•••••••••••••

REVIEW: KILL OR BE KILT is the third installment in Victoria Roberts’s historical HIGHLAND SPIES Highland, romance series. This is Lady Elizabeth Walsingham, and Laird Ian Monroe’s storyline. KILL OR BE KILT can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty.

Told from several third person points of view KILL OR BE KILT is an adventure that takes the reader from the Highlands of Scotland to London, England. It is 1613, and King James sits on the throne of England; Lady Elizabeth’s Uncle Walter, who sat on the King’s Privy Council, has died a tragic death; and the Scottish Lairds including Ian, Ruairi and Fagan are hoping for a meeting with King James’s Court. When Elizabeth declares that she is going to the Court and not returning home following their Uncle’s demise, Laird Ian has no choice but to guard the young woman with his life. What ensues is a series of attacks against the members of the King’s Privy Council, while Ian struggles with his attraction to the woman in his charge.

Elizabeth has loved Laird Ian since the age of fifteen, but the intimidating Laird is almost twice her age, and Ian is a man with little experience at wooing a woman. Not that the man is inexperienced but for all intents and purposes, Ian makes mistake after mistake in his courtship with Elizabeth Walsingham. Ian will battle his attraction to Elizabeth only to discover that jealousy is not an emotion he is willing to feel when not one but two other males vie for Elizabeth’s affections. Several times Ian has chosen the coward’s way out, and found himself on the outside looking in. Meanwhile our heroine’s acerbic personality is a little over the top for a woman of her time.

KILL OR BE KILT has a large ensemble cast of supporting and secondary characters including Ruairi and Ravenna (My Highland Spy), Fagan and Grace (Kilts and Daggers), and Elizabeth’s youngest sister Lady Katherine, who at fifteen, has a lifelong friendship with Torquil. The world building continues focus on the tepid truce between Scotland and England; the political temperament of the times-betrayal, spies, assassinations and potential war; and of course a little bit of ‘enlightened’ history with the British monarchy.

KILL OR BE KILT is an historical love story with a little bit of mystery and suspense; humorous and funny moments as Ian is ‘schooled’ about his treatment of women; secrets and lies. The premise is entertaining and delightful; the characters are inspiring, imaginative and captivating; the romance is a struggle to the finish-Ian’s inability to please Elizabeth, and Elizabeth’s constant need to push everyone around.

Victoria Roberts Shares Interesting Facts about Scotland in the 1600s

Thank you so much for having me back at The Reading Café! It’s always a pleasure.

With the wild success of Outlander dominating tales about the 1700s-and with more medieval romances unleased to the world than I can count-not many Scottish historical authors write in the early 1600s. That’s exactly why I decided to write stories in this time period, and the Jacobean era continues to hold my interest today.

King James VI and I (Scotland/England/Ireland) was born on June 19, 1566. He was the son of Mary, Queen of Scots and great-great-grandson of Henry VIII. Those two facts alone are interesting to me. As a wee bairn, James succeeded to the Scottish throne at a mere 13-months-old. After Elizabeth I died without issue (no children) in 1603, James also became the ruler over England and Ireland until his death in 1625.

In the late 1500s, James became fascinated with witchcraft. He attended the North Berwick witch trials, which was the first major persecution of witches in Scotland under the Witchcraft Act of 1563. He also supervised the torture of women accused of practicing the dark arts. A visit to Denmark may have sparked his interest in the study of witchcraft, which he considered a branch of theology.

James was determined to establish a single country between Scotland and England with one monarch, one parliament and law. But both countries opposed his views. In 1604, the Commons refused to grant him the title “King of Great Britain.” But with great power comes great responsibility. (I think Spidey’s uncle said that.) James simply assumed the title by proclamation rather than by statute. That same year at Hampton Court Palace, a new compilation of approved books of the Bible was commissioned to resolve any discrepancies among the various translations. Hence the King James Version of the Bible was born and completed in 1611.

In 1605, the infamous Gunpowder Plot came into play. On the evening of the state opening, Guy Fawkes was discovered guarding a wood pile in the bowels of the parliament buildings. But beyond the pile of wood was 36 barrels of gunpowder that he had every intention of blowing up underneath Parliament House. This plot inspired my award-winning novel X Marks the Scot.

The statues of Iona were enacted in 1609, which required Highland lairds to send their heirs to the Lowlands to be educated in English speaking Protestant schools. James also requested the lairds report to Edinburgh to answer for their actions. He firmly believed Highlanders were void of knowledge and fear of God, nothing but barbarians. Therefore, he decided he wanted to abolish the Gaelic language and destroy traditional culture. As a result, several imprisonments followed for men like Patrick Stewart, the Earl of Orkney, and his son, who led an unsuccessful rebellion against James. I’ve used the king’s edict and Scottish uprisings as a basis for my books Temptation in a Kilt, My Highland Spy, Kilts and Daggers, and Kill or Be Kilt. His orders gave me great material to work with because there was a lot of strife between England and Scotland…still is today. This information is only the tip of the iceberg, and there’s still much left to explore. No matter what genre or time period you read, I hope you escape to the destination of your dreams.

Happy Reading!

Never Let You Go

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date May 3, 2016

Darkly sexy, emotional and forbidden, a woman unwittingly falls in love with the son of her abductor. The conclusion of a two-book contemporary romance series by New York Times bestselling author Monica Murphy.

Lies hurt. Lies destroy. I tried my best to understand why Ethan kept his secrets but it was so hard. Until I realized that I couldn’t deny myself any longer — I needed to be with him. We needed each other. Despite my family’s wariness, the media’s fascination with us, the fact that his father still has a stranglehold on our lives, we belong together. No matter what. I will never let Ethan go. But sometimes love destroys us too, and we’re too weak to banish the demons. Especially when our demons are determined to ruin us.

•••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: NEVER LET YOU GO is the second installment in Monica Murphy’s NEVER TEAR US APART contemporary, new adult duology focusing on Katie Watts, and Will ‘Ethan’ Monroe. NEVER LET YOU GO should not be read as a stand alone as it continues upon the events of book one-Never Tear Us Apart.

SOME BACKGROUND: Eight years earlier, at twelve years old, Katie Watts was kidnapped, raped and held prisoner by a serial murderer, only to be rescued by her attacker’s fifteen year old son. Fast forward to present day, where Katie and Will are reunited and must, once again, fight to escape the monsters –but this time it is the media, Katie’s family, and a reporter who is desperate for their story.

Told from several first person points of view (Will, Katie, Aaron), and a lone third person (Lisa), NEVER LET YOU GO focuses on the struggling relationship between Katie and Will. Will has been in love with Katie since the day of her rescue, but both are battling demons from the past. As the story line unfolds, a reporter continues to stalk our couple in the hopes of an exclusive interview, while someone else behind the scenes is pulling the strings. We are witness to the guilt, the memories, and the unforgettable circumstances of how they met and came to be. The roller coaster ride of the relationship is kept hidden until the media becomes aware of their present circumstances. There are monsters in the dark, and some of them are real.

NEVER LET YOU GO follows Katie’s family – they have never been able to come to terms with what happened to Katie, and the affects of the attention has had upon their lives. Katie feels victimized once again by Will’s lies and omissions of the truth; his betrayal to the now twenty year old Katie finds our heroine struggling with her emotions and her heart. Will Monroe eventually separated himself from the man he called dad, and became a man who existed without the woman he once loved. His eight year search for Katie finds Will caught between the lies, and wanting to give Katie his heart.

NEVER LET YOU GO begins with a note from the author regarding the subject matter but in all fairness, the details about the rape are absent, behind the scenes, and referenced where necessary. At no point does the author step into graphic text or haunting scenarios. Some readers may have issues with the story line subject. The premise is thrilling and tense; the characters are determined, engaging and somewhat tragic; the romance is fated and heartwarming.

Description:
Powerful prince Malcolm is facing ruin in the wake of a curse that has destroyed his harvest. He blames the band nomadic Móndyalítko who summer in the meadow below his castle—and he is determined to root out the people who caused the blight by any means necessary.

When Céline and Amelie Fawe, descended from the Móndyalítko, learn that their mother’s people are under suspicion of sabotage and treason, they set out to use their magical gifts to save their estranged relatives and learn about their own origins.

Now it’s up to the sisters—along with their motley escort, including a prince’s lieutenant, a shape-shifter, and an old woman with a murky past—to discover the source of the curse to restore life to the ravaged land and protect the innocent from unfair vengeance.

Review:

To Kill a Kettle Witch by Barb Hendee is the 4th book in her Mist Torn Witches series.  I have enjoyed every book in this series, and Hendee continues the trend with another wonderful story.   Celine and Amelie Fawe, two sisters that are Mist-Torn witches, who are seers.  Just by holding a person’s hand, Celine can see the future and Amelie can see the past.  They live in Seone, under the protection of Prince Anton.  In the previous books, both of them helped solve mysteries in dangerous situations.  In To Kill a Kettle Witch, they are asked to help their deceased mother’s family, who have been accused of destroying Prince Malcolm’s land and harvest.  No one is allowed to leave Malcom’s land until the person behind the destruction is found.

Despite Prince Anton’s disapproval, Celine and Amelie are determined to go help the family they have never met; with Helga, Jaromir and Marcus making the trip with them.  When they arrive on Prince Malcom’s territory, they are welcomed by the Fawe family, which includes their mother’s sister.  Jaromir meets with Prince Malcom to explain that they are there to help him find the Kettle Witch who is destroying his land.  What follows is an interesting and exciting story that will have both Amelie and Celine stumped almost to the end, as to who is behind the curse.  During their attempt to find the culprit, there is a villain who is after Celine, who will endanger them all.  Celine will also be caught in the middle of Marcus’s attempt to woo her, but she only cares about Anton.  We hope one day Celine & Anton will find a way to be together despite her being a commoner and him being the Prince.  I do love Celine and Anton, who really had a small part in this book.  Marcus was a good guy, who also protected Celine during this trip.

The last 1/3 of the book was exciting, and had a few twists, which were very surprising.  This was unexpected, but we suspected the truth once we went into Amelie’s flashback on one person.  I also loved the progression of Amelie and Jaromir’s relationship, and hope these two will also find a way to make this work.  Barb Hendee has given us another wonderful story revolving around Celine and Amelie and their ability to see the future or past.  I love this series, and I want to see more, especially the romances for both ladies.  I totally recommend you read this series, and suggest you start with the first book, in order to learn this world and the budding relationships evolving.

Interview

Hi Barb. Thank you for taking the time to answer some questions today. We are always looking forward to reading about the author behind the book.

TRC:  Would you please tell us something about yourself?

Barb:  I live in northwest Oregon with my husband and writing partner, J.C. We have a funky little two-level townhouse that feels kind of like a cabin on the inside. There is a large patio area for gardening. I love cooking and gardening. I love to be home.  In addition to writing novels, I teach writing for two different community colleges, but I teach entirely online . . . so I can work from home. Hah!

TRC: Have you always been interested in writing? When and how did you first start writing?

Barb:  The first question is tough for me to answer because I don’t really know how long I’ve been interested in writing. I think I was fifteen or so before I realized that not everyone had characters and stories constantly playing out in their heads. I thought everyone did.

I started college a little later than most people (I was twenty-six), and that’s when I started writing short stories and sending them out. I sold the third story I ever wrote to a magazine called After Hours, and then I sold my next piece to Cemetery Dance for professional rates.

I kept writing, but later, I came to realize that I was not a short story writer by nature—and that the novel length came more naturally to me. J.C. and I wrote Dhampir in 2001 and sold it Ace/Roc.

TRC:  To Kill a Kettle Witch is the 4th book in your Mist Torn Witches series.  Can you please tell us about the premise of this series? How many books are you planning for this series?

Barb:  In 2012, I showed my editor a proposal for a series of novels that would mix traditional fantasy with murder mystery elements and a hint of romance. She loved it and made an offer.

The Mist-Torn Witches series was born (smiles).

The novels surround two sisters, Céline and Amelie Fawe. Céline can read snippets of the future, and Amelie can read snippets of the past. They live in a dark world of warlords who all call themselves “princes.” A personal crisis leads the sisters to solve a string of unexplainable murders for one of the princes, and they end up inextricably tied to him and his over-protective lieutenant.

This series is great fun to write, and I always look forward to the time of year when I need to begin the next book. At present, book four is the last one for which I’ve been contracted, but I’m hoping to write two more.

TRC:  Can you please give us a brief description of To Kill a Kettle Witch?

Barb:  Oh sure. Céline and Amelie know very little about their deceased mother’s past. In this novel, they learn that they have a large extended family who has run into trouble down in the southeast part of the nation. These people are accused of cursing the land and killing the crops, and as a result, they are being held prisoner.  Céline asks Prince Anton for permission for herself and Amelie to leave—to go and try to help these family members they never knew existed. Of course he refuses. Hah! Céline gives him an ultimatum, and he gives in.  So, Céline, Amelie, Helga (a friend), Lieutenant Jaromir, and a shape-shifting wolf named Marcus all head southeast to try and solve a mystery. They have no idea what they’re walking into.

TRC:  You write multiple genres, such as Fantasy & Paranormal.   Have you ever considered writing other genres?

Barb:  Indeed I have! My agent is currently shopping a Victorian romance novel I wrote. We’ll see what happens (smiles).

TRC:  Can you please tell us what you working on now, and what you have upcoming in 2016/2017?

Barb:  I am very excited about a project coming out in January 2016. JC and I have contracted for a new series set in the same world as the Noble Dead Saga: The Dead Seekers. This is an entirely new series—with new characters. We’ve seen the cover for the first novel already, and it’s gorgeous! The series surrounds an anti-social ghost hunter named Tris, and his shape-shifter of a partner, Mari (she’s a lynx). After writing fourteen Noble Dead books together, I must say, we had a lot of fun working on something new.

TRC:  What is your writing process?  Do you like to outline your story before you start? Do you have a specific place you like to write?  Is there a special time of day that works best for you?

Barb:   I’m a binge writer. When I’m “in the zone,” I’m drinking coffee and hammering away by 6:30 in the morning. The hard part about this is that I do need a block of time though. I’m not one those lucky writers who do three pages a day. I need to get the whole thing out of my head. This means that when I’m writing, I need to schedule the rest of my life pretty carefully. I wrote the first novel in The Mist-Torn Witches series in thirty-four days.  I loosened three of the keys on my MacBook Pro, and one of the guys at the Apple Genius bar had to replace them for me.  I tend to outline the first three chapters, and then I just start writing. Of course the process is very different when I’m working with J.C. With him, we need an extensive outline because there are two people working on the same book. I draft, and he comes behind me to revise, but we have to plan the story together first.

TRC:  When you are not writing, what other interests or hobbies do you have?

Barb:  J.C. and I live with two cats (sisters) who on the verge of celebrating their 4th birthday. We brought them home as kittens when they were eight weeks old, and we trained them on harnesses. So, one of the things we love to do is take our cats for walks.

With her time in Cricket Creek, Kentucky, coming to an end, hair stylist Sophia Gordon can’t deny the town’s charms, or her attraction to Avery Dean. That’s why she finds herself saying yes to dinner, and then, a wedding date.

Sophia agrees to be Avery’s pretend girlfriend until the big day is over, but when their make-believe fling shows signs of real passion, Sophia starts to wonder if staying in Cricket Creek could make all her wishes come true.

Review:

Wish Upon a Wedding by LuAnn McLane is the 10th book in her wonderful Cricket Creek series. I am a big fan of this series by McLane.  In each and every book, she manages to give us another sweet romance; a great couple, and spending time with those we have grown to love in Cricket Creek.

Sophia Gordon is due to leave Cricket Creek to return to NY, but after enjoying the small town atmosphere, seeing her family settle there, and the friends she found has caused her to have second thoughts.  Avery Dean is our hero, who recently broke up with his fiancée, who had cheated on him.  To get his sister Zoe off his back, he and Sophia, who have become friends, devise a plan to pretend to be dating, so his ex leaves him alone. Best laid plans; as usual do not always work out.

Sophia was a great heroine, always fun and likable, except when talking to Avery’s ex, Ashley.  Sophia will decide to stay in Cricket Creek, as she will go into business with her friend Carrie Ann, opening a  salon, White Laces and Promises,  on Wedding Row.  Carrie Ann also has a new romance quickly building with Avery’s uncle Easton.  Slowly, both Avery and Sophia begin realize that their pretend relationship has become real.  With Zoe and Max’s upcoming wedding, Ashley is part of the wedding party, as is Avery, and the misguided attempts by Zoe (who doesn’t know the real reason about his breakup with Ashley), will make things uncomfortable.   Will Sophia be able to stop the attempts by Ashley to win Avery back?  Will Avery get past his fears of being hurt again?

This was a double sweet story of two wonderful romances.  The extra added fun of seeing our previous couples in Cricket Creek always makes this a pleasure to read.   I loved both Avery and Sophia, as they made a fun, likable, sweet and sexy couple.   The older couple, Carrie Ann and Easton was also very well done. Once again, I had fun in Cricket Creek, and think it’s time you meet these wonderful people, in case you haven’t done so yet. Looking forward to visiting Cricket Creek again soon. If you love sweet small town romances, you can never go wrong reading anything by LuAnn McLane.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date May 3, 2016

She was off limits,
But he couldn’t resist.

There are just some guys you don’t touch–even someone as innocent and inexperienced as Ella Shaw knows that. But when her brother’s best friend is up for grabs and willing, she can’t resist. After all, she’s wanted him for years…

On leave from the army, Tyler Dare is just looking for a little fun, but his best friend’s sister is off limits. Yet unable to deny how sexy and alluring she is, he finds it all too easy to succumb to a night of passion and heat that ends the next morning in the worst way possible.

Now, Ella is stranded on a tropical island with a hurricane bearing down, and only Tyler can save her. It’s his chance to make amends for the past and show the woman he’s never forgotten that he’s coming after her . . . in more ways than one.

••••••••••••

REVIEW: DARE TO TAKE is the sixth and final installment in Carly Phillips DARE TO LOVE adult, contemporary, erotic romance series focusing on the Dare siblings. This is former US soldier/security specialist Tyler Dare, and PA Ella Shaw’s second chance storyline. DARE TO TAKE can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from previous story lines is revealed where necessary.

SOME BACKGROUND: Patriarch and hotel billionaire Robert Dare kept secret a second family from his first wife and children until a medical emergency forced Robert to reveal the existence of family number two. Each storyline will focus on one of the Dare siblings; the relationship between the two families of adult children; and a father who may or may not be trying to amend for the sins of the past.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Tyler and Ella) DARE TO TAKE looks at rebuilding a friendship when a one night stand years before between Tyler and Ella found our heroine heartbroken and destroyed, and Tyler running away before the morning light. Fast forward to present day where we find Ella trapped on a tropical island, a hurricane on the horizon, and a mugging that leaves Ella without her personal possessions and in need of a hospital rescue. Enter Tyler Dare, the man of her dreams, but a man possessed by guilt from the past. Upon their return home, Ella is once again targeted by an unknown source, and Tyler enlists the help of a friend to seek out the truth about the attack against Ella-both at home and back in St.Lucia.

The relationship between Ella and Tyler is one of second chances. Ella has always had a crush on her best friend’s brother, but her one night with Tyler proved she wasn’t worthy of Tyler’s love. Her self-esteem shattered, Ella has always walked carefully whenever Tyler was anywhere near, and things haven’t changed in the ensuing years. But her current dilemma finds Ella in Tyler’s care, and the desires from the past become part of their present. The $ex scenes are intimate, erotic and provocative.

Most of the Dare siblings play secondary and supporting roles as the family gives birth to the next generation, and the sins of the past are revisited once again. The world building continues to focus on family; the dysfunctional nature of betrayal and lies; and a look towards the future. The premise is romantic and fateful with a little bit of mystery and suspense; the characters are dynamic and spirited; the romance is passionate and driven.

DARE TO TAKE is the final installment in Carly’s DARE TO LOVE series but that doesn’t mean the stories have to end. There is a spin off series –BILLIONAIRE BAD BOYS- and the first installment will feature billionaire Kaden Barnes in GOING DOWN EASY. Kaden is introduced in Dare to Take.

excerpt

The sun shone overhead, the temperature neared ninety, and the humidity was hair-curlingly high on the Caribbean island of St. Lucia, making it hard to believe a hurricane was coming soon. Ella Shaw glanced up at the blue sky, knowing it wouldn’t remain pristine for long.
The calm before the storm.
She pulled her hair into a high ponytail and headed out of her hotel, determined to hit the local gift shop she’d caught sight of on her way to the photo shoot yesterday. She’d seen long, draping, blue-beaded necklaces from the storefront window, but she hadn’t had time to stop. Her boss was a stickler for getting the right shot in the exact light, and they’d worked well past dark. By the time they’d wrapped for the day, the store had been closed.
As an assistant for Angie Crighton, a fashion designer based in Miami, Ella was responsible for the little details involved in a photo shoot. And though Angie, the photographer, and models had left the island this morning, Ella had stayed to make sure the shooting site was clean, the hotel pleased enough to allow them back another time. And if she were honest with herself, she liked the downtime after the craziness of a photo shoot, the rushing around of the crew, the bossiness of some of the models and, of course, of Angie herself.
Ella appreciated the fact that she had time to souvenir shop for her best friend, Avery Dare. How ironic was it that the two girls from very different worlds had met at all? But they had. And it was Avery who’d introduced Ella to the finer things in life, leading her to seek out a job with an haute-couture designer. Whereas Avery came from a wealthy family, Ella had been raised firmly middle class, but the two girls had bonded instantly. They’d even shared an apartment until recently, when her best friend had moved in with her rock star boyfriend, Grey Kingston.
Yep, two different worlds, even now, Ella thought wryly. But their friendship was solid. Which reminded her, she needed to let Avery know she might not make it back to the States tomorrow as planned.
When Ella had heard about the storm changing course, she’d tried to book an earlier flight out, without success. She shivered at the possibility of being stranded here alone during a hurricane and knew Avery would like the news even less. Her best friend suffered from severe anxiety, and Ella didn’t like to make her worry.
She’d just buy Avery an extra gift to make up for it, she thought, walking into the shop. She immediately headed to the turquoise-blue beads she’d seen through the window. The shopkeeper claimed they were Larimar beads. Even if they were fake, the beads, popular in the Caribbean, were said to have healing powers. Ella purchased two dozen, a mix of bracelets and necklaces, so she could share with the children at the cancer treatment center where she and Avery volunteered.
Avery had been nine, Ella ten years old when they’d met at a Miami hospital, both donating bone marrow, both there at the behest of a parent. Neither of them really understanding what was happening. All Ella had known was that she was doing a favor for her father, helping the stepmother Ella didn’t like all that much to begin with. Even at a young age, Ella had been a good judge of character, a better one than her father, obviously, because shortly after Janice had gotten well, she’d left Ella’s dad. And both her father and Ella’s life had gone downhill from there. Ella shook off the thoughts of her past before she could go deeper and darker, and focused on the pretty jewelry.
She spent some time choosing a thick turquoise bracelet for Avery and a similar one for herself before paying for everything and waiting for the shopkeeper to wrap things up.
Bag in hand, she started back to the hotel, cutting through side streets and looking into the windows of the stores, soaking up the culture along the cobblestone streets before heading back to Miami tomorrow. At least, she still hoped she’d be home. Knowing she couldn’t change the outcome, she pushed her worrisome thoughts aside. She’d deal with the situation as it came.
Sweat dampened her neck from the humidity of the island, and she contemplated taking a cab back to the hotel. She reached into her straw bag and pulled out her cell phone to make the call, when, without warning, she felt a hard jerk on her purse.
“What the—?” She spun around, but whomever wanted her purse was quicker.
She barely caught a glimpse of a tall guy with dark hair as he yanked harder, nearly pulling her shoulder out of its socket before slamming her against the nearby building with his other hand.
Her head hit the concrete wall, and spots immediately appeared behind her eyes from the impact. As she struggled not to pass out, the man grabbed her purse, along with her cell phone that had fallen to the ground.
She opened her mouth to scream, but nothing came out. Her legs collapsed beneath her, and she fell to the ground, her head smacking the sidewalk before everything went black.

Q and A

A few quick questions with Carly Phillips

TRC: Hi Carly and welcome to The Reading Cafe. Congratulations on the release of DARE TO TAKE

We would like to start with some background information. Would you please tell us something about yourself?

Carly: I loved being a student, went to college and law school but hated practicing law and the real world. I’m more of an introvert and that career nearly did me in. I became a mom and then started writing what I loved reading, which was / is Romance. I’ve always been an avid reader and happily ever after is my thing. I am happily married to my college sweetheart, I have 2 nearly adult daughters, 3 crazy dogs and I’m always online and love talking to readers there!

TRC: Who or what influenced your career in writing?

Carly: Reading. I always read … and hated non-happy endings. Once I discovered the Romance genre, I was so, so happy. Writing came very soon after. I loved LaVyrle Spencer back when I started out. ☺

TRC: What challenges or difficulties have you encountered writing and publishing your stories?

Carly: I first started writing in the days before self-publishing so REJECTION and a lot of it. I had to believe in myself so that I could pick up and move on after each one.

TRC: Would you please tell us something about DARE TO TAKE and the Dare to Love series?

Carly: The Dare to Love series is about siblings shaped by a father’s betrayal. Robert Dare had 2 families and when a daughter in his “other/illegitimate” family became sick and needed a bone marrow transplant, the truth came out so the others could get tested to see if they were a match. One legitimate child was. The Dare to Love books tell about the now adult children and how that one selfish act shaped everyone’s lives. How they find love afterwards.

Dare to Take is Tyler Dare’s story. I’m (for now) wrapping up the series as Tyler is the last legitimate sibling whose story needs telling. The NY Dare cousins are all told. And I need fresh inspiration so I’m starting a new series after. Tyler and his sister’s best friend have a secret … he took her virginity and they’ve been fighting that attraction ever since. Ella is stranded after being mugged on an island and his sister begs him to go save her – not knowing their history. It’s fun (or is it?) from there! ☺

TRC: There is a fine line between romance, erotic, and erotica in many of today’s popular contemporary fiction. What do you believe accounts for the differences between the sub-genres in today’s romantic stories?

Carly: That’s a hard one. For me, erotic romance just pushes sexual boundaries on contemporary hot romance. Erotica doesn’t have the happy ending, monogamy that all Romance has. At least that’s my definition of the differences.

TRC: Thank you Carly for taking the time to answer our questions. We wish you all the best.

•••••••••

REVIEW: BIG EASY TEMPTATION is the third installment in Shayla Black and Lexi Blake’s adult, contemporary The Perfect Gentlemen erotic, romantic suspense series focusing on six friends –Gabe, Connor, Dax, Zach, Roman and Maddox. This is Naval Officer Daxton ‘Dax’ Spencer, and NCIS agent Holland Kirk’s story line. BIG EASY TEMPTATION should not be read as a standalone as the continuing series focuses on the death of several people close to the Perfect Gentlemen, and the search for the truth.

SOME BACKGROUND: Following the mysterious airplane crash and subsequent death of their friend Maddox Crawford, the remaining friends Gabe Bond, Dax Spencer, Connor Sparks, Roman and US president Zach Hayes finds themselves searching for the truth that somehow involves the Russian mob and the deaths of a number of people connected to their group known as The Perfect Gentlemen. THE PERFECT GENTLEMEN series are their stories

Told from dual third person perspectives (Dax and Holland), following three different timelines, BIG EASY TEMPTATION focuses on the rekindling of the relationship between Dax and Holland once destroyed by secrets and lies. With the mysterious death of his father, ruled a suicide, and the subsequent reopening of the investigation, Dax Spencer finds himself in the Big Easy-New Orleans-working with the woman who has stolen his heart. Holland Kirk is an investigator with the NCIS, and the death of Dax’s father was a closed case as far as the service was concerned. But Dax has never been able to let go of the past, and believes his father’s death was something more. What ensues is the further investigation into the elder Spencer’s death, and the threats aimed at Holland and Dax as they get too close to the truth.

The relationship between Dax and Holland is one of second and third chances. Years before Dax immediately fell for Holland Kirk-a woman on the fast track to joining the Navy’s NCIS but a woman who knew the history and tabloid ramblings about the Perfect Gentlemen and their conquest of lovers and scandals. Fast forward several years wherein our couple will work together investigating the suicide of Dax’s father only to fall victim to betrayals and lies. Present day will find our couple, once again, joining forces to uncover the truth, but a truth that will threaten everyone that they love. The sizzling chemistry and burning attraction between our leading couple is palpable but the elephant in the room may be too much to overcome. The $ex scenes are intimate, intense and seductive.

The world building continues to focus on the conspiracy and investigation into a series of unexplained deaths surrounding the Perfect Gentlemen and the people they love. From Washington DC to New Orleans to Russia, the Perfect Gentlemen search for the truth, and the connection to their friend- US president Zach Hayes-and the Russian mob. We get up close and personal into the private lives of six friends whose life of privilege is tainted by scandal and deceit.

BIG EASY TEMPTATION is a fantastic read; a suspense filled story where life long friends have been targeted in a game involving cold war enemies, and the potential fall out of betrayal and revenge. Long buried secrets and lies have come to the surface, and the Perfect Gentlemen have been caught in the battle of their lives. The premise is thrilling and enticing; the characters are engaging and dynamic; the romance is a second chance at a happily ever after. Shayla Black and Lexi Blake add a fascinating and spell-binding addition to The Perfect Gentlemen series.

Big Easy Temptation teaser

excerpt

She emerged from the bathroom as he approached. Her eyes widened when she caught sight of him, but she settled back into her calm and collected persona. “Are you ready to go?”
So polite. He wanted to get past that genteel surface and find the passionate woman he knew lay underneath. “I’m ready for a lot of things, Holland. Most of all, I’m ready to finish what we started all those years ago.”
She backed up, her body hitting the wall behind her. “What are you talking about?”
Oh, she knew exactly what he was talking about, but he could make it clear to her. “I never got to finish that kiss. My father interrupted us.”
Holland shook her head, but she was looking at his mouth. Her breath had gone shallow. “We finished. And I walked away.”
He moved closer, crowding her. “I definitely didn’t get my fill, sweetheart. Maybe if I had, you wouldn’t have left. I think it’s time we fixed that problem.”
Dax leaned in slowly, giving her the opportunity to protest. He’d never force her . . . but persuasion was something else entirely.
“Tell me you don’t want me to kiss you right here, right now.”
“You know I can’t,” she whispered.
That was what he wanted to hear. He braced his hand against the wall above her head and hovered close, breathing in her scent. She smelled like ripe peaches and something so her. It thrilled his senses.
Slowly, he reached for the soft skin of her face and cupped it. “I never stopped thinking about you. Not once, Holland. I don’t think I’m capable of forgetting you.”
“This is a mistake.” She breathed the words onto his lips, their mouths drawing ever closer. “It can’t end well.”
He closed the remaining distance between them and brushed his lips over hers, giving her a taste of what was to come. “It can if we make it. We choose our fates.”
He would make his marriage work. Together, they would have children who always felt loved and never worried that their parents didn’t put them and each other first.
Dax deepened the kiss, sliding his tongue over her plump bottom lip and thrilling when she shuddered. Her trembling hands skated up his torso as she pressed their bodies closer and kissed him harder. Then she opened her mouth and he felt the slide of her tongue against his.
Pure fire threatened to consume him. Usually, he took his time and worked up to sex, but the feel of this woman in his arms made him rough and ready in a heartbeat. He wanted to shove her against the wall and thrust his cock deep. Take her. His whole being screamed out to claim her once and for all.
He pinned her to the wall, covering her body with his as he prolonged the kiss. With greedy palms, he hugged her curves, then settled on her waist and pulled her hard against him. He hated the clothing between them, wanted nothing more than to feel her silky flesh.
“Dax, we shouldn’t,” she breathed against his mouth.
“Stop thinking. Feel. Feel how much I want you, Holland.” He pressed his pelvis against hers. It wasn’t a gentlemanly thing to do, but he couldn’t be polite with her. She brought out the caveman in him. He wanted to mark her, to let everyone else know this one woman was his.
He silenced her with his kiss, delving deep again. Her fingers clung to his shoulders as her body molded to his, fitting together. Chest to chest. Belly to belly. His erection nestled against her pussy.
Could he take her in the bathroom? He had a condom. All he needed was a few minutes of privacy to ease the ache they were both suffering. But as much as he wanted her, Dax couldn’t fathom that his first time with Holland would be in a public john. She deserved better. So did they.
As he forced himself to ease back, an unfamiliar voice drifted down the hall. “If you’ll come this way, we’ll take a peek into the private dining room.”
Holland gasped at the intrusion and shoved at him. Dax stared at her flushed cheeks and swollen lips, a ribbon of satisfaction winding through him.
“As you can plainly see, Antoine’s is noted for its romantic environment. Like everything here in New Orleans, we keep it spicy,” the male voice said again.
Dax grimaced when he noticed a group of tourists taking one of the food and wine tours conducted daily throughout the city. As the group passed, Holland looked even more flustered. Obviously, she hadn’t been caught in many compromising positions before. Luckily he had.
Dax stepped in front of her and nodded to the guide as he walked past.
“Y’all have a nice night in the Quarter,” he said with a smile.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date May 3, 2016

Wolf shifter and park ranger Eric Silver is committed to his job policing spectacular San Isabel National Forest, and he’s hot on the scent of some mysterious wolves who are up to no good. When Eric’s investigation leads him to cross paths with forester Pepper Grayling, he’s fascinated to learn this she-wolf is her pack’s leader — strong, independent, and definitely not looking for a mate.

With unknown dangers on the prowl, Pepper is tempted to give in to her attraction to Eric and align her pack with his. But Pepper’s been pursued by many alpha males–all out to take over her pack and gain her hard-won territory–and Eric is a born leader. How does Eric earn the trust of a she-wolf who’s been betrayed so often in the past?

•••••••••••••••

REVIEW: ALPHA WOLF NEED NOT APPLY is the nineteenth installment in Terry Spear’s HEART OF THE WOLF paranormal, romance series. This is park ranger/alpha male and Silvertown wolf Eric Silver, and forester/alpha female/pack leader Pepper Grayling’s story. ALPHA WOLF NEED NOT APPLY can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from previous story line is revealed where necessary.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Eric and Pepper) ALPHA WOLF NEED NOT APPLY follows the building relationship between Eric and Pepper. While Eric is on patrol, investigating a possible marijuana grow-op, our hero is attacked by several unknown wolf shifters, and finds himself an unwelcome guest of another wolf pack where one of its’ own is injured and needing help. Enter Pepper Grayling, the alpha female and leader of the pack, and the wolf that calls to Eric’s heart. But….Pepper is an independent she-wolf who blames herself for the loss of her last mate, and refuses to get involved with any alpha wolves looking to take over her pack. She is reticent, wary, distrustful and reluctant to expose her pack to another alpha male. What ensues is a battle for domination, land, and the heart of the female alpha.

ALPHA WOLF NEED NOT APPLY is a slow building story line that reveals some of the background of Pepper’s struggles with her pack; the loss of her previous mate; and the connection to the current conflict and battle for the pack. She is a strong leader; ever vigilant; and concerned for the safety of the people she loves. There is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters, including several shifters who threaten both Eric and Pepper’s lives, their packs, and their possible future. I did enjoy the time spent with both packs when Eric and Pepper introduced the shifters to one another. Ever competitive, the alpha wolves battle one another for domination at beach volleyball !
Terry Spear’s HEART OF THE WOLF is a captivating, entertaining an enjoyable series. Her heroes are sexy and passionate; the heroines seductive and strong. ALPHA WOLF NEED NOT APPLY is a spirited story with colorful characters in a world to heighten your imagination. If you are a fan of shifter romance, why not give Terry Spear’s HEART OF THE WOLF series a try.

A Message from Terry

During the writing of Alpha Wolf Need Not Apply, I made trips to several wolf reserves. As soon as I saw the sign for Mexican gray wolves near Albuquerque, I wanted to drive there and see them. So before we made our return trip home, we did.

To take care of Mexican gray wolves, a facility has to have special permission. They’re much rarer, but they’re much like their cousins in the north. I have to admit I loved seeing all the animals, but I was anxious to see the Mexican gray wolves at play. In my stories, I always include some kind of play time for my wolves, because it’s a way for them to show hierarchy, and a way for them to do what they do in the wild, train to take down their prey. In captivity, it’s somewhat different. When they heard a truck coming, that instantly meant food to them. No one came with food, but the wolves started to race around the fence and play with each other, and that made it fun for us.

Another wolf was isolated in her own fenced-in area. Why? Oftentimes, wolves like to be with a pack. They’re pack animals. But sometimes they grow too old and can’t manage the younger wolves who are in charge, maybe once having been in charge themselves. In one wildlife center in Minnesota, that was the case with one of their wolves. He had been retired. No showing off to visitors to the zoo. No mixing with the wolf pack that consisted of two brothers, the one male being the alpha, and a sister and brother, the female being the alpha by default. Though as feisty as she was, I was certain that if another wolf was introduced, she’d still be the alpha.

In a case in Texas, all the wolf dogs or wolves had “mates.” They don’t actually breed the wolves, only offer them a companion. But one wouldn’t accept a mate. She was a real beta with humans, full Arctic wolf, but put another wolf or wolfdog in with her and she was a terror.

In another case, this one in Nebraska, a wolf was being confined until he was more used to the environment. Once he was, he was allowed into the enclosure with the rest of the wolves and he became the alpha. When we were there, they said they had fifteen pups, seven yearlings and eight younger pups, but everyone was hiding, it was summer, so it was hot, which made it hard to see any of them.

And that’s the thing of doing research on wolves. You can’t always expect to go once and see the wolves out playing just for you. We spent all day at the one in Ely, Minnesota, recording and watching and asking questions of the staff. The wolves would disappear and sleep for long periods, then finally return and play or sleep where we could see them.

In a Wisconsin zoo, the two wolves never made an appearance. One of the personnel said that the wolves only came out early to play and would come out at night. They were around twelve years old, so tired old wolves. Which is totally understandable.

When we were at a different wolf reserve in Minnesota, they had said that they would have to separate wolves out if they had trouble between wolves. The one pack had a total of twelve wolves in it, the largest pack we saw in captivity that remained together.

The Mexican gray wolf that was isolated from the others has her own story to tell. I like to think she just needed her space, or she is waiting to find her perfect mate. What do you think?

excerpt

Pepper Grayling couldn’t believe it when she heard two wolves fighting in the woods. She’d caught a glimpse of both male wolves, the snarling, big tan and gray that bit at Waldron Mason, and Waldron himself, a beige wolf with a white front and a smattering of gray hairs. The mystery wolf had snapped at Waldron before he raced off. The way he didn’t tuck tail meant he wasn’t cowed by the aggressor. And that had intrigued her.
She was furious that Waldron was pulling her away from her own pack to deal with him when she wanted to ensure Susan was properly cared for. As quickly as she was able, she stripped off her clothes, shifted, and ran like the devil to chase Waldron down. Whoever the other wolf had been, he had posed no threat to them. When she ran after the two wolves, she smelled their scents. The mystery wolf was indeed Eric Silver. No way would she want Waldron to hurt Eric after he’d helped Susan!
She was so angry, she could have killed Waldron for his unwarranted actions.
When she spied Waldron still chasing after Eric, she tore into him, growling and snapping to let him know just how angry he’d made her. He whipped around as if to attack, then recognized her and realized that by attacking, he’d lose any chance of courting and mating her—not that he had any—so he backed off. From his narrow-eyed, harsh gaze, she could tell he was irritated to the max with her. If he could have, he would have continued to hunt the other wolf down and finished him off. She worried about Eric—she smelled his blood on Waldron. How badly had Waldron hurt him?
But she knew Eric had been injured even before this because she’d smelled both an antiseptic and blood on him when she first met him.
She listened but didn’t hear any sign of Eric. Growling at Waldron again, she turned and ran off. She continued to pay attention to the sounds around her, making sure he wasn’t following her back to their campsite. She didn’t want to have to say a word to him about any of this when she reached camp. All she wanted to do was see that her cousin Susan was taken care of.
When she didn’t hear Waldron following her, she wondered if he had gone back after Eric.
As for Eric, she already had trouble with one alpha male wanting to court her. She sure didn’t need a second one bugging her, if Eric had any such notion. Still, she felt bad that Waldron had attacked him, and she really hoped he wasn’t hurt too seriously.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date May 3, 2016

To save her, he had to betray her…

In Drake’s shadowy world, his enemies would exploit any weakness he had in order to bring him to his knees, and so he’s never allowed himself to care about anyone…never exhibited any vulnerability, and it made him a force to be reckoned with. Until Evangeline—his angel. A woman who slipped past his defenses like no one had ever managed. She was his to protect and ultimately, to do that, he had to do the unthinkable and drive the only good thing in his world away.

But he will stop at nothing to get her back…

Devastated and destroyed, Evangeline doesn’t know what made Drake turn on her in such a shocking manner. She only knows she’ll never be the same. He once freed her from all her inhibitions, only now she is a prisoner to never-ending pain. But when Drake finds her again, she realizes there is more to his world than she ever imagined, and she must decide if she can once more trust—and submit—to the man who holds her wounded heart in his hands. And he must convince her of just how far he’ll go to regain her love and forgiveness.

REVIEW:

Dominated begins right where Mastered leaves off…………with a HUGE cliffhanger. As the blurb about the book says “to save her, he had to betray her….”and boy, did he ever betray her. Feeling utterly betrayed and humiliated, Evangeline runs away and hides from Drake. She just can’t understand why he had treated her that way in front of his business associates. She’d done everything to make him proud of her and to, for lack of a better analogy, “earn her keep”. Somehow, things had gone terribly wrong and she found herself with no money and nowhere to go, until an unexpected ally steps in and helps. The place she’s staying is humble, but she’s working to save a little money so that she can get back home.

To say Drake is crazy with worry about Evangeline is a huge understatement. He’s tried to track her down, but to no avail. His men are upset as well. Upset that she’s missing and even more upset at what sent her running in the first place. Seems Drake has a lot to make up for.

Drake finally tracks her down and finally gets her to understand what happened and how sorry he is. Of course, she forgives him and vows to try and make a life with him, but he has to meet her part way. He gives his word that he will. Funny thing about giving your word………you actually have to keep it. What follows will have you cheering for Evangeline (most of the time) and wanting to kill Drake (a lot of the time). As they navigate their relationship and the problems that come with Drake’s complicated life, one thing is for sure: Drake is in for a rude awakening. He’s never felt as out of control as he does with Evangeline, and he’s never been questioned by his inner circle, until now.

I love Maya Banks. Those of you who read my reviews know this. But, I didn’t love this one. I liked it, just didn’t love it. Evangeline is your typical fish-out-of-water and in-over-your-head heroine. She is as naïve as she is determined. Drake is your typical Alpha Male who swoops in to take care of the woman who he will come to love and feel he can’t live without. EXCEPT for the fact that not only does he make the big faux pas and lose her once, he does it AGAIN…………and AGAIN! With Evangeline seeing the good in Drake, she continues to forgive him, even though he knows he doesn’t deserve it. His inner circle isn’t even sure if he deserves her forgiveness. But, he gets it. I understand that Drake is really a mess and doesn’t really think he deserves anyone as good as Evangeline, but dang! Now, don’t get me wrong. I’ll say it again…. I liked the book. I liked the set up and I LOVED the secondary characters.

And, for the most part, I liked the story. I just didn’t like that he kept disrespecting her, until the end. But, even then, you have to wonder if he’ll do it again. That’s the part I didn’t like. You don’t know down to your toes that they are going to be okay. I’m also hoping that with the next book, which is Silas’s book (YAY!!!!!!), we find out more of the back story about Drake and his men. I loved the first book and had high hopes for this one. I just felt it lacked something……. With all of that said, I truly can’t wait for Silas’s book and to see what’s happening with the rest of the Enforcers.

excerpt

“Find her,” Drake said harshly, the nights without sleep evident in his haggard appearance. “This is your only priority, your only job. Find her and bring her back to me.”
He’d gathered his sentinels. The only men in his inner circle, a tight band of men—brothers—his partners in business and the only men he trusted with his life—and Evangeline’s.
The only men he’d allow to see him at his lowest, unguarded. Vulnerable. Nothing mattered to him. Not exposing his weakness. Not allowing his iron control that had maintained him through most of his life to slip. They all knew that Evangeline was . . . special. All important. And they, like him, liked her. Respected her.
And they were all pissed. At him.
“Goddamn it, Drake,” Maddox hissed out. “How could you do it? There had to be another way.”
“There was no other goddamn way and you know it!” Drake barked, fury and helplessness eating him alive, gutting him until there was nothing left but a soulless shell of a man standing helplessly in front of his brothers begging for their help.
Looks were exchanged. Some of sympathy, some of resignation as they realized Drake was right, and still others of quiet fury that Evangeline had been treated—betrayed—in such a despicable manner.
Goddamn useless woman. Can’t even give good head. Your only use is in my bedroom.
His cruel words sliced through his mind, a jagged cut making him bleed all over again, a vicious reminder of the unforgivable things he’d said to her. All in the effort to convince the fucking Luconis she meant nothing to him.
When in fact, she was his goddamn world. And she was gone.
He couldn’t blame her. He’d devastated her. Had ripped her to shreds until she was bleeding from the verbal wounds he’d inflicted. And Jesus, his physical treatment of her. No, the only person at fault was himself.
Silas had remained silent, his features carved in stone, but his eyes were a dead giveaway in a man who usually gave away nothing at all.
“She didn’t deserve this,” Silas said in his quiet voice. But then he never had to raise his voice to make his point. When he spoke, others instinctively ceased talking and listened to him. He was a man who commanded authority and respect.
“No, she didn’t,” Drake said hoarsely. “Don’t you think I know that? Do you think a single night goes by that I don’t replay the image of her broken, in utter despair, her tears—goddamn it, her tears—and worse, her fear. Of me. Of her humiliation. Her absolute belief in every insult, every word I hurled her way in an effort to make sure the goddamn Luconis never suspected what she meant to me. I’ll never forget. As long as I live, I’ll never forget that night.”
His tone grew savage, fury radiating from him like a beacon.
“She could be anywhere out there. Alone. Afraid. Her parents haven’t heard from her. And those bitches she called her best friends . . .” He broke off and had to visibly compose himself.
He and Maddox had gone there first only to discover that they hadn’t heard from her either. Except . . . Lana had admitted that Evangeline had called that day, the day she’d planned to visit them. To reconcile. And that she’d told her not to come. Guilt had been reflected in the eyes of all her “friends.”
It was then that Drake had understood that she’d never planned to execute her surprise to him, hadn’t lied to him in order to set up her playing hostess for him. She’d been hurt by her friends’ rejection, and so she’d turned to the one true thing in her life, seeking his approval, needing it, because she had no one else.

Maya BanksMy name is Maya Banks and I live in Texas with my husband and three children and our assortment of pets.

When I’m not writing, I love to hunt and fish with my family. We all love the outdoors and go on family hunting trips every year. We also love to travel. One of our more recent trips was to Scotland, which was every bit as comical as National Lampoon’s European Vacation. You know the part about “Look kids, Big Ben, Parliament” as they went round and round the roundabouts? Yeah, that was us, only we couldn’t even get out of the airport in Glasgow without hitting three of those suckers.

Perhaps the most rewarding aspect of a writing career is getting to meet so many wonderful readers. There’s nothing better than dishing books with someone who loves the romance genre as much as I do. Romance readers are passionate and vocal. We love our books, love our happily ever afters, and we love to spend time talking to others about our favorites. THIS is why I love my job so much, and I’m so grateful to readers who gave ME a chance when I began my career. So thank you.
