About the book: Release Date February 28 , 2017

Lucas Thorn wasn’t born a cheater. All it took was a single moment—say, a certain disastrous incident on the night before his wedding—and boom. Reputation destroyed forever and always. So now he owns it. He has a lady friend for every night of the week (except Sundays—God’s day and all), and his rules are simple: No commitments. No exceptions.

But a certain smart-mouthed, strawberry blonde vixen is about to blow that all to hell.

Avery Black has never forgiven Lucas for cheating on her sister. And suddenly being forced to work with him is pretty much a nightmare on steroids. Of course, it does afford her the opportunity to make his life as difficult as possible. But no good revenge scheme comes without payback. Because he didn’t become the Lucas Thorn without learning a few things about women.

Now Avery’s lust for vengeance has turned into, well, lust. And if Lucas stops cheating, it’s definitely not because he’s falling in love…

••••••••

REVIEW: CHEATER is the first installment in Rachel Van Dyken’s contemporary, adult CURIOUS LIAISONS erotic, romance series. This is businessman Lucas Thorn, and PA Avery Black’s story line.

Told from dual first person points of view (Lucas and Avery) CHEATER looks at the tumultuous relationship between Lucas Thorn and Avery Black. Avery’s history with Lucas is a heartbreak of family and friendship. Lucas Thorn was once engaged to Avery’s sister Kayla but the night before their wedding a drunk Lucas was found in bed with Avery’s sister Brooke and the aftermath broke two families and destroyed several friendships that were years in the making. Four years had passed and Avery found herself employed by Lucas Thorn-a man she despised for betraying her family. What ensues is the rebuilding relationship between two people who have loved one another for many years.

CHEATER is a story about one man’s fight to move on with his life-a move that furthers his reputation as a manwhore and cheater. Lucas was never in love with Kayla Black but had never intentionally set out to destroy her life. Lucas’s attraction to Avery began years before but the ten-year age difference meant Lucas was more of a big brother than a potential romantic involvement. Now that Avery is Lucas’s assistant his attraction to his ex-fiancee’s sister continues to grow. The $ex scenes are intimate and seductive although both keep secret their ongoing affair.

There is plenty of back and forth banter with some over the top (and sometimes funny) but not necessarily believable reactions from the parental units on both sides of the relationship. For those readers who despise ‘cheating’ or ‘infidelity’ in their romance story lines CHEATER is a different take on adulterous relationships with some angst and heartbreak, humor and fun, at the expense of our story line hero. Not everyone or everything is as it seems. The maturity level of all of the characters is questionable; oft-times the juvenile behavior was similar to YA; all of the women in Lucas’s life obviously have issues of low self esteem; the parent’s attitude and emotional reactions were outlandish and caricature-like in presentation- the gynecological appointment so out of this world.

We are introduced to Avery’s sisters: Kayla the betrayed; Brooke the psychotic; and of course Avery’s parents whose acceptance of Lucas is way too enthusiastic. Avery’s best friend Austin Rogers may or may not have a thing for Lucas’s best friend plastic surgeon Thatch Holloway-a man whose own history of ‘cheating’ becomes fodder for Austin Rogers-their story line is next in Cheater’s Regret.

CHEATER is a slow building story line that tries too hard; a look at one man who lives life by his own rules; and one woman who doesn’t want to be another nameless face one night of the week. The premise is imaginative and farcical; the characters are sensational and theatrical. Rachel Van Dyken is a delightful story teller but I had difficulty enjoying her take on the CHEATER.

Excerpt

The office building loomed ahead of me. I squinted up at it, covering my face with part of my hand as the sun cast its glare against the glass.
“What are we looking at?” Lucas whispered in my ear.
I let out a little yelp and jumped away from him, and I would have run into a passing biker if Lucas hadn’t pulled me out of the way with his coffee-free hand.
“Must you be such a pain in the ass?”
“Must you try to kill me?” I fired back.
He rolled his eyes. “Let’s go.” He started walking, hauling me with him.
We weren’t walking in the direction of the office.
“Um, Thorn—”
“I will seriously shove this Starbucks up that skinny ass if you don’t stop talking and just listen for once in your life.”
I shut up and followed, but only because he’d said “Starbucks” and was very purposefully moving in the nearest outpost’s general direction. If I looked pathetic enough, would he buy me coffee?
That was what my life was coming to.
Pity coffee.
My shoulders slumped at the thought when we walked into the building. The smell of fresh baked goods hit me with full force, and my stomach growled loudly, saying to everyone, I’m a hungry bear and may eat my young. Out of the way, please!
I followed Lucas to the line, still tempted to speak, but I figured if he wanted noise from me, he’d say something like, “You may grace me with your voice now, Avery.”
Even though I wasn’t talking, every time I heard someone order pumpkin bread I sighed, loudly, so loudly that the barista eyed me cautiously. Chill, Starbucks, I’m not going to steal a piece of pumpkin bread.
My mouth watered.
I mean, I wasn’t that desperate.
But if I took two, maybe three, steps toward her, yelled “Fire!” and then screamed nonsense about a bee attacking me, the pumpkin bread she had in hand would probably fall to the ground, and it would be wasteful if I didn’t rescue it from the ants.
All creatures deserve food—but pumpkin bread was too good for ants, too rich, and they’d explode all over the floor from the richness and it would be my fault—for saving the barista’s life, right? From the bee?
I think I just confused myself.
“Why are you breathing so heavy?” Lucas asked from my right.
I snapped out of my pumpkin-bread daydream and shrugged. “Sorry, low on sleep.”
He gave a noncommittal nod and then it was his turn, greedy little bastard already had one coffee now he was getting two! “A venti macchiato and a large coffee with room for cream, two slices—”
I elbowed him hard in the ribs.
“Sorry, um, three slices of pumpkin bread, thanks.”
He handed the barista his card, while my greedy eyes locked on the pumpkin bread as the barista placed it into a bag and gave it to him.
With an exasperated sigh, he shoved the bag into my hands. “Just leave me one bite.”
“No promises.” I was already digging into the bag, my mouth watering as I followed him around the counter with a little pep in my step.
Lucas grabbed our drinks and motioned toward one of the tables. I sat, stuffed more pumpkin goodness into my mouth, and managed to chug some coffee almost all at once.
Lucas shook his head. “I always forget how seriously you take your pumpkin bread.”
I moaned and took another huge bite. “My theory is this.”
He leaned forward, a smile curving around his gorgeous mouth. “Alright, out with it.”
More pumpkin bread found its way into my mouth as I talked—I didn’t even care if I looked like a starved animal. “Pumpkin bread has the same addictive properties as cocaine.”
“That’s your theory? That it’s a drug?”
“Right.” I sighed and leaned back. “Except it doesn’t make you skinny, unfortunately.”
His smile widened, and he grabbed a small hunk of bread. “Want to know my theory?”
“Yes, that’s exactly what I was thinking—I hope Lucas tells me his theory so I can eat his portion of bread.”
Lucas scooted the bag toward me and whispered, “Merry Christmas.”
“Oh, pumpkin gods.” I moaned again.
His eyes darted to my mouth.
“What?” I wiped my lips. “Is something on my face?”
“No.” He looked away. “So my theory is this . . . pumpkin flavoring is a conspiracy by the government to see how many ways we can market a flavor and make money off it.”
“Boo.” I gave him a thumbs-down. “Thanks, grinch. Oh, and stop ruining holidays.”
He smirked. “You’ve known forever that Santa isn’t real. Still doesn’t stop you from leaving him cookies every Christmas Eve, then sneaking downstairs and eating them all by yourself.”
“One”—I held up a finger—“it’s genius because nobody will touch them for fear that I’ll get mad. Two”—I held up a second finger—“when everyone else is sad about the Christmas cookies being gone, I know I’ll have them all to myself. It’s like . . .” I sighed, “. . . a Christmas present. To myself.”
“Except for that one time.” He smirked.
“Cruel man.” I glared at him. “How dare you eat my cookies?”
He shrugged. “They were sweet.”
Was it hot? In this little Starbucks? By the window where the sun was searing me alive like I was under a magnifying glass?
I tugged at my sleeveless blouse.
“About Saturday . . .”
Uncomfortable conversation, here we come! I strapped in and waited for the inevitable. And then realized, to my dismay, that he’d just bought me coffee and food without letting me go to the office.
My eyes filling with tears, I shook my head a few times. “Lucas, I may give you crap, but I really need this job.”
He frowned, like he was confused.
“Don’t say another word.” I held out my hands. “I’ll do anything, Lucas—and I mean anything—to keep this job. I wasn’t kidding when I said my parents were chomping at the bit to get me to move home, and I don’t want to. It’s not just about me being defiant; they want me to take over the family business.”
Lucas burst out laughing and then sobered. “Oh, you’re serious.”
“I can’t sell chicken, Thorn.”
“I mean, to be fair, Avery, your parents own a very lucrative organic meats company. I’m sure they could offer you at least five figures.” His smile was way too smug, but I still had to be nice to him rather than throw him off a cliff, because he could fire me.

After an intense whirlwind romance, Karrie Parker thought she had it all: a sexy husband, a loving family, a great career and a beautiful home.

Discovering the strength to carry on while making important, life-changing decisions, she finds herself desperate for answers. And holding the key to the puzzle is the one man she loathes immensely.

For up and coming motorcycle drag racer Tyler Strong, keeping painful secrets was never part of the plan. Racing motorcycles and winning was all he ever wanted to do, but when his best friend’s lies begin to unravel, Tyler is sent into a tailspin when he’s forced to come face to face with the one woman he vowed to stay away from. The woman he refuses to speak to, the woman he avoids, the woman he watches…from a distance.

As the truth becomes clear, will destiny bring these two unlikely souls together or tear them apart forever?

REVIEW:

From a Distance begins with Karrie and her husband, Alex, navigating their daily life. Alex has been being away more and more, drag racing with his best friend, Tyler Strong. Karrie has grown to despise Tyler. He’s never been friendly towards her and Alex is always telling her about Tyler’s exploits with the women at the track. When Karrie finds she is going to be by herself on their anniversary, things get a little sticky between her and her husband.

While at work as a nurse, Karrie is called down to help with the victims of a horrific accident that has come in through the ER. Through the chaos, Karrie is finally told who the victims are: her husband and his best friend, Tyler. While Karrie tries to make sense of her life, or what she thought was her life, the one person she despises most is the one with all of the pieces to the puzzle. She soon discovers that not only was her husband not whom she thought, but that Tyler Strong was nowhere close to what she thought either. What follows is a heart breaking story full of secrets, lies and soul deep revelations as she and Tyler try to put their lives back together.

From a Distance is the first story I’ve read by L.M. Carr. Karrie’s situation will certainly pull at your heartstrings, but I found her to be a bit of a spoiled brat in the way that she handled most curves life threw at her. When tragedy struck, she did seem to put her best foot forward and handle things like an adult. Tyler is an awesome character. His caring nature will endear him to all who read his story. I will warn you that there is another horrific incident that tests their bond, but in true romance fashion, they weather the storm and come out on the other side more in love than ever. This one did cause me to shed a tear, or a hundred. Well done, L.M. Carr.

•••••••••

REVIEW: WAIT FOR IT is the fourth installment in Molly O’Keefe’s contemporary, adult EVERYTHING I LEFT UNSAID erotic, romance series. This is successful entrepreneur/inventor Blake Edwards, and single mother Tiffany Edwards’ story line. WAIT FOR IT can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from previous story lines is revealed where necessary. Tiffany and Blake’s story line has been building throughout the series. We were first introduced to our heroine in book one as the abused and broken trailer park tenant whose life was slowly spinning out of control; Blake Edwards is the business partner of former race car driver Dylan Daniels (Everything I Left Unsaid #1 & #2).

Told from dual first person points of view (Blake and Tiffany) WAIT FOR IT follows Blake Edwards as he attempts to ‘clean up’ his brother Phil’s mistakes. We were first introduced to our hero at a time when the appearance of Tiffany in his life left much to be desired. A young woman with three children, Tiffany revealed that she was Blake’s sister-in-law, and the children are the result of the relationship and marriage to his brother Phil. Believing the woman was only looking for money and revenge, Blake pays off our heroine to keep away from his mother. Fast forward one year, Tiffany and the children are struggling to stay one step ahead of the abusive man they called husband and father, and it is Blake Edwards who steps in to help the woman with whom he will fall in love. What ensues is the building but questionable relationship between Blake and Tiffany, and the secrets Blake keeps hidden from the family he loves.

Blake is a bit of a pr*ck; a man whose need for control results in his desire for suffering and pain. Cleaning up his brother’s messes has left our hero with a chip on his shoulder, and a need to protect the people he loves. A cold and calculating man Blake goes into every situation ready for a fight but his quick turn about with Tiffany is cause for concern. Tiffany knows betrayal, pain and heartbreak first hand. From the family that pushed her out of their life to the man who has broken our heroine’s spirit and soul, Tiffany set out to protect the children she loves even if it means ‘selling her soul’ to the devil himself. Learning to trust again comes with painful memories and forgotten feelings. The $ex scenes are erotic; the intimacy is questionable when Blake makes Tiffany an offer she cannot refuse.

We are introduced to Tiffany’s sister Bea, as well as Tiffany’s children Danny, Amber and Sienna. Dylan Daniels and Annie McKay (book 1 & 2) play secondary and supporting characters-Blake’s partnership with Dylan continues to struggle.

The world building focuses on domestic violence, and Tiffany’s struggle to free herself from the past. I did had some misgivings with Blake and Tiffany’s ‘ongoing arrangement’-an exchange for money that didn’t’ sit well with this reader.

WAIT FOR IT is a heartbreaking story line of one woman’s struggle against domestic abuse, and one man’s battle to control his life. The premise is challenging; the romance is controversial; the characters are colorful and passionate.

Five years ago, Nick Markovic found himself consumed by his quest for vengeance. The one time he managed to find peace was in the arms of Hayley Dalton. ••••••••••

REVIEW: FOR HIS EYES ONLY is the thirteenth full length installment in Lexi Blake’s contemporary, adult MASTERS AND MERCENARIES erotic, romantic suspense series focusing on the men and women who work for McKay-Taggart and Knight Agency. This is former Russian agent Nick Markovic, and history professor Hayley Dalton’s story line. FOR HIS EYES ONLY can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from previous story lines is revealed where necessary although there are references to ongoing scenarios from previous investigations and fall out.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Nick and Hayley) FOR HIS EYES ONLY is a second chance romance between Nick Markovic and Hayley Dalton. Ten years earlier, a then fifteen year old Hayley Dalton fell in love with her cousin Desiree’s friend Nick Markovic; fast forward five years and twenty year old Hayley finds herself giving her virginity to the man that she loves only to learn that Desiree was the woman that Nikolai wanted. Five more years would pass before Hayley walked back into Nikolai’s life when her own life sat on the precipice of danger and death. Someone wanted Hayley dead and Nick is the man she turns to for protection and help. What ensues is the rekindling relationship between Nick and Hayley, and the search for the people responsible for threatening our heroine’s life.

FOR HIS EYES ONLY has a very large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters (most of whom were previously introduced in earlier story lines). The slow building premise finds Nick Markovic as both protector and lover to the woman that calls to his heart. Nikolai is a Dom, and as a member of The Garden BDSM Club he does not want Hayley a part of that life but attention from a number of other males, and fellow agents at McKay-Taggart and Knight finds Nick on the offensive as he slowly introduces Hayley to the role as his submissive. The $ex scenes are intimate; the BDSM scenarios are light with some limited spanking, rope play, and oral $ex.

Throughout the story line the reader is inundated with numerous references to Nick’s ex partner and girlfriend Desiree. Desiree is a former agent who got caught up in the game of power and greed, and when her life was forfeited, Hayley became the target of some powerful people hoping to acquire some information that Desiree kept hidden. Nick’s promise to protect Hayley comes with the guilt of his feelings for Desiree, and his continuing attraction to Hayley as well. For all intents and purposes, FOR HIS EYE ONLY felt more like a love triangle between Hayley, Nick and Desiree. Desiree was never out of mind for Nikolai, and in this I struggled with his attraction and love to our story line heroine. Nick’s need for Hayley was more of a power struggle with himself; a need to control that which he believed was his.

FOR HIS EYES ONLY is an infinitely detailed and comprehensive story of mystery, suspense, betrayal and regret that follows several paths converging in a final show down where secrets are revealed; lies are confessed; the truth is a hard pill to swallow. The copious number of references to Desiree made it difficult to like our story line hero; the constant reminders of his relationship with Desiree was troubling not only for Hayley but for this reader as well. The premise is intriguing; the romance is heartbreaking and spicy; the characters are colorful and sensational. FOR HIS EYES ONLY is a provocative tale of betrayal, intrigue and love.

For His Eyes Only teaser

excerpt

Nick went back to staring at the report. “Hayley’s not mine. She was Desiree’s cousin. Now she’s my client.”
Who had been tired the night before and that was why she’d said the things she’d said. This morning she’d seemed much more sensible. After she’d had some sleep and a shower and had straightened herself up, she’d been quiet and seemingly reflective. She was very likely embarrassed by what had been said the night before.
I would get safety from murderers and I would get orgasms. I’m sorry, Nicky, you’re going to tell me how that’s a bad deal for me.
He was going to make sure she understood that his protection wasn’t based on whether or not she slept with him.
Because he wasn’t sleeping with her. He couldn’t hurt her that way again.
“So she was your old lover’s cousin,” Owen mused. “The lover you weren’t exclusive with and who wouldn’t marry you. The pretty girl who looks at you like you’re the sun in the sky is her cousin.”
“She looks at me like she would look at man who can save her.”
“I can save her.” Owen’s eyes lit up, his brows waggling. “Maybe she’ll look at me like that.”
Anger flared through his system. “Don’t you dare. I told you I would take care of her.”
His arms crossed over his big chest and Nick knew he’d been had. “Well, that answers the question with more honesty. You can pretend, but you like the girl. And if you honestly don’t then you need to know that the boys got a good look at her last night. If she’s going to be hanging about, she should be ready for some serious male attention.”
“What are you talking about?”
“The lads talked it over last night and decided there’s no dibs on this one. They all saw her at pretty much the same time. They looked over that dead body and saw her walking in the hall and that was when the fighting started. We all sat down and decided no dibs on her. She’ll get to pick. You should know that Sasha and Jax have decided if she picks either of them, they’re willing to share. I don’t play that way. That’s something I do know about meself. No need for you to be telling me that tale. If there’s going to be some sharing in the bedroom, it’s going to be the traditional kind between a man and a woman and her stacked best friend. That’s what I say.”
“You tell those boys to stay away from her or they will be dealing with me. They will not like to be dealing with me. I will put up with many things from them. They can poke all the corpses they like. They can punch each other. I do not care. They touch Hayley and I will be caring.”
“Wow, now you do sound Russian. A scary Russian. Still, I think if you don’t want the girl, shouldn’t she be allowed to choose? Think about it. It could be fun.”
“Are we talking about the lost boys and their battle for the new chick?” Kayla strode in, her hair in a high ponytail. It bounced as she walked, a testament to her seemingly ever-sunny personality. “I had babysitting duty last night and they kept talking about her even after lights out. Bad boys. I had a plan though. I think we make them compete in a beauty pageant. Hayley gets to judge.”
“I’m judging a beauty pageant?” Hayley followed behind Kay, and both women were followed by Charlotte Taggart and Penelope Knight. It looked like Hayley was rapidly being accepted by the women on his team.
That was not necessarily a good thing. The women on his team could create chaos like no others.
“That sounds like fun,” Charlotte said with a smile. “I think we should require Speedos for the bathing suit competition. No boring board shorts. If Hayley’s picking a lover, she needs to see some booty.”
Hayley stopped, her cheeks going the sweetest color of pink. “Wait. What?”
Penelope put a hand on her arm. “They’re teasing you, dear. Don’t worry about it. The lads will be very polite. Though you should expect some suitors while you’re here. Especially if you come down to the dungeon.”
Now he was the one flushing. “Excuse me?”
Hayley shook her head as she joined him at the table. “It’s nothing. I was just talking to the girls. Did you get the report? Penny said the Dallas office had found something.”
He was all too aware that they weren’t alone. Damon and Ian walked in with Brody Carter and Walter Bennett. The four men settled into chairs as the women joined them. Nick held out a chair for Hayley. He would have to remember that he couldn’t leave her alone for a minute or someone would be whispering in her ear, giving her ideas she shouldn’t have.
Like visiting The Garden on a play night.
It wasn’t happening.
