REVIEW: DODGING TEMPTATION is the first installment in Avery Flynn’s contemporary adult RETREAT romance series focusing on the Loving brothers-Dodge, Stone and Griff Loving, and the family owned Retreat Spa and Resort where A-listers, the famous, and infamous venture for privacy, luxury and freedom. This is eldest brother and resort CEO Dodge Loving, and newly divorced Harper Conner’s storyline.

Told from dual third person perspectives DODGING TEMPTATION follows the building relationship between Harper and Dodge, and Dodge’s plans to sign a deal for The Retreat to go global in the hopes of taking down the man who he believes destroyed his mother’s life. What ensues is an acrimonious introduction between our leading couple when Dodge discovers her connections to the man he is hoping to bring down.

Harper Conner’s newly minted status as a young divorcee finds our heroine struggling for a direction in life, and with it comes the tenacity and ball busting attitude when Dodge Loving makes it his mission to remove Harper from The Retreat Spa and Resort. Harper is an employee of his mother, and his mother’s attempts at matchmaking place Harper and Dodge in the direct line of fire. But Dodge wants nothing to do with the ex-wife of a scandalous senator-she brings too much trouble and notoriety to the quiet solitude of The Retreat Spa and Resort. The paparazzi have staked a spot outside The Retreat in the hopes of a getting an exclusive with some of the famous visitors.

The relationship between our couple is fraught with accusations and perceived betrayal. Dodge and Harper believe that each other has an agenda, and with it comes the disheartening realization that everything about their growing connection has been a lie. The $ex scenes are intimate and seductive without the over the top graphic erotic imagery. There is some definite heat in the kitchen, and the library.

The secondary and supporting characters include Dodge’s brothers Stone and Griff, as well as their long suffering mother who has made it her mission to see that each of her sons finds his happily ever after. But it is May Loving’s past relationship with her own family that fuels the animosity and hatred building up in her eldest son. He is a man determined to destroy the past but with it will come hardship and heartbreak. The ultimate in rock star rehab notoriety comes in the form Garth Hampton-a man whose own demons have become fodder for the paparazzi tabloids.

DODGING TEMPTATION is an entertaining and sexy story that tests the waters of racial discrimination in the face of family history and letting go of the past. The premise is evenly paced while the build-up of conflict between Harper and Dodge is a foregone conclusion. The characters are engaging, energetic and oft-times a point of humor especially where it concerns the relationship between Dodge, Stone and Griff-brotherly love is all about the teasing and loving revenge. The conflict resolution is rather abrupt, in my humble opinion, with a look to the future one month later. May Loving is once again on the search for the women to tame her younger sons. Congratulations to Avery Flynn on the release of DODGING TEMPTATION-the first book in her new RETREAT romance series.

Or will betting on the truth this time lead to ever-lasting love?

REVIEW:

Poor Tasha (Natasha) hasn’t had the best start in life. She suffers from a form of dyslexia, this has had a huge impact in her life. Her life seems to be on a downward spiral, and on a whim inspired by her a dream about her mum, Tasha blows her life savings on a spin of the roulette wheel……

We catch up as she stands outside a homeless shelter, her luck surely can’t get any worse, but unbeknownst to her it’s about to get worse; someone from her past is stalking her and wants something special from her.

Adrian is a fiery and passionate Italian man, but he has difficulty in accepting his parents fortune, so he tends to overcompensate, and his heart often rules his head.

And all he wants is a woman who wants him, not his bank account so after meeting Tasha at a charity ball, he is totally hooked. So with a plan in mind he slowly reels his woman in.

But life and love doesn’t always go to plan. Natasha hides her past and her shame from Adrian, and he in turn tries to woo the woman he intends to marry in a way that makes for lots of misunderstandings.

Will Adrian’s language barrier and Natasha’s fear of men and her past, get in the way, or will they get their happy ending.

The characters were very well written and the descriptive way the author set the scenes were breathtaking. I could see myself in most of the scenes, my favourite part was the garden in which Tasha was working in.

This wasn’t my favourite story from the series, but it was great catching up with previous characters.

He couldn’t know how much she would like to do exactly that.
Yet Natasha’s fears of giving over to the sensations jolting through her at his touch were stronger than her impulse to let go and enjoy the evening, the moment and the man. Her lucky night, he’d said. She didn’t want to think about luck. She’d had the dream again the previous night—always the same sequence of events, always the same words. It wasn’t right. Surely her mother wouldn’t mock her from the grave.
But the man’s firm leading caught her up, and soon she was twirling and dipping and dancing and laughing.
Until the music ended.
And Natasha snapped back into the room.
She stepped away from his hold. A rush of coolness swept between them as if someone had opened a door or a window, but there was neither in sight. He dipped his head toward hers and she panicked, thinking he was going to kiss her.
“One more?” he asked, smiling. “And then we should get something to drink.”
Relieved that all he wanted was a dance, she nodded.
But then the DJ cued a slow song, a song she’d never heard before. As his hand slipped to her back and down to her waist and he drew her close, her heart rumbled a beat far faster than the slow tempo of the lovely ballad.
He ran his other hand along her arm until his fingertips met hers. He twined his fingers in hers, then lifted their joined hands and rested them against his chest. Through the edge of her palm, she felt his heart beating, keeping time with hers, keeping a tempo that had nothing to do with the DJ or the party or the place. She tilted her head back and caught him smiling down at her as he swayed and drew her into the first slow steps of the dance. The music played not only around her but through her, melding with the beat of his heart against her palm and the feel of his other hand at her back, guiding her, meeting her, caressing her.
And she let go. Surrendered to the pulse of energy flowing in her. And danced with the mysterious man with the beguiling smile.
When the music stopped, she felt like a woman waking from a delicious dream. But within seconds her thoughts rushed in, calling her defenses back into place like sentinels that had waited at the ready, unhappy to have been dismissed for even the briefest of moments.
“Let’s get some air,” he said. “There’s a terrace just outside the back of this tent.”
Air. Yes, air would help her return to her senses.
He took two glasses of champagne from a passing waiter and handed one to her.
The night had turned cool, the perfect drop in temperature that would lead to this season’s best grapes. The fog hadn’t yet come in, but there was a distinct chill in the evening air.
He whisked off the black doublet he wore and wrapped it around her shoulders.
“Thank you,” she said, finding her voice.
Several couples were seated near heaters at small tables lit by candlelight. Their mingled voices and laughter rippled into Natasha. Had she ever really had fun? She couldn’t remember.
“The stars are especially bright tonight. No moon,” he said.
She looked up, but he wasn’t looking at the stars. He was looking at her.
“Tell me something about you,” he said softly.
“We’re not supposed to exchange information,” she answered.
“Only identifying information is off limits. Tell me about something you love.”
Under normal circumstances she would’ve said Tyler. She sorted through possible responses and found she wanted to answer. Wanted to share some part of her with this mysterious man. But not without a reciprocal exchange.
“If I do, then after, you tell me something. One thing that you love.”
“With pleasure.”
His accent perhaps explained his rather formal English. She liked the way he spoke, the way his words wound together in unusual patterns and his accent made the words stand out, familiar yet not familiar. For so many years she’d honed her ability to listen, to see, to use her senses to make up for her struggles with written words. She was reaping the reward for honing those senses tonight. With this man in this magical setting.
She hugged her elbows close to her chest. “I love plants, everything about them. Their beauty. Tenacity. Fragility. They speak my language.”
He raised a brow, barely visible above his black mask. “Then we have more in common than loving to dance.”
“I didn’t say I loved to dance,” she said, glad that it was dark and he couldn’t see the heat creep into her cheeks.
“You didn’t have to.”
If she’d known how intimate dancing with him would feel, would she have agreed to dance? Already she felt that she’d stepped into a world with signs and signals she couldn’t read. With sensations that tumbled her thoughts and teased at her carefully held boundaries. But perhaps she was like a prisoner kept too long in a dark cell. She longed for color. For song and dance and laughter. To surrender, if only for a moment.
If only there wouldn’t be consequences.
But there were. There always would be.

Description:
Eve Dallas tracks a couple whose passion is fueled by cold brutality in the newest crime thriller from the #1 New York Times–bestselling author of Obsession in Death and Festive in Death.

When Lieutenant Eve Dallas examines a body in a downtown Manhattan alleyway, the victim’s injuries are so extensive that she almost misses the clue. Carved into the skin is the shape of a heart—and initials inside reading E and D . . .

Ella-Loo and her boyfriend, Darryl, had been separated while Darryl was a guest of the state of Oklahoma, and now that his sentence has been served they don’t ever intend to part again. Ella-Loo’s got dreams. And Darryl believes there are better ways to achieve your dreams than working for them. So they hit the road, and when their car breaks down in Arkansas, they make plans to take someone else’s. Then things get messy and they wind up killing someone—an experience that stokes a fierce, wild desire in Ella-Loo. A desire for Darryl. And a desire to kill again.

As they cross state lines on their way to New York to find the life they think they deserve, they will leave a trail of evil behind them. But now they’ve landed in the jurisdiction of Lieutenant Dallas and her team at the New York Police and Security Department. And with her husband, Roarke, at her side, she has every intention of hunting them down and giving them what they truly deserve . . .

Review:

Devoted in Death by J.D. Robb is the 41st book in her fabulous In Death Series. I have so much respect for J.D. Robb (aka Nora Roberts), that she can write 2 full length and one novella a year, and keep us totally waiting with abated breath for her next book. I have said this before, the best part of this series, are the characters we get to spend time with in each and every book. There is no better couple then Eve and Roarke, and the wonderful friends and team they have added on over the years. Some of the best, including Peabody, Summerset, McNab, Mira, Baxter, Truheart, Galahad, etc.

For those of you who have unfortunately not read this series, it takes place in the future, but still very much like modern times; though I am a big fan of the auto chef, and some of the other great gadgets. Since Eve Dallas is our heroine throughout the series, and she is a tough bad ass cop, this series is all about murder, violence, terrible villains, mystery and top notch exciting police work to find the killer before they kill any more victims. But most of all, In Death series is Eve and Roarke at their best working together in solving the crime, as well as in love. I can never get enough of them.

In Devoted in Death, we have two young wild and crazy killers, who use their horrific crimes to feed their sexual lust for each other. What started out accidently in the south, becomes a cross country trail of victims that leads to New York, and Eve Dallas. Eve, Peabody and her team work through nights trying to find clues, to find these deranged vicious killers and save the latest victim.

Ella-Loo and Darryl are the killers, who profess their undying love for each other, as they torture their victims, leading to wild sexual exploits. They think they are unstoppable, but they haven’t come across someone like Eve Dallas. I will not give spoilers, only to say this was a very exciting, nail biting adventure, not to mention angst at the killers who have no redeeming qualities.

Once again, J.D. Robb gives us another heart stopping thriller. In between all the dark, there is always the light that keeps us going. The love between Eve and Roarke, and Robb does escalate this even more in this book; the fun we laugh at when Eve is with Peabody, and the camaraderie she has with her great team. I love this series, it is one of my go to reads, as I will never miss a book in this series, and I pray this will never end. If you have not read this series, you are missing a wonderful series, best couple, and fantastic characters.

ABOUT THE BOOK: release date September 22, 2015

When a mysterious text message summons May Wexler to a biker bar in downtown New Orleans, she knows something is very wrong. Her sister has sent out an SOS, but when May gets there, she’s nowhere to be found and May is the one in trouble—she’s wearing pink espadrilles, she’s got a Chihuahua in her purse, and she’s in the middle of a shootout.

After tall, muscular Ozzie comes to her rescue, May has no choice but to follow him to safety. At the headquarters of his private security firm, the Bourbon Street Boys, she finds a refuge for the night—and the offer of a job. But it’s not long before a gun-toting stalker isn’t the only complication in May’s life: the more time she spends with Ozzie, the less she can deny that they’ve got some serious chemistry. A wrong number got her into this mess…Will it also get her the right guy?

••••••••••••

REVIEW: WRONG NUMBER, RIGHT GUY is the first installment in Elle Casey’s contemporary adult THE BOURBON STREET BOYS romantic suspense series focusing on the Bourbon Street Boys (BSB) private security firm. This is owner Ozzie, and professional photographer May Wexler’s storyline.

Told from first person point of view (May) WRONG NUMBER, RIGHT GUY focuses on a case of mistaken identity-or-accidental text messaging wherein May receives texts from a number she believes belongs to her sister. When the messages become more incessant, rude, and demanding our heroine show up at a local biker bar, May is all about keeping her sister happy. What May doesn’t know is that the phone text is from a man deep undercover whose messages are being sent to May’s phone. When May shows up at the bar, gunfire and a car pursuit find May in the protective custody of the Bourbon Street Boys, who will soon offer May a position within their group.

The relationship between May and Ozzie is one of immediate attraction as May finds herself drawn to the man in charge. Following a number of threats against May’s life, Ozzie has May move into the BSB headquarters wherein a sexual relationship between our leading couple ensues. Ozzie is the epitome of tall, dark and dangerous to May’s ‘Bo-Peep’ in pink outward façade. The $ex scenes are limited, provocative and intense.

There is a large cast of secondary and supporting characters including all of Ozzie’s Bourbon Street Boys security personnel. We are introduced to Toni-the only other female specialist-and a woman with secrets of her own. May’s sister Jennifer plays a small recurring role; a support system for her sister, and quite possibly a potential new member of the BSB team.

The world building focuses on the men and women of the Bourbon Street Boys. We are witness to their individual pursuits and job descriptions as well as their current series of investigations and special operations. There is a building storyline at the local Marina where income and expenses don’t meet up.

Elle Casey adds some humor and asides throughout the story as we listen to May’s internal dialogue, banter and jokes pertaining to her current situation. Some of the humor was palatable but there were several instances where the flippancy and blatant attempts at comedy fell flat reminding of a young boy vying for attention with jokes and one-liners. I also had a few issues with the lack of character description and development as it pertained to our leading couple, and the lack of heat in the romance department. I think May’s characters lacked some maturity as it pertained to relationships making for some uncomfortable scenarios and relationship talk.

WRONG NUMBER, RIGHT GUY is an easy read; an entertaining storyline where two people from different walks of life find happiness and love all because of a wrong number and a few misdirected texts. Aside from some few bumps with the writing style WRONG NUMBER, RIGHT GUY is a welcome introduction to Elle Casey’s THE BOUBON STREET BOYS romantic suspense series. I am looking forward to what’s in store for the BSB security team.

•••••••••••••

NOTE: If you have not read the previous installments my review may contain some spoilers.

REVIEW: FALLING FOR DANGER is the third installment in Chanel Cleeton’s contemporary, new adult Capital Confessions political romantic suspense series focusing on the three daughters of Senator Edward Reynolds and the scandals that threaten to destroy their lives. This is youngest daughter Kate Reynolds-a new CIA recruit-and former US solider Matt Ryan’s storyline.

Told from alternating first person points of view (Matt and Kate) FALLING FOR DANGER is the culmination of three storylines wherein Senator Edward Reynolds’s life in the public eye is about to take center stage for all of the wrong reasons. Over three years has past since the ambush in Afghanistan that killed Kate’s fiance Matt Ryan and his team of soldiers but Kate has suspected that the entire story is somewhere between the truth and a cover-up of epic proportions. As Kate begins to amass a series of documents, from an unknown source, regarding the ambush in the Middle East her world will begin to spiral out of control when a ghost from the past walks back into her life bringing with him death, destruction and chaos to her less than orderly life.

FALLING FOR DANGER is a story about second chances for two people whose life together barely had a chance to begin. Kate has mourned Matt’s death for close to four years, and in the ensuing time Kate has never once faltered in her belief of a cover-up and her father’s involvement in the death of the man she has always loved.

All of the previous storyline couples play a secondary and supporting role as the sisters prepare for Jackie and Will’s upcoming nuptials. But the wedding is secondary to the storyline as Kate becomes the target of several attempts on her life, as well as a break in, stabbing, explosion and the death of an innocent man who got caught in the embroiled family battles.

FALLING FOR DANGER focuses on the darker side of political power as Senator Edward Reynolds continues his spiral into depravity and loss of control. Secrets from the past slowing bleed through the cracks of the walls the Senator has built to protect his political empire but sometimes the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree when revenge and a second chance at love are the focus of a daughter whose father has destroyed everyone she has ever loved.

The suspense filled premise storyline is impressive as the reader is pulled into the action and fast paced drama that surrounds Kate and the man that she loves. There is some repetition and redundancy that I can forgive as it continued to emphasize the distraught nature of the situation. There are moments of intense life and death situations followed by the need to reaffirm one’s survival; the emotional fall out of the truth is traumatic and staggering although the growing conflict was easily deduced throughout the developing series.

FALLING FOR DANGER does not end on a happily ever after-but a happily ever after for now. There were too many loose ends that were left unaddressed and I didn’t feel the provocateur of evil met his due. Perhaps it is the nature of the political beast, but sometimes there is a need to see retribution meted out in all of its glory. The suspense-filled build up reached a less than satisfying conclusion but when all is said and done, perhaps there will be a novella that reveals the entirety of the havoc one man has brought to his family and the people of Washington DC-revenge is a dish best served before the public eye.

•••••••••••

REVIEW: FLIRTING WITH SCANDAL is the first installment in Chanel Cleeton’s contemporary, new adult Capital Confessions political romantic suspense series focusing on the American political elite, and the three daughters of Senator Edward Reynolds. This is Virginia State Senate hopeful, twenty six year old William Clayton (Will), and twenty one year old university senior and political consultant intern Jackie Gardner’s storyline.

Told from alternating first person points of view (Jackie and Will) FLIRTING WITH SCANDAL follows the election campaign of William Clayton. William comes from a successful political family, and with it he has earned the respect of the American people. But a scandal is brewing when William falls for one of his campaign consultants, and a sex video emerges thanks to the DC blog known as Capital Confessions. Capital Confessions is in the business of digging up dirt on the political and power elite of Washington DC, and Wil and Jackie’s misadventures are ripe for the picking. Sex, politics and a scandal do not make for successful bedfellows. Each chapter begins with an excerpt from the Capital Confessions blog.

Jackie Gardner is a strong heroine whose past is riddled with scandal, betrayal and personal humiliation. As the illegitimate daughter of a Washington DC Senator, Jackie has never known the benefits of her father’s power and political connections. From an absent mother whose reputation throughout DC is that of a political groupie, Jackie fears her presence in William’s life will affect his election campaign and any possible future between her and Wil.

Wil is the personification of the perfect boyfriend, the perfect political candidate, and the perfect son. His family is deeply rooted in the political atmosphere of DC, and with it comes the clean cut image of a boy wonder-there are no skeletons in William Clayton’s background and he is willing to risk everything for the woman that he loves.

The relationship between Wil and Jackie begins through an accidental meeting at a local DC bar where backroom deals and affairs begin. Their attraction to one another is immediate; the sexual tension is palpable; there is no denying the chemistry and pull, but Jackie will soon discover that Wil’s political connections hit too close to home. While Will and Jackie keep secret their private affair, someone behind the scenes is releasing personal information about the goings on at Wil’s campaign headquarters. The $ex scenes are intimate, passionate and hot without the over-the-top graphic, erotic imagery; there is some definite steamy $ex going on.

FLIRTING WITH SCANDAL has a large cast of colorful and energetic secondary and supporting characters including the introduction of Jackie’s half sisters Blair and Kate Reynolds whose own stories will be revealed in books 2 & 3. We are also witness to the aggressive tactics of Jackie’s cold-hearted biological father; and a mother who is less than worthy of the title of mother-of-the-year.

The world building focuses on Jackie and Wil’s building relationship as well as the political blog Capitol Confessions. The blog has a reputation of getting the dirt on the power elite of the American political system, and with it comes hints and clues as to the goings on behind the scenes and in the bedrooms of DC’s law makers and wanna-bes.

FLIRTING WITH SCANDAL is a solid and easy read; a well written and evenly paced storyline; a fascinating look at the dirty side of politics, and the scandals that could make or break a run for political office. The premise is entertaining and will captivate your imagination; the characters are engaging, animated, ruthless and charismatic; the happily ever after hopeful and inspiring. This is my first Chanel Cleeton read, but it won’t be my last.

The daughter of one of the Senate’s most powerful figures, Blair Reynolds was ready to become the ultimate political wife—until she caught her fiancé cheating on her wedding day. Law school is a fresh start, her shot at putting the pieces of her life back together. That’s the plan, at least. Until trouble comes in the form of her Torts professor, the man whose arrogance infuriates her in class but haunts her private fantasies.

Graydon Canter had a fortune and a place on all the hottest “Thirty under Thirty” lists, until a series of personal missteps nearly destroyed his career. A year teaching at a D.C. law school is just the break he needs to get his life back in order, as long as nothing—and no one—trips him up.

When Blair and Gray are forced to work together, their explosive attraction becomes impossible to resist. But Gray’s demons have drawn him dangerously close to the edge, and Blair has spent her life playing by the rules. Will she break them for a shot at love?

••••••••••••

REVIEW: PLAYING WITH TROUBLE is the second installment in Chanel Cleeton’s contemporary, new adult Capital Confessions political romantic suspense series. This is thirty-year old law professor Graydon (Gray) Canter, and twenty-three year old law student Blair Reynolds’s storyline. Blair is the eldest daughter of Senator Edward Reynolds, and a woman whose personal life has been the subject of gossip and headlines news. PLAYING WITH TROUBLE commences a few months after the events of book one FLIRTING WITH SCANDAL but can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty; any important information from the previous storyline is revealed when necessary but I recommend reading the series in order for backstory and enjoyment.

Told from alternating first person points of view (Gray and Blair) PLAYING WITH TROUBLE focuses on the forbidden relationship between Professor Gray Canter, and first year law student Blair Reynolds. Gray’s attraction to Blair is immediate but his reaction to the young woman is awkward, stilted and sometimes aggressive. Blair is fighting her own demons following the discovery, on her wedding day that her fiancé was cheating on her with his best man. But Gray’s attitude toward Blair finds our heroine targeted and singled out during class for reasons that will all too soon become apparent.

The attraction between Blair and Gray is immediate but forbidden. Gray is Blair’s professor, and any sign of impropriety will be grounds for dismissal. A new start in a new town finds Gray travelling down a familiar path towards personal destruction and regret-a path that previously spiraled out of control. The $ex scenes are provocative, sensual and slightly more erotic than the previous storyline but there was no rush to consummate their relationship. The sexual chemistry and tension is off the charts; the flirting is a constant reminder of things to come as we are inside the head of our two leading characters for a good portion of the story.

The secondary and supporting characters include Blair’s sister Kate-a woman whose past is mired in betrayal, loss and grief. Jackie Gardner, Blair and Kate’s half sister, along with her fiancé William Clayton (Flirting With Scandal #1) make a couple of cameo appearances as the sisters continue to struggle with the missing years of growing up without the knowledge of one another’s existence. We are also introduced to Blair’s fellow classmates-Adam and Caitlin-Adam’s attraction to Blair is but a blip on the radar but a source of conflict between Blair and Gray-none-the -less.

PLAYING WITH TROUBLE is a fascinating and revealing storyline that continues to focus on the scandals haunting Senator Reynolds, his family and his political career. The series does not center on the politics but on one man’s corruptive lifestyle and hidden past. Once again, each chapter is highlighted with a blog excerpt from Capital Confessions- an online blog site that reveals the good, the bad, and the ugly of America’s capital and the political machine in Washington DC. The premise is well structured and evenly paced-there is a bit of a rush to the conflict resolution between Gray and Blair.

Chanel Cleeton’s CAPITAL CONFESSIONS series has all the angst of a new adult storyline: dark history; past demons; regret, betrayal and loss. PLAYING WITH TROUBLE reveals a little more about the Reynolds’s family dynamics; Senator Reynolds’s continuous fall from grace; and the American public’s willingness to forgive and forget. Today’s headlines news is tomorrow’s bird-cage liner.

REVIEW: DIRTY TALK is the second installment in Megan Erickson’s contemporary, adult MECHANICS OF LOVE erotic romance series focusing on the Payton Brothers from Payton and Sons Automotive-a spin off from Megan’s ‘Bowler University’ series where Max Payton (the youngest Payton brother) was the male lead in book two-MAKE IT RIGHT. This is second eldest brother Brent Payton, and single mother Ivy Dawn’s storyline. Ivy is the sister of Alex –a female mechanic who works for Payton and Sons.

Told from third person point of view DIRTY TALK focuses on Brent Payton as he tries to seduce Ivy Dawn. Ivy is a single mother, who between she and her sister Alex, have made a pact to give up men in the hopes of a safe and secure future. Ivy and Alex’s pasts are tainted with emotional abuse and betrayal, and with it comes the need to first and foremost protect themselves and Ivy’s six year old daughter Violet. Ivy’s constant rejections of Brent’s attempts for a date find our heroine at odds with Brent Payton when our hero rescues Ivy’s daughter from a near drowning accident after a school bus roll over. What ensues is a series of dates where Ivy will begin to fall in love against her sister’s wishes.

The relationship and attraction between Ivy and Brent is immediate but Ivy must keep secret her past. Alex’s past has placed Ivy and Violet in a precarious position, and with it will comes the need to run when Alex’s past begins a search for the woman he got away. Ivy and Brent’s relationship is slow to build but when Brent discovers that Ivy and Alex are on the run, he believes he has lost everything along with his heart. Brent is the family ‘bad boy’; the ‘black sheep’ and believes he must work harder to prove he is worthy of everyone’s love. The $ex scenes are erotic and hot.

The secondary and supporting characters include Ivy’s sister Alex whose past history plays a pivotal role Ivy and Violet’s need to run. We also reconnect with Delilah –own of Delilah’s Drawers and Ivy’s new boss: as well as Cal Payton and Jenna MacMillan (Dirty Thoughts #1), and the Payton family patriarch Jack who is beginning to realize that his family is moving forward without him. Cal and Brent’s half –brother Asher makes several appearances-I am looking forward to Asher’s story but for now the young man is still a high school student with problems of prom, first love, and graduation on the horizon. We are also introduced to Davis- a former fire fighter who lost the use of his legs in a tragic fire fighting accident. I am not sure if Megan has plans for a romantic story involving Davis but we can only hope considering Davis feels like his romantic options have come to an end.

DIRTY TALK is a quick, sexy and easy read: the potential for conflict never came to fruition but resolution about Alex and Ivy’s past has not been addressed-perhaps Alex’s storyline will see the conflict come to a head. There are moments of heartbreak when Ivy must leave in order to protect her daughter, and Brent’s resolve to let Ivy go without a fight. Saying that, there is one particular scenario where Brent falls back into his old ways that didn’t sit well for this reader under the circumstances when his friends and some family members pushed our hero into looking elsewhere to ease his pain. The premise is engaging and fun; the characters are energetic and charismatic. DIRTY TALK is a great addition to Megan Erickson’s MECHANICS OF LOVE series.

Excerpt Black and Hot Pink

Brent Payton wanted some decent music while he was working.
Not this pop-rock crap the radio had been playing but real rock ’n’ roll. Hell, he’d take George Thurgood right about now. Some “Bad to the Bone”? Hells to the yeah. That was better than a cup of coffee, which he could really use this Monday morning.
He’d volunteered to spring for an iPod and a docking station so he could play his own music, but his technology-inept father had acted like Brent wanted to buy a spaceship.
So that was out.
“Brent,” Cal’s voice called from the other bay of their garage at Payton Automotive.
“Yeah?”
“What’s this shit on the radio?” his older brother asked. “Turn it down before my ears bleed.”
Brent snorted. Cal was grumpy on a normal basis. But now that he’d quit smoking and wore a nicotine patch, he was even more insufferable. So Brent didn’t argue and turned down the music.
A truck rumbled into the parking lot, and Brent turned around, squinting to see who it was.
Alex Dawn, the new employee they’d hired a week ago, strolled into the garage, a bandana wrapped around her head, wearing baggy jeans and a tight T-shirt. She held a banana in one hand.
Brent grinned and walked over to where she stood outside the door to the office, looking over the schedule for the day. She peeled her banana and took a bite. He leaned in and inhaled deeply. “I love the smell of estrogen in the morning.”
Her lips twitched only slightly before she turned around and socked him in the bicep, hard. The woman could hit.
He howled dramatically and clutched his arm, swinging it limply from the elbow. “I’m injured! I can’t work!”
While Alex gazed at him, one eyebrow raised in amusement, he forgot about his injury, grabbed her banana, and bit off half of it.
“You asshole! That’s my breakfast!” Alex smacked him in the stomach, and he started laughing, nearly choking on the banana. “I’m so stealing the Snickers you keep hidden in the office.”
He straightened in shock. “You wouldn’t.”
She was smug, the witch. “I would.”
“That’s war, woman.”
She took the rest of the banana out of the peel and then tossed it so it landed on his shoulder. “Then don’t mess with my banana.”
“That’s some grade-D dirty talk,” he said, picking the peel off of his shoulder and throwing it in the trash can.
“Will you two quit it and get to work?” his dad, Jack, hollered, sticking his head out of the office door. “It’s like you’re related.”
Brent shrugged and walked over to the minivan to continue rotating its tires. Alex smirked at him from her bay. Brent winked back.
Working with Alex had been rocky at first. She had a chip on her shoulder—which she refused talk about—and Brent really enjoyed trying to knock it off, which only led to their sniping at each other. But when some asshole customer gave her a hard time because she was a woman, and she told him to shove it—Payton and Sons Automotive didn’t really have that customer-is-always-right policy—Brent developed a newfound respect for her. When Brent backed her up in front of said asshole, she began giving him some respect in return. And so they’d fallen into this brother-sister type relationship that was actually kinda fun. Brent didn’t really have friendships with women and especially not women he’d never fucked.
And the thing about Alex was . . . he didn’t want to fuck her. It wasn’t because she wasn’t hot, because she was. But the chemistry between them was . . . lacking. Which surprised Brent. Because he was like hydrogen; he reacted with everyone.
Brent worked quietly for the rest of the morning, singing to himself when decent music came on, taking care of the minivan before moving on to the next job.
He was draining oil from an old Toyota when he heard voices from the front of the garage. He spotted Dick Carmichael talking to Alex. She pointed toward the back room, where Cal had disappeared. The Carmichaels had been coming to the shop since before Brent had started working there. Dick was a retired accountant, and his wife still cut hair in an add-on at their house.
“Can I help you, Dick?” Brent asked as he walked closer.
The man turned to him. “Hey, Brent. Uh, no, that’s fine. I’ll just wait for Cal.”
“Oh, well if you need—”
Dick waved him on. “It’s fine. You can get back to work. I’m sure you want to break for lunch soon.” He patted him on the shoulder, like he was a kid, and chuckled. “Your dad always says that’s your favorite part of the day.”
Brent tamped down the irritation. First, whatever Cal could help him with, Brent could too. Second, yeah, Brent liked eating a hell of a lot, but that didn’t mean he didn’t do his job.
So he nodded and walked back to the Toyota. He didn’t look up when he heard Cal return, when Dick spoke with Cal about some work he wanted to do to his car—work that Brent would probably be assigned to, but he wasn’t Cal, the responsible one.
Nor was he Max, their younger brother, the first of them all to become a college graduate.
Brent was the middle brother, the joker, the comic relief. The irresponsible one.
Never mind that he’d been working at this shop since he was sixteen. Never mind that he could do every job, inside and out, and fast as fuck.
Never mind that he could be counted on, even though no one treated him like that.
A pain registered in his wrist, and he glanced down at the veins and tendons straining against the skin in his arm, where he had a death grip on a wrench.
He loosened his fist and dropped the tool on the bench.
This wallowing shit had to stop.
This was his life. He was happy (mostly) and free (no ball and chain, no way), and so what if everyone thought he was a joke? He was good at that role, so the typecasting fit.
“Why so glum, sugar plum?” Alex said from beside him as she peered up into his face.
He twisted his lips into a smirk and propped a hip on the counter, crossing his arms over his chest. “I knew you had a crush on me, sweet cheeks.”
She narrowed her eyes, lips pursed to hide a smile. “Not even in your dreams.”
He sighed dramatically. “You’re just like all the ladies. Wanna piece of Brent. There’s enough to go around, Alex; no need to butter me up with sweet nicknames—”
A throat cleared. And Brent looked over to see a woman standing beside them, one hand on her hip, the other dangling at her side, holding a paper bag. Her dark eyebrows were raised, full red lips pursed.
And Brent blinked, hoping this wasn’t a mirage.
Tory, Maryland, wasn’t big, and he’d made it his mission to know every available female in the town limits and about a ten-mile radius outside of that.
This woman? He’d never seen her. He’d surely remember if he had.
Gorgeous. Long hair so dark brown it was almost black. Perfect face. It was September and still warm, so she wore a tight striped sundress that ended mid-thigh. She was tiny, probably over a foot smaller than he was. Fuck, the things that little body made him dream about. He wondered if she did yoga. Tiny and limber was his kryptonite.
Narrow waist, round hips, big tits.
No ring.
Bingo.
He smiled. Sure, she was probably a customer, but this wouldn’t be the first time he’d managed to use the garage to his advantage. Usually, he just had to toss around a tire or two, rev an engine, whatever, and they were more than eager to hand over a phone number and address. No one thought he was a consummate professional anyway, so why bother trying to be one?
He leaned his ass against the counter, crossing his arms over his chest. “Can I help you?”
She blinked, long lashes fluttering over her big blue eyes. “Can you help me?”
“Yeah, we’re full service here.” He resisted winking. That was kinda sleazy.
Her eyes widened for a fraction of a second before they shifted to Alex at his side and then back to him. Her eyes darkened for a minute, her tongue peeked out between those red lips, and then she straightened. “No, you can’t help me.”
He leaned forward. “Really? You sure?”
“Positive.”
“Like, how positive?
“I’m one hundred percent positive that I do not need help from you, Brent Payton.”
That made him pause. She knew his name. He knew he’d never met her, so that could only mean she’d heard about him somehow, and by the look on her face, it was nothing good.
Well, shit.
He opened his mouth, not sure what to say but hoping it would come to him, when Alex began cracking up next to him, slapping her thighs and snorting.
Brent glared at her. “And what’s your problem?”
Alex stepped forward, threw her arm around the shoulder of the woman in front of them, and smiled ear to ear. “Brent, meet my sister, Ivy. Ivy, thanks for making me proud.”
They were both smiling now, that same full-lipped, white-teethed smile. He surveyed Alex’s face and then Ivy’s, and holy fuck—how did he not notice this right away? They almost looked like twins.
And the sisters were looking at him now, wearing matching smug grins—and wasn’t that a total cock-block? He pointed at Alex. “What did you tell her about me?”
“That the day I interviewed, you asked me to re-create a Whitesnake music video on the hood of a car.”
He threw up his hands. “Can you let that go? You weren’t even my first choice. I wanted Cal’s girlfriend to do it.”
“Because that’s more appropriate,” Alex said drily.
“Excuse me for trying to liven it up around here.”
Ivy turned to her sister, so he got a better glimpse of those thighs he might sell his soul to touch. She held up the paper bag. “I brought lunch; hope that’s okay.”
“Of course it is,” Alex said. “Thanks a lot, since someone stole my breakfast.” She narrowed her eyes at Brent. Ivy turned to him slowly in disbelief, like she couldn’t believe he was that evil.
Brent had made a lot of bad first impressions in his life. A dad of one of his high school girlfriend’s had seen Brent’s bare ass, while Brent was lying on top of his daughter, before the dad ever saw Brent’s face. That had not gone over well. And yet this impression might be even worse.
Because he didn’t care about what that girl’s dad thought of him. Not really.
And he didn’t want to care about what Ivy thought of him, but, dammit, he did. It bothered the hell out of him that she’d written him off before even meeting him. Did Alex tell her any of his good qualities? Like . . . Brent wracked his brain for good qualities.
By the time he thought of one, the girls had already disappeared to the back room for lunch.
“Do you think we hurt his feelings?” Ivy picked at a stray piece of lettuce hanging out of her sandwich.
She didn’t meet her sister’s eyes, not even when Alex started making choking sounds across from her at the small table in the back of Payton and Sons Automotive.
“E-excuse me?” Alex stuttered.
Ivy bit her lip and lifted her gaze to her sister’s. Alex had talked a lot about Brent, and while there was an underlying platonic affection to her words, most of her talk was complaining about how much of a pain in her ass he was. Maybe Alex hadn’t been looking at Brent close enough during their conversation out in the garage, but Ivy had been. She’d noticed the flash of frustration over his face when they’d shut him down.
What made her pause was that it seemed like frustration directed at himself, not at her.
Crap. Ivy dipped her gaze back to her sandwich. This would not do. She and Alex had basically stamped a big red X over all dicks—literal and figurative—for a good long time. They’d already moved twice to get away from men who had ruined their lives. Tory was supposed to be where they settled in, got their lives straight, and raised Violet.
Ivy’s defense mechanism was to immediately be cold to Brent. She could have gotten bees with honey, but she didn’t want bees. Or honey. Or whatever. So she was all stinger.
She and Alex didn’t need men. The two of them and Violet would be just fine.
And yet at this moment, Ivy couldn’t stop thinking about Brent. Alex hadn’t warned her that he looked . . . like that. Like six-feet, two-inches of hotness straight out of a Mechanics of Your Dreams calendar. Jesus. That dark hair, those full lips that smirked, those slate eyes that did nothing to hide the fact that this man was trouble with a capital T.
“Iv-eeeeee.” Alex drew out her name in that way only big sisters could do when they planned to interrogate.
Ivy poked the wheat bread of her sandwich. “What?”
“Why are you concerned about Brent’s feelings?”
She didn’t know. Honestly and truly, she didn’t know, but she couldn’t forget that momentary flash of emotion that passed over his face before he covered it with a smirk. “I don’t know; he’s your coworker and—”
“I know he’s basically sex on legs, Ivy, but he knows it. And I’d be hard-pressed to find a woman who hasn’t taken a ride in this town.”
Ivy pressed her lips together, chastising herself for letting her soft heart show. She needed to focus on finding a job and raising her daughter. Those were her priorities. Not going toe-to-toe with some cocky hot guy. “You’re right; forget I said anything.” Ivy held up her index fingers and crossed them in an X. “No men.”
“Ick,” Alex spat.
“Gross,” Ivy said.
Alex grinned at her, and Ivy returned it, sipping from her iced tea. “So, work going okay?”
“Yeah, I like it here. Cal’s fair. Brent’s fun to work with. Jack’s still a hard-ass but I think he’s warming to me.”
Alex had told Ivy that Brent and Cal’s dad was a brick wall of gruff and stubborn. “Good.”
“Violet off to school okay?” Alex asked.
Ivy’s daughter was in first grade at White Pine Elementary School in the Tory school district. They’d moved in time for her start at the beginning of the school year. “Her teacher called me again, saying Vi cried on and off this morning.” Ivy knew moving was hard on her, but they hadn’t had much of a choice. “I hate this.”
Alex squeezed Ivy’s hand where it rested on the table. “It’s school. You’re not torturing her. She’ll get used to it.”
Ivy’s stomach rolled, thinking about it. “I hope.”
“She’s a good kid. She just needs time.”
Ivy sighed. “I guess.”
“Alex,” a deep voice said from the doorway. Ivy craned her head to see a man who looked a lot like Brent but . . . wasn’t Brent.
“Yeah?” Alex answered.
The man nodded at Ivy. “I’m Cal.” He turned to Alex. “Sorry. I know you’re eating lunch, but got that customer of yours out front from last week. I tried talking to her, but she likes you better.”
Alex laughed. “Greta Sherman?”
“That’s the one.”
She balled up her empty sandwich wrapper. “I’ll be back in a couple of minutes,” she said to Ivy.
Ivy looked down at her half-eaten lunch. “I can leave—”
“Nah, I’ll be right back. You finish eating.”
Alex tossed her trash into the can on the way out.
Ivy took a sip of her tea and picked at her sandwich. She’d spent all morning on the computer, applying for jobs in and around Tory. It wasn’t necessarily a mecca of job opportunities, but Alex had found a place she fit in, and the pay wasn’t bad. Ivy had some savings, but it wasn’t going to last forever, and she wanted to pull her weight in the little family they’d created.
Her résumé was a bit slim. She had a high school diploma but no college degree, having spent her early twenties raising Violet. Her job options in Tory were working as a secretary for a lawyer, selling furniture at a department store, or being a nanny.
None was appealing.
But at least they all paid.
The chair across from her squeaked, and she lifted her gaze, opening her mouth to tell Alex about her job options.
Except Alex wasn’t sitting across from her.
Brent was.
He leaned back in his chair, feet up on the table and crossed at the ankle. He held a packet of peanuts and tipped it so a couple fell into his mouth. He chewed, steel eyes on her.
She clenched her jaw shut.
He swallowed. “You looked like you were going to say something.”
“Sure I was. To Alex. But you’re not Alex.”
“No, I’m not. But I’m a great listener.”
“I’m sure,” she said drily.
His lips quirked. “Want to hear about what other things I’m good at?”
“Not particularly.”
“Because I can do this thing with my tongue—”
Good God. “I don’t do this.”
“Don’t do what?”
She waved a hand between them. “This. Flirting.”
He raised his eyebrows. “Babe, I haven’t even begun to flirt.”
She took a deep breath to calm her rising blood pressure. “Don’t do that either.”
“Jesus! Now what?” His exasperation might have been cute if she still had a heart.
“Nicknames.”
“Babe?”
“My name is Ivy. I-V-Y. Three letters. Two syllables.” Even she wanted to cringe at how much of a bitch she was being.
He was studying her now, his face a little less amused and more . . . thoughtful. She didn’t like thoughtful Brent. Amused, flirting Brent? Harmless. Thoughtful Brent, who tried to look deeper? Dangerous as hell.
He ran two fingers over his lips and then dropped his hand to the table, cocking his head. “You’re just thorns everywhere I touch, aren’t you?”
She froze at his words, like a deer in headlights because yes—yes, she was a whole lot of thorns because she’d learned long ago they were necessary to protect all her soft parts.
Brent wasn’t done, though; his voice was softer when he spoke again. “You born that way, or something make you that way, Ivy?”
She swallowed. Yep, Brent Payton was dangerous in a sexy-as-hell package. His words were seeping past those thorns, hitting all the spots where she was weak. So she gathered herself and clenched her fists at her sides. “You’re just acting like this because I’m the first woman who hasn’t fallen at your feet.”
He laughed at that. “Fallen at my feet? Nah, there are plenty of women who’ve told me to go to hell. My percentage is good, though. Maybe eighty-twenty.” He grinned that shit-eating grin. “But you got me curious now. I wanna keeping prodding until I find a place that isn’t a thorn. How long do you think that’ll take me?”
Shit, no; that’s exactly what she didn’t want. With those eyes that were smart and trouble at the same time.
She swallowed and straightened her spine. “You’ll never get close enough.”
He cocked his head. “No?”
“No.”
He hummed a little and leaned back in his chair again. He threw a peanut in the air and caught it in his mouth. Then he chewed, with those steel eyes daring her to look away. “Guess I gotta plan my attack better next time, huh? You better work on those defenses.”
She heard Alex’s voice as her sister made her way back to the lunchroom. Ivy smiled and lifted her chin. “Who says I’ll be the one who needs defense?”
He laughed sharply, like he was surprised. “Oh, babe, bring it.”
She gritted her teeth. “Ivy.”
“Babe. I call it as I see it, and you’re definitely babe.”
Ivy growled.
He smiled, and then he was up out of his chair and walking out the door as Alex made her way in. Her eyes trailed Brent as he retreated to the garage.
Alex turned to Ivy, eyes concerned. “Was he bothering you?”
Bothering didn’t even touch it. “No, he’s fine. Nothing I can’t handle.”
Alex shrugged. “I can talk to him—”
“Alex, I swear, it was nothing, and even if it was, I could handle it.”
Her sister eyed her and then stole a bite of her sandwich. “Fine; now eat. You’re getting skinny.”
“Quit mothering me.”
Alex pointed to the sandwich with raised eyebrows, and Ivy glared at her as she took a bite.

REVIEW: RUN ! is the third installment in Peter Darley’s adult Hold On military suspense (slightly sci-fi/paranormal) series focusing on former soldier Brandon Drake.

NOTE: There may be some spoilers in my review if you have not read the previous installments.

Told from several third person perspectives RUN commences several weeks following the events of GO ! book two wherein Brandon Drake is presumed dead following an explosion aimed at ending his life. At a secret government facility in the Mojave desert Brandon is very much alive and unaware of the last four years of his life. The Brandon Drake we have come to love is no longer the Brandon Drake who awakens from a six week coma-he is a changed man; a man who has undergone a personality reassignment making Brandon one of the most dangerous men on the planet. While his former love grieves for what could have been, Brandon sets out to destroy everything that was and still remains in his life including the woman he can no longer remember.

Peter Darley’s RUN is the culmination of one man’s descent into H*ll and back; a former soldier whose entire life has been focused upon inflicting pain and suffering on anyone who stands between Brandon and his latest assignment. Brandon is a mercenary; a soldier for hire, whose earlier years of abuse and torture at the hands of his foster father, have shaped the beast known as The Scorpion. As The Scorpion Brandon is feared; a take no prisoners attitude whose aim is deadly with accurate results.

RUN is a storyline with graphic violence; an anti hero whose murderous spree and the resulting carnage will claim numbers in the hundreds as the FBI, CIA and secret government divisions hunt for the man whose need for revenge is a promise not a threat.

Once again, RUN, like the previous installments, has a large ensemble cast of supporting and secondary characters including Brandon’s family who become one of Brandon’s primary targets. A good portion of the storyline is driven by the others: some with murderous intent; some with aspirations of ultimate global powers; and others who are hoping to survive another day.

The world building no longer focuses on Brandon Drake and Belinda Reese but on Brandon’s slide into the abyss. Several government agencies will go in search for Brandon but most will find themselves on the receiving end of Brandon’s need for vengeance and death.

RUN! is a revealing, imaginative and suspense filled conclusion to Peter Darley’s HOLD ON series. The non-stop action finds Brandon Drake ferreting out his next victim with sensational and dramatic results; very few will survive a face to face meeting. Brandon Drake aka The Scorpion is the result of a government experiment gone horribly wrong; where mind control has yet to reach its zenith when love and emotions continue to war with what’s real, what’s unknown, and a mind previously destroyed by an abusive past.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date July 7, 2014

Two lovers! A deadly conspiracy! A race to freedom!

When Carringby Industries, a government-contracted arms manufacturer, is raided by what appear to be terrorists, the CEO’s secretary, Belinda Reese, is rescued by Brandon Drake, a dashing young AWOL soldier. Using an experimental test aircraft, he flees with her to his remote, isolated cabin in the mountains of Aspen.

While assisting in the design of military weaponry, Brandon discovered a plot within his own government to attack its own facilities, under the guidance of immoral politician, Senator Garrison Treadwell. Belinda’s body was not found among the dead at Carringby Industries, and Treadwell suspects that Drake was responsible for rescuing her. In an effort to entrap him, Treadwell arranges for an all points bulletin to be placed on Belinda

Deeply in love, Brandon and Belinda attempt to escape from America, only to endure one harrowing experience after another as they try to evade and expose Treadwell’s corrupt faction.

But on the run, with danger around every corner, Brandon makes a discovery so devastating that it shatters the very foundations of his reality.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date May 26, 2015

Brandon Drake has escaped from Leavenworth, aided by a new player who has entered the game. Tyler Faraday is the heir to an empire––and Brandon’s long-lost brother. Tyler enables Brandon’s reunion with his lover, Belinda, but Brandon is no longer the man she once knew. Haunted by memories of a life that never happened, he succumbs to the lure of alcohol.

Tyler has discovered he and Brandon have another sibling. Having been raised in a convent, their sister, Emily, has a crisis of faith and flees. On the road, she is kidnapped by a ruthless human trafficking organization run by a mysterious kingpin called Sapphire. Brandon, Tyler, and Belinda learn of Emily’s plight and begin their search for Sapphire’s location, hampered by Brandon’s growing alcohol dependency.

Meanwhile, Andrew Wilmot, new leader of a rogue government faction, seeks to use Brandon for his own nefarious plans, and hunts him down.

Brandon, Belinda, and Tyler’s quest leads to Los Angeles, where they search for the only one who knows Sapphire’s location––a former captive known only as Siren, and who may not even exist. Their quest is destined to lead to the most explosive action in the series so far.

Guest Post

The End? Or the REAL Beginning?

Well, what can I say? It’s been one hell of a ride through a cavalcade of cliffhangers to rival even those in the Hold On! series, itself. However, this time, it has resulted in a contender for the most extraordinary alliance in the world of contemporary literature. J

First, I will say a few things about Run! – Hold On! Season 3. Unlike Hold On! and Go! I knew exactly where the story was going before I even started writing it. The first two seasons introduced numerous concepts and characters that only received mentions. In a couple of cases, certain characters had been introduced previously, but wound up on the cutting room floor due to third party interference. Run! gave me the opportunity to bring these characters back into the official canon. Brandon’s commanding officer, his superior at Mach Industries, his abusive foster father, and Belinda’s mother-from-hell, all finally appear in the Trilogy’s conclusion.

I knew that I had to do something unexpected with the final act, and this one turns the entire concept on its head. Brandon’s malevolent, true persona, The Scorpion, only ever appeared fleetingly in the previous two novels, and was never explored as an actual character. He was just something that came over him during times of crisis. In Run! we get to experience who The Scorpion really is, and the extent to which the series’ hero could be irredeemably evil. Where before he saved his loved ones from certain peril, he is now the one they need saving from. The opening chapter tells the complete origin story, snippets of which had only previously been mentioned, or seen in flashbacks with no context.

However, fear not. The Interceptor – the heroic Brandon from Hold On! and Go! – is still around. Run! concludes all existing plotlines – but also leaves a door open for an entirely new one. I endeavoured to ensure that the hypothetical ‘next story’, Hold On! – Tomorrow, wasn’t absolutely necessary, and left it to my readers to decide if it should happen. So far, the idea has been received with great eagerness, which has thrilled me enormously.

But then I received a message on Facebook that made the next book an absolute certainty. Several months ago, just for fun, I created the hypothetical Hold On! soundtrack video, made up of the melodic rock songs that drove the original novel, and posted it on Youtube:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AsPF7E6zgAM

I took the title ‘Hold On’ from the fact that it is, hands down, the most used song title in the AOR/Melodic Rock genre.

Nothing really happened with the music video until a few weeks ago when Pierpaolo ‘Zorro11’ Monti, the founder of one of the bands featured in the video, contacted me.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pierpaolo_Monti

He was so intrigued that I’d used one of his tracks in the video that he plugged it on rock sites across the internet. Suddenly, I was getting tagged and ‘friended’ by rock celebrities, and Pierpaolo and I quickly became friends.

Pierpaolo is the mastermind behind critically-acclaimed rock album projects, Shining Line, Charming Grace, and Room Experience, and he dropped a bombshell on me that literally blew me away. He wants to write and record the official theme song for Hold On! – Tomorrow, for inclusion on his next album. Movies and TV shows have ‘songs from’ soundtrack albums. But I don’t think this has ever happened with a book before.

I feel that this is an astonishing and unique alliance between fiction writer and musician. After a devastatingly harrowing journey through the writing world, I now have the opportunity to take the series farther, with the might of the rock world behind me. J

I have just begun working on Hold On! – Tomorrow, and over the next year, Pierpaolo and I will be liaising about the plot, and subsequently – the lyrics. I hope to release the new book – along with the theme song – toward the end of summer, 2016.

Flame Unleashed by Jillian David – a Review

Flame Unleashed by Jillian David – a Review

Flame UnleashedAmazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / BAM

Description:
When Civil War nurse Ruth Blackstone sacrificed her soul to save her husband’s life, he utterly betrayed her trust. Now, 150 years later, she’s still stuck killing depraved souls to feed her devil of a boss, Jerahmeel. She’s never been one for hair-brained schemes or sweet-talking flirts. That is, until she meets Cajun rogue Odie Pierre-Noir.

Odie has the research and the war plan to overthrow Jerahmeel and win freedom for all Indebteds. There’s just one hitch: he needs Ruth to act as bait. With charm on his side, he shows Ruth an intense passion she’s never experienced before.

Now Ruth must make the hardest decision of her long, damned life: continue in relative safety as an Indebted with Odie as her lover, or risk their eternal souls for one chance to break the curse. Will she choose the lesser evil?

Review:

I loved the first two books in this series, I didn’t think it would get any better……
Flame Unleashed is the third and final book in the Hell To Pay trilogy by Jillian David.  To be honest you could read it as a stand alone, but as we meet both the couples from the previous books, it would probably help. I enjoyed reading all three together.

We first met Ruth in the previous book. She was playing a part of a nurse, we don’t get much on her character, she seemed a quiet person, but I also got the impression that she was a very caring person. But Ruth isn’t an ordinary person, she is an indebted.  An immortal assassin, chained by the devil, she kills evil with her specially given dagger, hoping one day to repay the debt and be free.

(An indebted is someone that has signed a contract and given their soul over to Jerahmeel who is Satan in human form. When an indebted kills someone evil, their evil essence is drawn in to the knife and feeds Jerahmeel, and an indebted cannot fight the need to kill.)

As the story evolves, we find out how Ruth became an indebted, it’s a sad tale of betrayal and deceit.  When she is given a task, Ruth wears a disguise, she becomes a totally different person, is this to help her, or does it shield the real Ruth, if her soul is a caring person, wouldn’t this slowly destroy her? Does Ruth even know the real person anymore?

The first time Odie and Ruth meet, the attraction is there, there spark of electricity when they touched. But Ruth cannot allow herself to ever trust a man again after the betrayal of her husband, so she does all she can to convince Odie she doesn’t like him.

Odie has been researching and planning for his entire existence to find a way to end Jerahmeel and to free himself and other indebted. When he meets Ruth, he knows that he needs her to help him to carry out his plan.

I wasn’t too keen on our hero at first, I got the impression that he was out to use Ruth. He notices that his boss Jerahmeel has a fascination for Ruth, if she’s on a mission, he will pop up and make her uncomfortable. He seems fascinated with her; does he have feelings for her ?  Odie sees this, as the perfect way to use Ruth as bait to finally kill Jerahmeel.

But he happily proved me wrong.  When they FINALLY decide to be together, the connection they have to each other was great to read. They care about each other deeply. The chemistry was sizzling between Odie and Ruth.

We also get to spend time with Peter and Allie and their beautiful new baby, (hero and heroine from book one) and Dante and Hannah (they were the main characters from the second book.)

And the build up to the final showdown was intense and crazy. I’m not going to give anything away, but it could go either way. Does Odie’s plan work? Will their boss discover their plan and make them pay?

I’m sad that the series has ended, but I’ve enjoyed the ride.
