ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date June 6, 2017

She’ll love him forever . . . but he can’t make her obey . . .

The war is over. Danger has passed. Cara Kayrs is healed after decades of illness and ready for a break.

Too bad her brooding, alpha vampire husband can’t seem to change gears. In their twenty-five years together Talen Kayrs has learned to sense every shiver of her body, to ignite her desire with a word or a look. She would think he could learn she’s not some fragile damsel in distress.

But Talen is on edge, watching their backs, treating her like she’s made of glass. Like there’s something following them, a deadly threat that somehow none of their intelligence has uncovered. It’s enough to drive a woman crazy, and Talen has plenty of those tendencies already.

But what’s even more maddening is that he seems to be right

•••••••••

NOTE: TALEN was originally released as a bonus novella in Rebecca’s WICKED BURN (Realm Enforcers #3). If you have not read book seven of the Dark Protectors series-MARKED-there may be some spoilers in TALEN and my review.

REVIEW: TALEN by Rebecca Zanetti is installment 7.9 in the author’s DARK PROTECTORS paranormal romance series and revisits the original Dark Protectors couple Talen and Cara Kayrs. TALEN can be read as a stand alone but for cohesion and backstory I recommend reading the series in order as the story line picks up following the events of book seven-MARKED:

SOME BACKGROUND: The Kayrs family rules not only the vampire nation, but also the Realm, which is a coalition of vampires, shifters, and witches. Years ago, an evil vampire race called the Kurjans declared war on the Realm by creating a deadly virus that infects vampire mates. The virus attacks chromosomal pairs and takes mates from immortal to human, potentially leading to death.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Talen and Cara) TALEN revisits vampire warrior Talen Kayrs, and his mate of twenty five years Cara Paulsen-Kayrs. Now that the war is over, another danger threatens our leading couple. With the cure for the virus found, Cara and Talen have been tasked with transporting some important samples to a research lab but the Demons have targeted our couple for reasons unknown. As Talen and Cara battle the demons, they are also facing the wildfires that are growing out of control. What ensues are Cara and Talen’s attempts to stay clear of the demons while Talen struggles to protect his mate-a woman who is determined to protect those she loves.

TALEN is a story line that reconnects with many of Rebecca’s paranormal series and story lines characters and couples with the appearance of Logan (vampire/demon hybrid), and Cara and Talen’s son Garrett (Realm Enforcers), and their daughter Janie Kayrs (Dark Protectors/Marked): Max Petrovsky ( Dark Protectors/Tempted); and shifters Terrent and Maggie (Dark Protectors /Twisted). The seamless interconnection between series allows the readers a second look at some of our favorite characters.

TALEN is a short, sexy, action packed novella. The premise is entertaining and spicy; the characters are familiar, passionate and colorful; the romance continues to be seductive and hot. TALEN is a must read for fans of Rebecca’s DARK PROTECTORS and REALM ENFORCERS series.

excerpt

Talen couldn’t shake the itch between his shoulder blades. Taking
his mate from the safety of their headquarters didn’t set well with
him, and his muscles tensed in one long line.
“Would you relax?” she whispered from the passenger seat, her
head back on the leather and her eyes closed in pleased abandonment.
Her legs were up on the dash, her feet in little sandals that
showed off bright pink toenails. Sexy and pink. Her long auburn hair
cascaded over her shoulders, and he fought the urge to tug on a
strand.
The woman was right. The war had ended, and he really did need
to relax. He watched the road outside and yet kept a close eye on his
woman out of his peripheral vision. “It occurs to me that you think
things have changed.”
She opened her eyelids then . . . her eyes a stunning blue. “Huh?”
He cleared his throat and made sure her seat belt was firmly
around her small body. “The war is over, you’re well, and you think
things are different.” In fact, his woman hadn’t been healthy since
right after they’d mated, and for years, he’d been more than gentle
with her. At the thought that she was whole, finally, his heart started
to thrum.
“Of course things are different.” She gestured out with one arm.
“We’re on a road trip, without guards, without death hanging over
our heads.” Her laugh was throaty and full. “Emma and I are taking
a Vegas trip next month for a girls’ weekend.”
“Absolutely not.”
She gaped. “I did not ask permission, Kayrs.”
He bit back a wince. Whenever Cara used his last name, he was
about to end up in the doghouse. Yet she was no longer vulnerable or
weak, and he was finished placating her. “Mate? I have no intention
of allowing you to go anywhere for a girls’ anything.” The second the
word allow was out of his mouth, the tension in the car ratcheted up
several degrees.
“Oh, you did not,” she sputtered, her eyes narrowing.
He sighed and turned to pin her with a look. He’d forgotten her
stubbornness in the last difficult years when she’d been fighting a
deadly virus that had almost taken her life. Now that she was healthy,
memories of their first months together, before she had become
infected, filtered through his mind. “I was fairly certain I tamed you
way back when,” he said thoughtfully.
Red infused her face. “I’m about to kick your ass, Kayrs.”
Maybe not. Interesting. At the thought, his entire body tightened,
and his cock started to throb. “Cara.”
Her shiver enticed him. “What?”
“I strongly advise you not to push me.” It was only fair to warn
her, and he went on instinct. After nearly dying when the war had
ended, he’d been restless since. For so many years, he’d treated his
mate with more gentleness than he would’ve thought possible as
she’d endured the virus.
Now that she was healthy, a primal part of him, one much closer
to the surface than he liked, wanted to claim her again with all the
dominance that was inherent to his species. “Okay?”
She breathed out. “Oh, mate. You’re the one who needs to stop
pushing.”
He reached out, catching the long strands of her hair before she
could avoid him. Her eyes widened, and he twisted his wrist with
enough pressure to tilt back her head, fighting instincts he’d forgotten
he had.
Curiosity and desire spilled from her.
His nostrils flared, catching his mate’s scent. It had been too long
since they’d both been whole and healthy. He’d forgotten her defiant
nature and how much she liked to challenge him. “Maybe this trip
was a good idea,” he said softly, the beast inside him raging as her
lids half-lowered.

Words in Deep Blue by Cath Crowley – a Review

Words in Deep BlueAmazon / B&N / Kobo / BAM / Book Depository

Description:
Years ago, Rachel had a crush on Henry Jones. The day before she moved away, she tucked a love letter into his favorite book in his family’s bookshop. She waited. But Henry never came.

Now Rachel has returned to the city—and to the bookshop—to work alongside the boy she’d rather not see, if at all possible, for the rest of her life. But Rachel needs the distraction. Her brother drowned months ago, and she can’t feel anything anymore.

As Henry and Rachel work side by side—surrounded by books, watching love stories unfold, exchanging letters between the pages—they find hope in each other. Because life may be uncontrollable, even unbearable sometimes. But it’s possible that words, and love, and second chances are enough

Review:

Words in Deep Blue by Cath Crowley is a YA novel.  There is no dystopian story, no adventure, no exciting mystery or even a teen runaway story.  Words of Deep Blue is a contemporary novel of a teen age girl who tries to overcome her grief over the death of her brother, and learn to carry on with her life; it is also a story of how words and books can play a large part of lives.

Rachel Sweetie returns to the town she left 3 years before, where her friends Lola and Henry still live.  Rachel left town with her family, having left a love letter in a book for Henry to find; but he never saw the letter and Rachel assumed he wasn’t interested.  So when she returns home, she hides her grief over the drowning death of her brother Cal, and tells no one of his death.

She takes a job working at the Howling Book store, where Henry helps his father run the story.  Henry always considered Rachel his best friend, but could never understand why she stopped writing to him during those three years.  I enjoyed Rachel’s character; her grief and pain made her a better and stronger person, and in time she accepts what happened and opens up to her friends.  Rachel also knows that Henry will never get over his spoiled self centered girlfriend, Amy.   I did not like Henry, as he was so blind as to always thinking Amy cares about him, even when she dumps him, and does not even see that Rachel is not only his friend, but someone who truly loves him.

What follows is a slow built rekindling of a friendship that was lost.  It was nice that Henry and Rachel would spend so much time together in the book store, many times spending the night reading and looking at letters left behind by others.  The words spoken were what slowly brings them together, at first as friends, and later when Henry finally realizes that everything he always wanted was right in front him.  As the story unfolds, Rachel comes to terms with Cal’s death, shares her grief with her friends and family, which also brings her closer to Henry.   There were some other background stories, especially Henry’s sister, George, who leaves letters to an unknown suitor; which later is a surprise.

Words in Deep Blue was a different type of read for a YA novel, but it is truly is for everyone.  This book was emotional, uplifting, touching  and at times humorous. Rachel, and even Henry were well developed characters, as well as many of the secondary characters.  This was a nice story well written by Cath Crowley.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date May 30, 2017

Nevada Baylor has a unique and secret skill—she knows when people are lying—and she’s used that magic (along with plain, hard work) to keep her colorful and close-knit family’s detective agency afloat. But her new case pits her against the shadowy forces that almost destroyed the city of Houston once before, bringing Nevada back into contact with Connor “Mad” Rogan.

Rogan is a billionaire Prime—the highest rank of magic user—and as unreadable as ever, despite Nevada’s “talent.” But there’s no hiding the sparks between them. Now that the stakes are even higher, both professionally and personally, and their foes are unimaginably powerful, Rogan and Nevada will find that nothing burns like ice

•••••••••••

Barb’s Review:

White Hot by Ilona Andrews is the 2nd book in their Hidden Legacy series.  I am a big fan of the Ilona Andrews duo (Ilona & Gordon), having read almost all of their books.  I love the Kate Daniels series, and when I read the first book, Burn for Me, in this series, I was hooked.   White Hot is equally as good, and as I started this book, I could not stop reading, it was that great.  As always with anything that Andrews writes, I always want to savior it, but end up reading it non-stop; which does force me to go back and re-read it again.  Ok, now for my review.

Nevada Baylor and Connor “Mad”Rogan are once again our heroes.  Nevada has not heard from Rogan for months, and despite her family pressuring her to get him to marry her (He is head of his own house as a Prime, and wealthy), she ignores them and continues to run her PI firm. She is offered a case from Cornelius (a member of another house) to find out who murdered his wife, and despite her concerns, she does accept.  This will bring Mad Rogan back into her life, as he is also interested in who was involved in the murders of multiple people.  Mad suspects a few houses are behind the murders, and will join hands with Nevada once again to stop conflict between houses, which could cause massive destruction.

Nevada has the ability to read people and tell if they lie or tell the truth.  She also has learned other amazing abilities, such as forcing someone to answer her questions truthgully; along the way we do learn more about her growing magical powers.  Mad is ultra powerful, and feared by everyone, except Nevada, who really does love him.  I totally adore them together. They are strong, smart, wild, crazy, magically enhanced and together they mindboggling powerful.

The story line with the Prime houses, the magic, the plots to destroy are a bit complicated, but nevertheless you remained engrossed and unable to let the story go.  The secondary characters, especially Nevada’s family (her sisters, mother, grandmother, cousin, etc), Cornelius (his ability to use animals to help), and Augustine are simply amazing.  Even the villains are powerful and bad.  I do not want to give out spoilers, other than to say how great this series is, and how wonderfully it was written by the Andrews duo.  White Hot had a bit of everything; suspense, danger, tension, non-stop action, wild battles, magic, thrilling and scary moments, as well some humor along the way.  Most of all, the two lead characters, Nevada and Mad, are two of the best I have read; their chemistry was totally white hot when they were together.  Sizzling….

I loved every moment of this book, and can’t wait for the next.  However, that being said, it does grieve me that this series ends with the next book.  Darn, I want to revisit and savor Nevada and Mad in more books. If you love Urban Fantasy, then you should be reading this series. It is not a standalone, so you need to start with the first book, Burn for Me, then you can savior White Hot.  If you have not read Ilona Andrews, you need to start now.  They are simply great.

excerpt

“My wife is dead.” His voice shook with barely controlled emotion. His eyes glistened. “She’s my light. She found me in the darkest time of my life and she saw something in me . . . She believed I could be a better man. I didn’t deserve her or the happiness we had. She loved me, Nevada. She loved me so much, in spite of my faults, and I was the luckiest man alive because when I opened my eyes in the morning, I saw her next to me. She had integrity. She was kind and intelligent, and she tried her hardest to do the right thing so this world would be a better place for our child to grow up in. She didn’t deserve this. She deserved to be happy. She deserved a full and long life. Nobody had the right to rob her of it.”
His face contorted with raw pain and grief. I was trying so hard not to cry. “I love her determination. I love her spirit. I’m proud to have been her husband. And now she’s dead. Someone took this wonderful—this truly beautiful—human being and turned her into a corpse. I saw her on the morgue table. She’s just . . . cold and lifeless as if she never was. Everything is gone except for our daughter and my memories. I have to strive to be the man she thought I was. When my daughter grows up, she’ll ask me why her mother was murdered and I’ll have to answer her. I have to account for my actions. I want to tell her that I found those responsible and I made sure they wouldn’t hurt anyone else.”

He brushed moisture from his eyes with a furious swipe of his hand. “Nobody else will do this. Her family doesn’t have the means, my family doesn’t care, and her employer might have murdered her. There is only me. Will you help me? Please.”

He fell silent. He was sitting here asking for my help and I couldn’t throw him out of my office. I just couldn’t. I remembered when Mom sold our house to pay for Dad’s bills. I remembered when we mortgaged the business and kept it from him, because it would’ve killed him faster than any disease. If someone I loved was murdered, I would do the same thing Cornelius did. He had nowhere to turn. If I slammed the door in his face now, I wouldn’t be able to look my reflection in the eye.

I reached into the top drawer of my desk and took out the blue new-client folder. I opened it so it faced him, placed it on the table, and wrote $50,000 in the margins on the front. “This is my retainer. This stays with the agency no matter what happens. It’s nonnegotiable.”

I used my pen to circle the bottom number on the right side. “These are our rates. This job is likely to be high-risk, so the top rate right here will apply. As you can see, it’s a daily and not hourly rate. Depending on the situation, I may have to charge you hazard pay or additional expenses. The retainer acts like a deductible. Once the amount billed to you exceeds it, you will make additional payments in installments of $10,000. After we’re done here, you may want to go to the bank and withdraw at least $20,000 in cash. We may have to bribe people . . .”

“Thank you.”

“This is a bad idea. Please reconsider.”

He shook his head. “No.”

I walked him through the privacy policy and had him sign all of the waivers. “What happens once we find whoever is responsible?”

“I’ll take care of things from there.”

“Meaning you’ll kill your wife’s murderer.”

“It’s the way Houses handle things,” Cornelius said.

“Well, I’m not a House. I’m a person with a family, and I respect and try to obey the laws of this country. I won’t hesitate to defend you or myself, but I won’t condone murder.”

“Understood,” Cornelius said. “How do we start?”

“I need to be able to speak to Matthias Forsberg. I need face-to-face time so I can ask him some questions. I can make the necessary calls tomorrow, but he’ll refuse to see me.”

“You don’t have the social status and you work for his competitor.” Cornelius nodded. “Matthias is an active participant in the Assembly. He never misses a session. Tomorrow happens to be December 15th. The session starts at 9:00 a.m.”

“I don’t have admission to the Assembly.” The Assembly was an unofficial executive body that governed the magic users at state and national levels. The Texas State Assembly met in Houston. A family had to have at least two Prime-caliber magic users in three generations to be considered a House and each House had a single seat. Technically the Assembly had no power within the US government, but, practically, when the Houses spoke in one collective voice, both Congress and the White House listened.

“A family name has to be good for something, right?”

Cornelius smiled. It never reached his eyes. They stayed bitter and haunted. “As a Significant and a scion of a House, I’m free to attend the Assembly and bring a companion of my choice. I intend to be an active participant in this investigation, Ms. Baylor.”

“Call me Nevada,” I told him. “Good. Then we’ll meet here tomorrow at seven.”

About the author

“Ilona Andrews” is the pseudonym for a husband-and-wife writing team. Ilona is a native-born Russian and Gordon is a former communications sergeant in the U.S. Army. Contrary to popular belief, Gordon was never an intelligence officer with a license to kill, and Ilona was never the mysterious Russian spy who seduced him. They met in college, in English Composition 101, where Ilona got a better grade. (Gordon is still sore about that.) They have co-authored two New York Times and USA Today bestselling series—the urban fantasy of Kate Daniels and the romantic urban fantasy of The Edge—and are working on the next volumes for both. They live in Texas with their two children and many dogs and cats.

Description:
RESCUE ME
After his train is robbed at gunpoint, Remington Frost awakens from a blow to find the bandits gone…along with the woman he was shadowing for protection. No stranger to risk, Remington will do what it takes to bring Phoebe Apple to safety and her kidnappers to justice. But ransoming Phoebe is just the start of trouble…

Phoebe is shocked to learn that her mysterious rescuer is none other than Remington Frost, the son of her sister’s new husband. Home at Twin Star Ranch, she falls happily into western life–and cautiously in love with Remington. But danger hides close to home, and their romance illuminates a web of secrets and betrayal that may put the rancher and his intended bride past the point of rescue.

Review:

A Touch of Frost by Jo Goodman is a western historical romance.  This is one of the rare occasions that I read a western, especially being historical.  I did enjoy this story, and the fact that the main characters were very likeable.

Phoebe Apple, our heroine, is on a train from New York heading to visit her sister in Frost Falls, Colorado. The train is robbed, and Phoebe, while trying to help an unconscious young man she had been eying, finds herself kidnapped.

Remington Frost, our hero, is the unconscious man, having fallen while trying to fight off the kidnappers.  Remington is Phoebe sister, Fiona’s brother in law, and was sent by Thaddeus, his father to make sure Phoebe arrives safely to their ranch in Frost Falls.  It will be Remington, who will leave the train, and rescue Phoebe.

What follows is a sweet slow build romance between Remington, who does not like Fiona and Phoebe, who has her own issues with Fiona.  Fiona’s attitude towards Remington and Phoebe, as well as her own marriage plays a big part of this story.  But Remington and Phoebe were so great together, as the romance was fun, humorous and their chemistry was sensual.  The major plot surrounding their romance, and Fiona and Thaddeus marriage was the mystery behind Phoebe’s kidnapping.  There is excitement and danger, when someone close to the Frosts comes back to haunt them, as lives are on the line in the action-filled last third of the book.

I loved Phoebe, who a strong independent young lady, and a fun heroine.  I also adored the handsome Remington, who seemed like the perfect hunky cowboy we would all want to meet.  I personally did not like Fiona, who seemed to think only herself, and came across as an unlikeable b**ch.  Closer to the end, we see both Fiona and Phoebe comes to terms, and Fiona does get a bit better.

Jo Goodman did an excellent job in creating a wonderful couple in Remington and Phoebe, and a story which had a lot of humorous banter, and an enjoyable romance.  If you enjoy romance, a western and historical background, with a fun sexy couple, then you should read A Touch of Frost.

REVIEW: WICKED FAVOR is the first installment in Sawyer Bennett’s contemporary, adult WICKED HORSE VEGAS erotic, romance series focusing on the elite sex club known as the Wicked Horse. Wicked Horse Vegas is a spin off from the author’s The Wicked Horse series. This is club owner and former Marine Jerico Jameson, and Trista Barnes’s story line. You do not have to have read the original series to understand and follow the spin off.

NOTE: WICKED FAVOR contains sexually graphic scenes of M/M, M/F/M situations including anal, oral, and group play that may not be suitable for all readers

Told from dual first person points of view (Jerico and Trista) WICKED FAVOR focuses on Trista’s search for help. With a loan shark threatening her life, Trista calls in a favor from Jerico Jameson-a favor owed to Trista’s brother Jayce Barnes-but a favor that comes at a cost. Enter Jerico Jameson-owner of the elite Vegas sex club The Wicked Horse and The Jameson Group International Security Services-the man with whom Trista will fall in love. What ensues is the building relationship between Trista and Jerico, but a relationship predicated on betrayal, revenge and fraud.

Trista Barnes is struggling to pay off the loan-a loan that has doubled within weeks of receipt. Her only recourse is Jerico Jameson-a former Marine buddy of her brother’s but a man with an agenda as it pertains to our leading heroine. To pay back the loan Trista must work at The Wicked Horse-doing whatever job Jerico asks. Jerico Jameson is determined to enact revenge for sins of the past-Trista Barnes is his path of vengeance but a path that meanders into dangerous territory.

The relationship between Trista and Jerico begins as a business arrangement but soon begins to turn into something more. Jerico makes no promises for the future-a thirty day work detail to pay back the loan-but thirty days where our couple will fall in love before Trista uncovers the truth behind Jerico’s plans for revenge. The $ex scenes are intimate, erotic, and provocative including ménage play, voyeurism, exhibitionism, group play and more.

We are introduced to Trista’s brother Jayce Barnes; her niece Corrine, as well as her mother Jolene; Jerico’s confidant and business partner Kynan McGrath, and an assortment of employees and guests of The Wicked Horse-Las Vegas.

The world building focuses on betrayal and revenge; the building relationship between Jerico and Trista; and the fall out as the truth is finally revealed. The reader becomes a voyeur into the back rooms and playrooms of The Wicked Horse, as the members, guests and owners partake of the offered fantasies.

WICKED FAVOR is a sexy, spicy and erotic romance that follows two people pulled together by sins of the past. The premise is energetic; the romance is carnal and wicked; the characters are colorful, spirited and dynamic. WICKED FAVOR is a story of passion, revenge, betrayal and hope.

Young couple kissing in bed with inverted position

Excerpt

Jerico

For three nights, I’ve watched her.
By any definition, I’d totally be considered a stalker.
But from the comfort of my office, I can pull up the security feeds on my monitor and take note of the subtle changes in Trista as she works the condiment tray. Truth be told, I don’t need her working that job and have a much greater need for her to go back to cleaning, but fuck if she doesn’t look a hell of a lot sexier in a thong than a turtleneck and pants.
Part of my training in the military was gathering intelligence, so I can pick up on the slightest of details that could tell me a very important story, and there were a lot of changes I noticed over the last three days with Trista as she settled into her job routine.
The most important and pleasing thing was that Trista’s stopped hiding her sexual curiosity. When she first started working here, she looked around a room in a vague way, not taking in too many details. I think she was afraid to watch.
Afraid of what it would do to her body.
But that has definitely changed.
Now, Trista watches what the patrons are doing. Sometimes, she stares for long moments and much to my delight, the kinkier the acts, the longer she stares. My trained eyes take in her chest rising and falling to keep up with what I’m sure was a racing pulse. She’d adjust the straps covering her breasts in a very minute way either because the pressure on her nipples was too much, or because she wanted to create some friction.
Naughty, naughty girl.
My favorite though was when she would cross one long leg over the other and squeeze her thighs together as she watched, and I had no doubt her clit was probably pulsing with desire.
Trista was getting braver too. She never once took any man up on an offer to join, and there had been some I’d seen. I had told her she could if business was slow, but I also made a spectacle in front of Willis that she was off limits. Perhaps Trista thinks she’s off limits to everyone, and it’s fine by me if she wants to think that.

••••••••••

REVIEW: A SKY FULL OF STARS is the fifth installment in Samantha Chase’s contemporary, adult THE SHAUGHNESSY BROTHERS romance series focusing on the Shaughnessy siblings of North Carolina. This is astrophysicist Dr. Owen Shaughnessy, and artist Brooke Matthews’ story line. A SKY FULL OF STARS can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary. Owen is rock star Riley Shaughnessy’s twin brother.

SOME BACKGROUND: Approximately twenty years earlier the Shaughnessy’s lost their mother to a drunk driver that left six siblings (including a one year old infant daughter) without a mother. Fast forward to present day where the now adult children continue to struggle with the loss. Owen’s connection to his mother is their love of the stars, and the memories that remind him of everything they lost

Told from dual third person perspectives (Owen and Brooke) A SKY FULL OF STARS follows the building relationship between astrophysicist Dr. Owen Shaughnessy, and flamboyant artist Brooke Matthews. With the department’s upcoming trip to Red Rock, Nevada Owen’s mentor Dr. Howard Shields asks a favor on behalf of his twenty eight year old niece Brooke Matthews. Brooke is an artist and her specialty is the night sky. A meteor shower would be the perfect muse for our heroine’s talent but Owen’s nerd-like, painfully shy, and emotionally withdrawn personality is not a match for the out-going Brooke Matthews. What ensues is the building relationship between our leading couple, and the fall out when Owen’s issues of trust come to the forefront.

Brooke Matthews is an outgoing, exuberant young woman whose past is shrouded secrets and pain. Raised on the pageant circuit, our heroine walked away from her life to focus on what she loved and what she lost. Owen is the socially awkward, quiet but brilliant genius who prefers to work alone without the distraction of human interaction but his relationship with Brooke Matthews brings out a distinctly different side to our leading hero-a side that is willing to step up and take a stand. The $ex scenes are mostly implied and fade to black.

All of the Shaughnessy siblings and their significant others play secondary and supporting roles. With the arrival of the next generation there are some awkward moments for the family patriarch Ian Shaughnessy, and his lady love.

The world building continues to follow the Shaughnessy sibling dynamics: Owen’s struggle to accept his position within the family; and sister Darcy’s need to get out from under the protective bubble of five older brothers.

A SKY FULL OF STARS is a sweet, clean romantic story line that sees another Shaughnessy brother find his happily ever after. The premise is emotional and realistic-I truly felt for Owen’s predicament. The characters are passionate; the romance is intimate. A SKY FULL OF STARS is an encouraging and delightful look at family and love.

excerpt

“That was…interesting.”
“I never thought I’d see those two mediums used together.”
“I may have to stab my own eyes out to make sure I never see it again,” Brooke said and then shuddered. They had just left the art gallery, and she waited until they were at the corner before looking at Owen. “I am so sorry.”
He looked taken aback by her apology. “Why?”
“That was horrible! Everything in there was offensive and tasteless and just…wrong! I can’t believe an art professor would recommend that to anyone!”
“Maybe he didn’t know exactly what kind of art was being displayed.”
Brooke shook her head. “He had to know. He raved about the whole thing—like he was familiar with the kind of work this guy did!”
“Maybe he’s into that kind of thing. There were a lot of people there who were praising pretty much everything they saw.”
Even though she knew Owen was right, she was still horrified. All of the pictures featured nudes in cages—and then there was wire caging coming out of the picture to give it a 3-D effect. Splashes of color looked as if they were just thrown onto the canvas, and all in all the exhibit had been fairly horrific to her. Brooke didn’t consider herself a prude, but these images were definitely not something she would have chosen to see.
Ever.
And now she was mortified because she had invited Owen along. To his credit, he didn’t seem the least bit fazed by the whole thing. It was possible he was trying to be polite and didn’t want to offend her in case she found the work interesting. But after the first five minutes of being there, Brooke had wanted to escape. Somehow, however, Owen had drawn her into conversation as they walked around the gallery and made several observations that had her wondering if he really didn’t see what was so…bizarre about the entire thing.
And that had been eye-opening for her. They stayed much longer than she’d imagined they would—especially after seeing the art—but they had talked the entire time, and after a while, she didn’t even notice their surroundings. She simply enjoyed the conversation, which turned to the architecture of the building rather than the show.
“So that was an art showing,” Owen said conversationally.
She nodded. “I really wish it had been a better experience.”
“Is this the sort of thing you want to do? Have your paintings displayed in one particular gallery?”
“I think so. That was one of the reasons I went to talk to Dr. Kennedy. I really wanted his input on ways to get my name out there to some of the local galleries. I was hoping he’d give me some insight into how to get started.”
Without commenting, Owen simply nodded.
“I don’t know about you,” she began, “but the thought of walking back to the pier is just a little exhausting. Would you mind if we grabbed a cab?”
“Not at all.” Walking to the curb, he quickly hailed one, and once they were inside, he instructed the driver where to take them.
“Thank you,” Brooke said, resting her head back on the seat. “I know I could have made the walk, but I’m just worn out.”
“It was a lot of walking,” he agreed. “I’ll have the driver drop you at your car and take me back to my hotel.”
“Oh.”
Turning his head toward her, he looked at her until she met his gaze. “What’s wrong?”
She shrugged. It was silly to be disappointed. Looking at the clock on the dashboard, she knew it was late—almost midnight—but she wasn’t ready for the night to end.
“I just thought I’d drive you back there, and maybe we could have a drink or something before we called it a night.”
He studied her for a moment, and she was afraid she had been too forward and he was going to turn her down.
“I’d like that,” he said, surprising her yet again.
“Good,” she said, smiling.
The ride to her car took only a few minutes, and Owen paid the driver and thanked him as they climbed out. Silently they walked to her car, and for the first time that night, she truly felt nervous. There wasn’t anything she could put her finger on, but for some reason Brooke knew it was a big deal that they were out together tonight and they were both unwilling to let the night come to an end.
Or perhaps she was seeing only what she wanted to see.
They stopped next to her car, and she turned to him. “I don’t think I know what hotel you’re staying at.”
“It would probably be easier for me to drive. That is…if you don’t mind.”
Brooke willingly handed him the keys, and they were on the move minutes later. Traffic was a little bit lighter than it had been earlier in the evening but still heavier than she would have expected for this time of night. Everything was lit up, and the sidewalks were still crowded, and she loved the energy of it all. They turned off the main road, and Owen pulled into an underground garage and parked.
“I was so busy people-watching I didn’t even notice where we are.” There was a possibility that was the wrong thing to admit to, but…
“That’s okay,” he said, taking the keys out and handing them to her. Neither made a move to get out of the car though.
She watched him for a moment—noticed how he was staring at the steering wheel and how he seemed to be thinking about something but she had no idea what. Turning in her seat, she faced him. “Owen—”
“I’d like to kiss you,” he blurted out.
Her eyes went wide, and her heart beat madly in her chest. “You…you would?”
Owen looked at her, his dark eyes so full of emotion. He shook his head. “I’m sure there was a more eloquent way to say that, but…I’m not very eloquent,” he added quietly.
Reaching out, Brooke took one of his hands in hers—relishing the warmth she found there—and marveled at how large it was. And there was strength there. He didn’t have the hands of a man who sat behind a desk pushing papers around, and the skin-on-skin contact was far more arousing than she thought possible. “You’re more eloquent than you think you are,” she said softly.
The look he gave her said he didn’t quite believe her. “I had a wonderful time with you tonight, Brooke, and I know we’re going to go inside and have a drink, and we’ll talk some more and…well…the longer we talk and the later it gets, it’s going to make me want to kiss you even more. It’s wrong for me to want to, but—”
“Why is it wrong?” she interrupted.
And there were those eyes that had her more than ready to crawl across the seat and into his lap. There was a vulnerability in his eyes that was almost her undoing.
“I hurt you. I know you didn’t say anything about it, but I know Howard probably talked to you and told you about Red Rock.” He looked away and shook his head. “It was wrong of me to do it like that. I should have talked to you myself. I’m sorry.”
“Owen, I’m not going to lie to you. I was hurt, and yes, I was pretty angry with you earlier. I know we haven’t known each other very long, but I thought we were at least becoming friends. I hated hearing about your decision from my uncle, but…I kind of understand why you did it that way. I’m sure it wasn’t an easy decision for you to make.”
“None of this is easy,” he murmured and then looked up at her again. “I’m not good at this sort of thing—playing it cool and pretending I’m not interested in you when in fact I am. So…I’d completely understand if you didn’t want to stay and have that drink or talk like we’d planned. You’re probably sitting there trying to figure out a nice way to tell me to get out of the car.”
Brooke was about to correct him, but Owen kept talking.
“I thought about hiring you, but I couldn’t. Not because I don’t want you on the trip, but because I knew I couldn’t handle working with you every day and having you close by while I’m attracted to you. And knowing you were only there because you wanted to paint and that you weren’t interested in me.”
Now she had to speak. Before he could get another word out, she squeezed his hand and got his attention. “But you’re wrong.”
He didn’t seem to understand what she was talking about.
“I do want to go on this trip to paint—I’m not going to deny that—but…Owen, I’m attracted to you too. I’ve enjoyed getting to know you, and the more time we spend together, the more I want to spend with you. I was afraid maybe you didn’t want me on the trip because I wasn’t smart enough or—”
She never got to finish.
Owen closed the distance between them and cupped her face in his hands as his lips claimed hers.

If we fall…

Ryder
I’ve protected Serena from everything I could in her father’s world, but with each horrible act he committed, I knew the time would come when protecting her wouldn’t be enough. When that day comes and it’s either Robert or me who survives, I will do what I have to so the woman I love and my child are safe.

May heaven help me.

Serena
Every day I grow stronger as the child Ryder and I created grows inside me. I’m no fool, though. I know my father will do everything in his power to keep his control over us. But I’m not that scared little girl I used to be anymore, and the time is coming when he will realize that.

We’re fighting for even more than love now. This time, we’re fighting for family.

•••••••••••••

REVIEW: IF WE FALL is the third and final installment in KM Scott’s CORRUPTED LOVE erotic, romance trilogy focusing on former underground MMA fighter Ryder Rhodes, and sheltered heiress Serena Erickson. IF WE FALL should not be read as a stand alone as it picks up immediately upon the events of book two-IF YOU FIGHT.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Ryder and Serena) IF WE FALL follows the ongoing turmoil and building relationship between former MMA fighter Ryder Rhodes, and Serena Erickson. Ryder and Serena’s future has been sealed but Serena’s father is determined to destroy that which he cannot control. As the new head of security Ryder begins to move up the ranks but Serena’s safety and that of his child are paramount, and Ryder is ready to take down the man that destroyed all of their lives.

IF WE FALL is a story of romance, suspense, family and intrigue. Robert Erickson’s control of his family is dangerous and dark; his power is corrupted; the evil permeates everything he touches. IF WE FALL and the Corrupted Love series follows one family as they struggle with what was, what is, and what could have been. Secrets are revealed; lives will be lost; and in the end, justice is served-one way or another. The writing style is simple and uncomplicated; the premise is intriguing; the characters are tragic and dynamic; the romance is fated, passionate and erotic. IF WE FALL is an imaginative and inventive story line where love (and vengeance) does truly –conquer all!

If We Fall Teaser

excerpt

I knocked softly on the door frame, and he looked over at me wearing one of those crocodile grins that still terrified me because I knew what they meant. Someone was going to be in a world of hurt soon, if his past behavior was any indication. Probably me.

“Ryder, please come in. No need to knock. This is your home. You’re always welcome here.”

Said the spider to the fly.

His smile and the tone of his words didn’t match one another—a sure sign of a psychopath—but I braced myself for whatever might come next and stepped into his office. Two men around my size stood at their posts in front of the bookcase and another stood at the back of the room near the windows. None of them appeared to even care that I’d come in, so I relaxed a little and turned my focus to Robert sitting behind his desk.

“Your overeager new guy tells me you want to see me,” I said with probably too much cockiness for my own good.

Behind me, I heard the man come into the room and stop at the door to take his position where I used to. I turned to throw him a glance to let him know I still didn’t appreciate the way he’d talked to me outside and then looked back at Robert.

“So are we going to do this or not? I figure this time you might not stop at just a beating, but it seems shitty to take a newborn baby’s father from him not two days into his life.”

No matter how much bravado I stuffed into each word, inside I worried that Robert planned to do just that—take me from Serena and Cayden, and not just by sending me somewhere far away. That crocodile smile he wore even now made me think these might be the last breaths I’d ever take.

But if I was going out of this world, I planned to fight like hell before it happened. I had too much to lose now.

He stood from behind his desk, and I reached for my gun, knowing the four men surrounding me did the same. I didn’t care that the odds were against me. If I could get off one good shot, at least Serena and Cayden wouldn’t have to live under Robert’s rule another day of their lives. My life for that was a trade I could accept.

Robert raised his hands as that smile slid from his face. “There is no need for guns, gentleman. Ryder, you’re among family here.”

I’d seen what his version of family meant. That’s why I carried a gun.

He offered me a seat in front of him in one of those red leather chairs. “Please, sit down. This is a happy day for both of us.”

Looking around, I saw the four men had returned to their jobs and weren’t paying attention to us anymore. “A happy day? Are we talking about my son’s birth or something else?”

“Sit, Ryder. Please.”

I slowly lowered myself into the chair closer to the door and tried to look relaxed, but Robert’s strangely happy mood confused me. I’d disobeyed him and betrayed him. There was no reason to believe he wouldn’t exact his retribution for that.

The only question was when.

Review:

Wolf Hunt by Paige Tyler is the 6th book in her wonderful SWAT series.   I love this series by Tyler, as she always manages to give us an exciting, fun, action packed, sexy  story, with a great couple.  Of course, it is always nice to learn more about our Hot hunks that are members of the Dallas SWAT team.  It doesn’t hurt that they are all sexy alpha werewolves.

The story starts with Remy Boudreaux, our hero, on a mission that kills his girlfriend, and leaves him near death.  We pick up a few years later, where Remy is now a member of the Dallas SWAT team, and we learn that he was turned into werewolf to save his life.  Remy and his three fellow members of the Dallas SWAT team attend training in New Orleans, his old home town.  When they go to the bar at night, Remy scents someone from the past that he knew from school.

We meet our heroine, Triana Bellamy, who had a crush on Remy in high school.  The attraction between them is immediate and strong; before long Remy begins to feel a bond develop. His friend’s tease him, asking if she is “the one”, as legend says a werewolf will find his “one” mate, and it seems lately that the Swat members are slowly finding their “one”.  Remy does not want to hear this, as he does not want to be hurt again or put anyone close to him in danger. But fate is making it difficult to ignore his intense feelings.

Triana works in California as a scientist in a CSI lab, which helps discover clues such as DNA, etc.  Triana is home to visit her mother, who runs a voodoo shop, and also wants to find out more information as to who murdered her father.   When she sees someone badgering her mother to sell them a missing wolf pendant, or the store, her suspicions rise.   While Remy and the guys are working with the New Orleans police, they help on a real assignment to catch a drug lord.  As the tension escalates, this will eventually coincide with Triana’s quest to find her father’s murderer.   What follows is an exciting, tense, pulse pounding adventure putting Triana and her mother in danger; as well as pulling Remy and his friends to help.

What I love about this series is not only the suspense and action packed story; but Paige Tyler always gives us a wonderful sexy couple.  Remy and Triana had sizzling chemistry, and were great together.  She knew Remy was the man for her, and he was doing all he could to step away, so not to see her get hurt.  But when push comes to shove, Remy finds out that not being together will not protect Triana.  Her research into her father’s murder will put her in deeper danger, and he will be forced to find a way to save her, as she was in terrible danger.  Triana will also learn the truth about Remy and his SWAT members.   Will she try to stay with Remy knowing what his really is?

I love this series. It is always fun, exciting, sexy, with a fantastic group of characters that make up the SWAT team, and their eventual mates.  Paige Tyler does it so well, putting the story in the forefront and at the same time giving us a beautiful romance.  If you have not read this series, you are missing a gem.

excerpt

Triana was having so much fun, she was disappointed when they finally reached her mother’s voodoo shop and the apartment over it. Even though it was after two in the morning, she didn’t want the evening to end yet.
“The shop hasn’t changed much, but do you want to come in and look around anyway?” she asked hopefully.
He grinned. “Yeah. I’d like that.”
Triana unlocked the door, then closed and locked it behind them quietly, so she wouldn’t wake her mom. When she turned back around, Remy was already walking around the dimly lit shop, taking in the shelves upon shelves of knickknacks that had mesmerized her since childhood. The overhead lights were off, so the red, green, and purple neon tubes that edged the display windows were the only source of illumination, but it was more than enough to guide her steps as she moved to Remy’s side. She watched as he picked up the various dolls, candles, beads, tarot cards, potions, books, and other trinkets that filled the store. For such large hands, he handled everything he touched with a surprisingly gentle touch.
“Everything is exactly the same as I remember it.” He turned to smile at her, a warm glint in his eyes. “Well, not everything. You’ve changed quite a bit.”
The heated way he looked at her made her tummy quiver. “Really. How so?”
Remy took her hand and tugged her closer. The tips of her nipples grazed his muscular chest, sending tingles spiraling through her. “I tend to remember you as a shy, somewhat awkward girl who was all knees and elbows back then.”
She laughed softly, a little embarrassed. Yeah, that was a pretty good description of her when she was in high school. She had been what her mom called a late bloomer, so everything had changed her freshman year in college, when her body had made up for lost time.
“And now?” she asked in a near whisper.
He bent his head until his face was so close to hers that she could feel the warmth of his breath on her skin. His left hand came up and found her hip, slowly gliding back and forth across the silky material and heating the skin underneath.
“And now, you definitely aren’t shy, you move like a cat, and all those knees and elbows have turned into some serious curves I’d love to explore, since I’m smart enough to know what I want.”
She blushed at hearing him put all that into words. “No one’s stopping you.”
The glint in his eyes flared brighter for a moment as the neon lights caught them. Then, one of Remy’s hands was in her hair and he was kissing her. A moan involuntarily escaped her lips as his mouth came down on hers and his tongue slipped inside. He tasted so delicious she couldn’t help it.
She slid her hands up the front of his shirt and grabbed his shoulders, squeezing hard as she pulled him even closer, urging him to kiss her harder.
Remy must have understood what she was trying to say because the hand in her hair tightened possessively and his tongue teased hers more aggressively. At the same time, his free hand moved around from her hip to her lower back, fitting her against him so firmly she could feel every ripple and bulge in that perfect body of his. And one of those bulges suggested he was enjoying the kiss just as much as she was.
Triana melted against him, surrendering to a kiss she’d been fantasizing of for over a decade. She’d heard women talking about going all weak kneed from a great kiss, but she’d never experienced it or even believed it. She believed it now. If Remy hadn’t been holding on to her so tightly, she was sure she would have just collapsed to her knees right there in front of him.
Isn’t that an interesting thought?
