ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date June 19, 2017

The last thing advertising art director Lucy Bellamy wants is to go home to the Outback, but duty to family calls. At least there’s one bonus—her first love, sexy cowboy neighbour, Garth Mackenzie, is there and the attraction between them is still explosive. But Lucy has no intention of getting stuck in this two-bit town and she counts down the days until she can go back to her real life.

After an engineering degree and working in the mines of Western Australia, Garth has returned to the Outback and is home to stay. His goal is to settle down, start a family, and work his beloved land with the girl he’s always loved. But if it comes to Lucy choosing between the glamour of the city or making a home with him in the Outback—he’d lose, hands down.

REVIEW: HER OUTBACK COWBOY is the first installment in Annie Seaton’s contemporary, adult PRICKLE CREEK romance series focusing on a once tight knit family of cousins (Lucy Bellamy, Jemima Smythe, Sebastian Richards, and Liam Smythe) torn apart by the accident that caused the death of their three mothers. This is advertising art director Lucy Bellamy, and ranch owner Garth Mackenzie.

Told from several third person perspectives including Lucy and Garth HER OUTBACK COWBOY focuses on the second chance relationship between advertising art director Lucy Bellamy, and ranch owner Garth Mackenzie. Six years earlier Lucy lost her mother to a tragic accident, then one year later her father died of a broken heart leaving Lucy alone to grieve at a time when her life and career was about to take off. Fast forward to present day, when Lucy, along with her cousins Jemima, Sebastian and Liam are called home to Pilliga Scrub, back to the family ranch of Prickle Creek, Australia, where decisions are made about their future and their lives. Enter Garth Mackenzie, neighbor and ranch owner, and the man who once owned Lucy’s heart. What ensues is the rekindling relationship between Lucy and Garth, and Lucy’s bullheaded decision to never make the ‘country’ and Prickle Creek Farm her permanent home.

The relationship between Garth and Lucy is one of second chances. Garth has never forgotten about the girl who walked away; and Lucy was determined to put time and distance between the man who broke her heart, and the heartbreaking memories of family and love. With her return, Garth is hoping for a second chance but Lucy wants nothing to do with working a ranch, or living without her city amenities. The $ex scenes are all implied and fade to black.

We are introduced to Lucy’s cousins- Jemima Smythe, Sebastian Richards, and Liam Smythe- each of whom lost their mother to the same accident that claimed the life of Lucy’s mom. And we can’t forget the cousin’s grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Peterkin who are desperate to pull the extended family together.

Be forewarned, because the author lives in Australia, HER OUTBACK COWBOY contains expressions of slang and language terminology that may not be familiar to North American readers. e.g. ute = utility vehicle: blue=argument

HER OUTBACK COWBOY is a sweet story of romance and second chances with engaging characters and spirited beliefs. The premise is encouraging; the romance is fated but mostly implied; the characters are passionate and realistic. Annie Seaton pulls the reader into a story line about family, love, loss and starting over.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date June 9, 2017

Mary Larkin was hard at work as the office manager at the Green Mountain Country Store when Cameron Murphy brought her dad, Patrick, in to visit. That fateful first meeting, which took place in You’ll Be Mine, sets the stage for Mary and Patrick’s long-awaited romance in Can’t Buy Me Love!

Mary enjoys her predictable, satisfying life in Butler. If it’s a little lacking in excitement, well, that’s okay with her. But after meeting Patrick and getting to know him better at his daughter’s wedding, Mary is intrigued by the well-known, sexy billionaire businessman.

Patrick is equally intrigued. For the first time since he suddenly lost his wife thirty years ago, he has met a woman who makes him feel less lonely, and all he wants is more of his Sweet Mary from Vermont. Flirty phone calls become a weekend away together that takes his relationship with Mary to the next level.

But with six hours and two vastly different lives standing between them, can Mary and Patrick find happily ever after together? And after telling her father to keep his hands and everything else off Mary, will Cameron approve of her father’s new romance?

•••••••••••

REVIEW:  CAN’T BUY ME LOVE is the second installment (and novella) in Marie Force’s contemporary, adult BULTER, VERMONT romance series. This is fifty-something billionaire businessman Patrick Murphy, and forty-something office manager Mary Larkin’s story line. The BUTLER, VERMONT series is a spin-off from the author’s GREEN MOUNTAIN SERIES but you do not need to have read the original series to understand or follow the new release. Patrick Murphy is the father of Cameron Murphy ; Mary Larkin is the office manager for Lincoln Abbott-Patrick Murphy’s best friend. Patrick and Mary met at Cameron and Will’s wedding in the book You’ll Be Mine.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Patrick and Mary) CAN’T BUY ME LOVE follows Mary Larkin as she endeavors to get past her inhibitions and fears about dating a billionaire who lost his wife in childbirth years before. Patrick slowly begins a seduction of the woman that calls to his heart but knows he must take it slow lest he scares away his ‘Sweet Mary from Vermont’. What ensues is the building relationship between Mary and Patrick, and Mary’s struggle with the possibility of walking away from all that she loves.

The relationship between Patrick and Mary began with their introduction at Patrick’s daughter’s wedding in the book YOU’LL BE MINE. For weeks Patrick and Mary have been talking via phone calls but Patrick is determined to take Mary away for a weekend together, taking their relationship to the next level. The $ex scenes are intimate (some implied) without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

There is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters including several couples from the Green Mountain Series. The world building looks at love between a billionaire and the woman that calls to his heart-Mary struggles with her lowly position and boring lifestyle in the face of Patrick’s business and financial success.

CAN’T BUY ME LOVE is a sweet and enjoyable story line; a sexy novella about a lonely billionaire whose heart was shattered years before, and the woman that is quickly becoming everything and more. The premise is lighthearted and playful; the characters are passionate and mature- there are very little anxious or conflicting moments; the romance is intimate and intoxicating. CAN’T BUY ME LOVE looks at love between an ‘older couple’, a rarity in romance story lines, but a love that burns as hot as any love, at any age.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date June 6, 2017

Cooper Nelson’s SEAL career was cut drastically short when an explosion left him almost completely deaf. With so much of his pride and self-worth tied to the profession he loved above all else, Coop struggles in his nearly silent new world, his future seemingly bleak…until Commander Hurt badgers him into volunteering at the Riverton School for the Deaf. There, he meets teacher Kiera Hamilton, who opens his eyes—and his heart—to a love more fulfilling than any job could be.

Ten years his senior, Kiera can’t believe Coop would ever be interested in anything long term, but he patiently proves her wrong. And she’s not the only one enamored with the sexy former-SEAL—her impressionable first-grade students are enthralled with the man, especially Frankie. The troubled young boy flourishes with each of Cooper’s visits, which only makes Kiera fall harder.

As he learns ASL, connects with the students, and gets closer to Kiera, Coop’s happier than he’s ever been…until an attempted abduction at the school threatens to take away everything that makes his new life worth living.

REVIEW: PROTECTING KIERA is the tenth installment (and novella) in Susan Stoker’s contemporary, adult SEAL OF PROTECTION romantic, military, suspense series focusing on a tight knit group of Navy SEALS and the women they love. This is twenty seven year old former Navy SEAL Cooper Nelson, and teacher Kiera Hamilton’s story line. PROTECTING KIERA can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary.

NOTE: PROTECTING KIERA is also the latest installment in Ella James’s multi-author Kindle Worlds of the Brotherhood Protectors.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Kiera and Cooper) PROTECTING KIERA focuses on the building relationship between former Navy SEAL Cooper Nelson, and teacher for the deaf Kiera Hamilton. Cooper’s last deployment overseas and his Navy career ended when an explosion resulted in permanent hearing loss for our story line hero. Meeting Kiera Hamilton at the School for the Deaf stirred something inside Cooper Nelson he long thought dead. Having a difficult time adjusting to civilian life, Cooper’s attraction and need for Kiera Hamilton pushed Cooper to volunteering at the school where Kiera taught the deaf and hearing impaired. What ensues is the building relationship between Kiera and Cooper, and Kiera’s struggle to accept their ten year age difference in the face of their growing love.

There is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters including many of Cooper’s former SEAL buddies: Patrick and his wife Julie, Commander ‘Tex’ Hurt (Protecting Melody), Matthew ‘Wolf’ (Protecting the Future), Slade Cutsinger  (Protecting Dakota) and newcomer Axel Svenson ‘Swede’ who works for the security company known as the Brotherhood Protectors; as well as a number of students at the Riverton School for the Deaf.

PROTECTING KIERA is a quick read; a novella length story line that sees wounded Navy SEAL Cooper Nelson come to terms with his injury, his place in civilian life, and falling in love with the woman that calls to his heart. The premise is engaging and entertaining; the romance is quick to build-their attraction to one another has already been established; the characters are colorful and energetic. PROTECTING KIERA revisits many of the author’s previous story line characters and couples, giving the reader a glimpse into what was and what will be.

The Suffering Tree by Elle Cosimano – a Review

The Suffering Tree by Elle Cosimano – a Review

The Suffering TreeAmazon / B&N / Kobo / BAM / Book Depository

Description:
“It’s dark magic brings him back.” Tori Burns and her family left D.C. for claustrophobic Chaptico, Maryland, after suddenly inheriting a house under mysterious circumstances. That inheritance puts her at odds with the entire town, especially Jesse Slaughter and his family—it’s their generations-old land the Burns have “stolen.” As the suspicious looks and muttered accusations of her neighbors build, so does the pressure inside her, and Tori returns to the pattern of self-harm that landed her in a hospital back in D.C. It all comes to a head one night when, to Tori’s shock, she witnesses a young man claw his way out of a grave under the gnarled oak in her new backyard. Nathaniel Bishop may not understand what brought him back, but it’s clear to Tori that he hates the Slaughters for what they did to him centuries ago. Wary yet drawn to him by a shared sense of loss, she gives him shelter. But in the wake of his arrival comes a string of troubling events—including the disappearance of Jesse Slaughter’s cousin—that seem to point back to Nathaniel. As Tori digs for the truth—and slowly begins to fall for Nathaniel—she uncovers something much darker in the tangled branches of the Slaughter family tree. In order to break the curse that binds Nathaniel there and discover the true nature of her inheritance, Tori must unravel the Slaughter family’s oldest and most guarded secrets. But the Slaughters want to keep them buried… at any cost.

Review:

The Suffering Tree by Elle Cosimano is a Young Adult suspense romance novel.  Tori Burns has recently lost her father, so when they receive notice that they have inherited land and property in Chaptico, Maryland, her family jumps at the chance to move.  Although the reasons why the house has come to them is mysterious and sketchy, they move from the D.C. area – making Chaptico their new home.  But the locals aren’t nearly as welcoming as they would like them to be.  Especially the Slaughter family who up until a week ago owned the house and land they now occupy!  The Slaughter roots run deep in Chaptico, and the Burns family are considered transplants, and not well liked by any means, in fact some are saying they stole the house from the Slaughters.

With all the chaos and turmoil the new move has brought – it brings Tori back to self-harm, something that has previously put her in the hospital.  From the moment they arrived Tori started having bad, vivid dreams.  On one particularly bad night a dream awakens her with a startle.  She dresses and runs outside to the little cemetery and large oak tree on her property, that she is always mysteriously drawn to.  With everything building, the townspeople, the Slaughters –  Tori does the one thing she knows will release her and ease her misery.  She cuts herself.   And in that moment, below the oak tree, the ground moved.  The earth erupted and from below that oak tree, aged, withered and worn – a young man emerged. Clawing his way out of his earthly grave. And in that moment, Tori could not believe her eyes.  Surely they have betrayed her.  But when the young man, covered in mud and dirt touches her, she lost consciousness.

Nathaniel Bishop does not know why he has returned.  Only that he has.  And one thing is clear, his hate for what the Slaughter’s have done to him many years ago runs as deep as the roots of this old oak tree.  Once Tori realizes that Nathaniel isn’t here to hurt her, she comes to befriend him, but little does she know that her life and that of Nathaniel’s are intertwined. As she dissects and investigates the mysterious reason that has brought her here, she soon comes to realize that the Slaughter’s secrets run deep and that they would stop at nothing to keep those secrets in the family.  But at what price, and what will the end results be for not only Tori but for Nathaniel as well?

I enjoyed Tori from page one, and I completely understand from which the self-harm has come from.  I don’t believe this story will be everyone’s cup of tea, as self-harm is quite taboo  but I thoroughly enjoyed it, and completely understood the correlation of Tori’s self harm and Nathaniel’s resurrection.  The interweaving of the story of what has brought Tori to Slaughter Farm and the telling of the past of how Nathaniel came to Chaptico –  and how he ended up buried under the oak tree was fascinating to me.

Nathaniel’s story dates back to slave times, and how the Slaughter’s were slave owners.  It tells of Nathaniel and his best friend Emmeline, and how they were kidnapped and brought to the United States and sold into slavery.   The story contains dark magic and spells of what has brought Nathaniel back. Essentially telling of two stories at once and weaving them into a wonderful web of loyalty, friendship, love and the ties that bind.  It also shows just how family secrets can ruin lives and take them all at the same time.  And what one will do to get to the bottom of those secrets and what another will do to cover them up.

Nathaniel Bishop was a good man; bound by loyalty and friendship.  He has tried to remain true to his word and promises.  But some promises go unfulfilled.  That is until the time is right to rewrite the wrongs.  His loyalty to Emmeline and to Tori made him quite likeable.  The life that he had previously endured as a slave was horrific and you want for nothing more than to allow him some time of happiness and freedom.  But with the end eminent – you want him to fulfill the promises he has made and you want him to finally have peace.  But is that all possible?  Can that come to pass and allow Tori to finally have the answers she so desperately needs?

I would recommend this to any mature teen and up.   The story is timeless, beautiful and a great opportunity to discuss self-harm.  The story wouldn’t have come to pass if Tori didn’t have a past history of self-harm and in that self-harm she finds life and hope.   I am looking forward to continuing this story and hope that there is a future for Nathaniel and Tori.

I’ve proved to Kristen that she can trust me with her body and her heart. But when her past comes back to haunt her, I need to prove that she can trust me with her life. And I might have to get my hands dirty after all.

••••••••••

REVIEW: HARD STICK is the first installment in L.P.Dover’s contemporary, adult BREAKAWAY sports, romance series focusing on the men and women of the professional hockey team The Charlotte Strikers. This is team captain Kellan Carter, and bartender/interior designer Kristen Robinson’s story line.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Kristen and Kellan) HARD STOCK focuses on Kristen Robinson’s fight for her freedom from a controlling ex. On the run, following the murder of her best friend Cole, Kristen finds herself in Charlotte, North Carolina, falling for the team captain of the Charlotte Strikers. What ensues is the building relationship between Kristen and Kellan, and Kristen’s struggle to stay one step ahead of her past.

The relationship between Kristen and Kellan is one of immediate attraction but due to her past, Kristen keeps everyone at a distance fearing the possibility of retribution and revenge. In hiding, with a new identity, Kristen will come face to face with her past-a man who is determined to keep Kristen to himself. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate with the use of sexually graphic language and text.

We are introduced to several members of the Charlotte Strikers- alternate captains Dallas Easton and Braeden Wallace, Coach Carlisle, and rookie Maddox Ledger, as well as Kristen’s friends Brooklyn, Brooklyn’s brother and FBI agents Jason Avery and his wife Aylee; Kellan’s mother Mary, and long suffering father Graham Carter. The requisite evil is all too familiar to our story line couple.

HARD STICK is first and foremost a story of suspense as the hockey trope takes a backseat to our heroine’s battle with her past. There is a twist in the story that I suspected early on but a twist, none the less. The premise is entertaining but there are definitely some over the top scenarios as it pertains to the suspense, mystery and take down; the characters are charismatic and colourful; the romance is seductive and provocative. HARD STICK is a dramatic, intense and enjoyable read.

“So what happened to Maddox? I couldn’t help but notice his face.”
Dallas and Braeden glanced at each other and chuckled. “Kellan fucked him up in practice,” Dallas replied.
I gasped. “Why?”
He finished off his beer, and I could tell he was feeling it by the lazy smile. “It’s what he does. Maddox was being a dick and Kellan put a stop to it. It’s why he’s our captain.”
“Wow, that’s craziness.”
I ran his card and held it out to him, but he grabbed on to my hand. “You haven’t agreed to go out with him, have you?”
“Who? Kellan?” I asked. The girls gawked at me and snorted.
He nodded. “Yeah.”
“No, why?”
“Just asking,” he said with a shrug. He put his arm around the blonde and they started for the door. “It’d be nice to get the five hundred dollars.” They stopped and he smiled at me over his shoulder.
“What are you talking about?” I demanded.
Braeden sighed and smacked Dallas on the back of the head. “Stop fucking with the girl.” Then he turned to me. “It was just a stupid bet.”
“Stupid?” Dallas laughed. “You put three hundred on it, so I don’t want hear that shit.” In a drunken haze, he smiled over at me. “Just do us a favor and don’t go out with him until after the weekend. We made a bet that he couldn’t get you by the end of the week.”
Braeden hit him again. “What the fuck? Shut the hell up.” He pushed Dallas out the door and they all followed him. So Kellan agreed to the bet? That was mighty bold of him.
I could hear steps on the hardwood floor behind me. “You all right?” Chris asked.
Turning on my heel, I smiled. “Yep.” If Kellan was trying to win the bet, he wasn’t trying very hard. But then again, maybe five hundred dollars was nothing compared to the money he earned. I used to make a good living, but at least I was able to retrieve the money I had in the bank before my supposed death. Having that money helped, especially since I didn’t make nearly as much working at the pub. Hopefully soon I’d be back to doing what I loved.
“Why don’t you go home? I can finish up here,” Chris offered.
“You sure? I don’t mind staying.”
He shook his head. “Go. You do enough here as it is.”
I hurried behind the bar and grabbed my purse. “Thanks, Chris. After all the training Aylee puts me through, I’m exhausted by nine o’clock.”
“I can imagine.” He laughed. “I know not to mess with you now.”
Aylee taught me many self-defense techniques and how to fight. Before, I had no clue what to do if someone attacked me. After everything that happened with Mitchell and Cole, I had to make sure I was ready for anything. At least now, I wouldn’t have to worry about it anymore.
I waved goodbye to Chris and then walked out the door. The night was cool and I breathed in the clean air; the smell of rain was near. We needed it after the long, dry summer we had. Looking over at my car, I didn’t realize there was a truck parked next to me with someone leaning against it. It wasn’t just any someone, either.
“Where were you tonight?” I asked, looking straight at Kellan’s smiling face. He had on a pair of jeans that hung low on his hips with a snug green T-shirt that showed off his perfectly sculpted arms. Why did he have to be so sexy? Not to mention, he had perfectly straight, white teeth, which I thought would be a rarity among hockey players.
“So you missed me, huh?”
His smile was infectious and I caught myself smiling back. “I wouldn’t say missed, but I was curious where you were. I saw what you did to Maddox.”
He shrugged. “It had to be done. Maddox has a large fucking head and needed to be brought down.”
I held up my hands. “You don’t have to explain. I, of all, people know what kind of head he has.” It was the size of the entire country.
Chuckling, he stepped forward, his gaze roaming over my body. “You seem different tonight. It’s not very often you smile.”
I hadn’t had a reason to, but I couldn’t tell him that. “Maybe it’s because I know something you don’t.”
“Oh yeah? What’s that?”
“Uh, I don’t know, perhaps something about a bet?”

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date June 13, 2017

I’m Griffin Reed—cutthroat entrepreneur and competitive bastard. Trust is a four-letter word and everyone is disposable…except Britta Stone. Three years ago, she was my everything before I stupidly threw her away. I thought I’d paid for my sin in misery—until I learned we have a son. Finding out she’s engaged to a bore who’s rushing her to the altar pisses me off even more. I intend to win her back and raise our boy. I’ll have to get ruthless, of course. Luckily, that’s one of my most singular talents.

Sixty days. That’s what I’m asking the gritty, independent single mother to give me—twenty-four/seven. Under my roof. And if I have my way, in my bed. Britta says she wants nothing to do with me. But her body language and passionate kisses make her a liar. Now all I have to do is coax her into surrendering to the old magic between us. Once I have her right where I want her, I’ll do whatever it takes to prove I more than need her.

•••••••••••

REVIEW: MORE THAN NEED YOU is the second installment in Shayla Black’s contemporary, adult MORE THAN WORDS romance series. This is realtor Griffin Reed, and PA Britta Stone’s story line. MORE THAN NEED YOU can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story line is revealed where necessary but I recommend reading the series in order for backstory and cohesion. Some of the events of MORE THAN NEED YOU run parallel to the events of book one-MORE THAN WANT YOU.

Told from first person point of view (Griffin Reed), with a final chapter by Britta Stone, MORE THAN NEED YOU is a second chance romance focusing on the rekindling relationship between realtor Griffin Reed, and PA Britta Stone. Brothers Griffin and Maxon Reed’s relationship was upended and destroyed when Griffin perceived a betrayal by the woman he loved Britta Stone, and the brother he once shared a thriving business and brotherly bond. Fast forward to present day, wherein Griffin discovers that Britta gave birth to his son, months after he walked out of her life, and in the ensuing time Griffin had manwhored his way through a long, list of women. With the revelation that he and Britta had a son, and Britta is newly engaged to a man who is willing to raise Griffin’s son as his own, our hero demands sixty days together with the woman he once loved, to prove that he is capable of fidelity, romance, and a promise for the future.

Griffin Reed thought his life was over when he perceived a betrayal by the woman he loved. Not only did he accuse his brother of scheming and plotting against him, but Griffin also believed Britta Stone was a part of the conspiracy to destroy his life. Finding out he had a son threw Griffin Reed into an emotional abyss. Britta Stone’s life was destroyed the day Griffin accused her of colluding to sabotage his career, with his brother, behind his back. Their fractured relationship, alongside Griffin’s hatred for his brother, destroyed any semblance of a future and a family for our story line heroine. With the prospect of marriage to a man she doesn’t love finds Britta Stone accepting Griffin’s sixty day offer of a temporary truce after which she will be in control of both of their futures.

The relationship between Britta and Griffin is one of second chances; an acrimonious affair wherein Griffin is determined to win back the woman he loves, and to prove he is worthy of a second chance. The $ex scenes are intimate and seductive without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

We are reintroduced to Griffin’s brother Maxon Reed, his fiancé Keely Kent, Griffin and Britta’s son Jamie, and Britta’s fiancé Makaio Kale. Griffin and Maxon’s sister Harlow Reed’s story line is next in MORE THAN LOVE YOU.

The world building follows the rebuilding of two fractured relationships: Maxon and Griffin; Griffin and Britta, as well as the restructuring of a business that was all but destroyed by misconception and miscommunication.

MORE THAN NEED YOU is a sexy, second chance romance. The premise is engaging, inspiring and heartbreaking; the characters are passionate, determined and charismatic; the romance is passionate, emotional and intense. MORE THAN NEED YOU is a captivating look at family, love, and the fall out of secrets and lies.

Though she graduated with a degree in Marketing/Advertising and embarked on a stint in corporate America to pay the bills, her heart has always been with her characters. She’s thrilled that she’s been living her dream as a full-time author for the past seven years.

Shayla currently lives in North Texas with her wonderfully supportive husband, her teenage daughter, and a very spoiled cat. In her “free” time, she enjoys reality TV, reading, and listening to an eclectic blend of music.

ABOUT THE BOOK : Release Date June 5, 2017

I have everything I want. Success. Wealth. Women…and make that plenty of those. As a filthy-rich CEO, I would say I’m pretty much close to perfection. Except for that one weakness: I’m cocky as hell, and an irresistible magnet for women.

So when one tiny mistake lands me in hot waters with the investors, I have one hell of a choice to make:
Restore my reputation…
Or risk losing my company.

I’m a man of my word and failure is not an option. Not now. Not ever. I fully intend to uphold my responsibilities.

Sharing an apartment should be easy, right? And it’s only for six weeks.
That’s what I thought before I found out that my new roommate is female.
And wow.
Vicky Sullivan is unlike any woman I’ve ever met.
She’s hot as sin, and crazy.
Definitely not my kind of crazy, but too hot to pass up.
There’s something about her that makes me rage with want.
I don’t like her, but obviously my dick does. And what he wants, he gets.

Six weeks…
Living together shouldn’t be too hard…
Until my best friend challenges me to a bet…
I make it my mission to make her mine.

There’s only one problem.
I have to break…Every. Single. Rule.
And did I mention she’s completely off-limits?

It’s too late to say no.

COUNTING ON YOU is a standalone rom-com with no cliffhanger.

REVIEW: COUNTING ON YOU by JC Reed and Jackie Steele, is a contemporary, adult stand alone, romance storyline focusing on wealthy business owner, CEO and sex addict Kaiden (Kade) Wright, and registered nurse and love addict Victoria (Vicky) Sullivan.

NOTE: COUNTING ON YOU is a story line that is a revised and revamped full length edition of the authors’ Love Addicts Anonymous which was originally scheduled as a three part serial but never came to fruition.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Kade and Vicky) COUNTING ON YOU follows the six week stint at a rehab center for sex addict Kade Wright, and love addict Vicky Sullivan, and the controversial therapy practice of pairing sex addicts with love addicts in adjoining suites.

From the outset Kade and Vicky are in denial, as are most people in rehab situations. Vicky claims to love the man she has stalked for months, and that her court ordered rehab is a complete misunderstanding; and Kade’s self-imposed six week program hopes to keep the business investors from loosing faith, and ultimately cleaning up his manwhore reputation. His pairing with Vicky Sullivan throws all caution out the window when our leading hero finds himself wanting something more than the usual one-night stand. What ensues is the forbidden but building relationship between Vicky and Kade, and the fall out when their secret affair is revealed.

COUNTING ON YOU is listed as a romantic comedy but I found the seriousness of their situations anything but funny. There are light moments with fun and flirty banter, heartbreaking revelations, and ultimately a downward spiral when their relationship is exposed to the people in charge. Kade and Vicky become one another’s support system although Kade continues to act upon his addiction, playing a game with the centre’s staff.

The world building looks at the couple’s struggle, both individually and together, through therapy, their relationship and the aftermath of their short-lived affair. We get a glimpse into Vicky’s need for love, and Kade’s addiction for $ex and the short -lived high. Several chapters focus on Vicky’s journal as she writes to ‘Jane Austen’ about the hardships of love.

There is plenty of sexual tension between our leading couple knowing that to give into temptation is completely defeating the purpose of their rehab. Kade’s slow seduction of Vicky Sullivan is played out throughout the story and their weeks at the centre.

COUNTING ON YOU is a moving story line about two people pushed together by circumstance and fate. The premise is playful but dramatic; the characters are colorful, dynamic but broken; the romance is passionate but forbidden.

Review:

Silver Silence by Nalini Singh was another fantastic read in her Psy/Changeling series, which is now in a 2nd arc,Psy/Changeling Trinity.  Upon completing the book, I was thrilled to feel that though we have newer characters, the main element of Changelings , Psy and Humans remains and thus we have many more super stories to come in this fabulous world.

In Silver Silence, which takes place in Moscow, Silver Mercant is our heroine, and a Psy. Silver, is a stone cold psy, still ruled by Silence, and is the heir apparent leader of the Mercant family; the director of the new EmNet (worldwide emergency response network), and she works for Kaleb Krychek.

Valentin Nikolaev, our hero, is a bear changeling and the alpha of the Stonewater Bears. Valentin is obsessed with Silver, and is determined to find a way to get her to feel something for him.  When he makes an appearance at her home, bringing business papers, she collapses.  Valentin will get immediate help and in the process will save Silver’s life.

Between Silver’s grandmother, Valentin and Kaleb, the decision is made to protect Silver, who was poisoned, and help her recuperate by going to Denhome,  Valentin’s territory with the bears.  They will protect her with their lives, especially Valentin, and the Mercants will investigate who is behind the attempt on Silver’s life.

What follows is the continuing of the war dividing the peace accord between Changelings/Psy and Humans.  There are two factions (Consortium-HAPMA) that threaten the peace accord (Alliance, Trinity Accord, EmNet), trying to kill those deemed important to the structure , such as Silver and/or Humans willing to work with the Trinity accord. Singh’s  complex and fantastic world building gives us more to comprehend in this intriguing world that we have come to love.  What makes this story so good is watching Silver begin to feel emotions, and finds herself falling for Valentin.  This was such a beautiful romance between two people so different, and yet so right.

I loved Valentin; he was fun, sweet, protective, and determined to win her love.  He was the perfect person to slowly open up Silver to a different world.  I loved how the Stonewater Bears opened their arms to Silver, accepting her, and in time, she learns to accept and enjoy living among them. I also enjoyed getting to know Silver’s grandmother, the current powerful leader of the Mercants.  As for Silver, what an awesome heroine; I loved loved Silver, as she was tough, smart, powerful, and a true leader.  It was so emotional  to watch her cope with her feelings that began to surface. Once again, an awesome romance, with an awesome couple.

But just when our couple have found the impossible, their happiness is short lived, as things do go wrong, which brings Silver back to the emotionless life she had before.  Will she find a way to love Valentin or will she go fully back to Silence?

I have said this before, and will do so again.  Nalini Singh has become my go to author and in every single book she writes in her Psy/Changeling and Guild Hunter series, her stories never fails to captivate me; hold my interest from start to finish; giving us such wonderful characters, including the awesome couples and fantastic world-building.  I am totally in awe how Nalini can constantly create such perfection.  Bravo to Nalini Singh.  If you have not read the Psy/Changeling series (both arcs), you are seriously missing a great series and a fantastic author.

excerpt

“Laughing at the cubs’ antics, Valentin jogged down the slight incline and waded into what had to be ice-cold water after kicking off his boots and socks. He splashed the cubs, laughed when they splashed him back. Running so they could chase him, he turned abruptly and chased them back, to their unhidden joy.
Silver took a seat on the grass. When the female bear looked her way, she inclined her head in a silent greeting. The bear did the same, then they both watched an alpha bear play with two energetic cubs, his hands holding rough care for their small bodies.
By the time Valentin made his way back to her, he was drenched and his eyes weren’t human in any way. When he spoke, his already deep voice was so low it felt like thunder against her skin. “Couldn’t resist,” he said, pushing back his wet hair with one big hand. “If you weren’t in recovery and if I wasn’t in terror of Nova’s wrath, I’d have invited you. The small monsters wanted to play with you.”
Silver didn’t get to her feet. “Can we stay here a little longer?” It was patent that Valentin had an extremely high tolerance for the cold, but he might want to dry off.
“Sure,” he said, and, moving away several feet, shook off the wet.
Fine droplets settled on the skin of her cheek, but she didn’t flinch at the unintentional tactile contact. She also controlled her urge to reach up and touch the water where it lay against her skin. There was no reason to do that, and Silver was alive because she only did things that were rational.
Settling beside her, Valentin waved at the cubs as their guardian led their tired forms toward a path in the trees that was at the same level as the stream. “Gentler climb,” Valentin told her.
“They seem too exhausted to make it to Denhome.”
“It’s all an act—they’re hoping for a ride on their aunt’s back.” His tone held the same fond affection she’d heard when he spoke of Dima. “It’d take more than a few minutes’ play in the water to wipe out those two.”
The cubs had played with Valentin for almost a half hour. “They’re hyperactive?”
“They’re baby bears.”
Silver watched as those baby bears turned toward her and rose up on their back paws, as if in challenge. A stern sound from their caretaker, and they dropped down and scrambled to catch up with her. Their bodies disappeared into the trees as dusk began to turn from orange to shadowy gray.
Beside her, Valentin sprawled out, bracing himself on his elbows. His drenched T-shirt clung to the ridged muscles of his abdomen, pulled tight across his pectoral muscles, shaped itself over his shoulders. His jeans weren’t much better, outlining the raw muscle of his thighs.
Valentin Nikolaev was a man of violent physical strength even in human form. Yet he clearly had iron control over it; when he’d played with the children, they’d displayed zero fear of their alpha.
“You thought about where you’re going to live when you escape the bears who’ve kidnapped you?”
When she raised an eyebrow at him, he grinned. “Fringe netter with his own Internet channel sent out a breaking report last night. Pasha—who obviously needs more work duties—made up a fake account and posted a comment swearing to have seen you being pulled into a black van by six burly bears in bear form.”
“You don’t seem too concerned.” Amber eyes and deep voice, he remained very much a bear in human form.
“Well, according to this ‘eyewitness,’ the getaway driver was in bear form, too. Must’ve been tough for him to steer with one paw since he was drinking a beer at the same time.”
“Bears,” Silver said, making Valentin throw his head back and laugh that huge laugh that wrapped around her.

About the author
Nalini Singh
I was born in Fiji and raised in New Zealand. I spent three years living and working in Japan, where I took the chance to travel around Asia. I’m back in New Zealand now, but I’m always plotting new trips. If you’d like to see some of my travel snapshots, have a look at the Travel Diary page.

I’ve worked as a lawyer, a librarian, a candy factory general hand, a bank temp and an English teacher, but not necessarily in that order. Some might call that inconsistency, but I call it grist for the writer’s mill.

I’ve been writing for as long as I can remember. All of my stories held a thread of romance, even when I was writing about a prince who could shoot lasers out of his eyes. Creating unique characters and giving them happy endings is my favorite thing. I even love the voices in my head, so there’s no other job I’d rather be doing. When I got the call in September 2002 that Silhouette Desire wanted to buy my first book, Desert Warrior, it was a dream come true. I hope to continue living the dream until I keel over of old age on my keyboard.
