ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date October 12, 2015

Description:
Dragos Cuelebre, Lord of the Wyr, needs to throw a party without maiming anyone. That isn’t exactly as easy as it might sound.

After the destructive events of the last eighteen months, the Elder Races are heading to Washington D.C. to foster peace with humankind. Not known for his diplomacy skills, Dragos must rely on his mate Pia to help navigate a battlefield of words and polite smiles rather than claws. With Dragos’s mating instinct riding close to the surface, his temper is more volatile than ever and the threat of violence hovers in the air.

Then the human spouse of a prominent politician winds up murdered and Dragos and Pia must race against time to hunt down those behind it before they are held responsible for the crime.

Barb’s Review:
Dragos Goes to Washington by Thea Harrison is book 8.5 of her fantastic Elder Races series.   This is a novella that starts off a new trilogy with two more books coming in Novemb er and December. I love this series, and always look forward to whatever Thea gives us with the Elder Races.

In Dragos Goes to Washington, the story picks up after the last full length book, which had many deaths for the Nightkind.   Because of this, all the Wyr are attending a meeting in Washington with humankind to discuss peace.

Before they leave for Washington, Dragos and Pia (we never have enough of them together) make a rash decision to try for another child, since Liam is growing up too fast. The sex scenes between these two are always off the wall, especially this drives Dragos mating urges close to the top. Heaven forbid anyone comes close to Pia or tries to offer help. LOL Time to run from the fire of the dragon.

Before they leave, Pia begins to get sick, constantly throwing up often, and she hides this from Dragos, knowing how important this meeting is. At the party, the tension is high, as they meet the humankind President and Vice President. Dragos senses the Vice President and other high ranking members are cloaking their scent, which is a danger signal to him. Before the night is out, a high ranking official is murdered, and all eyes are on the Wyr, as the guilty party. Dragos and Pia work together to find the real culprits, who are behind this new attempt to destroy the peaceful relationships of the Wyr and Humankind.

To tell too much more would be spoilers.   I loved being able to see many of our favorites again. This was a sexy, fun storyline, with action and mystery. There will also be more revelations that will lead to the next two books in this novella trilogy. I cannot wait for the next one, Pia Goes to Hollywood.

Sandy’s Review: (some information may overlap between reviews)

REVIEW: DRAGOS GOES TO WASHINGTON is the latest installment in Thea Harrison’s adult Elder Races paranormal, romance series, and the first in her three-story novella series focusing on Dragos, Pia and Liam Cuelebre. I would recommend reading this particular novella series in order although some background about the original series is beneficial for overall enjoyment

Told from third person perspective (Pia) DRAGOS GOES TO WASHINGTON follows the Wyr royal couple as they embark on a week-long engagement to Washington DC as part of a peace keeping assembly involving the Elder Races and humankind. But all does not go according to plan, when the vice-president’s husband is murdered and all clues point to a supernatural murder. Meanwhile, the mating frenzy takes over for Pia and Dragos, and our leading couple find themselves taking every available opportunity to try and make a baby.

DRAGOS GOES TO WASHINGTON has a little bit of everything-politics, discrimination, murder, betrayal and plenty of $ex as Dragos and Pia enter into the mating frenzy. The world building continues to focus on the tepid relationship between the supernatural races and humans; the race to the finish finds our leading lady in a precarious situation. The murder mystery is solved rather quickly without any fanfare or time invested into a lengthy investigation.

Thea Harrison has written a story for the fans of her Elder Races Series. We get a quick look at some of the previous storyline couples-by way of mention or presence-as well as the continued animosity between species and mankind. DRAGOS GOES TO WASHINGTON is an enjoyable novella-a quick read that follows the Wyr first family, and their attempts to maintain peace in a volatile situation.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date October 13, 2015

I didn’t think answering someone else’s cellphone would change my life. But the stranger with the low, deep voice on the other end of the line tempted me, awakened my body, set me on fire. He was looking for someone else. Instead he found me.

And I found a hot, secret world where I felt alive for the first time.

His name was Dylan, and, strangely, he made me feel safe. Desired. Compelled. Every dark thing he asked me to do, I did. Without question. I longed to meet him, but we were both keeping secrets. And mine were dangerous. If I took the first step, if I got closer to Dylan—emotionally, physically—then I wouldn’t be hiding anymore. I would be exposed, with nothing left to surrender but the truth. And my truth could hurt us both.

••••••••••••

REVIEW: EVERYTHING I LEFT UNSAID is the first installment in Molly O’Keefe’s contemporary adult Everything I Left Unsaid erotic, romantic suspense duology focusing on Annie McKay and Dylan Daniels.

Told from first person point of view (Annie) and third person perspective (Dylan) EVERYTHING I LEFT UNSAID follows Annie aka Layla on the run from her abusive husband, arriving in Carolina from the Flatlands of Oklahoma. Layla is hiding and working in a run down, trailer park to escape her life and the man who has all but destroyed everything she has ever loved. Enter the mysterious Dylan Daniels, a former NASCAR driver, and the man who will be the focus in all of Annie’s fantasies and dreams. When Annie answers a lost cell phone, she will inadvertently becomes part of Dylan’s life, but Dylan wants to remain anonymous, and Annie becomes a distraction that he isn’t willing to give up.

A good portion and the foundation of the storyline follows Annie and Dylan’s phone Sex and text messages. Not having yet met face to face with Annie, Dylan and Annie’s relationship is sexually aggressive and suggestive with Dylan instructing Annie in the ways of pleasuring herself and talking dirty on the phone. Annie is an innocent; inexperienced; and naïve. Dylan is an enigma with a dark past, and an even darker present. What little we know, leaves us wanting more. Most of the $ex scenes are limited to phone $ex; their physical intimacy has an expiry date when Annie decides she doesn’t want or need Dylan’s help.

EVERYTHING I LEFT UNSAID has a large ensemble cast of characters from the Flowered Manor Trailer Park and Camp Ground: Joan the stripper who hides her true identity from those around; elderly Ben whose past is mired in dark and dangerous secrets; Kevin the trailer park manager who hires Annie for maintenance and clean up; and Tiffany, a young mother in an abusive relationship.

The world building focuses on the lives of the people at the Flowered Manor Trailer Park and Camp Ground; Annie’s need to keep ahead of her past; and Dylan’s hermit existence upon the mountain he works and owns.

EVERYTHING I LEFT UNSAID ends on a cliffhanger that leaves many unanswered questions about the how and why. Dylan’s life is revealed a little at a time, but our leading hero has secrets that he doesn’t want anyone to know. EVERYTHING I LEFT UNSAID is a story of mystery and suspense; flawed, impassioned characters with heartbreaking stories and tragic lives but saying that the storyline barely scratches the surface of the truth. EVERYTHING I LEFT UNSAID leaves you wanting more-right now !

Interview

TRC: Hi Molly and welcome to The Reading Café.

We would like to start with some background information. Please tell us something about your self?

Molly O'KeefeMolly: Well, I’m a romance novelist by day and an ass-kicking vigilante at night? Actually, I’m a mom and romance novelist by day and exhausted at night. No time for ass-kicking vigilantism. I’ve written 30 books for Harlequin and Bantam over the last fifteen years.

I have two great kids and a lovely husband. We live in Toronto, Canada.

TRC: Who or what influenced your career in writing?

Molly: I’ve wanted to be a writer since I was a kid. And a romance novelist since I was about fifteen years old. I’ve been incredibly lucky over the years to meet mentors, teachers and friends exactly when I needed them. And all along I’ve had hundreds of amazing books to inspire me.

TRC: What challenges or difficulties have you encountered writing and publishing your stories?

Molly: Well, this business is both a challenge and a difficulty and an opportunity – often all at the same time. I find the largest challenge I have is in my own head. Staying motivated, not comparing my career to other author’s careers. Keeping my head down and getting the work done and constantly and consistently finding joy in the process and work.

Everything I Left UnsaidTRC: Would you please tell us something about premise of EVERYTHING I LEFT UNSAID-the first book in the series of the same name?

Molly: Well, it’s a dulogy – the first book ENDS ON A WICKED CLIFFHANGER – so be warned!

It’s about a woman on the run from her abusive ex-husband. She ends up in a trailer park in the middle of nowhere and finds a ringing cell phone that had been left behind by the previous tenant. She answers the phone and begins a dangerous and sexual relationship with the man on the other end.

The characters don’t actually meet for a huge portion of the book – so it’s all done through phone calls and texts.

TRC: Are any of the characters based in reality or a mixture of real and fiction?

Molly: Well, the hero is HEAVILY inspired by the delicious actor Tom Hardy!

TRC: How many books do you have planned for the series?

Molly: Well there’s Everything I Left Unsaid, The Truth About Him and then at least two more. Possibly more.

TRC: How do you keep the plot(s) unpredictable without sacrificing content and believability?

Molly: It’s a matter of very carefully leaving hints so that when a big twist happens the reader is totally surprised and can still believe it.

TRC: There is a fine line between romance, erotic, and erotica in many of today’s popular contemporary fiction. What do you believe accounts for the differences between the sub-genres in today’s romantic stories?

Molly: That’s such a great question! When I started writing Everything I Left Unsaid I thought it was going to be just like my other books but with this really sexy premise. But then as I started to write it – everything was just…sharper. More dramatic. The language – the POV’s….so that’s one difference.

As for the erotica – I think the more crucial the sexual relationship is to the storyline and the characters development and arc – the more erotic the romance. And then it’s a matter of making those scenes as charged and unpredictable as possible.

TRC: Do you believe the cover image plays a deciding factor for many readers in the process of selecting a book or new series to read?

Molly: Absolutely. Lots of readers – myself included – pick up books on the amazing covers alone. I’ve found so many great books because of it. I’ve been burned too, but it’s a gamble I love taking!!

TRC: The mark of a good writer is to pull the reader into the storyline so that they experience the emotions along with the characters. What do you believe a writer must do to make this happen?

Molly: I think it’s a combination of a lot of things – for me it’s a matter of making the characters as human as I can – which means real and relatable flaws. Slick, perfect characters are a total turn-off for me.

After I come up with my characters and make them as three dimensional as possible – then it’s a matter of showing the characters to the reader.

I think as writers write faster and faster – we’re getting told so much about the story and the characters. We need to get back to that immersive showing rather than the slick telling.

TRC: Many authors bounce ideas and information with other authors or friends and family. With whom do you bounce ideas?

Molly: I’ve had a crucial group of writer friends since the very beginning of my career. I would be LOST without them.

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date Octboer 6, 2015

All his life, Reyes Alexander Farrow has suffered the torments of the damned. Only one thing has given him hope: the woman who radiates a light that no mortals can see; a light that only the departed can see…

Told from his point of view, BRIGHTER THAN THE SUN chronicles the first time Reyes ever encountered Charley, and how their relationship has been the one thing that can either save him or doom him.

•••••••••

REVIEW: BRIGHTER THAN THE SUN is a novella in Darynda Jones’s adult CHARLEY DAVIDSON urban fantasy series told from Reyes Alexander Farrow’s point of view. Darynda Jones takes the reader back to a time just prior to Charley’s birth that finds Reyes following what he believes is a dream-a bright light that calls to him-of a young child, then woman, who is, from birth, the Grim Reaper. BRIGHTER THAN THE SUN runs parallel to several of the events in Darynda Jones’s Charley Davidson series.

We get up close and personal with Reyes as he suffers a myriad of abuses at the hands of Earl Walker; and the introduction of his ‘sister’ Kim whom Reyes protects even though he knows he will be the recipient of the torture and abuse. Most of the abuse is ‘behind the scenes’ or implied; there is no graphic text to abhor the reader.

BRIGHTER THAN THE SUN is a quick and simple read that is completely different in tone and emotion than any of the previous installments. The storyline is a darker read without the usual humor, one-liners, witty banter or t-shirt logos that Darynda and her Charley Davidson series are known for. It is a short story that doesn’t add any new or specific information to the series but expands upon what the reader already knows with more details and some background history. We do learn why it is Reyes calls Charley Dutch 😉 Darynda Jones focuses on Reyes-his early years; his need to protect Charley; and the knowledge that Satan’s son has suffered because of who he is, and what he will become.

BRIGHTER THAN THE SUN is a wonderful read to fill in the details that were missing about Reyes’s younger years and his love for the woman who could one day destroy the world.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date September 29, 2015

When his uncle is brutally murdered, Josiah King knows that business just got personal. His uncle’s ties to the Alliance can mean only one thing: Josiah and his black ops team are targets, along with everyone they love. Primed for vengeance, Josiah is determined to unravel the plot–until long-legged redhead Sutton Dahl becomes a dangerous distraction.

Sutton is very good at uncovering other people’s secrets—and protecting her own. When Josiah bursts into her life she’s torn between pushing him away and asking for his help. Mysterious, strong, and much too sexy, he’s a puzzle she longs to solve, and a temptation she can’t ignore.

Thrown together in the face of Alliance’s most lethal threat, Josiah and Sutton become unlikely partners, fighting for their lives even as the attraction between them flares into real passion. Torn between his team and the woman who means everything to him, Josiah will risk it all to save Sutton, even if that decision is his last.

•••••••••

REVIEW: FACING FIRE is the third full-length installment in HelenKay Dimon’s contemporary, adult Bad Boys Undercover romantic suspense series focusing on an undercover Black Ops organization known as the Alliance. This is Alliance operative Josiah King, and PI Sutton Dahl’s storyline. FACING FIRE can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty although I would recommend reading the series in order for cohesion and backstory. Any important information from previous storylines is imparted where necessary.

NOTE: There may be some spoilers in my review if you are a follower of HelenKay Dimon’s BAD BOYS UNDERCOVER series. At the end of FALLING HARD (BBU #2) the Alliance Team’s target is presumed dead and gone.

Told from several third person perspectives FACING FIRE follows the Alliance Team as they are once again threatened by an enemy known only as Benton. Benton is seeking revenge against the Alliance Team for the physical and emotional damage caused when Benton survived a fiery explosion that left him scarred. Benton is evil; seeks world domination through chemical warfare and is offering a secret weapon to the highest bidder. When Benton targets Josiah King, Josiah loses someone close in the ensuing carnage and death. Enter Sutton Dahl-a woman hoping to get close enough to a man named Bane, to seek revenge of a different kind-but first Sutton must convince the Alliance Team that she is not partnered with Benton in his crimes against Josiah and the team.

The attraction between Josiah and Sutton is immediate but Josiah does not trust Sutton as she keeps secret her need to make contact with Bane. Sutton’s connection to the Alliance Team proves dangerous when she is tagged by Benton in his plans for revenge and retribution. The $ex scenes are provocative and erotic but Josiah is slow to accept that Sutton does not mean any harm against the people with whom he works and loves.

FACING FIRE is an ensemble storyline that includes several member of the Alliance Team whose relationship is that of family and friends. There is good natured camaraderie between friends; and heartbreak when one of their own sacrifices himself to save the others.

The world building continues to focus on the assignments, and Benton’s need for global control. Benton is a man on a mission: the Alliance Team and everyone they love has been targeted in the name of revenge.

FACING FIRE is a story of suspense, romance and intrigue: the premise is entertaining; the characters are animated and energetic; the romance is seductive. I was drawn into the storyline-became one with the characters-I felt their heartbreak and need.

excerpt

Josiah King reached for his gun and grabbed only air. Not that a weapon would do him any good. Shooting a wall-sized monitor wouldn’t stop the bloodthirsty execution unfolding in front of him.
“What are you watching . . . Wait, where is this feed coming in from?” Mike Shelby asked as he walked up to stand next to his team leader. “Man, I hope this is some sort of training exercise because that guy looks like shit.”“It’s real. A video. One-way, and I have no idea how were getting it.” But this was personal and meant for him. Josiah knew that much. “I’m pretty sure it’s live.” It had to be because Josiah would know if this horror had already happened. They all would. No, this hell played out in real time.“So we can see this poor bastard but he can’t hear or see us?” Mike got up close and squinted as his gaze scanned every inch of the screen. Even waved his hand in front of the monitor. “I don’t get it. What exactly is this?”

Josiah feared he knew the answer. “A message.”

“For?”

“Me.” That’s really all he could say. He couldn’t wrap his mind around the idea of his personal life being beamed into a secure facility as spectator sport.

Mike glanced over, already frowning. “What?” Josiah kept staring up at the center screen hanging right in front of him in the Warehouse, the de facto headquarters of the undercover task force called the Alliance. He blinked a few times, sure he’d fallen into a bleak nightmare he needed to fight and punch his way out of if he ever wanted to breathe again.

Somehow he spat out the right answer. “Uncle.” Mike shifted the whole way around and faced Josiah head on. “Uncle . . . as in your uncle?”

The man highlighted on the screen in front of them looked like a version of the very formidable 3rd Earl of Stonechase, Thomas Benedict Asher, a hereditary peer in the House of Lords. For Josiah, simply the uncle who taught him how to fish. Now a man tied to a chair, his white hair sticking out in every direction. His usually pristine white shirt ripped open to reveal the folds of pale skin around his stomach and spray of gray hair on his chest.

Blood ran in a line from his temple. More pooled in a circle near his heart. Yet more on his wrist. He’d been beaten and strapped down in a room painted gray with high ceilings and dramatic print curtains. Josiah couldn’t see the bookcases he knew lined the wall, but he recognized the desk. Intricately carved, with a secret compartment used by his ancestors as they passed the secrets of the four-story stone manse down from generation to generation along with the title and the land.

It all looked familiar except for the bomb strapped to his uncle’s chest and the obvious shake moving through him. Those were the parts that finally registered in Josiah’s brain and kick-started him into action. This was no nightmare. He couldn’t wake up, couldn’t unsee the scene unfolding in front of him.

“Phone.” He snapped his fingers and pointed to his cell on the conference table behind Mike. “Get me a phone.”

“It’s . . . it’s too late for me. I will . . . die.” His uncle’s voice, usually perfectly smooth, held a rough edge as he stumbled over the words and his voice trembled. He stared straight ahead, probably into a camera, in a way that looked like he was talking directly to Josiah through the monitor. “No matter what action you take that will happen.”

Mike froze as he handed over the cell. “Sweet Jesus.” Through the haze falling over Josiah he realized the clipped words coming through the monitor speakers weren’t delivered in his uncle’s normal style. That likely meant he read from a script or something similar. No question someone wanted to deliver a haunting message and decided to use an old man to do it.

“He says you caused this.” His uncle’s gaze darted up and to the right as he spoke, as if he were taking direction from someone in the room.

Josiah hit a few buttons and dialed to get through to his uncle’s house. A beeping sound greeted him, so he tried again, desperate to hear the familiar voice.

“Anything?” Mike’s gaze did not waver from the screen as he slipped his phone out of his back pocket.

“No.” He was going to fucking fail again. Josiah could feel it. Be so close but not on time.

His heartbeat thundered in his chest. He’d spent a lifetime in the intelligence service. Seen people cut down by bullets and shredded by explosions. He’d stayed focused. Now, his mind took off on a wild rush and he fought to wrestle it back under control. Strategies bombarded his brain, none of them workable from his position on the grounds of Liberty Crossing, the modern complex outside Washington, DC, that housed the National Counterterrorism Center. Virginia had never seemed farther away from his uncle’s London townhouse than right now.

“You and your team ruined everything.” His uncle visibly swallowed as the trail of blood seeped down his cheek and his gaze stayed locked on the camera, which must have sat just out of sight. “Now you’ll pay.”

“He’s being told what to say but seems to know he’s talking to you.” Mike didn’t wait for agreement. He shook his head. “I’m calling everyone in.”

No one else stood in the room with them. Bravo leader Ford Decker had his team practicing building raid maneuvers. Josiah had his Delta team muster for weight training earlier but they’d all moved out after showers, taking the rest of the day for some much-needed time off.

Somewhere the people who ran the Alliance sat in their offices across the Liberty Crossing grounds. Being people with access to everything they’d have access to this feed, as would other intelligence services, which were likely monitoring and mobilizing. Josiah knew in the next five minutes people would pour through the doors with theories and strategies. Later there would be questions about how this video beamed into the Warehouse with such apparent ease, about protocols and firewalls, but none of that mattered now.

He hit the emergency button and the metal doors clanked and locked with heavy precision as the Warehouse switched into lockdown mode, trapping them inside. The move would send a warning to the entire Alliance team. Bravo, Delta, and admin would get the call to come rushing back to assist. As he waited for that to happen he tried his uncle again, this time using private backdoor numbers.

The ringing in his ear echoed on the monitor in front of him. His uncle jerked at the sound but couldn’t go far in his chair thanks to the cords binding him. Something in the room, something Josiah could not see, had his uncle’s gaze shooting to that same corner spot again.

Then he looked directly into the camera. “You can’t stop this, Josiah. Please don’t try . . .”

The brief break in his tone. Josiah read it as a personal plea. One he had to ignore even as he knew to his soul no one could get to his uncle in time.

Phones started ringing in the Warehouse. Josiah could hear Mike relaying information, likely to team members. The other monitors lining the walls flickered to life in front of them and a steady hum filled the room as computers turned on and paper started spilling out of the printer. Lines of information filled one screen. Josiah knew his team had started working its magic but the gnawing in his stomach, the rolling bile, told him whatever they did would be too late.

Mike put a hand over the phone. “Where is he? Which residence are we looking at?”

The behind-the-scenes recon had flipped into action. The people Josiah trusted most in the world likely searched files and made calls to try to find a peaceful end to this. “Belgrave Square. London.”

“Shit, nowhere near here.” Mike repeated the information and listened for a second before disconnecting the line and going back to staring at the screen. “They’re mobilizing MI5 or MI6 or whoever stops bullshit like this in your country other than us.”

But Josiah knew it wasn’t that simple. His uncle possessed resources. Serious resources. “He has security.” Mike shrugged. “We both know that can be broken.”

He didn’t get it. “He has guards, Mike. A damn militia within shouting distance at all times.” Josiah rubbed a hand over his face as he started to pace.

“Who the hell is your uncle?”

He didn’t wallow and never felt helpless. Right now both sensations raced through Josiah. “Someone hard to get to, which I’m assuming is the message here. No one is safe, no matter how well-connected or high up in government.”

He was about to say more, to explain why this could only be described as surreal and impossible and how it shouldn’t be happening, but the words fell away as he clenched the phone even tighter in his palm. He called the line that went directly into his uncle’s home office again, hoping to get through to someone in power and reason with him.

The second after the private line rang his uncle started talking again. “He knows you’re the one calling.”

“Who is the ‘he’ leading all of this?” Mike asked to the monitor as a second screen filled with images of men in uniform, approaching vehicles on the way to the Belgravia residence.

One name popped into Josiah’s head and refused to leave. The name of the same “he” the Alliance had been hunting across every continent, sifting through every lead and turning over every rock, waiting for him to slither out.

“There’s only one person who knows enough background on us to come straight at us like this.” Their nemesis, the enemy of every law enforcement and intelligence operation in the world. The man who hid under the radar until the Alliance had dragged him into the open seven months ago. They’d stopped a major international sale he brokered among some of the worst motherfuckers around, and then destroyed the delivery system he hid in Pakistan to spread a new viral weapon of destruction.
Mike’s mouth dropped open. “It can’t be. No fucking way.”

“He wants you to know how this works . . . for . . .for next time.” His uncle closed his eyes and his head dropped. The rest of the words muffled against his chest. “Because he will not stop. I am only the first.”

Josiah needed to walk, to hit. Much more of watching this and he’d crawl right out of his skin. Claw his own eyes out. “I can’t believe this.”

Mike grabbed the remote and zoomed in on the picture. “If it is him, he’s smart enough to stay far off- screen.”

“Goddamn coward,” Josiah screamed at the screen even though he knew only Mike could hear him.

The minute he had this guy, whoever he was and whatever he called himself, Josiah would use more than words to eliminate the threat. Some people looked at him and saw a proper British businessman. Little did they know what lurked under the surface. The rage. The ability to turn off his humanity and get the job done.

“The bomb is attached to me . . . to my . . .” His uncle squinted as he looked away from the camera. “What did you say?”

A second later horror flashed across his uncle’s face. What was left of the color drained away, replaced by an icy paleness that had Josiah dreading the answer.

“Heartbeat.” His uncle coughed out the word as he faced them again. “As it accelerates, it triggers the bomb.”

Mike turned to Josiah. “Is that even possible?”

He wanted to deny the possibility. They worked for an undercover group that answered to few and were bound by almost no laws or internal government rules. They saw fucking awful things on a daily basis. Women used as pawns and literally ripped in half. Men thrown off buildings and burned alive. And those were the lucky ones. But standing there as a mix of adrenaline and frustration pumped through him, Josiah knew the sick truth.

“Look at the incision.” His gaze wandered over his uncle’s chest, then down to his arm. “The blood. Even if making a human bomb isn’t possible, someone wants us to believe it is.”

“If my heartbeat stays even, he has a . . .”

“A what?” Mike leaned in, as if he were having an actual conversation through the screen.

Josiah watched as his uncle stared right into the camera, unblinking and almost still, and opened his mouth. “Kill switch.”

“Fuck me.” Mike answered the phone and hung up again without talking. “MI5 and SCO19 are moving in now.”

“Firearms Command, like British SWAT.” The words rolled off Josiah’s tongue without even thinking them through first. He’d gone into operations mode. Heard everything around him, saw the battle unfolding on the screens in front of him. Only this time he would not be able to react in time. There wouldn’t be a single defensive maneuver or offensive strike he could launch before death took his uncle.

Mike blew out a long breath. “These armed squads can get in there and—”

“I will be the first but not the last,” his uncle said in a monotone voice, clearly parroting the message he’d been ordered to communicate.

The camera moved back and panned around the room. Men in dark suits, sprawled in lifeless heaps on the floor as blood ran from their bodies and pooled on the carpet that had always been his uncle’s favorite. Worse, he was giving up. Surrendering to the end and letting the terror go. Josiah heard it in his uncle’s voice, saw it in the now-determined lines of his body.

The calmer his uncle became, the more unraveled Josiah felt. He ached to do something—anything— even if it meant tearing the giant screen from the wall and smashing it into pieces on the concrete Warehouse floor.

“You will all pay. You will all watch as . . .” Fear morphed into sadness in his uncle’s eyes as he continued passing on the information he’d clearly been kidnapped to tell. “You will all lose someone you care about.”

Mike grabbed his phone and started punching in numbers. The yelling came next. “Where are these supposedly impressive reinforcements?”

“You need to . . .” His uncle leaned in.

Sensing his uncle was breaking from the prepared script again, Josiah stepped closer to the screen, desperate to hear any piece of intel that might help. Eager to keep his uncle talking until the gunmen had a chance to storm in.

His uncle’s gaze darted around the room as he inhaled. Then his words came out in a rush. “About forty and scarred with burns. He said his name is—”

A sharp bang rang out, making Josiah jump back. He started to rush forward again but his knees buckled and he had to grab the corner of the table to keep from falling as the room on the screen in front of him blew apart.

“No!” But Josiah knew he was too late.

A static buzz sounded in his ears. The talking, the pleading cut off, and the heirloom desk vanished in an explosion of smoke. The room shifted on him as his gaze traveled over the devastation. Everything inside him stopped—his heartbeat, his breathing—as he looked at the splatter of blood and flesh on the screen.

Being thousands of miles away didn’t save him from the pure brutality of the moment. Someone he loved, broken down to nothing more than bone and skin. Not recognizable. Not even human anymore.

“Holy shit.” Mike grabbed Josiah, locked his arms around him, and wrestled him back. “Do not look.”

But he had to. It was all so unreal and impossible. His uncle had people and prestige. This could not happen. “Let me go.”

Mike held on as he stepped in front of Josiah, blocking the direct line of sight. “You don’t need to see any more of this.”

Just as Josiah broke free, the screen went blank. Completely black. He could hear a crunching sound and decided his mind had shut down as some sort of defense mechanism.

He stood there and rocked back on his heels. Buried his face in his hands and silently cursed a world where shit like this happened. As if blowing up another person were normal. “Fuck. I can’t believe . . . fuck.”

“Now what the hell is this?”

Josiah heard the shock in Mike’s voice and looked up. The black screen had turned a smoky gray as the video snapped to life again. The crunching sound grew louder and Josiah could make out legs through the haze. Hear the crackle and thud as each footstep landed on unidentifiable piles of debris on the floor.

The figure turned toward the camera but the lens never strayed higher than knee-level from the floor. Bodies were scattered and shards of what looked like wood stuck up here and there. Papers littered the area and a ball of something—something Josiah feared was once his uncle—lay right between two black wing-tipped dress shoes.

A voice broke into the horrible silence. “The name is Benton, but then I think you know that.”

That word. One name. It’s all they had to go on. All any law enforcement agency in the world had of the faceless, seemingly invisible international terrorist who didn’t pick sides and delivered death and destruction in the form of weapons sold to the highest bidder. A pure psychopath. One sick fuck.

“He survived.” Mike shook his head. “We lit him on fire with a rocket launcher months ago and he lived.”

But that was just it. They did hit him. Josiah knew that now. Gone was the smooth, cultured tone he remembered from their one meeting. Now Benton sounded winded, his voice scratchy. Josiah hoped that meant they’d done some real damage to the guy while in Pakistan. Nothing compared to what Josiah intended to do to him, but something he hoped hurt like hell, burned with pain, every day since.

“Your uncle was a hard man to reach, Josiah.” A harsh laugh followed the line. “But I did. I couldn’t get him to admit he knew you. So proper. So dedicated to protocol and keeping your identity secure. It’s a shame your actions killed him.”

Mike swore under his breath. “This guy sure does like to hear himself talk.”

“I started with Josiah but you’ll all get a turn.” The figure they assumed was Benton shifted as he used the toe of his shoe to push the body at his feet to the side like nothing more than garbage. “Some of you will not be able to hold on to your secrets.” He made an annoying tsk-tsking sound. “And you should know once I kill those you care about most I’ll start again and keep going until the head of everyone you know is splattered in pieces against a wall.”

“Next time I’m putting the rocket launcher right up his ass before I fire,” Mike said to the empty room.

“See you soon.” Benton delivered the line, then the screen blinked out.

For a few seconds they didn’t move. Didn’t talk. Alarms blared inside the Warehouse and monitors not already on sparked to life all around the room. Josiah heard a thunk as the lock on the main doors disengaged. The sound of voices as team members flooded in.

“They won’t catch him.” The police could surround the house and lock it down, and Benton would get out. Josiah didn’t doubt that for a second.

“No, but we will,” Mike said, making every word sound like a guarantee.

“Right.” Josiah stared at the dark screen. “We’re coming for you, asshole.”

The Engagement Game by Jenny Holiday – a Review

The Engagement Game by Jenny Holiday – a Review

The Engagement GameAmazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / BAM

Description:
What’s a little blackmail between friends…

The black sheep of the old-money Rosemanns, advertising executive Marcus has made his own way in the world—and done extremely well for himself—but his family is still pressuring him to join their investment firm and settle down with a quiet, unobjectionable girl.

Which is why the sexy Rose Verma is the perfect date for his family’s charity ball. A bleeding-heart lefty from the wrong side of the tracks, Rose has never met a stray dog she didn’t love or a polka-dotted mini-dress she couldn’t rock. Marcus has enough dirt on Rose to “convince” her to play along. And if he lets it slip that they’re engaged, all the better.

But all’s fair in love and blackmail, and Rose is ready to play a few cards of her own…

Review:

Loved It!!!! I’ve never read a novel by Jenny Holiday before, but I can plainly see I’ve been missing out. The Engagement Game is book 3 of her 49th Floor series and even though I haven’t read the previous two books, this one was no problem to get into. They can all be read as stand alones. The Engagement Game was a fun and flirty read, that had me chuckling out loud a couple of times thanks to our would be couple Rose and Marcus. These two couldn’t have been more opposite to one another, but as they say, opposites attract, and boy oh boy did these two have an attraction to one another.

Rose is a larger then life kind of character that you can’t help but be charmed by from your first encounter with her in this story. She’s the type of woman who can put any colour combo or pattern combo together in her clothing and be able to pull it off. She’s like these women I see out and about and wish that I could pull off that look that they have going on. You know the one’s I mean ladies, the one’s we are envious of. Anyways, I digress, Rose’s witty, quirky, and fun personality just drew me in, and I somehow knew that our straight arrow, no nonsense millionaire was going to have his hands full with her, in more ways then one if you catch my drift. 😉 Even though they butted heads upon their first meeting, that quickly gave way to a fun, flirty, and sexy chemistry that just kept on building throughout the story. I really liked that Ms. Holiday took the slow route with Rose and Marcus’ romance; a) because we got to explore both characters at a leisurely pace and learn what makes them tick, and b) the slow pace only heightened the chemistry between our couple causing a combustible moment when they finally do the deed.

Speaking of getting to know our couple at a leisurely pace, we quickly learn that Marcus has two sides to his personality. The no nonsense millionaire businessman, and a fun flirty side that Rose manages to draw out of him, and make him realize all the fun he’s been missing out on. It’s nice to watch Marcus develop this more relaxed easygoing side with Rose. It makes him all the more charming and appealing, and allows us to see how he suppressed this side of himself thanks to his disaster of a family. Being complete opposites of one another and having grown up on opposite sides of the tracks so to speak, Rose and Marcus are perfect for each other because they bring a nice balance to each other and their lives. Both are so much more because of the other and they really do click from their first meeting. I couldn’t have asked for a better pairing between our hero and heroine in this one. Rose and Marcus are the stars in this book and do they ever shine in their roles.

The Engagement Game by Jenny Holiday is a fast paced, fun and easy read. It’s the perfect type of story for a lazy afternoon, or rainy day where you can just curl up in a cozy blanket with a glass of wine and your book. I loved every minute, and Rose and Marcus were a wonderful, well written couple that had no trouble carrying the story, bringing it to life and keeping me interested right to the very end.

Until next time, happy reading everyone

The North of England seethes with discontent under the heavy hand of William the Conqueror, who unleashes his fury on the rebels who dare to defy him. Amid the ensuing devastation, love blooms in the heart of a gallant Norman knight for a Yorkshire widow.

A LOVE NEITHER CAN DENY, A PASSION NEITHER CAN RESIST

Angry at the cruelty she has witnessed at the Normans’ hands, Emma of York is torn between her loyalty to her noble Danish father, a leader of the rebels, and her growing passion for an honorable French knight.

Loyal to King William, Sir Geoffroi de Tournai has no idea Emma hides a secret that could mean death for him and his fellow knights.

WAR DREW THEM TOGETHER, WAR WOULD TEAR THEM APART

War erupts, tearing asunder the tentative love growing between them, leaving each the enemy of the other. Will Sir Geoffroi, convinced Emma has betrayed him, defy his king to save her?

•••••••••••

REVIEW:

Rogue Knight begins with Emma of York hurrying home, only to discover some heavy-handed Norman Knights trying to take that which isn’t theirs, which has become all too commonplace in her beloved York. Crisis averted, this time, Emma makes her way home. She has family to see to. She has taken in twins, Finna and Ottar, whose parents were killed. She also has servants, Artur and Sigga who help her take care of the children and her home.

Sir Geoffroi is in the practice yard in Talisand when the king’s messenger rides in to see the Red Wolf. He can feel it’s not good news. When Geoffroi makes his way to the great hall, he is eventually able to see the Red Wolf, who is still recovering from an injury and not able to be up and around. King William has requested the Red Wolf and his knights head to York to try and quell any uprisings. However, since the Red Wolf is not able to go, he sends Sir Geoffroi in his stead along with his knights. As Geoffroi heads out, the words of the wise one and seer, Maugris, echo in his head. The wise one’s visions have never been wrong………

When Sir Geoffroi and his knights finally arrive in York, it doesn’t take him long to ascertain that things are not good. The people of York are angry and he fears things will only get worse. He spots a lovely woman and her hound headed into the bailey, and even though she scowls, he finds himself intrigued.

Later, as Emma dreams of death and destruction, she is awakened by yelling and discovers that the men from York are leading an uprising. When she discovers Ottar missing, she knows that he has sneaked out to be with the men leading the uprising. She also knows she has to find him and see him safe. Little did she know that decision would change the rest of her life. She had come to think that all of the Normans were barbarians, until she encounters Sir Geoffroi on her quest to find Ottar. When she does find him, Geoffroi, who recognizes her from the bailey, aids them and gets them safely back to their home. Almost unbelievably, Geoffroi comes to her aid several times throughout the havoc that has become York. With her father being one of the rebel leaders, can she trust Geoffroi with her secret? And, what of her heart? As war wages and secrets are revealed, can they find their way back to each other, even though Geoffroi would have to defy his king to do so? Well, my friends, you will just have to read it to find out. And what a wonderful read it is.

Regan Walker has once again written a wonderful story that pulls you in from the very beginning. I truly am almost at a loss for words. I feel that I repeat myself when I review one of her novels, but I just can’t help myself. The way she effortlessly weaves actual historical events and characters into her tales are inspiring. Emma of York is one of the most brave, compassionate and determined heroines that I’ve read in a very long time. The love she feels for her family, whether they are blood related or ones that she has taken into her home, leaps off of the page. Then, there is Sir Geoffroi. His internal struggles are many, and you feel every one of them. His sense of honor and loyalty is something everyone should aspire to. And, once again, Regan Walker’s world building is phenomenal. Whether we are in a field of wildflowers, trudging through the snow, witnessing a great battle or sitting by the hearth in Emma’s home, you absolutely feel like you are there. I can see it, I can smell it, I can hear it and I most definitely can feel it. The intrigue will pull you in and the beautifully developed romance will make your heart smile, but the depth with which she writes her characters will keep you coming back for more. If you’ve not read anything by Regan Walker, it is truly your loss. Well done, Regan Walker! Very, very, very well done!!

excerpt

Dear God.
She crossed herself and covered her mouth, fighting the urge to spew at the sight of so much blood and so many bodies strewn about the clearing, blood congealed on their clothing, their vacant eyes staring into space. Some of the blood had pooled on the ground to catch the rays of the sun. The metallic scent of it, carried by the wind, rose in her nostrils.

At her side, the hound whimpered.

So many.

Until the Normans had come, Yorkshire had been a place of gentle hills, forests and thatched cottages circling a glistening jewel of a city set between two winding rivers. A place of children’s voices at play, some of those voices now silenced forever, for among the bodies lying on the cold ground were mere boys, their corpses cast aside like broken playthings.

At the sound of heavy footfalls on the snow-crusted ground, she jerked her head around, her heart pounding in her chest.

A figure emerged from the trees, so close she could have touched him.

She cringed. A Norman.

A tall giant of a knight, his blood-splattered mail a dull gray in the weak winter sun, ripped off his silvered helm and expelled an oath as he surveyed the dozens of dead. The sword in his hand still dripped the blood of those he had slain. He was no youth this one, at least thirty. His fair appearance made her think of Lucifer, the fallen angel of light. A seasoned warrior of death who has taken many lives.
Had he killed people she knew? Her heart raced as fear rose in her chest.

Would she be next?

Guest postWhat’s in a name? Picking Character Names
by Regan Walker

Choosing my characters’ names is always a huge project. I do not choose names on a whim. I want the names to fit the characters and the story. For for my Medieval Warriors series, the names had to be right for the time period (11th century) and the setting (medieval York, England). They had to compliment the personality of the characters, too. Because there are Norman (French), English, Anglo-Scandinavian, Danish and Scottish characters, the names had to be historically accurate. Some of my characters were real figures.

Emma and Sir Geoffroi f

The French knights in both The Red Wolf’s Prize and my newest story, Rogue Knight, are all named for knights who actually accompanied William the Conqueror to England from Normandy in l066. (Yes, there is a list!) Geoffroi de Tournai, the hero in Rogue Knight, was one of them.

The Normans introduced the name “Geoffroi” to England where it became common among the nobility. It means “Peace of God.” I rather think it fits a knight who was so noble he rebelled against his king’s orders to do what was right.

The setting for my story is Yorkshire, which was Anglo-Scandinavian in culture at the time. Almost every street in the city of York had the Old Norse suffix “gata” meaning “street” and most of the personal names would have been Scandinavian, too. Hence I gave the characters from York, including my heroine, Scandinavian names, not Norman or Saxon names.

I chose to name the heroine “Emma” after Emma of Normandy, Queen Consort of England, Denmark, and Norway earlier in the century. She was also the mother of Edward the Confessor. Until 1043, Queen Emma was the richest woman in England with extensive lands in the East Midlands and Wessex. She died in 1052, a respected woman. My heroine was born in 1046 while the Queen Mother still lived.

Queen Emma and her sons being received by Duke Richard II of Normandy

Other characters in my story who populate York also have Scandinavian names: Magnus, Emma’s huge Irish wolfhound, named after a Norwegian king; Inga, Emma’s friend; and Ottar and Finna, the two nine-year-old twins Emma adopts when they are orphaned. You can see them all on my Pinterest board for the book:

1-Magnus

Emma’s father Maerleswein is a real historic figure, a rich Danish thegn who was Sheriff of Lincolnshire until he joined the rebellion against William I in 1068. I thought long and hard before using him as a main character, but he was such an enigmatic figure with little known of his family (no record of a wife or children, yet he had to have had them), it seemed like it could work. I held true to everything we do know about him.

As in all my stories, there are real historic figures joining the fictional characters. Those I don’t have to name, but I do have to learn as much about them as I can so portray them as they truly might have been. In Rogue Knight, you’ll find not only William, King of England, but King Swein of Denmark, King Malcolm of Scotland and various Normans: William Malet de Graville, Sheriff of Yorkshire, Richard FitzRichard, the castellan of York, Gilbert de Ghent, castellan of the second castle in York, William FitzOsbern, the Earl of Hereford and Robert, Count of Mortain, half-brother to King William. All lived at the time and were, I believe, as I have portrayed them.

When I’m dealing with so many characters, I always include a character list to help readers, though they tell me they don’t have any trouble keeping track. (That’s always good news!)

HARD AS STEEL (Hard Ink 4.5): 1001 Dark Nights by Laura Kaye-a review

Hard As Steel

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date September 22, 2015

After identifying her employer’s dangerous enemies, Jessica Jakes takes refuge at the compound of the Raven Riders Motorcycle Club. Fellow Hard Ink tattooist and Raven leader Ike Young promises to keep Jess safe for as long as it takes, which would be perfect if his close, personal, round-the-clock protection didn’t make it so hard to hide just how much she wants him—and always has.

Ike Young loved and lost a woman in trouble once before. The last thing he needs is alone time with the sexiest and feistiest woman he’s ever known, one he’s purposely kept at a distance for years. Now, Ike’s not sure he can keep his hands or his heart to himself—or that he even wants to anymore. And that means he has to do whatever it takes to hold on to Jess forever.

•••••••••••••

REVIEW: HARD AS STEEL is the latest novella in the multi-authored 1001 Dark Nights series, as well as Laura Kaye’s erotic, romantic HARD INK suspense series focusing on the men and women of Hard Ink Tattoo. This is tattoo artist Jessica Jakes, and Raven Riders MC leader/tattooist Ike Young. HARD AS STEEL is also the first storyline that introduces the characters for Laura Kaye’s new RAVEN RIDERS MC series-a 2016 spin off/cross over from her Hard Ink series.

Told from dual third person perspective HARD AS STEEL runs parallel to some of the events in Laura Kaye’s HARD TO LET GO (Hark Ink #4) that finds our heroine on the run when she is targeted by the same people out to destroy the ex Special Forces soldiers (of Hard Ink) trying to prove their innocence in an Afghanistan military operation that went horribly wrong. Jessica needs help when she inadvertently becomes entangled with one of the men out to destroy the soldiers, so our heroine calls Ike Young, her co-worker and best friend to help hide her until the danger passes. What ensues is a sexual relationship between Jessica and Ike wherein Ike begins to push Jessica away when ghosts from the past continue to control his present. Jessica and Ike’s relationship has been developing for a couple of instalments and HARD AS STEEL bridges the old with the new. The $ex scenes are erotic and intense. Ike and Jessica like to play a little rough in the bedroom.

HARD AS STEEL introduces a number of potential players in Laura Kaye’s 2016 RAVEN RIDERS MC series. The Raven Riders MC members have played a small role throughout the Hard Ink series, and with the release of HARD AS STEEL Laura Kaye will begin to focus on the bikers and the women they love. In HARD AS STEEL there is limited character cross over between the two series-any important information from the previous instalments is revealed where necessary. The premise is engaging and entertaining; the characters are colourful, charismatic and familiar; the romance is hot and spicy. I am looking forward to Laura Kaye’s new RAVEN RIDERS MC series-there is plenty of room for some dark and dangerous bikers who are a little rough around the edges.

Recent kidnapping victim Charlie Merritt has always been better with computers than people, so when he’s drawn into the SF team’s investigation of his army colonel father’s corruption, he’s surprised to find acceptance and friendship—especially since his father never accepted who Charlie was. Even more surprising is the heated tension Charlie feels with sexy, tattooed Jeremy, Charlie’s opposite in almost every way.

With tragedy and chaos all around them, temptation flashes hot, and Jeremy and Charlie can’t help but wonder why they’re trying so hard to be good.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date June 30, 2015

Five dishonored soldiers.
Former Special Forces.
One last mission.
These are the men of Hard Ink.

Beckett Murda hates to dwell on the past. But his investigation into the ambush that killed half his Special Forces team and ended his Army career gives him little choice. Just when his team learns how powerful their enemies are, hard-ass Beckett encounters the biggest complication yet—seductive, feisty Katherine Rixey.

A tough, stubborn prosecutor, Kat visits her brothers’ Hard Ink Tattoo following a bad break-up—and finds herself staring down the barrel of a stranger’s gun. Beckett is hard-bodied and sexy as hell, but he’s also the most infuriating man ever. Worse, Kat’s brothers are at war with criminals her office is investigating. When Kat joins the fight, she lands straight in Beckett’s sights—and his arms. Not to mention their enemies’ crosshairs.

Now Beckett and Kat must set aside their differences to work together, because the only thing sweeter than justice is finding love and never letting go.
