REVIEW

5 out of 5 for this reader folks!

OH ME OH MY Marni Mann.  I am so LOVING this series and you totally left me lying like a big pile of gush with this latest release!

This review of Unblocked is for the third episode of this novella serial series.  In the last episode we were left with Derek and Frankie realizing that there was no future to be together, and with Frankie seeing a woman leaving Derek’s place (a woman that is quite significant to her past relationship with her ex).  Both try to remain professional but when you know what hits the fan, Derek realizes that one night will never be enough, and now he wants to lay claim on Frankie.  Boy does he ever lay claim !  LOL

We learn the devastating history that Frankie has been living with and her ex is trying to jump back in the picture .. Derek will be having NONE of that.  In the midst of all of this, Frankie is trying to do her best to deliver her “A” game selling Derek’s property, Derek is setting up some kind of revenge on a rival and trying to keep tabs on Frankie and her ability to run away.

We are left with a major cliffhanger … BAD BAD Marni (LOVE LOVE LOVE it .. WINK) and I am so excited for the continuation of this story.  Super HOT scenes that have topped the first two episodes, and another round of the blow up chemistry between our leads, I love the set up for this story as much as I love the rest of the yummy that goes along with it!

HAPPY READING!

“If you want me, if you want this, then you have to tell me. And it has to be now.” I looked at her wrist. The bracelet she knew I liked was wrapped around her delicate skin; it was the one I had once asked her to wear. She had worn it today and that told me everything I needed to know. “Because Frankie, I don’t believe you really want things between us to end.” Her cheeks darkened and her pupils began to dilate with need. “If you tell me you don’t want me, I’ll…” She had to know I would respect her despite what I wanted. “…I’ll put you down and I’ll leave your condo. What happened between us won’t affect what we have professionally. I promise. But if you want me, then—”

Taming The Legend (London Legends #4) by Kat Latham-a review

TAMING THE LEGEND (London Legends #4) by Kat Latham-a review

Taming The Legend

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Amazon.uk /

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date May 11, 2015

When retiring rugby star Ash Trenton considered his next career move, coaching troubled teens at his ex-girlfriend’s California camp wasn’t on the list. But when Camila Morales reappears after eighteen years, begging for his help, he can’t say no to his first and only love.

Camila was just sixteen when Ash moved on to start his rugby career, leaving her heartbroken…and on her own to make a life-changing decision. Now she needs his help to win a tournament prize and save her camp. Relying on Ash is the last thing she wants. But while it’s hard to get over being dumped for a sport, it’s even harder to ignore the rush of attraction that has only gotten stronger after so many years apart.

Coaching teens is the hardest job Ash has ever had, and the task becomes personal when he begins to fall for Camila all over again. But when he is offered his dream job, will he choose the job—or the woman whose heart he already sacrificed once?

••••••••••

REVIEW: TAMING THE LEGEND is the fourth full length installment in Kat Latham’s adult, contemporary London Legends romance series focusing on the London Legends Rugby players from London, England. This is retiring rugby star Ash Trenton, and Camila Morales’s storyline. Although TAMING THE LEGEND is the fourth in the series, it can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information is revealed where necessary.

Told from alternating third person perspectives TAMING THE LEGEND follows thirty six year old Ash Trenton as he considers the future. Recently retired from pro rugby, Ash comes face to face with his past-the woman to whom he lost his V card-and a woman with a secret. Rugby has always been Ash’s first love and in this, Ash was unable to commit to Camila, therefore, walking away was his only option. Eighteen years later, Ash finds himself considering an offer to coach rugby in America but to Ash’s surprise, Camila had a few more secrets hidden behind the offer.

Camila is struggling to keep her business afloat. Inherited from her father, the business loans are soon called in and Camila looks overseas for a quick influx of cash. Approaching Ash Trenton is her last resort, but she needs Ash to help coach her latest collection of reluctant players. What ensues is a sometimes comic but oft times heartbreaking look at two people who have lost too much to ever go back.

The relationship between Ash and Camila is a second chance at love for two people whose lives went in opposite directions. Camila and Ash met eighteen years earlier, and in the ensuing time their lives could not have been more different. Camila and Ash both believe that the other no longer cared; that what they shared was nothing more than a teenage tryst but there was more to the lack of communication than anyone could have known. The $ex scenes are intimate and emotional, but in the end, Ash makes no promises for the future.

The secondary and supporting characters include several of the London Legend’s rugby players, as well as Ash’s new team in America-there is something to be said about the quick wit and sassy back talk from his new team of players. We are introduced to Ash’s parents who are struggling themselves with the lies from the past; and of course, Camila’s coworkers who have no idea about Camila’s connection to Ash.

Kat Latham’s LONDON LEGENDS is an engaging, amusing, refreshing and intoxicating series. We get up close and personal with the players of professional rugby-their sport, their history and their loves. There are moments of humor, passion, heartbreak and regret all wrapped up in a storyline with a happily ever after. At times, I was lost in the vast amount of rugby detail contained within TAMING THE LEGEND –rules, regulations, play by play information – as the storyline takes a different direction than the previous installments in the series. If you know something about rugby, then you will have no problem but for this reader my eyes glazed over as I had a difficult time ‘imagining’ the set up and scenarios. I needed a coaching handbook to understand the minute details.

TAMING THE LEGEND is a wonderful storyline; you will be hooked from the very start-no pun intended.

REVIEW

5 out of 5 for this reader folks!

SMOKIN’ HOT, TOE CURLING, YUMMILICIOUS! Yup …. just a few words to describe this hot hot read.

Playing Dirty by C.L. Parker is the first book in her Monkey Business Trio series and what a fantastic start. If you like erotica, sports and a two strong willed leads that are fuelled by that fine line of love and hate, then you will adore this book.

Shaw Matthews and Cassidy Whalen are two sport agents that have been pitted against each other to win a partnership within their agency. Both are worthy of this position, are excellent at what they do and have been advised to break the rules to sign the latest hot ticket player in the sports world. They also can’t stand each other, which makes this battle that much more bitter sweet.

Shaw is fierce and will go to all extremes to get this contract, including seducing his nemesis. Cassidy has had to battle up hill her entire career just because of her sex alone, so she sure isn’t going to lose this contract on account of a sexist pig who she believes has had everything handed to him on a silver platter. She may have to pull the one card she has never pulled … her sex appeal.

These two collide, go head to head and toe to toe, one up another and ultimately land in each others bed (or car, plane, wall .. you get the picture .. LOL) . Between these sheets the storm is as turbulent and possessive as are their verbal and strategic fights and before they know it, many lines are blurred and the real prize just may not be the coveted contract.

I seriously loved these two characters and I am admittedly a sucker for a fierce hot battle. C.L. Parker delivers realistic scenes (in my world at least ..WINK), characters and a clear lesson that what you see isn’t always what you get. Many other characters were introduced and given their own little side stories that just added to the heat, humour and story development. The reader is left on a cliffhanger begging her to hurry up and release the next book.

If you love the dirty talk, breaking rules and harsh truth in your books, then check this one out for sure!

Can’t Resist a Cowboy by Elizabeth Otto – a Review

Can’t Resist a Cowboy by Elizabeth Otto – a Review

Cant Resist a CowboyAmazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo

Description:
He’s always been her weakness…

Injured and discharged, Marine Levi Haywood has returned to his family’s ranch to heal and start a new life. After all, once a cowboy, always a cowboy. The only problem? Life at the ranch has moved on since he joined the service, and suddenly his role in the family business is much less clear. And things get a lot more confusing when the woman he left behind returns home.

Carrie Lynn Waite has never known a time when she didn’t love Levi. They were childhood sweethearts, but because of her health, she was forced to move to the city, away from the ranching life. Now Carrie’s come home only to learn her family’s ranch is in trouble and Levi is back, along with an undeniable attraction she can’t resist. But some things never change, forcing Carrie to choose the future laid out before her…or the cowboy she could never resist.

Review:

Loved this one, and no not just because it’s got a sexy cowboy in it. However, that was the icing on the cake. 😉  Can’t Resist a Cowboy is book three in Elizabeth Otto’s Paint River Ranch series. Now, I haven’t had the opportunity to have read the previous two books in this series, but it wasn’t a problem for me. This one could be read as a stand alone for anyone not familiar with this series like I was, but let me tell you I’m going back and reading the first two books. I really enjoyed this story and Elizabeth’s writing style and storytelling.

Can’t Resist a Cowboy is a story about love, love lost, a second chance for love again, friendship, and family relationships. In Can’t Resist a Cowboy we get to meet and learn all about who Levi Haywood and Carrie Lynn Waite are. I enjoyed both characters and found them to be perfect for one another. Levi for me was the perfect hero for this story. He’s strong, compassionate, loyal, loving, understanding, patient yet persistent, and sexy as all get out. Even though he came back from the war injured, not sure if he’d ever walk again, he battles through it and knows what it’s like to feel broken and lost. Now he’s moved forward with his life, but is still missing one thing, his ‘Sunshine’, enter Carrie Lynn, his childhood sweetheart. Carrie Lynn for me is the perfect match to our hero Levi. She’s smart, independent, loyal, feisty, loving, compassionate and understanding. Even though Carrie Lynn had to move away from the ranch because of her health, she never stopped loving anything about it. That’s why this time it’s even harder for her to have to leave again when the time comes. Even though she’s loosing her sight and is afraid, she admits she still loves Levi, never stopped, but is afraid to take the chance because of her failing sight and diabetes. Levi, having been where she is, knows what it’s like to feel that way and is the one who figures out her secret about her eyes. Once he finds out he’s determined to make her see they can have everything they’ve ever wanted and she doesn’t have to be afraid of what’s to come. He’ll always been there for her no matter what. The way Levi accepts her for who she is, and how Carrie Lynn accepts Levi for who he is after all that happened to him in the war is just beautiful to watch unfold.

Their story of love, fear of what’s to come and fear of just letting go and taking what they want/need is one of vulnerability and real emotion that just pours off the pages. I absolutely loved the vulnerability and emotion in these two characters, it just made them and the story all the more real to me. There were a couple of times they had me choked up and teary eyed. Carrie Lynn and Levi are well written characters that balance each other out perfectly. Alone they are two separate entities, but together they make up a whole and complete each other the only way they are meant to be. There can never be another for either of them. Theirs is a love meant to be, and when both accept their individual fears, and finally take the leap, their lives fall into place and they’re finally complete.

Can’t Resist a Cowboy is a fast paced but enjoyable read. Even though events move at a good pace, Otto never rushes the love between Carrie Lynn and Levi. Even though they were childhood sweethearts they have been apart for a number of years and things have changed in both their lives. We get to see Carrie Lynn and Levi re-discover their love and realize they never stopped loving each other and that their love is even stronger now. Otto writes a beautiful story about love and love lost, but you always have a second chance at that love if you can face your fears and take that jump no matter how scary things seem. As I said, I’m going back to read the previous two books in this series and am looking forward to more in this series. For anyone who likes a good cowboy story then this one’s for you.

Until next time, Happy Reading!

***After falling in love with “us” in the first two installments of the London Lovers Series, now…it’s Leslie’s turn in this spicy series stand alone.***

When Leslie Lincoln, a spunky, red-headed American, suffers an awkward moment with an arousingly-sexy British man—she thinks her life can’t get any more pathetic.

She’s done with men.
She doesn’t need them.
She especially doesn’t need their muscular thighs.
No siree, she’s going to forget all about the brooding, complicated, and seductive “Theo” who captivated her on the dance floor of a London nightclub.

Keep telling yourself that, Lez…..

Immersing herself into a new type of romantic cleanse, Leslie thinks she’ll never lay eyes on Theo again. But somehow, he’s managed to bulldoze his way back in—her cheetah-print onesie pajamas be damned.

He wants more.
She wants to run.
But he can’t seem to let her go.

Both of them have a past—and neither want to share.

How can love possibly survive in darkness?

Excerpt

“I think you need a spruce, Lez,” he states deadpan.
“A spruce? And what the hell does that entail?”
“Like a spa visit?” Angela asks excitedly.
“Not a spa exactly. More like…a cleanse.” Frank fixes a salacious grin on me as he appears excited for what he has in mind. I squirm, feeling nervous about where the hell this is going.
“I’ve done cleanses before, they are miserable,” Angela says, dramatically raising her glass and taking a drink.
“This is a different kind of cleanse. It could be miserable for Leslie, but I know many mates who would bloody love it.”
“What’s involved?” I ask warily. Why the hell would I agree to something that might make me miserable?
“It’s…what I would call…a seven-step program. You have to follow all of the steps in order to gain the maximum benefits and achieve full happiness. Do you agree to it?”
“Agree to what? To doing this crazy cleanse that I have no clue what’s even involved? Absolutely not! I can’t even drink black coffee, Frank. If this cleanse drink tastes disgusting, I can’t do it.”
“Nothing will taste disgusting on this cleanse, I assure you,” he replies cryptically.
“I don’t know.”
“You need this, Leslie. You’ve been in a funk ever since Finley got engaged to that sex monster, Brody.”
I blanch. Frank has a huge man-crush on Brody. It all started when he got a full-frontal Magic Mike image of Brody and Finley one morning at the house. Brody’s a good-looking guy, don’t get me wrong. But I see him more like a brother.
“So, this cleanse you’re suggesting will get me out of this funk?”
“Without question,” Frank says, and turns his wide brown eyes on me. He’s sincere. I can see it in his demeanor. He genuinely wants me to do this.
“I’m not interested in a boyfriend, Frank. I don’t want a relationship.”
“That’s not what this is about. I promise.”
I smirk sneakily and Frank jumps up thrusting his hands into the air in victory, knocking his chair down in the meantime. Several people gawk at his obnoxious display.
Holy balls. This is Frank. What have I gotten myself into?

Q&A

Congratulations Amy  on the release of LONDON BOUND.

TRC:   We would like to start with some background information. Would you please tell us something about yourself?

Amy:  I¹m a goof who stumbled into this writing endeavor because I had a tragic, true story to tell. I then ventured into romance and the rest is history!

TRC:   LONDON BOUND is the latest release in your London Lovers series. Would you please tell us something about the premise?

Amy:  London Bound is Book 3 in the series and follow the BFF, Leslie. It can be read as a stand alone. Leslie Lincoln is the fashionably crazy best friend that everyone wants. She¹s supportive and loving and wild and hilarious. But she¹s got secrets that she¹s been keeping from her best friend and it¹s a large reason why she¹s never opened herself up to love. When she meets the brooding and demanding Then all bets are off and things really escalate.

TRC:   What challenges or difficulties (research, logistics, background) did you encounter writing this particular story and series?

Amy:  I wrote all 3 of my London Lovers Series books before ever stepping foot in London! I¹ve since been there, so it¹ll be interesting to see how book 4 change as a result. I imagine not very much but I¹m very happy to report that London truly is just as amazing as I always pictured in my head. So with that said, I did a lot of London research! Lots of looking on trip advisor, neighborhoods, the works. I even chatted with some Air BnB hosts about various parts of the city. London feels like a second home to me now! It¹s pretty awesome.

TRC:  When writing a storyline, do the characters direct the writing or do you direct the characters?

Amy:  Characters direct the writing. 100%. I don¹t ever know how I¹m going to end my books until my characters tell me. In London Bound I can honestly say no one was more surprised by the ending than me. I never thought I¹d write that type of ending in a book, but it came to me in the shower one day and I knew I had to write it. I love love love the ending. One of my reviewers called it ³disgustingly beautiful.² J

TRC:   The mark of a good writer is to pull the reader into the storyline so that they experience the emotions along with the characters. What do you believe a writer must do to make this happen? Where do you believe writer¹s fail in this endeavor?

Amy:  I think readers have to have a strong connection to the character they are reading about in order to feel all the dang feels. You need to know the heroine (or hero) to have empathy for them or it just won¹t happen. It¹s hard to do! And not all readers will connect and some readers will totally connect! Reading is so subjective, so what one person may love, another may hate. It¹s a crazy crazy industry.

TRC:  Thank you Amy for taking the time to answer a few quick questions.

About The author

Amy DawsAmy Daws is a goof of epic proportions. She enjoys making dumb videos and laughing at herself…a lot. It gets awkward. She thinks she should have tried her hand at improv theater but figured she’d learn how life looks behind the lens of a camera first.

She also thinks talking about herself in the third person isn’t awkward at all.

Amy lives in South Dakota with her husband, Kevin, and their miracle daughter, Lorelei. The long-awaited birth of Lorelei is what inspired Amy’s first book, Chasing Hope, and her passion for writing.

Amy’s contemporary romance books are a part of the The London Lovers Series and currently have two installments out with more to come. Her writing style is emotional and self-deprecating with awkward humor sprinkled in. Basically, if she makes you cry happy and sad tears…she’s achieved her goal. Extra points if you have to blow your nose.

Amy’s inspiration for writing is and always will be her six precious angel babies and her daughter, Lorelei. On most nights, you can find Amy and her family dancing to Strawberry Shortcake’s theme song or stuffing themselves inside children’s-sized playhouses because there is nothing they wouldn’t do for their little miracle.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date May 11, 2015

Letting go never felt so good.

Carlisle Queen is dying and no one knows it.

Burying the pain of losing her friends and her professional swimming career in a terrorist attack, America’s former sweetheart dulls her pain with drugs, pills and parties. The bomb left her with more than nightmares; shrapnel is lodged in her back and inching closer to her spinal cord. When the doctors tell her paralysis is inevitable, she decides to take her own life rather than face a lifetime in a wheelchair.

Mateo Butler isn’t anyone’s hero.

Reeling from the death of his little sister and his own cowardice, he spends his nights partying and his days ignoring the medical school acceptance letters and his parents’ concerned phone calls. Just a couple of months from graduation, he’s facing a future filled with shame and regret. The last thing he needs is to meet the woman who compels him to be a better man.

Can they save each other?

When Carlisle and Mateo meet, the chemistry between them is combustible. They play, party and hide their true selves until one night turns their lust into something more…something real. As secrets are revealed and walls collapse, what they were and what they might become doesn’t matter as much as who they are together. When the choice comes down to life or death, can love be their salvation?

••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: SALVATION is the second installment in Robin Covington’s new adult, contemporary Nashville Nights romance series. This is college students Mateo Butler and Olympic gold medalist for swimming Carlisle Queen’s storyline. SALVATION can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Some of the previous storyline characters play a small secondary and supporting role in the novel.

Told from alternating first person points of view (Carlisle and Mateo) SALVATION follows the building relationship and fall out between Carlisle Queen and Mateo Butler. Carlisle barely survived a terrorist bomb that killed her best friend and boyfriend Aaron, but in the ensuing time, our heroine has had a difficult time with recovery and grief. The doctors were unable to remove all of the shrapnel that is slowly edging towards her spine leaving Carlisle in constant pain and wondering when the her time will end. Hiding her pain with drugs and sex, Carlisle targets Mateo Butler, her Spanish TA, as her next fix and conquest. But things don’t go according to plan when Carlisle begins to fall for the sexy premed student interrupting her future plans -rather than be wheelchair bound the rest of her life, Carlisle opts to end her own life.

The relationship between our leading couple is one of immediate attraction but Carlisle doesn’t do relationships or love knowing she won’t be around long enough for anyone to care. Mateo is a young man, consumed with guilt, over the death of his sister, and sees Carlisle’s choice as selfish and wrong. When an opportunity presents itself for surgery, Carlisle knows the results may not be the happily ever after everyone had hoped.

The world building follows the relationship, friendships, and choices presented for a young woman whose life is fragile and precarious. There are moments of heartbreak and personal betrayal; romance and love; moving forward and letting go. Robin Covington isn’t afraid to tackle the controversial issues- what would you do in the same situation?

excerpt

I lift up and off her body, slowly pressing kisses on any patch of exposed skin I can find. Her skin is like silk against my lips, her taste salty and sweet.
“I could eat you up.” I take a quick bite of her ass and tell her just how amazing she is. “You. Are. So. Fucking. Delicious.”
We lower ourselves to the seat, a tangle of laughter and limbs. When was the last time I laughed with a lover? Never. Sure, we had a good time. Enjoyed the moment and each other. I didn’t stay around or keep them around long enough to laugh together.
But I’m not in any hurry to go anywhere right now. I dispose of the condom, right my clothes and settle lengthwise across the seat, pulling her down alongside of me. The music from the festival continues, providing a perfect backdrop to our silence.
“We need to do that in a bed sometime,” I say, tracing a finger up and down her arm. “I’d like to actually see you completely naked.”
Carlisle stiffens slightly and I wonder what I’ve stepped in this time.
“I’m not girlfriend or sleepover material,” she answers, her voice soft but firm.
“And I’m not asking you to move in. I’d just like to fuck you, roll over and pretend to sleep while you pick your clothes off the floor and sneak out.” I press a kiss against her hair and navigate the land mine field I’ve clearly landed in. “You can even have a walk of shame.”
“You’re kind of an asshole.”
“I really am but I’d still like to hang out with you again.”
“Don’t you have medical school or some other time-consuming activity coming up?” She looks up at me, her expression indecipherable but concerned.
“That’s the plan.” If she’s not girlfriend material, I’m not sharing material and that includes my shit about school, my sister, or any of it.
Carlisle remains silent in my arms, the music from the stage drifting over us with the breeze. I get her, I think. She’s not cold or stuck-up. A part of her is closed off except when I have my cock buried in her body. The couple of times we’ve been together, I’ve seen who she probably was before her body and her life was blown apart and then paraded through the media in the last eighteen months. When something like that happens to you, it is a rare person who can move forward without leaving the old you behind.
“Look, my wingman status remains even if we never fuck again. I’m screwed up and so are you but when I’m fucking you I forget about it for a while. I like sex with you and I like hanging out with you. Nothing more than that.” I put a finger under her chin and tip her face up to look at me. Her green eyes are open but clouded with her hesitation. “I don’t like to chase women, especially ones who have no desire to be caught. You have my number. You call me when you want to have some fun together. You control it all. Sound good?”
She watches me, her gaze assessing until she rolls her eyes and shakes her head. “Oh hell. You might be a nice guy after all.”
I laugh, a little confused. “I try not to be a dick as a general rule but my ‘Y’ chromosome gets in the way once in a while.”
Carlisle laughs, lying back down on my chest. “For the record, I’m not screwed up. I’m okay.”
“Really? Okay?” I don’t try to hide my skepticism.
“Yep.” She nods against my chest before placing a kiss on my collarbone. “And by okay I mean that I’m seriously fucked in the head but I’m sick of talking about it.”
Oh hell, this one is just about perfect. I look up at the stars and wonder what I’m doing with this girl.

About the book: Release Date May 9, 2015

France 1782…AN INNOCENT IS TAKEN

All Claire Donet knew was the world inside the convent walls in Saint-Denis. She had no idea her beloved papa was a pirate. But when he seized Simon Powell’s schooner, the English privateer decided to take the thing his enemy held most dear…her.

A BATTLE IS JOINED

The waters between France and England roil with the clashes of Claire’s father and her captor as the last year of the American Revolution rages on the sea, spies lurk in Paris and Claire’s passion for the English captain rises.

Review:
To Tame the Wind begins with Claire having sneaked out the convent in order to see for herself the masquerade ball that she’s heard so much about, only to discover that her young and frail friend, Elise, had followed her into the night. Even though Claire tries to convince Elise that she needs to return home, her young friend will not hear of it. Claire relents and allows Elise to tag along. Once the two girls near the grand estate where the ball is being held, the music floats through the air and Claire is immediately drawn in. She tells Elise to stay put as she seeks a spot closer in order to see the party for herself. Claire climbs a tree and the sight before her has her completely enthralled. She sees gloriously dressed men and women dancing and longs to maybe someday be a part of such a scene.

It’s not long before a man with golden hair, and a woman dressed as a hussar walk out into the night, and end up at the tree where Claire is perched. Things turn a bit amorous between the wayward partygoers and Claire can’t believe her eyes, nor the feelings that stir within her. Suddenly, a streak of lightning lights up the sky and things go a little haywire for Claire as she falls out of the tree and is discovered by the handsome Englishman with the golden hair and the amber eyes, who initially mistakes her for a party guest, but soon realizes she’s an innocent young woman and sends her on her way. As she and Elise frantically make their way back home, they are completely drenched by the storm. Little does she know how much her life will change due to her decisions made that night.

The story then fast forwards two years and finds Claire still in the convent. She has made the decision to take a vow to become a member of the Order, only to find out that her papa has arranged her marriage. The Reverend Mother doesn’t think that Claire is wanting to take her vows for the right reasons, and also doesn’t think that her papa will allow it, but she leaves it up to Claire to convince her papa. But, that convincing will never get the chance to come to fruition as Claire is awakened in the middle of the night and kidnapped from the convent. Once she sees her captor, she almost can’t believe her own eyes, because before her is the ever handsome golden haired Englishman that had unknowingly set her heart aflutter so long ago. Unfortunately, he tells her things that she just cannot believe. Her beloved papa was not a pirate, but a “man of business”. But, Captain Simon Powell assures her that there are things in motion that her beloved papa will have to address if she is to be freed. It doesn’t take Simon long to realize that Claire is not as meek as she first seemed, but more like a wild wind blowing through and determined to make her own place in the world. Claire soon realizes that Captain Simon Powell is a man of his word and realizes that he would never harm her. Along with the new found knowledge that privateers, pirates and spies abound, will Claire be able to resist the noble Captain who only wants to get his ship and his men back safely? And, will Simon be able to tame the wind? Well, my friends, you’ll have to read to find out. And, oh, what a read it is!

Regan Walker has once again written a wonderful story that will have you hooked from the first page. Claire Donet is such a wonderfully written character. She is kind and compassionate, as well as fiercely loyal and loving. I love the rebellious streak that we are privy to, as does Simon. The chemistry between these two is palpable. He is just as loyal and compassionate and loving as Claire, but will move heaven and earth to make things right. And, once he decides on all of the things that need to be righted, nothing will stop him. I’d love to say more about what transpires between them, but do not want to spoil what is a great story.

I’ve told you before, but I feel I need to tell you again. No one writes like Regan Walker. She effortlessly weaves historical facts into her fictional stories so well that you will find yourself questioning your own history lessons. You can absolutely feel her passion for her craft as she tells her tales, whether on the high seas of the English Channel, or on the cobble stone streets of London or Paris. And, I don’t just mean her passion for writing a story. I mean her passion for making sure that her stories ring true, whether it’s the sound of the ocean, the smells in the air or the character’s feelings. Her world building is phenomenal. There is political intrigue and a bit of mystery and a beautifully developed romance, but I’ve come to expect nothing less from Regan Walker. The only problem I have with her stories is that I have to wait for the next one! I have it on good authority that the next installment will be Claire’s beloved papa, Jean Donet’s story. If you’re a fan of this genre, you are sorely missing out if you’ve not read any of Ms. Walker’s books. Well done, Regan Walker! Very very very very well done!!

Making Characters Endearing and Believable by Regan Walker

Vickie asked me to share how I develop my characters. And I will. But first, I thought to share what some reviewers have said about them:

For Racing with the Wind:

26 reviewers “I loved the characters and story.”
23 reviewers: “This author has researched and presented an historically accurate world for the actions of her characters.”

And from my first medieval, The Red Wolf’s Prize:

25 reviewers: “The plot was interesting, and the characters well written.”
And “very endearing characters.”

Vickie’s own review:

“Serena is absolutely my favorite heroine dreamed up by Regan Walker to date! Her loyalty, her fierceness and her heart will endear her to everyone who reads this story. Her understanding of what her people want and need is so touching. She is truly a force to be reckoned with. Renaud is a perfect match for her. He is as loyal and fierce as she is, and their chemistry is palpable. The cast of supporting characters is terrific in their own right.”

To me this just proves how important characters are to readers. They want to fall in love with the heroine as well as the hero. If you have endearing secondary characters, so much the better. I know that’s what I look for in a romance. Since I was a reader before an author, that is also how I think about my characters.

How do I do make my characters believable and endearing? For me, it’s all about the story. First I research the historical setting. Then I come up with the idea of the hero or heroine, sometimes both at once. I look for traits that would make them endearing in that time in history. All of my heroines are strong and the heroes who win them are stronger still. I let the history lead me to who they are. Would he be a British lord masquerading as a gallant spy on Napoleon like Lord Ormond in Racing with the Wind? Or, might he be a jaded sea captain sailing off to investigate a pirate for the Prince Regent as Captain Nick Powell in Wind Raven? Or, perhaps the hero might be a privateer spy for the Crown wrestling with a French pirate, and resisting the charms of the innocent heroine as in my latest work, To Tame the Wind?

Once I have my history and the lead characters I begin to write the opening scenes. Then, other characters come to me, companions and acquaintances of the hero and heroine. I move into their environment in my imagination, whether it’s a mansion, a schooner or a medieval castle. I get a feel for it visually, the daily life and who’s doing what. Since The Red Wolf’s Prize, I now use Pinterest for my image research for my characters and setting. Once I light on an image, I write to it.

When I found this image, I knew I’d found Elijah, the wizened old bosun on the Fairwinds in To Tame the Wind:
Elijah from To Tame the WindWhen I first conceived of Elijah he didn’t wear a knit cap or smoke a pipe. But once this image was in my head, ever thereafter he did. I could see him using his pipe to gesture and his hair blowing around his face when the wind captured a few strands. Being able to visually conceive of your characters adds details you might have overlooked otherwise. And it helps you make characters distinctive and endearing. Of course, I have always done this, even before I began using Pinterest.

Lord Ormond, the hero in Racing with the Wind looked like a young Clark Gable to me:

Clark Gable as Lord OrmondAnd he acted just like him, arrogant and sure of himself and what he wanted, including Lady Mary Campbell. So it was no surprise to me when he began ordering her around or when she informed him she would not do as he asked.

Once I have my main characters, it’s like watching a movie in my head. I put them int he setting and watch them interact. I learn about them as people. That’s how I knew that Claire Donet, the heroine in To Tame the Wind, would be a constant trial to the nuns in her convent school in France. It was no surprise to me when she snuck out to watch a masquerade ball. And I knew, notwithstanding her rebellious nature, she’d have a soft heart that would break more than once during the story.

I force my characters to act consistently. If my heroine would rebel but never whine, then she never whines. If my hero would not apologize, then he never does, at least not until something happens that changes him.

To me, my characters are real. Oh I don’t mean they are real people—though some are real historic figures—but my image of them is so real I see them as people I could have known if I’d lived in that time in history. I imagine some of them as friends, and some as evil miscreants. When I finish writing a book, I experience a sense of loss. It feels like a friend has moved away. I miss the world I’ve created and the characters in it. I can’t wait to dive into the next book and meet a whole slew of new characters. See if you don’t agree when you read my books!

about the author

Regan WalkerI didn’t start out as a writer of romance, oh no. Although I loved to write stories as a child, by the time I got to college, more serious pursuits were encouraged. So, naturally, I became a lawyer. Who needs adverbs as a lawyer? But after years of serving clients in private practice and several stints in high levels of government, I decided it was time for a change. My work had given me a love of international travel (I’ve been to over 40 countries…) and a feel for the demands of the “Crown” on its subjects. Hence, my first novels are all about a demanding Prince Regent who thinks of his subjects as his private talent pool.

I promise my novels will always sweep you away to another time and another place. I want you to experience adventure as well as love.

I live in San Diego with my wonderful Golden Retriever “Link.” I have one son who is a young entrepreneur and, though he looks like a Highlander of old, he would never read a romance novel. So like a man, no?

Review:

Witches with the Enemy by Barb Hendee is the 3rd book in her Mist-Torn Witches series.   I love this series, as it has two wonderful heroines, exciting storylines, and well written. Celine and Amelie are our heroines, and they are seers. Celine can see the future, and Amelie can see the past, just by touching the person. They both work for Prince Anton, who is the good prince in comparison to his evil brother, Prince Damek. After solving cases in the first two books, Celine and Amelie have been summoned to help Damek find the killer who is trying to sabotage his marriage plans. Prince Anton, goes with Celine and Amelie, to protect them, since he doesn’t trust his brother, as he knows both Celine and Amelie escaped with their lives when living in Damek’s territory.

I really do love Anton, as we can see he is falling hard for Celine, but knows as Prince, he cannot marry a commoner.   Celine too finds herself attracted to Anton, but does her best to be his seer, with no romantic entanglements.   This is a forbidden romance that is slowly building, though nothing as of yet. The same can be said of Amelie and Jaromir, which we can see their attraction, but both try to avoid those feelings.

Though the markings are there, this is not a romance but is a thrilling suspense mystery in a race to the finish, before more murders happen. There are so many twists and turns that you need to pay attention so that you do not miss anything.

This is a wonderful adventurous series, in an interesting world, with some great characters. In all three books, Celine and Amelie are the main characters and worthy heroines. It is fun to watch them use their seer ability to discover the truth, whether the past or the future. Anton and Jaromir are also great heroes. Hendee has created excellent villains, and nice secondary characters. I wholly recommend you to read this series, as it is a fun exciting read. I do suggest you start with the first book, as it lays the ground work for the world, and Celine and Amelie.
