ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date May 29, 2017

Matthew Hansen is the kind of handsome that has grown women whispering behind their hands and giggling like schoolgirls. Dark, tall and mysterious, he’s a newcomer to our little town. He’s a gritty, grease-covered mechanic, and a single daddy.
Sweet, right? Plus he’s looking for a nanny – and I am desperately looking for a job.
Sounds like the perfect deal.

Only he’s a jerk. An uncivilized, hulking brute. Zero manners. Zero interest in making me feel welcome in his home. Downright rude. But oh so sexy. And I need the job. I can do this. One thing is for sure: I can’t fall for the Caveman. No matter how sexy he is. How mysterious. How tortured.

That’s the only rule – and one I’m about to break.

••••••••••

REVIEW:  CAVEMAN by Jo Raven is a stand alone, contemporary, new adult to adult, erotic, romantic suspense story line focusing on thirty year old auto mechanic and single father Matthew Hansen, and eighteen year old Octavia Watson. Although a stand alone, the leading hero Matthew Hansen was first introduced as Zane’s brother-in-law in the author’s Inked Brotherhood series.

Told from dual first person points of view (Matt and Octavia) CAVEMAN follows the acrimonious relationship between single father of two Matt Hansen, and his new nanny Octavia Watson. Matt is in desperate need of childcare but his antagonistic and acerbic personality all but screams serial killer and psychotic beast. Octavia longs to attend college but her family’s lack of income and her mother’s less than stellar small town reputation forces our heroine to look for any job that will help pay the bills. Enter Matt Hansen, mechanic, single father, and uncivilized jerk who reluctantly allows Octavia Watson to care for his kids. But someone is threatening everyone Matt loves, including the woman who now calls to his heart, and the threats are becoming more personal and dangerous as his relationship with Octavia grows. What ensues is the building relationship between Matt and Octavia, and the alarming threats against the Hansen’s family.

The relationship between Matt and Octavia begins as a reluctant business arrangement. Matt isn’t happy about the sexy, new nanny: she’s too young, too beautiful and calls to everything Matt has buried since the death of his wife. Matt is an angry, antagonistic, hostile male who believes he has failed as a husband and a father. His attraction to Octavia finds Matt pushing at the boundaries of both their professional arrangement, and the older man-younger woman scenario. The $ex scenes are intimate, erotic and intense.

There is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters including Octavia’s sister Augusta, and her brother Mercury, as well as their long-suffering mother; Matt’s children Mary and Cole; and an assortment of co-workers who treat Olivia with too much disdain. The requisite evil, of whom I deduced early on, is set on revenge targeting Olivia and the children, in the process.

The world building focuses on the small town of Destiny, Missouri; the town gossip, the rumors, the lowlife and the scum. Matthew Hansen’s appearance becomes fodder for the meddling neighbors; Octavia’s relationship with Matt is targeted by someone from the past.

I did have some issues with the quick resolution to the story line conflict: too fast, too few details, and too easily deduced. There were also several unanswered questions, or at the very least, too many loose ends without follow up or resolution. And Matthew’s ongoing pining for the loss of his wife would have sent most women running the other direction. Like the heroine, the reader will have to look past the angry and broken façade to know there is a broken heart and wounded soul desperate for love.

CAVEMAN is slow to build because of the acrimonious relationship between the leading couple. Matt’s anger and emotional attitude is disheartening but somewhat understandable-everyone handles grief differently and in their own time. The premise is heartbreaking, suspenseful and impassioned; the romance is flawed, edgy and energetic; the characters are tragic and colorful; the secondary characters are destructive and damaged. CAVEMAN is an emotional story line, a small town romance between two people whose lives will collide when the past comes back looking for revenge.

Claim & ProtectAmazon / B&N / Kobo / BAM / Book Depository

When Natalie’s ex resurfaces to threaten her new life, Trevor will move heaven and earth to make sure the bastard can’t hurt her again. Except saving Natalie means outing his own secrets—and it could mean losing her forever…

Review:

Claim & Protect by Rhenna Morgan is the 3rd book in her wonderful Men of Haven series. I love this series, and Rhenna Morgan just keeps on giving us another sensational story focusing on the hot hunky Men of Haven.  The women who tames their hearts  are tough, independent and pretty cool themselves.  Each book has had great couples, and there is so much more to come.

In Claim & Protect, Trevor Raines is our hero, and he wins our heart almost immediately.  Trevor owns a bar in Dallas, and has a large ranch he calls home.  One night at the bar, Trevor is hanging around his ‘brothers’, when he notices one of his new hires is breaking a ‘no phone’ rule during working hours.

Natalie Jordan, our heroine, needs her job, but she has some issues at home.  When Trevor approaches her about using the phone, she tells him that her mother is taking care of her 7 year old son, and her ex was giving her a hard time.  Trevor tells her to go home to be with her son, and he will make exceptions to his rule.  However, sensing something more, Trevor decides to check on Natalie at her home, and comes upon the abusive ex forcing his way into their house.  Trevor manages to arrive just in time and introduces himself as Natalie’s new boyfriend, which temporarily will make the ex leave.

Trevor convinces Natalie to go along with the ruse to keep her ex at bay, and despite both of them not wanting any relationship, things will slowly change.  Natalie finds herself very attracted to Trevor, but feels she is not his type.  Her son, Levi, immediately loves being around the cool, smart, savvy Trevor, to the point of hero worship and learning about horses on his ranch. Trevor, having watched Jace and Zeke (in previous books) fall in love, doesn’t plan on falling in love.  However, emotions are hard to control; especially with a woman & a boy, who begin to call to his heart

The romance between Natalie and Trevor becomes hot and steamy, which Morgan does very well.  Though there were a lot of sex scenes, it did not take away from the story, which was wonderful.  What follows is Trevor doing all he can to stop Natalie’s ex, and getting his “brothers’ to help.  Natalie does not want to lose custody of Levi, which her well connected ex threatens to do.  But the men of the Haven Brotherhood are more powerful, and together they will stop the ex from trying to frame Trevor in illegal drugs, and turn the table against him.

This was an exciting, and emotional storyline, especially revolving around Natalie and Levi.  The sexual chemistry between Trevor and Natalie was off the wall sizzling, and I loved them together.  Another sensational couple that Morgan has created, and it was sweet, sexy and beautiful to watch them realize that they were falling in love.    What makes this series great, are the wonderful characters that make up the Men of Haven , and the woman who become part of it.  Levi was a great addition to the story, and elevated the emotional heartwarming element.  Claim & Protect continues the trend of fantastic stories among the men of the Men of Haven.   Rhenna Morgan continues to rise up in becoming an author I cannot wait to read. You need to be reading this series.

AN UNNATURAL VICE ( Sins of the Cities #2) by KJ Charles

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date June 6, 2017

In the sordid streets of Victorian London, unwanted desire flares between two bitter enemies brought together by a deadly secret.

Crusading journalist Nathaniel Roy is determined to expose spiritualists who exploit the grief of bereaved and vulnerable people. First on his list is the so-called Seer of London, Justin Lazarus. Nathaniel expects him to be a cheap, heartless fraud. He doesn’t expect to meet a man with a sinful smile and the eyes of a fallen angel—or that a shameless swindler will spark his desires for the first time in years.

Justin feels no remorse for the lies he spins during his séances. His gullible clients simply bore him. Hostile, disbelieving, utterly irresistible Nathaniel is a fascinating challenge. And as their battle of wills and wits heats up, Justin finds he can’t stop thinking about the man who’s determined to ruin him.

But Justin and Nathaniel are linked by more than their fast-growing obsession with one another. They are both caught up in an aristocratic family’s secrets, and Justin holds information that could be lethal. As killers, fanatics, and fog close in, Nathaniel is the only man Justin can trust—and, perhaps, the only man he could love.

••••••••••

REVIEW: AN UNNATURAL VICE is the second installment in KJ Charles’s adult, Victorian, historical Sins of the Cities M/M romance, murder-mystery series. This is journalist and former lawyer Nathaniel Roy, and Seer of London Justin Lazarus’s story line. AN UNNATURAL VICE can be read as a stand alone but for cohesion and backstory I recommend reading the series in order as there is an ongoing premise and plot throughout the series. Some of the events of An Unnatural Vice cross over and run parallel to the events of book one-An Unseen Attraction

NOTE: AN UNNATURAL VICE and the SINS OF THE CITIES series contain scenes of M/M sexual situations and may not be suitable for all readers.

Told from dual third person points of view (Justin and Nathaniel) AN UNNATURAL VICE follows the enemies to lovers relationship between the Seer of London (Medium) Justin Lazarus, and journalist Nathaniel Roy. Nathaniel’s latest assignment is to uncover the truth behind self-proclaimed Seer Justin Lazarus-a proclamation Nathaniel is determined to prove fraudulent and deceitful. But Justin has information that could prove helpful to Nathaniel’s friend Clem Talleyfer (An Unseen Attraction #1) as the group of friends endeavors to find the missing heir to the Taillefer fortune and title holder to the Earl of Moreton. What ensues are Justin and Nathaniel’s attempts to stay one step ahead of the people hired to destroy any evidence of an heir, and Justin and Nathaniel’s growing love between two people whose lives follow different paths towards the future.

The relationship between Nathaniel and Justin is slow to build. Their acrimonious but tepid friendship requires cooperation when Justin is targeted by someone in control; Nathaniel is determined to protect the man with whom he is falling in love sweeping his lover to a secreted location fearing for their lives. The $ex scenes are intimate and provocative without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

AN UNNATURAL VICE follows the search for the missing heir, although most of the investigation is behind the scenes as the story line focuses on our leading couple. The requisite evil has many faces but the ultimate villain has yet to be revealed.

The world building continues to look at the friendships and relationships of a group of ‘gay’ men in Victorian, England although AN UNNATURAL VICE primarily focuses on Nathaniel and Justin’s struggle to stay alive. Once again, the tone of the story is not conducive to the era or the time-I was expecting a tighter interpretation of the language e.g. euphemisms, slang, sentence structure, and because of this, the story line reads more modern than historic (see my review of book one). The back and forth banter between Justin and Nathaniel is witty and entertaining. The premise is much more detailed and descriptive than the first installment as the author brings to life the dreary and wretched world of Victorian England; the characters are colorful and dynamic although I would have liked more information about Nathaniel’s earlier years; the romance is seductive and intense. AN UNNATURAL VICE is an entertaining story line; a fast paced and intriguing story of mystery, suspense, romance and love.

An Unseen AttractionABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date February 21, 2017

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / B&N / KOBO / Chapters Indigo /

Lodging-house keeper Clem Talleyfer prefers a quiet life. He’s happy with his hobbies, his work—and especially with his lodger Rowley Green, who becomes a friend over their long fireside evenings together. If only neat, precise, irresistible Mr. Green were interested in more than friendship…

Rowley just wants to be left alone—at least until he meets Clem, with his odd, charming ways and his glorious eyes. Two quiet men, lodging in the same house, coming to an understanding… it could be perfect. Then the brutally murdered corpse of another lodger is dumped on their doorstep and their peaceful life is shattered.

Now Clem and Rowley find themselves caught up in a mystery, threatened on all sides by violent men, with a deadly London fog closing in on them. If they’re to see their way through, the pair must learn to share their secrets—and their hearts.

•••••••••••

REVIEW: AN UNSEEN ATTRACTION is the first installment in KJ Charles’s adult, SINS OF THE CITY Victorian, M/M, historical romance, murder-mystery series. This is lodging-house keeper Clem Talleyfer, and stuffer (taxidermist) Rowley Green’s story line.

NOTE: AN UNSEEN ATTRACTION contains scenes of M/M sexual situations and may not be suitable for all readers.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Clem and Rowley) AN UNSEEN ATTRACTION follows two paths and focuses on the forbidden relationship between two men: lodging-house keeper Clem Talleyfer, and taxidermist Rowley Green. The year is 1873, and Clem Talleyfer manages, on behalf of his brother, a lodging house for single men. Enter Rowley Green, the local taxidermist, and the man who has caught the eye of the lodging-house manager. When one of the tenants disappears and is found dead several days later, Clem and Rowley face the wrath of not only the local law enforcement but Clem’s brother as well. What ensues is the investigation into the who, what and why, and the building but forbidden love between two men caught in a game of secrets and lies.

AN UNSEEN ATTRACTION is a slow building story line; a murder /mystery plot where our leading couple find themselves targeted for reasons unknown. As the investigation grows, so too does the realization that the person(s) responsible is all too familiar to the lodging house manager.

The relationship between Clem and Rowley is one of immediate attraction but the fear of the unknown and public scrutiny have kept their relationship at a slow burn for several months. When Rowley invites Clem for an evening out, Clem soon realizes that his attraction to the local taxidermist is one of mutual want and need. The $ex scenes are intimate and seductive without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

AN UNSEEN ATTRACTION is, first and foremost, a story of murder, mystery and suspense. Clem and Rowley’s backstories are heartbreaking; family history is something no one wants to share. The slow reveal of clues is well paced; the identity of the person ultimately responsible was (for me) easily deduced early on. The language and text is simple; the tone of the story is not conducive to the era or the time-I was expecting a tighter interpretation of the language e.g. euphemisms, slang, sentence structure, and because of this, the story line reads more modern than historic. The premise is entertaining; the characters are colorful and energetic; the romance is sweet and seductive.

Review:

A Dog Like Daisy by Kristine O’Donnell Tubb is a story told in the perspective of a rescue dog.  This book is marked for middle grade, but do not let this stop you from reading this book, as I totally loved it.  I did not know what to expect when I decided to read this, and I am so glad I did.  I loved Daisy, a rescued two year old pit bull, who is being trained to be a service dog.  The entire book is in the POV of Daisy, and it was so well written by Kristin O’Donnell Tubb.

We meet Daisy immediately when she is in the pound.  When three humans, walk in looking at all the dogs, one of them looks at her and says she is the one; but the other two are not too keen on the choice. Victor, a veteran who had PTSD, is the one who sees a bond with Daisy, who also recognizes that this man is the one she needs to protect.  Micah is Victor’s son, and he wanted a puppy; the other man, Alex is a trainer for service dogs. Alex tries to convince Victor that they only have 10 weeks to train Daisy and she might not be a good fit, but Victor is adamant about our sweet Miss Daisy.

When they arrive home, Daisy meets Annie the wife, and their baby, as well as seeing more of Micah, who really doesn’t want him.  What follows is a beautiful heartwarming, and intense at times story of Daisy determined to learn everything to be a good service dog, as well as to protect Victor from his horrible bouts with PTSD.  The story shows the family’s struggles with Victor’s nightmares, which is dangerous, scary and out of control at times.  All this is through the eyes of Daisy, who begins to see the signs quickly when Victor is ready to go off.

Another nice part of the story is Micah trying to understand his father, and at times jealous that Daisy seems to be getting closer to his father.  But it is sweet and emotional when Micah realizes later on how special Daisy was.

A Dog Like Daisy was to my surprise a wonderful touching and delightful story, as we follow Daisy throughout and listen to her thoughts.  Thank you, Kristin O’Donnell Tubb for this amazing story.  I loved every moment of it. So very well done.

SWORN TO PROTECT (Rescue Ops #1) by Diana Gardin-a review

Sworn to Protect

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / B&N / KOBO / Chapters Indigo /

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date June 4,2 017

To keep her safe, he’ll have to uncover all her secrets…

Rayne Alexander. A face I never thought I’d see again, and one I never could forget. Nine years ago, she left town-and me–without a backward glance. But now she’s back, with a haunted look in her eyes and a feisty attitude that didn’t exist when we were teenagers. Seeing this grown-up–and sexy–Rayne is something I wasn’t prepared for… and it’s bringing up feelings I’d thought I’d buried years ago.

Although I want to demand answers from Rayne, working on black ops at Night Eagle Security has taught me that it’s sometimes better to keep my mouth shut. So when I catch her hiding a photo of a little boy, I’m curious. When I see her jump as her phone rings, I’m concerned. But the second I notice a car following her home, I know she’s hiding something. Something dangerous. And while I may not know why she left or why she’s back, if there’s someone out there Rayne is afraid of, I’ll make damn sure that threat is eliminated.

•••••••••

REVIEW: SWORN TO PROTECT is the first installment in Diana Gardin’s contemporary, adult RESCUE OPS romantic, suspense series focusing on the men and women of Night Eagle Security-a security company made up of former members of the military including Special Forces, Navy SEALS, and Army Rangers who specialize in personal security as well as working for some governmental agencies. This is Jeremy ‘Brains’ Teagues, and PA Rayne Alexander’s story line. The Rescue Ops series is a spin off from the author’s Battle Scars series, and several characters cross-over for cohesion and familiarity. You do not have to have read the original series to follow SWORN TO PROTECT. Any important information from the previous series is revealed where necessary.

Told from three first person perspectives including Jeremy and Rayne, SWORN TO PROTECT is a second chance story line that focuses on protecting Rayne Alexander. Rayne is on the run having uncovered some disturbing information about her former boss. Landing back home in Wilmington, North Carolina our heroine will come face to face with her past-a past she thought she had left behind-but a past that is with her every moment of her life. Enter Jeremy Teagues, security specialist and former Special Forces soldier, who has never stopped loving the woman who disappeared years before. What ensues is the rekindling romance between Jeremy and Rayne, and the struggle to protect Rayne, and someone she loves.

Almost nine years earlier Rayne Alexander dropped out of sight, and out of Jeremy Teagues’ life. Fast forward to present day, and our hero is determined to uncover the truth behind Rayne’s disappearance but in order to ensure her safety, Jeremy becomes the over protective male in our heroine’s life. But Rayne Alexander has a secret-one that could destroy her relationship with the man that she has always loved-or a secret that could pull together the family she has always wanted. With issues of trust, Rayne doesn’t know if Jeremy is the man for the job.

The relationship between Jeremy and Rayne is one of second chances; a reawakening of a love that was destroyed by secrets, betrayal, lies and power. The $ex scenes are intimate, intense and seductive. Their reunion and revelations of secrets is emotional and heartbreaking.

We are introduced to Jeremy’s team of security specialists at Night Eagle Security headed by Jacob Owen; Dare Conner and his girlfriend Berkley, and ex-SEAL Grisham Abbot and his fiancé Greta from the Battle Scars series, as well as Ronin Shaw; Rayne’s next door neighbor Macy and her son Julius, Decker James, Night and Rayne’s sister Olive who has some secrets of her own. The requisite evil has many faces including a twist to the story line that I detected early on.

The world building follows the friendships, camaraderie, and working relationships of the men and women of Night Eagle Security: their close knit devotion to one another, and their willingness to go above and beyond for the people they love.

SWORN TO PROTECT is a suspense filled, action packed, intense story line about two people whose lives were torn apart by power and greed. The premise is engaging and energetic; the characters are spirited, colorful and charismatic; the romance is captivating and sensual. Diana Gardin is a new to me author; SWORN TO PROTECT is my first story and will not be my last.

An Interview with Model/Musician Justin Edwards

An INTERVIEW with Model / Musician Justin Edwards

TRC: Hi Justin, and welcome to The Reading Café.

Justin Scott Edwards 3Justin: Hi. Thank you!

TRC: We would like to start with some background information. Would you pleasetell us something about yourself?

Follow Justin: Instagram / Facebook / Twitter

Justin: Most of my life I have been a competitive athlete. I grew up as as gymnast and martial artist, also playing football, basketball, and playing baseball for a top collegiate program through college.

TRC: What were your dreams and aspirations growing up?

Justin: I wanted to be a professional baseball player, or an entertainer, from the time I can remember.

TRC: When not modeling what is your ‘day job’?

Justin: I’m a musician/entertainer, and a personal trainer.

TRC: What first sparked your interest in modeling? Is there a defining moment where you knew that modeling was something you were interested in pursuing?

Justin Scott Edwards cover 1Justin: There’s probably not really that one moment that sparked an interest. I really just fell into fashion and commercial modeling through singing and playing music.

TRC: Have you ever had a photo shoot that went completely wrong?

Justin: There’s always plenty of bloopers and mishaps, especially with me because I’m a big goofball, but none that I recall going completely wrong.

TRC: Nudity in modeling or acting can be controversial. Some pictures can cross the line between sexuality to pornography. What would you tell young models/actors /body builders just entering the business about nude modeling and photography?

Justin: My best advice would be to do only what you are personally comfortable with doing. There will always be critics, and those with different views. That’s life…but life is too short to worry about what everyone else thinks. Be happy.

TRC: The modeling industry exposes you to many people and sometimes it can be very stressful. At times do you feel alone, surrounded by so many people? What do you do when the stress becomes overwhelming?

Justin Scott Edwards 5Justin: I have gotten to meet so many great people through modeling, and have gained a lot of new friends. It does get hard to keep up at times, but I have a great circle of close friends who are very supportive.

TRC: At times, there has been a ‘stigma’ surrounding the male model and the romance-cover industry but the popularity of the romance story line has skyrocketed in the last few years especially with the erotic and sensual cover images. What is your opinion about the recent popularity and the very busy industry of the ‘romance cover model’?

Justin: I think it’s great! I have been able to see so many places, and meet so many people over the last couple years. Some will be lifelong friends with whom I will share lifelong memories. To some degree, it has become more like a brotherhood…a family.

TRC: What do you do to prepare yourself for a shoot?

Justin: I usually just cut out all junk food for a few days.lol I stay in pretty good shape being a personal trainer and athletic coach, so don’t have to do much to get my abs back. 😉

TRC: Do you know the number of novel covers that your image has appeared?

Justin: Hmm…I really don’t know. I’d say probably less than 100 novel covers.

TRC: Do you remember the first cover (book or magazine) on which you appeared?

JJustin Scott Edwards Cover 2ustin: My first book cover (Romance Novel) was ‘Wicked’ by Jennifer L. Armentrout. I don’t recall the first publication, or magazine. I’ve been in many more fashion and commercial publications than I have Romance novel covers.

TRC: Would you please tell us what you do to relax?

Justin: Usually goof off and joke around. Also, drink flavored water. *Some will understand that one.J

TRC: What three things would you like to accomplish in the next five years?

Justin:
#1- Record (writing or recording artist).
#2- Own 3 of my own gyms (currently working on my first).
#3- Complete my novel.

TRC: What is something that few, if anybody, knows about you?

Justin: I’m a Sci-Fi Nerd!

TRC: What do you believe is the biggest misconception about modeling ?

Justin: Probably that most models aren’t intelligent. A lot of us are well educated, and some of us speak up to 5 languages. Some of the most intelligent, and uniquely diverse people I have met have been in the modeling and entertainment industry.

TRC: What type of music do you listen to? Perform? and what is on your playlist today?

Justin: I mostly listen to oldies, classic country, classic rock, and rockabilly. I perform all of those genres, as well as some good dance/pop tunes for certain venues.

Justin Edwrds 6TRC: On what on your currently working?

Justin: I’m currently working toward moving into entertainment full time, and growing my health & fitness business.

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Justin: I’d just like to thank everyone who works hard to bring each cover to life! Aside from the novel itself, there’s a lot that goes into bringing these books to life. Also, a huge thank you to all of the readers and fans! Without y’all, this industry wouldn’t exist!!

How to Ruin your Reputation in Ten Days by Harmony Williams – a Review

How to Ruin your Reputation in Ten Days by Harmony Williams – a Review

How to Ruin Your Reputation in 10 DaysAmazon / B&N / Kobo / BAM / Book Depository

Description:
In 1814 London, England, a lady is defined as a demure, delicate flower. Miss Francine Annesley is not that lady. If men were like plants, she would have a garden of admirers to choose from instead of the thorn in her side since childhood, Julian Beckwith. But she would make an even worse nun than she does a lady, which will be her fate if she can’t dig up a husband before the Season ends. However, Julian is not an option.

With only ten short days left in the Season, Francine doesn’t have time to waste on petty squabbles or knee-weakening kisses, even if Julian’s offer to fulfill her every wish rouses her curiosity. It seems men are more complicated than plants. Too bad love bloomed at the most inconvenient of times…

Review:

How to Ruin Your Reputation in Ten Days begins with only ten days left in the Season.  Francine is attending a party at which her parents are hoping that she finds an appropriate suitor.  After five Seasons without an offer, their hopes of her picking someone are faltering.  Francine is determined not to enter into a loveless relationship with someone who is more interested in her dowry than they are in her.  As Francine skirts the people and their boring conversations at the party trying to get away from unwanted suitors, she makes her way outside and into the garden.  She soon finds herself in an awkward position and snags her dress on a thorny bush and eventually gets herself freed, only to come face to face with none other than her childhood friend, Julian Beckwith.  The two of them had been exchanging letters for the last few years, but he suddenly stopped replying, which hurt her more than she wanted to let on.

As things progress, there is no denying the pull between them, but when Francine discovers the reason he stopped replying to her letters, she is shattered.  To make matters even worse, her father has had it with her not choosing a suitor and issues an ultimatum:  pick a suitable suitor by the end of the Season or you’re going to the convent!  (Harsh much?!?!)  Seems he’s had it with her independent ways and the fact the she always seems to get caught in the most awkward and inappropriate situations.  Unfortunately, said situations have made her the gossip of the ton, and her father is DONE.

How to Ruin Your Reputation in Ten Days is a nicely written tale with two great characters.  I loved Francine.  I loved her independent streak that warred with her wanting to please her parents, who in my opinion, were sorely lacking in the parenting department.  I also loved her devotion to her friends and to Julian.  She also made me laugh.  Julian was great as well.  Once we find out the back story as to why he’d stopped responding to her letters, your heart broke a little.  You also wanted to box his ears a little!  The two of them together will melt your heart.  With all of that said, I have to admit that the story I’m most anxious for is her friend, Mary’s.  That one has great potential and I can’t imagine how she’ll be tamed, seeing as she is one of the most inappropriate (for the time) and independent characters I’ve read in years.  I have my fingers crossed that her story will not disappoint.  If you’re a fan of historicals, this series is a nice read.   Well done, Harmony Williams!

When Life Happened teaser

excerpt

“You … you tried to seduce me.” Anger fueled her fight, overriding how terrified she felt being feet from naked Gus.
He laughed. That fed her anger even more.
“I wasn’t seducing you. I was making a point.” He slipped on a white T-shirt.
“Bullshit. I was there.”
“Precisely. Then you should know that I wasn’t seducing you.” He grabbed her shoulders and steered her away from the entrance to his closet.
She turned, relieved to find him dressed. “I felt you.” Her eyes narrowed.
He smirked. “You did, did you?”
Heat spread up her neck and burned her cheeks. Discussing Gus’s erection in his bedroom with Sabrina out of town qualified as the most inappropriate conversation she had ever had. “You’re such an ass. Just tell me why?”
Twisting his lips to the side, he narrowed his eyes. “You’re young. You think the world is so black and white. In your fairy-tale world, love is a magic wand spreading trails of glitter and granting happily ever afters.”
Parker stepped closer, knowing the lion could pull her into his den. “I don’t believe in fairytales.”
“No?” He shrugged. “Then I guess I made my point.”
“I don’t get your stupid point!” Her fingernails dug into her hands as she clenched them.
Gus leaned forward, putting them at eye level. She held her ground, even though his proximity made her body tremble.
“Someone cheated on you. And you’re so fucking mad about it because you can’t understand it. But love is an emotion that resides in your head and your proverbial heart. It has to be nurtured to grow or it dies. But … desire … it’s instinctual. Physical. Carnal. And when it wants its way, your brain shuts down and the only heart you hear is that blood-pumping organ in your chest. A slave to your desire, readying your body to do one thing and one thing only …” He leaned into her ear and whispered, “Get. Off.”
August Westman proved he was the devil. Parker became the worst possible version of herself in his presence. He drugged her with his words, pulled her under with his confidence, and stole her innocence with a whisper.
