Touch of RedAmazon / B&N / Kobo / BAM / Book Depository

Description:
When crime scene investigator Brooke Porter arrives at the home of a murdered woman, the only thing more shocking than the carnage is the evidence that someone escaped the scene. But where is this witness now? A thorough search of the area yields more questions than answers, and before Brooke even packs up her evidence kit, she’s made it her goal to find the witness and get them out of harm’s way.

Homicide detective Sean Byrne has seen his share of bloody crime scenes, but this one is particularly disturbing, especially because Brooke Porter is smack in the middle of it. Sean has had his eye on the sexy CSI for months, and he’s determined to help her with her current case—even if it means putting his attraction on hold so he and Brooke can track down a murderer. But as the investigation—and their relationship—heats up, Sean realizes that keeping his work and his personal life separate is more complicated than he ever imagined; especially when the killer sets his sights on Brooke.

Review:

Touch of Red by Laura Griffin is the 12th book in her terrificTracers series, which is romance suspense at its best.  This series reads very well as a standalone, as in each book, the heroes are different members of the Delphi Center (forensics lab) and usually a detective working on the latest murder case.  It is always fun to get glimpses of some of the characters we have met previously.

Touch of Red starts off with a violent murder, and we meet our heroine, Brooke Porter, who arrives on the gory scene to investigate for any clues.  Sean Byrne, our hero, is a homicide detective who also arrives on the scene.  Sean has been eying Brooke for awhile, and now they will be working on the same case.  Both are appalled at the scene in front of them, and soon Sean notices that Brooke left in a hurry to bring some evidence to the Delphi Center lab.  She discovers that there may have been a witness to the murder, and surmises by her forensic tests that it is a young child.  The race is on to find the witness before the murderer finds out that someone was watching.

What follows is a very exciting adventure with so many twists and turns, it was important to not miss anything.   Brooke and Sean’s relationship escalated into a sizzling romance, with their chemistry together off the wall.  However, despite this sexy romance, the murder investigation is always the main focus of the story.  Sean becomes unnerved when he finds Brooke taking a personal approach to find the child, and he tries to tell her it is his job to investigate, and she should stay only with deciphering the evidence.

Brooke despite Sean’s warnings continues to get herself into situations that are not her job description, and puts herself in danger.  The last half of the book is an edge of your seat thriller that will not allow you put the book down. To tell too much more would be spoilers, which I do not want to do.   I loved Brooke and Sean together, and did think that Brooke went too far, and Sean was such a great hero, and perfect for Brooke.

I am a big fan of the Tracers series, which has a bit of everything; intricate mystery, murder, suspense, exciting,  great couple & secondary characters, as well as a sexy romance in the background.  But the best thing about this series is how Griffin uses her knowledge of forensic anthropology and police procedural throughout her books.  It is amazing to see how they can use different things for the clues they find; on just about anything.

Touch of Red continues the Tracers series with an amazing intense mystery that has you on the edge throughout the entire book.   If you enjoy a fast paced romance suspense, a murder mystery, with lots of action, intense situations and a touch of romance, then you should be reading Laura Griffin’s Tracers series. This is a wonderful series you should not be missing.

The Panther’s Lost Princess by McKenna Dean – a Review

The Panther’s Lost PrincessAmazon

Description:
Ellie West has always known there was more to her story than being abandoned at birth. A child of the foster-care system, she didn’t get many breaks, but the one thing she can do is sing. It’s her only ticket out of poverty and obscurity. Nothing else matters, not even the nagging sense that she’s different. She’s headed for great things. She only needs a chance.

Jack Ferris couldn’t agree more. His firm, the elite paranormal agency Redclaw Security, has been hired to find a missing princess and return her to her family. Discovering that Ellie, a waitress in a hole-in-the-wall diner, is both the princess and his fated mate is like being hit with a sledgehammer. Ellie West can’t be his mate. She’s the mission.

The sooner Jack completes this job, the better, only Ellie has no intention of throwing her dreams away for a kingdom she’s never known. With hired assassins on their trail, Ellie might not have a choice. They must do whatever it takes to stay alive.

Review:

The Panther’s Lost Princess by McKenna Dean is the 1st book in her new Redclaw Security series.

Ellie is a waitress with a dream, she wants out of the small town she lives in, she dreams of being a singer, so when a chance to audition, Ellie grabs it with both hands.
She knows she can sing, but Ellie lacks belief and confidence in herself.  Ellie thinks she’s a monster ……

Her parents abandoned her at birth, and the foster families never seemed to want her for long, there has to be something wrong with her ….. right?  And on the night it all comes crashing down around her, she notices things ….. things that a “normal” person shouldn’t be able to do.

Jack is employed by Redclaw security (a firm specializing in shifter business),  from bodyguards to surveillance.  He’s suppose to find a “princess” retrieve her and bring her back into the arms of her “real” family.

But what jack doesn’t bank on is finding his “mate”, yup you got it …… the princess, except she’s not what he was expecting, he assumed she would be tall, blond and a complete bitch …… “Ellie” is the exact opposite, and all his animal side wants to do, is bite, mate and carry her off to safety. But he knows that the princess would never look at a lowly bodyguard, she deserves better, and so he is determined to get her to safety and the live he thinks she deserves.

The story moves along at a nice pace, finding out about the characters along the way.
The secondary characters were great to read as well, I’m hoping they get stories too.
There is a nice balance of action (and not all between the sheets) and romance, nothing worse than skimming pages due to bedroom gymnastics (that last for pages, and pages, and pages)

Why was Ellie abandoned by her parents ? Who wants to kill her? (There are several attempts) and if she isn’t a monster, then what is she? Will Jack get his wish? You will need to read this book to find out.

It’s a fun read that can be done in an afternoon.

REVIEW: BRASH is the fourth installment in JC Valentine’s contemporary, adult SPARTAN RIDERS erotic, MC romance series focusing on the men and women of the Spartan Riders MC. This is Spartan Riders’ road captain Curtis ‘Taco’Nash, and former FBI agent Bambi Lane’s story line. BRASH can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary but I recommend reading the series in order as their is an ongoing war between the Spartan Riders and the Cruiz drug cartel. Curtis and Bambi’s story line begins in the previous installments wherein their relationship is kept secret from the other Club members.

Told from several third person perspectives including Curtis and Bambi BRASH follows the second chance romance between Spartan Riders MC road captain Curtis ‘Taco’ Nash, and former FBI agent Bambi Lane. One year earlier, as the war with the Cruiz cartel crossed over into their personal lives of the Spartan Riders’ families, Bambi Lane packed up leaving her hometown and Curtis behind. Their secret affair meant Bambi had no recourse with the Spartan Riders members; banned from the clubhouse, her affair with Curtis was hidden behind closed doors. Fast forward to present day wherein Bambi’s life has changed; she is free of the Spartan lifestyle but misses Curtis more than she ever could have imagined. A chance encounter with some of the Club members’ wives finds our heroine on the look out for the man that calls to her heart. Now that her secret is about to be revealed Bambi must prepare to face the wrath of the man with whom she had fallen in love. Enter Curtis ‘Taco’ Nash, Spartan Riders MC road captain who is determined to keep Bambi close by his side. The war with the Cruiz cartel continues to escalate, and everyone, including girlfriends and wives, are considered collateral damage in a game of betrayal and revenge.

BRASH looks at the volatile and dangerous MC lifestyle: the threats, the hazards, the intimidation, and the instability and insecurity of life in the MC. No one is safe when a traitor turns deadly; the Cruiz cartel will renew their attacks against the Spartan MC. The premise is dark and gritty; the characters are colorful and charismatic; the romance is a second chance for two people pulled apart by the uncertainty of the future.

excerpt

Lucina Cruiz was the devil. Wow, how many times had she heard that sentiment before? It always made her laugh though. She so enjoyed the fear in a man’s eyes before she cut them out. Even more, she enjoyed their screams, especially those last frantic pleas for mercy. The only thing she loathed was the constant lack of creativity.
One would think that staring death in the face would inspire some originality. Hell, it always inspired her, but then, she was the one doling it out, so maybe that was the difference. Still, she was a little bored with the whole “devil” nametag. It was becoming…cliché.
Perhaps she could hold a seminar about it.
Dressed in a brand new white satin negligée, Luciana stood over Manuel’s sleeping form. In her hand was the push dagger he kept in the top drawer in the table beside the bed. He had another under his pillow and a gun to go along with it.
Manuel had toys stashed all over the house, and she knew where every single one of them were hidden. No one did anything under her nose without her knowing about it.
As she did almost every night, Luciana waited for Manuel to fall asleep, and then she took out that dagger and stood over him, watching him sleep as she wondered how and when she’d do it. Kill him, that is.
It was on her to-do list, so it would happen. It wasn’t a matter of if, but when.
Just as she did every night, she lost track of time. Hours passed while she stared at him, memorizing his lithe form, those thick, muscular thighs and tight abs. He had the most beautiful face she’d ever seen on a man, but he was a killer. Just like her.
Two killers, both with ambitions, couldn’t coexist side by side. One day, it was going to come down to survival, and Lucina was determined to come out on top. She wasn’t called the Mantis for nothing.

Code of Honor by Tonya Burrows – a Review

Code of Honor by Tonya Burrows – a Review

Code of HonorAmazon / B&N / Kobo / BAM

Description
Jesse Warrick used to consider himself a kickass medic, but a teammate’s brush with death has him questioning everything. Now he’s been promoted to field commander of HORNET. How can he lead when he can’t get his shit together? And how can he focus when the sexy new recruit makes him want to break the rules?

Lanie Delcambre can’t seem to find solid footing within the elite hostage rescue team. Worse, the man she’s loved for most of her life is now her boss. She’d kill to act on the chemistry between her and Jesse, but she can’t risk ruining her career.

It was only supposed to be a training mission. No live ammo, no hostages, and no real bad guys—only someone didn’t give the bad guys that memo. When their hotel is taken hostage with half of HORNET inside, Jesse and Lanie are the team’s only hope of escaping alive

Review

Code of Honor by Tonya Burrows is a Hornet Novel. If you don’t know, Hornet is the name of the organization of mercenary operations taken on by this group. This is a good organization of heroes with military or enforcement service who take on operations. This is Jesse Warrick and Elena (Lanie) Delcambre’s story.

Author Burrows has written an excellent novel of adventure, danger, and reluctant romance. It’s well written with great fight scenes and conversations.

This wonderful group is as interesting as it is diverse. Most are heroic, if somewhat or sometimes dysfunctional. They do a serious and very dangerous job and often costs more than mere money can pay them to do.

You need to read the story to get the scoop on all the great characters and their relationships. They are interesting and very complicated. I don’t like to do spoilers but I will give you the gist and the setup of the beginning.

Jesse and Lanie were teenage friends with a lot of connection. A bit young for true love, but maybe not. However, Jesse managed to marry and have a son, then a divorce or two or four? Anyway, it’s been a lot of years and mileage, but Lanie has just come back into his life by training with Hornet.

Jesse’s at a very confusing and bad spot in his life. After years of getting it together, his ex-wife has sent his teenage son to life with him, basically because she doesn’t want to deal with him any longer. The son, Connor, thinks his dad doesn’t love or want him there. That’s not true, but he also knows his mom doesn’t want him around her ‘new’ family (a correct assumption).

Jesse wants Lanie with an almost uncontrollable need; she wants him pretty much the same way, but they’re fighting it with all they have. Neither thinks they’re right for marriage or love.

But things being what they are, they’re off to a training exercise with some recruits and some of the injured and older members of the team leading the way. Jesse allows his son to participate, after all, it’s only training. After the training, they’re headed for time in the sun as a reward.

Then all hell breaks loose at the resort. And I do mean hell…

It’s exciting, interesting, well-written and if you like military adventure and romance, this book’s a must read. I personally, am looking forward to many more of this author’s works. Yes, I’m now a fan!

It’s a relatively quick read and certainly hard to put down, so don’t!

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date October 16, 2017

Carl and Marianne were high school sweethearts, loving the way only teenagers can—with no thought to logic or pride, just a bone-headed, optimistic frenzy of unicorns and hormones. That was all they needed. Or so Carl thought.

Scared of being stuck in Lake Sackett, Georgia, like so many of her friends—without a real shot at a future or achieving her own dreams—Marianne panicked and bolted to college after stomping Carl’s heart into the high grass. But when she returns to Lake Sackett for the summer with her family after years away, she and Carl are drawn together like moths to a flame. As they rekindle their old romance and remember what it was like to be in love, they have to wonder: is this, finally, their real chance at happiness?

Perfect for fans of Kristan Higgins and Amy E. Reichert, this warmhearted and witty love story introduces Molly Harper’s new Southern Eclectic series set in the small town of Lake Sackett, Georgia. This story about second chances proves that “Molly Harper never lets the reader down with her delightfully entertaining stories. Humor, emotions, and romance are cleverly matched, and her likable characters are most appealing”

••••••••

REVIEW: SAVE A TRUCK, RIDE A REDNECK is the first instalment (and novella) in Molly Harper’s contemporary, adult SOUTHERN ECLECTIC sweet, romance series focusing on the men and women of Lake Sackett, Georgia. This is law student Marianne McCready, and auto mechanic Carl Dawson’s story line.

Fast forward four years, and our heroine, at the insistence of her mother, returns to Lake Sackett, Georgia to discover that old feelings burned deeply but a broken heart was harder to mend. SAVE A TRUCK, RIDE A REDNECK is a story of family and friendship; second chances and happily ever after. The world building looks at the usual assortment of townsfolk including the local gossip and busybody still intent on destroying people’s lives. ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date October 23, 2017

“I hate you. I never want to see you again.”

Grant Malone is not the reason I moved back to Sunnyville—at least that’s what I tell myself. Yet, those parting words I said to him back in third grade, ring in my ears every time a townsperson brings up one of the Malone boys. I thought time had healed my wounds. I was wrong. Nothing could have prepared me for how I felt when I finally saw him again.

Twenty years does a lot to turn a boy into a man. One who hits all my buttons—sexy, funny, attractive, and a police officer. But Grant is off limits because he knows too much about my past.

But I’m drawn to him. That damn uniform of his doesn’t hurt either. It’ll be my downfall. I know it.

What’s one night of sex going to hurt . . . right?

***

I’ve always loved Emmy Reeves.

That’s why I’m shocked to see her all these years later. The shy girl I once knew is all grown up.

Adventurous and full of life, she owns my heart now, just as much as she did back then. Convincing her of that is a whole different story.

I’ll give her the one night she asks for—like that’s a hardship—but when it comes to letting her walk away after, she has another thing coming. There’s no way in hell I’m letting her go this time without a fight.

••••••••••••

REVIEW: CUFFED is the first instalment in K. Bromberg’s contemporary adult EVERYDAY HEROES romance series focusing on the Malone brothers: Grant, Grayson and Grady Malone. This is police officer Grant Malone, and skydiving instructor Emerson ‘Emmy’ Reeves’ story line.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Emerson and Grant) using present day and memories from the past, CUFFED follows the rebuilding relationship between childhood friends Grant Malone, and Emerson Reeves. At the age of eight years old Grant Malone lost his best friend Emerson Reeves when secrets behind closed doors forced our hero to find a way to save the little girl he would always love. Fast forward twenty years wherein Emerson Reeves returns to Sunnyville in an attempt to start her own business-Blue Skies-a business that is currently struggling but available for sale. But for Emerson Reeves a return to Sunnyville also means a return of the long forgotten memories and pain of a time long ago-memories our heroine has buried along with her past. Enter Grant Malone, Sunnyville’s resident ‘sexy cop’, and the man Emerson blames for everything that went wrong. What ensues is the rebuilding but struggling relationship between two people whose lives went in different directions twenty years earlier.

Grant Malone’s reputation as a player precedes his re-introduction to our story line heroine but Emerson Reeves emotions and anger towards our story line hero are predicated on an eight year old child’s inability to deal with events that no eight year old child should ever endure. For close to twenty years Emerson has placed the blame on her nomadic lifestyle on the actions of an eight year old boy- a boy whose love and friendship with Emerson meant protecting the little girl at all costs. The focus of the story looks at one woman’s past, and her need to act out and strike at the young boy, now a man.

The relationship between Emerson and Grant is one of second chances; of a friendship destroyed by mistaken beliefs, time and distance; of one young girl’s horrific past and the buried memories of what happened and why. The $ex scenes are intimate and seductive, without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

We are introduced to Grant’s siblings: Firefighter Grady, and rescue pilot Grayson Malone; their parents retired police Chief Malone and his wife Betsy; Grant’s partner on the force Officer Nate; Emerson’s best friend Desi Whitman; Blue Skies jump coordinator Leo, and loan officer Chris Severson.

CUFFED is an emotional and heartbreaking story; a second chance for two people whose loved and lost so much more than a schoolyard friend. The premise is sexy, edgy and powerful; the characters are passionate and real; the romance is sensual and energetic. K. Bromberg invites the read into an intimate story of friendship and family; moving forward and letting go.

So yes, pretty much EVERYTHING!

Adam Carson is the oldest sibling of 5 and has taken on the responsibility as head of his family when his time travelling parents have become stuck in the past. After convincing his siblings to venture back in time with him to find them, they all begin to realize that they have bitten off more than they can chew .. and now have to struggle in a time when life offered no electronics for communication, was ridden with danger and a looming disaster so great it wiped out generations.

The siblings do split up and I loved that we get to experience time travel in different parts of the country, which offers different obstacles, and new experience for the reader to enjoy. There is “The Great Flood” of 1889 looming and it’s so sad that our smart siblings had no clue it was coming. This is different from most of John’s previous stories as his time travellers always had a strong researched sense of what they would be travelling back to. This was not the case for the Carson siblings and they experienced this flood true to time, as so many did. I have to say, I had a box of tissue at the ready for this part of the book, it was really intense.

There is so much more to this story, but my goodness, I have come to know that when I pick up a John A. Heldt book, I am in for a ride. This was no exception and to be honest I think this just may be my fave of his yet. This long read had a different feel than his previous books and I think it has to do with the urgency to travel back and not being completely prepared for what the past had to offer. There was a naive feel to it in some ways.

John is the master of character development and choosing the right words in the right way to make his reader feel like we are completely immersed in his story. Vivid images always came to mind, and well researched aspects of the 1880’s made the story feel so very authentic. I am a history lover so I truely appreciate it when an author does their homework.

SO SO HAPPY you are back John and I am SO SO looking forward to your next book. You never disappoint!

If you love the time travel, love the adventure, love the history and love the feels, then you will LOVE this book.

HAPPY READING! 🙂
