redemption erotic romance series focusing on the MMA fighters at Redemption gym and training center. This is MMA fighter Jake aka Renegade Donovan, and lawyer Amanda Westwood’s storyline. Jake and Amanda’s backstory began two years earlier- in book one AGAINST THE ROPES.

Told from first person point of view (Amanda) the second chance storyline focuses on Amanda’s downward spiral. Working for the high-powered law firm of Farnsworth and Tillman, Amanda finds herself the victim of sexual harassment, blackmail, betrayal, invasion of privacy and loss of competency. When our heroine quits her job, she begins another descent into hell carrying on with her previous promiscuous ways only to hit rock bottom and find herself being rescued by the fighters from Redemption Gym. Jake knows that Amanda is the love of his life, but he is unable to give Amanda everything she needs and wants. Not ready to settle down, Amanda walked away two years earlier, breaking Jake’s heart in the process.

Amanda likes sex and in this, her prior and continuous sexual exploits are a major point of contention throughout the story. She is a woman who will not apologize for her past but she has been pushed into a corner where she needs to come out fighting for her life as well as both her personal and professional reputation. An offer to open her own law practice finds Amanda the new legal face of Redemption, and the current representative for several law suits both for and against the fighters, and one very personal suit against the law firm of Farnsworth and Tillman.

The relationship between Jake and Amanda is a roller coaster ride of emotions, needs and disappointments. Amanda’s sexual history keeps her fidelity in question; and Jake’s need to protect Amanda comes at a cost of pushing Amanda away. Jake has a difficult time letting go of the past, and in this, he is continually on the look out for more heartbreak and betrayal. The $ex scenes are aggressive, intense and sometimes a little kinky. Jake likes to spank Amanda when she doesn’t obey his rules.

IN YOUR CORNER is an ensemble storyline. The very colorful and engaging secondary, and supporting characters include all of Redemption’s MMA fighters-Alpha males at heart- as well as the requisite evil in the form of the legal team at F&T, a couple of burly bar fighters, and Amanda’s father whose dislike of his only child comes with heartbreak and resolution. Several of Farnsworth and Tillman’s employees follow Amanda to her new office including the very British PA Penny and security/private investigator Ray (whose story will be told in book 3 Full Contact).

I did not have the opportunity to read book one AGAINST THE ROPES and I wish I had before starting IN YOUR CORNER. There is so much backstory, and history between the characters that I felt a little lost and out of the loop when the fighters talked about the past and events leading to the current time line. I am always recommending to-read a series in order and in this, I did not follow my own advice. Saying that, it did not affect my enjoyment of the story.

IN YOUR CORNER is an intense and dramatic storyline; a sensual and passionate look the personal and professional lives of Redemption’s fighters of the MMA. There is plenty of melodrama and tension as it pertained to Amanda’s family history. My only complaint is the lack of ‘information’ about Jake’s personal history and the take over of his father’s company. In this, the storyline focused more on Amanda’s struggles than Jake’s.

Sarah Castille will captivate your imagination with Amanda’s storyline as she looks for love in all the wrong places only to find herself in the arms of the man from whom she walked away

Sia: Me. I am so not a morning girl.

Excerpt

Ray grabs my wrists and pins them to the mat over my head, his body angled over me. My breath catches in my throat, and I steel myself for the memories, the black rush, the heart-pounding fear, but it doesn’t come. Instead, a red haze settles over my vision, and I press my lips together and buck my hips, throwing him slightly forward.
Bad plan. Now his groin is only inches away from my face. He’s still wearing his jeans, which means that bulge isn’t a cup.
“Ray…”
His face softens. “I hurt you.”
“Yes, you hurt me. Keeping secrets hurts me. It makes me feel like you don’t respect me. And it makes me feel like I can’t trust you. So maybe you could return to your proper seat now. Tray table up.”
He shifts down, settling his weight over my hips, but he doesn’t release my hands. “I hurt you. Means you care.”
I swallow hard and meet his gaze. “You hurting me means I was being stupid. Things were going where I didn’t want them to go. Now I’ve had a wake-up call. You have secrets you can’t share. You need to protect your secrets. I need to be with someone I can trust, and I need to stand on my own two feet. It’s just not going to work between us.”
His gaze darkens, searing me to the core. “You want to be done? Or are you scared and trying to push me away?”
The air shifts between us, electrifying, tightening my nipples and heating my blood. I am hyperaware of his thighs tucked against my hips, carrying most of his weight as he sits astride me in a dominant MMA position. My wrists, hot under his palms, press against the cool mat, restrained in a way I could never have imagined allowing them to be restrained. My chest rises and falls twice for every one of Ray’s breaths, and my core tightens. The innuendo isn’t lost on me. God, yes. I want to be done in the carnal sense of the word. But only by Ray. And I don’t really want to let him go.
“I don’t want to lose you.”
Ray’s hands tighten on my wrists, and he leans down and brushes a kiss over my lips. “I don’t want to lose you either, but I live in a dangerous world. I’ve got stuff in my life that would make your head spin. I need to protect you from that, and I’ll do what it takes to keep you safe, even if it means you hate me for it, because for the first time in my life, I want something more than doing my duty. I want a life and I want you in it. I’ve got one bad guy to catch and then I’m free. And after I’m done and after what went down this evening, you’ll never have to worry about being safe again.”
Finally, he releases my hands but I don’t move. Heat sweeps through my belly. I feel both vulnerable and curiously safe lying beneath him. My gaze shifts from his intense gaze to his sensual lips, and my breasts swell, remembering the touch of his hands, the gentle press of his lips. He wants me. Not just today, but tomorrow and the tomorrow after that.
“You make it sound like I don’t have a choice about being with you.”
“You don’t.” He leans down and kisses me with a savage fierceness that takes my breath away.

The Shadows (Black Dagger Brotherhood #13) by JR Ward-a review

The Shadows (Black Dagger Brotherhood 13) by J.R. Ward-a review

The Shadows Apr 15

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / B&N / KOBO / The Book Depository

About the Book: Release Date March 31, 2015

Trez “Latimer” doesn’t really exist. And not just because the identity was created so that a Shadow could function in the underbelly of the human world. Sold by his parents to the Queen of the S’Hsibe as a child, Trez escaped the Territory and has been a pimp and an enforcer in Caldwell, NY for years- all the while on the run from a destiny of sexual servitude. He’s never had anyone he could totally rely on… except for his brother, iAm.

iAm’s sole goal has always been to keep his brother from self-destructing- and he knows he’s failed. It’s not until the Chosen Serena enters Trez’s life that the male begins to turn things around… but by then it’s too late. The pledge to mate the Queen’s daughter comes due and there is nowhere to run, nowhere to hide, and no negotiating.

Trapped between his heart and a fate he never volunteered for, Trez must decide whether to endanger himself and others- or forever leave behind the female he’s in love with. But then an unimaginable tragedy strikes and changes everything. Staring out over an emotional abyss, Trez must find a reason to go on or risk losing himself and his soul forever. And iAm, in the name of brotherly love, is faced with making the ultimate sacrifice…

Review:

As with all of Ward’s books, there’s a lot going on. The Shadows begins a few months after The King ends. Trez has kept his distance from Selena, which has done nothing but confuse her. He knows the clock is ticking. He and iAm have been awaiting the birth of the S’Hsibe Queen’s baby, and that birth will determine if he will have to fulfill his destined servitude to the current heir to the throne. Of course, Selena doesn’t know the details about his potential servitude, but she does know that she wants him with everything in her. Selena makes up her mind that she has to tell Trez how she feels and makes a trip to the Chosen’s sanctuary to clear her head and come up with a plan, but as she is wandering the grounds, disaster strikes.

Trez is at his club where they have a situation that requires the help of the Brothers. V and Rhage make the scene to take care of said situation, when things get a little wonky….. They are giving Trez a bit of a hard time about Selena, when one of them goes too far and Trez attacks. Let’s just say that someone’s eyes light up and things have to happen pretty fast to keep to get Trez to back off, or someone will go into beast mode. Once things calm a little, V has a vision that Trez does not want to hear about……. As if that’s not wonky enough, a certain being appears to let Trez know that he is needed at the Sanctuary, and when he arrives? Nothing could have prepared him for what he saw. Absolutely nothing. I can’t say more about what transpires once he arrives, as it would be a major spoiler, but things are set in motion that will leave you on the edge of your seat and a tear in your eye. iAm, of course, plays an integral role in this. It’s no secret that he finds his HEA in this story, but when you finally see who it is? Holy hell………… You will laugh and shake your head at the same time.

We also get to see how Luchas is faring after being rescued from that barrel filled with the Omega’s blood, and he’s not in a good place. Qhuinn pleads with him to feed and do what Doc Jane and Manny tell him to, but all Luchas can see is that he is damaged and he wants out. Permanently. He’s so angry and Qhuinn is so torn as to what to do for him, that he ultimately makes a decision that will have far reaching consequences as far as their relationship goes.

And, let’s not forget about Layla and Xcor and his Band of Bastards. After Wrath was voted in as the king, permanently, in the last book, Throe is not a happy camper, or Bastard as it were. Who does he blame? Xcor…….and Layla’s influence on him. The two still see each other, but things have changed a bit between them, and when Layla voices her thoughts and beliefs on what’s going on, Xcor is not happy. Not because she isn’t spot on with what she says, but that she has figured him out. There is a HUGE shake up with the BoBs, and I, for one, didn’t see that playing out as it did! (Bravo Ward!)

The Brothers are all in this one. Some more than others, but they are all hands on deck as things are dire for the Shadows. Rhage, in particular, plays a big part in this storyline. He is having issues with what’s going on, especially with Trez and Selena. Funny thing about those Brothers……….Family is everything to them, and Trez and iAm are definitely part of that. And, when Wrath speaks, everyone listens. Unless, you’re that knucklehead, Trez. He thinks that by sacrificing himself, he’ll keep the Brothers safe……….. Uh huh……

And, last but not least, we meet Paradise, daughter of Abolone. Why is that of importance, you may ask? She is the heroine in the first book of the new Black Dagger Legacy series. We also get a brief meet and greet with Craeg, the hero of the same story. I can’t wait to find out more about this kid. Even though it was very brief, you know down to your toes that he has a lot of story to tell.

I really liked The Shadows. For me, it was kind of like Phury’s book, although that was my least favorite. It was necessary to take the story through to what’s ahead for the Brothers. I just wish I knew what that was. As I said earlier, we see everyone in this one. Our buddy Lassiter is there, as well as Assail. All of the Brothers, their shellans……….Because what happens in this one is heart breaking, and I know that a lot of readers will be insanely ticked off. If you’re not afraid of spoilers, you can go to Goodreads and read Ward’s post about where she was in her life and how that affected her writing profoundly in this one. I get it. I think I understand, but that doesn’t make me like what happened. I cried in this one. And, not where you would think. For me, it was the way the Brothers all rallied around Trez and iAm that had me doing the ugly cry. And, the way Trez and iAm are always there for each other? Ugly cry again. I know I’ve been vague and rambled a bit about this one, but it was a daunting task. Sandy usually writes these, and no one compares to her, so I did the best I could do. These are such complex books with so much going on, that I get a bit overwhelmed. But, I digress. I love the Brothers. I love J.R. Ward. If I had to pick one paranormal author to read for the rest of my life, it’d be her. Hands down. And, I know she’s going to take some flack over this one, but it’s her world and her characters, and I applaud her for telling her stories her way. Well done, J.R. Ward! Very, very well done.

ABOUT THE BOOK: April 7, 2015

Clash (verb): to conflict, disagree.

It might be fair to say that I despise Macy Carrington. She slings insults with precision, not caring about the destruction she leaves in her wake. We clash in a battle of wills every time we’re around each other, and yet… I still fantasize about being lodged deep within her body.

Clash (verb): to come together or collide.

I have never encountered someone that grates me the way Cal Carson does. His pompous, arrogant demeanor. A holier-than-thou attitude. Any interaction with “Saint Cal” ends in a verbal clash of epic proportions, and yet… there’s no one I’d rather have in my bed than him.

Clash (noun): a battle, fight or skirmish.

Her breathy moans mingle with the sound of our flesh coming together, clashing with the silence that surrounds us, dispelling any notions I once had about Macy Carrington.

Maybe I can break down her walls if we can call a truce to this battle.

He whispers filthy words in my ear, provoking feelings I never knew were possible. The burning desire in his touch clashes with everything I once believed about Cal Carson.

Maybe he can be the balm I need to soothe my broken soul, if only temporarily.

••••••••••••••

REVIEW: CLASH : (Cal and Macy Part 1) is the first installment in Sawyer Bennett’s A Legal Affairs Story serial focusing on Macy Carrington and Cal Carson. Macy is MacKayla Dawson-Connover’s best friend and Cal is Mac’s legal partner (Legal Affairs Matt and MacKayla). CLASH is part one of a three part serial therefore the installments must be read in order.

Told from Cal’s first person point of view with diary entries from Macy, CLASH follows Cal and Macy’s very caustic and antagonistic relationship-a sexually tense and aggressive ‘clash’ between two people who purport to despise one another. Macy takes every opportunity and advantage to emotionally and mentally eviscerate Cal Carson, and there is no other explanation than something or someone has destroyed Macy’s soul. When Macy finds herself in trouble, MacKayla calls in a favor from Cal.

The sexual relationship is destructive, provocative and consuming but Macy is a woman who uses $ex as a weapon; as a way to control the demons within. There is something quite sad and profound about Macy Carrington.

CLASH Part one is an eye opener; a look into the minds of Macy and Cal, and what it is to live their lives, one day at a time. There is plenty of sexual tension; sexual release; and sexual situations. There are two sides to Macy Carrington and in this, the storyline is about to explode.
