The summer after You and MeAmazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / The Book Depository / BAM / Apple /Indiebound

Description:
Sunbathing, surfing, eating funnel cake on the boardwalk—Lucy loves living on the Jersey Shore. For her, it’s not just the perfect summer escape, it is home. And as a local girl, she knows not to get attached to the tourists. They breeze in over Memorial Day weekend, crowding the shore and stealing moonlit kisses, only to pack up their beach umbrellas and empty promises on Labor Day. Lucy wants more from love than a fleeting romance, even if that means keeping her distance from her summertime neighbor and crush, Connor.

Then Superstorm Sandy tears apart her barrier island, briefly bringing together a local girl like herself and a vacationer like Connor. Except nothing is the same in the wake of the storm. And day after day, week after week, Lucy is left to pick up the pieces of her broken heart and broken home. Now with Memorial Day approaching and Connor returning, will it be a summer of fresh starts or second chances?

Review:

The Summer After You and Me by Jennifer Salvato Doktorski is a sweet YA story about family, friendship and romance. It takes place in the Jersey shore, during the aftermath of hurricane Sandy. Lucy is our heroine and she is the protagonist that drives this story. 8 months after Sandy destroyed so much of the community where she lives; Lucy is back home with her parents and brother.   Memorial Day is close, which signals the start of summer, and the tourists will be visiting in droves, which due to the ongoing restoration, doesn’t sit well with the local residents. Lucy is working part time at the local clam restaurant, while also doing volunteer work that she hopes will help her get a scholarship to be a marine mammalogist.

As Lucy prepares to go to work, she spots Connor, who spends the summers with his family in the house next to Lucy.   The last time she last saw him was right before the storm hit, after he had kissed her, opening up a possible new relationship; but he never called her all these months, as he had promised. Giving up on any chance of a relationship with him, Lucy began dating her best friend Andrew, and now that Connor is back, she tries hard to ignore him.

Connor’s reputation as a womanizer, and the fact that he is a seasonal resident, makes him not a favorite among the locals, which includes Lucy’s brother, Liam, who hates him. This is also a very nice story of family, and friendships, as they all try to recover and rebuild their town from the devastation of Sandy. I thought that the first half of the book was somewhat slow. It did pick up a lot in the second half, which turned this into an enjoyable story.

Lucy slowly begins to realize she had no romantic feeling for Andrew, and that she still felt something for Connor. This is a very slow to build relationship, which will affect all those around Lucy. Her friends become upset that she never told them about her feelings toward Connor, and her brother really bad to Lucy when he finds out. For the majority of the book, Liam was nasty and provocative toward his sister, helping pull her friends away, as he could not control his hatred of Connor.

This turned out to be a very nice sweet story that will see the beginnings of a romance, forgiveness, rebuilding of lives and friendships, as well as togetherness for families. With the real life background of the Jersey shore devastation, and the people helping one another to rebuild their town from the hurricane, this was a very nice and emotional read.

excerpt

Connor opened the gorgeous double doors, each with half-moon stained-glass windows on the top, and motioned me inside. “After you.”

The house had that distinct yet hard-to-describe smell of a beach home that had been closed up for a while. I walked to the center of the high-ceilinged foyer and immediately pictured pine garland and twinkling white lights wrapped around the sweeping banister.

“Wow. I’d love to spend Christmas here,” I said and immediately regretted being so sappy.

Connor smiled. “You could fit a twelve-foot tree in this hallway.”

I admit, over the years I’ve had my share of Connor-centric fantasies. However the image of him watching his children pad down the stairs on Christmas morning had never been one of them…until that very second. I liked thinking about Connor that way.

“Come on. You’ve got to see the master bedroom.”

The wholesome image of a Malloy family Christmas vanished. Aha, I thought. That was the Connor I knew.

“Uh-uh,” I said. “The widow’s walk. I want to go there first.”

“Race you,” he said and took off running.

He beat me up the two flights and was waiting for me in the third-floor hallway toward the back of the house. Off the hallway was an art studio, with a drafting table and a bookcase. There was also a telescope standing near the window.

“Follow me.” He crossed the studio and unlocked the deadbolt to the narrow door leading outside.

“You’ve already been up there?”

“First thing I did when I got here,” Connor said.

“Not the master bedroom?”

“Nah, that’s the first thing I wanted to do when you got here.”

I thought it was just more flirty banter, but Connor’s flushed cheeks looked as warm as my body felt. He stared at me for a beat too long and my throat constricted. I was suddenly aware that I’d left the house with slept-on hair and no mascara. The look on Connor’s face told me he hadn’t noticed. His eyes never left mine.

Finally he said, “Come on, Luce. I’ll follow you.” The space was tight when I passed in front of him, and the closeness of his body gave me the shivers. I opened the door and stepped outside onto a small patio. I walked toward the wrought-iron spiral staircase that lead to the widow’s walk on the roof and placed my hand on the railing. My knees felt shaky as I began the climb, but I never looked back.

Grave Phantoms
Roaring Twenties series – Book #3
by Jenn Bennett
Release Date: May 5, 2015

Grave PhatomsAmazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / The Book Depository / BAM

Description:
Feisty flapper Astrid Magnusson is home from college and yearning for the one thing that’s always been off limits: Bo Yeung, her notorious bootlegging brother’s second-in-command. Unfortunately her dream of an easy reunion proves difficult after a violent storm sends a mysterious yacht crashing into the Magnussons’ docks. What’s worse, the boat disappeared a year ago, and the survivors are acting strangely…

Bo has worked with the Magnusson family for years, doing whatever is needed, including keeping his boss’s younger sister out of trouble—and his hands to himself. Of course, that isn’t so easy after Astrid has a haunting vision about the yacht’s disappearance, plunging them into an underground world of old money and dark magic. Danger will drive them closer together, but surviving their own forbidden feelings could be the bigger risk.

Review:

Grave Phantoms by Jenn Bennett is her 3rd book in her Roaring Twenties series, and is the final book in this series. The Magnusson brothers, Winter and Lowe have been the heroes of the first two books. From the start, we have waited for Astrid, the younger Magnusson to have her story. Bo Yeung is our hero, and the man Astrid is destined to be with, as we have known how both have secretly felt about each other. Bo is the right hand of Winter, in the Magnusson bootlegging business, and he is Chinese.

In 1928, during the prohibition era, where this takes place, any kind of relationship between them is forbidden and illegal, but both Astrid and Bo find themselves wanting more than just a friendship. Bo has always watched over Astrid, and now with her home from college for a few weeks, she is not a little girl anymore.

While looking for Bo on their dock, Astrid finds herself accidently in the middle of a strange phenomenon, which is a paranormal mystery that will drive this story. It seems a yacht has appeared on the dock that was mysteriously missing for a year.   After touching a fallen object, Astrid has visions of the past, especially the missing ship and the people on it. Her aura has changed, and between her and Bo they need to resolve the mystery to save Astrid from the dangers it is causing.

What follows is an wild and exciting adventure that will put them in the middle of dark magic from the past that will rear its ugly head. We will get a dose of history in this mystery. The romance between Astrid and Bo heats up, and they are determined to solve the mystery, and find a way for them to be together. I thought Astrid was a great character, and loved her strength, her bubbly vivacious personality, and her fearlessness. She and Bo made a great couple.

Jen Bennett did a wonderful job putting the final pieces to this fascinating trilogy of the Magnusson family in an era of the prohibition and the Roaring Twenties. I loved the epilogue allowing us to see them all in the future. This was a fun and exciting series, with great characters.   I wholly recommend you read this series.

For the past year, Rob and his team have been hunting the Harvester, a serial killer who ritualistically murders new mothers and vanishes with their infants. What Rob doesn’t need is another case, especially one involving his ex-fiancée.

Then Faye is assaulted, and Rob realizes the cases are connected. She may hold the answers he needs to find the elusive killer. But the more they investigate, the more complex the situation becomes. Can they set the past aside and work together, or will the Harvester and his followers reap another prize?

•••••••••••••••

REVIEW: The White Carnation is book One of the new Harvester Series by author Susanne Matthews. This series starts off with a real thriller.

Reporter Faye Lewis has lost her place on the crime beat and been demoted to weddings and dog shows. All due to printing some information she should have checked first, causing problems for the paper. She also threw her engagement ring back into the face of her ex-fiancée, Detective Rob Halliday, who she thought had betrayed her with false information. (What do they say about assumptions?) Anyway, that’s the setup.

Faye gets a call from her BFF’s mom asking her to stop over she needs to discuss something with her. When she gets there she finds Mrs. Green dead on the floor with her throat slit and the apartment a destroyed mess. Shocked and ill, the only one she can think to call is Rob…and so it begins!

I don’t do spoilers, I believe in the complete enjoyment of a good book, and believe me this is one of the best romantic crime stories you will find. I can’t wait for the next one in this series! Okay, well just one spoiler…someone is using exotic drugs to rape women, impregnating them, then abducting them in their third trimester. Some bodies of the mothers are found ritualistically cleaned and posed…they have dubbed this killer The Harvester!

Be prepared for great storytelling, emotional ups and downs as the two lovers find themselves drawn back together only better this time around. This is a magnificently crafted tale of intrigue, murder, rape, child stealing and terrorists/fanatics; with a wonderful romance flowing through the whole thing.

Susanne Matthews is a talented author with many books to her credit, this new series takes it all to a new level!

Grab you favorite beverage, tissues and some snacks and get ready for a really exciting ride!

Her Wild HeroAmazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / The Book Depository / BAM / Apple

Description:

Department of Covert Operations Training Officer Kendra Carlsen has been begging her boss to let her go into the field for years. When he finally agrees to send her along on a training exercise in Costa Rica, she’s thrilled.

Bear-shifter Declan MacBride, on the other hand, is anything but pleased. He’s been crushing on Kendra since he started working at the DOC seven years ago. Spending two weeks in the same jungle with her is putting a serious strain on him.

When the team gets ambushed, Kendra and Declan are forced to depend on each other. But the bear-shifter soon discovers that fighting bloodthirsty enemies isn’t nearly as hard as fighting his attraction to the beautiful woman he’ll do anything to protect.

The steamy Costa Rican jungle brings out the bear in Declan MacBride when he and new operative Kendra Carlsen are ambushed. In the midst of relying on each other to survive, and fighting his explosive attraction to Kendra, this shifter is about to lose control…

 Review:

Her Wild Hero by Paige Tyler is the 3rd book in her X-Ops series. This is a great exciting series by Tyler, with a fabulous ensemble cast of characters that we get to see in each book. Her Wild Hero belongs to Kendra Carlsen and Declan MacBride.

Kendra, who is a trainer and researcher, finally gets her wish, being sent on a mission with one of the teams to Costa Rica. It’s supposed to be a fact finding mission, totally safe for her to get her feet wet. Declan has always had a thing for Kendra, but after not getting anywhere, he has given up. When the team is ambushed by hybrids; Tate and some of his team escape, with Kendra and Declan missing. Tate calls for help from the other X-Ops team, such as Landon and Ivy, and he expresses concern that John, the man who sent them on the mission is not to be trusted.

Declan, who is a bear shifter, does all he can to keep Kendra safe, as they fight off the dangerous and volatile hybrids. He devises ways to hide their scent, as they hide from them, hoping for rescue. With each passing day, Declan tries to fight off his attraction to Kendra, which has truly never gone away. Kendra finds herself becoming more and more attracted to Declan, and can’t understand why he ignores her flirting attempts. While they are hiding in a cave, recuperating from their lasted fight for survival, they both succumb to their lust for each other. Kendra learns the truth about Declan’s former fiancée, and why he was trying keep his distance from her. But now their romance has heated up, but the danger has also escalated with the hybrids on their trail, being far more advanced than originally thought.

While the team has trouble tracking them, they must also fight off the hybrids that keep coming. I do not want to give any spoilers. What follows is an exciting action-packed adventure that races to an exciting climax. Will the team find Declan and Kendra in time? Will Kendra erase Declan’s doubt that once she sees his bear shifter self, she will run away? Who is the betrayer that was behind the ambush?

Paige Tyler once again creates a wonderful, pulse pounding story, and another wonderful sexy couple. I also love how she brings so many of the characters from earlier stories to be a major part of each story. If you enjoy stories that have suspense, excitement, dangerous missions, and fantastic characters, not to mention the hot and sexy couples, then you need to read the X-Ops series. Her Wild Hero continues the trend of wonderful edge of your seat stories.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date May 5, 2015

Yield (verb): to surrender or submit (oneself) to another

Macy Carrington is broken. The strong, beautiful woman that I’ve unwittingly fallen in love with is all kinds of broken from a secret that she has carried for far too long.

A secret so dark, she has gone to great lengths to protect it.

A secret that I’m terrified will one day rip her away from me.

The only time Macy frees herself from the darkness is when she is naked and in my arms. When I am deep inside her body, there is nothing she fears. When she wraps herself around me, she is at peace.

If she would only yield to me completely, I know I can set her free.

* Yield is the final book the Legal Affairs trilogy of Cal and Macy’s story. Clash and Grind, Books #1 and 2, can be found on this retailer’s site for purchase.

**Due to sexual content and heavy subject matter of an abusive nature, this book may not be suitable for all audiences.

•••••••••••••••

REVIEW: YIELD (Cal and Macy) is the third and final installment in Sawyer Bennett’s A Legal Affairs Story serial- focusing on Macy Carrington and Cal Carson. Because YIELD is part of a serial storyline, it cannot be read as a stand alone.

Told from Cal’s first person point of view with additional information revealed through Macy’s journal and diaries, YIELD follows the investigation and subsequent charges against Quarter Mine –the Carrington family owned billion dollar business- and Macy’s connections to the people involved. When Macy refuses to speak to the investigators, Cal begins to dig a little deeper and uncovers the demons that still haunt Macy today.

YIELD is a heartbreaking and emotional storyline as Macy must confront the past. Cal is a protective, alpha male who is willing to risk everything to protect Macy; Macy is a woman who past controls the world in which she lives.

The relationship between Cal and Macy continues to be sexually energetic, provocative and experimental. Macy uses sex as a means to control her demons and in this Cal becomes the target of her aggression. Macy likes a little kink with her sexual activities.

YIELD is the culmination of three installments that sees our hero protecting the woman with whom he has fallen in love; and a heroine who steps out of her protective bubble to see the truth is finally revealed.

Sawyer Bennett writes an intense story of romance, retribution, heartbreak and love. The characters are engaging, controversial, charismatic and inspiring. The love scenes are sexually graphic, passionate and emotional. Cal and Macy will capture your heart; Sawyer Bennett will capture your imagination.

Clash (verb): to conflict, disagree.

It might be fair to say that I despise Macy Carrington. She slings insults with precision, not caring about the destruction she leaves in her wake. We clash in a battle of wills every time we’re around each other, and yet… I still fantasize about being lodged deep within her body.

Clash (verb): to come together or collide.

I have never encountered someone that grates me the way Cal Carson does. His pompous, arrogant demeanor. A holier-than-thou attitude. Any interaction with “Saint Cal” ends in a verbal clash of epic proportions, and yet… there’s no one I’d rather have in my bed than him.

Clash (noun): a battle, fight or skirmish.

Her breathy moans mingle with the sound of our flesh coming together, clashing with the silence that surrounds us, dispelling any notions I once had about Macy Carrington.

Maybe I can break down her walls if we can call a truce to this battle.

He whispers filthy words in my ear, provoking feelings I never knew were possible. The burning desire in his touch clashes with everything I once believed about Cal Carson.

Maybe he can be the balm I need to soothe my broken soul, if only temporarily.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date April 21, 2015

Grind (verb): to weaken or destroy gradually

Macy Carrington is not the woman I once thought her to be.

What she does not allow her heart to feel, she gives with her body. The sex between us is explosive and depraved. I’ve done things with her that would never have crossed my wildest imagination, and I can’t ever seem to get enough.

But now I want more from her. I want to figure out her dark secret, expose it and then help her to heal from it. I know, without a doubt, that Macy is capable of love, and I will grind her down until I make her accept the truth of it.

Grind (verb): to wear down, polish, or sharpen by friction

Cal Carson is not the man I once thought him to be.

Strong, determined, sexy as hell and a beast in the bedroom. He is every woman’s fantasy.

He is my fantasy.

But no matter how hard Cal tries to grind me down, my heart and secrets are mine and mine alone.

Halfway Perfect by Julie Cross & Mark Perini – a Review

Halfway Perfect by Julie Cross & Mark Perini – a Review

Halfway Perfect

Amazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / The Book Depository / BAM

Description:
Eve’s time as a fashion model nearly destroyed her-now she’s determined to build a career behind the camera lens. But landing a coveted photography internship brings her face to face with her dark past-and her ex.

While Eve is snapping pictures, up-and-coming male model Alex is launching his career-which, for him, involves maintaining a fake relationship with his (secretly) underage co-star, Elana.

But Alex is falling for Eve, and Eve won’t let herself get hurt again. If Alex can pull off a fake love with Elana, can he convince Eve to risk a secret affair with him?

Review:
Halfway Perfect by Julie Cross & Mark Perini is considered a YA novel. I have read just about everything by Julie Cross, as I enjoy her writing. I wasn’t sure I would like this YA storyline that Julie wrote with Mark Perini, but I am happy to say it was different, but very good. The background of this storyline that more or less is detailed in the above blurb, which revolves around modeling and the fashion industry.

Eve Nowakowski is our heroine, who is a student in an Ivy League school. She lands an internship with a famed photographer, which Eve hopes will land her a scholarship. While Eve is helping with the setup of a photo shoot, she also makes an impression with her own pictures.

But while working, she sees someone from her past that brings back bad memories. It seems that Eve is former teenage super model, Eve Castle, who walked away from a modeling career that would have put her at the top. No one knew why the real Eve Castle disappeared, except the false rumors that followed.

Eve, who is now 18, has no interest in returning to her career, and tries to keep her distance from her former agent & ex, who was a major reason for her running away. Alex is the young model, who is the male lead of the photo shoot. Alex is also 18, and he has to pretend that the 14 year old girl in the shoot is his girlfriend.

What follows, without giving any spoilers, is a story of the dark side of the pressure filled fashion industry, as well as abuse. Eve and Alex become very good friends, both finding themselves attracted to each other. It is Alex who will discover the truth about why Eve Castle walked away. He will have to decide whether he can afford to become romantically involved with Eve, if it will hurt his career. Eve becomes entangled into worrying about the young 14 year old girl, who seems to be walking into her steps from years before.

Eve maybe out of her league, as she has financial troubles, and her association with both Alex, Wes, her former agent and Elana, the young girl, which could create problems that  will put her deeper in debt, and possibly lose her scholarship.

Halfway Perfect is a very well written story by Julie Cross & Mark Perini. We get a nice peek into the fashion industry, modeling, the pressures, the weight issues and overall stress. There is a romance between Alex and Eve, but not too much. I thought the first 1/3 of the book was a bit slow, especially where Alex goes home to his family. But the groundwork needed to be laid out. The last 2/3 was very good. It is the story told in two Pov’s that makes you want to keep reading to see how it will all turn out.

How To Catch A Rock Star

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Amazon.uk /

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date May 15, 2015

A story of sex, love and rock ‘n’ roll

Aspiring singer Lillie and American rock star Jed seem like the perfect fit from the moment they meet. The pair are inseparable, but Jed’s jet-set schedule of shows and after-parties limits the amount they can see each other. So when Jed invites Lillie to sing with his band on their tour, she says yes. Yes with some hesitation, that is. After finding out that her ex-boyfriend was hiding away a wife and child when they were dating, Lillie’s trust in men is fragile and she also suffers from severe stage fright. As the tour progresses, Jed and Lillie are fast becoming rock’s hottest couple but with obsessive fan girls, a claustrophobic tour bus and a resentful guitarist, things start taking a turn for the worse. Lillie’s dream of singing may have finally become a reality, but can it last? The odds are stacking up against them and then the unthinkable happens…

••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: HOW TO CATCH A (ROCK) STAR is an adult, contemporary, rock star romance storyline from author Gabrielle Aquilina focusing on Jed-the lead singer and front man for the hit American rock group The Dead Hour, and aspiring British singer Lillie whose stage fright has held her back-disabling her own dance and musical career. When she discovers her boyfriend of two years is married with a child, Lillie hopes to move forward with her life but never expected to find her future with a man whose own past is secreted away.

The storyline follows Jed and Lillie’s building relationship as Lillie is pulled not only into the maelstrom that is rock and roll, but finds herself on stage as a duet performer with Jed and the band. As the weeks pass, Lillie’s popularity with the fans begins to bloom but her stage fright amplifies her self doubt as both a singer and member of the band.

The relationship between our couple is one of immediate attraction and insta-love where heart-felt confessions happen within a matter of days. Jed and Lillie are inseparable from their first night together. Lillie will quit her dead end job to follow Jed and the band on their trip throughout Europe. What ensues is a sexually erotic and sensual love match that is tempered by the small secrets Jed continues to keep to himself.

The Dead Hour is a rock and roll success but with it comes the excesses of fame, fortune and notoriety. Drugs, sex and hard drinking are an every day part of the band’s lifestyle and there are times when the morning after is not always pretty. We watch as heartbreak, lies and betrayal follow the boys but none more so than for Jed and Lillie.

The amazing, and of times humorous and colorful supporting characters include Jed’s fellow band mates-Johnny, Chris and Eddie; their manager Steve; as well as Lillie’s best friend Kate, whose attraction to Chris sets up another storyline and love match. We will be introduced to Jed’s parents Sandra and Martin, as well as Lillie’s younger sister Tess who has caught the eye of Jed’s best friend and band mate Johnny. Johnny’s personality and antics softens the copious amount of tension that follows the band from backstage to home. There are also an assortment of groupies, fans and ex lovers who pose a bit of a problem for Jed and his fellow musicians.

HOW TO CATCH A (ROCK) STAR is an imaginative and revealing storyline that takes us behind the scenes of rock and roll. The characters are flawed, imperfect and human; the storyline is seductive, compelling and dramatic. From one night stands, viral you-tube videos and paparazzi stalker style images, the boys of THE DEAD HOUR find themselves front and center in a drama of their very own. Gabrielle Aquilina pulls the reader into a storyline that will break your heart and make you swoon. We all want to be able to say that we caught our own rock star.

TRC:  Hi Gabrielle and welcome to The Reading Café.

We would like to start with some background information. Please tell us something about yourself?

FOLLOW: Website/Facebook/Twitter/Pinterest/Goodreads

Gabrielle AquilinaGabrielle:   I’m from Portsmouth but have lived in America, Hong Kong and Australia as well as Exeter and Oxford. I’ve had a lot of different office jobs and am a qualified personal trainer, but I really hope to make a living from writing! Now, I live near the sea with my four-year-old daughter and try to resist baking Nigella’s cakes every day!

TRC: Many authors develop their love of writing at an early age. What or who was the catalyst that started you on the road to publication?

Gabrielle: I’ve written on and off my whole life, but I never seriously thought about being published until I went to an event about writing groups at my (then) local indie bookstore. The Oxford Writing Group encouraged people in the audience to set up their own writing groups and a girl behind me, Liah Thorley (now published, too), asked me if I wanted to set one up with her. And so Abingdon Writers was formed! With the help of the bookstore, Mostly Books, we grew to 18 members with a waiting list and encouraged and motivated each other to chase the dream of being published authors. Several of us are now published in one way or another.

TRC: If you had a choice, which career, other than writing, would you like to attempt?

Gabrielle: Ooh, that’s a tough one! When I was a kid, I wanted to be a vet and then a marine biologist… Now, I think I would like to be a furniture restorer or own my own bookstore.

TRC: Your bio states that you teach Combat. What is Combat and what does it entail?

Gabrielle: Combat is a high energy-mixed martial arts exercise class which is great fun and a brilliant stress reliever. If you’ve ever had a bad day, hit a Combat class and get all that aggression and tension out!

How To Catch A Rock StarTRC: HOW TO CATCH A (ROCK) STAR is your first novel. Would you please tell us something about the premise?

Gabrielle: HOW TO CATCH A (ROCK) STAR tells the story of Lillie, a bored office temp and Jed, lead singer in an American rock band. Jed invites Lillie to tour with the band after hearing her sing and they rapidly fall in love. But Lillie’s past won’t let her be happy and Jed has a secret which eventually comes out, causing Lillie to do something that Jed just can’t forgive.

TRC: How many books do you have planned for the series or is the novel a stand alone story?

Gabrielle: There will be at least two more books in the series. I’m working on the second one, which picks up from where HOW TO CATCH A (ROCK) STAR finishes and is about Johnny, Jed’s best friend and the band’s bassist.

TRC: If you could virtually cast the leading roles in HOW TO CATCH A (ROCK) STAR, which models or actors would match your ideal image?

Gabrielle: I love this question! I’ve always seen Lillie as a young Liv Tyler – she’s incredibly beautiful but not in a really obvious, in your face way. For Jed, hmmm. That’s a bit harder. A cross between Ian Sommerhalder and old school Jared Leto maybe, but a bit rougher round the edges…

TRC: What challenges or difficulties (research, logistics, background) did you encounter writing this particular story?

Gabrielle: One of the biggest challenges was keeping the timeline straight. The book changed massively from the first to the second draft and kept changing until the final draft.

I also have no idea what it’s like to be in a touring, up-and-coming rock band so that took a lot of research on the Internet and reading through band blogs to try and get an accurate representation of being on the road.

TRC: Are the storyline characters based in reality or a culmination of fact and fiction?

Gabrielle: It’s all entirely fictional – I suppose there are parts of me and people I know in some of the characters, but I don’t think anyone can write a novel and not include elements of their own personalities and those of their friends in the characters they write. After all, these people come out of our heads – they have to contain a small part of us!

TRC: How do you keep the plot unpredictable without sacrificing content and believability?

Gabrielle: You need to build tension, keep the plot relatively realistic, throw in a couple of red herrings and try not to give too much away!

TRC: When writing a storyline, do the characters direct the writing or do you direct the characters?

Gabrielle: The characters definitely direct me! The loudest character in HOW TO CATCH A (ROCK) STAR was Johnny. He just wouldn’t let himself fade into the background and that’s why I’m writing a second book based on him. He’s got a lot more to say!

TRC: Do you listen to music while writing? If so, does the style of music influence the storyline direction? Characters?

Gabrielle: I can’t write in silence. I always have music on in the background and, unsurprisingly, the soundtrack for this book was Rock. I’m not sure it influenced the plotlines, but I suspect it had some impact on the characters!

TRC: The mark of a good writer is to pull the reader into the storyline so that they experience the emotions along with the characters. What do you believe a writer must do to make this happen? Where do you believe writer’s fail in this endeavor?

Gabrielle: I think you need to make your characters real to the reader and to do that, you have to give them flaws but not make them annoying. It’s a fine line! You really need to get into your characters’ heads, describe their emotions, show their reactions and the reactions of other characters to them. The reader has to care about the characters, otherwise there’s no gement. I think it’s all too easy to make your characters too likeable and that just isn’t realistic.

TRC: Writer’s Block is a very real phenomenon. How do you handle the pressures and anxiety of writer’s block?

Gabrielle: The key is not to wait for the ‘muse’ to hit you. Sometimes you have to make yourself sit down and write. The story isn’t always flowing and, if that’s the case, ask yourself ‘what if?’. What if my main character has a complete breakdown in the supermarket? What if my protagonist’s best friend betrays her in some way? This type of question often helps to jump start my writing and introduces a dilemma or conflict to the storyline, which is always good.

TRC: What is something that few, if any people, know about you?

Gabrielle: Ooh, good but difficult question! I like to eat cheddar and chocolate. Together. I suppose it’s not for everyone…

TRC: What do you believe is the biggest misconception people have about authors?

Gabrielle: That it’s an easy job! Realistically, for most authors, it’s not much money for a lot of hours and even more angst and stress. BUT, it’s an amazing feeling to be published and writing is its own reward.

TRC: Who is the first person you think about when you need someone to talk with and why?

Gabrielle: I have a really great group of friends who I can talk to about anything and everything and do! There’s not much we don’t know about each other and most of them have been in my life for more than fifteen years so that’s a lot of shared history. I love them because they’re non-judgemental, smart and funny as hell.

TRC: On what are you currently working?

Gabrielle: I’m working on Johnny’s story, which is a spin off from ‘How To Catch A (Rock) Star’, so readers will get to find out a bit more about what happens to Jed and Lillie and also discover a lot more about Johnny.

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Gabrielle: A big thank you to the Reading Cafe for interviewing me and, if you read the book, please leave a review on Amazon or Goodreads!

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date May 5, 2015

Jason’s been living (and loving) the rich playboy lifestyle for five years, but now his parents are pressuring him to get involved in the family business. The last thing he wants is another obligation, but when his best friend moves out of state and asks Jason to look after his sister, he can’t just say no.

Tessa had to grow up way too soon. After dealing with the aftermath of her parents’ deaths, then becoming a teenage mom, she knows the meaning of responsibility. Which is why, at twenty-two, she’s looking for so much more than a party boy. She’s looking for someone who can stand by her and her daughter…forever.

A relationship between them is doomed from the start, but who says they can’t have a little fun? But as Jason gets closer to Tessa—and her daughter—fun starts to turn into something else… Something Jason’s not sure he’s ready for.

REVIEW: TESSA EVER AFTER is the second installment in Brighton Walsh’s contemporary, new adult Caged in Winter romance series. This is graduate student Jason Montgomery, and Tessa Maxwell’s storyline. Jason is Cade Maxwell’s best friend; Tessa is Cade’s sister; Cade we met in book one CAGED IN WINTER. Although TESSA EVER AFTER is the second installment in the series, it can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty.

The premise follows the friends to lovers relationship between single mother (to Haley) Tessa Maxwell, and Jason Montgomery. Following Cade’s move to Chicago, Jason became Tessa’s protector and guardian which soon escalated into something more. Jason doesn’t do relationships –he is more of the one night stand variety- and Tessa rarely dates as she is responsible for her five year old daughter. When Jason spies Tessa on one of her rare date nights out, he knows it is time to claim Tessa as his own.

The relationship between Tessa and Jason is one of immediate attraction; there is plenty of sexual chemistry between our leading couple, and the push and pull of ‘do we or don’t we’. Tessa has loved Jason for as long as she can remember but Jason is her big brother’s best friend and Jason considers Tessa off limits. The more Jason insists on friendship, the more their attraction to one another grows but Tessa has watched Jason’s parade of women for years, and in this, she doesn’t want to be another statistic. Our hero Jason has fallen in love with Tessa, and with it comes the love of a five year old girl who likes playing princess and tea parties. Cade’s over protective big brother complex takes over when he threatens Jason if any harm comes to his little sister, but Tessa reassures her brother, that she is no longer the naïve little girl who needs protection. The $ex scenes are intimate and erotic-Jason likes to talk dirty in the bedroom.

The colorful cast of secondary and supporting characters include Tessa’s best friend Paige; Cade and Winter from book one; as well as their mutual friend Adam, whose own life is about to implode. We are introduced to Jason’s parents- a couple whose control over their son’s life matches Jason’s need to escape his ascribed future-there is no fun when your entire life has been mapped out by those in charge.

TESSA EVER AFTER is a delightful and intoxicating storyline. There are moments of heartbreak and misunderstanding; passion and love. Brighton Walsh has the ability to seduce the reader into a compelling and addicting storyline with a happily ever after. The premise is engaging; the characters charismatic and real. If you are a fan of the new adult genre, you will not be disappointed.

CAGED IN WINTER by Brighton Walsh

ABOUT THE BOOK: ReleaseDate November 4, 2014

Aspiring chef Cade Maxwell is immediately, viscerally attracted to Winter Jacobson. But it’s not her mouthwatering curves he’s drawn to—it’s the strange emptiness in her eyes. When Cade saves her from a drunken customer with grabby hands, he’s shocked at her response

Winter doesn’t need Cade’s help. After a lifetime of getting by on her own, she’s happy to rely on herself. She’s exactly seventy-six days away from graduating college, and if she can hold it together that long, she’ll finally be able to rise above the crappy hand she was dealt.

But now, every time she turns around, Cade is there, ready to push her, smile at her, distract her from her plans. Winter knows she can’t afford to open up—especially to a man she’s terrified to actually want.

TRC: Hi Brighton and welcome to The Reading Café!

Brighton: Hi there! Thanks for having me!

TRC: We would like to start with some background information. Would you please tell us something about yourself?

Tessa Ever AfterBrighton: Let’s see…I spent almost ten years as a professional photographer before I went full time with this author gig. I have two kids who drive me crazy and whom I love to pieces. I like to drive too fast and swear too much. And I’ve never met a piece of cake I didn’t like.

TRC: TESSA EVER AFTER is book two in your CAGED IN WINTER New Adult romance series. Would you please tell us something about the premise?

Brighton: Sure! TEA is the story of a strong-willed single mom who struggles to find her Happily Ever After and instead finds herself in lust with Mr. Wrong—a charming playboy who happens to be her brother’s best friend.

Caged in WinterTRC: Will Cade and Winter (Caged in Winter #1) make an appearance in the storyline?

Brighton: Yes! Both Cade and Winter play a part in Tessa’s book, though Cade definitely plays more of a role. Readers will get to see him in all his older brother protectiveness.

TRC: What challenges or difficulties (research, logistics, background) did you encounter writing this particular story? the series?

Brighton: For TEA, the biggest challenge was making Jason’s character work for the book after I’d already boxed him in a bit in CiW. I had to twist things a little regarding his family business, but it all worked in the end. The hardest thing in the series would be just that: that it’s a series and not being able to go back and edit earlier books to make things work when you get further along is the hardest.

TRC: How do you keep the plot unpredictable without sacrificing content and believability?

Brighton: I think this is totally a unique reader experience, because what one reader believes is predictable, the other views as surprising. I don’t set out to make things unpredictable when I’m writing, but I do set out to make a unique story for my characters, and I let them lead.

TRC: Thank you Brighton for taking the time to answer our questions.

Brighton: Thanks so much for having me!
