Description:
It’s Bridget Jones with vampires in this fresh and funny paranormal romance from debut author Juliet Lyons

When Silver Harris kisses sexy Irish vampire Logan Byrne on New Year’s Eve, she knows other humans just won’t suffice. Convinced she’ll never see him again, she joins the uber-popular vampire dating site, V-Date.com.

What Silver doesn’t know is that the site is more dangerous than she could ever imagined, and soon she’s in over her head. When Logan returns, sparks fly and attraction sizzles, but they’ll have to escape some very real demons if they have any chance of lasting forever.

Review:

Dating the Undead by Juliet Lyons is the 1st book in her Undead Dating Service series.  This was a different type of paranormal story line revolving around vampires and humans.   Silver Harris, our heroine, is a beautiful feisty sexy young girl, who secretly is trying to find the person responsible for killing her mother.  Silver starts dating vampires, which in this book, seems the norm for human girls who find them sexy and attractive.  Silver has agreed to go undercover using the V-Date.com site to help the police learn more information about how vampires live and how to stop them.

Logan Byrne is close to 200 years old, and is a gorgeous vampire with sexy green eyes.  He saves Silver from a bad vampire, and in no time their attraction for each other is hotter than hell. Logan works for Ronin, the ancient vampire who he is blood bound to; Little does Logan know that the assignment he is given, will bring him to Silver.   Their relationship was great, as Silver was a piece of work, with her off the cuff sassy comments, and  I loved them together.  They were so much fun, not to mention totally steamy.

Logan realizes he is falling in love with Silver, having feelings he has not had for so long. Because he knows his boss will not approve, and his fear of his old dangerous sire coming back to haunt him, Logan will decide to break up with Silver to keep her safe.   Once he finds out that Silver is working for the police, Logan knows he has to protect her, and also knows he can’t live without her.  At this point, all hell is about to break loose, with Logan’s sire returning putting both of their lives together.   During this time, Silver will also find out who was responsible for her mother’s murder.

I enjoyed Dating the Undead, mainly because the main characters were lots of fun, likeable and their chemistry was off the wall.   After the exciting & surprise climax twist, there was an epilogue that moved forward three years in time, which was a nice touch.  Wonderful start of this new series by Juliet Lyons.  I recommend Dating the Undead to read if you enjoy paranormal romances with vampires.

excerpt

I freeze in terror. What a waste of Dad’s money those self-defense classes turned out to be.
“Silver, it’s just me,” a lilting Irish voice says at my ear, the hand dropping from my shoulder.
I turn around to find myself nose to nose with my vampire from New Year’s Eve, his bright green eyes piercing mine.
I’m struck by several conflicting emotions all at once—anger, relief, and in a tiny measure—happiness. Anger wins out. On impulse, I slap him hard across the face, pointing with a white, clenched hand to the garden I’ve just sprinted across.
“I thought I was about to be murdered, asshole,” I hiss through my teeth. “I ripped my coat. My heels are ruined. All because you thought it might be fun to follow me home.”
He smirks, nonplussed, sliding his hands into the deep pockets of his navy pea coat. “I wasn’t following you,” he says, eyes twinkling.
“Oh, that’s right,” I say, voice dripping with sarcasm. “You were just walking me home again. Except this time from fifty yards behind and without me knowing.”
Before he has a chance to reply, the front door flies open and my landlady Vera emerges in a long, silky, oriental dressing gown. She is wigless for once, a Pucci scarf twisted into a makeshift turban covering her head. In her right hand, she holds a meat cleaver.
“Step away, you rapist bastard!” she yells, holding the large knife shakily aloft.
I glare at the vampire, expecting him to either throw his hands in the air or take a step backwards. Instead his brows knit together and his mouth drops open. “Etta Marlow?” he asks, staring at her as if she just walked on water.
The meat cleaver lowers a fraction. “What’s it to you?” Vera demands, her voice losing some of its previous menace.
I roll my eyes. Of course he remembers her. He’s probably seen all her films.
“It is you!” he erupts, wagging a finger in her direction. “You’re Etta Marlow! You played Susie De Sousa in Girl Uptown with Gregor Lane. I love that movie.”
The meat cleaver drops, forgotten, to her side as she pats her turban, eyelashes fluttering. “Fancy you recognizing me,” she mutters happily.
“Excuse me, Vera,” I interject, “but there’s still a potential rapist on your doorstep here.”
Vera looks back to the vampire, who shakes his head, smiling. “A misunderstanding, Etta. I was making sure Silver here made it home safely. She got the wrong end of the stick.”
Vera, or Etta as she was once known, glances over at me. “Do you know this charming fellow, dear?”
I scowl at them both. “Well, yes, but— “
“Well then, you must come in, dear boy. I could show you my Oscar, if you like?”
The Vampire looks as if he’s about to pee himself with excitement. “You mean the one you got for Days Like These with Vic Stevens?”
She holds out a thin hand towards him, gold bangles jangling on her wrist. “The very one, dear. Come, come in.”
I watch, stunned, as he takes her hand, green eyes lit up in excitement.
Before stepping through the door, he hangs back. “Ms. Marlow, I’m afraid it’s only courteous to let you know before I enter that I’m not human. I’m a vampire.”
Vera’s tinkly laugh echoes around the street like a bicycle bell. “Oh, you’re so sweet. Didn’t you know I’ve met dozens of vampires? They’re two a penny in Hollywood, darling.”
Following her across the threshold, he flashes the cockiest of grins. “Coming, Silver?”
My jaw drops in disgust. I’m tempted to sulk off to my basement flat, but instead, I trail after them and slam the door.
We follow Vera along an elegant gold and cream hallway into her immaculate, monochrome front room. Even though I’ve been here on numerous occasions, I’m always mesmerized by the sheer extravagance of the place—buttery white leather sofas, cream fur rugs, one wall is painted black and white to resemble piano keys. It should look tacky, but somehow, it works.
“You two make yourselves at home whilst I go and make myself presentable.” Vera says. “Then I’ll dig out that old Oscar of mine.”
I know, of course, the Oscar will not have to be ‘dug’ out of anywhere. It’s always on display in the den, alongside her film stills and other memorabilia.
“I didn’t catch your name,” she croons to the vampire before she leaves.
He puts a hand on his chest. “Forgive me, I should have introduced myself. Between the meat cleaver threat and getting slapped by Silver here, I seem to have forgotten my manners. I’m Logan. Logan Byrne.”
For strange and unfathomable reasons, my stomach flips. Logan. It suits him.
“Charming,” Vera says. “Don’t you go anywhere, Mr. Byrne.”
As soon as Vera disappears from the room, Logan collapses into one of the white leather arm chairs and puts his crossed feet onto the cut glass coffee table.
I’m still standing, one brow arched, arms folded across my chest. “So, Logan,” I hiss. “What the hell is this?”
He grins, dimples putting in their first appearance of the night as he gazes up at me. “Did anyone ever tell you, you’re particularly beautiful when you’re angry?”
“Oh, cut the crap,” I say, ignoring the hot flush climbing my neck. “Why did you follow me?”
“Like I told Etta, I wanted to make sure you got home safely, that’s all. Though I’m a little confused as to why you have three houses.” He holds up fingers to count. “The one I left you at on New Year’s, the one Nathaniel dropped you at, and now this—cohabiting with an aged 1940’s screen siren.”
“It’s none of your business,” I say, chin in the air. “And anyway, how do you know Nathaniel?”
He shrugs. “I know most of the vampires in London.”
I humpth. “I bet you do.”
In the blink of an eye, he is towering over me, face inches from mine. I inhale his clean, masculine scent like a drowning person coming up for air, and as he leans closer, I find myself gravitating towards him—a flower reaching for sunlight.
He pulls the collar of my coat aside and peers into the gap. As his fingers brush my jaw, an uncontrollable shiver zings through me. I disguise it by stepping out of reach and batting his hand away.
“He did a messy job on your neck,” he says, in a low voice.
“What’s it to you?” I snap.
Before I realize what’s happening, he closes the gap between us. One hand cupping my cheek, he bends over, lips brushing the place Nathaniel bit me, tongue gently swiping the puncture holes.
“That should stop the bleeding,” he says, pulling away. “But you’ll still have a bruise in the morning.”
I rub my neck and look at my fingers. No blood. “So, you can heal wounds? Just another of your unique skills along with beating up drunk men and following young women home for kicks?”
He sinks back into the armchair. “You’re a sexy girl, Silver. I’m glad we’ve met again.”
I snort incredulously, trying, without success, to forget the warmth of his hand on my face. “Well, you certainly made sure we did.”
“And of course,” he continues, pretending to examine a photo on the coffee table. “I’m hugely flattered I’ve managed to turn your head towards my kind.”
“You didn’t turn anything,” I say tartly.
He cocks a brow, gaze burning through my clothes like a laser. I feel a sharp twitch between my legs, as though he’s controlling my private areas by some invisible string. “Are you sure about that?”

Then Ryan turns up missing. And her terror that he’s hurt—or worse—leads to something dark and intoxicating. They both love adrenaline, except this time, the addiction is each other.

And Ryan’s.

••••••••

REVIEW: LOST LYRIC is the fourth installment in Cari Quinn and Taryn Elliott’s contemporary, adult FOUND IN OBLIVION erotic, romance series focusing on the rock band Warning Sign. This is rockstar Ryan Waters, and tour bus driver Denver Casey’s story line. The FOUND IN OBLIVION series is a spin off from Quinn and Elliott’s LOST IN OBLIVION series. Several characters from LIO cross over including band manager Lila Shawcross and record company owner Donovan Lewis. You do not have to have read the other series to follow or understand the events of LOST LYRIC. Lost Lyric can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Ryan and Denver) LOST LYRIC follows the friends to lovers relationship between musician Ryan Waters, and the band’s bus driver Denver Casey. Throughout the series the sexual attraction and energy between our leading couple has been palpable but Denver Casey tries to keep her distance from everyone including the man that calls to her heart. Denver Casey is on the run, hiding from her past, and driving cross country keeps our heroine on the move, all the time. Enter Ryan Waters, musician, best friend, and the man who pushes all of Denver’s buttons. What ensues is the building romance between Denver and Ryan, and the fall out when Denver’s past catches up on the road.

The relationship between Denver and Ryan is a friends to lovers romance. Denver struggles with her attraction to Ryan, a man who battles his own demons throughout the story. Ryan Waters knows Denver is the woman that calls to his heart but her back and forth emotional upheaval continues to send mixed messages to our story line hero. The $ex scenes are intimate and erotic. There are some light BDSM scenes including anal and rope play, toys and spanking.

The world building continues to follow the band on tour towards the ultimate acknowledgement by their friends and fans. Denver’s struggle to keep one step ahead of her past will culminate in a show down between the present and the past with some help from an unlikely source.

All of the members of Warning Sign play secondary and supporting roles including Juliet Reece (Triple Trouble), Michael Shawcross and Chloe Adams (Bedded Bliss), drummer Malachi Shawcross, lead singer Molly McIntire, keyboardist West Reynolds and psychology major Lauren Bryant (Dirty Duet). We are also re-introduced to Lauren’s best friend Professor Ethan Haywood –a man who may or may not have a romantic interest in Molly McIntire. Mal, Molly and Ethan’s story line is next in Perfect Pitch-August 2017.

LOST LYRIC is a story about music, friendship, family and love. The premise is sexy and intoxicating; the characters are spirited, flawed and energetic; the romance is provocative, emotional and intense. LOST LYRIC is a passionate look at one couple fated by circumstance, on the road towards their happily ever after.

Description:

BAYSIDE SUMMERS is a series of STANDALONE steamy romance novels featuring alpha male heroes and sexy, empowered women. They’re fun, flirty, flawed, deeply emotional, always passionate, and easy to relate to. Bayside Summers is part of the LOVE IN BLOOM romance collection by New York Times & USA Today bestselling and award-winning author Melissa Foster. While each book may be read as a standalone, you might enjoy reading the entire Love in Bloom series. Characters from each sub-series appear in future books.

Fall in love with Rick and Desiree in Bayside Desires.

In Bayside Desires…
As the co-owner of Bayside Resorts, Rick Savage has a fabulous beachfront resort where he works with his best friends and brother, and plenty of beautiful women to keep him company. When Desiree Cleary moves in next door to take care of her mother’s estate, Rick sets his sights on the sexy pre-school teacher. But Desiree’s sister isn’t keen on the fast-talking playboy making moves on the younger sister she’s never had a chance to get to know. And she has other ideas in store–like opening Summer House Inn, a bed and breakfast that could be big-time competition for Rick’s resort.

Review:

Bayside Desires by Melissa Foster is the 1st book in her new Bayside Summers series.  I have read many of the Love in Bloom series and the spinoffs.  Melissa is such a prolific author & I have not been able to keep up with her.  However, I have enjoyed every book I have read. Bayside Desires is a new series with characters from previous series.

Desiree Cleary comes home to Bayside under the impression that her mother needs her help.  When she arrives, her sister also arrives, and she too is under the wrong impression.  Seems their mother is going travelling, and wants her daughters to run her businesses.  Desiree is not happy, as it’s been a long time since she saw her mother and sister, having been growing up with her father after a divorce.  Being forced to stay a few months until her mother returns, Desiree, who is reserved,  will slowly reunite with her wild liberated sister.

Desiree will also meet Rick Savage, our hero, who is in Bayside to help his brother run their Bayside Resorts.  Both Rick and Desiree are immediately attracted to each other, and despite their differences (he is a fun loving outgoing playboy type and she is a quiet confident reserved type), the chemistry between them will escalate into a full blown hot sexy romance.

Between Violet and Rick, Desiree will become more open to being more liberated, and the fun begins. Besides the sweet romance between Desiree and Rick, they each have issues to get past.  Rick has not gotten over the death of his father years before, and Desiree wishes her mother would pay more attention to her.  One of the best parts in this story was the dog, Cosmo, who was such fun.  I also enjoyed the secondary characters, mostly Rick’s family and Emery, Desiree’s best friend.

This was a fun story, heavily on the sexual side, as well as having some somber moments.  It was nice to see Desiree and Violet bond, even if they are very different.  As we got closer to the end, we weren’t sure if our couple would have a happy ever after, especially since Desiree might stay in Bayside and Rick would go back to Washington, DC.  I enjoyed Bayside Desires, and the finale was sweet.

Now Julian is back — a new man — and determined to win Kendall’s heart. But this reformed bad boy just might find that Going in Deep is harder than it looks.

Billionaire Bad Boys: Rich, Powerful and Sexy as hell.
All Billionaire Bad Boys Novels stand alone!

••••••••••••

REVIEW: GOING IN DEEP is the fourth installment in Carly Phillips’ contemporary, adult BILLIONAIRE BAD BOYS erotic, romance series focusing on a trio of close knit friends-Derek West, Kaden Barnes and Lucas Monroe, and former business partner Julian Dane-a spin off from her DARE TO LOVE SERIES. This is IT businessman Julian Dane, and Kendall Parker’s story line. GOING IN DEEP can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story line is revealed where necessary.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Kendall and Julian) GOING IN DEEP is a second chance romance for freelance cyber security specialist Julian Dare, and the woman he loved Kendall Parker. A few year earlier, strung out and addicted, Julian Dare sued his former best friend Kaden Barnes’ and owners of the computer software company BLINK for his share of the profits but in the meantime forged a relationship with Kaden’s future sister in law to get back at the man he was hoping to destroy. Enter Kendall Parker, the woman Julian hopes to rekindle a relationship while he struggles to make amends to everyone he hurt in the past.

GOING IN DEEP reveals some of the history as to why Julian Dane fell into the world of alcohol and drugs, as well as the outstanding guilt he carries throughout his life. Not only is Julian responsible for destroying the relationship between himself and his best friend but our hero must ensure the well being of someone else in his life.

Kendall Parker struggles with bi-polar disorder, and throughout the process of coming to terms with her disease, Kendall finds herself pulled back into the world of the man she once loved-a man who no longer resembles the cold, calculating lover from her past.

The relationship between Kendall and Julian is one of second chances; a rekindling romance between two people destroyed by one man’s battle with too many demons and the guilt and shame of betrayal and loss. Kendall, a volunteer at a local dog shelter, not only suffers with a psychological disorder but must battle for her independence from a family who wish to protect the people that they love. The $ex scenes are intimate and seductive without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

The secondary and supporting characters include Kaden and Lexie (Going Down Easy); Julian’s younger sister Alyssa, as well as his new house guest Alex, a young woman who finds herself abandoned on so many different levels. We are also reunited with several of the previous story line couples, if only, by way of mention or in passing.

The world building looks at forgiveness and penance; second chances and the reawakening a love damaged by betrayal and mistrust.

I did have a couple of concerns with some of the current story line content: the lack of any major confrontation between Julian and the partners at BLINK -although many of the issues had previously been revealed throughout the series I think the overall situation /resolution required more story line conflict to be believable (under the circumstances) or at the very least a more plausible, more emotional outcome; and Alex’s brother Billy’s status was left hanging without any real resolution considering he was a possible threat to Julian’s welfare and Alex’s safety.

The premise is revealing; the characters are spirited and dynamic; the romance is captivating and passionate. GOING IN DEEP looks at the destructive nature of addiction, and the resulting fall out when the pain is too deep.

IntercessionAmazon / B&N / Kobo

Description:
In the history of the Tantalarian people, The Tribunal Elder is the only one who ever stood up to the Tribunal. He did that when he was a Tribune, and managed to live to eventually lead it. He had disagreed with a decision the counsel made and acted on it. In protest; he cut off his ceremonial braid and threw the discarded plait onto the floor at The Elder’s feet, and refused to ever wear a braid again. His action was considered an insult, to the Elder of that time, as well as the Tribunal. The spirit of the man, who was, still lives in the ruler who is now.

The Tribunal Elder has lived through more millennium than he cares to think about. He is not the type to shirk his duties. He is a force to recon with; yet he is known to be a kind man. To settle a dispute between the Martians and the Human settlers, he is being forced to take the mother ship that they had arrived on Tantalus with many eons before back into space. This, he is not happy about.

The message from the Martians is clear, remove the settlers from the surface of their planet, or they will die. The Tribunal Elder soon discovers there is more to this than those who are command know about, for the act that precipitated this action had multiple events. Someone is working in the background, manipulating forces, to create a power struggle between the two species.

Will he allow the Tantalarians to be pulled into a conflict that they have and want nothing to do with?

Review:

Intercession by M.A. Abraham is the 4th book in her Tantalus series.   M. A. Abraham once again gives us an exciting and tense story as we return to the world of Tantalus.  Intercession picks up shortly after the last book ended. A brief refresher of the premise of Tantalus: This is a Sci-Fi story about two species (Humans & Tantalarians) that are forced to work together on the planet Tantalus.

The Tribunal Elder has been requested to go to Mars and remove the human settlers who live there or all humans will be killed.  He gathers a team made up of Tantalarians and human leaders who have migrated nicely in Tantalus.   The purpose is to find out the what and why causing this issue.  The Elder wants only mated men, as the Sirens from Mars are known to use their ability to get what they want by using alluring spells; and the mated men are immune to those spells.  He also wants Terec & Adele (our previous book heroes) to come, especially since Adele has the ability to read people and able to see if they are lying.

When they arrive in Mars, they are greeted by the Siren leader, as well as one of the woman warriors, who threaten them.  They are told that a few of the women are missing, and blame the human residents.   The Elder senses there is more to the story, and with his team they meet with the resident human leaders of various ships to discover what is happening.  Adele will make friends with Glynnis, one of the Siren females, who helps heal those who have been affected by sickness from contaminated water.   Adele and Gynnis will play a big part in helping fix the water, and learn the truth about what is happening.

What follows is a well written and excellent story line that will have the Elder, and the Tantalarians discover the issues, as well as stopping a dangerous revolt.  I loved meeting Echoes, a Siren princess, who was able to stop the revolution, and dictate punishment to those involved.  I loved Adele and Terec. I also enjoyed the surprise twist was also very nice.

M.A. Abraham once again gives us an interesting, fun and different story line of the Tantalarians and Humans working together, as they try to diffuse the situation in Mars.  If you enjoy fantasy, aliens,  world building, then I suggest you start this series with the first book.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date April 25, 2017

Dr. Elle McCray has a plan. Work hard. Be the best. And do it alone. After her ex-husband’s betrayal, she’s learned being feared is a hell of a lot easier than being humiliated. So when trouble personified, Lane Cannon, dares to flirt with her, she shuts him down cold. Too gorgeous. Too cocky. And his job as The Grove’s sexual surrogate is to sleep with patients. No, thank you.

Former escort Lane Cannon has spent enough years with people looking down on him. Stupid. Trailer trash. Rent boy. He’s heard it all. He’s worked too hard to shed his past to let some haughty doctor cut him down. But something about Elle’s ice queen act has his dominant instincts perking up and his body taking notice. He can’t walk away.

After an evening of verbal sparring turns into a night of steamy hate sex, Lane’s ready for round two. But Elle proposes a business deal. How better to keep things strictly physical than to pay him for his services?

Lane wants her, not her money. But he’ll play along in exchange for one thing—all the control. It’s only supposed to be a dirty little fling between colleagues, but these two are about to learn a lesson in love…by the hour.

REVIEW: BY THE HOUR is the second installment in Roni Loren’s contemporary, adult PLEASURE PRINCIPLE erotic, romance series focusing on the men and women who work for a New Orlean’s clinic designed for sexual healing. This is Dr. Elle McCray, and sexual surrogate/Dominant Lane Cannon’s story line. BY THE HOUR can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story line is revealed where necessary.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Lane and Elle) BY THE HOUR follows the enemies to lovers, building relationship between Dr. Elle McCray, and Lane Cannon. As part of the team at Dr. McCray’s New Orleans clinic Lane, a former male escort, works as a sexual surrogate for patients struggling with issues of a sexual nature but his past as an escort, and his failure to succeed, continues to haunt our leading hero. Lane’s attraction to Elle McCray pushes the doctor’s boundaries-walls she has built to protect herself from another broken heart-but boundaries Lane Cannon is determined to bend. What ensues is the closeted relationship between Lane and Elle, and Elle’s struggle to see Lane as more than the escort from his past.

We were first introduced to our leading couple in book one-OFF THE CLOCK-where Dr. Elle McCray was portrayed as a cold, abrasive, calculating, and p*ssed off woman looking for revenge against Dr. Donovan West-a friends (co-worker) with benefits relationship that fizzled when Dr. West fell in love with Dr. Marin Rush. Elle’s less than positive introduction left many readers with a taste for revenge against our story line heroine. Enter Lane Cannon, a man determined to unleash the pain our heroine keep’s buried deep inside.

The relationship between Elle and Lane begins as a work place, enemies to lovers mutual friendship when Lane realizes that there is more to Elle than the hardened and bitter thirty-something woman whose icy control he wants to shatter. Lane’s less than stellar past continues to follow his present including a confrontation with someone from our heroine’s past. The $ex scenes are erotic, intense and seductive. Although Lane is acknowledged as a sexual Dominant, the BDSM scenes are light and limited throughout the story.

All of the previous story line characters play secondary and supporting roles including Drs. Donovan West and Marin Rush, as well as the clinic’s addiction therapist Oriana Wallace who has a well-time habit of walking in on the series’ couples.

The world building continues to focus on the doctors and therapists, the patients and their disorders at the New Orlean’s clinic for sexual healing. Work place romances become a part of the world of Roni Loren’s PLEASURE PRINCIPLE series.

BY THE HOUR is a sexy and provocative story line with two strong leading characters. While Elle struggles with a painful and humiliating past, Lane uses his experiences to further his career with an eye to the future. The premise is energetic and arousing; the characters are inspiring, colorful and encouraging; the romance is captivating, sensual and passionate, BY THE HOUR brings together two people whose must overcome the past to succeed at what life has to offer.

Excerpt Black and Hot Pink

Every time she looked at Marin and Donovan together, that was all she could think about. I’ve become that woman. I screwed up and let myself feel something for a man. Once again, the man had reminded her exactly why she couldn’t let her guard down. He’d bailed, leaving her looking pathetic and petty. Runner-up to some other woman. Again.
Second place. First loser.
It was her own fault. She’d broken her rules. Lesson learned. Never again. That was the main reason she’d forced herself to this party—to show that she wasn’t bothered, that she was a grown-up. That, and the fact that it was her birthday and it felt a little too pathetic staying home alone for it. Not that anyone knew her calendar had clicked over to a new year today. The only birthday card in her mailbox had been from her mother. The inscription had been the same as the one on the Christmas card she’d received from her a few weeks ago. Best wishes. Love, Mom.
There’d been an expensive bottle of Pinot Noir delivered with it. Elle had brought it to the party as a gift, an olive branch of sorts. She’d even managed to congratulate Marin and mostly mean it. At the end of the day, it wasn’t Marin she was angry with. The situation with Donovan had been fucked up before the woman had ever arrived on campus.
As if hearing her name from Elle’s thoughts, Marin glanced her way, a wrinkle in her brow. The woman was probably wondering why Elle had shown up. They’d managed to forge a professional working relationship in the last month or so, but they were not friends who hung out after work and would never be. But before Elle could attempt to give some sort of polite, nothing-to-see-here nod, Marin walked with purpose over to one of the other guests. The man she singled out turned and offered Marin a smile full of warmth and affection, the expression lighting his already too handsome face.
An unwelcome ripple of awareness went through Elle.
Great. With all her ruminating, she hadn’t noticed him walk in.
Lane Cannon. Resident sex surrogate for The Grove’s sex therapy wing—or the X-wing, as most of the staff had dubbed it. Big. Blond. And way too cocky for his own good. Though, he probably should be, considering he’d figured out how to make a legitimate living sleeping with their wealthy, often famous clients. Therapeutic assistant. That was his official title. But in her opinion, getting some certificate in California didn’t make what he did much different than being a prostitute who happened to be a good listener.
She’d said as much to a colleague one day when he’d suggested one of the patients may benefit from Lane’s services. Of course, Lane had walked up and overheard her calling him a hooker. He hadn’t said a word, but the dimpled smirk he’d given her had held a big dose of go fuck yourself.
Then, he’d proceeded to talk to her colleague about the patient and ignore Elle completely.
First, it had pissed her off. It was her wing, dammit. Her patients. She’d started to interrupt, but then he’d sent her a look of simmering challenge, brow cocked, eyes daring her. For some reason, it had sent a rush of wildfire through Elle, heating her from the inside out, and it’d had nothing to do with anger.
She was so used to people deferring to her, being exceedingly polite, being professional because she was a doctor, because she was a boss, because she was in charge. Because she could be a scary bitch and didn’t apologize for it. But with that one look, Lane had thrown down the challenge. You don’t intimidate me, doctor. You don’t impress me. Just try and play those games and see what happens.
It had been further proof that her wires were tangled now when it came to sex and men. Other women wanted romance, sweetness, love. She’d been that way once upon a time. Her ex-husband had promptly burned that fantasy to the ground, exposing it for the sham it was. Window dressing on lies. Now, she got turned on by the thought of a good hate fuck. Those were honest. Those were real. Pure physical release.
And everything in that look that day had said that Lane was more than capable of hating her right into a screaming, begging-for-more orgasm.
Dangerous.
So when Marin handed Lane a fresh glass of wine and nudged him Elle’s way, Elle should’ve known that it was time to get up and leave. She didn’t like Lane. He didn’t like her. And she certainly didn’t need Marin sending him over because she pitied Elle sitting alone. Screw that.
But Elle couldn’t seem to make herself get up and bail. With Lane eating up the space between them with those long, powerful legs, his green eyes locking with hers, she couldn’t seem to do anything at all. His lips curled at the corner, as if he knew the effect he had on her. To others, the expression probably appeared friendly. After all, he was the laid-back, good-time guy in everyone else’s eyes. The guy you’d call when you got a flat tire or if you drank too much and needed a ride. But she saw the wicked glint beneath. The one that said he liked to stir up trouble, that he liked to put people off balance. That he could put her off balance.
And damn, it didn’t help that he was nice to look at. Dark blue henley stretching over broad shoulders, jeans soft and worn in the right places, and thick-soled boots that made a heavy sound against the wood floor. Nothing pretentious or overdone. He looked like a guy who drank domestic beer and worked with his hands.
Hands. The thought snapped her back into reality. The guy did work with his hands. On other women. Hell. This is why she needed to steer clear of Lane Cannon. He scrambled her goddamned brain, especially after so many months of abstinence.
She sat up straighter in her chair and crossed her arms, sending the go away signal with a bullhorn. That always worked. She had a Ph.D. in that signal.
Lane ignored it. He grabbed the chair next to her, slid into it, and then plunked the glass of wine he’d been carrying onto the table in front of her. When she didn’t reach for it or acknowledge him, he draped his arm over the back of her chair as if she’d invited him there. He didn’t touch her, but his body heat warmed her neck as he stared out at the group like she’d been doing.
“You know, I’ve heard you can’t really kill someone with a look. But good on you for continuing to test the theory.”
She didn’t look his way and tried to keep her expression smooth as he did the man-spread next to her—knees wide, big body taking up too much space. He smelled like laundry soap and dark, rich beer. And when the side of his knee bumped against hers, soft jeans brushing bare skin, an uninvited spark of awareness shot straight upward, announcing his presence to her renegade lady parts.
She cleared her throat. “Brave of you to be a test subject.”
His lips quirked in her periphery. “I saw you give the death ray to Donovan earlier. Figured if he survived, I was safe.”
She frowned, hating that any of her emotions about Donovan had slipped through, hating that she even had emotions about Donovan. “Don’t be too confident. If you’re coming over here to tell me to smile or join the party, I may dial the look up to eleven.”
“Ouch, Spinal Tap level.” He took a drag off his beer. “But no. You do your thing. I don’t need you to smile and fake it to make me comfortable. I’m good.”
“Because you’re comfortable anywhere,” she said, not hiding the wryness in her tone.
He shrugged. “Pretty much.”
She grabbed the wine and sipped, enjoying the smooth warmth of it and hoping it would settle the jumpy feeling Lane’s presence was causing. “Must be nice.”
“It is.” He peered her way. “So why are you so uncomfortable?”
“Never said I was.” She took another long gulp of wine.
“Right. So you’re totally chill with watching the guy you used to hook up with fawn all over his new woman?”
The wine caught in her throat, making it burn and forcing her to cough. No one except Marin was supposed to know about her and Donovan’s history. They’d been so careful. “He’s not—we weren’t.”
“Calm down. Not judging. Just observant.” He glanced back at Donovan and Marin as the two goofed around and danced to some upbeat country song drifting from the jukebox. “If it helps, she turned me down for him. So that just proves that fate had a plan for them.”
She snorted. “Fate?”
“Absolutely. Because, let’s face it, I’m really hard to turn down. I mean, look at me.”
Elle turned automatically and he grinned.
“Made you look.”
She groaned. “Can you go away now?”
He swigged his beer. “Nope. This is fun. We should do this more often. Or are you afraid my hooker cooties are going to get on you?”
She sniffed. “If you’re expecting me to apologize for stating an opinion, don’t hold your breath. You get paid to get off. I call it like I see it.”
“Is that right?” He cocked his head. “Always so sure you know it all, huh? Must be a nice view from that glass tower.”
Her teeth pressed against each other.
He leaned in, getting way too close, and lowered his voice. “Truth is, you don’t see me at all, doc. You don’t try to see. Not me or anyone else at this party.”

Review:

The Girl Who Knew Too Much by Amanda Quick is a mystery romantic thriller that takes place during the 1930’s in old glamorous Hollywood.  The story starts off with a bang, as we meet Anna Harris, who has discovered the dead body of her employer, with a message about a notebook and to “run”.  She manages to flee from the scene in New York to Hollywood, with a new identity.  Months later, we meet Irene Glasson, who is now a columnist for a Hollywood gossip paper.

Murder seems to follow Irene, as the actress she was meeting at the Burning Cove Hotel was found dead.  Because she heard the footsteps of the possible killer, Irene jumps into the pool to escape.  It is here she meets our hero, Oliver Ward.  Oliver is the owner of the hotel, and a former famous magician, who due to an injury gave up that career and went into the hotel business.  Oliver takes an interest in Irene, and they will join hands to try to solve the murder.  When their relationship becomes a bit more than partners, Irene will eventually confide her past, running from someone who wants her dead.  Oliver is determined to keep a close eye on Irene, as he wants to protect her, as well as his hotel.

While interviewing actor, Nick Tremayne, Irene gets a scoop to enhance her career, only to have the powerful Hollywood conglomerates use everything in their power to cause her to lose her job, even to the extent of hiring people to stop her anyway necessary.   Those who have been looking for Anna Harris, will discover her new identity, which will double up on the threats to her.

This was an exciting and fun mystery thriller, with a number of twists, and many dangerous situations that both Oliver and Irene are in the middle of.  The slow build romance between Irene and Oliver was nice, as I did like them together.  The nice thing about their romance was it as part of the story line, not taking away from the real story….the murder investigation.  I also liked some of the secondary characters in the book, especially Luther Pell.   The last third of the book was filled with action and excitement, and held my attention throughout.  The Girl Who Knew Too Much was another great story by Amanda Quick.  If you enjoy mysteries taking place in the 1930’s; in old time glamorous Hollywood, and excellent characters, then you should read The Girl Who Knew Too Much.

••••••••••

REVIEW:CONFESSIONS OF A FORMER PUCK BUNNY is the fourth installment in Cindi Madsen’s contemporary, new adult TAKING SHOTS hockey, romance series focusing on the members of Boston College hockey team. This is rookie Ryder ‘Ox’ Maddox, and journalism student Lindsay Rivera’s story line. CONFESSIONS OF A FORMER PUCK BUNNY can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary.

DEFINITION: ‘Puck Bunny-noun-A female ice hockey fan whose interest in the sport is primarily motivated by sexual attraction to the players rather than the enjoyment of the game.’

Told from dual first person points of view (Ryder and Lindsay) CONFESSIONS OF A FORMER PUCK BUNNY follows Lindsay as she struggles to pass her final class of university math. Enter rookie hockey sensation Ryder Maddox, Lindsay’s latest math tutor, and the man with whom Lindsay will fall in love. What ensues are Lindsay’s attempts to keep her distance from everything hockey, hoping to heal her reputation and forget about the past.

Lindsay Rivera is a former puck bunny whose reputation with the players precedes our heroine’s introduction including her failed attempt to seduce then destroy team member Hudson Decker and the BC hockey team (Anatomy of a Player #2). As a rookie, Ryder Maddox is unaware of Lindsay’s reputation, or her previous one-night stands with the members of his team. Ryder’s attraction to Lindsay will be complicated when the past reveals more than either one knew.

The attraction between Ryder and Lindsay is immediate but Lindsay struggles with her past reputation, staying clear of all things hockey related including the members of the team. One year ‘clean and sober’ from the world of hockey Lindsay fears falling back into old habits when Ryder Maddox enters her life. Ryder intends to prove to Lindsay that the past is in the past; his pursuit of our story line hero is sweet and romantic. The $ex scenes are intimate and provocative without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

All of the previous couples play secondary and supporting roles including Lyla and Beck, Whitney and Hudson, Megan and Dane. We are introduce to Ryder’s parents: his father, a former professional hockey player, and his long suffering mother who struggles with sins from the past.

The world building follows the BC hockey team as they vie for the playoffs towards another championship season. Ryder and Lindsay’s relationship continues to build although Lindsay struggles with her previous behavior and reputation.

CONFESSIONS OF A FORMER PUCK BUNNY is a predictable story line with a couple of twists that add some outside conflict into an already struggling relationship. The premise is realistic and engaging; the characters are spirited, colorful and animated; the romance is fated and passionate. CONFESSIONS OF A FORMER PUCK BUNNY is an enjoyable and welcome addition to Cindi Madsen’s TAKING SHOTS new adult, romance series.
