ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date July 18, 2017

When you can’t trust yourself, how can you ask anyone else to?

It’s been months since Aden Colt left the Army, and still the memories haunt him. When he moved into a boat off the California coast, he thought he’d found the perfect place to escape life.

Then Sawyer shows up, and turns his simple life upside down.

Beautiful and sophisticated, she seems out of place in this laid back beach town. Something is pushing her to experience everything she can—including Aden. But as much as he wants her, starting a relationship with Sawyer puts them both at risk.

For Aden, the past doesn’t stay there; it shows up unexpectedly, uncontrollably, and doesn’t care whose life it wrecks.

••••••••••

REVIEW: WRECKED by J.B. Salsbury is a stand alone, contemporary adult, romance story line focusing on twenty four year old Sawyer Forrester , and former US soldier /fisherman Aden Colt.

Told from dual first person points of view (Sawyer and Aden) WRECKED focuses on the building relationship between Sawyer Forrester and Aden Colt. Sawyer’s twin sister Celia is dying-a brain tumor is destroying her life-and she asks one thing of her sister before she dies. Sawyer must return to Celia’s home in San Diego to box up her life but in doing so must pretend to be Celia so as not to worry her neighbors and friends. Enter Aden Colt, the property’s new landlord, and the man with whom Sawyer will fall in love. What ensues is the building love between Sawyer and Aden, and Sawyer’s struggle to keep secret her sister’s dying wish in the face of too many secrets and lies.

WRECKED is a story of secrets, lies, heartbreak and betrayal. Pretending to be her sister Celia, Sawyer finds herself struggling with the truth, and falling in love with a man who believes she is someone else, goes against everything Sawyer believes and observes. Sawyer is the quiet, uptight twin; the one who is afraid to try something new, and lying about her true identity is a struggle for our story line heroine. Aden Colt is a broken man; a soldier who lost everything on his last deployment overseas, and in the ensuing months battles the demons that continue to destroy his mind. Meeting Sawyer (aka Celia) finds our hero accepting what was and what will never be but his PTSD, inability to trust, and growing anxiety threaten his relationship with the woman with whom he is falling in love- a relationship with an end date as Sawyer prepares to pack up and move back home. The $ex scenes are intimate and seductive without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

We are introduced to Sawyer’s twin sister Celia, their parents Tom and Darlene Forrester, Colt’s uncle Calvin Hurtado, and neighbor/ Vietnam war veteran Jenkins, as well as an assortment of friends and acquaintances of Celia Forrester.

WRECKED is an emotional and heartbreaking story line about one woman’s struggle to step out of her comfort zone as she embarks on her sister’s journey one last time, and one’s man battle with the ghosts from the past. The premise is energetic and moving; the characters are colorful, tragic and animated; the romance is fated and passionate. WRECKED is an intense and tearful story from the pen of author JB Salsbury.

excerpt

NOTE: Excerpt intended for mature readers due to content and language

Oh no, fuck no!
I thought he was kidding. I should’ve known better. Aden’s intentions with me since I stupidly boarded this boat have been my torment for his enjoyment. He loved watching me squirm over the bait tank and when I proved I wouldn’t shy away from a challenge, he pulled out the big guns. From his flirty smiles to his teasing touches, he’s discovered my weaknesses and is exploiting them for his own entertainment.
Now this? Raw fish probably still warm from fighting for its life.
And now I’m God knows how many feet above water sitting on a two-seater bench held up by rusty ladders and staring down a piece of glistening pink meat.
“You have to eat it, it’s a rite of passage.” He offers the meat to my lips and I quickly turn my face away.
“I’m really not hungry.” As if the idea isn’t enough to turn my stomach, watching him clean the fish before sectioning off enough for lunch wasn’t much of an appetite builder.
“Of course you are.” He brings the piece to his own mouth and takes a bite, closing his eyes with a moan as he chews.
I feel a rush of bile hit my throat, or maybe it’s beer, either way it’s warm and it burns. “That’s disgusting.”
“You’re telling me you don’t like sushi?”
My eyes widen. Sawyer would say she’s never had sushi. But Celia’s a different story. She ate a live cricket in the eighth grade on a dare. She didn’t even flinch. “I like sushi, just not directly from the…um…source.”
“Doesn’t get fresher than this.” He takes another bite and I can’t deny that his response to eating it does give it some appeal.
“I think I need soy sauce or that green stuff.” What’s it called?
“Just try it.”
“I really don’t want to.”
“Oh come on.” He smiles in that cute crooked way that makes my heart dip and dive. “Live a little.”
I chew the inside of my mouth debating the cost/benefit of taking a bite of this fresh-out-of-the-ocean fish. On one hand, I’ll impress Aden. That in and of itself is worth the ick factor. But what if I throw up all over his boat? Is the chance of impressing him worth totally humiliating myself? I groan when I realize what I’m doing, exactly what I swore I wouldn’t do. I’m making an internal pros and cons list. I close my eyes and steel my resolve and my spine. Don’t think, just decide. I pop open my eyes followed by my mouth.
“Yeah?” He stares at my parted lips.
I nod, hoping he’ll hurry before I change my mind.
Lifting the rose-colored flesh forward, he places it between my teeth. It’s a small bite so I close my lips around his fingers expecting him to pull away…but he doesn’t. For a moment I’m suspended in his gaze, totally stuck while his hot fingers rest between my lips. This should be grossing me out; after all, I watched him gut this fish with his bare hands and to wash off all the blood he merely dipped them into the ocean. But all the thoughts of raw fish and a stranger’s finger do nothing to stave off the warmth blooming in my belly. My tongue pulls the meat deeper into my mouth, brushing against the rough pad of his forefinger. He bites his lip but finally drops his hand.
He watches intently while I chew and swallow.
“How was it?” His voice is low and gruff.
Lost in the heated moment, I barely tasted it. “Good.”
His hand cups the back of my head and he pulls me toward him, stopping just short of our lips touching. “I can’t fucking take this anymore.” His breath is sawing in and out, bursting against my mouth with impatience. “Let me.” It’s a demand, not a question.
A kiss. I don’t need to channel Celia or flip a coin…I know what I want.
I lick my lips and close the slight distance between us.

Elemental Mating by Milly Taiden – a Review

Elemental MatingAmazon / B&N / Kobo / BAM

Description:
Their existence was a secret the government stumbled upon. In exchange for continued autonomy, the paranormals entered an alliance with the government. Now they are A.L.F.A.: Alpha League Federal Agency, sworn to protect and serve humanity.

Brilliant scientist Melinda Caster has discovered a new strain of the Zika virus that stimulates synaptic growth in embryos, causing neuron development beyond normal human levels. Way beyond, like ESP-levels of cognitive abilities. When the lab is broken into, Melinda realizes that someone has been keeping tabs on her research and wants it for themselves. A happy accident destroys critical data before it can fall into the wrong hands, but unfortunately that makes Melinda and her perfect memory a target.

A.L.F.A sends in jaguar-shifter Agent Parish Hamel to discover who is after the virus and why. The beautiful scientist acts like catnip to his senses and throws his mating instincts into overdrive. And then she disappears along with the only sample of the virus…. Now Parish must canvas the darkest areas of the supernatural underground to rescue Melinda, and what he discovers is beyond a paranormal’s worst nightmare.

Review:

Elemental Mating by Milly Taiden is the first book in her new A.L.F.A. series.  I had mixed feelings about this book, which I will go into detail later in this review.

Melinda Caster, our heroine, is a scientist who is working in Uganda.  She has discovered a virus and a possible antidote.  Parish Hamel, our hero, arrives on the scene a short time after Melinda discovers how the effect of this serum acts on mice. It turns out Hamel is a government agent for A.L.F.A (Alpha League Federal Agency), and he is a Jaguar shifter.  Hamel has been assigned to protect Melinda, though she does not know this, and is told he is another scientist interested in her findings.

It seems this virus does not kill, but instead increases their ability beyond that of normal humans.  Someone has been tracking Melinda, and looking for the virus; as both her house and workplace were destroyed.  A few times, Melinda finds herself saved by a lone Jaguar, which shocks her, but she begins to look at the Jaguar as her savior.  Of course, it will be much later when she finds out that Hamel is the Jaguar.  Hamel recognizes early on that Melinda is his mate.

This was a very promising story, with some excitement, demons, and a couple that had a lot of sexual chemistry together.  However, despite this, my mixed feelings brought this down at least a star.  I know this was also meant to add humor into the story, but I felt some of it was a bit amateurish.  When they both ended up in the Demon realm, it was totally off the wall for me,  being more on the silly side.

That being said, Elemental Mating had an interesting and exciting theme, and a sexy couple.  I will try out the next book to see if my mixed feelings change.  If you enjoy a shifter story line, with this type of humor, then you should give Elemental Mating a try.

REVIEW: A TOUCH OF BLOOD: Connor and Sami is the first book and contribution by Carly Fall in the dual-authored, contemporary, adult OPERATION UNDERWORLD paranormal, romance serial focusing on a secret organization whose members have special abilities to ferret out the supernatural powers. OPERATION UNDERWORLD is a spin off from Carly’s Supernatural Renegades series wherein a secret mission to Guatemala and the resulting explosion left the surviving members of a platoon of US Marines with supernatural powers. Former US Marine explosive specialist Connor Dickson survived only to discover he had the ability to see vampires.

Told from third person point of view (Connor Dickson) A TOUCH OF BLOOD reveals some of the background and premise of the organization known as Operation Underworld-a group of people with specialized abilities to detect those who are not quite human. Following the explosion in the Guatemalan jungle Connor Dickson’s recovery in a Las Vegas hospital found our hero with the uncanny ability to detect the mythical vampire. Enter former US Marine Joe Smith (Supernatural Renegades) who offers Connor a chance to join the organization known as Operation Underworld. What ensues is Connor’s first assignment to find out why humans have gone missing from the nightclubs in LA, and his introduction to Sami Karim, a woman also searching for clues into the missing humans but a woman whose lies and betrayal are not easily forgiven by our story line hero.

A TOUCH OF BLOOD: Connor and Sami is an exciting and intriguing introduction into Carly Fall’s contribution to the Operation Underworld multi-authored serial. The premise is edgy and thrilling; the characters are colorful, dynamic and energetic; the romance is fated and seductive. A TOUCH OF BLOOD is an intense and passionate look at two people thrown together by circumstance, death and the supernatural.

ABOUT THE BOOK : Release Date July 17, 2017

The first time I met Caine West was in a bar.
He noticed me looking his way and mistakenly read my scowling as checking him out.
When he attempted to talk to me, I set him straight—telling him what I thought of his lying, cheating, egomaniacal ass.
You see, the gorgeous jerk had wined and dined my best friend–smooth talking her into his bed, all along failing to mention that he was married.
He deserved every bit of my tongue-lashing and more for what he’d done.
Especially when that lazy smile graced his perfect face in response to my rant.
Only it turned out, the man I’d just told off wasn’t the right guy.
Oops. My mistake.
Embarrassed, I slunk out without an apology.
I was never going to see the handsome stranger again anyway, right?
That’s what I thought…until I walked into class the next morning.
Well, hello Professor West, I’m your new teaching assistant.
I’ll be working under you…figuratively speaking.
Although the literal interpretation might not be such a bad thing—working under Professor West.
This was going to be interesting…

REVIEW: BEAUTIFUL MISTAKE by Vi Keeland is a stand alone, contemporary, adult romance story line focusing on music professor Caine West, and his new TA / waitress Rachel Martin.

Told from dual first person points of view (Caine and Rachel) including memories from the past BEAUTIFUL MISTAKE follows the building relationship between music professor Caine West, and his new TA Rachel Martin. A case of mistaken identity found Rachel face to face with the man who would one day break her heart as Caine believes he is not worthy of love or a happily ever after. As Rachel’s new boss, Caine is reluctant to start a romantic relationship with he new TA but the heart wants something more than a professional arrangement but past sins force Caine to keep his distance-a distance that grows smaller with every encounter. What ensues is the growing love between Caine and Rachel, and the potential fall out when Caine pushes away Rachel one too many times.

Throughout BEAUTIFUL MISTAKE we get glimpses into the past-a past shrouded in betrayal and secrets as one man struggles with what was and what could have been. Rachel’s love for Caine is continuously threatened by Caine’s inability to accept the woman who has stolen his heart. The $ex scenes are intimate, erotic and intense without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

We are introduced to Rachel’s ex-boyfriend and former roommate Davis, her older sister Riley, best friend and co-worker at O’Leary’s bar Ava, as well as their boss and Rachel’s adopted father Charlie O’Leary; Caine’s nieces, and Lydia and Umberto-an older couple struggling with Alzheimer’s and forgotten love.

The relationship between Caine and Rachel is one of palpable sexual attraction but a forbidden love as Caine is currently Rachel’s boss and mentor. Rachel struggles with Caine’s back and forth demeanor, and Caine battles his attraction to the woman he is destined to love.

BEAUTIFUL MISTAKE is a story of fated love with a twist that I suspected early on. The premise is heartbreaking and emotional; the characters are colorful, edgy and real; the romance is captivating and challenging. BEAUTIFUL MISTAKE in an intimate and energetic tale that will leave you wanting more.

Seducing Abby Rhodes by J.D. Mason – a Review

Seducing Abby RhodesAmazon / B&N / Kobo / BAM / Book Depository

Description:
When Abigail Rhodes bought that old house she fell in love with in Blink, Texas, she got more than she bargained for. After being told by the local psychic that it is filled with a passionate energy from the previous owners, who died years ago, Abby decides to fix up her beloved house and reluctantly moves in. But ever since then, strange things have been happening in her newly renovated home, and Abby has been plagued with dreams that wake her up and leave her breathless.

After a tumultuous life these last few years, Jordan Gatewood is following what amounts to a trail of breadcrumbs in an effort to find a renewed sense of purpose. Searching for the truth about the man his adoptive-father really was, Jordan makes his way to the old house where his father was murdered, in Blink–and right to the petite, understated beauty that answers the door. It’s not long before Jordan realizes, quite unexpectedly, that Abby is the perfect woman for him. Jordan doesn’t believe in ghosts or fate, but he does know that the powerful connection he feels for this woman started the day he met her in that house and he is determined to make her his.

Robin is a successful Corporate Attorney, and was proud to be the lover of the most sought after bachelor in the state of Texas–until he abruptly breaks off their relationship, leaving her confused, heartbroken and bitter. When she discovers that he’s left her for another woman, a woman she considers beneath her, Robin is determined to teach him a brutal lesson.

A man like Jordan has too many secrets, secrets that, if found out, could not only destroy his relationship with this other woman, but that could also cost him the biggest business deal of his life, and possibly, his freedom. Robin is the last person he wants to go up against, and she will stop at nothing to get him back or to make him pay for his betrayal, even if that means unleashing those secrets. The question is, will Jordan let her? Or will his all-consuming obsession with Abby win out, in Seducing Abby Rhodes by J.D. Mason.

Review:

Seducing Abby Rhodes by J.D. Mason is the 2nd book of a trilogy.  I was not aware that there was a first book, but this read very well as a standalone. Abby Rhodes, our heroine, is a contractor and designer of homes, in her home town of Blink, Texas.   Abby is drawn to a small house that has been rumored to be haunted.  However, Abby decides to purchase the house and renovate it.  What she is not prepared for are the ghosts that belong to the house since a murder almost 30 years ago. Her friend, who is a physic, tells her the ghosts seem happy she is there;  so Abby decides she will move in temporarily while she is renovating.

Jordan Gatewood, our hero,  is a millionaire entrepreneur, who happens to be passing by Blink and decides to visit the old house where his father was killed.  Jordan does not know why now he decides to stop into that house, but he is drawn to it.  He meets Abby, as she is making her plans.  He leaves after a short time to go home, but he cannot forget Abby.   Jordan is also in the middle of major deal that will bring his company millions.  Robin Sinclair is a high powered attorney, who works for Jordan; she is also his mistress.

What follows is fast paced story revolving around the ghosts of Jordan father, and his mistress; the sweet slow built romance between Jordan and Abby; and the vengeance of a woman scorned.

As Jordan cannot stay away, he and Abby begin to fall in love.  In the midst of this, they want to understand why the ghosts remain, and since they cannot talk, it is a mystery that will slowly unravel.  Jordan has only cared about work, and his relationship with Robin and other woman was never serious. Unfortunately, Robin has fallen in love with Jordan and is determined at any cost to break up the growing relationship between him and Abby. It is Jordan’s past concerning the suicide death of his first wife, and his mistress that will possibly prevent him from staying with Abby.

Through all of this, we learn more about Jordan, his family and the murders from years before. We also learn how vicious Robin can be.  Will Jordan give up Abby to prevent Robin from destroying him and his family?  Will we learn what truly happened years before, and why the ghosts have not moved on? Will Abby find a way to keep Jordan?

J.D. Mason has written an interesting unique mystery and a wonderful romance.  Seducing Abby Rhodes held my attention from start to finish.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date July 13, 2017

Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never harm me.
Whoever coined that phrase is a bald-faced liar. Words are often the sharpest weapon of all, triggering some of the most powerful emotions a human can experience.
“You’re pregnant.”
“It’s a boy.”
“Your son needs a heart transplant.”
Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never harm me.
Lies.
Syllables and letters may not be tangible, but they can still destroy your entire life faster than a bullet from a gun.
Two words—that was all it took to extinguish the sun from my sky.
“He’s gone.”
For ten years, the darkness consumed me.
In the end, it was four deep, gravelly words that gave me hope of another sunrise.
“Hi. I’m Porter Reese.”

•••••••••••••

REVIEW: THE DARKEST SUNRISE is the first installment in Aly Martinez’s contemporary adult THE DARKEST SUNRISE duet focusing on restaurateur Porter Reese, and physician Charlotte Mills.

NOTE: Because this is a duet THE DARKEST SUNRISE ends on a cliffhanger-you have been forewarned.

Told from dual first person points of view (Charlotte and Porter) as well as third person Tom Stafford THE DARKEST SUNRISE is a story of grief, betrayal, guilt and moving forward. Ten years earlier Charlotte Mills’ life fell into an abyss of emotional nothingness, and in the ensuing time our heroine has yet to surface from the darkness that dominates her entire existence. Meeting Porter Reese, single father of two young children, whose own life upended several years before, found Charlotte looking forward to a future where the darkness slowly begins to dissipate along with the grief and guilt that has consumed every hour of every day. But Charlotte’s brief glimpse at happiness will be short lived when the past comes full circle and shoves Charlotte back down the rabbit hole of darkness and grief.

Porter and Charlotte are kindred spirits; two people who have experienced the pain of loss, grief, trauma and guilt resulting in two emotionally distant and fragile beings who go through the motions of their day to day existence. Meeting Charlotte Mills Porter felt something he hadn’t felt in years yet their mutual darkness found Porter holding onto what little light their relationship would bring until the day that everything would fall apart with one whispered little word.

THE DARKEST SUNRISE is an emotional story line about two people whose lives will collide as Porter struggles to find hope, and Charlotte battles memories of the past. Words are but verbal emotions, and the face can speak a thousand words with just one look or glance, and it is the spoken word that will find our heroine facing what she so desperately was hoping to find. There is a heart-stopping twist to the story line that I suspected early on but a twist of epic proportions that will once again destroy the lives of two people who were slowly emerging from their darkened h*lls.

Aly Martinez has written a raw, passionate and poignant story line about loss and grief, guilt and responsibility, darkness and the light. The premise is dramatic, memorable and intense; the characters are broken, real and impassioned; the romance is fated, captivating and climactic. THE DARKEST SUNRISE will captivate your imagination with the potential to break your heart and destroy your soul.

Two words—that was all it took to plunge my life into darkness.
“He’s gone.”
In the end, it was four soft, silky words that gave me hope of another sunrise.
“Hi. I’m Charlotte Mills.”

Never one to take herself too seriously, she enjoys cheap wine, mystery leggings, and baked feta. It should be known, however, that she hates pizza and ice cream, almost as much as writing her bio in the third person.

Review:

Her Unexpected Hero by Kyra Jacobs is a fun read for the summer. I read it in one afternoon. It is part of a series, but it can be read as a standalone, without reading the others first.

Maddie loves her job, she’s just not a “people person” she just wants to cook and live her life on her own terms. Maddie might lack self confidence in the outside world, but in her kitchen …. she is in total control and it’s her domain. And when her boss decides that Maddie needs a date to the Inns party, it puts her in a panic, but Maddie has no intention of being “paired up” so she looks for an alternative “date”…. she knows the perfect guy, but she doesn’t know his name and doesn’t have the confidence to go up to the guy and ask him out.

Cole is looking for escape out of small town dreary life. He’s got a dark past and secrets that he just wants to escape from, and he doesn’t think he can in a small town, his past has turned him into a cynical and hard man. All he wants is to build a studio to record music, but doesn’t have enough money.

So with enough money in his pocket he intends to start a new life and a new adventure.
Hired as the new dishwasher for the Inn, Cole is asked to help Maddie prepare for a date, to gain confidence, but what Cole gets is to see the other side of Maddie, and he begins to regret teaching her on how to get her man.

The story flows nicely and the characters are well written, I’ve not read the other two stories previous to this, but I may be tempted to go and have a read.

A Penny for Her Heart by Alretha Thomas – a Review

A Penny for Her Heart by Alretha Thomas – a Review

A Penny for her HeartAmazon

Description:
Vanessa Johnson Rossi’s dream is to work in the White House. Not as the leader of the free world, but as chief of staff, overseeing the executive office of the president. As an assistant working at Buderwood Hills City Hall, she finds herself getting closer to realizing her dream when a plum position becomes available that would put her a step closer working directly for the mayor who has personal connections to the White House. But Vanessa’s hopes are dashed when her best friend, Penelope Newhouse, lands the coveted job. However, when Vanessa discovers Penelope murdered less than a hundred feet from the office she dreamed of occupying, her disappointment turns into devastation. Detective Rachel Storme and her team are put on the case and she soon finds herself delving into the underbelly of politics in search of the killer. The clues point to a litany of suspects, including the mayor. As usual, Detective Storme is determined to solve this case—a case so chock-full of dark and sinister twists and turns, it has her questioning her own competence.

Review:

A Penny for Her Heart begins with Vanessa heading into work at the mayor’s office on what should have been her day off, but duty calls.  She arrives and heads to her best friend’s office.  She and Penelope (Penny) met in college and have been best friends ever since.  Once Vanessa enters Penny’s office, she notices almost immediately that things seem a bit off.  Penny is nowhere around, which leads Vanessa to check the bathroom.  Little did she know that once she set foot in that bathroom, her world would be changed forever.  She sees blood everywhere and someone in a stall, but is so distraught all she can do is run out screaming for the security guard on duty to summon the police.

Rachel Storme is attending a cookout at Herb’s, who also happens to be her long-time partner at the police department.  When Herb gets the call that there’s been a murder at the mayor’s office, he and Rachel, along with co-workers Vincent and Carlos, who were also attending the get together, head out to the scene of the murder.  It doesn’t take Rachel long for that methodical mind of hers to start processing the scene and the people there.  She interviews Vanessa, who is understandably upset and ready to just go home.  Once finished, Vanessa heads out with the promise to call Rachel if anything of use comes to mind.

As the investigation progresses, Vanessa soon realizes that Penny had a whole other side that she never knew about.  Lies are uncovered, hearts are broken and Vanessa finds herself questioning everything she thought she ever knew about her friendship with Penny.  While Rachel and her team dig up clues and try to tie together a motive, she knows that the longer it takes them, the chances of finding the killer get smaller.  Add to that the family issues Rachel has with her scattered and irresponsible aunt, along with her mother’s Alzheimer’s disease……….some days she just can’t catch a break.  The one thing that she excels doing?  Pulling together the pieces of evidence and listening to her gut.

A Penny for Her Heart is another wonderfully written book by Alretha Thomas.  As I’ve said before, all of the characters in Mrs. Thomas’s books are relatable, as well as believable.  While reading this particular one, more than any of the others, I found myself wrong so many times when I thought I’d figured out who the killer was.  The twists and turns kept me turning the pages, but Rachel Storme keeps me coming back to this series.  Her determination and drive, along with a big ol’ heart, is very endearing.  I’m starting to feel repetitive in my reviews of this series, but Rachel is truly one of the most believable and realistic characters I’ve read in a long time.  Anyone would feel lucky to have such a person in their lives.  If you’re a mystery fan, this one will not disappoint.  And, as always, I look forward to the next installment.  Well done, Alretha Thomas!  Very, very well done!
