Features a special preview of J. R. Ward’s upcoming Black Dagger Brotherhood novel, The Thief!

The last place Ivie expects to be approached by a devastatingly handsome male is in a crowded, smoky cigar bar rarely frequented by vampires—yet here he stands. Silas is flirtatious, gallant, and, above all, mysterious. Ivie is anything but. A nurse at the healer’s clinic and the daughter of a biker, Ivie is accustomed to speaking her mind. So she does. Since aristocrats rarely pick up females of her class, Ivie asks Silas just what kind of game he thinks he’s playing.

Despite her guarded exterior, Ivie surrenders to the fierce desire she feels for Silas. And yet, just as their courtship is heating up, he reveals that it cannot last, for he is bound to return to the Old Country. Their bond only deepens as they make the most of their precious time together. But when she learns the truth, Ivie must find a saving grace—before all is lost.

••••••••••

REVIEW: DEAREST IVIE by JR Ward is a novella set in the world of the Black Dagger Brotherhood focusing on aristocratic vampire Silas, and nurse Ivie, who works for Havers at his clinic.

Told from third person perspective (Ivie) DEAREST IVIE follows the building relationship between an old country vampire Silas, a member of the aristocrat, and Ivie, a young nurse struggling from pay cheque to pay cheque. When a recent job interview found our heroine unacceptable due to her age, Ivie and her best friend Rubes spend a night on the town where Ivie will meet her future, a future with an end date that Ivie knows nothing about. Enter Silas, a well-to-do vampire aristocrat whose attraction to Ivie is swift and powerful.

DEAREST IVIE is a quick read; an emotional but predictable story line about opposites attract that reveals some of the struggles and disparity between the have and the have nots. The interaction with the BDB is negligible except for the mention of the King. The secondary and supporting characters are familiar with the inclusion of Havers, Doc Jane and Ruhn. We are introduced to Silas’s majordomo Pritchard, Ivie’s father Hirah-a tattooed vampire biker, and of course Ivie’s bestie and fellow nurse Rubia aka Rubes.

JR Ward leaves a few open ended plot points including Silas’ hunt for his missing brother, as well as the potential for a story line for Ivie’s best friend Rubes. The premise is sweet, heart breaking and emotional; the romance is quick and intense; the characters are colorful and charismatic.

Still, she’s not going to be ordered around just because of some half-assed threat to her father. . . . REVIEW: RAW POWER is the first instalment in Jackie Ashenden’s contemporary, adult 11th HOUR romantic suspense series focusing on the men and women who work for 11th Hour Security. This is former US Marine Jack King, and socialite Callie Hawthorne’s story line.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Callie and Jack) RAW POWER follows the building romance between former US Marine Jack King, and socialite/Senator’s daughter Callie Hawthorne. Hired to protect our story line heroine Jack King doesn’t want to babysit a spoiled socialite especially one who doesn’t seem to give a damn about her personal security. But an attempt against her, along with a number of hidden cameras found in her small apartment, find our heroine beginning to understand that Jack King is the least of her worries. What ensues is the building relationship between Jack and Callie, and the potential fall out when Callie’s life becomes fodder for the man in charge.

Callie Hawthorne has lived a life of sheltered abuse by a man whose public persona is matched by the evil that has become her life. Trying to get away places everyone, including Jack King, in danger, a danger she isn’t willing to risk for the man with whom she has fallen in love. Jack King is new to the personal security business, so new his first assignment goes all to h*ll when he isn’t willing to play by the rules in an effort to protect the woman with whom he is falling in love. No one, not even his new boss, is able to force Jack to give up on the woman he has been tasked to protect. Scarred both inside and out, our hero refuses to lose another soul to the evil that has followed him from most of his life.

The relationship between Callie and Jack begins acrimoniously. Callie comes across as a spoiled socialite, a role she has been groomed to perform from a very young age but a role she hides behind in the face of the truth at home. Jack’s immediate attraction to Callie is tempered by her willingness to place herself in a danger, a danger she believes comes from only one direction. The $ex scenes are intimate and erotic without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text. –Both Jack and Callie like it rough in the bedroom.

We are quickly introduced to the team at 11th Hour Security: Team leader Isiah Graham, Faith Beasley, Sabrina Leighton, former Navy SEAL Kellan Blake, and the money behind 11th Hour – the mysterious Mr. Night.

RAW POWER is an intense story line; a sexy, intriguing and spirited story of romantic suspense. The premise is edgy; the characters are sassy and energetic; the romance is provocative and dramatic.

Guardian’s Bond by Rhenna Morgan – a Review

Description:
For decades, he’s been alone.
Now, she’s here. His fated mate.
His to win. To protect.
To provide for and pleasure.

Priest Rahandras has lived with the darkness trapped inside himself for years. Betrayed by his own brother and forced to watch his clan’s brutal annihilation, the only thing Priest wants more than to escape the curse that haunts him—as both man and beast—is to rebuild.

Until the mate he’s longed for walks into his life with an elder from his past. She’s everything he’s wished for, and the key to the clan’s very survival.

Kateri Falsen is a woman of logic and facts. While Priest’s cat can sense her arousal, telling her they’re fated won’t be enough. He’ll have to show her his love: with his words, with his actions, and with his body.

Protecting Kateri from the evil trapped inside him is paramount. But when lost clan members are systematically murdered, he’ll have to choose between exposing his mate to his black magic, or risking her as the next victim.

Review:

Guardian’s Bond by Rhenna Morgan is the 1st book in her new Ancient Ink paranormal romance series. Since I love Rhenna Morgan’s stories, I looked forward to reading this new series.  Guardian’s Bond turned out to be an exciting, intense, and sexy start.

Priest is a panther shifter, and the leader of his clan.  He is the High Priest who goes to the otherworld to help new members meet the Keeper, and as they go through their soul quest (find their companion and shift).  Priest has lived much of his life in darkness, having lost his family to his evil brother, whom he thought was dead; but despite the darkness for him and his cat, Priest is still a good guy, who takes care of his pack.  When he has just about given up on finding a mate, he meets a powerful young girl, who has no idea about what she truly is.

Kateri (Katy) arrives at Priest’s tattoo parlor, with her brother Alek and Naomi (Nana), and both her and her brother will learn everything there is to know.  They have both been sheltered from their mother and father, who never told them about their heritage.  When she meets Priest, Katy can feel the bond between her and Priest, but her fears of the unknown will make her difficult to deal with, and distrustful of Priest.  But the pull of the mating bond will in time change everything, and she will slowly open herself to Priest.

Priest first has to train both ALek and Katy how to fight and be ready for their soul quest. Kateri wants to know everything, as she has always been about learning, knowing the facts and finding the reality of what she thought was just fairytales.

What follows is an exciting adventure that will bring them all in danger, especially when the evil brother returns to try to control the pack and kill Priest.  What I loved was seeing Katy get through her soul quest, and find a companion that is equal to Priest’s Black Panther; her new found powers will also be instrumental in saving them against such powerful evil.

The romance between Priest and Katy was very steamy,  with some very graphic sex scenes.  Morgan has created a great group of secondary characters, such as Tate, Jade, Alek, Naomi, whom I hope we will get future books on.  I do not want to give spoilers, but I will say that  Guardian’s Bond was an exciting, fun and sexy story that was very well written by Rhenna Morgan.  If you love Paranormal romance, scorching couple, great secondary characters and excellent story line, I suggest you start this series.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date March 13, 2018

Skillful hands. A talented tongue.
Meet Mr. May.

Fate’s been messing with veteran Tyree Johnson. It took his buddies in combat and his wife in a fatal car accident. But he’ll be damned if he’ll let Fate take his beloved bar, The Fix on Sixth.

For years, he’s avoided being Fate’s whipping boy through sheer force of will, and now every bit of his focus is centered on saving his business. Until, that is, the first woman who ever touched his heart walks back into his life—along with a daughter he never knew.

After years of loneliness, Tyree’s not prepared for the way Eva’s sensual curves and sharp wit still capture his heart and rekindle his senses. All he knows is that for the first time in forever, he’s found a passion other than his bar. But one final twist arrives when Fate pits the bar he can’t bear to lose against the woman who’s stolen his heart.

He’s a master at red-hot ecstasy.

Who’s Your Man of the Month?

When a group of fiercely determined friends realize their beloved hang-out is in danger of closing, they take matters into their own hands to bring back customers lost to a competing bar. Fighting fire with a heat of their own, they double down with the broad shoulders, six-pack abs, and bare chests of dozens of hot, local guys who they cajole, prod, and coerce into auditioning for a Man of the Month calendar.

But it’s not just the fate of the bar that’s at stake. Because as things heat up, each of the men meets his match in this sexy, flirty, and compelling binge-read romance series of twelve novels releasing every other week from New York Times bestselling author J. Kenner.

•••••••••••••

REVIEW: GET IT ON is the fifth instalment in J. Kenner’s contemporary, adult MAN OF THE MONTH erotic, romance novella series focusing on a fund raiser for the popular Austin, Texas bar known as The Fix. This is bar owner and widower Tyree Johnson, and photographer Eva Anderson’s story line. GET IT ON can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary, although I recommend reading the series in order for backstory and cohesion.

SOME BACKGROUND: The Fix on Sixth, a local Austin hangout and bar, is in desperate need of renovations and a quick influx of cash so a plan is put into motion, by a group of regulars, a plan that includes a Man of the Month calendar competition, and a reality show aimed at rehabbing the bar.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Eva and Tyree) GET IT ON follows the rebuilding relationship between bar owner Tyree Johnson, and Eva Anderson. Approximately twenty four years earlier Eva and Tyree fell in love with one another but duty called, and Tyree headed to war. Shortly thereafter, Eva learned that she was pregnant and her father let her believe that Tyree had died. Fast forward to present day wherein Elena Anderson will come looking for her father- a man she never knew existed-but the man her mother has never stopped loving. What ensues is the rekindling romance between Tyree and Eva as Elena puts into motion a plan to push her parents together, and the fall-out as Tyree is unable to let go of the past, and struggles with the guilt and death of the wife he still loves.

Eva Anderson had no idea that Tyree Johnson was still alive. Her father, a trusted military contractor, led our heroine to believe that the man that she loved had died in combat. Pregnant and alone, Eva married a man she did not love only to find herself divorced five years later. Tyree Johnson was devastated upon his return from war to find the woman he loved happily married with a daughter. Angry and grieving Tyree would quickly meet Teiko, a young waitress, who would heal his heart and give him a son.

The relationship between Eva and Tyree is one of second chances; a rekindling romance that struggles with Tyree’s guilt about the death of his beloved wife, a death he has yet to reconcile affecting his future with the woman from his past. The $ex scenes are limited as Tyree battles between his head and his heart.

GET IT ON is a bit of a departure from the previous instalments in that the romance struggles (in many aspects) with our hero’s inability to move forward. Teiko’s ghost is a constant presence in their rekindling relationship; Tyree believes to fall in love with Eva will dishonor the memories of the wife he still loves. The premise is sweet and touching; the romance struggles with ghosts from the past; the characters are real and honest.

PHOENIX BURNING (A Veranda Cruz Mystery #2) by Isabella Maldonado-a review and guest post

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date March 8, 2018

The battle between Veranda Cruz and the Villalobos cartel turns Phoenix into a war zone.

Homicide Detective Veranda Cruz will stop at nothing to take down the Villalobos cartel. But when a wave of violence in the city escalates, she fears that the secrets of her past will take her down instead.

To prove that he’s ready to run his family’s sprawling criminal empire, he devises a plan to silence his siblings and destroy Veranda, leaving a trail of destruction through downtown Phoenix that makes national headlines. Veranda believes the task force she’s been assigned to lead will end the cartel’s reign of terror, until Adolfo’s revenge takes a cruel–and highly personal–twist.

••••••••••

REVIEW:  PHOENIX BURNING is the second instalment in Isabella Maldonado’s contemporary, adult VERANDA CRUZ MYSTERY crime thriller series focusing on Phoenix homicide detective Veranda Cruz. PHOENIX BURNING can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty but I recommend reading the series in order as there is a continuing premise throughout.

Told from several third person points of view including Veranda Cruz, PHOENIX BURNING follows Phoenix homicide detective Veranda Cruz as she and her fellow police detectives continue to struggle in the wake of a notorious Mexican Cartel headed by Hector Villalobos and his adult children (Adolfo, Bartolo, Carlos & Daria) whose illegal activities including arms dealing, drugs and human trafficking are wreaking havoc in the Phoenix area.

In the first instalment BLOOD’S ECHO Veranda’s fifteen year old sister Gabriela was kidnapped by the Villalobos family, and her mother’s restaurant burned to the ground in a violent act of retribution and revenge against our story line heroine. Fast forward six weeks, and Veranda is named to a special task force alongside the Phoenix Police Department Homicide Squad and Gang Unit, the FBI, DEA, US Marshal, Homeland Security and the Mexican Federal Police as they put a plan into motion to take down the Villalobos Cartel. What ensues is a series of set backs, and threats aimed at our story line heroine as Hector Villalobos tries establish his power and authority against everyone involved.

PHOENIX BURNING contains some scenes of violence that focus on the brutality of the Mexican cartels; their cruelty and destructiveness as it pertains to human life, and their single-minded ruthlessness of domination and control. The Phoenix Police are outsmarted; our heroine’s family and the people of Phoenix are blindsided; the Villalobos family structure and dynamic will continue to change.

Author Isabella Maldonado, a retired police captain, and graduate of the FBI National Academy, draws on her experiences and real life in her endeavor to create a fictionalized world of corruption, crime and violence in Phoenix, Arizona. PHOENIX BURNING is an intriguing thrill ride; a gripping and realistic tale of choices and tragic consequences; of retaliation and retribution; entitlement, family, dominion and power.

TOEING THE THIN BLUE LINE by Isabella Maldonado

Police officers are afforded a lot of discretion in how they perform their duties. This is both necessary, and a potential pitfall. After more than twenty years on the force, I’ve made my share of judgment calls during rapidly evolving situations. When I became a police captain later in my career, I had to hold others accountable for their decisions. It’s not something most cops like to discuss, but it’s a very real part of the job. There are times when you’re put in the position of knowing a guilty person has escaped justice based on a technicality. You must let them go. We used to have a saying on the force: “The world is round.” It means that the person who gets away with a crime today will doubtless come full circle and end up getting caught for something else tomorrow. Kind of “bad guy karma.”

In fiction, whether on the screen or in print, heroes are sometimes portrayed as vigilantes who ensure justice is served. This is one of the reasons why fiction can be so much more satisfying than real life, where sometimes evil seems to prevail. This begs the question: Should good guys do bad things in the name of fighting crime? We know what Machiavelli would say, but then again, he didn’t swear an oath to serve and protect. In real life, the answer is not just no, but hell no.

Having sat on both sides of the commander’s desk, I could deeply sympathize with an officer who colored outside the lines in an honest effort to lock up a criminal. But I couldn’t allow it. I disciplined those officers when they violated policy or procedure. During the review process, I always explained to the officer that the police are held to a higher standard. The fact that we are empowered to take away people’s freedom – and yes, sometimes their very lives – means that we cannot ever allow ourselves to cut corners or skip ahead, even if that means getting to the end point more quickly. My officers knew me to be firm, but fair.

In fiction, however, it’s just so much more fun to make sure evil gets its comeuppance. Preferably in a spectacular and wholly satisfying way. If that requires our hero to bend or break a few pesky rules, then so be it. I write a police procedural series featuring the Phoenix Police Department. My protagonist, Detective Veranda Cruz, strays from the line, but she ends up paying the price for doing so. It’s important to me to show the repercussions cops face when they use deadly force, whether subsequently deemed justifiable or not. Aside from those kind of judgment calls, officers routinely make many other decisions when they investigate cases that can have long-reaching ramifications for suspects, victims, and the entire community. Using my background, I try to portray as accurately as I can what happens to police who do the wrong things for the right reasons, but not to the point of bogging down the story with endless Internal Affairs interviews. Fast-paced stories need to keep their momentum, after all. Hopefully, readers enjoy an engaging story that keeps them on the edge of their seat. If my characters sometimes resort to extreme measures to get the job done, there will be a price to pay. But, after all, that’s what makes them the good guys!

Isabella Maldonado is a published author, a retired police captain, and a regular contributor on television News Channel 12 (Phoenix NBC affiliate) as a law enforcement expert. Her last police position was Commander of Special Investigations and Forensics. During her long career, she served as a hostage negotiator, department spokesperson, and precinct commander among many assignments. She was recognized with a Meritorious Service Award and a Lifesaving Award, and was selected to attend executive management training at the FBI National Academy in Quantico. Maldonado is a past president of the Phoenix Metro chapter of Sisters In Crime, and currently sits on the board. She lives in Mesa, Arizona, where she is currently writing the third book in the Veranda Cruz series, which features a Latina Phoenix police detective.

Let Me Lie by Clare MackIntosh – a Review

Let Me Lie by Clare MacKintosh – a Review

Amazon / B&N / Kobo / BAM / Book Depository

Description:
The police say it was suicide.
Anna says it was murder.
They’re both wrong.

One year ago, Caroline Johnson chose to end her life brutally: a shocking suicide planned to match that of her husband just months before. Their daughter, Anna, has struggled to come to terms with their loss ever since.

Now with a young baby of her own, Anna misses her mother more than ever and starts to question her parents’ deaths. But by digging up their past, she’ll put her future in danger. Sometimes it’s safer to let things lie…

Review:

Let Me Lie by Clare Mackintosh is a standalone thriller, which the author has become known for after her successful debut with I Let You Go.

Let Me Lie revolves around Anna Johnson, who lives with her partner, Mark and their baby, Ella.  Anna is still grieving over the death by suicide of her mother, which was a year ago. Her father also killed himself around 7 months prior to her mother’s death.  Anna just can’t get past the fact that both of her parents died the same way.  On the day of the anniversary of her mother’s death, she receives an anonymous note questioning that their deaths were suicide, which convinces Anna that both of them were murdered.

She goes to the police with the note, and a retired cop, who works at the police desk takes the note and says he will look into it.  Besides Anna, we also get the Pov of the cop, Murray, who upon researching the case, begins to believe she is right, that her parents were murdered.  Murray was a good cop, and we also get to see him with his wife, who fights off mental illness.  On her good days, she helps discuss the case with him, and this was a nice element to the story and investigation.

As Anna is determined to find the truth, she will receive a shock that will change the game.   To say too much more would be spoilers, and throughout the book, there are so many twists and surprises that will further change everything.  There are a number of other characters who are part of Anna’s life; Mark, her partner, who wants to marry her; Laura, who is a friend to the family; Billy, her uncle from her father’s side.   Who can Anna trust?

What follows is an exciting and intense story that bordered a bit on the wild side with all those twists and turns. Anna, the main character all the way through, was in the middle of every revelation, that by the end, her own life was very much in danger.  At the same time, the story took a bit of an unrealistic feel, though it was very much a thriller.

Let Me Lie was a dark thriller, lots of excitement, action  and game changers that made you constantly guess wrong, especially since for the most part, the other characters could not really be trusted.  If you love psychological thrillers, you can never go wrong reading Clare Mackintosh, though I will say I loved the first two books better.

Emma Roberts is Dom’s next door neighbor. And she is pining for the one that got away! A one Dr. Stephen Greenwald. But she can’t seem to get him to ask her out. She has set a deadline. If he hasn’t asked her out within four months she is moving on. But time was running out! That’s when her friend Macy tells her she needs a fake boyfriend to make Stephen jealous she sets about finding one.

When Emma gets home that day she realizes there is a car in Dom’s driveway but he is supposed to be deployed. Investigating what is going on she meets Vince. Vince has his hands full taking care of his brother, who won’t take his pain medicine. So Emma blackmails Don into taking his meds. But the backfire is she has to use Vince as the fake date to get Stephen jealous!

What ensues is a sweet, slow friendship that boils over into a hot, dripping steam bath. The chemistry between Vince and Emma is amazing. And Emma is hilarious. This book had me laughing out loud!

I have fallen in love with all the men of At-Ease Ranch. If you enjoy a good hit romance this series is the perfect one!
