Description:
Follows two fiercely independent young women, centuries apart, who hold the power to save their world…or doom it.

When assassins ambush her best friend, the crown prince, Rielle Dardenne risks everything to save him, exposing her ability to perform all seven kinds of elemental magic. The only people who should possess this extraordinary power are a pair of prophesied queens: a queen of light and salvation and a queen of blood and destruction. To prove she is the Sun Queen, Rielle must endure seven trials to test her magic. If she fails, she will be executed…unless the trials kill her first.

A thousand years later, the legend of Queen Rielle is a mere fairy tale to bounty hunter Eliana Ferracora. When the Undying Empire conquered her kingdom, she embraced violence to keep her family alive. Now, she believes herself untouchable–until her mother vanishes without a trace, along with countless other women in their city. To find her, Eliana joins a rebel captain on a dangerous mission and discovers that the evil at the heart of the empire is more terrible than she ever imagined.

As Rielle and Eliana fight in a cosmic war that spans millennia, their stories intersect, and the shocking connections between them ultimately determine the fate of their world–and of each other.

Review:

Furyborn by Claire Legrand is the first book in her new Empirium YA fantasy series. Furyborn starts off with a bang, as we meet the feared Blood Queen Rielle, who has just given birth to a baby girl.  Knowing that evil wants her baby, Rielle gives her child to a young boy to take her away and protect her; feeling the  anger of the evil being coming, Rielle takes her own life.  What a way to start and grab our attention.  Furyborn follows two women, one in the past and one a thousand years later, with both women being extremely powerful and destined to either destroy or save the world.

One Pov is Reille Dardenne (before she became the Blood Queen), as we learn about her and her two best friends, Audric and Ludivine.  Rielle has always had secret powers that her father and trainer would teach her how to control everything.  When she comes across Audric being attacked, Rielle comes to his rescue using her hidden powers, which will change her life forever.

The Prophecy claims that sometime in the future the evil angels locked away for centuries will return and wreck havoc across the world, and two women will rise; one made of Blood and the other of light. “a queen of light and salvation and a queen of blood and destruction’.  The King and his court are disturbed by the revelation of Rielle’s powers, with some threatening to have her killed.  She is forced to prove that she is indeed the Sun Queen and loyal to the kingdom by undergoing seven trials of different elemental magic, of which she must complete every one, or be executed.

Eliana Ferracora is a bounty hunter (1000 plus years after the death of Rielle), also known as the Dread of Ornline.  Eliana has been trained by her mother to be an assassin and bury her feelings within, and do what is expected of her as a bounty hunter for her kingdom .  Eliana protects her family, as she needs the money to take care of Remy ,her brother and her mother to survive, and forces herself not to let what she does consume her.  When her mother disappears, Eliana is desperate and agrees to help Simon, one of the leaders of the rebellion, in order to find her mother.  Eliana is an amazing fierce and tough heroine, though her stubbornness was annoying at times.  Eliana has the ability since she was a child to self heal, but had no idea why.  Though there is no romance between them, there is a bond that will develop between Simon and Eliana and she will learn the truth about whom and what she is.

What follows is an intense exciting dark and intriguing story switching between two time periods separated by over a 1000 years.  Rielle will fight with help from her friends, Audric and Ludivine to survive her violent trials, as well as from the angel who helps and makes her even more powerful.  Corien, the angel is truly the villain in both time periods.  It was amazing to see Rielle fight and rise above the terrible challenges for each elemental magic.

Eliana will become part of the rebellion in order to survive, protect Remy and find her mother; she will also come to understand the role she will eventually have to play. In a desperate attempt to save Simon and the rebels, she will learn more about her inner powers.

Claire Legrand does a masterful job creating the two main characters, as well as many of these fascinating characters (Simon, Remy, Audric, Ludivine, Navi, etc).  The storyline between the two women flows seamlessly and keeps our interest throughout this complex world.

These two women are fierce, strong, with flaws and weaknesses, and both very different, but their spirit is enduring.   Two storylines a thousand years apart, that weave together flawlessly that surprised me how well Legrand wrote this.   There are some surprises along the way, and though we know what happens to Rielle in her time, the book leaves off with Eliana stepping up into the role she was destined to be.  Furyborn was very well written by Claire Legrand, and has us impatiently waiting to see if the Sun Queen will rise and save them all.

Ian Bradley is the definition of a Wall Street hotshot: seven-figure salary, designer suits, and a corner office. His drive off the floor is just as potent. Every woman who knows him has felt the rush. But now he’s met his match in Lara McKenzie—a woman with the power to bring Ian to his knees.

An ambitious, whip-smart daughter of FBI agents, Lara is a rising star in fighting white-collar crime. Her latest case—the investigation of Ian Bradley for insider trading—could make her career. She knows a scoundrel when she sees one. Ian fits the bill: a cocky, ridiculously handsome bad boy with a slick swagger.

She’ll do anything to prove he’s guilty. He’ll do anything to prove he’s not. But it’s only a matter of time before their fierce battle of wits gets oh so hot and personal. Now, taking down Ian has become more than business for Lara. It’s become a pleasure—and there’s more at risk than she ever dreamed.

•••••••••••

REVIEW: HOT ASSET is the first instalment in Lauren Layne’s contemporary, adult 21 WALL STREET romance series. This is thirty-two year old Wall Street investor Ian Bradley, and twenty-eight year old SEC agent Lara McKenzie’s story line.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Lara and Ian) HOT ASSET follows the building but forbidden relationship between Wall Street investor Ian Bradley, and SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission) agent Lara McKenzie. An anonymous tip to the SEC found our hero, Ian Bradley, being investigated for insider trading. Enter SEC agent Lara McKenzie, and the woman with whom Ian would fall in love. What ensues is the building but forbidden relationship between Ian and Lara, and the potential fall-out as Lara’s findings are ignored by the people in charge.

Ian Bradley grew up in the foster care system, and has worked for every penny and dollar he has earned. A womanizer by reputation, Ian struggles in his attempts to seduce the stoic SEC agent, but something about Lara gives him pause. Behind the librarian glasses, and professional decorum, Lara hides a goddess that Ian hopes to control. Someone is out to destroy Ian’s life using Lara McKenzie in the process, but Ian isn’t willing to go down without a fight.

The relationship between Lara and Ian begins acrimoniously when Ian discovers the reasons behind our heroine’s visit. Not only is Ian innocent of all of the charges but Lara insists that she must continue to investigate until the very end. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text. There is plenty of back and forth, sexual banter between our leading couple, banter that crosses the line as Ian tries desperately to seduce the woman looking into his life.

There is a wonderful cast of secondary and supporting characters who are a little bit protective of our story line hero. We are introduced to his best friends and fellow investors twenty-eight year old Matt Cannon, and thirty two year old Kennedy Dawson; attorney Vanessa Lewis, fixer and PR Rep Sabrina Cross,PA Kate Henley; Lara’s boss Steve Ennis, and his brother in law Jacob Houghton. Matt and Sabrina’s story line is next in Hard Sell.

The world building looks at the close friendships between Ian, Kennedy and Matt, and their PA Kate Henley; Ian’s backstory and his struggles growing up in the foster care system; as well as Lara’s fight to prove she is worthy of working for the FBI.

HOT ASSET is a spirited and edgy story line. The premise is imaginative and engaging; the characters are colorful, energetic and charismatic; the romance is captivating and sensual. Lauren Layne’s HOT ASSET is a wonderful and sexy start to her 21 Wall Street series.

Marek ( Cold Fury Hockey #11) by Sawyer Bennett-Review Tour

Marek (Cold fury Hockey #11) by Sawyer Bennett-Review Tour

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / B&N / KOBO / Chapters Indigo / Google Play / ibooks

When the Carolina Cold Fury’s hottest young star gets blindsided by an ex with a scandalous secret, it’s game on.

Marek Fabritis is used to delivering blows, not receiving them. But when he gets tipped off by an anonymous email about his ex-girlfriend, the news leaves him ice cold—and it’s not because Gracen Moore is getting married to a total jerk. It’s the fact that Marek has a three-year-old daughter he never knew about. Now he’s going back home, not to play knight in shining armor but to make damn sure that no man takes what’s his. For the first time, there might be something more important than hockey.

Gracen Moore has always loved Marek. That’s why she let him go, so he could pursue a career in the NHL. And that’s why she never told him about Lilly. Only now does Gracen realize that she made an unforgivable mistake. But is that any reason for Marek to crash her wedding and make an epic scene? If the spark that still smolders between them is to be trusted, maybe. Still, Gracen’s not getting her hopes up. Because she knows better than anyone that appearances aren’t always what they seem.

•••••••••

REVIEW: MAREK is the eleventh instalment in Sawyer Bennett’s contemporary, adult COLD FURY HOCKEY erotic, hockey romance series focusing on the members of the Carolina Cold Fury Hockey team. This is hockey player Marek Fabritis, and nurse Gracen Moore’s story line. MAREK can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Marek and Gracen) MAREK is a second chance romance between Carolina Cold Fury player Marek Fabritis, and nurse Gracen Moore. Four years earlier, as he was about to embark on a professional career in the NHL, Marek Fabritis walked away from the woman he loved destroying her heart in the process. Fast forward to present day wherein Marek will receive an anonymous email that his ex-girlfriend had birthed him a daughter, and was in the process of marrying a man she did not love. All but kidnapping Gracen and the little girl he never knew Marek will effectively tie our heroine’s hands as he comes to terms with the knowledge that Gracen kept secret the birth of their daughter.

From the outset Marek Fabritis’ anger and hatred towards Gracen is despicable and appalling. There is nothing worthy about his actions and immature attitude towards the woman he once loved, a woman he despises for keeping secret her pregnancy and the birth of their child. As the story line progresses, there are small glimpses into a man who is willing to forgive but something will trigger the memory of the secrets and lies thusly setting Marek off on a vicious tirade meant to humiliate and wound. Gracen knows she screwed up four years earlier but the man that she loved (and still loves) all but destroyed the very essence of her heart and her soul. As a single parent Gracen needed to focus on her young daughter but things go from bad to worse when she finds herself, yet again, sacrificing her own happiness for someone she loves.

The relationship between Marek and Gracen is one of second chances; a rekindling romance that struggles in the face of past sins, secrets and lies. Marek’s treatment of Gracen is embarrassing, infuriating and juvenile, and our heroine places the blame all unto herself. The $ex scenes are intimate, erotic and intense but once again, I struggle with the use of a certain four-letter word I believe serves no purpose in a romance story line.

We are introduced to Marek and Gracen’s daughter Lilly-a sweet child who could have been easily used as a pawn in her parent’s war with one another.

MAREK is a well written, fast paced, emotional and heart breaking story line made all the more painful by the hero’s actions and behavior. I had a bit of a struggle with how Gracen easily acquiesced to Marek’s accusations and tirades-for a strong, independent woman she was constantly apologizing for sins of the past. The premise is spirited and dramatic; the characters are infuriating, colorful and passionate; the romance is provocative and edgy.

REVIEW: REBEL HEART is the second instalment in the contemporary adult THE RUSH SERIES erotic, romance duology co-authored by Vi Keeland and Penelope Ward. This is bar owner and businessman Heathcliff ‘Rush’ Rushmore, and romance author/bar hostess Gia Mirabelli’s continuing story. REBEL HEART should NOT be read as a stand alone as it picks up immediately after the events and cliff hanger of book one Rebel Heir

Told from dual first person perspectives (Rush and Gia) REBEL HEART follows the continuing romance between bar owner and businessman Heathcliff ‘Rush’ Rushmore, and romance author/bar hostess Gia Mirabelli. At the end of book one REBEL HEIR Gia discovered her life was about to get a lot more complicated. Having met Rush’s family our heroine struggles with secrets from the past, and going forward alone without the man that she loves. While Rush struggles with the emotional fall-out, Gia must take control in order to protect more than just her heart.

REBEL HEART is a story of one man’s struggle with the past, his family, and the knowledge that he will never be good enough for the father he barely knows. Hoping never to repeat the sins of the past, Rush must come to terms with the truth, a truth that is slowly destroying his relationship with the woman he loves.

Once again, Penelope Ward and Vi Keeland pull the reader into an emotional, heart breaking and revealing story line about family, friendship, betrayal and love. The premise is dramatic and intense; the romance is erotic and provocative; the characters are coloful, energetic, charismatic and edgy. REBEL HEART is a roller coaster of emotion; of passionate hearts, and heartbreaking grief.

Description:
Finley Cartwright is the queen of lost causes. That’s why she’s standing on a barstool trying to convince Friday night drinkers to donate money to a failing charity. Hitting on the guy on the next stool wasn’t part of her plan. Still, hot but grumpy venture capitalist Caleb Sherwood might just be her ticket to success. Professional grifter and modern-day Robin Hood, Cal Sherwood is looking for a partner for a long con. Sexy Fin, doing her best Marilyn Monroe act for her cause, has the necessary qualifications. By the time he cuts her free, her charity would be thriving, and she’d have helped him charm billions out of arrogant, gullible marks to fund his social justice causes. But just when he thinks he’s about to pull off the best con ever, his feisty new partner gets the upper hand.

Review:

So …..

One Night Wife by Ainsley Paton starts with the usual …. hot hero meets ok looking girl, and I thought I was in for the usual read. But once you get in …  The book veers off and takes you for a great read. The book deals with the real issues, and for me it made a better read.

Who is actually conning who ?   When you life has been a big con, would you actually recognise genuine feelings, and would you know if the person feels the same as you, or was it all fake ?

Caleb (Cal) robs from the rich to give not quite to the poor (but to organizations that are trying to save the world) his plans are precise and he knows what and who to target, but all that gets blown out of the water when he meets Finley.

Raising money for charity shouldn’t be this hard, but Fin is a quitter, she doesn’t do things for long, but she refuses to give on this one thing.  When their feelings for each other get in the way, is it time to give up on the con or can Cal and Fin have their happy ending ?

One Night Wife is part of her Confidence Game series. This is a book that will grab your attention simply because of it’s lovable characters, and the fact it’s well written.  It’s a quick read for a summer afternoon.

Loving her is the biggest fight of his life…

Home from the Marines, Noah Cortez has a secret he doesn’t want his oldest friend, Kristina Moore, to know. It kills him to push her away, especially when he’s noticing just how sexy and confident she’s become in his absence. But, angry and full of fight, he’s not the same man anymore either. Which is why Warrior Fight Club sounds so good.

Kristina loves teaching, but she wants more out of life. She wants Noah—the boy she’s crushed on and waited for. Except Noah is all man now—in ways both oh so good and troubling, too. Still, she wants who he’s become—every war-hardened inch. And when they finally stop fighting their attraction, it’s everything Kristina never dared hope for.

But Noah is secretly spiraling, and when he lashes out, it threatens what he and Kristina have found. The brotherhood of the fight club helps him confront his demons, but only Noah can convince the woman he loves that he’s finally ready to fight for everything.

•••••••••••

REVIEW:  FIGHTING FOR EVERYTHING is the first instalment in Laura Kaye’s contemporary, adult WARRIOR FIGHT CLUB military hero, MMA, erotic romance series. This is twenty-seven year old wounded Marine Noah Cortez, and twenty-five year old primary school teacher Kristina Moore’s story line

Told from dual third person perspectives (Kristina and Noah) FIGHTING FOR EVERTHING follows the friends to lovers romance between wounded Marine Noah Cortez, and primary school teacher Kristina Moore. Noah’s return from active duty came with too many scars both physical and emotional: from PTSD, TBI, and the added benefits of damage to his hearing and his sight, seven months home and Noah continues to struggle with every day life. Keeping his best friend Kristina Moore at a distance, Noah battles between his head and his heart as his attraction to Kristina is hampered by the negative thoughts and inner turmoil of the man he is no longer. What ensues is the building relationship between Noah and Kristina, and the fall-out as Noah continues to push away the woman that he loves.

Noah Cortez fights an ongoing battle with PTSD and traumatic brain injury. Needing an outlet, Noah will be invited to the local Warrior Fight Club (WFC) where he will learn to channel his aggression and need to destroy. Kristina Moore has loved Noah Cortez for most of her life but Noah has changed and Kristina is often the target of both his desires and his pain.

The relationship between Kristina and Noah is a friends to lovers romance that is quick to build once they rekindle their friendship following Noah’s return home. Noah believes he is no good for the woman he loves and Kristina knows that the man that she loves is fighting a battle within. The sex scenes are intimate and seductive without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

We are introduced to Noah’s fellow Warrior Flight Club members: PI Billy Parrish, Ranger Moses Griffin, MMA coach John ‘Mack’ McPherson, Leo ‘Hawk’ Hawkins, Tara Hunter, Navy man Sean Riddick, Army nurse Daniela ‘Dani’ England and Colby Richmond; Kristina’s best friend Kate Arnold, Noah’s father Elias Cortez and Noah’s brother Josh.

The world building focuses on the struggles of returning veterans; the need for organized involvement, and the support of family, friends and the people they love.

FIGHTING FOR EVERYTHING is a realistic look at one man’s battle with PTSD and the paralyzing effects of traumatic brain injury. Not only does our hero struggle with the mind numbing pain and emotional fall-out but the physical scars and permanent injuries add another dimension to an already fragile return home. The premise is heartbreaking, sensitive and profound; the characters are energetic, flawed and inspiring; the romance is dramatic and intense. Laura Kaye’s impassioned heroes are edgy, strong and determined.

“All done,” Noah said. He gently applied tape to hold the bandage in place, but with the way the back of her hand was swelling, there wasn’t any safe place to press. Sonofabitch. He couldn’t believe this had happened to her. And on his watch.

“You’re taking really good care of me, Noah. Thank you,” Kristina said with a small smile.

“I will always take care of you,” he bit out. And then he realized what he said, and just how vehemently he’d said it. And damn if it hadn’t sounded a whole lot more than friendly. He chanced a glance at Kristina, and it was clear that she’d registered something in his tone, too. He threw away the trash and sat against the edge of the desk. “Why don’t you sit with the ice for a few minutes?”

She rose and stood right in front of him, her pretty eyes even with his given how he was leaning. “I don’t need to sit,” she said in a low voice, her gaze boring into his.

“Well, I need you to sit. So sit.”

Her eyebrow went up. Just the one.

Under other circumstances it might’ve made him laugh. Could she ever just fucking listen to him? But he was wound so tight over witnessing her getting hurt, over the idea that it could’ve been so much worse, over seeing her spilled blood, that it was all he could do not to redecorate Mr. Johnson’s office along the lines of his shower wall. He was nearly vibrating with pent-up frustration.

And now Kristina was boxing him in, observing him too closely, not giving him an out.

“Here’s the part where I’m gonna say ‘thank you,’ and you’re going to say ‘you’re welcome.’ Ready? Thank you for protecting me and taking care of me, Noah.” Her expression was expectant, and not a little amused.

Something about her playfulness wound him a notch tighter. Because he wasn’t playing. His gaze dropped from her eyes to her full pink lips, and desire sucker-punched him so hard he nearly gasped. “Does your mouth hurt?” he rasped.

“Why would my—”

Noah was on her in a flash. Hand cupping the side of her face, arm hauling her tight up against him, mouth claiming hers on a deep, needful, soul-healing kiss. Kristina’s muscles braced in surprise, but then she melted against him, going soft and pliant against all his hardness. And he was hard. So hard, so on edge, so in need of release, that he could’ve spun her around, lifted her onto the desk, and buried himself deep right here and right now.

He needed to be more gentle with her, but the need roaring through him wouldn’t allow him to slow down or back off. And her eager responsiveness didn’t help, either.

Her good hand fisted in his hair, her mouth sucked maddeningly at his tongue, and her body writhed against his erection. And goddamn the noises she was making, because the desperate moans and little mewls of need were hot as fuck, every one stroking his cock and making him harder.

Instinct told Noah that Kristina wouldn’t hinder him playing out his little fantasy on the desk.

Except she was hurt. And they were in a fucking sub shop. Annnd, he couldn’t forget about what was behind door number three—they were supposed to be Just. Friends.

“Shit,” he rasped. “I did it again.”

She grasped at his face. “Yes, thank you for that, too. Keep doing it.” Kristina went in for another kiss. This time, her tongue penetrated him, like she wanted to fight him for control. And hell if that didn’t set off all kinds of heat inside him.

He flipped them around and pinned her to the desk, nearly leaning her backwards over it. The position brought his hard-on flush with that sweet, hot spot between her legs. She cried out and tried to grind against him, but his weight and her skirt kept her pinned tight.

Hurt. Sub shop. Friends.

“Shit, wait.” He stepped back, putting space between them. Because he didn’t think he’d have the strength to resist a third time. Especially when she stared at him with such abject fucking need, her cheeks flush with desire, her hair mussed from his hands, her luscious breasts heaving under that clingy V-neck top. “You’re hurt.”

“And?” Kristina asked.

Noah glared. “Kristina, I’m kinda on the edge here, if you can’t tell.”

She slipped up onto the desk and spread her legs, just the little bit the skirt allowed.

Review:

MIKE is book one of the new series The Firefighters of Station #8 by Samanthya Wyatt.

This is the story of Mike and Cassie. They meet in a restaurant after the firefighters have a training exercise that goes very wrong. Cassie and her friend Tammy are at the restaurant after a full day teaching at the local elementary school.

The attraction is immediate, but both main characters have reasons to avoid relationships. Author Wyatt weaves a story where they quickly get together and the sparks do fly. This story has many steamy love scenes as the story builds.

Someone is targeting the firefighters and the adventure builds as does the personal stories. You learn a bit about a few of the firefighters as the action also builds.

I don’t do spoilers, it’s better to read it for yourself. This is a good start to an interesting new series. Be sure to grab a copy and get ready for a hot ride.

Lady Honor does not believe in marriage. Her father’s death broke her mother’s spirit and took her from her daughters emotionally well before her own death. When Honor is attacked in the forest, she keeps the event to herself, lest her lairds search for the man and strike him down. As a healer, she’ll do anything it takes not to cause harm. Rumors of attacks in the Highlands forces the lairds to increase guards and security measures. When Bryce Calder is assigned to protect Lady Honor, she fights the burgeoning attraction for the man, knowing she’ll never risk her heart to love.

Warrior Bryce Calder trusts no woman. Women only strive to better themselves through cunning, as his father warned throughout his childhood. When he is asked to escort Lady Honor while she gathers healing herbs, he is vexed. Training the men and protecting the clan are his duties, not following the sharped-tongued lass about the wood. With each passing day, Bryce becomes enchanted by Lady Honor, despite his father’s words, but his unworthiness halts any proclamation of his desire.

An unlikely partnership develops during the frequent trips to the forest and work in the apothecary. The walls each has erected to protect their hearts and their future crumbles. Until a stranger arrives at the keep. Lady Honor’s secret is threatened to be revealed putting in jeopardy the growing romance between the ardent healer and the reluctant warrior-suitor.

Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary.

Told from several third person perspectives including Honor and Bryce HIGHLAND HONOR follows the building relationship between is Lady Honor MacAlister, and Highland warrior Bryce Calder. Someone is stalking the forests of the Highlands surrounding Wild Thistle Keep, taking aim at the women in horrific acts of assault. As the family healer Honor MacAlister needs access to the large assortment of herbs and plants growing in the forests surrounding their home but she is no longer allowed to leave the Keep unaccompanied. Enter Highland warrior Bryce Calder, assigned as protector and guardian of Honor MacAlister, and the man with whom Honor will fall in love. What ensues is the building romance between Honor and Bryce, as the members of Clan MacAlister continue to hunt for the person responsible for the attacks against the women surrounding Wild Thistle Keep.

The attraction between Honor and Bryce does not go unnoticed by the people at Wild Thistle Keep but Honor struggles with memories of the past: how her mother suffered following the brutal death of their father; as well as her own secret and shame. Bryce’s attraction to Honor is visceral but his duty is first and foremost as a warrior, and protector of the woman with whom he will fall in love.

All of the previous story line couples play secondary and supporting characters including Lady Faith MacAlister, and Captain Graeme Ross (Highland Faith #2), and Lairds Hope MacAlister and her husband Aidan MacKerry, as well as the return of Nora and old man Connor, a former warrior battling wisdom and age.

Like the previous instalments HIGHLAND HONOR is a story of family, of honor, of hope and of faith. The premise is intriguing and captivating; the romance is clean and sweet; the characters are heart warming and inspiring.

Creating Memorable Characters

By: Madelyn Hill

Creating memorable characters is the goal of all writers and we all have our favorites from books we treasure. Mine? I love Kit from The Witch of Blackbird Pond, Jane from Jane Eyre, Ave Marie from Big Stone Gap Series. And of course Harry from Harry Potter, in fact most of the characters from Harry Potter! Well-drawn characters stand the test of time, so the task is arduous.

As I create characters, I do a word sketch of their looks, habits, endearing traits, goals, motivation and conflict. If I am still uncertain about their singular focus as a character, I complete a poem called, I Am. This helps flesh out the true nature of the character. In my opinion, these facets must be known prior to writing. Of course there may be shifts along the way when your muse decides to skew the story in some manner, but having the background information completed can help with characterization consistency.

At the beginning of each novel, I add the character sketches before chapter 1 so I have quick access as I am writing. This is done for main and secondary characters. Then I create inspirations boards in Pinterest so I have a visual and can locate research content using an organized, easy to locate tool.

In the Wild Thistle Trilogy, the characters are driven by their father’s dying words: “Through Hope, Faith, and Honor, ye can rule.” These parting words truly direct the goals of each character as well as their conflict. For Hope of Highland Hope, the statement increases her loyalty to the clan and her need to lead them to the best of her ability. For Faith of Highland Faith, the pledge is conflicting. Faith loves adventure and hunting and doesn’t want to remain at the keep, she wants to explore. Both are strong, fierce women who do not let traditional conventions stand in their way. Lady Honor of Highland Honor, is the peacekeeper between her sisters and the clan healer. Her skill directs her thoughts and actions and while her father’s death inspired her position of healer, she does her duty quietly without the fiery spirit of her sisters. But there is surprising strength in the quiet Honor.

And for the men. Ah, the men who have captured the hearts of these heroines, who are strong, loyal, and determined to forge their way in the clan as well as in the heroines’ hearts. Aidan of Highland Hope is determined to take what is rightfully his—the Lairdship—no matter if it means taking it from the beautiful Hope. Graeme of Highland Faith is conflicted between his love of the sea and his need to prove himself to his father. When he stumbles upon Faith as she hunts, he knows her ransom may be the answer to all of his prayers. He is a rogue, to be sure and finds Faith’s strength of character to be one of her best characteristics. And Bryce of Highland Honor, he is a warrior who pledges to protect the clan and clansmen at all cost. He trains the men hard and doesn’t understand why Honor refuses to see the value of his position and skill within the clan.

As a writer, creating memorable characters is a tough, but paramount. What may captivate one reader may annoy another. I feel consistency of characterization is key to ensure your characters are true to their goals, motivation, and conflict. Strong characterization and a compelling plot will create a story which may land your characters on someone’s favorite character list.

Madelyn HillI’m a mom, wife, and writer just living life to the fullest. A Michigan native, I’ve moved from one Rochester to another Rochester to marry the love of my life. Life is exciting, exhausting, chaotic and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

I love writing historical novels with a Celtic flair. Scotland and Ireland are my favorite locations to set my novels. Nothing is better than a hero in a kilt and a strong heroine to give him the run for his money!
