Description:
Things aren’t always as they appear…

New school. Cross-country move. Broken heart. If only these were Emma Guthrie’s worst problems. Instead, she must battle a trio of enemies–human and spectral–who may or may not have joined forces against her and everyone she loves. All while pretending to be over Cooper Beaumont, her ex-boyfriend and true love, to shield him from her arch-nemesis’s revenge.

Worse, when the fight escalates, Emma is tempted to use black magic, which will endanger her soul. As her enemies close in, join forces, and fight with new and dark magic she’s never seen before, Emma must harness the power within her to fulfill an ancient prophecy, defeat a centuries-old evil, save her family, and reclaim the only boy she’s ever loved.

Review:

I went over my previous review to remember where Allure had left off. Not only did I find my place, but I recouped the joy I experienced stepping into the world building of Lea Nolan. Emma, our intrepid heroine, squares off against dark magic from the onset and you’re fighting alongside her until the end, as in the very last word. Illusion is book 3 of the Hoodoo series and also its finale. I weep for its conclusion, but Lea Nolan leaves an enchanting, spellbinding impression on you.

As comfortable as Emma’s become with the practice of hoodoo (an apprentice root worker being mentored by the most powerful of the South Carolina Lowcountry), when confronted by evil, a menacing spirit plaguing Emma from the grave and 2 zealous rivals, it’s beyond tempting to fight fire with fire – even if it means going against what you swore never to wield. Will Emma withstand the allure of revenge? One can only be pushed so far before you’re crossing fundamental lines and absolving such behavior.

“…it’s considered justice work rather than a spell worked for revenge.”

Any way you look at it, it’s a caveat used to ease her conscience. Lucky for everyone involved, everyone good that is, Emma is surrounded by loving, engaging characters who help Emma stay to the light. Emma is young, just about to turn 15, but she displays such fortitude wrestling, and resisting, the passions of vengeance.

Aside from the diabolical maneuverings of malevolent forces, give it up to Ms. Nolan and the swoon-worthy love story *standing up, applauding*. I may have been a tad bit critical in my last review (I was/am a mom embarking on teenage daughter-dom – I’m not so irrational any more, lol).   Emma and Cooper should be indulging in the beauty of first love promises, but the enemies stalking and threatening Emma aren’t to be taken lightly; she’s willing to sacrifice her heart to save Cooper’s.

I want to stroke his face or rub his back, anything to take away the lingering pain…But I can’t, because that simple gesture would send the wrong signal and only encourage him.

Foreboding prophecy or not, Emma and Cooper are adorable and completely loyal to each other. In a moment of “weakness”, a hug to forget troubles, “I sink into him like a marshmallow in a vat of melted chocolate.” I felt it! They’re just so stinking cute! Illusion is a great piece of writing that I won’t soon forget.

I wouldn’t dare end this glowing review without addressing the care and respect Ms. Nolan gives to the hoodoo practice. I was riveted by the sounds and scents and solutions alike. You’re mesmerized by the incantations and seduced by the ingredients so fully, you’re committed to the execution of the ward/spell. And in a twist, a distasteful one to be sure, we’re subjected to shiver-inducing, gut-spewing. Emma fights the good fight, but that doesn’t prevent her nemesis from hitting below the belt. Well done, Ms. Nolan!

In a stunning finale, the interest never wanes. You navigate through subplots with equal enthusiasm and Ms. Nolan delivers each with triumphant aplomb. The tears shed were only due to my heart’s overflow. I adored this book and Emma. She embodies pure spirit and is a genuine hero for all to admire.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date October 5, 2015

Katy Evans returns with a sexy novella, the final installment of the unforgettable love story that began in MANWHORE.

What lies ahead for Chicago’s most envied couple, Malcolm Saint and Rachel Livingston?

Sparks flew between them in MANWHORE.

Separated by deception, the intensity and heat of their attraction turned up in MANWHORE +1.

Will Chicago’s wealthiest and most notorious player finally settle down, or will one woman never be enough?

Find out in MS. MANWHORE, the ultimate conclusion to their electric, breathtaking story.

**************

REVIEW: MS. MANWHORE is a novella and last installment in Katy Evans’ contemporary adult MANWHORE erotic romance series focusing on billionaire Malcolm Saint and the woman he loves Rachel Livingston. Ms. Manwhore should not be read as a stand alone as the storyline is the culmination of the relationship between Malcolm and Rachel that began as a lie and ends with a destination wedding on a paradise island.

Told for first person point of view (Rachel) Ms Manwhore follows Rachel as she prepares for her upcoming nuptials-her friends Wynn and Gina, her mother, the dress and Malcolm’s desire to give the woman he loves everything that she wants and needs. Rachel wants a small wedding without the over the top wedding hoopla, but her fiancé needs to give her a wedding she will never forget.

A majority of the storyline looks at Rachel and Malcolm’s sexual relationship. The imagery is detailed and graphic; Malcolm is a man who expresses his love with physical affection and $ex. When Rachel implements a ‘no sex until the wedding night’ policy, we watch as the sexual tension continues to build between our leading couple. The $ex scenes are erotic, provocative and hot.

There is the potential for a spin-off or continuation of the series (ala Katy’s REAL series stylization) focusing on Malcolm’s best friend Tahoe and Rachel’s bestie Gina. Something has occurred between this couple or at the very least Tahoe knows something that the reader does not.

As per Katy Evans’s style of writing there is some repetition. I found myself on the outside while the narrator (Rachel) told us about the events leading up to her wedding. I felt detached from the events as the narrator described what was happening and yet was reluctant to invite us into the action-I was on the outside looking in while the heroine relayed details.

If you are a fan of Katy Evans’ MANWHORE series then Ms.Manwhore is a sweet, sexy conclusion to Rachel and Malcolm’s love story. There are no anxious moments; no conflict and no threats from the outside (aside from Rachel’s ex-boss Victoria making an uninvited appearance). MS. MANWHORE is a short story that looks at two people as they prepare for their wedding without the worry of financial hardship.

Featuring all the characters you loved from Forever Changed and more, find out the life events that made Ben the man Sadie fell in love with. And then follow them into their New Forever.

Review:

A New Forever by Kimberley Hatch is the 2nd book in her Forever series.  I hadn’t read the first book in the series, but soon found it and caught up with the story. These can be read as stand alones, but I found the first book a big help (and the wonderful review that …… Jules Did )

This book is Ben’s story, and it tells us about Ben’s life before meeting Sadie. We read how a cruel twists of fate, shaped him into the man Sadie fell in love with. Ben loses his beloved parents at 17, with the whole world at his feet, he wanted to become a chef, and he had just been accepted into the the place of his choice. But before he enrolls his parents are killed in a freak accident at home.

Devastated, Ben wonders if he will ever recover, but with the help of his next door neighbours (close friends of the family) Ben slowly gains his feet. He feels blessed that he was given a second family. He loses many of his college friends as he slowly emerges from his grief, but he also makes a few good friends along the way in his new life. He gets a job in a restaurant as a busboy, and finds peace running in a gym.

Graduating from college he makes is way up from busboy to assistant chef, all the while keeping his dream of opening a restaurant alive in his heart. Another tragedy befalls Ben, and we wonder if he will pick himself up.

Ben finally moves into his own home and starts to live again, and here he meets his future. He sees a young woman being carried into her home by a man; even from the distance, he can see a thin, and lonely creature, someone wrapped up in so much pain, you can see it.

Ben wonders about the girl, but doesn’t really get a chance or moment to talk to her. But when he sees a chance a little while later, he seizes the moment to introduce himself. And from that moment Sadie and Ben become friends and eventually became the best of friends, they click and Ben sees her in his future. As this is from Ben’s point of view, we watch as his friendship turns into love, then heartbreak.

Does Ben get his happy ending? Is his happy ending with Sadie?

All the characters were a great read, and Leland (Sadie’s brother-in-law) was an absolute riot, I would love his story to be written. There were a lot of strong role models for Ben to follow and emulate. He had a strong sense of wrong and right, and a huge heart, that took a battering time and again. I enjoyed reading this book, and hope that you do too.

AGAINST THE ROPES (First to Fight #2) by Jeanette Murray- a review

Against the Ropes

Amazon.com / B&N / KOBO / The Book Depository

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date October 6, 2015

As a troubled teen, Gregory Higgs channeled his energy into boxing instead of breaking the law. The ring gave him purpose and something to strive for. So did the Marines. Combining the two seemed like a natural fit.

Another natural fit? Reagan Robilard, the sweet athlete liaison who keeps all the fighters out of trouble and manages their PR—a job that gets more challenging when someone digs up the truth about Greg’s not-so-shiny past after equipment is vandalized at the gym.

Even if it wasn’t her job, Reagan can’t let Greg take the fall. Because passion doesn’t pull any punches when it comes to matters of the heart

••••••••••••

REVIEW: AGAINST THE ROPES is the second instalment in Jeanette Murray’s contemporary, adult FIRST TO FIGHT military, romance series focusing on a group of Marine Corps boxers and the women they love. This is Marine/boxer Gregory Higgs, and PR representative Reagan Robilard’s storyline.

Told from several third person points of view AGAINST THE ROPES continues to focus on the destruction, and threats against the Marine boxing team with the attacks becoming more personal and aggressive. As the PR representative for the boxing team, it is Reagan’s job to spin the press but the continued attacks and threats against their own find Reagan falling behind when the attacks become personal and Greg Higgs is a target for both the press and the harassment. Several purposefully planted clues take aim at Greg and his ‘colourful’ past, and Reagan’s job is on the line when she is unable to keep a handle of the negative PR.

The relationship between Greg and Reagan is one of mutual attraction that finds our couple trying to keep secret their liaisons and personal life. While Reagan continues to push Greg for information about his earlier life, Reagan soon discovers that the man with whom she has fallen in love has a secret and dangerous past she knew nothing about. The $ex scenes are intimate and romantic; there are no erotic sexual situations and no graphic sexual language.

AGAINST THE ROPES is an ensemble storyline with several of the previous storyline characters playing supporting and secondary roles. Marianne and Brad (Below the Belt #1) have a strong presence throughout the story, as does Marine Graham who begins to take an interest in Kara-the team’s yoga instructor. The banter and camaraderie between the boxers is friendly; there is a definite support system in place.

The world building continues to focus on the preparation for the upcoming boxing matches, but begins to aggressively turn its’ attention to the investigation into who or what is responsible for the acts of violence and betrayal against the Marine boxing team. I do have an issue with the unreality as it pertains to a lack of security and closed circuit monitors on a Marine base with visible MPs who apparently are not doing their job. The situation is disconcerting under the circumstance and what could very well be terrorist threats at another time seems to be all but ignored by the people in charge-they are quick to blame a PR rep for the trouble and not actively looking into the who, what and why. The situation, as presented, is not believable as it pertains to the investigation and blame.

AGAINST THE ROPES is an entertaining storyline. The premise is engaging with colourful and charismatic characters. The romance is predictable but seductive; the happily ever after has yet to be revealed as the Marine Corps boxing team continues to struggle with threats from an unknown source. There are no active military scenes or sequences; the series focuses on the boxing team and the person(s) responsible for the attacks.

Description:
STORM CLOUDS ARE GATHERING, AND THEY WILL RAIN BLOOD.

The Ceruleans: mere mortals infused with power over life and death. Five books; one question: If the might of the heavens were in your hands, would you be sinner or saint?

Scarlett is living her happy-ever-after, back in the real world. Only the ‘happy’ part is proving problematic.

For starters, there’s the isolation. Being a Cerulean among humans is fraught with risk, so her time with people can only be fleeting. Which means being with Luke but not being with Luke.

Then there’s her Cerulean light, her power over life and death. Less awesome talent, as it turns out, and more overwhelming responsibility. And it comes with rules – rules that are increasingly difficult to obey.

But what’s really pushing Scarlett to the precipice is something much bigger than herself, than her life in the cove. A force to be reckoned with:

Blood.

When long-buried truths are exposed, will Scarlett keep her head above water – or will she drown in the blood-dimmed tide that is unleashed?

Review:

Scarlett Blake is Cerulean. That means she has the power to heal others within herself.  But with that power comes many rules and risks.   Scarlett has decided to leave Cerulea behind and return to her life with her boyfriend Luke.  But that choice does not come without consequences.  You see, it is unheard of for a Cerulean to have a relationship with a human.  Ceruleans; with or around humans for any length of time poses a risk.  But Scarlett is bound and determined to make it work.  Adjusting to a new way of life has been a struggle; Scarlett is isolated and sometimes alone at length.  But she takes on the task of spending time with Jude (fellow Cerulean) to learn how to use her light and heal those who are in need, without causing any harm to herself.  Scarlett has discovered that the results of using her light in the wrong way or on the wrong person can have devastating and real repercussions.

Scarlett’s relationship with her mother has improved. Her mother is forging forward and creating a life for herself, and finally seems quite happy.  But as all of this is coming about, Scarlett realizes that all of what she has believed about her childhood and life has been lies.  The man she has always believed to be her father, is not.  Which leads her on a journey to find out just who is?  And what will the consequences be when she finds out? Will it change Scarlett’s life as she knows it?  Will she be able to handle the truth of just who her father is?

I have absolutely “fallen” in love with this series.  Megan Tayte’s writing opens up an enchanted world of love, friendship, lies and turmoil.  Finding out who Scarlett’s real father is – was both heartbreaking and completely satisfying.  Knowing that her sister Sienna – now lost to The Fallen was not alone in her tragedy left me hopeful and with a complete sense of understanding. Especially when finding out the real story behind The Fallen.  All along I believed; just as Scarlett that The Fallen were outcasts because they had decided to use their healing power to take lives instead of heal them.  But that may not be the case.  The real reason behind what they have done may be something different entirely.   This adds a completely and totally unexpected twist to this journey.

Luke is completely loving and understanding in this book.  Making me care for him even more than previous books.  His patience with Scarlett and understanding knows no bounds.  Luke is completely committed to the relationship he shares with Scarlett.  And even though she is keeping things from him, I truly believe nothing will ever change the way he feels for her. The way that he brings love and even his own light to everyone around him makes him a pleasure to read.  He is completely selfless and unwavering.

I still continue to love the secondary characters of Cara (Luke’s sister) and Si.  They are both fun and always uplifting.  Jude proves to be more of a friend to Scarlett in this book, and I truly love how he is always there for Scarlett.  Michael has stepped forward in this book and I find him quite intriguing as a character.  I am hoping to find out more about him in the fifth book.  I even enjoyed Evangeline in this book, which I did not in previous books.  Evangeline reveals more to Scarlett and seems to be open to a new way of being Cerulean, which I hope for everyone’s sake is the case.   The ending of course was the ultimate cliff hanger – one of those –scream at the page ones.  Where you can not believe it has ended this way – but leaving you wanting more and more.  I will – although not easily – patiently wait for book five.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date October 6, 2015

My name is Madame X.
I’m the best at what I do.
And you’d do well to follow my rules…

Hired to transform the uncultured, inept sons of the wealthy and powerful into decisive, confident men, Madame X is a master of the art of control. With a single glance she can cut you down to nothing, or make you feel like a king.

But there is only one man who can claim her body—and her soul.

Undone time and again by his exquisite dominance, X craves and fears his desire in equal measure. And while she longs for a different path, X has never known anything or anyone else—until now.

•••••••••

REVIEW: MADAME X is the first instalment in Jasinda Wilder’s adult, contemporary Madame X erotic, dark romance series focusing on a woman known only as Madame X or X.

Told from first and second person points of view (Madame X) the storyline focuses on X- a woman who has no memory and no knowledge except for the previous six years, and in this, she relies on billionaire Caleb Indigo-a man whose control over Madame X is virtually master to a slave. Caleb is X’s rescuer, her confident, her protector, and the darkness to her light.

X is a teacher, of sorts, who instructs and coaches the ‘inept sons of the wealthy and powerful into decisive, confident men’. Caleb Indigo is Madame X’s boss and lover (and I use the term lover very lightly), and and the man who controls every aspect of X’s life including who and what she is. But there is a much darker side to Caleb Indigo-a man who hides his true identity from Madame X-but the man who has stolen her heart and her life. X is a beautiful woman who does not know who or what she is; where she came from; or the truth about her past. She is reliant on Caleb Indigo, and in this, she has sold her soul to the devil in exchange for protection-but who and what does X need protecting from?

MADAME X is a psychological study; almost Stockholm Syndrome in nature, the storyline focuses on a woman who knows nothing about the man who claims to be her protector and rescuer, and yet demands everything from the woman who has already suffered in the past. Caleb, for all intents and purposes, is X’s past, present and future. When another man begins to hunt for the truth, Madame X is torn between what she knows and the unknown.

Jasinda Wilder slowly reveals Caleb Indigo’s personality, his character and the truth. The aura of mystery surrounding the details of Madame X’s foray into Caleb’s life leads to many unanswered questions, and Caleb’s purpose and need to control X’s entire life is dangerous and dark. X has been conditioned to do Caleb’s bidding, and in this, she has a difficult time saying no and walking away. The emotional, psychological and physical control of our heroine is masterfully presented.

MADAME X is a story of intrigue, mystery and dark romance. The characters are passionate, intelligent and somewhat sad. There are some $ex scenes of questionable consent and the darker aspect of Caleb and X’s relationship is frightening and heartbreaking.

excerpt

A knock on the door, the silent swing of hinges, and then heat and hardness behind me, a faint but intoxicating hint of cologne, the creak of leather. Hands on my waist, lips at my neck. Breath on my skin.
I don’t dare tense, don’t dare suck in a sharp breath of fear. I don’t dare pull away.
Strong, hard, powerful hands twist me in place, and an index finger touches my chin, lifts my face, tilts my gaze. I cannot breathe, don’t dare, haven’t been given permission.
“You are lovelier than ever, X.” A deep, smooth, cultured voice, like the purr of a finely tuned engine.
“Thank you, Caleb.” My own voice is quiet, careful, my words chosen and precise.
“Scotch.” The command is a murmur, barely audible.
I know how to prepare it: a cut-crystal tumbler, a single ice cube, thick amber liquid an inch from the top. I offer the tumbler and wait, keep my eyes downcast, hands behind my back.
“You were too harsh on Jonathan.”
“I must respectfully disagree.”
“His father expects results.”
I bristle, and it does not go unnoticed. “Have I ever failed to produce results?”
“You sent him away after less than an hour.”
“He wasn’t ready. He needed to be shown his faults. He needs to understand how much he has to learn.”
“Perhaps you’re right.” Ice clinks, and I take the empty tumbler, set it aside, and force myself to remain in place, force myself to keep breathing and remind myself that I must obey. “I didn’t come here to discuss Jonathan Cartwright, however.”
“I suppose not.” I shouldn’t have said that. I regret it as soon as the words tumble free.
My wrist bones scrape together under a crushing grip. Hard dark eyes find mine, piercing and frightening. “You suppose not?”
I should beg forgiveness, but I know better. I lift my chin and meet those cold, cruel, intelligent dark eyes. “You know I will fulfill the contract. That’s all I meant.”
“No, that isn’t all you meant.” A hand passes through artfully messy black hair. “Tell me what you really meant, X.”
I swallow hard. “You’re here for what you always want when you visit me.”
“Which is?” A warm finger touches my breastbone, slides into the valley of my cleavage. “Tell me what I want.”
“Me.” I whisper it, so not even the walls can hear.
“All too true.” My skin burns where that strong finger with its manicured nail traces a cutting line up to my shoulder. “You test my patience, at times.”
I stand stock-still, not even breathing. Breath whispers across my neck, huffs hot on my nape, and fingers toy with the zipper of my dress.
“I know,” I say.
And then, just when I expect to feel the zipper slide down my spine, body heat recedes and that hot breath now laced with hints of scotch is gone, and a single word sears my soul:
“Strip.”
My tongue scrapes over dry lips, and my lungs constrict, protesting my inability to breathe. My hands tremble. I know this is expected of me, and I cannot, dare not resist, or protest. And . . . part of me doesn’t want to. But I wish . . . I wish for the freedom to choose what I want.
I have hesitated too long.
“X. I said . . . strip.” The zipper slides down to between my shoulder blades. “Show me your skin.”
Reaching behind my back, I lower the zipper to its nesting place at the base of my spine. Hard, insistent hands assist me in brushing the sleeves from my shoulders, down my arms, and then the dress is floating to the floor at my feet. That’s all the help I’ll get. I know from long experience that I must make a show of what comes next.
I turn my head, and see tanned skin and the perpetual two-day stubble on a refined, powerful jawline, sharp cheekbones, firm, thin lips, black eyes like voids, eyes that drip desire. My hair drapes over one shoulder. I lift one knee so my now-bare toes touch the gleaming teak, curl my shoulders in, let my gaze show my vulnerability. With a deep breath, I unhook my bra, let the garment fall away.
I reach for my underwear.
“No,” comes the purr, “leave them. Let me.”
I let my fingers graze my thighs, wait. My underwear slides down slowly, and where fingers touch, so too do lips, hot and damp, touching my skin, and I cannot flinch, cannot pull away or express how badly I want only to be alone, to even once have the right to want something else.
But I do not have that right.

Kit Devigny could have loved rock guitarist Noah St. John. Their friendship burned with the promise of intense passion and searing tenderness…until the night Noah deliberately shattered her heart.

It’s his saving grace, but it doesn’t silence the voices that keep him up at night. Chasing oblivion through endless one-night-stands, he earns a few hours’ sleep and his bad boy reputation.

When a media error sees Noah and Kit dubbed the new “it” couple, Kit discovers her chance at the role of a lifetime hinges on riding the media wave. Wanting—needing—to give Kit this, even if he can’t give her everything, Noah agrees to play the adoring boyfriend. Only the illusion is suddenly too real, too painful, too beautiful…and it may be too late for the redemption of Noah St. John.

REVIEW: ROCK REDEMPTION is the third full length installment in Nalini Singh’s contemporary, adult ROCK KISS romance series. This is “Schoolboy Choir’ rock guitarist Noah St.John, and actress Kit Devigny’s storyline. ROCK REDEMPTION can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Noah and Kit) ROCK REDEMPTION is a storyline about second chances at friendship and love. Noah’s personal life is spiraling out of control and there is nothing he wants more than to be loved and love but our hero (or lack of a better term) has a secret-a dark and heartbreaking past that controls his present, and in this, Noah sets about to destroy the woman who holds his heart. Noah is on a self-destructive path into the abyss; his man-whoring reputation precedes his friendship with Kit; the drinking, drugs and $ex barely appease the voices in his head. Noah is a man who doesn’t like to be touched; to kiss; or acknowledge the demons from his past.

Kit is an actress on the cusp of making it big but her love for Noah St. John finds our heroine walking away when Noah betrays both his friendship and love for Kit Devigny. The push and pull, and angst of Kit and Noah’s friendship borders on emotionally abusive, co-dependent, and obsession. Noah continues to push away the only woman he has ever loved in the hopes of keeping secret his past; Kit tries to keep her distance, letting go of the man with whom she has fallen in love, but she is unable to completely sever the ties that bind. ROCK REDEMPTION follows Kit and Noah as they struggle with their rekindling friendship and building love. Both Kit and Noah come from well to do families whose fame and fortune follow our leading couple wherever they go.

ROCK REDEMPTION is an emotional storyline both for the reader and the leading characters of the story. Kit and Noah’s relationship is akin to a psychological study in co-dependency while the world around them begins to close in and tighten the rope. There are moments of heartbreaking betrayal and family dysfunction, secret revelations and letting go of the past. The relationship between Noah and Kit is emotionally draining; the sexual attraction and anxiety is highly charged; BUT the romance is very, very slow to build. There are only one or two quick $ex scenes (late in the story) that leave the reader wanting more. ROCK REDEMPTION focuses on the rebuilding of a friendship before anything deeper can be explored. The lack of romance may be difficult for some readers especially with Noah’s numerous attempts to destroy his relationship with Kit. I think Nalini needs to write a novella that furthers Kit and Noah’s romance; the epilogue advances the storyline one year wherein we know nothing about the previous twelve months.

There is a secondary plot running through ROCK REDEMPTION that barely merits mentioning: Kit has a stalker whose identity and purpose seemingly come out of left field. For all intents and purposes, this particular scenario is more of a distraction; its’ purpose in the story is negligible and does nothing to affect the main storyline premise. It probably would have been better to remove this plot deviation entirely.

Molly and Fox (Rock Addiction #1) figure prominently throughout the storyline as our hero and heroine find emotional support from Rock Kiss’s introductory couple, as well as David and Thea (Rock Courtship 1.5), and Abe and his ex wife Sarah whose own rocky relationship may see a fresh restart. We are briefly introduced to Kit and Noah’s parents, as well as Kit’s friend Becca, and Terrence, a man vying for Kit’s attention.

ROCK REDEMPTION focuses on the struggles of a friendship destroyed by betrayal and mistrust. Noah is more of an anti-hero, and Kit’s emotional breakdowns are heartbreaking. There is no infidelity but Noah’s attempts to push Kit away involve other women, drinking and drugs. The characters are colorful, charismatic and honest; the romance is virtually non-existent due to the very slow rebuilding of Kit and Noah’s friendship. The sexual attraction and angst is palpable but our couple is slow to act on their growing feelings until a good portion of the storyline has elapsed. There are a number of scenes of self-reflection, and inner monologues with flashbacks that push the storyline forward (or back) revealing some of the backstory and history for our couple. The lack of romance between Kit and Noah may be a problem for many readers.

excerpt

Kit groaned at the sound of her phone. Reaching out blindly toward the nightstand, she hurled mental curses upon herself for forgetting to turn it off so she could catch some uninterrupted sleep before her four-a.m. makeup call.
It’d be fun and great for her career, her agent had said when recommending Kit take the superhero flick. Coming off two serious and emotionally wrenching projects, Kit had taken Harper’s advice and jumped on board the high-budget, high-octane venture. Unfortunately, Harper had forgotten to mention the four hours it would take to put her into the head-to-toe makeup required for the role. Daily.
“What?” she snarled into the phone without checking to see who it was.
“Hey, Katie.”
Every cell in her body snapped wide awake. Lifting her eyelids, she just stared at the ceiling through gritty eyes. Her heart thumped, her throat moving convulsively as she swallowed. She hated that he could still do this to her, hated it, but her visceral response to Noah wasn’t something she could stop. She knew because she’d tried for the past two years and three months.
“Noah,” she said flatly. “Do you know what time it is?”
“Two fifteen,” he answered.
Kit should’ve hung up. God, he’d hurt her. So much. But there was something in his voice that had her sitting up. “Are you drunk?” One thing she knew about Noah: no matter his bad-boy rep, he was never wasted. He might give a good indication of it, but look closely and those dark gray eyes were always sober.
“Probably.” A silence, followed by, “I just wanted to hear your voice. Sorry for waking you.”
“Wait,” she said when he would’ve hung up. “Where are you?”
“Some dive.” He took a deep breath, released it in a harsh exhale. “I’m sorry for being an asshole. I wanted to tell you that. I don’t want to go without saying that.”
“Noah,” she said, a horrible feeling in her stomach. “Where exactly are you?”
“The Blue Flamingo Inn off Hollywood Boulevard. Far, far, far off.” He laughed, and it held no humor. “It has a neon sign of a blue—surprise!—flamingo that’s flashing right through my window. Looks like someone stole the curtains.”
Having already grabbed her laptop, which she’d left beside the bed after answering some e-mails before sleep claimed her, she found the Blue Flamingo Inn. But Noah was already gone, having said, “I love your voice, Kit,” in an oddly raw tone before hanging up.
He didn’t pick up when she called back.
“Damn it! Damn it!” She shoved aside the blanket under which she’d been buried, having turned the AC to ice-cold as she usually did at night. Shivering, she tugged on a pair of jeans and an old sweatshirt over the panties and tank top in which she’d gone to sleep.
Pulling her black hair into a rough ponytail to keep it out of her eyes, she ran through the house, phone in one pocket, credit card and driver’s license in the other. In the kitchen, she grabbed her keys off the counter and shoved her feet into the tennis shoes by the door that led to the garage.
She was in her car and on the way to the motel three minutes after Noah had hung up, mouth dry and an ugliness in her gut. “Please be okay, please be okay, please be okay,” she kept saying, the mantra doing nothing to calm her down, but at least it kept her mind focused.
She wanted to call Molly and Fox, or the others in the band, but no one was currently in the city. Schoolboy Choir had completed the final show in the band’s hugely successful tour just over two weeks earlier. Day after that, they’d all gone their separate ways to recharge and regroup.
“Much as I love these guys,” David had said with a grin that reached the dark gold of his eyes, “I’ve been looking at their ugly mugs daily for months. We need to go blow off some steam separately before we start snarling at each other.”
At the time, Kit had nodded in understanding, having had that same experience while working on location for long periods. Tonight, however, she wished the others were all here, not scattered across the country, because something was very wrong with Noah.
“Noah doesn’t do drugs,” she told herself as she drove as fast as she dared, not wanting to risk getting pulled over and further delayed. “He isn’t the kind to—” She couldn’t say it, couldn’t even think of Noah ending his life. “No,” she said firmly, her hands white-knuckled on the steering wheel. “Noah isn’t like that.”

Hunter McCoy has good reason to keep his distance from the determined reporter. Tragedy has taught him to stick to things that don’t require his heart. But he can’t seem to resist the vulnerability he detects beneath Elizabeth’s tough demeanor.

But when tragedy strikes the ranch again and Hunter shuts her out, Elizabeth will have to prove to Hunter that having somebody love you can heal all wounds…

Review:

When Somebody Loves You by Shirley Jump is the 1st book in her new The Southern Belle Bookclub series. This was a very nice romance of an unlikely couple that looked like it was destined to fail, as neither of them were interested in any kind of relationship.

Elizabeth (Lizzie) Palmer, our heroine, has lived all her life wanting to change her life and do what she always dreamed of doing. She uproots herself, takes a job as a journalist, and leaves New Jersey to go to a small town in Georgia, to interview and write up an article on an reclusive quarter horse breeder.

Hunter McCoy is our hero, and from the start he isn’t very friendly to Elizabeth, when she arrives for the prearranged interview for her magazine. Hunter has closed himself off emotionally, after the tragic death a few years ago of his Fiancee to a tragic accident that he blames himself. Hunter is also over protective of his sister, preventing her from joining him on the ranch to help train and breed horses.

Though Hunter is difficult, Lizzie finds him very attractive, and does all she can to keep her feelings private. She is openly welcomed by Hunter’s aunt and sister, as well as the ladies of the Southern Belle Bookclub. For the first time in her life, she feels comfortable, and happy in this environment, especially with new found friends.

This was a fun and sweet story, as Hunter slowly falls for Lizzie, allowing his heart to melt. Lizzie already knows she has fallen for Hunter, who begins to act nice, and even romantically. They both have their own issues; Hunter learning to cope with the tragedy, and learning to let go; Lizzie being afraid to give herself a chance in a new town, with friends, and a possible love. Will Hunter and Lizzie find a way to come together? You will need to read this book to find out.

Shirley Jump created some very likeable characters, and I look forward to seeing many of them get their own stories as the Southern Belle Bookclub continues.
