Atonement / Born to Die (McIntire County 1 & 2) by Winter Austin-reviews

McIntire County series

4.5 out of 5 for this reader folks!

It’s double review time. I love being able to review the same series on one review. Everything is so fresh in your mind, and the subtle hints that you can find in a first book are more recognizable when you start the second. I like catching the little “I see what you did there” moments.

This review consists of the first two books in the “McIntire County” series by Winter Austin. I am really beginning to discover I like romantic suspense, and have to say that Winter really writes it well. These books also touch on what I consider near and dear to my heart .. PTSD. I really want to give high fives to Winter for researching this topic thoroughly, and giving it the proper respect it deserves. I personally found that this complimented her characters wisely, and while PTSD has been debilitating in many ways, she has shown that her characters can fight through it with the right kind of acceptance, love and support. LOVE THAT Winter Austin .. SERIOUSLY! 🙂

Let’s get on with it shall we?

Review

Oh Boy .. this girl has some serious daddy issues. LOL

The story introduces Nicolette Rivers (Nic) as a McIntire County deputy and a former marine sniper. She has seen some pretty crazy stuff out there and it has left her with many internal scars .. the biggest being PTSD. When she is placed in a situation that makes her PTSD come to the forefront, Nic must do all she can to deal with her issues. She is also estranged from her General father and the remainder of her family. She just wants to be left alone.

Con O’Hanlon is a police detective that has been assigned to work with Nic when a string of apparent suicides begin to occur. Once the suicides are established as murder, the killer begins to play with Nic a little, bringing more of her issue to surface. Nic is a hot mess trying to keep it together, and Con’s support and ultimately love may be the one life line she has to cling to .. regardless if she doesn’t know how to do it. On top of it all, here sister Cassy makes an appearance, and it turns out she has General daddy issues as well.

Ya .. so much more, but you have to dive right in to get to full effect. It’s an incredible story, and if I had to make any negative comment it would be that I thought it was a little too long. That being said, the story was extremely engaging and thought provoking.

Review

We got to meet both characters here, highlighted in this book Atonement. So glad that Winter has written this and that I got to read this book right after her first one. I was still raw from the story and wanted more.

Cassy Rivers is Nic’s sister and a also a deputy. She helps her sis in the first book solve a case but this came at a heavy price. It didn’t help that the hot FBI agent that came to play is a complete jerkface, and her attraction to him has not diminished. She figures this out when he is back to help solve and track a couple of robbers.

Boyce Hunt is a jerkface. Straight up! He doesn’t get close to anyone, is all in for good time without labels, and comes from his own set of “Oh that’s why you are a jerkface!” He also totally got under my skin. When Boyce returns to McIntire Country, he is paired up with the smexy Cassy. He is all about reconnecting, but this time his past is an issue and things are getting awfully real with Cassy in romance department.

I LOVED this pairing. We got to understand Cassy a bit in the previous book, but Boyce has his own story that really set root in this novel. We did get to revisit Nic and Con and see what their future looks like, an I love that many characters has bigger roles in this book than they did in the first. I found myself needing the story to pick up the pace a little as there some slow parts, but when the speed pics up it’s well worth it!

Overall, I will absolutely read more by Winter Austin and I will also visit more authors that write romantic suspence. So if you are looking for a couple of awesome reads for the summer, that involves romance with a thrilling mystery, well developed storyline and characters, I would recommend these two in a heartbeat!!

HAPPY READING!

Excerpt

She had avoided any chance of entering the timbered areas of McIntire County, where the stuff of nightmares dwelt.
But not tonight.
Tonight nothing that mattered to her—not her family, her past, or her pride—was as important as doing her job. And damn it, Deputy Cassandra Rivers always did her job, even when it was obvious the orders might get her killed.
She and her squad-car partner, Deputy Deacon Nash, had been sent to this side of the county—the heavily wooded side—to patrol for the culprits who’d dared to rob a bank yesterday. With every mile she traveled through the darkened timbers, sweat seeped from her pores, saturating the first layer of clothing.
“Calling all units. Robbery in progress at the Speedy Mart, 1653 Elm St., Two unidentified suspects, wearing dark clothing and black sneakers. Suspects are armed. No sirens or lights.”
“10-4, dispatch. Rivers and Nash responding. Approximately nine minutes out, over.”
Thank God for small miracles. She yanked that car around, and as fast as the slick road conditions would allow, she sped back toward town.
“Easy, Rivers. We’re one of several units responding,” Nash warned.
Damn this crappy weather. No doubt the gas station attendant wasn’t in a situation to wait for whoever was less convenient to arrive at the rescue.
A few miles from the edge of town, the glare of headlights seemed to come out of nowhere. It took Cassy’s brain a few seconds to realize that the oncoming vehicle was veering back and forth between her lane and the other, and those lights were a lot closer than they first appeared.
“Shit!” She reacted without thinking, hitting the brakes and throwing the car into neutral, and braced for impact, hoping the cow kicker covering the grill did its job to protect them. “Hang on!”
The front wheels hit a slick patch, and suddenly the steering wheel jerked right and the car skidded off the road into the ditch. The nose dove into a snowbank, spraying the windshield with a powdery shower and bringing the vehicle to a rapid stop. Cassy jerked in her seat, the belt locking her tightly in its grip. Glaring at the whooshing wipers as they cleared the moisture from the glass, she unclenched her fingers from around the steering wheel.
“Rivers, you okay?” Nash asked.
“Fine, but pissed off.” Shifting the car into park, she left the engine going and removed her belt. “Those assholes are going to be in for a surprise.” She hit the lights, and as she tried to push her door open, it stuck in the snow.
Nash grabbed the mic and radioed dispatch. “Dispatch, be advised, responding unit has been in an accident and is in need of assistance, over.”
Cassy twisted in her seat to brace her feet against the door and forced it open wide enough for her to squeeze out.
“Copy that,” she heard the dispatcher reply as she fumbled through the drift. Nash would give their location.
Flashlight in hand, she scanned the area, making sure not to peer into the stand of trees at her back. Oh, how nice. The asshole who’d ran them off the road hadn’t bothered to stop and was now a faint red glow in the distance. The mound they’d plowed into was mid-calf deep, and by the looks of the tires, the car was stuck good. They’d need a wrecker. Upon making another pass toward the road, the flashlight beam glinted off metal. Cassy paused, her heart hurtling into her throat as the light revealed the secret in the dark.

••••••••••••

REVIEW: DARK ATTRACTION is the second installment in Alexandrea Weis’s adult, contemporary, CORDE NOIRE dark erotic, paranormal romance series focusing on the members of the elite and dangerous BDSM Corde Noire Society. This is wealthy businessman Sebastian (aka Doug Morgan) Dane, and nurse Samantha (Sam) Woods story line. DARK ATTRACTION can be read as a stand alone but for cohesion and back story I recommend reading the series in order as there is a continuing premise that is building with each successive installment.

Told from dual third person perspectives DARK ATTRACTION follows nurse Sam Woods as she endeavors to become billionaire Sebastian Dane’s latest submissive. Sam first met Sebastian while caring for his mother at a local hospital. Never one to pay attention to the patient’s family, Sam will soon be introduced to her new neighbor Doug Morgan – a man who offers the world of Domination and submission to our story line heroine. Sam has never considered herself submissive, and is unaware of the lifestyle that Doug is offering. What ensues is the building relationship between Doug aka Sebastian, and Sam, and Sam’s struggles to keep secret her ability to see and talk with ghosts.

Sam is able to communicate with the dead-those who have been unable to move on-but most importantly the spirits who need Sam to do something for them. Throughout DARK ATTRACTION three troubled spirits continue to make their presence known to our story line heroine-each with a connection to Sebastian, and the missing and presumed dead Nathan Cole (Dark Perception book 1).

The relationship between Sebastian and Sam is one of D/s. There is an immediate attraction between our couple but Sebastian makes no promises of love for the future. Sam is a woman who is slowly falling for the man who now controls every aspect of her life, and a man with ghosts of his own. Sebastian is a strong alpha and dominant character who is unable to keep from falling for the woman in his care. The $ex scenes are intimate, erotic and intense. Sebastian is passionate about the rules and regulations for his D/s relationship.

There are several secondary and supporting characters including spirits and ghosts, co-workers, and friends. We learn a little bit about Sam’s past and her struggles with her devout religious family; Sebastian’s past remains a bit of a mystery although there was some trouble between father and son which is an ongoing issue in the current time line.

DARK ATTRACTION is a story of friendship and love; submission and Domination; passion, intrigue and suspense. There are moments of spirited communication revealing sins of the past, and the realization that everyone hides behind a personal and public mask. The premise is captivating and provocative; the characters are emotional and intense; the romance is passionate and challenging.

excerpt

Sebastian hated this part; walking into the ICU from the waiting room. The beeps, bells, and whirring of the machinery, which kept the occupants of the ICU alive, upset him. They were alien noises that grated against his nerves.
He did his best to not let the sounds get to him, but as he went to his mother’s room, he felt his skin prickle with that well-ingrained fear of hospitals. The result of a precocious childhood.
When he reached his mother’s doorway, he spotted the pretty nurse, the one who insisted on being called Sam and not Samantha. His eyes drifted from the nurse to his mother in the bed. Her color was better, but she was still hooked up to the ventilator. Shit!
Falling at her home, she had hit her head and been knocked unconscious. The surgery to relieve the bleeding in her skull had been successful—or so the doctor insisted—but she was still not awake.
“She’s doing better today, Mr. Reinhardt,” the attractive brunette nurse with the long ponytail said to him.
How many times had he told her that his last name was Dane, not Reinhardt? Still, she called him by his stepfather’s name. His palms itched to correct her, but he refrained.
“Has she woken up at all?”
“Yes, she opens her eyes now and then, which is a very good sign. We should have her off that breathing tube in a day or two.”
He followed the nurse’s perfect profile. Sebastian thought her almost doll-like. Even down to her porcelain skin and petite, almost little girl figure, everything about her reminded him of a doll.
“Thank you, Sam. You’ve been so encouraging these past few days. I thought for a while she wouldn’t make it.”
“I told you she would make it.” Sam stretched her pouty lips into an attractive smile. “I have a sense about these things.” As if hearing something in the outer hallway, she raised her uncanny eyes to the door. “I’ll be back.”
She was gone before he could ask any more questions. Sam always did that.
It was as if she looked through him, and not at him, whenever he came to visit his mother. What he wouldn’t give to have her see him, to have the little nurse with those amazing eyes see him for what he really was. Ah, but that was for another time and place.
He walked closer to the bed and held his mother’s hand. Still warm and soft the way he remembered it as a child. With the ugly purple bruise on the right side of her face and the thick white bandage on her head, she didn’t resemble the mother he had known. Gone were her fancy rings, diamond bracelets, and designer clothes. The blue hospital gown made her look paler than usual, and without her always fastidiously applied makeup, she appeared older, much older than her sixty-five years.
“I’m here, Mother. You’re doing better. Much better.”
He felt the slightest pressure on his hand, as if she had heard him.
“That’s it, squeeze my hand. Let me know you can hear me.”
This time, her grasp was stronger and more deliberate.
His heart soared with relief. It was a small step, but it was progress.
“Looks like she’s coming out of it,” Sam surmised, entering the room. She pulled a penlight from her white jacket pocket and flashed the light in his mother’s eyes.
His mother frowned.
“Did you see that?” he demanded. “She frowned when you shined the light in her eyes.”
Sam shrugged her shoulders, not seeming very impressed. “Like I said, Mr. Reinhardt, she’s waking up.”
Her dismissive tone made that certain itch come alive in Sebastian. The one he always got when he discovered a new … project.
Sam went back to her table outside the room door and made some notes on his mother’s chart.
Giving his mother a kiss on the cheek, Sebastian whispered, “I’ll be back tomorrow.” Exiting the room, he stopped by Sam’s table. “Thank you for taking such good care of her.”
Sam never looked up from her notes. “I’m glad she’s doing better.”
“Will you be here tomorrow?”
Sam shook her head and became distracted by a patient in the room next door to his mother’s. “I’m off for a few days, Mr. Reinhardt. I’m sure your mother will be gone by the time I get back.”
He never got to ask her anything else. She ducked into the other patient’s room and went to the monitor above the bed.
Sebastian grinned. He would see the pretty little Sam Woods again. He wasn’t going to let this one get away.

•••••••••••••

REVIEW: DARK ALPHA’S DEMAND is the third installment in Donna Grant’s adult, contemporary REAPER erotic, paranormal/fantasy romance series. The REAPERS is a spin off from Donna’s DARK KINGS series which is a spinoff from Donna’s DARK WARRIOR series which in turn is a spin off from Donna’s DARK SWORD series- all set in the Highlands of Scotland. You do not have to have read any of the previous series to understand the premise. This is Reaper Talin, and Light Fae Neve Everwood’s story line. DARK ALPHA’S DEMAND can be read as a stand alone but I recommend reading the series in order for cohesion and back story. There is a building series premise regarding a former Reaper named Bran who is out to destroy those he believed did him wrong.

SOME BACKGROUND: The Reapers (believed to be a folk lore amongst the Fae) are a group of Dark and Light Fae, selected by Death (aka Erith), on their own deathbed, to do her bidding-Death is the judge and jury; the Reapers are the executioners. The Reapers are not harbingers of death, but are tasked with destroying the Light and Dark Fae who have crossed a line from which there is no return. All Reapers must follow two rules-never to fall in love; and never to reveal their existence to anyone. If you have read Donna’s DARK KINGS series you will recognize the familiarity between the two series as both follow a similar plot and premise.

Told from several third person points of view including Talin and Neve, DARK ALPHA’S DEMAND focuses on the imminent danger in the Light Fae Court. Talin has been assigned to investigate the ‘rumors’ of Reapers running rampant amongst the Light Fae. Long thought to be a myth or bedtime story for the younger Fae, the Reapers (or one in particular) have been ‘haunting’ the Light Fae, and Talin is sure he knows the identity of the person involved. Never far from his thoughts, the Light Fae Neve is a forbidden romance; a treasure that Talin knows will be destroyed by Death if Neve uncovers his true identity. As the investigation grows, Neve finds herself targeted; her family goes missing ; and Talin’s position within the Reapers becomes very real and dangerous to our story line heroine. It is never revealed how Talin and Neve met or became lovers; there is a history between our leading couple that is as mysterious as Rhi’s former Dragon King lover. Queen Usaeil of the Light Fae has been mysteriously absent from Court; she has been linked romantically to one of the Dragon Kings, and in this her ‘kingdom’ is beginning to unravel amidst the rumors of Reapers and doom.

The Reapers is a spin off series from Donna’s DARK KINGS series and in this many of the events over lap and run parallel to one another. The Light Fae Rhi is beginning to figure more prominently in both series revealing a growing power within. It has yet to be revealed which Dragon King has broken Rhi’s heart but she is a female not without many potential suitors and loves including one of the Reapers. There is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters including all seven of the current line of Reapers, as well as several individuals from some of Donna’s other connected series and story lines.

The world building focuses on betrayal and revenge. A one time friend, and former Reaper Bran is seeking vengeance against those who destroyed the love of his live, and the Reapers and Death are his ultimate targets. He will use anyone and anything to achieve his goal-Neve and her family are a means to an end.

DARK ALPHA’S DEMAND is an exciting installment where sacrifices forge bonds; where revenge knows no boundary; where family and friendships suffer their greatest loss. The premise is entertaining and revealing; the characters are captivating and inspiring; the romance is seductive and enchanting. Donna Grant adds another enticing element to her interconnected DARK series focusing on the magical and supernatural.

REVIEW:  DARK ALPHA’S EMBRACE is the second instalment (novella) in Donna Grant’s REAPERS paranormal/fantasy romance series. This is Dark Fae/ Reaper Kyran Lightslayer, and librarian River White’s story line. DARK ALPHA’S EMBRACE can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty.

SOME BACKGROUND: The Reapers (believed to be a folk lore amongst the Fae) are a group of Dark and Light Fae, selected by Death, on their own deathbed, to do her bidding. The Reapers are not harbingers of death, but are tasked with destroying the Light and Dark Fae who have crossed a line from which there is no return.

Told from several third person perspectives DARK ALPHA’S EMBRACE follows the Reapers as they go in search of the people responsible for killing the half Fae. The search finds Kyran and his brethren at the local library where River-the librarian-guards a secret with her life. When the Dark Fae attack, Kyran begins to suspect that River knows more about the Fae than humanly possible when she defends herself with the ease of a warrior, and the books she protects are the very things The Reapers have been searching for. What ensues is the forbidden but building relationship between Kyran and River, and the hunt for the source that threatens River’s life.

THE REAPERS is a spin off series from the Dark Kings, and in this, there are a couple of parallel story lines running between the two series: one of the Reapers is ‘following’ the Light Fae Rhi; and currently the ‘fallen’ Reaper Bran ( who has managed to escape from an inescapable prison in the Netherworld), and is wreaking havoc in Scotland, is travelling to the Fae realm in search of the Light queen.

The relationship between River and Kyran is forbidden by Death. Death’s team of Reapers must abide by a number of rules and one is that they not enter into any relationships otherwise be banished and the lover is destroyed. Similarly, like the struggle and continuing battles in the Dark Kings series versus the Silver King, one of the Reapers fell in love, and was banished into the Netherworld for defying Death’s orders. Death has seen the ‘error’ of her demands, just as King Con knows that he will never be able to stop his Dragons from falling in love. The similarities between these two series is familiar, and not without some déjà vu moments.

Most of the previous story line characters play secondary and supporting roles including Baylon and Jordyn (Reapers #1). The world building continues to focus on the forbidden; the search for the ancient books that reveal the history of the Fae families; and the annihilation of the half-Fae.

DARK ALPHA’S EMBRACE is an entertaining and enjoyable story line; a quick read that finds another Reaper falling in love and looking forward to a future. The premise is imaginative; the characters are passionate; the romance is intimate and intense.

I will add that I am having some issues with the titles in this series. ‘Dark Alpha’ does not seem to reflect the characters or the series direction, and although I was flummoxed by the first title in the series (but I did not mention my concerns), I think using ‘Dark Alpha’ in the titles is a little misleading. The Reapers are neither ‘dark’ nor ‘alpha’ as it pertains to the paranormal or supernatural romances.

FALLING UNDER YOU on Goodreads

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date May 10, 2016

Norma Anders has always prided herself on her intelligence and determination. She climbed out of poverty, put herself through school and is now a chief financial advisor at Pierce Industries. She’s certainly a woman who won’t be topped. Not in business anyway.

But she’s pretty sure she’d like to be topped in the bedroom.

Unfortunately most men see independence and ambition in a woman and they run. Even her dominant boss, Hudson Pierce has turned down her advances, leaving her to fear that she will never find the lover she’s longing for.

Then the most unlikely candidate steps up. Boyd, her much-too-young and oh-so-hot assistant surprises her one night with bold suggestions and an authoritative demeanor he’s never shown her in the office.

It’s a bad idea…such a deliciously bad idea…but when Boyd takes the reins and leads her to sensual bliss she’s never known, the headstrong Norma can’t help but fall under his command.

•••••••••

REVIEW:  FALLING UNDER YOU (Fixed 4.5) by Laurelin Paige is an adult, contemporary, erotic romance novella found in the world of 1001 Dark Nights multi-authored series. This is chief financial advisor at Pierce Industries Norma Anders, and PA Boyd Barrett’s story line. FALLING UNDER YOU runs parallel to the events in Laurelin’s FIXED series, and the FOUND DUET, and can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous series is revealed where necessary. FALLING UNDER YOU covers approximately 2-3 years in story line time.

Told from first person point of view (Norma) FALLING UNDER YOU is an erotic story line that focuses on a forbidden romance between office colleagues-a romance predicated on Domination and submission. Norma Anders is a successful business woman; a take charge CFA for Pierce Industries, and a woman who has fallen for her boss Pierce Hudson. Enter Boyd Barrett, Norma’s PA, and the man who will take charge and dominate Norma in the bedroom and in love. What ensues is a ‘secret affair’ between Norma and Boyd- a relationship that finds our heroine submitting to a man she ‘dominates’ at work.

FALLING UNDER is a story line that crosses over between Laurelin’s FIXED trilogy, and her FOUND DUET. Norma is Gwen’s sister (Found Duet), and is in desperate need of stepping back from her life. Throughout the original series the author hints at Norma’s possible relationship with Boyd, but we are never privy to the intimate details or the nature of the D/s exchange. At times, the story line advances several months in which we do not have access to the building relationship and in this I struggled with the lack of details as to their building love-for all intents and purposes, the story focused on the D/s exchange skipping most everything else in their personal lives. The premise is entertaining and provocative; the characters are captivating and charismatic; the romance is seductive, erotic and intense. If you are a fan of Paige’s FIXED TRILOGY and the FOUND DUET, FALLING UNDER YOU should not be missed.

Falling Under You Teaser

Excerpt

I pushed the door open and stepped onto the rooftop, grateful for the empty landscape if not for the hot, muggy night. Escape. That’s what this was. A much-needed escape.
I walked over to the railing and looked down at the street below, but my attention was still on the scene I’d just left. The awkward, horribly embarrassing scene. I groaned out loud. I could still see the look on Hudson’s face when I’d cornered him in the hallway and kissed him. Could still hear the disdain in his voice as he’d pushed me away and said, “You don’t want what I have to give, Norma. Trust me.”
But I did want what he had to give. At least, I was pretty sure I did. After the disappointing series of men I’d dated who’d failed to satisfy me in the bedroom, I’d realized I craved a lover with the confident, powerful strength of a man like Hudson Pierce. A man who controlled and had authority over me in every way possible. I’d thought that he would be the one guy who could handle that I was a smart, successful woman without letting it intimidate him. As his chief financial advisor, I’d been his right hand “man” for years. Couldn’t I also be the perfect companion elsewhere? The potential of the power couple we could make was scary and thrilling all at once.
Apparently, he didn’t have the same vision.
My flaws ran through my mind like bullet points on a PowerPoint presentation.
Too old (thirty-four, which was only a digit off from thirty-five)
Too serious (how else did a woman get to where I was in the business world?)
Too independent (I didn’t depend on anyone for anything, though I’d prefer the real deal to my seven-inch battery-operated boyfriend)
Too…not blond (the most frequent hair color of the women I’d seen on Hudson’s arm)
I groaned again. Stupid, stupid, stupid. What the hell had I been thinking? Obviously, I hadn’t been. I couldn’t even blame my behavior on being drunk—though there was plenty of alcohol at the event downstairs, I’d touched nothing but water all evening. The party was meant to be a celebration. Pierce Industries had just closed its highest earning year ever, and I was a key player in that success. Silly me for thinking that a better way to celebrate would be to announce my infatuation with my boss instead of raising a toast like everyone else.
God, Monday was going to suck. How could I face Hudson without turning beet red with shame ever again?

About the author

Laurelin PaigeLaurelin Paige is the NY Times, Wall Street Journal, and USA Today Bestselling Author of the Fixed Trilogy. She’s a sucker for a good romance and gets giddy anytime there’s kissing, much to the embarrassment of her three daughters. Her husband doesn’t seem to complain, however. When she isn’t reading or writing sexy stories, she’s probably singing, watching Game of Thrones and the Walking Dead, or dreaming of Michael Fassbender. She’s also a proud member of Mensa International though she doesn’t do anything with the organization except use it as material for her bio.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date May 10, 2016

Craft beer and the sexy men who brew it.

A beautiful neighbor. A complete stranger. That’s all she was when I moved in next door.

Adelyn Maxwell is my neighbor but she’s no girl next door. The more I come to know her, the more I discover she’s a good girl with a lovely dark side. And maybe I don’t want her to stay on her side of the fence.

I want to disturb the rhythm of her pulse.

I want to see the way her hair spills on the bed when she lies beneath me.

I want her to teach me the dirty pretty things she desires behind closed doors. And she does.

But mostly I want to leave my mark on the most intimate, untouched part of her body. Her heart.

A seemingly insignificant intersection of our lives neither of us recalls suddenly becomes a pivotal moment in our future. We aren’t strangers at all. And our paths aren’t crossing for the first time.

These twists and turns of fate will become one of two things: a wrecking ball to tear us apart or the connection to bond us together forever.

••••••••••••••

REVIEW: STOUT is the second installment in Georgia Cates’s contemporary, adult LOVIBOND erotic, romance series focusing on three friends-Lucas ‘Tap’ Broussard, Oliver ‘Stout’ Thorn, and Porter of Lovibond Brewery. This is Lovibond co-owner Oliver Thorn, and events coordinator Adelyn Maxwell’s story line. We were first introduced to Oliver in book 1-TAP-Oliver is Lawry’s brother. STOUT can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story line is revealed where necessary.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Adelyn and Oliver aka Max and Thorn) STOUT focuses on the building relationship between new neighbors Adelyn and Oliver-a relationship that begins with a welcome to the neighborhood basket of baked goodies, a nosy sister who asks all of the right questions, and a PR event for Lovibond Brewery. What ensues is a slow building relationship between two people whose previous love matches resulted in broken and destroyed hearts. Trust must earned, and in this, our couple find themselves at odds on more than one occasion.

The attraction between Adelyn and Oliver is immediate and visceral but neither one is willing to act on their feelings and emotions. Their first night together finds Oliver out of his comfort zone, and out of Adelyn’s immediate life. Adelyns’s needs in the bedroom find Oliver focusing on the past. The $ex scenes are erotic, seductive and provocative.

STOUT has a large ensemble of secondary and supporting characters including Lawry and Luke from TAP; Lawry and Oliver’s amazing parents; and Adelyn’s preacher father and his wife. We are also introduced to several friends and acquaintances, as well as Oliver’s new PA who may or may not be having an affair with Porter. Lawry’s friends Kelsey and Ivy make a cameo appearance at Oliver’s thirtieth birthday party-these girls like to tell it like it is. The world building continues to focus on the ‘craft beer’ industry though not as detailed as book one.

Georgia Cates seduces the reader with her stories of romance, love, family and a HEA. The premise is moving and compelling; the characters are captivating, entertaining and passionate; the romance is sensual and spirited. STOUT looks at heartbreak and betrayal; love and understanding; moving forward and letting go of the past.

“Are you all right?”
I see what I think is concern in Oliver’s eyes. “Not at all.”
Oliver comes to me, takes the dish towel from my hand and tosses it onto the counter. “I want you to leave that nipping son of a bitch here and go for a ride with me on my bike.”
“I don’t know about that.”
“Have you ever ridden on a motorcycle?”
“No.”
“Are you afraid?”
“No.” Yes. But not of metal and rubber or the speed in which the two will carry us.
“Then go for a ride with me. We’ll cruise around the block and if you don’t like it, I’ll bring you right back. Promise.”
I look at Oliver’s attire and then mine. Shorts and tank top probably aren’t ideal for riding. “Give me a minute to change.”
“Okay.” He grabs a biscuit. “Saving these for anyone?”
“No. Have as many as you like. Jam is in the fridge.”
I return wearing faded skinny jeans, a fitted black V-neck T-shirt, black combat boots. I have no intention of brushing my hair for an hour to remove a bazillion knots so I go with a fishtail braid. “Ready.”
“Wow. You look like one badass chick.” I hold out my foot to better display the lace-up boots Maurice calls shit-kickers. “But you don’t just look the part. You are a real badass.” Oliver’s words are a reminder of last night’s blunder.
“Yeah, about that.” Do I own it and roll with the badass perception he has of me? Or do I apologize for going there? Was it TMI?
I can’t decide so the words don’t come.
“I understand more about what influenced your decision than you might think. Don’t be sorry you told me. And don’t be freaking out about it.”
“I’m not freaking out about it.” Lie. Lie. Lie.
He points at the spread of baked goods that says otherwise. “You are totally freaking out about telling me. But don’t. If there’s anyone who gets it, it’s me.”
If there’s anyone who gets it, it’s me. Something has happened to this man. He knows pain. “Tell me about it.”
I don’t have to flesh it out. He knows what I’m asking for.
Hook, line, and sinker. I’m sucked into the storm spinning out of control behind the dilated blackness of his blue eyes.
What I see there confirms I’m right. Something bad has happened to Oliver Thorn.
“I’ll tell you. But first, we ride.”
“Deal.”
Dark stealth. Glossy black rims. Polished to perfection. I’ve seen Oliver’s bike from next door but it’s a much more impressive-looking piece of machinery up-close. “It’s lovely.”
He stops and stares at me. “It’s a custom Ducati Monster 821 Dark. It’s not lovely. It’s badass.” I giggle. Boys and their toys.
“It’s a lovely badass.”
“Maybe you’re the lovely badass.” Damn. There’s that smile again. I bet he can use it to get anything he wants from women.
Lovely. I’m accustomed to compliments from men. I’m often told I’m sexy. Pretty. Beautiful. I once took pleasure in hearing those things from men, especially Martin, but now I receive those words with a grain of salt. And I will this time as well since I’m unsure if Oliver makes a habit of using flattery on women.
However, badass strikes a different chord in me; it’s a reminder of the things I told Oliver last night. All my wrongdoings.
He holds up a black leather jacket. “It’ll get a little cool even though it’s May. Especially if we’re still out after dark.”
I turn and slip my arms into the sleeves. I spin around and he surprises me by closing the zipper teeth and pulling the clasp upward until it stops at my breasts. “A little snug.”
I suck in but it makes my chest rise bigger. No way the zipper is going any further like that.
It’s obvious the jacket belongs to a woman smaller than me. “Guess my boobs are bigger than your ex-girlfriend’s.”
“Breathe out and relax your shoulders.” He pulls the leather together and then yanks the zipper clasp up and over my D-cups. “Your boobs are bigger than my sister’s. This is her jacket.”
“Oh.” I smile on the inside, not daring to let him see me delight in him noticing my boobs. Or my relief in knowing he hasn’t put me in something belonging to an old girlfriend.
“Next.” I take the all-black helmet he offers and slip it over my head. I study the outline of his facial hair as he works on adjusting my chinstrap.
“I feel like a little girl being dressed by her daddy.”
He grins but avoids my eyes. “There’s so much I could say to that.”
“I suppose there is.”
“Feel okay?”
“Despite being squeezed like I’m wearing a corset, yeah.”
He grins and grabs the end of my braid, twirling the end around his finger. “I love red hair. It’s my favorite.”
Oliver Thorn is touching my hair, twirling my hair. My red hair, which he says is his favorite. Do not pant so he can hear you, Adelyn.
I wondered if he intended for lovely badass to be flirtatious. But there’s no questioning this.
He’s insinuated he has demons in his past, which give him the ability to understand my actions, but he must see I’m a little unhinged emotionally. It isn’t possible to miss.
“I once despised it. I used to bleach it blonde with drugstore hair color.”
“Never. Do. That. Again.” There’s an alpha-like tone in his voice. Almost growly. And it sends a sharp tingle down my body. I haven’t felt that in years, and I welcome it.

Review:

I assumed that the use of “Antichrist”, as in what not to refer to your boss, when reading the Top Ten rules for how to survive at Starr Media, was offensive in the ways of the supernatural.  Duh, Carmen, this is not PNR (nor the fantasy world of Darynda Jones).  The moniker, nevertheless, wasn’t so farfetched, let me tell you.  The Rule Book by Jennifer Blackwood traverses the minefield of workplace romance, but aggravating coworkers and a devious twist builds up the tension for a complete story.  Better the devil you know…

As entertaining as this was, I believe my interpretation conflicts with the author’s intention.  Brogan Starr, CEO, maintains a certain standard at work that could be construed as “exacting”.  He’s quite young to be so successful, but that power comes with hard lessons and limits.  Add to that ethic a gorgeous, tattooed exterior and Lainey is one smitten gal.  While Brogan might be occasionally charming, he is also snappish and condescending towards Lainey, his second assistant.  It’s not a one-time exchange, either.  Lainey’s learning the ropes from the not so helpful “first”, yet Brogan reprimands Lainey for simple mistakes.  While that’s not unusual within a boss and employee dynamic, Lainey suddenly/inexplicably voices a compliment of Brogan’s personality?  I get that Ms. Blackwood was developing Brogan and Lainey’s relationship, a clearly stated, forbidden rule, but the attraction wasn’t organic.  It was entangled in do’s and don’ts.

Only when the story took a personal angle, when the story demonstrated the ebbs and flow of any relationship worth saving, did I find the heart in her storytelling.  Ms. Blackwood gives Brogan’s rules purpose (and Lainey a spine), but she also depicts the risks one faces when you’re unable to yield on occasion.

I enjoyed The Rule Book, but I can’t help feel it could have been more thoroughly fleshed out.  Self-aggrandizing characters revealed a dark side, but it was too brief.  I would have explored such nefarious plotting and presented precise restorative justice to both Brogan and Lainey.  Maybe I ask for too much, lol?

Rules become ineffective when they break spirits; leniency is key to sustaining happiness.  Can Brogan and Lainey run the rule book through the shredder?  Pick this up for a light summer read.

Review:

OMG, my head is spinning, don’t know which way is up or down, I feel like I’m on some funky acid trip right now.  That is the only way I can sum up Invision by Sherrilyn Kenyon for you. It’s a wild, crazy, information overload adventure filled with our favourite characters and Kenyon’s overly imaginative mind.  My note taking skills were seriously put to task in this one.  In true Kenyon fashion she continues her CON series by answering questions from the past book, creating new questions and dropping bombs on us we don’t see coming. These bombs leave our head spinning, jaw hanging open, and in the words of Achmed the Dead Terrorist yelling out Holy Crap!!!  I don’t know how many times I said that, along with my other favourites I tend to shout out; ‘No way!, Oh come on, seriously???? I thought my jaw was going to come unhinged by books end from all the shock factor she generates in Invision.  However, as much as Kenyon drove me crazy and made me feel like this book should’ve been longer for all the information she tossed my way, I did love this addition to her CON series.  There was never a dull moment in this one.

Speaking of which, the information comes at us fast and furious and there really are moments when you will find yourself re-reading a paragraph or page 2 or 3 times to make sure you read that right. The bombs Kenyon drops on us are mind-boggling and you’ll just have to read this one to find out what they are, because as you all know I don’t like to spoil plot lines and those types of reveals.  I prefer to let you experience those reveals as I did, and enjoy Kenyon’s gift for wowing the audience.  Some of these bomb drops include;

-learning more about Cherise and Kody and just what they mean to Nick and his Malachai
-the reveal of Xev and Caleb’s dad and their connection to Nick, yes Xev and Caleb are half siblings
-the reveal of who Jared’s parents are and his connection to Nick
-the reveal of Xev’s mom
-we finally learn just who and what Verlyn is
-Nick’s connection to M’adoc the Dream warrior, and what it would mean should Nick fall before having a son
-Apollymi’s brother is…thus connecting her to her Nick as well

These reveals left me shocked and sputtering and needing to remember to breath!!!!  One event Kenyon finally explains and I don’t feel I’m spoiling anything for you if I tell is how the first Malachai – Monakribos came into existence.  It’s no wonder the Malachai is one pissed off preternatural being.  Monakribos was in love with Rhubati, but he was tricked into killing her by Grimm and Laguerre because they drugged him.  Once the drugs wore off, he saw what he’d done and went crazy, took her blood and painted the Malachai symbols on his body and using magic damned all the world and everyone in it to hell until they fixed the wrong done to him.  Hell I’d be pissed too if that was done to me, and you can’t help but feel for the guy and see where he’s coming from.  We also learn that from Rhubati’s death Bathymaas springs forth from her body at the moment, but is a shell of Rhubati because she’s missing her heart.  It’s not until Bethany is reborn from Bathymaas, and Styxx falls in love with her giving her back her heart that Rhubati is finally complete. So this is why Kody has felt connected to Nick from the very beginning of the series.

We also learn more about the Eye of Ananke and just what it does.  It shows you the ‘why of the matter or person’ and it can’t lie or distort the truth.  What you see has either happened or will come into being.  Thanks to the eye Nick keeps having these visions of events past(Monakribos/Rhubati), and events to come.  With events to come Kenyon launches us into the far future where we meet everyone’s grown kids; Kyrian’s, Nick’s, Simi’s, etc, all doing battle against the Malachai Ciprian.  Ciprian has freed Noir and Azuza by opening the Gates to Azmodea, and we also learn that Simi’s son Lucien is in love with Nick’s daughter Charity, but never find out who the father of Simi’s kids are because Kody says it would’ve altered the future if Nick had learned that tidbit.  Now I really want to know that answer, but in true Kenyon form she doesn’t speak of it again, arrrrr, so frustrating!!!!  I guess we just keep reading the series.  By books end another bombshell is dropped as we learn Ciprian is Nick’s kid as well, but I was completely stunned and pissed off by the reveal of his mother.  There’s no way Nick would get together with this female if she were the last female standing.  I’m thinking he had to have been tricked like Monakribos was before becoming the Malachai.  I really wish the next book were released already. Why must Kenyon make me wait another year to find out more about this reveal and everything else she dropped on my head in Invision.

Oops, before I forget, one little tidbit we find out that is funny, but answers a few questions about our zombie hunting fave Bubba, his dad is actually a former Hellchaser, but that part of Bubba’s blood is dormant and his father never told him about it, but feels guilty because one of his dad’s enemies is the one responsible for Bubba’s wife and son’s death.  His dad feels guilty over it and keeps a close watch on his son now.  No wonder Nick and Bubba hit it off so well and why Bubba is attracted to Nick’s mom.  Yes, once again the plot thickens.  No wonder the guy is a little cooky, but we love him all the same.  That part of the book had me howling with laughter along with many others parts of Invision.

As I said at the beginning of my review, I felt like I was on some crazy acid trip by the time I was finished this one.  Invision is everything you come to expect from a Kenyon novel; well developed characters you can’t help but come to love, humour and sarcasm in bundles, twists and turns you never see coming, and reveals about characters that leave you stunned speechless, or yelling like a loon at you Kobo e-reader. I don’t know how Kenyon plans to pull everything together past, present and future by the time this series ends, and we get Nick’s adult DH book, but one thing we can count on, we’ll be in for a wild ride to get there. For all you Menyon and CON fans out there Invision is a must read and great installment to the series.

Until next time my fellow Menyon fans, happy reading, and I’m off to try and find my  zen again, LOL!!!
