ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date October 3, 2017

He puts the hot…
Christian Watson, a former SAS officer and current BKI operator, never thought he would return to England after a terrible turn of events forced him to abandon his homeland. But now he’s back on British soil where old enemies are determined to do him in. Fighting for his life is pretty much SOP for Christian. Doing it with the beautiful, bossy Emily Scott in tow is another matter entirely.

In hot pursuit.
Emily lost her coveted job at the CIA because of a colleague turned rogue, and now she has just one rule when it comes to men: they’re for recreational purposes only. But when she and Christian are thrust into very close quarters while evading two mysterious men who want Christian dead, she can’t help but question all her ideas about love and life lived on the edge. Battling the bad guys is hard enough, battling her feelings for Christian just might prove impossible.

REVIEW: HOT PURSUIT is the eleventh installment in Julie Ann Walker’s contemporary, adult BLACK KNIGHTS INC romantic suspense /military, action series focusing on an elite group of ex Navy SEALS, FBI, CIA and military heroes headquartered at a custom motorcycle shop in Chicago known as Black Knights Inc. The men and women of Black Knights Inc. are so far under the radar that they are blacker than Black Ops. This is former British SAS agent Christian Watson, and former CIA employee Emily Scott. HOT PURSUIT can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary. Both Christian and Emily were introduced in earlier installments.

Told from several third person perspectives including Christian and Emily HOT PURSUIT picks up immediately upon the events of book ten FUEL FOR FIRE, and follows Christian, Emily, Jamin ‘Angel’ Agassi, former Navy pilot Colby Ventura, and former CIA operative Rusty Parker through Europe as they continue their search for the mysterious and elusive ‘Spider’ whose illegal business operations and ties have endangered the BKI team members both in Europe and back home. As the group endeavors to stay off the radar, the team becomes embroiled in a personal vendetta against one of their own. What ensues is the struggle to stay one step ahead of someone gunning for our story line hero; and the building but acrimonious relationship between Christian and Emily.

Emily and Christian have been dancing around one another for a sometime but our heroine is reluctant to get involved with Christian Watson. Christian’s past is darkened by memories of an abusive childhood, as well as time spent as a prisoner of war where he faced torture, and threats from his captors. Emily’s childhood and her parent’s numerous marriages have become the barometer against which she bases all of her own relationships and interactions, a barometer that refuses to allow our heroine to fall in love. Christian is a sexy, tattooed, and brooding well-dressed Brit who pushes all of Emily’s buttons- buttons she pushes back against Christian in return. The $ex scenes are limited, seductive and intense without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

There is a building story line and relationship between Colby Ventura and Rusty Parker. Both men are attracted to one another but Rusty has yet to come out of the proverbial closet and in this Colby struggles with his attraction to a man who is unwilling to admit the truth. A history of love and loss forces Colby to reveal the how and why of his battle with the man to whom he is attracted but Rusty’s reasons are in direct conflict to Colby’s previous loss.

There is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters including Angel, Colby and Rusty; police officers and brothers Ben and Lawrence Michelson, as well as several members of the BKI Team-Samantha Tate and Ozzie Sykes, Mac and Delilah McMillan, Penni (Dan) Currington, and Frank ‘Boss’ Knight and his wife Becky.

The world building continues to follow the latest assignment as the BKI Team in Europe searches for a dangerous businessman and possible killer.

HOT PURSUIT is a story of friendship and love; heartbreak and painful memories; revelations, the truth, intrigue, betrayal and revenge. The premise is exciting and entertaining; the characters are colorful, charismatic and dynamic-there is plenty of sexually charged back and forth banter; the romance is provocative. The story line involving the person known as ‘Spider’ was virtually non-existent but new revelations and information reveal a possible connection to one of the BKI heroes. Julie Ann Walker’s BLACK KNIGHTS INC. is an addicting series with great character interactions that humanize the heroes and heroines we love to follow.

excerpt

What was he doing?
What the bloody hell was he doing?
Emily didn’t realize it, but all her acts of caring, her selfless moments of kindness—from waking him from his nightmare to pulling him into the cab of the pickup truck—had torn open his chest, ripped out his heart, and served it up on a platter.
Then, when she had stepped in front of him, ready to take a bullet that was bloody well meant for him, he had stopped pretending that what he felt for her was lust mixed with a heavy dose of vexation. Stopped pretending that he wasn’t completely arse over teakettle about everything she did, everything she said. Each smile. Each laugh. Each witty quip.
In that moment, he had known. Heart. On. A. Platter.
All she had to do was take it.
Unfortunately, he was the one taking.
Taking a kiss she hadn’t granted. Taking a taste she didn’t return. Taking advantage of a beastly situation.
Had he lost his mind? Had he forgotten the unwritten rule? The one that was bold, underlined, and all in caps?
Not to mention, he’d lost control of himself, of the moment. He blamed it on the memory of Emily in that bastard’s grip. The sight of her there—a pistol to her head, her eyes wide with fear, but her jaw gritted tight because she refused to give in to it—was forever tattooed onto the backs of his eyelids. He knew he’d see it when he closed his eyes at night.
It took effort, but he ripped his mouth away from Emily’s and dropped his hands. Curling his fingers into fists, he locked his jaw until his molars begged for mercy.
“Whaaa?” She blinked up at him through the rain in confusion.
“Sorry.” He ground out. The word was guttural. Hard. “I shouldn’t have…” He shook his head, water flying from the ends of his hair. “Just…sorry, okay?”
Her mouth opened in a bewildered little O. That mouth that tasted like mint toothpaste with a lingering hint of buttered toast. His favorite flavor used to be Welsh cakes, but now it was Emily. Emily and her mint toothpaste with lingering hints of buttered toast.
“That won’t happen again,” he assured her before grabbing her hand and towing her toward the others.
He had thought for sure the man in the black pants and the white shirt was dead. Ben’s shot looked as if it had drilled the bloke directly in the heart. Which meant Christian felt like a total prat for stopping to ask Emily why she had stepped in front of him—for stopping to kiss her—when they arrived in time to hear the decidedly alive man whisper his name. “Philippe Dubois.”
“You’re Boss’s friend,” Ace said, applying pressure to Philippe’s wound. “You’re the former Armée de L’Air commandant.”
“Oui. C’est moi,” Philippe managed, water dripping from his chin and earlobes. He wasn’t wheezing. That was good. Meant the bullet hadn’t collapsed his lung.
“Don’t try to talk, Philippe,” Ace told him. “Rusty, call airport security.”
Christian was already pulling his mobile from his soaking hip pocket. The rain had let up. No longer a deluge, it was now more of a steady drip. “We don’t need security. We need an ambulance. This man needs to go to hospital.”
He dialed 999 without hesitation and waited for his call to connect. Dropping his free hand back to his side, he was startled when Emily grabbed it, threading her fingers through his. They felt dainty, delicate. And freezing wet. He desperately wanted to kiss them warmer, kiss them dry.
Glancing at her, he blinked the water from his lashes but couldn’t stop the questions in his eyes. So you forgive me? For taking without asking? For kissing you when you’ve given me no indication you were interested?
Before she could answer, an operator’s voice sounded in his ear, all efficient and bored. After explaining the nature of Philippe’s wound and what had happened in the vaguest of terms, he gave the operator their location. When she asked for his name, he growled, “That’s not what’s bloody important. What’s bloody important is a man’s been shot and needs help. Hurry!” He abruptly hung up. “Help is on the way,” he announced.
Philippe’s white shirt was soaked with blood despite the pressure Ace applied.
“Damnit,” Christian growled, looking around for something to stanch the bleeding. Nothing else for it, he decided, dropping Emily’s hand—he really, truly hated doing that—and shrugging out of his coat. Next came his sweater. He tossed both pieces of clothing to her.
His white cotton undershirt was wet and sticking to his skin, but it would have to do.

She’s off-limits, but Liam can’t stop thinking about the gorgeous vet and what could have been. But convincing her he’s changed will be harder than finding a needle in a haystack.

•••••••••••

REVIEW: HER OUTBACK SURPRISE is the second installment in Annie Seaton’s contemporary, adult PRICKLE CREEK clean, romance series focusing on a once tight knit family of cousins (Lucy Bellamy, Jemima Smythe, Sebastian Richards, and Liam Smythe) torn apart by the accident that caused the death of their three mothers. This is journalist Liam Smythe, and veterinarian Angie Edmonds’ story line. HER OUTBACK SURPRISE can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story line is revealed where necessary.

SOME BACKGROUND: When their aging grandparents called the cousins home, Lucy, Jemima, Sebastian and Liam wanted nothing to do with attending to the family farm but a deal was reached and each cousin would take a turn managing the farm, never intending to fall in love.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Angie and Liam) HER OUTBACK SURPRISE focuses on the second chance romance between journalist Liam Smythe, and veterinarian Angie Edmonds. Two years earlier Angie and Liam were a couple but Angie’s visa in London, England had expired and our heroine had no choice but to return to Australia, starting a new life without the man that she loved. Hoping Liam would follow, Angie left England, and her heart behind. Fast forward two years, and Angie will come face to face with the man that broke her heart-Liam Smythe-a man struggling with his future, and the pull of the Outback at home. What ensues is the rekindling romance between Liam and Angie, and the potential fall out as Liam reconsiders his future as a journalist, and his relationship with the woman he loves.

Liam and Angie met two years earlier in London England while Liam was on assignment and Angie as an exchange student studying abroad. When Angie’s visa expired, our heroine was hoping that Liam Smythe would drop everything to be with her, but months would pass, and Angie would have no contact with the man that she loved. An injured puppy would bring Angie and Liam together but miscommunication and a broken heart continued to force our couple apart.

The relationship between Angie and Liam is one of second chances; a rekindling romance between two people whose lives went in opposite directions. Angie knows Liam’s time in Prickle Creek is limited, and our heroine refuses to give what’s left of her heart to a man who is willing to walk away a second time. The $ex scenes are non-existent or vaguely implied; physical intimacy is limited to kissing and holding hands.

We are reintroduced to Lucy and Garth (Her Outback Cowboy #1 and their new arrival Jamie, as well as their grandparents Helena and Harry, and Liam’s puppy Willow.

Once again, be forewarned, because the author lives in Australia, HER OUTBACK SURPRISE contains expressions of slang and language terminology that may not be familiar to North American readers.

HER OUTBACK SURPRISE is a sweet story of second chances. There are moments of heartbreak and pain (I may have shed a tear or two), romance and love, family and friendship. The premise is heartwarming; the characters are colorful and energetic; the romance is fated.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date August 24, 2017

“Abby, what I’m asking isn’t something you have on that résumé…Will the LAPD be coming to arrest you when I’m depending on you to meet the deadline?”
She shook her head. How in the hell did she know?

She comes from Hollywood Royalty, which makes her fall from grace all the more interesting to millions of people who have no idea what Abby McCord is going through. Instead of following in her family’s acting footsteps Abby made her own way as an attorney. She also joined her good friend, Elli, in raising money for a cause near and dear to her heart, until someone steals their famous donors’ money and personal information. And the police believe the thief is her. Now she’s run from one LA to another as she hides in Cane, Louisiana trying to get by until she can get home.

Too bad there isn’t a statute of limitations on the public’s memory.

Jackson Bienvenu spent his adult life in the military because he wanted to get out of Cane and away from the people who know his desperate beginnings. Now all he wants is to come home and start a life and family in the one place he knows he belongs. And, this infuriatingly secretive woman who needs work until she can move on does not fit into the future he wants.

Unfortunately, Jackson and Abby are both discovering that what your head has planned and what your heart wants don’t always work together

•••••••••

REVIEW: Abby begins with the title character hiding out in a small house at her best friend’s home in Cane after attending the wedding of a friend. Unfortunately, or fortunately depending on your perspective, she didn’t stay hidden long. There was a knock on the door and Abby thought if she just stayed quiet, whomever was knocking would go away……until she heard Tante Izzy’s voice. When she finally opened the door, she found not only Tante Izzy, but the ever handsome Jackson Bienvenu as well. She finally gave in to Tante Izzy and headed to the reception with them.

Abby and Elli met during their treatment for breast cancer in California. Once they kicked cancer’s butt, they started a foundation in order to raise money to aide others fighting the same battle. Unfortunately, someone, somehow, stole from the foundation and fingered Abby for the crime. Although she wasn’t arrested, she remained a person of interest. With her assets frozen and no job, she applied for various jobs in and around Cane with the idea that she’d hide out there and once her name was cleared, she would head back to her life in Los Angeles. However, when she runs into a couple of people she had applied for work with, she’s pretty much told that she won’t be hired by anyone anytime soon.

Jackson, who’s an attorney as well, has a huge project that had a hard deadline and he needs help. Once he realizes that Abby is between a rock and a hard place, he offers her a job, which Abby reluctantly accepts. She soon finds herself surprised that she is not only enjoying the job, but Jackson’s company as well. However, when someone starts stalking Abby, things get scary pretty fast. Reluctant to accept Jackson’s help, she quickly realizes that she actually needs it. What follows keeps you guessing until the very end.

Abby is an awesome addition to the Second Chance series. Abby is a wonderfully written character, whom, despite her upbringing in the glamorous world of Hollywood, is a hard worker with her feet planted firmly on the ground. She’s loyal and has a big heart. Jackson is awesome as well. His love for his family and friends will endear him to everyone and leave you swooning. He has a protective streak a mile wide, without being overbearing. I love the main characters in DeSalvo’s stories, but it is the secondary characters who keep me coming back for more. That brings me to Tante Izzy. She is, without a doubt, one of the best characters I’ve read in years, if not ever. She IS the aunt/grandmother/friend/sister that everyone would love to have. She’s funny as hell, but it is her heart that will leave everyone clamoring for more. Her group of besties are just icing on the cake. If you enjoy a simmering romance with some of the best secondary characters you’ll ever read, the Second Chance Novels are definitely for you. I cannot wait to return to Cane. Well done, Tina DeSalvo! Very, very, very well done!!!!!

Deck the Halls by Donna Alward – a Review

Deck the Halls by Donna Alward – a Review

Deck the HallsAmazon / B&N / Kobo / BAM

Description:
In the last year, George’s life has drastically changed. The formerly homeless veteran now has a job he likes, a family in the residents of Darling, VT, and for the first time in years, a home. But while his present is good, he’s still haunted by the past, a past that appears shortly before Christmas when the older sister of his brother-in-arms hunts him down and finds him in Darling, working at the Ladybug Garden Center.

Amy’s looking for closure for her family after her brother’s death in the Middle East, but the serious man she finds working in Vermont doesn’t resemble the soldier she remembers from years before. This man is hardened and yet somehow fragile, too, and in her desire to find out what really happened to her brother, she learns more about George than she ever expected.

With a little Christmas magic and the whole town supporting them, can these two bruised hearts make a future together?

Review:

Deck the Halls by Donna Alward is a novella that is part of her wonderful  Darling, VT series.  Each book in this series is sweet heartwarming romances, and Deck the Halls continues this trend.  I loved this book, and the couple that we fell in love with from the start.

George, whom we met in the first book of this series, is a homeless veteran, who has PTSD.  Laurel and Aiden (the first book couple) befriended him and helped him slowly restart his life.   In Deck the Halls, George is our hero, starting to find a life working for Laurel, at the Garden Center;  living in a small apartment, and slowly allowing himself to make friends.  The past though still haunts him, which he never talks about.

Amy Merck, our heroine, comes to Darling looking for George to find closure on the death of her twin brother, who was George’s best friend and died in the Middle East.  When George sees Amy, he is shocked and immediately closes up, refusing to discuss anything with the past. When he tells her to leave, Amy sees he is not the same person.   The next day she returns, apologizing for not respecting his wishes.  She convinces him to go to lunch just to talk to each other, even if he can’t discuss what happened to change him so drastically.

What follows is a slow built romance that was very touching.  Amy herself had her own issues, having been divorced, but she was simply wonderful trying to slowly get George to open up and try to tell her what happened.  Slowly George will begin to trust Amy, and tell her how her brother died.  He blamed himself, but she knows from his descriptions that he was not at fault.  Amy was a fantastic heroine, as she did everything in her power to show George how much everyone in Darling cares about him, and to give their relationship a chance, as well as fight those demons that was destroying his life.

Donna Alward once again, gives us a wonderful story, with a fantastic couple, wonderful secondary characters, and showing us the terrible scars of PTSD.  Deck the Halls was a touching and heartwarming story, with a beautiful Christmas themed background.

27 Hours by Tristina Wright – a Review

27 Hours by Tristina Wright – a Review

27 HoursAmazon / B&N / Kobo / BAM / Book Depository

Description:
Rumor Mora fears two things: hellhounds too strong for him to kill, and failure. Jude Welton has two dreams: for humans to stop killing monsters, and for his strange abilities to vanish.

But in no reality should a boy raised to love monsters fall for a boy raised to kill them.

Nyx Llorca keeps two secrets: the moon speaks to her, and she’s in love with her best friend, Dahlia. Braeden Tennant wants two things: to get out from his mother’s shadow, and to unlearn his colony’s darkest secret.

To save everyone they love, they’ll both have to commit treason.

During one twenty-seven-hour night, these four runaways must stop the war between the colonies and the monsters from becoming a war of extinction, or the things they fear most will be all that’s left.

Review:

27 Hours is the first book in the Nightside Saga by Tristina Wright

This YA book has one of the most complex and diverse set of characters that I have ever had the privilege of reading.  27 Hours tells the story of teens who were raised and brainwashed to believe that the indigenous species (gargoyles) that occupies their colony on a moon in space called Sahara are bad.  The story begins with Rumor Mora who lives in HUB2 with his father being attacked by gargoyles.  While overcome by gargoyles and dragons his father tells him to escape and warn Epsilon the nearest colony.  Leaving his father was one of the hardest things he has ever done but he knows it is what he needs to do.

As we walk through the continuing story we meet several of the teen protagonists.  Rumor Mora who we find out is bisexual, arrives in Epsilon and gets acquainted with an old ex-girlfriend, Dahlia.  Dahlia Adams, who’s mom is chief medical officer at Epsilon is bisexual and trans.  We then meet Nyx Llorca, who is deaf, pansexual has two secrets – the moon speaks to her and she is in love with her best friend Dahlia, yet she is afraid to tell her how she feels.  Jude Welton, a forest-rebel is gay and he can see people’s emotions and intentions as colors surrounding them.  Braeden Tennant, the colony commanders son is asexual and by far one of my favorite characters.

The plot slowly unfolds and there ensues a war between humans colonizing Sahara and its indigenous beings known as the chimera (gargoyles).  The story develops deeper as the protagonists begin to learn that the chimera are people after all thanks to Jude, a forest rebel who dwells among the chimera. The characters are all on the LGBT spectrum hence making this one of the most if not the most diverse book I have ever read.  You come to find out that the chimera are clearly intelligent, sympathetic beings and not the savages that the humans have been led to believe they are.  While having 27 hours to save Sahara they also have time to build relationships and friendships.

27 Hours is clearly written as a story for our times.  Blending the effects of racism, prejudices along with the many folds of the LGBT spectrum.  I would recommend this to any young adult that loves sci-fi and is looking for a book that explores inclusion and acceptance.

After their husbands all but push them out the door, they meet up for a week of sun, relaxation, and reminiscing.

•••••••••

REVIEW: FOREVER OUR BOYS (Beaumont 5.5) by Heidi McLaughlin follows the ladies (Josie, Katelyn, and Jenna) as they embark on a week long getaway to the Bahamas, far from the paparazzi, and the glitz and glamor as wives and significant others of rock and roll stars. Although FOREVER OUR BOYS can be read as a stand alone I recommend reading the series in order for backstory and cohesion, as well as familiarity with the story line couples.

Told from three first person points of view (Josie, Katelyn and Jenna) FOREVER OUR BOYS is a reflective journey that focuses on memories of the past; regrets and revelations; friendship, family and love. The children are growing up; making names for themselves; success on the playing field, in front of the camera, in the music halls, theatres and the stage. We are up close and personal as three strong female leads find comfort with their lifelong friendships, as they reminisce about the past, and set off towards the future.

Heidi McLaughlin sets the stage for HOLDING ONTO FOREVER: The Beaumont Series: Next Generation- a spin off series that will focus on the children of the stars of the rock band 4225 West. The premise is heartwarming and informative; the characters are familiar, sassy and fun; the romances are provocative and sensual. FOREVER OUR BOYS ends on a cliffhanger-you have been warned.

During the middle ages, a peasant’s superstition held that a mother mourning the death of her child could “sell her sorrow” by selling a nail from her child’s coffin to a peddler.

Lady Celeste is overwhelmed with grief when her infant son dies. Desperate to find relief, she begs a passing peddler to buy her sorrow. Ok so you know when you read a book and after you are done you think “Where did that come from and my goodness that was strange and really really good!” NO? You will after reading this book. So out of the historical fiction “norm” that I am use to reading and I was pleasantly surprised.

The Sorrow Stone by J.A. McLachlan is a historical fiction novel with a side of superstition folklore, set in the medieval era (MY FAVE) in 12th century France. Plenty of authentic detail with regards to historical accuracy, I was very pleased that this author had done the research for what this time had to offer. I love my history and I admire an author who does their homework and weaves a fantastic story in a with true details/facts.

Lady Celeste is grieving the loss of her infant son. A superstition says that one can sell their sorrow by selling the nail of the coffin with it. Desperate for relief, she sets upon a peddler to buy it from her. Jean is said peddler, and he really doesn’t have much interest in Celeste until he sees the ruby ring on her finger. Before we know it, Celeste has sold her sorrow and her wedding ring. At first, Celeste is confused as to what had happened prior to meeting Jean, but she does recollect the importance of her ring. She must get her ring back or be cast off by her husband. Off she goes to find Jean and both have near misses and very strange journeys.

Ok so clearly I have oversimplified the story because let me tell you this is not a simple story. This is an author with excellent pacing and revealing tidbits as we progress with the characters. It is told in multi person, but the transition from one to another is done perfectly. I was never bored for one second reading this story and it felt a little like peeling an onion, so many layers and a few tears. I LOVED getting to know Celeste and Jean and as you know I love my romance .. I didn’t miss it! I loved how all things tied in and up … together.

I feel like I am not doing this book much justice here, so I will say two things to end this review. This book is INCREDIBLE and this book will keep you thinking long after you have finished it. If this is your cup of tea, then pick this book up and give it a shot.

HAPPY READING! 🙂

REVIEW

5 out of 5 for this reader folks!

Lauren Smith New Series = MORE YUMMY BOOK BOYFRIENDS!  LOL

There that says it all, the end!  Just kidding!  I could never leave one of my fave authors books hanging like that .. and most definitely not the first book of a new series.

Grigori by Lauren Smith is the first book in her new series called “Brothers of Ash and Fire”.  If you like paranormal romance, particularly dragon shifters, then this may be the book for you.  I have read all of Lauren’s books be it historical and/or contemporary romance, and I love that she is breaking into paranormal as well.  A quick read I would say that absolutely flowed page to page.  A slow build with real tangles of russian history, she really nailed this one and certainly has set up nicely for the next book.

Madelyn Haynes is a sweet girl, a virgin, a little boring to be honest, has an obsession with dragon mythology, believes dragons are real .. oh and she just happens to be a true mate to a real life dragon hottie and she doesn’t know it yet.  She does however come across some serious information about dragons that she needs to exploit, but fate has something else to deliver.

Enters fate .. Grigori Barinov (that name .. seriously .. sexy), is an elder ancient dragon shifter who is in charge of guarding his clan, he is rich, successful, powerful and not liking it one bit that a sweet woman is making inquiries and getting a little too close for comfort.  So to get to the bottom of it, he whisks her away to a remote location so he can get the answers he needs.  Well his answers come in the form of mate material and a whole lot of hell is about to be unleashed because of it.

These two were PERFECT together.  This was a beautiful romance with some sexy moments shared.  I thought that Lauren did a wonderful job detailing this new new world she has created with the proper balance of character development.  We were given peeks into characters to come, introduced to enemies, given real history with story weaved into it, and another way dragon shifters can get the blood pumping.

Totally impressed Lauren, this was amazing!  I am so pumped to read the next book!  So again, if you like Lauren Smith, like paranormal and/or like dragon shifters, snag this one up for sure.  Take a chance if you aren’t familiar, I promise it is worth it!
