Wild Violet (Book 1): In this flashback story, Vi, the strikingly beautiful daughter of an Indian business magnate and English supermodel, is enjoying a privileged lifestyle in New York City while a college student at NYU. Yet, in her senior year, Vi learns that her strict and traditional father intends to force upon her an arranged marriage and a career working for his conglomerate in Dubai. Hidden Violet (Book 2): With her hidden past about to be exposed, Vi turns to her longtime friend and confidant, Thomas Squires, for help. Yet, they may just risk exposing their feelings for each other in the process. Now that her secrets are no longer hidden, Vi faces the most difficult challenge yet—how to build a new life for herself outside of the shadows.

True Violet (Book 3): Things are heating up for Vi in Dubai, and it’s not just the desert climate. Vi is starting to come into her own—having the hottest sex of her life and poised to take over her father’s multinational conglomerate. Yet, her suspicions are confirmed when she uncovers a plot to destroy not just her but her best friends’ lives. With an unlikely ally, Vi seeks to ruin those behind the plot. Will Vi be able to have it all and find her lasting happiness in the arms of the man she loves?

* Each trilogy of The Gilded Flower Series may be read independently, though the background from the earlier trilogies may be helpful to the reader. The Lily Trilogy is the first in the series, followed by The Dahlia Trilogy and then The Violet Trilogy. The entire Gilded Flower Series is now available.

excerpt

Sweat drips down Vi’s chest as they finish the barre work. Despite every window being open, there’s no respite from the heat for the dancers who pack in the two adjoining studios. Even in the summer, the class is full of people trying to keep up their skills for possible auditions, with the exception of Vi who does it because it’s one of the only times she’s able to feel happy and free. She takes in the mix of people as she gulps down her water—men and women, mostly in their twenties, although some teenagers who look like they could be ten years-old, the majority of them beautiful, and all of them with absolutely gorgeous dancer bodies. She tosses her water back into her bag and takes her place in front of the mirror.
“Today, half of you go there,” the instructor says in a thick French accent, making a slicing motion with his arm to divide the class and pointing to the other space. The dancers move obediently. Monsieur Renard appears to be about sixty-five and has perfectly coiffed silver hair that goes well with his perfect posture. Despite being dressed in pants and a collared shirt, he doesn’t have a drop of sweat on him. “The rest of you will be paired off. Pas de deux.”
Vi searches the room for a partner. This isn’t what she signed up for today. She likes M. Renard’s class because he demands perfection and complete control from his dancers. Every position, hip movement and alignment always has to be just right. It forces her to focus, to allow her thoughts and self-doubt to melt away and for those ninety minutes to just be. But it’s too late to leave. She doesn’t back down from a challenge.
“Mademoiselle Rai,” M. Renard points to her. “Why are you not with someone? Or is your partner invisible?” He chuckles and turns to talk to the pianist.
She smiles back and with her hands on her hips says, “Seems no one finds me worthy to be his partner. Perhaps you would like to be my partner, Monsieur Renard.”
He smiles and laughs, revealing yellow teeth stained from cigarettes and coffee. “Mademoiselle Rai, if I were younger, I would have you for a partner and you would not forget that experience.” He approaches her and says, eyeing her up and down, “Malheureusement, my youth is gone and the women along with it.” Not taking his eyes off Vi, he reaches out toward the right with his arm and snaps his fingers. “Monsieur Costas. Dance with Mademoiselle Rai. You are both beautiful. You will fit well together.”
Pointing to the girl who was originally paired with him, M. Renard instructs her, “You go dance with the others.”
Vi glances over at her new partner gliding toward her, ignoring the dirty look from the female dancer.
As soon as he reaches her, he places his hands on her waist and says, “You’re the lucky one who gets to dance with me today.”
She chuckles as she moves her feet and arms into fifth position. “The same can be said of you, Monsieur Costas.”

About The Author

Vivian Winslow was born and raised in Southern California. Before becoming a writer, she made a career out of moving around the world every couple of years thanks to her husband’s job and her incurable wanderlust. She currently lives in New York City with her husband and two elementary school age children, and is grateful to finally have a place to call home for more than two years.
New York is the perfect city to indulge her love of fashion, the arts and especially food. If she’s not at home writing or running around the city with her kids, you’ll most likely find her eating at the newest restaurant in her beloved Lower East Side or having a cocktail at her favorite bar in Alphabet City. That said, she’s still a California girl at heart and would gladly trade in her heels for a pair of flip-flops to catch a sunset on the beach.

Hot Alphas Anthology by Lora Leigh, Laurelin McGee, Shiloh Walker & Kate Douglas-a review

HOT ALPHAS anthology with Lora Leigh, Laurelin McGee, Shiloh Walker and Kate Douglas-a review

Hot Alphas

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / B&N / KOBO / The Book Depository

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date May 19, 2015

HOT ALPHAS is a four part anthology of contemporary, adult romance storylines. Each short story has a little romance, $ex, and a happily ever after while a couple stories have mystery, intrigue and suspense. Erin’s Kiss by Lora Leigh, and Burn For Me by Shiloh Walker are each part of an existing series by the respective authors, while misTaken by Laurelin McGee is the introduction to a new series co authored by Laurelin Paige and Kayti McGee.

_________________

In Erin’s Kiss by Lora Leigh, ex-Marine Turk has become Erin’s sworn protector. The consistent target of her CIA-operative brother’s deadly foes, Turk is the only port Erin has to cling to in a storm. He promised her brother long ago never to touch her—but how can he resist a woman who aches to be with him as much as he burns for her?

REVIEW: 3.75 stars–ERIN’S KISS is part of the Wound Warriors Series by Lora Leigh focusing on a group of former military operatives who work for the CIN-Covert Information Network. This is ex Marine Turk Rogan and Erin Masters romantic/suspense storyline.

The novella follows Turk and Erin as both work undercover at the Broken Bar Saloon keeping an eye on the thugs, politicians and people connected to the mob. The Broken Bar is home to a number of CIN operatives and when Erin becomes the target of an unknown assailant, the CIN and Turk move into action. The secondary and supporting characters include several CIN agents, Erin’s step brother and step father, as well as the ‘regulars’ at the bar.

ERIN’S KISS is a quick erotic read about two people who have lusted after one another for a number of months. The $ex scenes are erotic and provocative. The background and world building is limited but followers of the series may be more in tune with what has happened than new readers to the series. The novella does not end with a cliff hanger but a bit of a ‘wait and see’ what is going to happen next.

________________

In misTaken by Laurelin McGee, Jaylene Kim is a strong independent woman whose feminist values run deep. Even though attractive men are her weakness the last thing she wants is one telling her what to do. Until she meets her mysterious new neighbor. He makes her realize that you can still be strong and relinquish control . . . in the bedroom. But as their passion consumes them both Jaylene isn’t so sure he is who he says he is.

REVIEW: 3 stars–MISTAKEN is the introductory novella to Laurelin McGee (aka Laurelin Paige/ Kayti McGee) new romance series focusing on the world of modern matchmaking. This is high school English teacher Jaylene Kim and Noah Harrison’s storyline. With her rigid feminist ideals and preconceived notions Jaylene is having difficulty adjusting to other people’s (both men and women) view of life. Enter Noah Harrison, a man with too many secrets that Jaylene is dying to uncover and a man who makes Jaylene question her feminist ways.

The $ex scenes are exploratory but Jaylene has a difficult time giving up control. Throughout the storyline our heroine’s rigid feminist views leave something to be desired both in and out of the bedroom; I question the couple’s attraction to one another as I did not feel the sexual chemistry or burning need.

As this is the introductory storyline to Laurelin McGee’s new series, I am hoping with the future installments the heroines are not so uncompromising or mired in such strict feminist beliefs. The overriding premise of feminism was too much for a romance storyline. I am all for equal rights, but I don’t like the ideals of radical feminism to be pounded into me from my romance heroines. I have a degree in sociology and took several courses in women’s studies but there are times when the idealists need to consider the target of their attacks and romance readers are not the ideal targets.

In Burn for Me by Shiloh Walker, Tate longs to spend his nights with Ali, a woman he’s loved for years. But while Ali’s heart pines to be with Tate, her head has reservations. Ali knows that Tate has never forgiven his father for the fight he had with his mother right before she left the house—and was never heard from again. Tate’s unresolved anger is a force to be reckoned with . . . but the heat that blazes between them is undeniable. Now both Tate and Ali are left to wonder: Can love really conquer all?

REVIEW: 4 stars–BURN FOR ME is the introductory novella in Shiloh Walker’s Secrets and Shadows romantic, suspense series (Originally released April 1, 2014) focusing on the Bell family. This is car restoration expert Tate Bell, and single mother and part owner of a pizza cafe Ali Holmes storyline- a friends with benefits relationship where Ali wants something more.

The storyline follows the back and forth between Tate and Ali; Tate’s inability to let go of the past; the disappearance of his mother fifteen years earlier; and the introduction of Tate’s younger sister Chrissie, their sister Detective Jensen Bell, as well as Noah Benningfield and Trinity Ewing. While Tate struggles with issues of betrayal and hurt, Ali makes a heartbreaking decision about her future. The novella ends on a bit of a cliff hanger-looking towards a resolution of a fifteen year mystery.

Shiloh Walker does an amazing job in a short period of time with the world and character building. I was never confused or concerned about the direction of the story; the information revealed was just enough to spark my interest in the series.

In Tangled by Kate Douglas, Nate shows up to work at Tangled Vineyards ready to do all the things he loves best—work with his hands, grow the grapes, and craft award-winning, full-bodied wines. But when something better comes along in the form of Cassie, the winemaker and former owner of the vineyard, Nate becomes completely love-drunk. Getting involved with Tangled’s number-one mixologist is a bad way to start off a new job, but with Cassie as a constant temptation, Nate doesn’t stand a chance…

REVIEW: 3.75 stars–TANGLED is a quick story of insta-love between Nate Dunagan and Cassie Phillips. Cassie’s family once owned the Tangled Vines vineyard, where Cassie and Nate now work and manage. As Cassie’s father’s increasing dementia forced the family to sell the winery, Cassie remains behind as the leading wine maker for Tangled Vines vineyard. What ensues is a building relationship between our leading couple that eventually leads to a happily ever after…but in between Cassie and Nate become the victims of someone hoping to bury the past.

TANGLED is a storyline with a little bit of romance, $ex and intrigue. As our couple struggle with the daily business of operating a vineyard, Cassie and Nate also struggle with their building attraction. The $ex scenes are intimate and romantic without the over the top erotic factor. If you like a storyline of insta-love and a promise of forever, than TANGLED is the perfect read.

MIA AND THE BAD BOY (Backstage Pass #2) by Lisa Burstein-a review

Mia and the Bad Boy

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / B&N / KOBO /

ABOUT THE SERIES:  Five guys thought winning a making-of-the-band reality TV show would be the pinnacle of their career…until their band scored a sell-out stadium tour and became the hottest group in the country. Trying to keep their personal lives out of the tabloids while they maneuver media near-disasters and dodge rabid fans leaves little time for romance—not that their manager would allow it anyway.

But maybe, if their luck holds out, a summer on the road might lead each guy to that one girl he’s been waiting his whole life to sing for…if fame doesn’t get in the way.
Join The Heartthrob, The Bad Boy, The Big Brother, The Shy Guy, and The Cute One as they hit the road in search of their one true love. Could it be you?

About the book: Release Date May 19,2015

This good girl’s about to meet her match…

Ryder Brooks is living the dream—he’s famous, loved by millions of girls, and miserable. All he really wants is to write his own music, not Seconds to Juliet’s sugary sweet pop. In order to do that, though, the “bad boy” of the band will have to play by the rules. And that includes behaving with his new—and super cute—über-good-girl tutor.

Mia Reyes is in fangirl heaven. Tutoring her favorite member of her favorite band? It’s a dream come true…until it turns into a complete nightmare. Ryder is nothing like she thought. He’s crude, arrogant, and pretty much a total jerk. And the worst part? She’s roped into pretending to be his girlfriend so that no one finds out he’s being tutored. Fake kisses, plenty of PDA, and even sharing his hotel room…

But sometimes even the baddest of bad boys needs a little redemption.

•••••••••••••

REVIEW: MIA AND THE BAD BOY is the second installment in Entangled Teen Crush’s contemporary, young adult Backstage Pass romance series focusing on the boy band Seconds to Juliet. Each installment will be written by a different author focusing on a different member of the band. This is seventeen year old bad boy rocker Ryder Brooks and sixteen year old Mia Reyes’s storyline.

Told from third person perspective MIA AND THE BAD BOY follows shy, quiet, nerd girl Mia as she is hired to tutor Ryder Brooks for his high school GED. Ryder has kept secret his failure to complete high school ( among other things) and in this Mia is hired by the band’s manager to help prepare Ryder for his final test. Without alerting the media or the other members of the band, Ryder suggests Mia pose as his girlfriend in the hopes of fending off the nosy paparazzi who make it their business to uncover everything about the band. What ensues is a quick build up of friends to lovers between a bad boy, and a good girl who is afraid to do anything wrong. But Ryder hides another an even bigger secret and when the truth is revealed, Ryder accuses Mia of betrayal and breaking his heart.

The relationship between Mia and Ryder begins as employer and employee. Ryder is desperate to complete his GED in the hopes of attending a prestigious music college and Mia is the last in a long line of tutors who must get past Ryder’s bad boy ways. When our couple must make public their relationship, what was once pretend becomes something more; something real. Because MIA AND THE BAD BOY is a young adult storyline, the lone $ex scene is implied and fades to black.

The secondary and supporting characters include all of the members of SECONDS TO JULIET as well as the band’s smarmy manager LJ Pearl. There is a mention, in the story, as it alludes to the real-life boy band NSYNC and in this, the series reflects some of the issues encountered by JT and the boys with their own success and controlling business manager. From a ‘making of the band’ type scenario to worldwide success, the comparisons are many including the name of the band’s manager which is too close to NSYNC’s original manager Lou Pearlman. There is a slight One Direction feel to the boy band make up as well.

MIA AND THE BAD BOY is a quick and easy read without the usual drama of the YA triangle –thank goodness. The characters are engaging and animated; the storyline interesting and predictable but familiar. There is little to no foul language; and no suggestive or graphic imagery. If you are a fan of the YA storyline, you may enjoy MIA AND THE BAD BOY and the Backstage Pass series, but saying that, the storyline is geared to a younger reader, perhaps teen girls who thrive on the boy band phenomenon.

EIGHTH GRAVE AFTER DARK (Charley Davidson #8) by Darynda Jones-a review

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date May 19, 2015

With twelve hellhounds after her, pregnant Charley Davidson takes refuge at the only place she thinks they can’t get to her: the grounds of an abandoned convent. But after months of being cooped up there, Charley is ready to pop. Both metaphorically and literally since she is now roughly the size of a beached whale. Fortunately, a new case has captured her attention, one that involves a murder on the very grounds the team has taken shelter upon. A decades-old murder of the newly-vowed nun she keeps seeing in the shadows is almost enough to pull her out of her doldrums.

Charley’s been forbidden to step foot off the sacred grounds. While the angry hellhounds can’t traverse the consecrated soil, they can lurk just beyond its borders. They have the entire team on edge, especially Reyes. And if Charley didn’t know better, she would swear Reyes is getting sick. He grows hotter with every moment that passes, his heat scorching across her skin every time he’s near, but naturally he swears he’s fine.

While the team searches for clues on the Twelve, Charley just wants answers and is powerless to get them. But the mass of friends they’ve accrued helps. They convince her even more that everyone in her recent life has somehow been drawn to her, as though they were a part of a bigger picture all along. But the good feelings don’t last for long because Charley is about to get the surprise of her crazy, mixed-up, supernatural life….

•••••••••••••

REVIEW: EIGHTH GRAVE AFTER DARK is the eighth installment in Darynda Jones’s adult, urban fantasy Charley Davidson series focusing on part time PI/ full time grim reaper Charley Davidson. This is the continuing story of Charley’s life as the Grim Reaper, the corporeal spirits who have yet to pass, and the man to whom she has pledged her undying love-the son of Satan-Reyes Farrow. Lucifer has targeted Charley and her unborn daughter for termination using any means necessary including hellhounds and demons. The series should be read in order for cohesion and the ongoing history between Charley, Reyes and the end of the world.

NOTE: If you have not read the series, there will be some spoilers in my review.

Told from first person point of view (Charley Davidson) the storyline focuses on the wedding between Charley’s BFF and assistant Cookie, and Ubie (Charley’s Uncle Bob) and, the impending birth of Charley and Reyes daughter. While Charley prepares for her best friend’s nuptials, a missing persons case is brought to Charley’s attention with the belief that Charley’s special abilities are necessary to solve the case. The problem-Charley and Reyes have taken up residence in a former convent believing the Hounds of Hell can’t enter the sacred grounds and Charley is unable to cross the perimeter without placing her life in danger. And of course, Charley comes across the spirit of a young nun who hasn’t been able to crossover, in the hopes of finding someone to solve her murder and the case of her missing sister.

EIGHT GRAVE AFTER DARK is a revealing storyline where the true purpose of several secondary and supporting characters comes to fruition including the perpetually silent Mr. Wong and the twelve sent. The notion of the ‘twelve sent and the twelve summoned’ is partially revealed, and with it, my belief that throughout the series, some of the reluctant spirits and supernatural beings who have stayed behind and attached themselves to Charley, have a larger purpose in Charley’s life than fodder for one liners and the bane of Charley’s existence. I suspect the series will reveal a few more ‘spirits’ and guardians whose purpose is to defend and protect the ‘daughter’ in the upcoming war.

The ensemble cast of characters includes many of the previously introduced spirits, ghosts, demons, and one particularly sexy biker dude. Osh returns as protector but his connection to Charley goes much deeper; Angel keeps secret Reyes plans for the future; Rocket announces the impending death of someone we all know and hate. Charley’s sister Gemma and step-mother Denise play a much larger role than in the past but a role that is not high on Charley’s list of things to do or forgive. Garrett Swopes continues to decipher the ancient prophecies, while Strawberry Shortcake pops in with little bits of information. Cookie’s daughter Amber’s role in Charley’s life has yet to be revealed, but this powerful little teenager is more than just a pretty face and gaming nerd with her bestie Quentin. Artemis returns as our favorite supernatural canine.

Our heroine will continue to place herself in danger and with it comes the anger and ire of her beloved Reyes. There are secrets between our leading couple; secrets that could prove dangerous and deadly, but Charley and Reyes do not confide with one another-there is an aura of mistrust and misunderstanding.

Darynda Jones continues to use humor, amazing one-liners, sexual innuendo, euphemisms and sarcasm throughout the storyline. Once again, each chapter is introduced with a t-shirt slogan, meme or bumper sticker pointing out that all is not running smoothly in Charley’s life. The friendship between Charley and Cookie continues to be amazing; and Charley’s love for Reyes Farrow is all encompassing and forever. We could all do with a little heat and fire in our lives.

EIGHTH GRAVE AFTER DARK is a character driven storyline where everyone has a purpose and place in Charley’s life- said purposes and places are finally being revealed. Many questions will be answered; some have yet to be addressed; and in the end, Charley and Reyes’s must make a heartbreaking decision that will affect them all. . You can’t go wrong with a little Darynda Jones and Charley Davidson in your life.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date May 17, 2015

An explosion in the jungles of Guatemala left Marine Zachary Johnson completely blind. While struggling to come to terms with his disability, a strange phenomenon starts to happen: whenever he stands in front of a mirror, he sees snippets of the future.

As man with a dark past, Zach is recruited by the secretive and elusive Joe Smith to help in the underground war against a clandestine faction of the government only know as Group Nine.

Zach finds himself partnered with Ella Frolic, Joe’s old lover; a cold, angry woman with a chip on her shoulder. As they work together toward their end goal, Zach is able to thaw Ella, bringing out her true personality, and both find themselves caught up in a whirlwind romance neither ever expected.

As the last phase of Joe’s plan falls into place, everything goes terribly wrong, and Zach ends up in the clutches of Group Nine.

Will Ella save her lover, or is she the one responsible for his capture?

••••••••••••••

REVIEW: SECOND SIGHT is the fourth installment in Carly Fall’s contemporary, adult Supernatural Renegades paranormal romance series focusing on a team of former marines whose last secret mission to Guatemala left each member of the platoon with a supernatural power. This is Marine and former assassin Zachary Johnson, and the beautiful but scarred Ella Frolic’s storyline. SECOND SIGHT can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty.

Told from third person point of view SECOND SIGHT follows the building relationship between Zach and Ella. Blinded by the explosion in Guatemala, that left Zach with the ability to ‘see’ the future, our hero is temporarily housed with Ella Frolic, Joe Smith’s ex lover and a former government agent whose personality is less than welcoming. What ensues is the slow break down of Ella’s acerbic character, and a betrayal against Zach that he never saw coming.

The storyline reveals the background and history between Ella and Joe Smith, and the events that precipitated Joe’s injuries. Joe is the ‘mystery man’ who is attempting to locate all of the former Marines who were exposed to the covert experiment in Guatemala, in the hopes of taking down the government’s secret Group Nine. Group Nine has been on a search and destroy mission to locate all of the former Marines affected by the experiment, and in doing so, has placed every man in Joe’s sights. Joe will make each former Marine an offer he shouldn’t refuse.

The relationship between Ella and Zach begins acrimoniously as Ella wants nothing to do with Joe Smith or the men involved with Joe’s need for revenge. Ella’s current work for Joe finds her hunting for a backdoor into the Group Nine computers, wherein she puts into motion a plan of her own. Ella’s personality and emotional outbursts leaves much to be desired, and in this, she is a difficult character to like especially when she sets up the man with whom she is falling in love. The $ex scenes are provocative, passionate and intimate, without the over the top erotic features.

The secondary and supporting characters include another former Marine –Ruben-whose own special abilities are not under control. Joe’s aide and chauffeur Thomas is a series regular but I have the feeling Thomas is much more than Joe’s personal lackey. The introduction of Savannah makes for some sweet and enjoyable moments. And of course, Garrett, the team’s only shifter, plays a small role (if only by way of mention) as the timeline overlaps between SECOND SIGHT and book number three THE WAY YOU ARE.

The world building continues to focus on the search for the Marines –some are missing, some have been located, while others could very well be dead if the Group Nine has uncovered the location before Joe and his men.

Carly Fall continues to capture my attention with her enjoyable storylines and engaging characters. The slow reveal of Joe Smith and his purpose, in the grand scheme of things, will intrigue and keep the reader in suspense. There are moments of revelation, heartbreak, betrayal and revenge, all wrapped up in a story of romance and suspense.

Prologue Six Years Ago Zachary Johnson stared at the grey brick wall in front of him, gauging the height. As he stood right at six feet tall, he judged the fence at approximately eight feet. Piece of cake. He took a few steps back and inhaled the cool night air, a light breeze blowing in from the north, sending a chill down his spine. October in upper state New York tended to be beautiful with the turning leaves—the reds, golds, and oranges a glorious sight. However, it also signaled winter in its wake, and he experienced the impeding change in the biting night wind that chafed at his cheeks where his day-old stubble didn’t cover the skin. He rubbed his black leather-gloved hands together and took a deep breath. With an explosive burst, he sprinted at the wall, launching himself up into the air at the last second. His fingers gripped the lip while his feet kept up the momentum and he climbed to the top. Just call him Spiderman’s cousin—climbing walls like a spider without having to have been bitten by one. Glancing around, he found everything was as he expected, just as it had been earlier, except without all the people. An acre of well-manicured grass stretched ahead of him, a large, two-story, seven-thousand-square-foot red brick mansion beyond that. He glanced at the old oak trees littering the lawn, their limbs twisting and turning, casting ghostly shadows on the ground in the moonlight. Their bright red and orange leaves littered the ground, and as he jumped down to the damp grass, he sent silent thanks out he wasn’t the one who had to do the raking. He ran to the first tree and kneeled for a moment, giving himself a chance to catch his breath and really take a look at his surroundings. According to the intel he’d received and what he’d witnessed earlier when he’d attended the black tie gala at the mansion, no dogs patrolled the area because the owner of the house had a severe allergy to the beasts. However, the owner did employ two security guards. Cameras perched on the top of house, but he didn’t concern himself with that as the guards didn’t turn on the security system while they watched their charge at night. In fact, if the information he possessed and his prior observations proved correct—which he had no doubt of—this job should be very easy. Glancing at his military-grade Gravitymaster watch, he noted the time. The first security guard should be making a sweep of the backyard in the next few moments. Zach waited, and then the guard stepped out the back door and glanced around, right on schedule. He slowly walked the outer perimeter of the large patio, gazing out into the darkened yard. Staying completely motionless, Zach met the man’s gaze, and he wondered if the guard knew he had only a few moments to live. Earlier in the evening, Zach had stood on that very patio with his date, the very pretty Venus Tyler. He had no clue if that had been her real name, and he didn’t care. Their government bosses had scored them an invitation to the gala so that Zach could really study the layout of the house. Venus’s job had simply been to look pretty, talk intelligently, and make sure nothing happened to him while he casually snooped around. With her dark hair, the scarlet red dress that hugged her ample curves, and the fact that she spoke four different languages fluently, held three masters degrees, studied geoscience in her spare time, and could shoot a bulls-eye at two hundred feet, she’d fulfilled her job. In fact, listening to her talk throughout the party had gotten him so turned on, they’d left early after he’d visually verified all the information he’d received, and he’d screwed her in the limo before dropping her back off at headquarters. He loved smart women. The guard turned, and Zach sprung up and sprinted to the next tree, bringing him closer to his target. Confident the man had not heard him, he ran to the next. As his mark stopped to tie his shoe, Zach took a deep breath and covered the rest of the yard in seconds. He pounced on the guy before the poor fool even knew what hit him, twisting his neck until he heard the snapping sound of a severed spinal cord, and death. “You should be more careful who you work for,” he whispered as he lay the man down on the concrete. Slipping into the house through the sliding glass door, he glanced around, remembering the floor plan he’d committed to memory. The kitchen sat to the right with shiny steel appliances, a dim nightlight above the oven casting a low glow over the area, with an expansive living room to the left. The television droned on quietly—Saturday Night Live, if he wasn’t mistaken, and he followed the noise. The after-party clean-up crew had done a magnificent job. If he hadn’t known better, he never would have guessed there had been a seventy-person soirée held in the house just a few hours ago. The other guard sat in a recliner, chuckling. Zach could only see the top of the man’s balding head, but did note the revolver lying on the table next to the seat. He snuck up behind the chair and the guard noticed him in the T.V. reflection a moment too late. Zach delivered his death in the same manner as the other one—quickly, efficiently, and quietly. Time for his main target, now. He moved silently through the living room to the expansive staircase and traveled up the stairs, the thick brown carpet muffling his footsteps. At the top of the staircase, the hallway branched left and right. His target, Robert Yager, slept to the left behind the large double-doors at the end of the hall. As he hurried down the dimly lit corridor, he glanced at the photos on the wall, obviously a happier time for the man. Pictures of Robert’s wife and daughter smiled back at him. His wife, Amelia, a blonde beauty with green eyes, hugged her look-alike daughter, but no longer were they a family. Amelia had left him two years ago when she found out he sexually abused the girl. The man had a serious problem. He had four lawsuits against him by four different women accusing him of rape. However, because of his wealth and his family relations, his lawyers had the plaintiffs tied up in so much legal red tape, they’d most likely never get their day in court. He approached the double doors and slowly opened them. Soft snores floated to him as he stood in the darkness while his eyes adjusted. When he could make out the shapes in the room, he located the bed. As he approached, Robert rolled to his back, the sheet slipping off of him. Zach grimaced—the sexual deviant liked to sleep naked. He flipped on the bedside lamp, and the pervert sat up in bed. “Lay down, you piece of shit.” He put the muzzle of his gun to the man’s head. Robert did as instructed, his pudgy face contorted in fear as he glanced at the bedroom door. “No one’s coming to help you, Robert. They’re all dead.” He pulled the sheet over Robert’s legs, large stomach, and dick. “I really don’t need to see your weapon of choice.” Sitting down on the edge of the bed, Zach smiled at him, his gun resting on his lap but trained on its target. “So, you are the big, awful Robert Yager. I’m sorry we didn’t get formally introduced earlier, but I was doing my best to avoid you. Up close, you don’t look very scary to me, but then again, I’m not a little girl or a woman who isn’t as strong as you, am I?” “I-I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Zach rolled his eyes, taking a brown leather pouch from the inside pocket of his black leather jacket. “Save it, Robert. I’ve done my homework on you.” When the government had assigned him to kill Robert Yager, he’d been handed reams of intel on the man—everything from his daily schedules, restaurants he frequented, as well as details on the cases pending against him. That had been fine, but Zach would not sign up for an assassination without completing his own background check. He’d tailed Robert for a month, verifying all the information the government had given him, but he’d also taken things one step further and interviewed his victims. The stories had been ugly. Forced anal and oral sex seemed to be Robert’s favorite. Zach had listened to the women tell their tales, his anger and hatred for the man building with each word he heard. Satisfied that Robert Yager deserved to die, he’d taken the assignment. “Do you know who I am?” Robert seethed. “Of course I do. You’re Robert T. Yager, age forty-six. You were married for seven years until your wife found out you diddled on your own kid, you sick fuck. She decided not to press charges against you because it would prove too traumatizing for your daughter. However, you have also given up all parental rights, and you send her fifty thousand dollars a month, even though the arrangement stated thirty thousand. My guess is the extra is guilt money, but really, I could care less. “You go to the gym every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, although, based on your physique, it’s not doing you much good, but that’s probably because you love the pastries at Gloria’s Coffee Shop, two blocks from your office. In my opinion, you should really limit yourself to one or two a week, and that weight would come off. You work at a hedge fund in the city, where you gross about thirty million dollars a year. You have a thing for young, vulnerable women, and you like to make them suck your tiny dick. Is that what this is about? Are you trying to prove your masculinity despite your small member? It really doesn’t matter, but it’s something to consider over the next few minutes.” Robert stared at him, his eyes wide, breath coming in short spurts. Zach tried to garner a little sympathy for the man experiencing his last few moments of life, but found none. “Anyway, because of your money and hence, your access to the best lawyers without souls, those women will never get the justice they deserve.” He unzipped the black pouch and pulled out a loaded syringe. “Most of what you know isn’t true, and my lawyers are going to prove it. Those women are nothing but trash, trying to get a payout. They’re after my money!” Robert sputtered. Zach sighed, not bothering to answer. “Do you know who my brother is?” He smiled. “Of course I do. And, he sends his regards. He says he’s sorry it has to be this way, but you not being able to keep your dick in your pants is bad for him politically. We all know that image is everything in politics, and you, Robert, are a shit stain.” In a flash, he had the needle in Robert’s neck, the plunger empty. Robert stared at him, shocked, as he began to gag. “Don’t worry, you son of a bitch. It will be a fast death, and the clean up crew will be here shortly to deal with the others downstairs. It’ll look like a heart attack to the coroner, if they even bother with an autopsy on you. Personally, I would have preferred to give you a slower death, but I only follow orders.” Robert’s eyes closed, and a moment later, he drew his last breath. Zach felt his neck for a pulse, just to be sure. He pulled a phone out of his pocket as he left the room and dialed quickly as he walked down the hallway, down the stairs, past the guard, and out the back door. It rang twice, and then his contact picked up. “It’s done,” he said as he jogged toward the brick wall. “Good. I’ll send in the second wave.” “And just remember, I have my own plan in place that will put this story on the front page of every newspaper in the country if something were to happen to me. Please keep that in mind when you consider your next step as I’m sure you don’t want that to happen.” He jammed the phone in his pocket and scaled the wall. After glancing around, making sure the street remained empty, he then jumped down and stuffed his hands in the pockets of his leather coat and walked without urgency, as though on a late night stroll. Two blocks later, he’d encountered no one. He slipped into his car and drove away, satisfied with the job he’d done and his contingency plan to expose his handlers if they decided he knew too much. After all, he’d just killed the President’s brother.

Length: 27,000 words
Author note: This novella is part of the Moon Shifter Series, but can be read as a stand-alone.

••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: PROTECTIVE INSTINCT is the latest novella (May 2015) in Katie Reus’s Moon Shifter contemporary, adult Moon Shifter paranormal romance series. This is wolf shifters Teresa and Ryan’s storyline which was building in Hunter Reborn-book five. PROTECTIVE INSTINCT can be read as a stand alone –Katie Reus adds information and backstory where necessary.

Told from third person perspectives, the storyline forwards the series a few months. Ryan is an empath-a wolf shifter whose family history cripples Ryan from mate bonding with the woman that he loves-Teresa. Ryan’s parent’s dysfunctional relationship left lasting emotional scars on Ryan’s psyche and in this, he is cautious and hesitant about claiming his mate. While Ryan continues to deflect the urge to bond, Teresa becomes the target of revenge. While en route to check out some property for their pack Alpha, Teresa and Rafael are run off the road, by an unknown assailant-Ryan knows it is time to claim his mate.

PROTECTIVE INSTINCT continues to build upon the Armstrong-Cordona Pack as they endeavor to protect themselves against rogue vampires and the Antiparanormal League (APL) whose objective is to destroy that which is deemed unnatural. But the APL is not at play with Teresa and the others, it is someone else seeking revenge for the death of a beloved maker. Teresa and her sisters are being stalked.

A large number of the Armstrong-Cordona Pack play a secondary and supporting roles throughout the storyline including pack Alpha Connor and his mate Ana, Liam and a very pregnant December, pack enforcer Erin Flynn, and Teresa’s sisters Natalia and her possible future mate Aldric as well as Rosa and alpha Rafael. Katie’s characters and world building bring the love of family together throughout her storyline and series.

PROTECTIVE INSTINCT is a quick read; a fast paced story of revenge, romance and family. Katie’s Moon Shifter world blends vampires and shifters, lupines and felines, friends, lovers and enemies into a storyline and series that are addicting, engaging and intense-a delightful and curious mix of paranormal romance and contemporary fun.You can’t help but fall in fall.

REVIEW: RETRIBUTION is a romantic suspense storyline with a paranormal twist from author Katie Reus. The storyline follows dream walker and former CIA agent Declan Gallagher as he is tasked with uncovering the truth behind two sisters and their involvement in a string of unexplained deaths connected to the Russian crime syndicate.

Told from third person point of view, RETRIBUTION focuses on a vendetta and retribution against a group of men who, twenty years earlier, destroyed Nika and Alena Brennan’s family but the twist comes in the form of psychic Nika Gallagher as she is able to see the future as well as visits ghosts from the past. When Declan contacts Nika in her dreams, she is unaware that the sexy man will become a dangerous part of her future. As Alena sets into motion a deadly plan, Nika will begin to fall in love with the man who has been tasked with stopping the sisters before they can put their plans into motion.

Declan is a dream walker. When a favor is called in from the FBI, Declan must traverse a minefield of information; the possibility of betrayal from one of his own; and falling for a woman he believes is connected to a series of possible murders. The $ex scenes are intimate and provocative but the relationship has been based upon a series of lies of betrayal.

RETRIBUTION is an intense and suspense filled storyline with a large ensemble cast of characters that play secondary and supporting roles throughout the story. WE are introduced to Declan’s telekinetic brother Riley, as well as several members of Declan’s team at Gallagher Security. I am not sure if Katie has plans for additional storylines but there are many more characters waiting for their stories to be told. The requisite evil comes in the form of the man who ordered the hit against Nika and Alena’s parents, and the conundrum focuses on the growing relationship between Alena and the son of the man she is determined to kill.

Katie Reus pulls together a story of drug smuggling, human trafficking, retribution and revenge. As one couple struggles with the possibility of a future another couple will be destroyed by lies and deceit. The premise is intriguing; the characters engaging, believable and realistic; the storyline fast paced, imaginative and dramatic.

Years ago, Tanner Green loved Sunny Letman. She was meant to be his first kiss, first love, first everything. Then their world spun upside-down and out of control.

••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: CARRY ME HOME is a contemporary novella from Lia Riley’s Carry Me Home new adult, romance series that focuses on two people first introduced to in Talia and Bran’s storylines (Off The Map 1-3). Tanner Green is a professional skateboarder and the young man who all but destroyed Talia’s life, and Sunny Letman is the girl who has been in love with Tanner since they were thirteen years old. CARRY ME HOME can be read as a stand alone; any important information is revealed where necessary.

Told from alternating first person points of view (Tanner and Sunny) the storyline follows a second chance at friendship and love between our leading couple. At thirteen years of age, Tanner and Sunny were best friends, but a disastrous argument between Sunny and Tanner’s mothers found Sunny alone, without the young boy with whom she had fallen in love. Months later Sunny would discover that Tanner had found himself another girlfriend and Sunny would eventually become persona non grata. Fast forward several years, wherein, disaster would strike everyone concerned and Sunny hasn’t spoken to Tanner in close to two years. Both Tanner and Sunny have dark, secreted pasts that are addressed throughout the story.

CARRY ME HOME focuses on the rebuilding of a friendship; the heartbreak of loss; and the ability to forgive. Tanner’s storyline had been building throughout books one to three of Lia Riley’s Off The Map series where the reader is shown a different and possibly biased version of our storyline hero. Talia, her sister Pippa, and Tanner will forever be tied closely together, and in this there is some background to the storyline that reveals in CARRY ME HOME.

There are moments of heartbreak and loss; forgiveness and moving forward; romance and love. If you read Lia Riley’s OFF THE MAP series, you will definitely want to read CARRY ME HOME. CARRY ME HOME is a novella that focuses on a couple of the secondary and supporting characters, and INTO MY ARMS (September 2015) will focus on a couple more –Beth and Z.
