Marked in Flesh
The Others series – Book #4
by Anne Bishop
Release Date: March 8, 2016

Marked in FleshAmazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / BAM / The Book Depository

Description:
For centuries, the Others and humans have lived side by side in uneasy peace. But when humankind oversteps its bounds, the Others will have to decide how much humanity they’re willing to tolerate—both within themselves and within their community…

Since the Others allied themselves with the cassandra sangue, the fragile yet powerful human blood prophets who were being exploited by their own kind, the delicate dynamic between humans and Others changed. Some, like Simon Wolfgard, wolf shifter and leader of the Lakeside Courtyard, and blood prophet Meg Corbyn, see the new, closer companionship as beneficial—both personally and practically.

But not everyone is convinced. A group of radical humans is seeking to usurp land through a series of violent attacks on the Others. What they don’t realize is that there are older and more dangerous forces than shifters and vampires protecting the land that belongs to the Others—and those forces are willing to do whatever is necessary to protect what is theirs…

Review:

Marked in Flesh by Anne Bishop is the 4th book in her fantastic The Others series. I have said this before; I am a huge fan of Anne Bishop, having loved all of her other series; whatever she writes, she is a master storyteller. In Marked in Flesh, Anne just continues to wow us with another fascinating story that had us holding our breaths in the final half of the ultra exciting pulse pounding finish.

The Others is a story about the terra indigene (non humans, such as wolves, crows, vampires, elementals, grizzlies, etc) who control most of the world, and the humans, both good and bad who live in lands that the Others allow them to live on. Meg is our heroine of this series; she is human, but a valuable blood prophet, who has the ability of seeing the future when she cuts herself. The Others have come to care very much for Meg, and will go to all lengths to protect her from the evil that threatens them all.

In Marked in Flesh, the group who call themselves Humans First and Last, have escalated their foolish threats against the Others, including humans and/or businesses that support the terra indigene. They kill livestock, and threaten the lives of many of the wolves. The Elders, whom we learn more about, as even The Others fear them, decide it is time to reclaim their land and do what they learned from what the humans did.

Simon Wolfgard, who is the leader of The Others, prepares everyone for what is coming. He warns other territories that have been working with the good humans, and the cassandra sangue (young blood prophets that were saved, and whom Meg tries to help). In Lakeside, and in a few other territories, The Others try to bring in humans who have worked with them to protect them from the expected fallout. It was interesting to watch the preparation of a possible destruction of the world as they know it, with the humans and others bringing in supplies to last them for some time; which included books, food, medicine, normal things for their human friends, such as toilet paper. Lol Meg begins to try and find out ways for her and the other blood prophets to be able to see the prophecy without cutting.

Meg has become an important part of the others, especially to Simon, who is slowly finding himself not seeing life without our Meg. I look forward to the time when Simon and Meg open themselves to a romance. I love the great characters Bishop has created for this series, Meg, Simon, Sam, Tess, Vlad, Nathan, Merri, Skippy, Monty, just to name a few, and there are so many.

Marked in Flesh gives us a look at the original others (The Elders), who are different from the shape shifters, and more lethal. When the time comes as we race to the finish, the excitement and danger is breathtaking. The power of the Elders, and the Elementals (Ocean, Fire, Water, Air, Earth, etc,), is so powerfully written by Bishop, as we watch what unfolds around us.

This was an exciting and intense race to the climax, with many deaths that will change this world going forward. I loved the humor that Anne added to alleviate some of the tension, with the wolves howling to let the Elders know that they are there and not to harm those with them. Even Meg did her Arroooo! The ending was very well done, with some sad moments. We are left waiting impatiently for the next book to see where Anne Bishop will take us. Once again, Anne Bishop has done a wonderful job continuing this wonderful urban fantasy series, which is not to be missed.

If you have not read this series, I suggest you do so. This is not a standalone; you must start with the first book, as it is a continuing storyline.

At The Edge (Alpha Crew Part 1) by Laura Griffin – a Review

Description:
Dive into Part One of this heart-pounding romantic suspense story, which continues in Edge of Surrender: Alpha Crew Part Two!

When Emma Wright’s government plane goes down over the Philippine jungle, she’s forced to survive alone until an ultra-elite SEAL team goes in after her. As the leader of Alpha Crew, Ryan Owen is no stranger to challenges, but he’s never tackled anything quite like this sexy, smart, and resourceful woman. The mission is to get Emma home safely, but danger is everywhere, and Ryan’s unexpected desire for Emma could be a deadly distraction.

Back home in California, Ryan’s mission is over—but Emma’s has just begun. She knows her plane crash was no accident, and she’s determined to uncover the truth about what happened—even if her quest for answers puts her at risk. Torn between duty and desire, Ryan searches for a way win Emma’s heart while protecting her from an invisible enemy who wants her dead.

Review:

At the Edge by Laura Griffin is Part 1 of her new Alpha Crew series. This is a novella that will lead the way to the next novella, Part 2, which comes later this month. Not sure the reason why this was done, as it could have easily been added to Alpha Crew Part 2, unless this is sort of a prequel to a new full series. However, that being said, I did enjoy this story, meeting our heroes Emma and Ryan.

The government plane Emma was on crashes in the Philippine jungle, leaving her as the only survivor. Emma, who is injured, tries to find someplace to hide for safety. Enter Ryan, a member of a Seal/Alpha crew looking for the downed plane, with an ambassador’s wife on board. Ryan rescues Emma, and his team must find a way to get her to safety. There is more to why Ryan and his team were close to the site of the plane crash, but that will be for us to learn in Part 2. For now, as they trek on dangerous land, both Emma and Ryan find themselves attracted to each other.

After the rescue, and when she is fully recovered, Emma searches for Ryan, as she cannot get him off her mind. Emma is also suspicious of how the plane went down. Ryan wants her to walk away as his life is dangerous and secret; but when he sees she is being followed, he knows he has to protect her. What follows is a romance that is very steamy, despite Ryan’s determination to not get involved. Emma hows how much she wants Ryan, and he cannot resist her. But Emma’s insistence to find out the truth will put her life more into danger, and then she decides to do things on her own. Ryan will get help from his team to find Emma before the enemy finds her. Now sit back and wait for Part 2.

Laura Griffin is an excellent writer, as I enjoy her Tracers series.   She has created a great couple, as I really loved the chemistry between Emma and Ryan. This was an exciting action filled story that is a quick read, and sexy. Just wish they made one novel out of this opener.

Description:
When Lady Esme Byron happens upon a gorgeous naked man sleeping beside a secluded country lake, she can’t resist the impulse to sketch him. But when her highly improper drawing is mistakenly revealed at a party, she finds her once-pristine reputation in tatters.

Gabriel, Lord Northcote, may be a notorious rakehell, but he is still stunned to find himself accused of despoiling a duke’s sister—especially since he’s never set eyes on her. When Esme’s six irate brothers demand a hurried trip down the aisle, he has no choice but to comply. He thinks he can forget about his inconvenient bride but Esme Byron is no ordinary woman and Gabriel is about to learn just how unforgettable she can be.

Review:

It seems I’ve stumbled upon book #2 of The Rakes of Cavendish Square series. If Happily Bedded Bliss is any indication of unmitigated delight, I cannot wait to retrace the path to the introductory novel and capture all the magic! Thank you, book gods, for introducing me to Tracy Anne Warren. Happily Bedded Bliss was beautiful beginning to end; it developed and bloomed into a gorgeous story.

Though of like minds regarding marriage, avoid it unless absolutely necessary, Gabriel and Esme will have to endure just that “penalty” for indulging in impropriety. Esme’s stunning sketch of an unbeknownst, naked Gabriel has obligated him to propose holy matrimony in Regency England (her older brothers might have beaten down his door?) Oh, joy. Can Gabriel, a notorious rakehell, inspire Esme to embrace their predicament? Will musings such as, “love was a delusion, a kind of temporary insanity that polluted the brain and the bloodstream, ravaging its unwitting victims like a disease until the fever eventually broke” be just those words? Trepidation is far too mild a description of the upcoming nuptials, but who has it worse?!

Forced into marriage as a result of her folly, are Gabriel and Esme to make a real go of it? They’re vastly different people. She, an animal lover (the proportions a veritable menagerie); he, a lover of women? What else is on his viscount acumen? Is there a happy medium to be found? Should Esme run back home, nestle in with the family and brave the wave of gossip set to drown her or accept the consequence/relationship as fearlessly as Gabriel — he had yet to leave the country after all?

And suddenly she could not do it.

Something about him called to her, like one of her wounded beasts, and she could not turn him away. She needed his name and protection in order to keep from being cast out of Society. But strangely, she realized, he just might need her even more.

As with any couple forced into such a corner, you pray for patience while tempers are tempered, and, well, moods managed. Ms. Warren lushly described the push and pull of Esme’s inexperience to the prodding, tempting ways of Gabriel’s seduction. My body caught fire at such pleasure, at such sensations! Though the companionship was amiable, one cross word or misunderstanding and the mood was suddenly ruined. Make mention of falling in love and things got downright heart-breaky! It’s my word – it means big, fat, sloppy tears that coincide with the heaviest of hearts lodged in your throat. ;( Ms. Warren writes a passionate, fraught-with-frustration, why’d-you-go-and-say-that-you-dolt, equally swoon-worthy story that enchants and gives hope for the unexpected miracles of life.

An assortment of wonderful, secondary characters expands the humor, partakes in the irreverence, and even makes your skin crawl with enmity (ok, only 1 familial was repugnant, but its effect was long-suffering). I thoroughly reveled in the camaraderie within Esme’s immense family. The punches hurled at Gabriel, both physical and mental, were riotous yet purposeful. What else are big brothers for?! Savvy advice and biting words are exchanged with balance and truly compliment their rougher natures.

What an outstanding story! I was bursting from various emotions — all signs of a must-read!

The hardened rake and the tenderhearted innocent shackled together for life because of a single imprudent act.

Some people have all the luck! 😉

Interview

Hi Tracy Anne. Thank you for taking the time today to answer some questions for our members at The Reading Café. We are always looking forward to reading about the author behind the book.

Tracy:  Thank you so much for the warm welcome. I’m so pleased to be here with all the wonderful members of The Reading Café.

TRC: Would you please tell us something about yourself?

Tracy:   All right. I am the youngest of four siblings and have two sisters and one brother; my oldest brother and sister are fraternal twins. I grew up in a small Ohio town, graduated from The Ohio State University with honors and left home – and Ohio – after college. My mother is a widow and she lives in Virginia. To my great sorrow, my dad passed away a couple years before I first got published. I have two nieces, a great-niece, a great-nephew and an assortment of cousins.

TRC:  Did you always have an interest in writing? When and how did you first start writing?

Tracy:  From my youngest days, I’ve been a storyteller, making up tales to amuse myself and, occasionally, my friends. It wasn’t until high school, though, that I realized I had an affinity for writing. I took a creative writing class and from then on I wanted to be an author.

I completed my first manuscript right after I graduated from high school—a time-travel romance that I now realize was ahead of its time but still a very amateur effort. I sent it in to a major NY publisher, got a form rejection letter and was so devastated that I quit writing.

Regardless of that decision, the stories I had inside still wanted to be told. So, many years later—I’d rather not say exactly how many <g>—I decided to try again. That time I was determined I would get published. I wrote and wrote and wrote some more, collecting more rejections along the way, but refusing to give up. Not counting that first sad attempt at 17, The Husband Trap, my first published novel, was my fourth manuscript and my first completed historical romance manuscript.

As to why I choose to write romance–well, I love romantic stories. They are the ones that always spring to life inside my imagination, begging to be told. Like most authors, I am an avid reader. Around age 12, I began to read romance novels. I adored them, and still do for that matter. So, in some ways, you might say romance writing chose me, since I love telling stories that end with a happily ever after. What could be more fun than that?

TRC:  Happily Bedded Bliss was released last week, which is the 2nd book in your The Rakes of Cavendish Square series. Can you please tell us the premise of this series and how many books are you planning?

Tracy:   The Rakes of Cavendish Square novels, that are actually a trilogy, are a continuation of my earlier Byrons of Braebourne series. The novels are about the three youngest Byrons––Leo, Lawrence and Esme. The rakes in question are twin brothers, Leo and Lawrence, and their less-than-proper neighbor, Gabriel, Lord Northcote. They all revel in the delights that come with seeking out pleasure regardless of their tarnished reputations. The books let the reader experience the highs and lows that each of the youngest Byrons experience on the road to real love and happiness.

Happily Bedded BlissTRC:  Can you please give us a brief description of Happily Bedded Bliss.

Tracy:  Happily Bedded Bliss is the youngest Byron, Lady Esme’s – and her brothers’ rakehell neighbor, Gabriel, Lord Northcote’s – story. Throughout the original Byrons of Braebourne series, Esme was always drawing something. Once I decided to write a book for her, I immediately wondered what would happen if she drew the wrong thing – in this case, a gorgeous, naked man, who she just happens to find sleeping next to a secluded country lake.

That gorgeous, naked man is none other than Gabriel, Lord Northcote. Once her naughty sketch of him is seen by some members of the Ton, the only way to salvage Esme’s reputation is for the two of them to wed. After their hasty marriage, they have to learn who the other is before they can even think about love, and their road to discovery and ultimate happiness is rocky to say the least.

TRC:  You recently wrote the 3rd book in your contemporary romance, The Graysons. Will there be more books in this series?

Tracy:   Unfortunately, there are no current plans for additional books in the Graysons series. I hope some day to write P.G.’s story, but it will have to wait for the right time.

TRC:  You write Regency Historical and Contemporary Romance. Do you have a preference? Which do you find more challenging to write?

Tracy:   I enjoy writing both genres and have discovered that each has its own challenges. There is as much research needed for a contemporary novel as there is for an historical. A contemporary novel is challenging in that we all live in today’s world and can judge the authenticity of what an author brings to a modern story. Therefore, good research of the ever changing nuances of today’s society is a must.

And while none of us can truly know what it was like to live in the early nineteenth century, the desire to be as realistic as possible requires a level of historical knowledge that can only be acquired through careful research. So, I’ve found that there is no advantage to contemporary vs. historical romance when it comes to the writing.

TRC:  Have you thought about writing in other genres?

Tracy:  Yes, I have stories for a variety of genres, paranormal, American historical and YA, although they all share the common thread of romance. Much like a musician who can play a variety of instruments, I think most writers can write in a variety of genres. But at this time, I am happy writing Regency historical romance.

TRC:  Can you please tell us what you working on now, and what you have upcoming in 2016?

Tracy:  I am currently working on the last book in the Rakes of Cavendish Square trilogy. This is Lord Lawrence Byron’s story. His profession as a barrister brings a very special woman, with an unusual secret, to his notice and into his life. And of course, complications and seduction will ensue along the way.

TRC:  What is your writing process? Do you like to outline your story before you start? Do you have a specific place you like to write? Is there a special time of day that works best for you?

Tracy:  I have a home office where I always work; it’s rare that I write outside of my office. Typically, I try to deal with administrative matters during the day (you’d be amazed at all the emails and writing-related business things authors do). In the evenings, I write my books–generally well past midnight and into the wee hours. I work five days a week–unless I have a deadline that’s getting close, then you’ll find me pounding the keyboard at all hours, seven days a week, until the manuscript gets completed.

For atmosphere, I turn on my iPod and listen to instrumental movie scores and classical music. I love tea, so there’s always a mug nearby to keep me adequately caffeinated. I also have three little feline assistants who like to “help” me create. So far they’ve staked out most of my printer table, part of my desk and the top of my filing cabinet for use as cat beds. (To see photos of my furry assistants, please visit my website at www.tracyannewarren.com)

TRC:  What books, authors or people in your life have influenced your writing?

Tracy:  On a personal level, my sister, Leslie, had a big impact on my writing before I got published because she always believed in me and encouraged me to go after my dream of becoming an author. She inspires me with her continued belief in me and support of my writing career.

Writers who inspired me when I was growing up and before I became published, include Judith McNaught, LaVyrle Spencer, Nora Roberts and Kathleen Woodiwiss, to name just a few. Judith McNaught and LaVryle Spencer are not only two of my personal favorites, but they showed me how it “should” be done through their beautiful words and compelling characters and stories. In fact, I had the opportunity to meet Judith McNaught in person, and let me tell you, she more than measured up to my expectations. She is a lovely, gracious lady, who was so kind to me. It was a real wow moment I’ll never forget.

TRC:  When you are not writing, what other interests or hobbies do you have?

Tracy:  I tend to be a homebody, so time away from writing for me usually means doing something at home. Cooking or maybe watching a TV show I’ve taped earlier that week—or a few weeks earlier––since I write when shows originally air. I enjoy crocheting, playing with my cats and reading, of course. It’s all terribly glamorous, as you can see.:)

TRC:  Would you like to add anything else?

Tracy:   I’d like to thank The Reading Cafe and its members for giving me the chance to introduce myself, and to chat about aspects of the writing process and my books. I hope all of you have as much fun reading Happily Bedded Bliss as I had writing it – and that you’ll look for Bedchamber Games, Lawrence’s story, in 2017!

LIGHTNING ROUND

Favorite Food: Chocolate – does that count as a food? <g>

Favorite Dessert:  Chocolate – in any form

Favorite TV Show:  I don’t have one favorite TV show, per se, because of the different types of shows available. Currently my top shows would have to be The Good Wife, for drama, The Big Bang Theory, for comedy and The Amazing Race, for a reality show.

Favorite Movie or TV Celebrity: I love movies, but can’t name a favorite off the top of my head. So, how about another television series? Definitely, Downton Abbey – particularly this final season and Mary’s husband, Henry Talbot (the yummy, green-eyed Matthew Good).

Favorite Fictional Character (not your own): Harry Potter

Milk or Dark Chocolate: Probably milk, but I wouldn’t turn down a piece of dark. <g>

Dog or Cat:  As anyone who has looked at the little furrballs on my website knows, it has to be cats.

TRC:  Thank you Tracy Anne, for taking the time to answer our questions. We wish you the best of luck with Happily Bedded Bliss.

Tracy:  Once again, thank you for inviting me to talk to everyone at the Reading Café. It’s been a lot fun!

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date March 2, 2016

Best-selling author Karlyn Campbell is ready for a new start after her recent divorce from a temperamental artist. When she receives word that her father had a stroke, she heads for Walton Springs with mixed feelings. Broderick Campbell wrote Pulitzer Prize-winning literary novels and denounced his daughter’s work as pedestrian and commercial, causing a rift that finally heals on his deathbed. Karlyn chooses to stay in the small Georgia town to write her popular Matt Collins series and decides to try her hand at true crime when Atlanta’s Rainbow Killer, Roy G. Biv, captures her interest.

Detective Logan Warner’s marriage didn’t survive after he lost his twins to a crazed killer who was never caught. He returns to his hometown’s police force and runs for police chief, happy he’s escaped big city crime and corruption. Emotionally dead, his interest in life is renewed when he falls in love with Karlyn and begins to build a new life with her.

But the Rainbow Killer moves beyond Atlanta, leaving a trail of dead bodies painted in bright hues in several towns north of the city. Leaving no trace evidence or DNA and choosing random victims with no apparent rhyme or reason, Roy proves unstoppable. Then he arrives in Walton Springs, threatening the peaceful town with his murder spree. With a serial killer in their back yard, Logan and Karlyn unite with the FBI to find the killer—before he finds them.

••••••

REVIEW: Illusions of Death is a new Mystery/Crime/Romance novel from one of my favorite authors, Lauren Linwood. This deliciously thrilling novel starts off with a serial killer just completing the last of a series of murders, giving chilling insight into the mind of this diabolical murderer. Thinking of these crimes as a particular genius in the spree of child abductions in Atlanta. These included, the kids of a fireman, a school superintendent’s daughter, a cop’s twins (important), and a mayor’s grandson. This latest spree of ‘specimens was a group of high-end prostitutes. While burying the latest victim, a new series of murders presented itself in the appearance of a rainbow. The next mission of murders would be done as the rainbow killer….murdering victims and painting them in the hues of a rainbow…a specific order.

It difficult to summarize this novel in a few paragraphs, as so much goes on. The set up begins with Logan Warner, a detective, who joined the Walton Spring department after leaving Atlanta. He’s divorced and often thinks of his twin children who were murdered a few years prior. He and his partner find Broderick Campbell, famous author having what looks like a stroke on the side of the road. The man having the stroke asked him to “call Karlyn”. He and his partner call for an ambulance and then go find the author’s wife, Martha, and let her know.

Karlyn Campbell, successful author of suspense novels featuring her character Matt Collins, has finished her last manuscript and delivered it to her agent. She’s told her novel and character may be in a movie deal, in which she is given a change at writing the screenplay with the help of a seasoned screenplay writer of her choice. She of course is happy, but it seems her marriage to Mario Taylor is on the rocks…in fact headed for a nasty divorce. She meets Logan when she comes to town to see her dying father in the hospital.

That’s the set-up, I don’t do spoilers but what I can tell you is that this begins a thrilling ride of murders, family drama, budding romance that has the possibility of healing our detective’s and writer’s broken hearts. This story is chock full of twists and happenings, great romance and so much more. It’s a page turner that is very difficult to put down.

Grab your favorite beverage and settle in for a magnificent read!

He needs the kind of rescue only she can provide…

Glass artist Savannah Smith expected a marriage proposal for Thanksgiving—just not from her strong, silent, super-hot neighbor. But when misplaced mail and a wayward can of paint lands them in a compromising position right as her family arrives for dinner, they assume he’s “The One” she’s been talking about.

Then his family shows up.

Fate dealt a crippling blow to paramedic Beau Montgomery’s heart, and he isn’t about to put it at risk again. Except, with his mother crying tears of joy over his surprise engagement to the sexy little blonde next door, he can’t bring himself to ruin her “Christmas miracle.”

Somewhere between the paint can to the head and the chaotic family trip to the ER, Beau manages to talk Savannah into being his fake fiancée long enough to survive the holidays.

If, of course, they don’t fall in love first

•••••••••••

REVIEW: EMERGENCY ENGAGEMENT is the first installment in Samanthe Beck’s contemporary adult LOVE EMERCENCY romance series. This is paramedic Beau Montgomery, and glass artist Savannah Smith’s story line.

Told from dual third person perspectives EMERGENCY ENGAGEMENT is a fake fiance trope that follows the building relationship between neighbors Savannah Smith and Beau Montgomery. When an ‘accident’ finds Beau on the receiving end of a paint can upside the head during the Thanksgiving holidays, Savannah will come face to face with her parents who expect to be introduced to her new fiancé-enter Beau, his sister and his parents who welcome the news with open arms. But..there is a problem with the scenario: Beau and Savannah are neighbors (basically strangers) not lovers. Keeping up the lie of their fake engagement becomes a struggle as their families begin an elaborate set up for their upcoming nuptials.

EMERGENCY ENGAGMENT is a friends to fake fiancé to lovers trope that follows the misadventures of Beau and Savannah as they try to head off a series of ‘wedding’ plans by their respective families. Thanksgiving, Christmas Holiday, and Savannah’s plans for the future all become too much for Beau to handle when he breaks the heart of the woman with whom he is falling in love-Beau has known grief and heartache, and isn’t willing to go down that road ever again. The $ex scenes are intimate and seductive. The story line ends rather abruptly-perhaps their story will continue in a future installment.

We are introduced to Savannah’s sister Sinclair who is well aware of the ‘fake fiance’ situation. Beau and Savannah’s parents continue to looks forward to the future. And the introduction of Beau’s fellow paramedics is fodder for some future story lines.

EMERGENCY ENGAGEMENT is an entertaining story with romance, love, heartbreak moments of humor, and a potential lifetime of regret. The premise is enjoyable; the characters are dynamic, colorful and real; the romance is passionate and hot.

Madison Foley is determined to stand on her own two feet, no matter how wobbly her circumstances. Fate, however, keeps throwing her off balance, and then sending heroically hot paramedic Hunter Knox to save her.

She’s put men on the back burner until she gets her life on track.

But Hunter’s got other plans.

Decisions. Decisions.

**Can be read as a stand alone**

••••••••••••

REVIEW: EMERGENCY DELIVERY is the second installment in Samanthe Beck’s adult, contemporary LOVE EMERGENCY romance series. This is paramedic Hunter Knox, and barista Madison Foley’s story line. EMERGENCY DELIVERY can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Madison and Hunter) EMERGENCY DELIVERY follows Madison Foley as she struggles to make it on her own. On the run from an addicted ex, Madison finds herself involved in a roadside emergency that will change her life forever. Enter paramedic Hunter Knox, whose ‘white knight’ persona finds our hero setting up home, if only temporary, with Madison Foley. What ensues is a slow building relationship between Madison and Hunter, as Madison recovers from her ‘emergency delivery’, and battles the demons from her past.

The relationship between Madison and Hunter begins as a medical emergency. One month later, Hunter discovers that Madison is once again in need of medical care, and offers our heroine a place to stay while in recovery. Their attraction to one another is immediate but Hunter knows that he must tread lightly where Madison is concerned. The $ex scenes are intimate and romantic but are slow in the reveal.

The world building continues to focus on the paramedics; their loves and their happily ever afters. Beau (Emergency Engagement #1) plays a supporting role as Hunter’s work partner; and Beau and Savannah take a permanent step forward towards their own happily ever after. The epilogue fast forwards the story line approximately six years where we get a glimpse at Hunter and Madison’s future, their family, and the possibility of something more. Because of the time-line jump, I am not sure how Samanthe Beck will incorporate the next installment but I am going to presume that six years does not pass before another Love Emergency is in the making.

EMERGENCY DELIVERY is an emotional tale about two people who met under extraordinary circumstances. The premise is enjoyable and entertaining but predictable; the characters are charismatic and animated; the romance is a slow build to a happily ever after.

Saylor Samson grew up far from the harshness of Dirk’s world. But ever since she was seventeen she’s been drawn to this dark and mysterious man who always seemed to show up just when she needed him.

After years of fated encounters, he’s back. This time he’s taking her. This time she’s ready for the ride. But just when the darkness in Dirk’s life begins to fade, Saylor reveals a secret that puts them both to the ultimate test. Now, Dirk has to make a decision: submit to his destiny with the MC, or choose his own.

DISCLAIMER: SINNER’S CREED is a different kind of romance story line; one that I thought crossed an invisible line, and in the end I am not sure how to categorize the story line trope. There are some guidelines that should, and must be followed to be labeled a romance story and in this, I am not sure where SINNER’S CREED will fit. Expect the unexpected, and be ready to step outside of your comfort zone.

REVIEW: SINNER’S CREED is the first installment in Kim Jones’s contemporary, adult SINNER’S CREED erotic, romance MC series focusing on the motorcycle club Sinner’s Creed. This is club member/MC nomad Dirk Dixon, and Saylor Samson’s story line.

Told from first person point of view (Dirk) SINNER’S CREED is a heartbreaking and emotional story line about two people whose lives crossed paths every few years until the one day Saylor Samson asked Dirk Dixon for a motorcycle ride. From there on out Saylor and Dirk were virtually inseparable and their fated relationship is the backdrop to Romeo and Juliet-two lovers never meant to be but finding happiness and forever a world away–or not at all.

SINNER’S CREED looks at the gritty and dark side of the MC life: the abhorrent and dangerous retribution to the fateful and destructive lifestyle that each member vows to protect. There isn’t always a happily ever after; too many times death is accompanied by a promise of revenge that circles the burning torment of what is and what has to be done.

Kim Jones writes a story about one woman’s desperate attempts to live, and one man’s need to give her everything that she wants. The premise is slow to build as our leading couple builds a relationship on the road while Dirk continues his work as a nomadic enforcer for the MC. The premise is powerful; the characters are courageous, energetic and heartbreaking. Fate had other plans; their destiny is in the hands of others; a romance built upon the here and now.

SPOILER: If you are looking for a traditional HEA, you will not get it with SINNER’S CREED.The integrity of the romance is destroyed in the final chapters of the book.

Interview

TRC: Hi Kim. Welcome to The Reading Café! Congratulations on the release of SINNER’S CREED!

Kim JonesKim: Thank you so much for having me! I’m honored to be here!

TRC: We would like to start with some background information. Would you please tell us something about yourself?

Follow: Goodreads/ Website/ Twitter/ Facebook

Kim: I’m not very interesting, but if you insist… 😉

I’m 30. From south Mississippi. I’m very close with my family—especially my Mama who cooks me fried chicken whenever I want it, which is a lot. I’m a college dropout, a Mountain Dew addict, make a killer cheeseburger and still have my Christmas tree up. I’ve been married for ten years to my best friend who still plays hide and seek with me. I have no children. And my greatest achievement was winning the Prudential Spirit of Community Service award in the seventh grade. Still to this day, I have no damn idea what it even means. But I made the front page of the local paper. And yes, I still have the newspaper clipping. Writing a book was a pretty awesome achievement too, but since I get paid to do it, I don’t feel like it counts quite as much. —-See? I’m pretty lame.

TRC: Who or what influenced your career in writing?

Kim: Well… I wish I could say I was inspired or that I had some sort of epiphany. That sounds better than the truth, but this is what really happened.

Me: “I’m going to write a book.”
Hubs: “No hell you ain’t.”
Me: “You wanna bet?”
Hubs: “Sure.”

So in a weird kind of way, my husband influenced me to start writing. But then I had to decide what to write about. I chose MC because my husband was in a motorcycle club, I knew the lifestyle, bikers were hot and I had plenty of material to start. By the end of my first book, I realized I’d fallen in love with writing. I’ve written a few poems and comedy skits, but this took it to a whole new level.
Oh, and I won the bet!

TRC: What challenges or difficulties have you encountered writing and publishing your stories?

Kim: The biggest struggle for me has always been separating fact from fiction. With MC’s getting so much negative media attention, I feared people would consider what I write to be true. Let’s face it—bad things are always easier to believe. So I try very hard to focus on the brotherhood and it’s true meaning, rather than the fictional story that’s filled with all the things people love to read about—betrayal, outlaws, murder… Those things, along with romance, sex and a relationship with a dominant, alpha male are what make books sale. But because this is my life—this story represents my husband and MC family and what they stand for—I feel it’s my duty to educate readers on the reality of an MC (brotherhood and what being in a club ACTUALLY means) while still giving them a story that is edgy, raw and engaging.

Sinner's CreedTRC: Would you please tell us something about the premise of SINNER’S CREED?

Kim: Sinner’s Creed is by far the darkest novel I’ve ever written. All my published works are about MC’s, but this one is about a 1% MC which will take readers deeper into the minds of those who live a life dedicated to the club. One mind in particular—Sinner’s Creed Nomad National, Dirk.

Dirk is a BORN SINNER, meaning he was born into the life of the club. In his case, his grandfather was a national officer of the club. At the age of 21, he gets his first taste of the life of a soldier in the MC. With the hopes of gaining respect and love from his grandfather, he commits a terrible act—only to find his grandfather is not impressed at all. In that moment, he transforms. He feels all his goodness is gone. He believes his soul is tarnished beyond repair. He spends the next 9 years of his life acting as an enforcer for the club—performing hits and maintaining order. But then he comes face to face with a woman he’s encountered on several different occasions. Saylor Samson is the complete opposite of Dirk. She’s kind, innocent, strong in her faith and to Dirk’s disbelief, attracted to him. The desire to have something good in his life becomes so overwhelming, that he decides to take Saylor on the road with him—throwing caution and the potential high risk of having her with him to the wind. Throughout their journey, Dirk finds a reason other than the club to live for. In turn, Saylor finds an escape from an emotional past that has haunted her for years. I’ll end by saying this is not a traditional MC or romance novel. It’s about loyalty, respect, sacrifice and above all…love—in the most unconventional kind of way.

TRC: How many books do you have planned for the SINNER’S CREED series?

Kim: I signed a two book deal with Penguin-Random House. So as of right now, that’s all I have planned. It will depend on the readers and their response to Sinner’s Creed as to whether or not I continue the series. But I’d love too! I actually have the story line for several more books. So hopefully you’ll be seeing a lot more of this MC in the future.

TRC: How do you keep the plot(s) unpredictable without sacrificing content and believability?

Kim: I have a very twisted imagination. LOL. I love the element of surprise, but I’m also one who likes to give readers the idea that what I’m writing could actually happen. It’s a struggle, but luckily I have a team full of people who are willing to listen to me go on..and on…and on about my ideas and they have no problem correcting me when I’m wrong. I actually have a “magical idea listening chair” in my office. It’s almost always occupied. Matter of fact, it’s occupied right now.

TRC: Without giving away any spoilers, how do you feel the readers will react to the outcome of the story?

Kim: When I finished this book, I knew people were either going to love it or hate it. There is no gray area. It was a risk I was willing to take and one I don’t regret. My characters are not just characters to me, they’re real people with real lives and real feelings who deserve real happiness and a real story. And regardless of how much this book differs from others in its genre, I believed my characters deserved a happily ever after in the most beautiful and satisfying way for them. And that’s exactly what they got.

TRC: Did you always have this particular outcome planned for Saylor and Dirk?

Kim: No. I wasn’t sure how the ending was going to play out for the longest time. It might sound crazy, but it was almost as if it wrote itself. I didn’t have to look at it from different angles or try different scenarios. When the thought came to me and I wrote it, I knew there was no other outcome possible. It was perfect for them.

TRC: There is a fine line between romance, erotic, and erotica in many of today’s popular contemporary fiction. What do you believe accounts for the differences between the sub-genres in today’s romantic stories?

Kim: If the book contains talk of sex, but never a thorough description of it, I would classify that as romance.

As far as erotic and erotica go, I seriously had no idea there was a difference. So thanks to Google and my “magical idea thinking chair” occupant, I’m a little smarter than I was ten minutes ago. I feel like that fine line has been blurred for quite some time. So I’m just going to go back to thinking there is no difference, because I’m concentrating wayyyy too hard on this one. Erotic…Erotic-a….Hmph… Who knew one damn letter could cause so much confusion…

Sinner's RevengeTRC: Do you believe the cover image plays a deciding factor for many readers in the process of selecting a book or new series to read?

Kim: Absolutely. And I think the people who have covers that don’t consist of a half naked man, and still manage to be successful are unicorns who possess magical powers.

TRC: When writing a storyline, do the characters direct the writing or do you direct the characters?

Kim: Oh, my characters OWN me. Collar me, cage me, call me “kitten.” I’m definitely their submissive lol.

TRC: The mark of a good writer is to pull the reader into the storyline so that they experience the emotions along with the characters. What do you believe a writer must do to make this happen? Where do you believe writer’s fail in this endeavor?

Kim: Every story is perceived differently with every reader. Some readers prefer to read a story that is real to them. They want to feel like it can actually happen. Others don’t mind if a story seems a little overblown or unrealistic. Every reader is different. As a writer, I don’t feel like any of us “fail” in this. It all depends on who is reading the book and what their preferences are. So I don’t think writers should focus on how to deliver a book that will appeal to a specific audience. Instead, they should concentrate on making it the best damn book it can be. And that starts by believing in the story themselves. I guarantee no matter what, there will be some who enjoy and others who don’t.

TRC: Do you listen to music while writing? If so, does the style of music influence the storyline direction? Characters?

Kim: No. I have to write in COMPLETE silence. The only noise is from that of my box fan that doubles as a smoke ventilation system. But I do relate songs with particular scenes in my book. Sometimes, I’ll drive around in my car for hours listening to the same playlist on repeat and replaying the scenes in my head over and over before I write them. But I can’t listen while I write. I’m easily distracted…

TRC: What do you believe is the biggest misconception people have about authors?

Kim: That we’re all introverts. I’m a huge people person. I never meet a stranger. And over the years, I’ve found that many are just like me. But there are authors who prefer to stay to themselves. On more than one occasion, I’ve came to the defense of some when they were accused of being “stuck up” or “rude.” As writers, we often live in our heads—creating stories, plots and characters. Our ideas come at some of the most random times. Maybe we saw a girl who intrigued us. Maybe we were afraid of being arrested if we walked up to her and said, “tell me your entire life story and do it slow so I can write it down.” Instead, we simply create our own story about them. It doesn’t mean we’re all introverts, or stuck up or rude, we’re just working.

TRC: What is something that few, if anybody, knows about you?

Kim: I’m pretty much an open book. I don’t have secrets…I talk too much for that. So I’ll give you something that’s not really a secret, but pretty crazy. I have a weakness for hitchhikers. I pick them up…a lot. Don’t judge… they could be Jesus.

TRC: On what are you currently working?

Kim: The third book in the Sinner’s Creed Series. Whether it ever gets published or not, I don’t know. But, Sinner’s Promise will be written very soon.

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Kim: Just a thank you to everyone who reads SINNER’S CREED! I know it probably took you out of your comfort zone so I can’t say thank you enough to anyone who gave it a shot.

Carrying the King’s Pride by Jennifer Hayward – a Review

Carrying the King’s Pride by Jennifer Hayward – a Review

Carrying the King's PrideAmazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / BAM / The Book Depository

Description:
One last New York night with Sofia Ramirez is all Prince Nikandros Constantinides allowed himself before returning to Akathinia, after a dreadful accident took his brother’s life. But before the royal rebel is crowned, Nik discovers that he didn’t leave Sofia behind alone!

In a baby’s heartbeat, Nik turns Sofia’s world upside down and whisks her away to his Mediterranean kingdom. Dissolving a politically perfect engagement is not what Nik—or his country—had in mind, but this proud prince will do whatever it takes to legitimize his new rule…with a wife and child!

Review:

Carrying the King’s Pride begins with Sofia Ramirez attending a swanky party with some of New York City’s elite. And, she knows “he” will be there, Prince Nikandros Constantinides. Even though she has enjoyed her time with the Prince, she knows his m.o. He is a kind of love them and leave them kind of guy. The moment he senses that a woman is becoming too attached, he cuts and runs. Unfortunately for Sofia, she finds herself becoming attached and decides to be the one to end their affair. Of course, they see each other at the party and Nik invites her to his penthouse, where she tells him that she is ready to end their affair. Nik is a little taken aback that she is taking the lead on ending it. He is not used to being the one being let go, after all. They decide to make love one last time, but little did either of them know how much that decision would change their lives. Forever.

After Sofia has left, Nik finds himself wondering why he cannot seem to stop thinking about her and the fact that she initiated the break up. But those thoughts are short-lived as he receives news that his brother has been killed in an accident back home in Akathinia. Even though he and his brother were not close, he knows that the death will devastate his family, especially his father, as his brother was the one who would become King once the time came. Nik had always been more about making money for their monarchy, but with the unexpected death of his brother, he would have other endeavors that he would have to dive in to: becoming King of Akathinia.

Once Nik arrives home, things start to happen quickly. Not only has he lost his brother but the ruler of a neighboring island country has set his sights on Akathinia’s riches and war looms. Nik is also to be married to a woman that will be politically beneficial, but when he finds out that Sofia is pregnant with his heir, all bets are off. He heads back to New York City to confront Sofia and pretty much cons her into going back to Akathinia with him. Once he confronts her about trapping him with this pregnancy, he tells her that they will marry and she will be his Queen. Sofia is devastated that he thinks she got pregnant intentionally, and vows that she will not marry him until he believes her. With so much on Nik’s plate, and Sofia being adamant that she didn’t get pregnant on purpose, he immerses himself into the political machinations of his country as he tries to be the man he feels he needs to be for the good of his family. But, once he sees that Sofia may actually be more of an ally than an adversary, they embark on trying to make things work. Work for themselves, Akathinia and most of all, for their baby. Will Nik be able to be the man Sofia needs him to be? Will he ever be able to believe that she didn’t trap him? Will Sofia ever be able to get through to him? Well, my friends, you will have to read to find out. And, what a read it is.

Jennifer Hayward has once again written a story that grabs you from the beginning and doesn’t let go. Sofia and Nik are both wonderfully written characters. Sofia is strong, independent and bound and determined to make things work out the way they are supposed to. Nik is strong, pig-headed and ultimately very vulnerable. Once you find out a little of his back story and his feelings of never having been good enough, your heart will break for him. Sofia was the perfect person to finally make him see reason and see himself as worthy. Of course, there are bumps along the way, but their journey together will melt your heart. I absolutely loved the political nature of this book. It is not over wrought with politics, but it does play a big part in the story. As I read it, I couldn’t help but draw parallels between the fictitious Akathinia and Monaco. If you’re looking for a quick read that is sweet and sexy with a little intrigue thrown in, this one is definitely for you. If you’ve not read Jennifer Hayward before, you are seriously missing out. She has very quickly become one of my favorite authors and I look forward to reading her beautiful stories for years to come. Well done, Jennifer Hayward! Very, very well done!!

REVIEW: SET THE PACE is the first installment in Kim Karr’s contemporary, adult The Detroit Love Duet erotic, romantic suspense series focusing on automotive designer/ businessman Jasper Storm, and journalist Charlotte Lane.

Told from alternating first person points of view (Jasper and Charlotte) SET THE PACE is a story line twenty years in the making reverting between the past and the present Jasper and Charlotte were childhood best friends but an explosion at an automotive plant left over four hundred people dead including Jasper’s father, and Charlotte’s dad the number one suspect when all fingers pointed at the man in charge. Fast forward twenty years, and Charlotte has been assigned the unenviable position as one of the journalists at the Detroit reveal of the new ‘Storm’ automobile, and finds herself facing a very angry, confused and unforgiving Jasper Storm. What ensues is a rekindling of friendship-a friends to lovers trope-that now finds Jasper’s life spiraling out of control, and our heroine facing the fight of her life.
The relationship between Jasper and Charlotte is acrimonious at best as Jasper refuses to accept Charlotte’s appearance as anything but trouble. He believes Charlotte is looking to destroy his career, and when all clues point to Jasper in a grizzly murder of another journalist, Jasper believes that Charlotte will stop at nothing to destroy his life. Overcoming the past, and the betrayal that has destroyed both of their souls, jasper and Charlotte take several trepidatious steps towards a happily ever after but Jasper’s reputation as a ‘manwhore’ places our hero in a less than flattering light. The $ex scenes are intimate, erotic and seductive.

Detroit is the backdrop to SET THE PACE. We are up close and personal with a city dying from a multitude of sins including greed, unemployment, poverty, lawlessness and addiction. Growing up less than sixty miles from Detroit, our family would witness the carnage, of a once powerful city, on the nightly news. Many of the landscape is familiar and heartbreaking.

There are several secondary and supporting players including Jasper’s business partners: Will Fleming, Jake Crown and Drew Kates; Detroit Mayor Alex Harper and his father, parts supply dealer Hank Harper. We are also introduced to Charlotte’s co-workers Eve Hepburn, and her boss Cole Reynolds.

SET THE PACE is a story of suspense, intrigue and mystery. There are a number of potential allies and foes who all have an agenda with Jasper or Charlotte. The requisite evil has yet to be revealed but the build up of possible enemies with vendettas against one or both of our leading characters is continuing to climb. From family to friends; acquaintances to childhood neighbors; everyone is suspect and no one is free from the fall out of that fateful night twenty years before.

SET THE PACE focuses on the past and the present; betrayal, revenge, secrets and lies. The premise is exciting with a number of twists and turns; the characters are colorful, charismatic and not without some questionable choices; the romance is a rekindling of what should always have been. Kim Karr blends the fragility of human nature into a story line what will captivate and fascinate until the very end….oh, forgot…..SET THE PACE ends on a cliff hanger so you have been warned.

Set The Pace teaser

excerpt

Charlotte Lane
Buzz. Buzz.
Startled, I jump and quickly place the frame back in its place.
Buzz. Buzz.
It’s the call button from the lobby. I’m not sure what to do. I should probably ask Jasper if he is expecting anyone before I let whomever it is up.
The hallway he disappeared down is fairly long and at the end are two doors. Both are slightly ajar. I can hear the shower running and music playing. I try to place the song. Just as I go to knock, I pause, and then grin, it’s Led Zeppelin—the same music that used to blare from his garage when he was out there with his father.
Somehow in my absentminded quandary, my fingertips have nudged the door open just enough that I can see inside the bathroom. Perfectly. In my direct line of sight is a huge glass wall and he is just beyond it.
My pulse is beating so hard I can feel it pounding at all my pulse points. I should leave. I don’t need to bother Jasper. Whoever it is buzzing to come up can just come back later. Yet, I can’t move. Or maybe it’s more like I don’t want to move.
Steam hovers in the air but there’s not nearly enough to obscure anything. And there he is, naked in the water, head bent as it sluices over him. His eyes are closed. One hand is on the wall. The other slides slowly down his belly and lands between his thighs.
Oh, God.
Now I really can’t move. I’m frozen in place. His hand is on his cock. I swallow the noise my throat tries to make, but I’m sure I don’t do a good job of it. Thank you, Jesus, he doesn’t seem to notice. No, he definitely doesn’t notice because oh, my God, now he’s stroking himself. Slowly. Deliciously. Up, then down, and a twist of his palm around the head of his cock.
I shouldn’t be watching this, and yet I can’t look away. This is private. For him only, and yet I have to wonder if it’s because of me. Is it his attraction to me that made him step back just moments ago? Made him have to relieve the desire he was feeling? Then why did he say he wouldn’t kiss me again?
When he moves his wrist faster, I have to stifle my sudden harsh breath with my hand. My eyes are glued to his body and although I should leave, I can’t. I just can’t. Jasper, doing this to himself, is the most erotic thing I’ve ever seen in my life. The only thing stopping me from reaching between my own legs is my perverted fascination with wanting to watch him come. Oh, and of course the terror of getting caught.
His mouth opens, water filling it and overflowing when he tips his face into the spray. I want so much to be in there with him, share the water, and feel that mouth on my body, but I’m not sure that’s ever going to happen. We seem to be dancing around the attraction we feel for each other. Like both of us are afraid to take that leap from a two-decade-old friendship to intimacy. Afraid perhaps of where it might lead, or maybe where it won’t.
I can’t be sure.
Then again, it could be that the ghosts that accompany us are just too strong to bear.
Soon he’s fucking into his fist with a deliberation that makes me weak at the knees, and I watch. I watch the way his muscles cord in his arms, the way his cock moves within the confines of his fist, the way his face contorts into pure pleasure.
Looking at Jasper, watching him about to come, it opens up something within me. The feeling is hard to describe and I can only think of one word that is fitting—primal.
His cock disappears inside his curled fingers and this stroke seems somehow more determined. Up, down, a twist around his crown, and then another twist. This time his head dips down, and then lowers still.
I press my thighs together to ward off the ache of arousal that is flooding me. I can’t hear him, but I wish I could. I know what he’s feeling, though, because I can see his mouth open and his face contort with satisfaction. He’s close. I can tell. And then soon enough, his taut belly strains, the muscles in his legs bunch, and then it happens—his desire jets out.
Never in my life have I wanted to make myself come like I do right in this moment. No, that’s not true. Never in my life have I wished for a man to take me the way I wish for Jasper to take me right now. Still, this is all kinds of wrong. I shouldn’t have watched him. I know this. Chiding myself, I lick salt from my upper lip and slowly, cautiously take a step back.
“Is there a show going on that I wasn’t invited to?”
That voice. I know that voice. The cynicism behind the tone.
Oh, God.
No. No. No.
