But when Wil falls for a sensitive guitar player hailing from the wrong side of the astrology chart, she must decide whether a cosmically doomed love is worth rejecting her dead mother s legacy and the very system she s faithfully followed through a lifetime of unfailing belief.”

Review:

Summer of Supernovas is the debut novel by Darcy Woods.  Wilamena “Wil” Carlisle is a headstrong, enlightened and very unique seventeen year old girl.  She believes she is destined to follow the stars and the astrological chart her mother left for her before she passed away. But Wil is now down to the wire – she has just twenty two days to meet the love of her life the “one” that she is pre-destined to be with forever, at least according to her star chart.   Following the charts and the knowledge her mother left her with she embarks on an emotional, spiritual journey.

One night as she is star gazing and contemplating her life on top of the town’s water tower, she sparks the attention of one Grant Walker. Grant although afraid of heights, scales the tower in an attempt to rescue Wil, who he thinks is out to harm herself.  But once he realizes she isn’t there to harm herself it’s too late – he has already called the authorities and they are now on their way.  As they are making their way down the water towers ladder – they fall. Wil ends up in the hospital.  Embarrassed and humiliated that he read too much into the situation on the water tower, Grant tries to apologize to Wil by inviting her out to the local club that his parents own – Absinthe.  Once inside the club with her best friend Irina, Wil has a magical and mesmerizing dance with Grant.   But following her mother’s cues and star chart – Wil is quick to learn that Grant is not the right astrological sign; in fact he is the exact opposite.  He is a Pisces and that is what her mother warned her to stay away from, or so she thinks.

Grant is handsome and there is an undeniable connection between him and Wil.  But she knows he isn’t right for her – not in any sense of the word.  And if she is going to follow these charts to her destiny she must stay away from him. Its then that she meets Seth. Seth is handsome, warm, caring and surprisingly he is exactly what Wil has been looking for. Exactly what her chart has told her to seek and find.  In fact he is almost too exact in what she is looking for. But, in a twist of fate, Seth turns out to have a brother – and that brother is Grant.

Completely convinced that the stars and all the charts have aligned to bring Seth into her life,   Wil tries with everything she has to make her destiny come to pass. But when she finds herself and her thoughts drifting to Grant, she begins to realize that maybe our destinies can’t be found in the stars.  Maybe just maybe the one she is supposed to find was already there. And maybe the stars are wrong.

I loved Wil from page one.  She is unique, strong-willed and you just want to tag along on her journey to find true love and happiness. She is loyal to her best friend, Irina and stands up for what she believes in.  I found myself rooting for her and her star chart every step of the way. I wanted to believe just as she had.  But when Grant comes into the picture – there is an undeniable connection there. A connection that even the stars can’t conspire to create! Wil lives with her Gram and their relationship has been strong up until this point.  But when things come to light that Wil didn’t know about – things her Gram kept from her – their relationship becomes strained.  And you want more than anything for that relationship to right itself.  For the two of them to become whole again. Gram is one of those women that you just know has an amazing back story and you’d give anything to figure out what that story was.

I adored the sub characters of Irina – she was perfect as a best friend.  Strong, confident and just what Wil needs around her. She had me laughing and looking up words in the dictionary all at the same time! And while Irina doesn’t always buy into the stars and the charts that Wil follows – she still supports her and her decisions every time.   Manny is Grant and Seth’s friend and he was adorable from the moment he walked on the page.  He was hysterical and every time he opened his mouth he had me smiling or laughing.  I am hoping and praying to the stars above that there is follow up novels for both Irina and Manny.  Because there is a story that is just fighting to be told!

This story felt real – you wanted to believe in every page.  You buy into it and you want Wil to have everything she deserves.   And I loved every minute of her following the charts and doing what she thought was right to following her heart and believing in what she knew was right. I will be passing this book onto my daughter (I save and keep all my favorite to pass on to her) and I can totally see this being a huge break out summer book for young adults and teens, In fact – its written in the stars!

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date May 2, 2016

For almost two hundred years, Trace has searched for his mate. Now he’s met Cordray. Brash, sassy, and covered in tattoos, Cordray isn’t at all the type of female he thought his mate would be, but he can’t deny the way his body reacts every time she’s near. She calms him and sparks his desire in a way no one ever has, which terrifies him, because if she has that kind of power over him, what else is she capable of?

Cordray thinks Trace is the most exciting male she’s ever met, but she refuses to drop her guard and let him in. She loved deeply once, only to be spurned when her lover mated another. The heartbreak was so severe, she lost her ability to feel. Trace has reawakened her sense of touch, but she’s scared that if she takes another chance on love only to be rejected again, this time she’ll lose her life.

With both committed to pushing the other away, every conversation escalates into a war of words. But for these two, the fights are all just foreplay. It’s only a matter of time before their desire grows stronger than their resistance, and when it does, God help anyone—or anything—that tries to keep them apart.

WARNING: This book contains strong adult content and explicit sexual material.

••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: BOUND GUARDIAN ANGEL is the seventh installment in Donya Lynne’s contemporary, adult ALL THE KING’S MEN erotic, paranormal romance series focusing on a group of vampire warriors, who work for AKM (AKM is a group of elite vampire warriors and mutant vampires brought together to save the humans and rid the world of the Dreks- hybrid vampire shape shifters), and their mates. This is half-breed vampires Trace and Cordray’s story line. BOUND GUARDIAN ANGEL can be read as a stand alone but for history, back story and cohesion I recommend reading the series in order. BOUND GUARDIAN ANGEL advances the series a few weeks in time.

NOTE: BOUND GUARDIAN ANGEL contains graphic M/M, M/F and BDSM sexual situations.

Told from several third person perspectives BOUND GUARDIAN ANGEL follows three paths that overlap and converge at several points in the story: Cordray and Trace’s relationship: Trace and Micah’s D/s relationship and Trace’s need to be dominate; and the search for the person responsible for the break, enter and theft at Micah’s apartment.

Trace is a warrior vampire with the AKM and believes himself to be a freak-a hybrid vampire despised for who and what he is. When life begins to unravel for Trace, our hero seeks out his best friend Micah – a Dominant vampire who knows how to control Trace’s inner beast. Trace’s desperate need to find a mate finds our hero falling for the woman who betrayed our hero to the King. BOUND GUARDIAN ANGEL follows the developing relationship and romance between two vampires who want (and despise) one another with equal need and desire.

Cordray is a strong, alpha female who hides behind a mask of gothic jewelry and clothing. She is a vampire with a heartbreaking past, a secret connection to the King, and a woman with a softer side that focuses on the rescue of those without family and support. A few days in one another’s presence finds Cordray and Trace in the push and pull of attraction, their animosity and hatred for one another, and the call to mate.

BOUND GUARDIAN ANGEL has a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters including the introduction of several newcomers that will play a significant role in the lives of some of the men at AKM. Trace’s brother Brak makes a cameo appearance, and Micah will come face to face with his past. Several of the AKM vampires and their mates are with child-I am looking forward to getting an update on their lives and loves. Donya ‘hints’ at another potential growing family.

The world building continues to focus on the destructive and addictive nature of the vampire designer drug ‘cobalt’, and its connections to Bishop, the Dreks, and a series of underground experiments on half-breed vampires.

BOUND GUARDIAN ANGEL is a fantastic story of friendship and love; heartbreak and betrayal; fated mates and falling in love. The premise is captivating and provocative; the characters are engaging, passionate and intense; the romance is inspiring and challenging-destiny and fate cannot be denied. Donya Lynne continues to expand our horizons with the vampires of the AKM.

The Summer Dragon by Todd Lockwood – a Review

The Summer Dragon by Todd Lockwood – a Review

The Summer DragonAmazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / BAM / The Book Depository

Description:
Maia and her family raise dragons for the political war machine. As she comes of age, she anticipates a dragon of her own to add to the stable of breeding parents. Her peaceful life is shattered when the Summer Dragon—one of the rare and mythical High Dragons—makes an appearance in her quiet valley. Political factions vie for control of the implied message, threatening her aspirations, her aerie, her entire way of life.

The bond between dragons and their riders is deep and life-long, and Maia’s desire for a dragon of her own to train, ride, fly, and love drives her to take a risk that puts her life at stake. She is swept into an adventure that pits her against the deathless Horrors, thralls of the enemy, and a faceless creature drawn from her fear. In her fight to preserve everything she knows and loves, she exposes a conspiracy, unearths an ancient civilization, and challenges her understanding of her world—and of herself.

Review:

The Summer Dragon by Todd Lockwood is the first book in his Evertide series.  This is Lockwood’s debut novel, and it was an excellent start to a fascinating fantasy series. The world building by Lockwood was very well done.  This series centers on our heroine, Maia and her family who raise and train Dragons for the Military to use in battles.

When Maia and her brother are walking along the valley, they both see the Summer Dragon, a fabled High Dragon. When they hurry back home, their lives will change, as seeing a High Dragon could cause doom or major changes.  On top of this news, comes word  that in another valley, where they also train Dragons has been destroyed, with everyone murdered by creatures called Horrors. This will have the military and political people visit and bring havoc to their land. Maia has also set her heart to keeping one of the little dragonettes as hers, to train and become the dragon’s rider.

In a short time, those people will put the blame on Maia, as a witch who is bringing darkness to their land.  Maia and her family will do everything they can to prove them wrong, but when they tell her she will not get her own dragon, Maia will run away.  Along the way, she spots those horrible creatures coming closer to their land, and torturing a full grown Dragon, and his baby.

What follows is a wonderful, but tense storyline, where Maia will prove herself to be a true warrior, but no matter how good she does, and those she protects, the political enemies attempt to stop Maia.  It is an exciting story that will have three factions as enemies….the Horrors, the Dark mind control Dragon, and the political faction trying to kill Maia.  But most of all it is a beautiful love story between Maia and Keirr, her dragonette that she saved and adopted.   I loved them both together, as Keirr was so much fun, and loving, learning the language from Maia.   There were many characters, both good and bad in this story, but everything revolves around Maia.  She was such a great heroine; smart, savvy, sweet, passionate and a fierce warrior when she needed to be.  Getting to know all the Dragons, who lived with Maia’s family to help breed baby dragons was also fun.  Watching them talk to their riders, as well as to help in the battles that came against a terrible enemy, was so much fun.

Todd Lockwood tells a fascinating story that I could not put down, about a world with Dragons, with a slight historical belief and the political factions who want to stop the truth of the past.  Most of all, Lockwood has created a wonderful heroine, and her dragon as the story will be left open ended to continue this story in future books of Evertide.  If you like Fantasy tha is well written; a great heroine and exciting, I suggest you read The Summer Dragon.

Four women.
Twenty years.
Five hundred bridal fashion shows.

They’ve been friends since they were five, and modeling for Enchanted Bridal has been as much of a part of their lives as their friendship has. And this season has them seeing more than new wedding trends.

Hailey’s family owns Enchanted Bridal and she knows there’s a possibility that someday it will be hers. She’s not sure that’s the path she wants to take, but she does know that she’s been hopelessly crushing on the perfect man and bridal show model Logan Baxter III. While failing to gain Logan’s attention, she can’t seem to get rid of the less-than-perfect man – and model – Jackson Carr. He’s big and bold and tattooed – pretty much everything Hailey despises. And yet…there’s something about him that has Hailey questioning her definition of perfect.

Becca’s got a knack for dating the wrong kind of guys. When her current boyfriend publicly dumps and humiliates her, she’s devastated. Wanting to run and hide, she’s mortified that the stranger who had witnessed the entire scene is now part of the Enchanted Bridal family. But when Max Abrams offers her comfort and tells her that he thinks she’s beautiful, she has to wonder if maybe getting dumped by Mr. Wrong has finally led her to her very own Mr. Right.

Angie’s loud and feisty and completely fearless. That is until she gets dumped by the one guy she really had feeling for. It opens her up to insecurities she didn’t know she had and she’s not sure what to do about it. But when Sean Patterson comes back into her life in a big way, she’s not sure she’s ready to forgive and forget quite so easily. His persistence and her stubbornness make for an exciting chase, however, but at the end of the season, it’s ultimately up to her if she’s ready to quit running.

Ella’s been planning her perfect wedding to Dylan Graham since she was twelve. Together for thirteen years, Ella’s beginning to wonder if that number really is bad luck. She can’t focus on all that’s right in her life because all she can think about is what she may be missing. Their parents have taken over their wedding, her friends all seem to be in crisis and Dylan’s just not listening to her fears. Not one to ever make waves, she suddenly finds that that’s exactly what she’s doing and turning everyone’s life upside down in the process. The life that she once considered boring is now the one she longs for, but it may be too late.

Four friends.
Four crossroads.
Four possibilities for happily ever after.

REVIEW: FRIDAY NIGHT BRIDES by Samantha Chase is a contemporary, adult romance story focusing on four life-long friends –Hailey, Becca, Angie and Ella. For close to twenty years our foursome have ‘modeled’ bridal wear –flower girls to brides- for Enchanted Bridal, a bridal shop owned by Hailey’s mother Judith. FRIDAY NIGHT BRIDES looks at the struggles and romantic heartbreaks of four friends who believe the ‘grass is always greener on the other side’. There is a prequel novella-THE WEDDING SEASON-that introduces Angie’s friend Sean. You do not have to read the novella to enjoy FRIDAY NIGHT BRIDES.

Told from several third person points of view FRIDAY NIGHT BRIDES follows the friendships, relationships, personal discoveries, and the good and bad times of four friends who have had one another’s backs for as long as they can remember. Of the four, Ella is the only one in a committed relationship, bound for the altar, but a relationship that begins to crumble when Ella wants what the other girls have.

FRIDAY NIGHT BRIDES focuses on each of the four heroines through the ups and downs of relationship nightmares, falling in love, and moving on. There are moments of humor and fun; heartbreak and sorrow; love and passion but in the end Hailey, Becca, and Angie find love where they’d least expect it, while Ella takes back what it is she thought she lost.

Samantha Chase writes a sweet, romantic and entertaining tale of friendship and love. The premise is lighthearted and enchanting; the characters are an eclectic mix of passionate and fun; the romances are emotional and real. FRIDAY NIGHT BRIDES is a fantastic read for every romance fan and romantic at heart.

Romance covers-How much say does an author have? Do you believe a cover can make or break the success of a book?

Okay, so…funny story. When I first wrote “The Christmas Cottage”, I had no idea how to create a cover and had no idea where to find someone who did. Working with CreateSpace, they have free templates for you to use to create your cover. So I used it. I thought I did a good job, I was happy with it, but some of those early reviewers were unimpressed.

Like seriously unimpressed.

But it didn’t hinder sales on that book, oddly enough. That was the second book I had published and it’s the book that really launched my writing career. But after that book, I found a cover artist and let her design everything from that point on. However, I picked the pictures that I wanted and she worked with the fonts and the layout and really made something out of my two cents.

Working with a publisher was a completely different story. I don’t pick the pictures, I don’t pick the layout. The first five books we did together, they had those covers ready to go before I even had an idea of what we were doing. But when they presented them to me, I did get to say ‘This couple doesn’t work’ or ‘The heroine in the book is a brunette and you’ve got a blond’ and they made the changes. They’ve been very good like that. I believe you need to establish early on – and in your contract – that you have a final say in the covers.

Have I ever rejected a cover? Absolutely! Do I feel good about it? No! Someone is putting in a lot of time and effort to put them together and I always feel bad when I don’t like them, but at the end of the day, it’s my name on the cover and it needs to be something that I like or that I’m proud of.

Can a cover make or break the success of a book? I believe it can certainly hurt your chances of success. For example – when I was self-publishing and put out the first three books in my Montgomery series, I knew the layout that I wanted. Book one – “Wait for Me” – the cover was beautiful. I mean I seriously loved it and so did readers. That book did extremely well! I believe it hit #4 on B&N’s top 100 and was in the top 100 in the Kindle Store. Book two – “Trust in Me” – didn’t do as well. And to be honest…I didn’t particularly like the cover. It was still totally my ideas but I was on a time crunch and I didn’t put as much thought in to it and the sales figures showed. Book three – “Stay With Me” – did great in sales and the cover was pretty and appealing. So from a cover vs. sales standpoint, you could say that the cover of book two was partially to blame.

Back to my traditionally published books, we changed the style of the covers with the release of “I’ll Be There”. We went in a completely different direction. I was so caught up in the new look, that I didn’t pay as much attention to the couple on the cover. I got a lot of negative feedback from readers who thought they were very “blah” and they weren’t people who inspired them to want to pick up the book. I get it. But the sales were okay on that book. Not great but it had some good weeks. So we’ve really been working on that and the cover of my upcoming “Always Me Girl” has done extremely well in pre-order figures. Why? That cover is stunning. There is no other way to describe it. I love it. I want to wallpaper my office in it!

From personal experience, I’m more prone to purchasing a book that looks appealing from the cover – that’s what will initially grab my attention. Whereas a poorly designed or unappealing cover won’t even make me look at the back cover blurb.

Bottom line. Covers help. Make it appealing. Make it the best you can. And do what you can to have a say in it. It’s your name on the cover and you need to be happy with it.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date May 8, 2016

A beast, alone with the horrors of his past, the scar on his face a constant reminder of the man he’s become.

A beauty, on the run with her life in a tailspin, finds herself on his doorstep seeking protection.

Deeply misunderstood and dedicated to his life of brooding solitude, Maxwell Black is hesitant to let Elle McKellan into his home where his hideous secrets hide. But he’s unable to resist the allure of this desperate stranger.

Soon the magnetism between them is undeniable, the temptation unbearable. Elle, reluctant to risk losing her heart to this dark and broken man, struggles against the sexual tension, only to surrender to the combustible heat between them.

When Elle’s life catches up to her and threatens to tear them apart, Maxwell will protect the precious love he’s found by any brutal means necessary.

Black is a sexy, modern spin on the Beauty and the Beast fairy tale and is intended for mature audiences.

•••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: BLACK by first time author Aria Cole is a stand alone, modern day Beauty and the Beast erotic, romance story line focusing on the reclusive and scarred, library owner Maxwell Black, and twenty one year old Elle McKellan.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Elle and Maxwell) BLACK is a story of insta lust/love between two broken souls. Elle finds herself on the run from a family situation that has left her without a home, and looking around every corner for darkness and danger. Our heroine has been targeted, and she is unwilling to place Maxwell in the line of fire. Maxwell is a man who prefers the solitude of his library, fearing judgment for his looks and past transgressions. What ensues is a sexually erotic tale where Maxwell becomes Elle’s lover and protector, and the man who would one day control her world, and possess her body and soul.

BLACK is a quick read that focuses more on the sexual relationship between our leading couple than on what is happening behind the scenes. There are several instances of redundancy and duplication (e.g. strawberry scent); and our hero is a dominant, alpha male with issues of control that were questionable on a few occasions. BLACK is a novella length story, and therefore, there are some issues with cohesion, missing information, and the rush to the finish-I needed a little bit more of their back story to thoroughly enjoy what was offered. If you are a fan of insta-love, alpha heroes, and fairy tales that do come true, give BLACK a try.

Excerpt beige

“You’re only twenty-one?” I ran a palm through my hair, thinking how I’d already had my dick between her legs, tasted her on my tongue. Jesus, she’s just out of high school. “How can you be so calm? Jesus, I nearly fucked you on my desk. Why didn’t you tell me you were only twenty-one?”
“It won’t make it any less true the more times you say it.” Her eyes flashed. “And we’re not that far apart.” She shrugged, then popped a bite into her mouth.
“Not that far? Ten years seems pretty far to me,” I bit, never feeling so goddamn old as I did sitting next to her in all her pretty, youthful glory. Jesus, she was beautiful. Why was she even here with me? The angry bastard with the nasty scar? I didn’t deserve her.
“Hey, chill out.” She plucked a bite from the plate and held it out for me. I snagged it between my teeth and chewed, never breaking eye contact. Her eyes glistened with amusement as she watched me, her full lips tipped in a Cheshire grin.
“Fine. But maybe don’t tell anyone your age for now,” I ground through my teeth before tightening my palm at her thigh again.
A soft chuckle fell from her lips. “Who would I tell? You’re my only friend.” Her palm covered mine as she threaded her fingers through mine. “What’s with the hands on me all the time thing, anyway?” Elle uttered just as she took another sip of her beer bottle. A girl who drank beer, the walking embodiment of a man’s dream come true. She was so cool, calm, and collected, I could certainly take a play or two from her book.
“Let’s them know you’re mine,” I ground, still uncomfortable with the fact that she was so much younger than me.
“Yours?” She almost spit out her beer with her chuckle. “That’s a little soon, don’t you think?”
“Not when you know,” I answered simply. The silence fell and I knew her mind was probably on fire with thoughts again. “Listen, I don’t want anyone else thinking they have a chance with you. This shows them not to fuck with my property.” I squeezed at her thigh, thinking I’d explained myself sufficiently enough.
“Your property?” Elle hummed as she pushed her half-eaten plate of food away before downing the rest of her bottle. “Your property?”
Oh shit.
“Elle!” I hollered, my thick thighs pushing the table across noisy tile when I stood hastily. “Elle!” I took long strides out the door, feeling at my neck the burn of judgment from everyone in that small place. Fuck this. This was why I didn’t go out in public.
“Goddamn it, slow down!” I boomed down the sidewalk where I saw her clutching her purse and leveling me with a glare. Jesus Christ, this woman was going to be the death of me. “Don’t run from me like that again, hear me?” I cupped her elbow and pressed her body against the cool brick of the building. “You are mine.” I ran my nose up the curve of her neck and nipped at her soft earlobe. “Even if you don’t know it yet, I can feel it,” I grit and thrust my hands into her mass of wild waves, pulling her head to mine and fucking her with my tongue. She returned the gesture, but with more ferocity than she’d ever shown before. I yanked at both of her thighs and pulled her limbs around my waist, angling her against the wall, my cock nestled right between her legs, right where he liked being.
“I’m not yours,” she uttered in protest as she nibbled at my bottom lip.
“The fuck you aren’t.” I gripped at one thigh, my other hand trailing between us to find the slick skin under her skirt and beneath her panties. “And this.” I pulled my thumb through the silky hot flame of her pussy and brought it up to my mouth, letting her arousal glisten across my full lips. “Proves you’re a liar.” I sucked her sweet honeysuckle musk off my thumb, then pulled her lips to mine again, crushing her with bruising force as I tasted her, desperate for more. Always desperate for more when it came to sweet Elle.

Review:

Rival Forces by D.D. Ayres is the 4th book in her K-9 Rescue series. This is a fun series that is always exciting,  with a great couple and wonderful dogs.  I have enjoyed each book, and Rival Forces could be the best one yet.

Yardley Summers,  our heroine, whom we met in a previous book, is one of the best K-9 dog trainers and owns Harmonie Kennels.   She is a strong, smart, savvy independent woman, and was a great heroine.  Yardley’s doctor boyfriend has disappeared, and she has been trying to use her contacts to find him

Enter Kye McGarren, who runs a K-9 rescue team in Honolulu, who had a short relationship with Yardley when they were young, and he was in training with her now deceased father.  Though it’s been 12 years since he left town abruptly, when he receives a call from his army friend, Law (a previous book hero) about some concern for Yardley; Kye will go to Washington to find out why the feds are interested in Yardley and her missing boyfriend..

When they both come face to face after a dozen years, the chemistry between them was sizzling, and despite both of them trying to avoid any kind of relationship, their attraction to each was too hot to handle.  Things quickly become a bit meddled when the boyfriend turns up injured, and then all hell breaks loose.  What follows is an exciting suspenseful storyline, where Yardley and Kye must work closely together to fight off the enemy that put both of their lives in danger.  What I loved the most, were the wonderful K-9 dogs.  Yardley’s Russian wolfdog, Oleg, whom she was training to be a guard dog, and was considered vicious.  Kye’s rescue dog, Lily, a toller K-9, was precious, as she would always show her love for Kye by jumping into his arms often, and really was a great search and rescue dog.  Lily when in rescue mode would ride on Kye’s shoulders.  Both of these dogs played a big part in this story, and I loved it.

Kye was a great hero, and also very hot;  Yardley was his match, and they made a great couple.  This was a nice sexy second chance romance, with a very likeable couple.  Rival Forces was a wonderful exciting story, with a bit of everything; suspense, romance, dogs, edge of your seat adventure, and danger.

D.D. Ayres continues to give us excellent stories in each and every book.  If you like romance suspense, I suggest you read this series and start with the first book, though they do read well as standalones.

One Pink Rose by Julie Garwood – Review & Giveaway

One Pink Rose Banner

One Pink RoseAmazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / BAM

Description:
THE CLAYBORNES ARE BACK! AND LOVE IS IN BLOOM! — First introduced in Julie Garwood’s magnificent New York Times bestseller For the Roses, which inspired the Hallmark Hall of Fame television film Rose Hill, the Clayborne brothers of Blue Belle, Montana, have been embraced by millions worldwide. Now Julie Garwood spins the individual stories of these three spirited brothers — once a mismatched gang of street urchins — in a trio of special novels that begins with One Pink Rose.

Travis Clayborne may be the youngest of the Clayborne brothers, but he’s most definitely his own man. Unless it means saying no to his beloved Mama Rose. And that’s why Travis is escorting young Bostonian Emily Finnegan to Golden Crest, Montana — where she’ll discover what awaits her as a mail-order bride. Emily has made it perfectly clear that she’s taken charge of her destiny and nothing is going to interfere. Falling in love with the perfect stranger isn’t part of her plan, but the journey with Travis across this beautiful, rugged land opens her eyes… and her heart. Perhaps her destiny isn’t exactly as she imagined.

Review:

One Pink Rose by Julie Garwood is a sweet humorous historical romance. Even if you have not read the first book, For the Roses, this read very well as a standalone.  In the next two months, I will be reviewing the next two books in this series.

Travis Clayborne , our hero, is the youngest brother in the Clayborne family, who sets out to find the man who stole something from “Mama Rose”, and to honor his promise to escort a mail order bride to her destination. Emily Finnegan, our heroine, is the mail order bride, who is determined to bypass love and take charge of her own life.

When the two meet, Travis will be taken by surprise, as Emily, not knowing who he was, pulls out a revolver.  The banter between the two of them was fun, as they both could not agree on anything.  She was stubborn and righteous, and he was opinionated about why she would want to marry a man she never met.  As they travel to their destination point, their attraction to each other starts to heat up quickly, though both are determined not to let their feelings change anything.

What follows is a sweet romance, with a western background, a wonderful couple we rooted for, and some nice secondary characters, especially Jack.  When the time comes to meet her betrothed, Emily knows that she has fallen in love with Travis.  Will she stop her promised marriage?  Can Travis win her over?

This was not only a nice romance, but a lot of fun.  As we get closer to the end, there are some exciting parts that threaten both Emily and Travis. One Pink Rose was a nice read, which did have an old fashion feel, and a nice change to a pure romance.  If you love historical romances, something which Julie Garwood always did so well, then I suggest you read One Pink Rose.

Review:

I Let You Go by Clare Mackintosh is my first book by Mackintosh, and after reading this book, it will not be my last.  I Let You Go is an amazing psychological suspense thriller that had a few twists along the way that totally threw you for a loop.

The story begins on a rainy night, when a young boy on the way home from school, let’s go of his mother’s hand  to run toward his house, and a terrible tragedy occurs.  The impact of a hit and run which took the life of the young boy is the base of this story, which changes the lives of so many people.

In the aftermath, we meet Jenna, who is struggling with the tragedy, and decides to leave town, unable to handle the heartbreak or to hear the talk about the mother being at fault.  She gets on a bus to Wales, in a small town, cutting off ties to everyone.

We also meet Ray Stevens, who the detective handling the hit n run case.  Ray and his team try to find clues to the culprit, but there were no witnesses, making it almost impossible.  Ray is also upset that the mother has disappeared, leaving it even harder.  Kate is another detective, who works with Ray, and together they want to give the mother closure, if they can find the person resposible.  But their hands are tied, when management after a few months closes the case. Ray and Kate will work on their spare time to keep researching this case that has affected them both.

Jenna lives quietly in a remote cottage that is a bit run down.  She keeps to herself, only making a friend or two.  She now has a dog, Beau, who helps her when she is in the throes of her constant nightmares.  Eventually, Jenna will become acquainted with the local vet, Patrick, and a slow build romance will begin, though Jenna does not want any kind of relationship.  Patrick cares about Jenna, but senses her panic and fears.

What follows is a story that builds slowly, allowing us to meet the main characters, with both perspectives.  Everything changes about close to half way through this story that will shock you with a twist which will make you go back a few pages to see if you are reading this right.  This caught me by surprise, and my initial reaction was “What!”  Needless to say, this psychological thriller became so captivating that I could not put it down.  I had to know what was happening, and as I kept reading, there were more twists that blew my mind.  Every time I thought I finally figured it out, along comes another shocker.

To say too much more would be spoilers, as so much happens the rest of the way through this exciting tense thriller.  I will say that this is so well written.  The story was fascinating, holding your breath throughout, and all the characters were great, with the exception of the villain in this story.  If this is Clare Mackintosh’s debut novel, I must read anything else she will write. If you love psychological thrillers that will force you not to miss a word,  I wholly recommend you to read I Let You Go.  It is a do not miss.
