REVIEW: BRETT: Bad Boys After Dark is the fourth and final instalment in Melissa Foster’s contemporary, adult BAD BOYS AFTER DARK erotic, romance series focusing on the Bad Brothers-Mick, Dylan, Carson and Brett. This is security specialist Brett Bad, and legal assistant Sophie Roberts’ story line. BRETT: Bad Boys After Dark can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information form the previous story lines is revealed where necessary.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Brett and Sophie) BRETT: Bad Boys After Dark follows the building romance between security specialist Brett Bad, and his brother Mick’s legal assistant Sophie Roberts. For months Brett has been secretly pining after Sophie Roberts but our hero doesn’t do relationships, a one night stand kinda man but a man who is haunted by memories of the past. Believing himself not worthy of love, Brett will push away the woman with whom he is falling in love in the hopes of not repeating the disaster that was his parent’s relationship. What ensues is Brett’s pursuit of Sophie Roberts, and the potential fall-out as Brett struggles with memories from the past, the loss of his sister, and the battle between head and heart as it pertains to the man who abandoned his wife and family years before.

The relationship between Brett and Sophie is one of mutual attraction but Brett’s reputation precedes his introduction to our story line heroine. Always keeping Brett at a distance Sophie knows that to fall in love means heartbreak further down the road. The $ex scenes are intimate, erotic and intense without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

There is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters including Brett’s brothers and their significant others. We are introduced to Sophie’s best friend Grace Montgomery, whose story line is next EMBRACING HER HEART- in the series spin-off The Montgomerys.

BRETT: BAD BOYS AFTER DARK is a sexy and sassy story line of romance, passion and a happily ever after. The premise is heart warming and inspiring; the characters are spirited and energetic; the romance is sensual, emotional and provocative. BRETT: BAD BOYS AFTER DARK is a wonderful tale about two people courageous enough to give love a chance.

Fall in love with the Wards…

Mechanic and garage owner, Kane Harmon is used to the wealthy beautiful women visiting his beach town. He doesn’t get involved because he knows most females would merely be slumming for the summer.

Except Halley Ward isn’t just passing through. She lives a solitary life in a bungalow on the beach. A woman tormented by her past, distant from her wealthy family, different from Kane’s usual fare of town girls who know his M.O.- Don’t expect more than he’s willing to give.

Kane rescues Halley and her broken down car from the side of the road and instantly he’s hooked. She says she’s not interested in him. He knows she lies. And he makes it his mission to bring her back to life, to return her emotionally to her family. To show her the colors around her were as vibrant as the ones she puts on her canvas.

Until past meets present and threatens all the progress they’ve made. Then it’s Halley’s turn to step up and stand up for the relationship and life she’s finally coming to believe she deserves.

•••••••••••••

REVIEW: FEARLESS is the first instalment in Carly Phillips’ contemporary, adult ROSEWOOD BAY erotic, romance series focusing on the Ward sisters-Halley and Phoebe Ward, and Juliette Collins. This is artist Halley Ward, and mechanic Kane Harmon’s story line.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Halley and Kane) FEARLESS follows the building relationship between mechanic and garage owner Kane Harmon, and artist Halley Ward. When a call comes into the garage about a broken down SUV Kane is surprised to discover his childhood crush Halley Ward at the side of the road looking for help. Kane had no idea that Halley, the girl that was bullied through most of her life, still lived in Rosewood Bay. From the outset, Kane’s attraction to Halley is met with resistance by our story line heroine, a resistance meant to protect Halley from further rejection by the people she loves. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Halley and Kane, and the potential fall-out when Halley’s past destroys what little trust Halley as built through most of her life.

Halley struggles to move on from the past, a past shrouded in the bitter memories of her mother’s battles with alcohol and drugs. Passed from foster home to foster home, our heroine’s earlier years control her present such that she is unable to let go, and move on from the past.

Kane Harmon’s life hasn’t been easy. While he and his sister Andi battle to keep one step ahead of their father’s addiction, Kane also struggles with issues of trust stemming from a woman who broke his heart.

The relationship between Kane and Halley is one of mutual attraction but Halley struggles with demons from her past, and low self-esteem as a direct result of her earlier life. Kane is falling in love with a woman who struggles with issues of trust, a trust that will be broken once again. He is a kind and gentle hero who is willing to accept everything in Halley’s past but Halley isn’t ready to allow Kane the benefit of the doubt. The $ex scenes are intimate, erotic and intense, without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

We are introduced to Kane’s father Joe Harmon; Kane’s sister Andrea aka Andi, and her seven year old son Nicky; Halley’s sister Phoebe, and her eleven year old son Jamie, their Aunt Joy, and Halley and Phoebe’s mother – a woman whose addictions almost destroyed the lives of the children she was meant to love. Phoebe’s story line is next in BREATHE.

The world building reveals the destructive nature of addiction, of rejection, of the destruction of childhood dreams.

FEARLESS is a sexy but predictable story line in that our heroine, so desperate for a relationship with the woman who abandoned her as a child, is too easily sucked in by the lies and fears of addiction and drugs. The premise is engaging; the characters are broken but colorful; the romance is seductive and hot.

Kane drove Halley to her house on the beach. He didn’t need directions until they got closer, since he didn’t know exactly where she lived. She was quiet on the trip over and he let her be, mostly because he didn’t plan to just drop her off and walk away. He had, while upstairs washing up, thought quite a bit about this enigmatic woman and whether he wanted to put in the effort to pursue her.
He normally didn’t have to work hard to get a female into his bed. Not that he was bragging, but ever since he’d been aware of his interest in the opposite sex, they’d come easily and willingly. He hadn’t had many long-term relationships, mostly because no one woman had held his interest for long, but he wanted to get involved with someone who could be with him for the long haul. His parents had had a good marriage despite his father’s failings. His mom had put up with the gambling, probably because it hadn’t been as bad when she was alive to keep him in check. And though Kane hadn’t met the right person, he’d like to.
Of course, he was plenty busy with his family, keeping his father on the straight and narrow and keeping an eye on his sister’s kid when he could.
Once he arrived at Halley’s cottage, which was a name many houses in this area had, he realized it was a misnomer. He took in the beautiful structure, the water lapping in the background, the gorgeous porch in the front, and the visible wraparound deck in the back, and he was struck with the enormity of Halley’s family’s wealth.
It didn’t bother him, not in the way of she’s out of my league. Which was odd, considering ever since Liza had slept with him, led him to believe she was interested in a relationship only to dump him when her summer at the beach ended, with her amused comment that he’d believe she’d remain involved with a mechanic, of all things, he avoided the women who vacationed here during the season. Women who rented the type of house Halley lived in for the hot months of July and August. But nothing about Halley screamed standoffishness because of either her money or family status, so he immediately put it out of his mind.
Nothing really mattered but chemistry and the genuineness of a person, or so he believed, something he’d never found in the summer visitors. But Halley, for all her wariness about people, was as genuine as they came. No airs. So yeah, he’d decided, though he didn’t know her well, he wanted to go for the pursuit.
He parked the car he drove, a classic royal-blue Camaro, and climbed out, determined to beat or at least meet her around by her side.
She’d already swung her legs out and stood, glancing at him with a confused expression on her pretty face. “What are you doing?”
“Walking you to your door,” he said with his most charming smile on his face.
“But… this isn’t a date. You’re dropping me off after doing me a favor.”
“Aah. But my father raised a gentleman, and a gentleman always walks a lady to her door.”

About the book: Release Date March 20, 2018

He saw her die in a vision…

Before five years ago, Gabriel had never met Vega, but he knows how she’s going to die. He knows he’ll be involved… unless he can make sure they never meet, never cross paths, so that his vision will never come true. So he left his pack behind, joined the Stavros pack and was determined to never let that future play out. To never meet her at all. Fate had other plans—and she walked right into his life when he least expected it. For the last five years he’s avoided Vega whenever possible even while trying to keep an eye on her. But when she gets cagey with her pack and disappears, he has no choice but to follow her. Now, circumstances are forcing them to work together and he’s determined to protect her against any threat. If that means dying for her, he’s more than willing to. But she doesn’t want his protection. If anything, she’s determined to prove she’s stronger than everyone thinks.

She’s writing her own future…

Vega isn’t the same moody teenager who came to live with the Stavros pack all those years ago. With college behind her, she’s been recruited by a division of the government’s supernatural Black Ops. Trained and more than ready for her first mission, she doesn’t expect Gabriel to crash her assignment. To save her cover, they pretend to be a couple. But soon lines are blurred and neither can deny the incendiary attraction between them. As they race to stop a man who wants to sell out their people to the highest bidder, they find themselves fighting for a future together. With time running out, she has no choice but to rely on the irresistible male who’s turned her world upside down. Unfortunately, in order to save the woman he loves, Gabriel has to give her up.

•••••••••••

REVIEW:  GUARDIAN OF DARKNESS is the seventh full-length instalment in Katie Reus’ contemporary, adult DARKNESS paranormal, fantasy romance series. This is wolf shifter and Stavros Pack guardian Gabriel, and vampire/wolf hybrid Vega Stavros’ story line. GUARDIAN OF DARKNESS can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary although I recommend reading the series in order for backstory and cohesion.

Told from several third person points of view including Gabriel and Vega, using present day and ‘letters’ from the past, GUARDIAN OF DARKNESS follows the hunt for a traitor, a shifter willing to sell secrets of the paranormal to the highest bidder. Vega Stravros is the newest member of the government’s supernatural Black Ops team, a position she has trained for the past few years. When her father’s Guardian, the man that calls to her heart but a man that refuses to acknowledge their attraction, walks in on Vega’s latest assignment, our heroine must come to terms that not everything is as it seems. Enter Gabriel, her one-time bodyguard, and the man with whom Vega is still in love. What ensues is the ‘pretend’ lovers relationship between Vega and Gabriel as the couple must go undercover in an effort to ferret out the traitor hiding in a place Gabriel knows only too well.

Gabriel walked away from Vega two years earlier when a seer showed our hero the future-a future wherein Vega would die in Gabriel’s arms. Gabriel intends to keep his distance believing he can change the future, a future he knows will break his heart. Vega Stavros has no idea why the man that she loved walked away without a backward glance. Intending to move forward without the man she believed was her intended mate, Vega will come to learn the truth about the past, the present and their future.

There is a large ensemble cast of colorful secondary and supporting characters, most are familiar but with the re-introduction of the Black Ops Team including August McGuire, Neema and Eli, and Gabriel’s cousin Judoc McGrath and his Pack, there is the potential for many more story lines especially with the discovery of a long, lost ancient.

GUARDIAN OF DARKNESS is a sexy thrill ride with sassy characters and an intriguing plot. The premise is entertaining and engaging; the characters are familiar and intense; the romance is fated and seductive.

The Broken Girls by Simone St. James – a Review

The Broken Girls by Simone St. James – a Review

Amazon / B&N / Kobo / BAM / Book Depository

Description:
Vermont, 1950. There’s a place for the girls whom no one wants–the troublemakers, the illegitimate, the too smart for their own good. It’s called Idlewild Hall. And in the small town where it’s located, there are rumors that the boarding school is haunted. Four roommates bond over their whispered fears, their budding friendship blossoming–until one of them mysteriously disappears. . . .

Vermont, 2014. As much as she’s tried, journalist Fiona Sheridan cannot stop revisiting the events surrounding her older sister’s death. Twenty years ago, her body was found lying in the overgrown fields near the ruins of Idlewild Hall. And though her sister’s boyfriend was tried and convicted of murder, Fiona can’t shake the suspicion that something was never right about the case.

When Fiona discovers that Idlewild Hall is being restored by an anonymous benefactor, she decides to write a story about it. But a shocking discovery during the renovations will link the loss of her sister to secrets that were meant to stay hidden in the past–and a voice that won’t be silenced. . . .

Review:

The Broken Girls by Simone St. James is my first book by this author.  When I started this book, I wasn’t sure what to expect.  Upon completing this book, I now have to research more about St. James, as I loved The Broken Girls

This book revolves around two different time periods, and two POV’s.  The first POV is set in 1950, where 4 young girls are sent by their family to Idlewild Hall, in Vermont.  The boarding school is a place where troubled girls are sent, and we meet Katie, Roberta, CeCe and Sonia, who become roommates.  The school is rumored to be haunted, where both students and teachers fear a ghost called Mary Hand.  We watch and learn about these girls, their lives, their fears, and how they ended up in the dismal spooky Idlewild.  Katie is the strong and beautiful one, CeCe is a follower and Roberta is smart.  Sonia is from Europe, and has no family.

In 2014, Fiona Sheridan is a journalist, who has grieved for 20 years the death of her sister, who was murdered on the grounds of Idlewild, which is now decaying and closed.  Her sister’s murderer is in jail, but Fiona cannot get past the questions of why her sister’s boyfriend, who still claims his innocence, would murder her.  When Idlewild is purchased with the plan of renovating the school, Fiona’s journalistic mind plans to research and find evidence to help her solve the old murder.   Along the way, a body is found in the well, and the death took place in 1950, which has Fiona also researching that death.  Is there any connection to the two deaths 64 years apart?

This was a terrific suspenseful, dark and at times scary story that had me on the edge of my seat.  Once you get to the half way point, there is no putting this book down. There are so many secrets between both sides, as we go between both pov’s, with the death of the girl in 1950 bringing some things together.  The twists and turns, with an amazing surprising finish were so well done by St. James.  Fiona will find her life in danger, as she continues her investigation into both era’s.

To tell too much more would be spoilers, and you really need to read this book from start to finish.  St. James not only has created a fantastic amazing Gothic thriller, but she also gives us some wonderful characters that we will not forget;  Fiona, the 4 girls in 1950, Fiona’s boyfriend, the Edens, the Ghost and the villain.

The Broken Girls is an awesome and exciting mystery, that had a slight paranormal element that was done very well, giving this a chilling gothic feel at times.  The mystery has so many surprises, and I fully loved how this ended.  Simone St. James did an amazing job writing this captivating thriller.  I suggest you read this book..now.

Veiled Enchantments by Deborah Blake – a Review

Veiled Enchantments by Deborah Blake – a Review

Amazon / B&N / Kobo / BAM

Description:
Still reeling from her unwitting involvement in murder and subsequent break up with a half-Dragon art forger, Witch-cop Donata Santori is grateful for the distraction when her ex-lover requests her help. Not only are Magnus’s beloved dead suddenly haunting the Ulfhednar shapechangers in his tiny rural hometown in Maine, their patron god Odin has turned his back on them, and the members of their once tight-knit enclave are at each other’s throats. Literally.

Magnus is relying on Donata’s experience in dealing with the gods, along with her magical ability to summon the dead, to help him unravel this mystery in time to save his clan. Donata only hopes to survive the ordeal so she can return home to the city and her quiet job at the precinct.

But first, she must discover who or what is behind the terrible attacks on the Ulfhednar. And the clock is ticking, in more ways than one…

Review:

Veiled Enchantments by Deborah Blake is the 3rd book in her Veiled Magic series.  Donata Santori, our heroine in this series, is a witch, who talks to the dead, and a police officer.   She is coming off of a difficult case, when Magnus (shapechanger), her ex boyfriend returns to ask for her help.  She hasn’t seen him since he went home to Maine to rekindle with his family.  Now Magnus needs Donata’s help, since he and his fellow Ulfhednar’s are being haunted by the dead during their training.  He tells her that her witch abilities would help try to find out what is happening; as well as helping them find out why Odin, their god hasn’t had contact with them for a long time.

Donata decides to take a needed break, and goes to Main with Magnus.   Donata and Magnus still care for each other very much, but his family responsibilities have kept him away.  Now with him bringing Donata home, she will have to face the brunt of his family and Ulfhednars who are not happy with her arrival.

Magnus’s mother welcomes her, and slowly the rest of the family will come to accept her and realize that she is the only one who could help them.  Donata will meet all the members of the team who are in training to be Berserkers and protect all Ulfhednars.  At first she will have a hard time getting information about the ghosts, but after some new accidents, some will open up to Donata with descriptions of what they saw.

While Donata tries to solve the problem, she will need expertise from her aunt on how to handle things that have gone wrong.  There are a few surprises that Donata will have to face along the way that she did not expect.   When she manages to summon Odin, and finds the truth of his not responding to the clan’s call for help, Donata will gain the respect of most of the town.

What follows is an exciting and romantic storyline that keeps our attention throughout the book.  Magnus and Donata are great together, as they both love each other, but can they stay together, especially when she returns home to her job.  Will love prevail?

The secondary characters, mostly from Magnus’ family were very likable.   It was an exciting last 1/3 of the book, which I cannot tell too much more, as it would be spoilers.   The truth of who is behind the ghosts, and why will be revealed.  Veiled Enchantments was a fun, entertaining story, with a hot sexy couple that you can’t help but love.  I am not sure if this is the end of the series, but I do hope it continues.

••••••••

REVIEW: PROTECTED is the third instalment in Elisabeth Naughton’s contemporary, adult DEADLY SECRETS romantic, suspense series focusing on the four adopted McClane siblings (Ethan, Alec, Kelsey, Rusty) who are forced to confront their childhood demons. This is up and coming designer Kelsey McClane, and former Army Ranger/security specialist Hunter O’Donnell’s story line. PROTECTED can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary.

NOTE: For fans of Darcy Burke, there is a slight cross-over with the author’s Ribbon Ridge series with the mention of the Archer sextuplet, Evan and Alaina Archer, and the Alex Hotel.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Kelsey and Hunter) PROTECTED follows the safety and protection of designer Kelsey McClane following an explosion that forced our heroine, and her personal security guard and her brother Alec’s (Gone #2) best friend Hunter O’Donnell into hiding. A series of threatening texts, wiretaps and perfectly timed, clandestine but anonymous photos of our couple, from an unknown source, reveal a personal connection to our story line heroine but a connection that Kelsey knew nothing about. What ensues is the friends to lovers/best friend’s little sister building relationship between Kelsey and Hunter, and the potential fall-out when Kelsey’s past seeks retribution for a perceived series of sins not of her making.

PROTECTED is a story of suspense, mystery, retribution and revenge. Kelsey was given up for adoption at the age of two but never knew her birth mother, or the answers to her troubled beginnings. Hunter has always considered Kelsey off-limits; his best friend’s little sister, but a woman with whom he would grow to love. Kelsey and Hunter’s demons ride close to the surface; trust is an issue both struggle to accept. The $ex scenes are intimate and intense; the sexual chemistry is palpable but Hunter struggles between his friendship with Alec and the McClane family, and his ability to protect the woman with whom he is falling in love.

All of Kelsey’s siblings play secondary and supporting roles including Ethan, Alec and Rusty. We are introduced to Kelsey’s ex-husband Julian Benedict, a man obsessed with our story line heroine; and Hunter’s ex-girlfriend Genevieve who refuses to accept that she is no longer wanted. The requisite evil has many faces who add a twist or two to the story line mystery.

PROTECTED is a complex tale between the past and the present; vengeance against a woman caught totally unaware; and a man who battles his attraction to a woman he has sworn to protect. The premise is action packed, intriguing and entertaining; the romance is seductive and passionate; the characters are broken, charismatic and energetic.

GhostWalkers #14
by Christine Feehan
Genre: adult, contemporary, erotic,paranormal suspense
Release Date: March 20, 2018

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date March 20, 2018

Rescuing an industrial spy from the hands of a criminal mastermind is a suicide mission for the GhostWalkers. And there’s no one more up to the task than Gino Mazza. He’s the perfect killing machine–a man driven by demons so dark and destructive that his blighted soul has given up trying to find solace. But his laser-sharp focus on his target has transformed into something nearing desire.

A treasonous senator dangled top secret GhostWalker data in front of a Chinese crime lord, and he bit. Zara Hightower, one of the world’s leading experts on artificial intelligence, was sent in to psychically wipe the crime lord’s computer network. She succeeded, but at a huge cost. Now she’s the captive of a man who has descended into paranoid madness. Torture and death await her…

But GhostWalkers never leave one of their own in enemy territory. And it’s up to Gino to save Zara, or kill her if it turns out she’s led them into a trap. Either way, heaven or hell won’t stop him.

••••••••••

COVERT GAME is the fourteenth instalment in Christine Feehan’s contemporary adult GHOSTWALKERS paranormal, romantic suspense series focusing on an elite group of ‘genetically enhanced’ men and women known as the GhostWalkers. These ‘super soldiers’ were once part of an unauthorized government experiment performed by Dr. Peter Whitney-a man tantamount to evil incarnate. This is GhostWalker/hunter Gino ‘Phantom Wind’ Mazza, and industrial spy/GhostWalker Zara Hightower’s story line. COVERT GAME can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary but I recommend reading the series in order for backstory and cohesion.

WARNING: COVERT GAME contains very descriptive scenes of graphic violence and torture that may not be suitable for all readers.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Zara and Gino) COVERT GAME follows the abduction, torture and eventual rescue of enhanced female Zara Hightower. Considered a genius in the world of AI (Artificial Intelligence), Zara was Dr. Whitney’s pawn; an industrial spy whose special abilities superseded what the evil doctor considered her glaring failures. Sent to ‘download’ a file about the GhostWalkers, from Chinese crime lord Mr. Cheng, Zara found herself trapped by a man, Bolan Zhu, whose reputation in specialized torture preceded our heroine’s visit to Shanghai. What ensues is the rescue and recovery of our Zara Hightower; the building relationship and romance between our leading couple; and the fall-out when several teams of Whitney’s enhanced soldiers, and Bolan Zhu, are sent to recapture our story line heroine.

Team Four never expected to honor one of Dr. Whitney’s requests but the rescue of Zara Hightower meant the rescue of one of their own. Prepared for anything, Gino Mazza suspected the rescue was a trap, but a trap that found our hero falling in love.

The relationship between Gino and Zara is one of immediate attraction but unlike the earlier GhostWalker story lines there is no proof that the attraction is chemically connected or fated by enhanced DNA. Gino is an alpha male; a dominant man who is quick to protect the woman with whom he is falling in love but a dominance that appears to be genetically matched to our heroine’s submissive personality. The $ex scenes are intimate, erotic and intense without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

Most of GhostWalker Team Four (and their significant others) play secondary and supporting characters: Diego Campo, Draden Freeman, Ezekiel Fortunes, Team leader Joe Spagnola, Malichai and Mordichai Fortunes, Trap Dawkins, Rubin Campo and Wyatt Fontenot, along with Wyatt’s Nonny Grace Fontenot.

COVERT GAME is a story of power, abuse, betrayal and revenge. As the series continues to develop the author has changed the original direction of the series in that the enhanced soldiers no longer need or require a ‘female’ to anchor their abilities (Team 1); and the most recent instalment does not confirm or deny the existence of genetically matched DNA between two unsuspecting GhostWalkers, both changes the author addresses in the current story line.

Most of the recent male GhostWalkers volunteered for the genetic enhancements such that to blame the doctor for many of their problems is not necessarily true but Dr. Whitney’s ongoing experiments with the female GhostWalkers, many of whom were abducted and tortured at an early age, is still quite prevalent throughout the series. As well, our heroine appears to have no psychic power, or the ability to communicate psychically with the man that she loves, something that wasn’t addressed in this particular story line.

I would also like to point out the author continues to justify Trap’s abusive behaviour in Spider Game (GhostWalker #12) as a by-product of Asperger’s Syndrome –a plot point that was never mentioned in Trap’s story line- Spider Game- but has been addressed in the last two instalments in an effort, I believe, to appease the many negative comments and reviews about Trap’s abusive and controlling behaviour. In this, there is also much talk between the heroines, throughout Covert Game, rationalizing and accepting their mates’ controlling behaviour-something I see as the author, once again, as trying to defend her male characters’ less than favourable characteristics. I do not have a problem with alpha males in my ‘fictional’ story lines but the increase in controlling and somewhat abusive behaviour is something the author is most likely trying to address and explain via her female leads.

COVERT GAME is a suspenseful and action packed story line. Gino will seek retribution for the woman he loves, retribution that is equal to the torture inflicted upon our story line heroine. The premise is startling, dramatic and intense; the characters are intelligent, complex and charismatic; the romance is intimate and emotional. COVERT GAME is an intriguing and fascinating look at the paranormal.

Zara was being tortured. He knew she was. Cheng would never lose that data and let a foreigner leave his country. After, he would have to kill her. Even if she never admitted she was spying for Whitney, or running a mission, Cheng would still have to kill her. How could he not? He couldn’t rely on her not talking about being detained and tortured. She might have the United States lodge a protest on her behalf. Cheng’s government would have no recourse but to investigate. No, he had to kill her.
How long did she have? He was suddenly anxious to get started. They were making one last night jump, and he wanted to get it over and get on the road. He was a doctor, a damn good surgeon, and he had a healing touch. That was always a shock to him because his hands killed. Not just killed outright either. Ciro had taught him that sometimes killing cleanly didn’t send the right message. If you wanted others to pay attention and fear you, killing cleanly didn’t get you what you wanted and you did it another, very ugly way.
He didn’t like inflicting pain on anyone, but he didn’t mind either. He could shut down. He had shut down when intruders had murdered his family one by one in front of him. When they shot him three times and left him for dead. Over money. It had all been over money. He detested that money more than anything else. They had broken in with the idea of taking Gino and ransoming him back to his parents. His parents and grandparents had refused to let him go. They wouldn’t step aside.
Gino remembered trying to push them aside and get around them, so no one would get hurt, but his father had quietly stopped him. He’d shaken his head and told the intruders very softly that he wasn’t giving up his son. That was a man taking care of his family. He hadn’t resisted, or tried to hurt the intruders, he’d simply said no.
Being nice didn’t work with some men. Being nice was equated with weakness. Gino had made certain he would never be equated with weak. Like Ciro, he learned to be strong and feared. He wanted to be feared so no one would touch the people he loved. So no one would ever try to do to his child what had been done to him. Money cost him his parents and he’d turned his back on it. That was ironic, because now he was far wealthier than his parents had ever been. What was more ironic was the fact that he’d shaped himself into a man to be feared so no one would touch those he loved—but he was so cold and dark no woman would ever love him for himself.
The sky was clear tonight, and the moon shone over the water. A light fog moved through the forest, giving the interior an eerie glow when the sky and water were both so clear. He stared into the trees, looking at those fingers of fog pointing toward him. He didn’t believe in signs or fate the way Nonny did. She saw signs in everything from rings around the moon to horny toads jumping across the road.
“We’re coming for you, princess,” he whispered to the night and hoped she heard him. Hoped she could hold on. “I’m coming for you and nothing will stop me. Not heaven. Not hell. I’m not leaving you in that place.” He’d already made up his mind she wasn’t working with Whitney, and that was plain stupidity. He wasn’t a stupid man. It didn’t matter. “I’m coming, baby, just hold on a little longer.”
That was another thing he had to consider as he made his way back to the small airfield where they’d go through the jump one more time before they packed their gear for the night. Zara Hightower was smart. Way the hell smart. Like Trap smart. She was used to being in the spotlight, and he didn’t want that life. He didn’t want any one of his family members to ever set themselves up as targets. That wouldn’t happen. She traveled the world, giving her talks. She might need that. Still . . .
“Won’t make a difference, princess,” he whispered again. “I’m coming for you. Just hang on.”
The jump went far smoother than he expected. They knew the feel of the power paragliders as they steered their chutes down to the rooftop. Each knew where he had to come down to avoid hitting the others. They were out of their gear and into formation in minutes, cameras disrupted, and then they went through the entire routine of finding the prisoner. Every movement was planned in advance including what to do if she wasn’t able to walk.
“Good job, everyone,” Ezekiel said. “Okay, everything is set with getting out of here and joining the work crew. We leave at twenty-four hundred hours. You have two and half hours to get everything ready and reset. Adjust your gear, get your chute repacked, do whatever you’re going to do, but be back here on time ready to kick ass and get our girl back. You can sleep on the plane, it’s a long journey. And remember, the minute you leave here, you are no longer soldiers, you’re construction workers.”
Gino inclined his head and went to work. He knew exactly what he was—and he was neither.

WILDER MIND: Wild Irish (Kindle Worlds Novella) by Taryn Quinn

Amazon.com

About the book : Release Date March 13, 2018

Forever is the lyric he has on repeat.

Rockstar Myles Vaughn quit his band to escape the pressures of fame. He’s ready to leave LA and the glamorous music scene behind, but only if he has his best friend, Felicity Hudson, by his side.

And in his bed, clad in nothing but her tattoos.

Now that he’s back in town, he has one weekend to blast the friend zone to pieces with a plan to win the woman he’s always loved.

But Felicity has plans of her own. After giving her notice, she bought a ticket to visit Myles, ready to hop a tour bus with him to anywhere. There are beds all over the world, right?

And walls.

And floors.

Putting down roots? Not for her. Not now.

Unless perhaps this time they can agree to meet in the very steamy middle…

REVIEW: WILDER MIND by Taryn Quinn (Taryn Elliott / Cari Quinn) is part of the multi-author WILD IRISH Kindle Worlds Novella series, as well as the author’s WILDER ROCK series set in the world of the OBLIVION series. This is keyboardist for the rock band Wilder Mind Myles Vaughn, and bar waitress/bookkeeper Felicity Hudson’s storyline. WILDER MIND can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story line in the Wilder Rock series is revealed where necessary but I recommend reading ROCKSTAR DADDY for Myles’ backstory and the events leading up to his breakup with the band.

NOTE: Each book in the Wild Irish Kindle Worlds novella series is a stand alone.

Told from dual first person points of view (Myles and Felicity) WILDER MIND is a second chance story line between keyboardist for the rock band Wilder Mind Myles Vaughn, and bar waitress/bookkeeper Felicity Hudson. Two years earlier, Myles walked out of Felicity’s life as he and his band mates for Wilder Mind headed out on tour. Fast forward to present day wherein Myles has quit the band, and returned home to Phoenix, Arizona in an attempt to rekindle the relationship with the woman he has always loved. What ensues are Myles attempts to win back Felicity Hudson, and the potential fall-out as Felicity has other plans that currently do not include the man that destroyed her heart.

WILDER MIND is a fast paced, second chance romance between two people whose lives went in opposite directions. Felicity had always hoped that Myles would invite her out on the tour; Myles continued to struggle with the loss of his best friend so much so that is affected his relationship with the guys in the band. Myles had lost his muse, and his daily battle with stardom and success. Returning to Phoenix our hero had plans to settle down but first he had to make one last attempt to woo the woman he had always loved. The premise is energetic; the romance is fated; the characters are familiar, colorful and full of life. WILDER MIND: Wild Irish is an erotic, passionate and emotional story line.
