ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date November 19, 2015

Billionaire Luke Devereaux gets what he wants and what he wants right now is to bring down the shady organization threatening his family. Teaming up with the FBI is his only option–even if that option comes in the sultry Evelyn Price, the ice-princess who’s all business.

Refusing to be distracted by the sexy, rich playboy, Evelyn forces herself to stay focused on the case, gearing up for the criminal takedown of her entire career. As the enemy closes in with Evelyn as its next target, it’s up to Luke to keep them out of danger. The more they work to protect each other, and fight for control, the harder it is to resist their undeniable attraction.

And the one thing Evelyn has learned from working with him is that Luke Devereaux gets what he wants.

•••••••••

REVIEW: TESTING THE BOSS is the sixth installment in Mallory Crowe’s contemporary, adult BILLIONAIRES IN THE CITY romantic, suspense series. This is CEO billionaire Luke Devereaux, and FBI agent Evelyn Price’s storyline. Although TESTING THE BOSS can be read as a stand alone I would recommend reading the series in order as the threats and plots against the family continue to build throughout each storyline. Each of the storylines is interconnected with the characters crossing over between installments.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Luke and Evelyn) TESTING THE BOSS is a revealing storyline that begins to expose the people behind the threats against the Devereaux family. The group known as the Thirteen Stars, a white-collar criminal ring, has been trying to get Luke Devereaux on their side. With the assistance of the FBI, and the undercover presence of Evelyn Price, Luke tries to ferret out information about the high powered businesses and the people involved. What ensues is the collapse of the undercover operation and several attempts on Luke and Evelyn’s lives as someone is always one step ahead of Luke and Evelyn’s plans. Evelyn has her suspicions; Luke is oblivious but hints at a possible suspect; this reader was spot on with the guilty party(s) involved.

The initial relationship between Luke and Evelyn is caustic and bitter, but the sexual tension runs high throughout the story. Evelyn is an FBI agent who wants nothing to do with privileged rich boys with too much time on their hands who want to play cops and robbers. Already recovering from a gunshot wound, Evelyn finds herself in New York ‘babysitting’ Luke Devereaux while he tries to infiltrate the Thirteen Stars. Luke, on the other hand, takes an immediate liking to the acerbic FBI agent, and tries to break through Evelyn’s barriers and walled heart. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate, although our heroine believes she has crossed the line between her job and her heart.

The secondary characters include several of the previous storyline couples and characters: Emma Devareaux and Jace Lance: Michael Devereaux and Lori Briggs; and Luke’s assistant Cali who keeps her finger on the pulse of everything in Luke’s personal and business life.

The world building continues to focus on the threats against the Devereaux family and their billion dollar enterprise DevX that provides cyber protection software to some of the largest defense contractors in the USA. The group known as the Thirteen Stars continues to pursue the Devereaux family and with Luke’s storyline some of the missing information as to the who, what and why is slowly revealed. This particular ARC of the series began in book four (Trusting the Boss). TESTING THE BOSS ends on a bit of a cliffhanger.

Mallory Crowe’s BILLIONAIRES IN THE CITY is a series focusing on white-collar crime, intrigue and high stakes revenge. There are moments of mystery and suspense, wrapped in a building romance between two people whose lives have crossed paths time and again. The premise is entertaining, and full of twist and turns with plenty of drama, betrayal and emotion; the characters are likeable and well developed- strong willed and independent thinkers; the romance is a build up to a profession of love. Mallory Crowe’s BILLIONAIRES IN THE CITY is a high stakes, who-dun-it, where revenge is the ultimate sin.

excerpt

Luke shook his head. “Come on. Screw that. Let’s do some real training.”
He approached her and she was fascinated by the ripple of his muscles as he moved. “Real training?” she murmured.
“Like you wouldn’t want a chance to kick my ass?” He stopped just a foot away.
Her eyes widened as she finally got a hold of her libido and realized what he was saying. “You want to fight me?” she asked incredulously.
“No. I want you to teach me how you fight. I’ve had a bit of training and would like to see how I stack up next to a trained cop.”
“Agent,” she corrected. “And you know I can wipe the floor with you, right?”
He shrugged. “Maybe. But I am bigger. And probably stronger.”
“But not smarter.” She smirked. Seriously, if he thought he could take her, he was out of his mind. Even with a leg that wasn’t up to par, she had been training to take down guys bigger and stronger than her from before she even entered the academy.
“I’ve gotten into one or two brawls, Evelyn. And I played football in the South. That shit gets intense.”
She let out a laugh. “High school football! I’ve taken down cartel leaders, murderers, and gangsters. Not exactly the same thing. I can take you in a heartbeat.”
He raised a brow. “Then prove it.”
A surge of adrenaline shot through Evelyn as she stared down Luke. “Fine. Move the weight bench and try not to break your head open when I knock you on your ass.”
He smiled in a way that told her that he wasn’t going to go down easy and she held her ground while he moved the bench. Probably the first time he actually did what she told him to. Once it was moved, they at least had a little room to move around. The ground wasn’t padded like she was used to while training, but a few bruises would do Luke some good. But she would give him one consolation. Holding onto her weight rack for support, she flipped off her tennis shoes and Luke followed suit.
The tension swirled in the air and she could tell Luke was probably just as excited about this as she was.
Once everything was moved out of the way, Luke stood a few feet away from her and she stood with her feet shoulder width apart, as they eyed each other cautiously. “How do we do this?” He shifted his weight.
She smiled confidently at him. “Come at me.”
A flash of uncertainty crossed his face. “What if I hurt you?”
She snorted. “You’re not going to hurt me.”
“You sound pretty sure of that.”
“I’m one hundred percent sure of that,” she warned. “If anyone is in danger, it’s you. Now, are you going to come at me or are you going to get on the treadmill to do a normal workout?”
He growled low in his throat at her threat and she knew that she’d pushed him enough. She tensed and narrowed her eyes as she looked for any sign that he was about to come at her.
And it wasn’t long before he lunged.

Q & A

Tell us three behind the scenes facts about TESTING THE BOSS.

1 – Evelyn is named after the author Evelyn Adams. Without her help and support, I probably would not be a published author now.
2 – The cover model on TESTING is the same guy who’s on TOUCHING. I just loved him so much and, since the characters are brothers who look alike, I made it work.
3 – I was recently in New York City for a few days (previously I’d only been in the city for a few hours at a time). So this is the first book where I could use real life experience to describe the city.

What’s the last book you read and loved?

One of my author friends, Cali MacKay, just published the first part of this really cool project called FORBIDDEN about a woman who turns to a mysterious artist on a private island to keep her safe from her deranged ex. Except the mysterious man is actually a set of twins and she starts falling for both without realizing it. Cali’s been telling me all about the story as she was writing it and I couldn’t WAIT to get it and read for myself.
Out of all your heroes, who do you want to keep for yourself?

I think Simon from TEASING THE BOSS might be my favorite. Something about a sexy, redhead nerd alpha. Who also likes dogs…

Your next book TAMING THE BOSS will be the final book in the Billionaires in the City series. What are some of the things going through your mind at seeing this series end?

I’m really more excited than anything. Partially because I don’t feel like the series is ending, I feel like I’m opening a new chapter. I can’t give too many details yet, but the next series will be a little different in tone, but will still have the strong characters and bite of humor and suspense that the BITC series had. So I’m 100% thrilled to bring this new world to my readers.

What’s next for Mallory Crowe?

The last book in the Billionaire’s in the City series, TAMING THE BOSS, is coming out January and that shows the Devereaux’s dedicated assistant, Cali, going to northern Maine to drag back the black sheep of the family. Needless to say, he doesn’t make things easy for her in the best way possible.

About the author

Mallory CroweMallory Crowe has lived in Michigan her whole life and has been in love with romance ever since she’d skip to the end of every novel, just to make sure the hero and heroine survived and ended up together. She lives with her husband and three dogs. When she’s not writing, she’s spending too much time in front of the TV, hiking, or working with various animal rescues.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date November 17, 2015

Mirror, mirror … who’s the fairest of them all?

I still cringe when I hear that line. A fairy tale that had girls pretending they were the fairest, the most beautiful, and the most entitled. A fairy tale most couldn’t grow out of turned my haunted childhood memories into a living nightmare. Girls who grew up believing that pile of garbage became the meanest of all ‘mean girls.’

And those mean girls were right – it was a line meant for all the beautiful people in the world – and I knew the answer would never be me.

The women with long legs, flat stomachs, and perfect chests.

The type of women Kane Masters gravitated toward.

Well, that’s definitely not Willow Tate.

No. That will never be me.

Because I’m completely imperfect.

And … I hate myself.

I have no idea what Kane could possibly see in someone like me when he could have them.

••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: PERFECTLY IMPERFECT is the latest stand alone novel by Harper Sloan.

Told from dual first person points of view (Willow and Kane) PERFECTLY IMPERFECT is an emotional and heartbreaking storyline that will resonate with many readers who have issues of low self-esteem and negative body image. Our heroine Willow Tate is not perfect but she is perfect in the eyes of Hollywood heartthrob Kane Masters. Willow comes from a dysfunctional family wherein she has become the brunt of her stepfather, half sister’s and ex-husbands brutal and emotionally humiliating verbal assaults. An accidental meeting, not once but twice, with the sexy actor/director Kane Masters throws Willow’s world upside down when he offers her everything that he is, and all that she could want.

PERFECTLY IMPERFECT is a Cinderella-esque fairytale storyline about a woman who is barely surviving in a world of faux and plastic perfection as she works for her stepfather’s modeling agency. Willow’s self-esteem and body image is so low that all of the negativity in her life has become a self-fulfilling prophecy wherein she becomes a target for all that is wrong in the world. The devastating death of her mother; her step-father’s hatred and half sister’s vitriol attacks; a husband who despises the very air from which she breathes; and Willow’s subsequent emotional eating disorder have left our heroine on the verge of a divorce, and the brink of a personal breakdown. Enter Kane Masters, the man whose own perfect image hides a secret that if revealed would destroy his career and that of someone else. Kane is a man whose need for Willow defies explanation- from the first time he saw her, Kane has become a man possessed in the hopes of something more.

Willow is every woman who has ever hated herself; hated her looks, hated her body; hated the thought of facing another day surrounded by the perfection of every day life. In the beginning, our heroine is a doormat for her family’s attacks; she is a punching bag for their verbal and emotional abuse such that at times the attacks were overwhelming and unbelievable. Willow is at her lowest, and her self-deprecating insecurity knows no limits as it pertains to her own personal value and low self-worth as she traverses a world of black and white, with no color or expectations of future success. It will take the love of a man to show Willow that her true value does not come from the acceptance of other people, but from the acceptance of herself.

PERFECTLY IMPERFECT’s straddles a fine line with its’ veiled message to women everywhere. Although beauty is in the eye of the beholder, what does it say when a woman must find her own self worth from the acceptance and attention of a beautiful man. PERFECTLY IMPERFECT is a story of fiction meant to entertain, and I doubt that the author meant anything other than to tell a story about overcoming issues of self-esteem to be accepted and loved by others and one’s self, but the fact that Willow’s slow climb out of the abyss is a direct result of unconditional love from the perfect man is definitely a fairytale for the 21st century. The premise is engaging, emotional and intense; the characters are colorful and heartbreaking; the romance is a slow build to a happily ever after.

excerpt

“Are you nervous right now?”
I nod.
“Tell me why.” His demand, steady and calm, gives me the courage I need to tell him. To open a vein and bleed my insecurities.
“I’m not perfect,” I whisper.
“And neither am I, Willow. I don’t want perfect. What so many see as perfect, to me, is fake. Perfect isn’t achievable naturally. No one, and I mean no one, is perfect.”
I’m shaking my head before he’s even done speaking, but one long finger comes up and presses against my lips before I can speak.
“No, let me finish. There isn’t beauty in perfection. It’s as fake as the image the word projects. Beauty is found in imperfection, Willow, because to admit you’re not perfect means you’re admitting you’re not whole and absolute. When I think of myself, I see someone willing to admit he’s as far from complete as it gets because, in order to get to that perfection, I need to find the other part of me who will make my life better. To take all the faults I have and fill them, and only then will I be there. You see, the way I see it, the only way to become perfect is to find that perfectly imperfect person who brings it out of you.”
When he stops, I swear I might have stopped breathing. How am I supposed to respond to that?
“Do you trust me?” he asks, his voice strong and sure.
“Yes, Kane. Nerves or not, I do.”
“Then let me show you what I see when I look at you.”
He brings his hands up, framing my face once again in a way I’m quickly becoming addicted to the feeling of. His warm eyes implore, begging me without words to let him continue. I do not intend to stop him, regardless of the butterflies currently taking over my system. I’m all in.

Missing in the Glades by Lena Diaz – a Review

Missing in the Glades by Lena Diaz – a Review

Missing in the gladesAmazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / BAM / The Book Depository

Description:
He was looking for a missing person. What he found was a beautiful stranger.

Looking for a fresh start, detective Jake Young headed south on a case that could help launch his PI business. He knew no amount of work would make him forget his tortured past, but maybe Faye Star could help. Caught up in Jake’s missing persons case, the distracting Faye was hiding a secret he was begging to find out. Expertly guiding him through the swamps, Jake’s job grew more complicated when someone started taking shots at the free-spirited beauty. As much as she protested she could take care of herself, Jake stepped in, refusing to admit how desperately he needed someone to save. Especially since he’d never be able to save himself…

Review:

I saw an episode of Burn Notice once where someone was lost in the Everglades and they were worried about panthers mauling the person. Panthers, as in, that’s not outside the norm of animals found in that area. Wowzers. Lena Diaz allots a huge amount of respect to this “unpredictable, dangerous, land-that-time-forgot section” of Florida. That’s almost incomprehensible to this city girl, but it lends itself perfectly to a missing persons case and a unique love story befitting the town of Mystic Glades. Please welcome back the wonderful Lena Diaz and her first book in the Marshland Justice series, Missing in the Glades.

Jake Young is trying his hand at PI work. Police work wasn’t boring per se, but he partnered up with his friend to expand his horizons. What a first case! Just when Jake catches a break and finds the abandoned vehicle of the victim, a shot rings out too close for comfort. Gorgeous or not, Jake’s going after the gypsy-looking woman with the amazing aim!

Faye Star is a free spirit with a degree in biology and killer survival skills to rival any local’s. When she sees Jake lurking through the ‘Glades, we quickly deduce that she’s worried about being associated with the case.

All she knew for sure was that a private investigator was trying to find Calvin. But he hadn’t mentioned anything about finding her. If someone from Tuscaloosa had hired him, they’d have wanted both her and Calvin, wouldn’t they? But Jake hadn’t tried to grab her…or kill her. Which meant he didn’t know about her connection with Calvin…”

Not only is Jake not trying to kill Faye, he’s killing himself trying to keep his hands, especially his heart, away from her! The attraction is a distraction, of the best kind. Faye may say she’s willing to collaborate on the investigation, but it’s, HE’s, too tempting to ignore. Jake can lose himself in Faye if he’d let his heart dictate, but his gut is telling him not to indulge…and his reasons aren’t entirely noble, either.

He looked down at her fingers working his belt loose, and that brief moment of lost contact between them was just enough for the haze of lust to allow his brain to switch back on. What was he doing? This was crazy, wrong on so many levels. She trusted him, and he was betraying her with every breath he took. He couldn’t cross this one last line. Once she found out the truth about him, she’d hate him forever.

Can withholding information, delivering bold-faced lies, and general deceit (with a healthy helping of subterfuge) be forgiven…all in the name of love? Neither Faye nor Jake can point fingers here. The plot deepens as thick as the marshland when new characters are introduced and seem beyond eager to find (silence?) Calvin. Is Calvin “an idiot tourist with no common sense and a lousy sense of direction” or is he a man with valuable information? Any just why does Faye care so much about what happens to him?!

Oh, this was good! Lena Diaz deftly threads a needle of intrigue throughout the story and subplots. We gain necessary insight, but delight in the unexpected outcomes! Jake and Faye surprised themselves by how quickly they clicked; their chemistry both compatible and steamy. Separating romantic emotions from duty was challenging Jake and Faye gravitated so naturally towards each other, but Ms. Diaz writes it with a fine tension; just with that bit of edge to keep you engaged.

In less than 250 pages, Missing in the Glades is fast-paced and meant to be concise. Do not confuse those features as a sign of mediocrity. I read a complete, fleshed out story unearthing secrets amidst an exotic backdrop. The wow factor is all Lena Diaz.

Designed For Murder by Avery Flynn – a Review

Designed For Murder by Avery Flynn – a Review

Designed for MurderAmazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / BAM

Description:
Some fashion statements can kill…

Mika Ito combines her two favorite things in life—textile design and live-action role-playing (LARP)—by creating costumes for her fellow Magic Battledome gamers. Lately, someone’s been assaulting LARPers and stealing their costumes. Concerned for the safety of her friends, Mika hires Maltese Security…only to discover that the lead investigator is the super-hot stranger she just hooked up with.

Carlos Castillo is all too familiar with Magic Battledome. A former legend in role-playing circles, he was all about gaming, until things went very, very wrong for him. Now he’s forced to return to the game undercover—as Mika’s boyfriend—to find some answers. Only playing “boyfriend” with his gorgeous one-night stand is more temptation than a guy can withstand…

Someone wants the costumes enough to kill for them. And when it comes to murder, nothing is what it seems…

Review:

Designed for Murder begins with two different sets of friends having drinks at a local watering hole. Carlos is there with his Maltese Security coworkers to blow off a little steam. Mika and her friends are having a girls’ night out. When one of Carlos’ coworkers dares him to go over and ask one of the girls to dance, he has no idea how much things are about to change. He approaches Mika and she points out there is no dance floor, to which he replies “I’m willing to risk it”…………. They hit it off and decide to go back to his apartment. However, after a lust filled night, Mika awakens to discover that she’s late for a very important meeting and skips out, much to Carlos’ disdain…..But, he knows it’s for the best. After his last relationship ended horribly (UNDERSTATEMENT!), he doesn’t think he has it in him to start another.

Mika runs into Maltese Security late and a little disheveled. As she tells them that someone is attacking members of her court and taking, of all things, their costumes. The police don’t seem to be too concerned, but Mika knows something is up, and she’s afraid someone will be seriously injured. As she explains about LARPing, they tell her they have the perfect guy for this case. Enter, yep, you guessed it, Carlos. You can just imagine how shocked he and Mika both are to see each other so soon. When Carlos protests his participation, he is told by his boss that he will take the job.

As Carlos begins to question Mika about what exactly is going on, he soon figures that things aren’t as they appear. The two of them start tracking down information that leads to startling revelations and soon discover that their attraction and chemistry is undeniable. Will Carlos be able to finally put the ghosts of his past to rest in order to keep Mika safe? Well, you’ll just have to read to find out.

Designed for Murder is a fun, fast paced read. It’s also a little different. I mean LARPing??!! LOL!! This was a first for me, but I loved the story. Mika and Carlos are great together. She is a little spitfire that he’s not quite sure about at first. And, she knows that he’s holding back for some reason with her. As they both work out their issues, the romance that blossoms is great to read. If you’re looking for a fun, sexy and a little different read, you can’t go wrong with Designed for Murder. Well done, Avery Flynn!

RECKLESS RENDEZVOUS (Reckless Beat 4.5) by Eden Summers

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date November 16, 2015

One kiss sends Leah Gorman’s life into a tailspin.

After years sacrificing herself for Reckless Beat, Leah needs to catch her breath. She has to escape the constant chaos and revive her frayed nerves. There’s no better place than Vegas and the memory of a heavily-inked man with talented hands to make her heart palpitate for reasons other than stress. Logan is exactly what she needs right now… Or is he? Her pleasure comes at a price, and she will be left to question every aspect of her life and what her future holds.

This novella starts straight after the events of Sultry Groove (Reckless Beat 4) and will lead you into the final book of the Reckless Beat series.

••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: RECKLESS RENDEZVOUS is a novella length story that focuses on Leah Gorman-Reckless Beat’s manager-and a woman who has lost her identity and her life to the business and the band. When an ill-timed kiss from Reckless Beat guitarist Ryan sends Leah into a tale-spin, our heroine heads to Vegas where she goes in search of herself and a one night stand to make her forget about the man back home.

Told from third person perspective (Leah) RECKLESS RENDEZVOUS follows Leah as she endeavors to forget about the kiss, the man, and the heartbreaking loneliness while searching for someone or something in Las Vegas. Enter sexy, tattoo and body modification artist Logan-the man who will offer up one night of passion with no strings attached. But Leah’s strings are tied to the band, and one man in particular.

RECKLESS RENDEZVOUS is a very quick read; an emotional short story about one woman’s search for herself and her future that doesn’t include the man with whom she had fallen in love. The premise is impassioned; the characters are heartbreaking and real; the happily ever after has yet to come. Eden Summers will tease your Reckless Beat journey with a taste of what is to come.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date May 8, 2015

He wants the world and the admiration of everyone in it.

Sean Taiden, the inconspicuous drummer of Reckless Beat, is sick of living in the shadows of his bandmates’ success. He’ll do anything to gain the recognition he deserves. Even if it means dancing in a music video to the Reckless track that drives a knife into his broken heart whenever he hears it. The saving grace is the tempting choreographer who may be the one person able to distract him from the agony his life has become.

All she wants is the peace that comes with solitude.

Melody Jenkins knows all about fame. She knows enough to determine she doesn’t want a part of it anymore. After quitting her professional dance career, she set up a quiet studio and focused on starting a new beginning away from prying eyes. Until a sexy drummer strides into her life, making her crave something she can’t have while also pushing her to expose secrets she can’t bear to reveal.

Conflicting aspirations and one inextinguishable passion.

She needs to hide from the world she once owned. He wants to rise to the top, proving to himself and his friends that he’s always been the heartbeat of the band. Caught between what they need and what they want, Melody and Sean have to decide which is more important—their individual plans for the future or their feelings for one another.

••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: SULTRY GROOVE is the fourth installment in Eden Summers’s contemporary, adult RECKLESS BEAT erotic, romance series focusing on the rock band Reckless Beat. This is drummer Sean Taiden, and choreographer Melody Jenkins’s storyline. SULTRY GROOVE can be read as a stand alone without too much difficulty although I recommend reading the series in order as each storyline builds upon the events of the previous book.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Sean and Melody) SULTRY GROOVE focuses on Melody and Sean as they rehearse for an upcoming video for the band’s latest release Fighting Against Attraction. Sean isn’t is a good place –emotionally or mentally-and watching his band mates find love and their happily ever after increases the unhappiness in the drummer’s life. Sean wants to be noticed; he is sick of being ignored by the fans and the paparazzi; and living in the shadows isn’t doing anything for his rock and roll ego. When the chance comes to star in the band’s latest video, Sean jumps at the chance only to come face to face with the most beautiful but damaged woman he has ever met. Hoping to use Melody as a distraction to everything that has gone wrong in his life, Sean begins a sexual seduction of the choreographer only to realize that Melody is the woman he wants in his life.

Melody is hiding a secret; a secret from her friends, family and everyone she holds close including the man with whom she is falling love. And it is that secret that keeps Melody from the life that she once loved, and from telling Sean the truth about why she no longer dances in the spotlight or in front of a crowd. I will add that Melody’s issues of self-esteem and her need to constantly pull back and away, were both heartbreaking and frustrating.

The sexual attraction between Melody and Sean is immediate but Melody’s first introduction to Sean finds our hero drunk and disorderly as the celebration of Mason and Sidney’s engagement. Sean has always had a thing for Sidney, and tries to use Melody as an outlet for his pent-up need to distract himself from his best friend’s happiness and future life. What ensues is a growing love between Melody and Sean, until both realize that each other is keeping secret something dark in their pasts. The $ex scenes are erotic, intense and provocative.

The world building continues to focus on the rock and roll lifestyle of Reckless Beat: the tours, the music, their personal lives, and the potential breakdown of each member of the band. The wall between Sean, Mason and Sidney continues to grow, and with it a much larger wall between Melody and Sean.

SULTRY GROOVE is a Beauty and the Beast storyline where Beast comes in the most unexpected presence. Both Melody and Sean’s egos and self esteem are tightly wound to their talent and career choices, and with it we watch as Melody’s life follows a different path, while Sean gets lost in the darkened shadows of his fellow musicians.

Eden Summers writes an emotional storyline about two broken souls who find one another when needed the most. The premise is intoxicating-you can feel the artistry of the movements in the dance. The characters are engaging, charismatic and animated-their jealousy and rivalries are not unexpected in a world fixated on beauty and perfection. The romance is a slow seduction of body and mind.

REVIEW: DARE TO SEDUCE is the eight installment and latest novella in Carly Phillips contemporary adult DARE TO LOVE erotic romance series focusing on the Dare cousins and siblings. This is Lucy Dare –one of the New York Dare cousins, and professional chef and restaurateur Max Savage’s storyline. DARE TO SEDUCE can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. We were first introduced to the Dare cousins in Dare To Surrender (Dare to Love #3)-the July 2014 installment in the multi-authored 1001 Dark Nights novella series- and Dare to Submit (Dare to Love #4).

Told from dual third person perspectives (Lucy and Max) DARE TO SEDUCE is a friends to lovers/second chance storyline that focuses on the building relationship between Lucy and Max. Max has always loved Lucy, but growing up neighbors and best friends with Lucy’s brothers there was always an understood hands-off policy between Lucy and Max. But years passed, lives changed, losses and other relationships carried forward until present day where Lucy and Max found themselves together at Decklan Dare’s engagement party to Amanda Collins (Dare to Love #4), wherein Lucy’s current boyfriend found himself on the outside looking in when Max and Lucy rekindled their long fought urges and need for one another. What ensues is the building relationship between Lucy and Max, and Lucy’s need to push Max away at every available opportunity.

DARE TO SEDUCE is an erotic storyline; a tale about two people who have loved one another but never took a chance on a happily ever after. Lucy had already lost too many people in her life, and wasn’t willing to risk her heart for fear of losing the only man she has ever loved. Max is a man whose childhood left our hero longing for a relationship with a woman he could love but Lucy kept Max at arm’s length as their relationship began to grow. Saying that, I felt the love between Lucy and Max was more one-sided –Lucy’s inability to let go of the past pushed everyone (including family and friends) to the periphery of her relationship needs. The $ex scenes are erotic and intense. Max likes to dominate both in and out of the bedroom.

The secondary and supporting characters include Lucy’s brothers and their respective mates: Gabe and Isabelle; Decklan and Amanda. We are also introduced to Max’s new business partner and executive chef Sebastian Del Toro; as well as Max’s parents who want to rekindle their relationship with their only son.

DARE TO SEDUCE is a quick and enjoyable read that takes the reader into the world of the ‘other’ Dare family: the cousins to the original Dare to Love series family; and the Dare’s who are members of an elite BDSM club and the Club Eden hotel and nightclub chain. The premise is entertaining; the characters have a history together therefore the build up to love is quick but not necessarily easy; the happily ever after fast forwards the storyline one year wherein Lucy and Max are in need of an extended vacation and some time away. Carly Phillips DARE TO LOVE series is a delight-no matter which side of the family you’re on !!

Dare To Seduce teaser

excerpt

Max Savage glanced across the lush green lawn of Gabriel and Isabelle Dare’s Bedford, New York, home, his gaze focused on the sexy brunette he couldn’t get out of his head. Lucy Dare, dressed in a conservative pants suit, her luxurious dark hair pulled into a bun, stood beside her date, a Hollywood director who was a douchebag of the first order.
The last time Max had seen Lucy, she’d been her wild and free self. Then she’d hooked up with that guy and she’d changed. And not in a good way. He wanted fun, sexy Lucy back.
“How badly do you want to punch that guy’s teeth in?”
“So badly,” Max muttered, then glanced over, realizing the question came from Lucy’s brother, Decklan Dare.
Max shook his head and changed his answer, because it would do no good to let his best friend know he was obsessing over the guy’s little sister. He’d kept it to himself for years, partially as an excuse to deny what he really wanted, but regardless, this wasn’t the right time to bring up the issue.
“Who do you mean?” Max asked.
Decklan rolled his eyes. “Oh, come on. I know you hate that Spielberg wannabe as much as we do.”
“Can’t say he’d be my first choice for your sister.”
“That’s rich considering it’s your fault she’s with him to begin with.” Decklan eyed Max with distinct annoyance in his gaze.
“How the hell do you figure that?” Max asked.
Decklan’s older brother, Gabe, joined them, and from the look on his face, he’d clearly caught the tail end of the conversation.
“Face it, Savage. We know you have a thing for Lucy,” Gabe said.
Just how the brothers had gleaned that bit of knowledge was beyond Max. Nobody had a better poker face than him.
Decklan merely nodded in agreement.
“You didn’t take your chance last time she was in town, and now she’s with that asshole,” Gabe added, angling his head toward where his sister stood with Lucas Kellan.
“Well, fuck.” Max wasn’t about to deny what had clearly been more obvious than he’d intended.
Both Dare brothers narrowed their gazes on him, waiting for an explanation.
“What? I didn’t think you’d approve, and I wasn’t about to mess up years’ worth of friendship if you didn’t.” He was sticking to the tried-and-true excuse he’d told himself for years. In reality, Max had his reasons for staying away from
Lucy for so long and for fucking up more than just his life in the process. But they were his, and he wouldn’t be sharing them.
“The only way you’d compromise friendships would be if you used or hurt my sister. If your intentions are honorable, I have no issue,” said Gabe, the man who’d raised Lucy after their parents died in a car accident.
Max glanced at Decklan. They both knew Max’s recent past. He’d married young, lost his wife, Cindy, in a car accident, and had a subsequent lack of serious relationships since. What Decklan didn’t know was the guilt Max harbored over the emotions he hadn’t been able to give his wife, due to the feelings he’d always had for Lucy. Hell, he’d married Cindy because he didn’t have those intense feelings, and everyone had paid a price.
Max shifted uncomfortably and cleared his throat and glanced at Decklan, who, like Gabe, was extremely protective of his sister. “You too? You’re okay with this?” he asked.
His best friend shrugged. “Well, you’re an asshole but you’re our asshole.” He slapped Max on the back, his expression sobering. “Look, Cindy died four years ago, and you haven’t been with anyone seriously since.”
Neither one of them mentioned Max’s penchant for sex clubs on the weekends. It had been a way to fill the emptiness inside him, nothing more.
“But Gabe is right,” Decklan said. “I see how you look at Lucy. You should do something about it if your intentions are solid.”
They finally were. For years Max had denied his need for Lucy and the emotional bond he knew they would share if they took things to the next level. Fear had driven him. Now Max was finally ready to go after the woman he’d always wanted.
“Just don’t blow it or we will have an issue,” Decklan cheerfully added.
Max didn’t need to be told twice. He made his way across the lawn and veered between guests, coming up to where Lucy and her date stood by the bar.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date November 17, 2015

The daughter of a schizophrenic, Dr. Jane Evans prioritizes order, control, and—above all—her work in a psychiatric research lab. When an attempted kidnapping threatens to derail the project she’s on, her boss hires a bodyguard. He’s everything Jane is not, and if she can survive, she may even learn to like the difference.

Eric Sorensen owes Jane a debt he can’t possibly repay. Without her tutoring, he would not have made it through college, would not have the life he does. But none of his memories of college Jane prepare him for adult Jane. When she suddenly disappears, he follows her trail to a secret lab in a cartel-controlled Mexican jungle. Rescue seems impossible but Eric’s not the type to give up, even if it means trading his own life for hers.

•••••••••••••

REVIEW: MIND GAMES is the second installment in Laura K. Curtis’s contemporary, adult HARP SECURITY romantic suspense series focusing on the elite security team at HARP Security. This is security specialist Eric Sorensen, and scientist/researcher Dr. Jane Evans’s storyline. MIND GAMES can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Eric and Jane) MIND GAMES focuses on the hunt for the people trying to kidnap Dr. Jane Evans. As the deadline approaches to reveal the latest drug for schizophrenia and mental disorders, threats and kidnapping attempts against Jane, as the lead researcher on Project Calm, begin to escalate. Enter Eric Sorensen-HARP security specialist-and a former acquaintance and college mate of Jane Evans. What ensues is a storyline that finds Jane abducted, imprisoned and forced to work on a designer drug for the Mexican cartels.

The romance aspect of the storyline finds Jane as the aggressor. She is a woman who wants something from Eric, but Eric isn’t open to a one-night stand, and his ‘job’ places everyone he loves in danger. The $ex scenes are limited without the use of graphic sexual imagery but I thought something was missing between Eric and Jane: perhaps it was the fact that our couple were separated for a good portion of the storyline.

MIND GAMES is a storyline with a very large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters including several of Eric’s fellow security specialists-all former military personnel-as well as HARP Security owner Nash Harper. We are also introduced to a number of Jane’s fellow researchers, including Dani-a young, twenty five year old woman who has gone missing in the days preceding Jane’s abduction; and Clive Handler-the man in charge of Project Calm. The requisite evil comes in many, many forms as Jane finds herself in the middle of the Mexican jungle running from drug lords, guerilla super-soldiers, and a human trafficking ring.

The world building focuses on several plot lines wherein our heroine attempts to uncover the truth, run for her life, and save the lives of several other victims of the Mexican cartels. A good portion of the storyline finds Eric and his comrades searching for Jane; and Jane stalling for time hoping for someone to come to her rescue. Jane’s questioning of the guards finds our heroine retrieving insider information that may come in handy to take down the people involved. There is a bit of a twist with the reveal but it wasn’t difficult to deduce the person behind the attempts on Jane’s life.

MIND GAMES is an action-packed story of suspense with a little science fiction via the development of a super soldier through drugs and hypnotherapy. The premise is entertaining and intriguing, if somewhat over the top; the characters are numerous, colorful and animated; the romance is a slow build to a happily ever after. I will add that I miss Mac Brody from book one ECHOES-there was a definite negative vibe between Nash and Mac, and I was hoping for some information or resolution to their tepid relationship.

Description:
The youngest of the three Knowles siblings, Quinn has in her blood the love of the land and its beautiful creatures. Raising enough money to build an animal sanctuary is a dream Quinn lives every day—while fending off her family’s well-intentioned matchmaking schemes. Though harboring secret fears about intimacy, Quinn soon realizes she cannot fight her growing attraction to a man who has suddenly entered her life.

Scarred by his months in Afghanistan and the violence he witnessed there through his camera lens, photojournalist Ethan Saunders throws himself into hard ranching work as a prescription for healing. But falling for Quinn has given him the one thing he thought he’d lost forever: hope. Ethan discovers that Quinn, like the innocent animals she rescues, is shy, and afraid of entrusting her heart to a man. Passion soon awakens Ethan’s strength, and his tender seduction may be just what Quinn needs to believe in herself—and in his love.

Review:

Once Touched by Laura Moore is the third in her Silver Creek series. I read and loved the second one, still haven’t gotten round to reading the first book.

Quinn is the youngest of three siblings, and is the only girl, and being brought up on a ranch, Quinn learned to be tough, but for all her toughness she is totally clueless when it comes to men.

She brings rescued animals back to the ranch to heal, and usually keeps them, she has a bad mouthed bird, a dog, a cat, several horses, and a small herd of goats. She dreams of opening her own haven for animals one day.

She is told by the men she dates, how pretty she is, but she won’t let them too close, she is scared, and after a few attempts with a few of those men, she decides that sex is overrated, or there must be something wrong with her.

Then her parents ask Quinn to pick up an old family friend who is coming to recover from a severe injury, from the airport. She remembers Ethan, who was always at the ranch when she was a little girl and he would spend hours helping her to ride her favourite pony. But her childhood memories are soon turned to dust.  The man Quinn knew, wasn’t there, and in his place was a broken man, a man so immersed in his anger and pain that she didn’t recognize him, sparks fly and not in a positive way.

Ethan is a photojournalist, and has just come back from taking photos in Afghanistan. After suffering from a bomb blast, all Ethan wants to do is recover and get on with life, and unsure if he will ever have the confidence to pick up a camera again, Ethan just wants to live day to day.

But little by little Quinn helps heal this scarred and damaged man. And in return he shows Quinn what a real relationship has to offer.  They might just start out as friends with benefits, but it soon quickly turns into more.

But misunderstandings and mistrust drive a huge wedge between Quinn and Ethan, can they restore each other’s faith, and will their love survive?  I love her interaction with her brothers Wade and Reid. Those books are one and two in the trilogy you get a nice glimpse of them too. Once Touched is another wonderful story by Laura Moore.

Interview beige 2

TRC: Hi Laura and welcome back to The Reading Café.

LM: Hi! (Waving across cyberspace). Thanks so much for having me here today at the Reading Café. Love hanging out with you all.

TRC: We would like to start with some background information. For those who do not know about you, would you please tell us something about your self?

Laura Moore 6LM: I currently live in the great tiny state of Rhode Island. I’ve been a romance writer for a while now–Once Touched is my tenth title–but I’ve also worked as a teacher and museum educator. I’m married to a wonderful man and we have two great kids. I love animals and I used to ride competitively. I pretty much always manage to feature a four-legged creature in my stories. In Once Touched, I hit the critter jackpot. My heroine Quinn Knowles not only lives on a cattle and sheep ranch, she raises dairy goats and rescues animals.

TRC: Who or what influenced your career in writing?

LM: I read my first romance when I was twelve and was hooked. I’d say the early authors I read–Nora Roberts; Catherine Coulter; Judith McNaught, and Jude Deveraux–inspired me. When I sat down to write my first novel, Ride A Dark Horse, my goal was to write as memorably as they. As time has gone by, the list of authors who inspire me has only grown. There are such wonderful and uplifting stories being told by today’s romance authors.

Once TouchedTRC: ONCE TOUCHED is the third installment in your Silver Creek cowboy romance series. Would you please tell us something about the premise?

LM: My Silver Creek series takes place in northern California, on a sprawling guest ranch owned by the Knowles family. Just so you know, all three books can be read as stand-alones. Once Touched is Quinn Knowles’s story. Quinn seems to have it all: She has a great job caring for the livestock at Silver Creek Ranch and rescuing animals she finds in need. She has wonderful friends and a supportive family. But no one’s life is perfect, not even Quinn’s. She’s guarding a secret fear, a deep-seated anxiety. She needs someone she can trust to help her overcome her problem. And that someone can’t be from her circle of friends or family.

Photojournalist Ethan Saunders comes to Silver Creek Ranch a wounded man. Haunted by his experience in Afghanistan, Ethan doesn’t want to deal with people. Most of all, he doesn’t want to feel. But Quinn Knowles sneaks past his defenses and, in spite of his determination to shut out the world, he finds himself caring for her.

For her part, Quinn can’t resist trying to heal both the visible and invisible wounds Ethan carries. As the two fall for each other, they have to find the strength to overcome the fears that bind them or risk losing the love they’ve found.

TRC: What challenges or difficulties (logistics, facts) have you encountered writing and publishing this story and series?

LM: What a great question! One of the challenges I had to face was incredibly prosaic: the weather. I’ve been writing this series as California faces an epic drought–kind of a bummer when you’re writing a romance, but an essential topic when your protagonists are tied to the land as my ranching family is. I had to find ways to talk about the impact the drought is having on the environment and people’s lives without letting it overwhelm the story.

In Once Touched I also address our military involvement in Afghanistan. My hero, Ethan Saunders is a photojournalist who was embedded with an army unit near Kandahar. I wanted to be sure I got the pertinent details right and treated the subject of our armed forces fighting overseas with the respect and sensitivity it deserves.

TRC: Are any of the characters or stories based in reality or a combination of reality and fiction?

LM: Kind of, sort of. Sometimes when I’m in between novels, I’ll read an article about a person and that will serve as a springboard for the hero or heroine in my next book. That happened when I read a profile of Sylvia Earle, a totally cool marine biologist. She was the starting point for my heroine Lily Banyon in Night Swimming.

With Once Touched, my characters evolved from a bunch of different things I’ve become interested in recently: rescuing and training animals as service animals; ways to help our returning soldiers, and sustainable farming and ranching.

TRC: How do you keep the plot(s) unpredictable without sacrificing content and believability?

LM: Honestly, that’s always a challenge for me. I write small town contemporary romances and my patron saint is Jane Austen (along with St. Francis). My hope is that even without the pyrotechnics of romantic suspense or paranormals, I’m writing stories that grab both the heart and mind.

TRC: There is a fine line between romance, erotic, and erotica in many of today’s popular contemporary fiction. What do you believe accounts for the differences between the sub-genres in today’s romantic stories?

LM: We’re living in a post Fifty Shades of Grey era. I’ve always written sexy romances but since E.L. James came onto the scene, I’ve noticed that the heat level in a lot of contemporaries has gone from simmering to sizzling. I’m not sure whether my sex scenes have as well (I’m too busy reading other authors to read my own books). But just as there was a pendulum swing towards the scorching end in contemporaries, I think–hope–that we’ve returned to an equilibrium. Readers of contemporary romances are looking for all types of stories, some hot, verging on erotic, some not.

TRC: Do you believe the cover image plays a deciding factor for many readers in the process of selecting a book or new series to read?

silver creek series

LM: Yes–and thank you, Ballantine Books, for the beautiful covers you gave to Once Touched and all my titles in the Silver Creek series! There are so many books competing for readers’ attention. A strong and visually arresting cover is the first step in getting a reader to pick a book off the shelf or, increasingly, to click on the thumbnail image. And as we all know, it’s that tiny thumbnail image that is becoming ever more important so it’s vital to have a designer who understands how to make a cover work. The rest is up to me and my words.

TRC: When writing a story line, do the characters direct the writing or do you direct the characters?

LM: My characters are always there, reading over my shoulder and then tapping it and saying, “Nope, I don’t think so…”

TRC: The mark of a good writer is to pull the reader into the storyline so that they experience the emotions along with the characters. What do you believe a writer must do to make this happen? Where do you believe writers fail in this endeavor?

LM: I think both questions can be answered by judging the strength and believability of the characters in the story. They have to be well drawn, with strengths and weaknesses, motivations and insecurities with which the reader can identify and relate. My ambition as a writer is to get better at telling stories with every book but that doesn’t mean it gets any easier. Sometimes we writers get lucky and a character comes along who has everything: the flaws, the scars, the charisma and the strength, sometimes we have to work really hard to find those attributes in our other characters.

TRC: Do you listen to music while writing? If so, does the style of music influence the storyline direction? Characters?

LM: I’m a music addict. I’m listening to Brandi Carlisle’s ‘Dreams’ as I type. A lot of my writer friends can’t write to music or have to listen to purely instrumental compositions. Me, I like a good beat, a soaring voice, and great lyrics. I think it’s a holdover from my days as a barn rat…I need music in my background. I don’t know whether my musical preferences affect the storyline per se (though I did sneak in a Marvin Gaye reference in Once Touched because it was just so perfect) but my characters often listen to the same music I like. My one exception was Gen Monaghan in In Your Eyes. She mixed classical music and operas into her playlist far more than me. In our house, it’s my husband who’s the opera fiend.

TRC: What three things would you like to accomplish in the next five years?

LM:
1. Write my new Beach Lane series
2. Travel to some cities and countries I’ve never visited. I have quite a bucket list. For instance I’ve never been to Australia or New Zealand. I’d also like to visit China and Japan.
3. Sort through the closets and remove all the clutter my husband, children, and I have accumulated over the years. That might take a decade.

TRC: What do you believe is the biggest misconception people have about authors?

LM: That we’re good at talking about our books and our writing process!

TRC: What is something that few, if any people, know about you?

LM: I may love rock and roll but I have the lousiest singing voice in the world. Sometimes when I’m writing and a favorite song of mine comes on I’ll get up and dance and sing. Our cat will run away, leaving just the dog who will look very worried but determined to save me.

TRC: On what are you currently working?

LM: I’ve just started a new trilogy–The Beach Lane Series–which is set in the Hamptons, the wealthy hamlets on Long Island, New York’s east end. The first book is entitled Making Waves and it’s about a woman named Dakota Hayes who runs a personal concierge service. I’ve never written a character like Dakota before, and I’m having a blast. And my hero, venture capitalist Max Carr, is one of those tortured alpha males you just have to love… Making Waves will be out in 2016.

TRC: What do you have planned for 2016?

LM: Celebrate the release of Making Waves with you all, I hope! And get cracking on book two in the series, Summer Fling. This writing business is a lot like the shampoo instructions: Wash, rinse, repeat.

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

LM: First, thank you so much for having me here today and letting me talk about Quinn and Ethan and Once Touched.

I’d also like to give away a copy of Once Tempted Book One in the Silver Creek series to a reader who comments below. I’ll leave you with a question to get the ball rolling.
