ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date June 5,2018

Blaire has never quite gotten over Jessie Beckett, the ex–NFL star whose kisses were hot enough to ignite the entire Eastern Seaboard. When he chose work over her, Blaire was left broken hearted. Why else would she have married a skeezy two-timer, just to divorce him less than a year later?

Now Blaire is getting even by becoming one half of Dirty Exes, a PI firm fully committed to humiliating cheating jerks. If only the new jerk she’s been hired to uncover wasn’t Jessie Beckett himself.

Exposing Jessie isn’t going to be easy, especially when she still daydreams about his sexy smile. Further complicating matters is Colin, Jessie’s best friend. He’s gorgeous, a little bit cunning, and willing to help Blaire get the inside scoop on Jessie—for a price.

Now caught between two men—one totally right and the other totally wrong—Blaire will need to decide just how much she’s willing to risk…and whom she’s willing to risk it for.

••••••••••••••

REVIEW: DIRTY EXES is the first instalment in Rachel Van Dyken’s contemporary, adult LIARS, INC romance series- a spin off from the author’s WINGMEN, Inc series. This is PI Blaire Hunter, former NFL star Jessie Beckett, and wealthy hotel owner Colin Buchanon’s story line. Blaire is the sister of Ian Hunter (The Matchmaker’s Playbook).

Told from three, first person points of view (Blaire, Colin and Jessie) DIRTY EXES follows self-appointed PI Blaire Hunter, along with her business partner Isla, as they are tasked with uncovering cheating husbands and wives. Blaire knows the heartbreak of rejection, and the humiliation of finding your husband in bed with another woman. Commiserating together about their unfortunate choices in life, Blaire and Isla formed ‘Dirty Exes’ in an effort to expose liars and cheats. Their latest assignment brings Blaire face to face with the man who broke her heart years earlier, former NFL star Jessie Becket, whose wife has hired Dirty Exes in an effort to unmask the truth. Enter billionaire hotel owner Colin, Jessie’s best friend and ‘second’, and the man with whom Blaire will fall in love. What ensues is the search for the truth, as Blaire goes undercover to take down the man she has fantasized about for close to fifteen years, as his best friend fantasizes about the woman who has stolen his heart.

DIRTY EXES is a fun, flirty and sexy story line. The one on one, back and forth banter between Blaire and Colin is priceless. From the outset, Colin is a man determined to seduce our story line heroine, and in this, we are unsure as to his intent knowing his best friend Jessie still has feelings for the woman with whom Colin will fall in love. DIRTY EXES is not a love triangle romance, in fact, Blaire keeps her distance from Jessie, as she is tasked with uncovering the truth about the man she once thought she loved. Appearances can be deceiving; Jessie’s wife Vanessa is a piece of work, and her ‘love’ for her husband runs only skin deep.

The relationship between Colin and Blaire begins accidentally. Blaire is a bit of a klutz, and constantly finds herself in embarrassing situations including cowering on the floor, and locking herself in a superstar’s food pantry. Colin’s slow seduction of Blaire is rife with humorous sexual innuendo, fun texting, and the honest truth. The $ex scenes are intimate, seductive and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

The world building follows the start-up and ongoing business between two friends whose lives were destroyed on the same night, years before. Betrayal is ugly; revenge is sweet. The premise is spirited and lively; the characters are colorful, fun, and sweet; the romance is exquisite and captivating. DIRTY EXES is a light hearted, enjoyable and playful story line.

*Excerpt: Dirty Exes by Rachel Van Dyken*

*This was not how I pictured my life going. *

*Not even a little bit. A rat scurried by. I held my breath and closed my
eyes. The smell of sewer burned my nostrils and made me cringe when I
thought about how much money I’d spent on my LuLuLemon yoga pants. Yeah,
these stains weren’t coming out any time soon. I was the adult version of
Dora the Explorer crawling through the sewers of downtown LA like I was
searching for fabled alligators. When I was a little girl I wanted to be a
princess, so like I said, not how I pictured my life. I tried to stop
myself from gagging as something that looked like dirty toilet paper
floated past. I grunted and kept stumbling through the dark tunnel. I
hadn’t been close to my parents. Their deaths left this giant gaping hole
in my heart where I knew something was supposed to fit, but nothing ever
did. My brother poured himself into sports—and I poured myself into this
idyllic little fantasy that I would be the mom I never had. It seemed like
a good idea. Marry well. Be the mom I’d been denied. The mom I’d always
wanted. One who’d make casseroles on Mondays, pot roast on Sundays, have a
white picket fence—that was the dream. Or maybe the dream was just to be
loved. The sound of cars above me had me panicking, one earthquake and I’d
go splat beneath a semi hauling fish. Because that was the type of luck I
had. I checked the text message again and used the flashlight on my phone
to peer up at the ladder leading to the street. Isla: Downtown. Eleven p.m.
Shaggy’s Steakhouse. Alleyway “Bingo,” I whispered and quickly
plugged in
my fiber-optic camera. God bless iPhones and all the little gadgets that
come with them. As quietly as possible, I climbed the ladder and shoved the
camera up through the gritty metal hole. “Come to mama,” I whispered
as my
adrenaline spiked. Isla said she’d lure him out of the restaurant with the
promise of a quickie, and the cheating idiot—the one who really needed to
learn how to shop in his own garage, if you get my meaning—was clearly all
over it. What was it with men who thought that money made up for their
overactive sweat glands and jowls the size of my ass? “God, you’re a
beautiful woman,” lying, cheating bastard crooned in a gravelly voice that
reminded me of those antismoking commercials. My face twisted with disgust
while I recorded. The angle was perfect, and the street lights may as well
have been spotlights on his eager face. “Awww.” My best friend and
business
partner shrugged a shoulder and forced a laugh. She tugged down the front
of her dress, and the cheater took one look at her breasts and made a
choking noise. Apparently he had an overactive salivary gland too.
“You’re
such a nice guy. How are you not married?”“Just haven’t found the right
woman, I suppose.” He toyed with the black material near her shoulder,
flicking it with his swollen and heavily ringed pointer finger. I kept
myself from throwing up. “Is that so?” She leaned in. “How is that even
possible?” “No idea.” He leaned in. Oh, honey, I appreciate the
dedication
but he probably tastes like an ashtray. Don’t do it, don’t do it. I
briefly
contemplated closing my eyes so I wouldn’t have to witness any forthcoming
kiss. Only a best friend would notice the slight grimace Isla made before
backing up and sliding a manila envelope out of her bag and shoving it into
his chest. “What’s this?” He chuckled at the envelope while she made a
gagging noise and wiped her mouth. The guy hadn’t even kissed her, yet her
body was in distress, poor thing. “You got it?” She looked down at the
sewer cover. I moved the fiber-optic cable up and down in an affirmative
motion. She smirked at him. “You’ve just been served. You’re also on
camera, so say hi to your wife and the rest of the Dirty Exes, our live
Facebook group. And while you’re at it, you may as well say goodbye to half
of everything you own according to the prenup you signed three years ago.
But you know what? Half doesn’t seem nearly enough to put up with you.” I
cackled. His phone buzzed.“Better answer that, I’m pretty sure
that’s your
soon-to-be-ex-wife just making sure you’re aware that she saw the live
video.” She smiled triumphantly. “Oh, and nice doing business with
you.”
With great effort, I removed the sewer lid then heaved myself up the rest
of the way. The cover felt like it weighed twenty-five pounds, and I nearly
smashed my fingers in the name of catching another cheater. I’d do it again
in a heartbeat. “You smell.” Isla scrunched up her nose when she waltzed
over to me. “But you’re dedicated, I like it.” “It was the only
way to get
close enough,” I grumbled and made an effort to dust off my damp clothes
even though I knew it was in vain. When she’d texted she’d be meeting the
target, I’d been headed back to my apartment, so I was ill prepared for
sewer sightseeing even though I knew it was a possibility, considering the
location. Can one ever be completely prepared to do something like that?
The answer is no. Just. No. “You bitches!” The Cheater ran toward both of
us—lips curled in disgust, his eyes beady, angry little lasers, hand
raised—like he was seconds away from attacking us with his cell phone.
Instinctively, I reared back and let my fist fly. Knuckles connected with
flesh, and he whimpered and went down like the loser he was. “Blaire!”
Isla
groaned. “You can’t just punch our clients’ husbands.” “I
slipped,” I lied.
“Besides, it was self-defense! He’s twice my size and he made a
threat!”
Isla just shook her head at me.“He charged us! With his phone! That’s not
normal behavior, plus it looked like he intended to use it as a weapon.” I
may have anger issues. “Who are you people?” Cheater was on the ground,
covering his face with his hands. Oh hell, was he crying? I stepped over
his sad, pathetic body and grinned. “The Exes.” Isla looped her arm
through
mine and then dropped our black-and-white calling card on the ground. It
was our final punch to the gut. Not only did it serve to warn our targets
that we were watching … always watching, future clients who randomly found
our cards called us based on curiosity alone. We grew our social media
presence by being selective and only taking high-profile clients. Business
was booming. “Have a good night.” I waved and shoved my phone back in my
pocket. Isla sucked in a breath. “So, pizza?” “Fries,” I countered.
“Pizza.” She narrowed her eyes like she was thinking. “Wine,” we
said in
unison. “Oh, looky here.” She pulled a bottle out of her giant Mary
Poppins
purse and waved it in front of my face like it was totally legal to drink
while walking down the street. “You have glasses in there too?” I
laughed,
poking my head in her giant bag. She was already pulling them out. Of
course.Always prepared, Isla was. “And a screw top.” I pointed.
“Best date
of my life.” “Isn’t it though?” A couple passed us by. As I
watched them
kiss, I ignored the pang in my heart. Just like I ignored the longing that
came with it. Stupid heart.“You’re happy, right?” Isla asked. She
was my
other half. If the other half oozed sexuality and confidence. Most days I
was lucky I even put on mascara and remembered to wash my hair. I was so
focused on retribution, on not focusing on the past, that I was barely
staying sane. I wanted to be that woman, the one who told the world where
to stick it—I just didn’t know how to do it without acknowledging all the
parts of myself that were still broken, still hurting. Because that meant I
had to actually admit it happened, it was real, and I was alone. An
impasse, that’s where I was at. “Of course!” I said loudly,
realizing she
was waiting for my response, and like an idiot I was peering into my wine
cup like it was a Magic 8 Ball that would give me all life’s secrets if I
just stared hard enough. Her eyebrow arched, and I could tell she wasn’t
convinced. I took a deep breath, forced a soft smile, and said it again.
“I’m really, really happy.” I just had to repeat it. And then add in
two
reallys. She gave me a confident nod and wrapped her arm around me.
“Good.”
And that was it. Except it wasn’t. Because a part of me was still thinking
about that couple, about the look in her eyes when he kissed her, and about
the way it felt to be kissed. A really good kiss. One that stunned you into
silence. One that stole your breath and made you swear that if you died in
that minute, it would be okay. A kiss that made you believe that maybe,
just maybe, the world wasn’t all bad. That maybe love existed. It was that
kind of kiss. And I realized in that moment, with a jarring sense of
insecurity, that I’d only ever been kissed like that once in my entire
life. And it wasn’t my ex-husband who had done it.*

Description:
National Guardsman Aiden King has been attracted to Hannah Walters for a while, but he never made a move because of her close relationship with his best friend. But when circumstances change, Aiden is surprised when his friend gives his blessing. Problem is, there’s a reason he’s still alone after all these years, and as much as he wants her, that secret keeps him from acting on his desires.

Hannah has finally decided to wait for the kind of love you read about in books and see in movies. After her failed engagement, Aiden’s unassuming support has become a touchstone for Hannah. It soon becomes apparent that he may be exactly the kind of man she’s been looking for. But the closer they become, the more he keeps her at arm’s length.

When Aiden suggests a road trip to take Hannah’s mind off her troubles, the two of them go on a journey neither one expected. She just hopes that the final destination is them together for good.

Review:

Only With You by Nicole McLaughlin is the 4th book in her Man Enough series.  Having read and enjoyed McLaughlin’s other series (Whiskey & Weddings), I thought I would read this book, even if it is the 4th book in the series.   It did read very well as a standalone, but though I did like the book, I found that the lead characters did not compare with what I loved about the other series.

Hannah Walters, our heroine, is the twin sister of the heroine in the previous book.  Hannah has a very outgoing personality, but after having recently broke off her engagement, she doubts she will ever find the kind of love she wants.  To top things off, she is trying to get used to her best friend dating her sister, and that she will not see him as much, even if she is happy for them.  Hannah decides to back off men for a year , and doubts if she will ever find true love.

Aiden King, our hero, is good friends with Jase (Hannah best friend and sisters boyfriend), and he has secretly had a crush on Hannah.  However, Aiden not only has PTSD, but also a mentally disturbing secret from his youth that no one knows.   When staying at Jase’s house over a weekend, Aiden spends time talking with Hannah, who he sees is somewhat down.  A friendship builds, with both texting each other and enjoying their talks.

Hannah will visit Aiden’s bar to try out his great food, and when his grandmother passes away, it will be Hannah who helps him.  Aiden sets out to find his mother who left him as a child, and he will ask Hannah to go with him to visit her.

What follows is a nice storyline, where Aiden will finally meet his mother, and Hannah will begin to fall in love with him.  Though this is a slow build romance, Aiden’s issues are a roadblock that Hannah needs to help him reveal the truths of his past, and why he cannot move forward in a relationship.

Thought they both were good characters, for some reason I couldn’t really connect with them as a couple.  Hannah was overbearing at times, but she tried to help Aiden to let her in; Aiden was a damaged soul, who was unable to open up to her.  They both had their own issues, and I did root them to find a way to work together to get past the stumbling blocks.  Perhaps it just took too long.

Only with You was well written by McLaughlin, and the story line focusing on the issues was done very well.   I suggest you read this book.

•••••••••

REVIEW: TORCHED is the thirteenth full-length instalment in Donna Grant’s contemporary, adult DARK KINGS paranormal/fantasy romance series focusing on the Dragon Kings and the women they love. TORCHED should not be read as a stand alone as this is Ulrik, King of the Silvers’ story line, a story line that has been developing since the first instalment.

SOME BACKGROUND: The DARK KINGS is a spinoff from Donna Grant’s DARK WARRIOR series which in turn is a spin off from Donna’s DARK SWORD series- all set in the Highlands of Scotland. The Dark Fae and their King Taraeth, along with the Ulrik the Silver Dragon King and his uncle Mikkel have declared war on the Dragon Kings by exposing the dragon’s existence to humankind. The last wars between man and the world of the paranormal saw a great loss of life on all sides-but Ulrik wants revenge against King Constantine of the Dragon Kings; Mikkel wants to become King of the Silvers, and the Dark Fae want the Dragon’s hidden weapon in order to rule Scotland and the rest of the world.

Told from several third person perspectives that follow several intersecting paths TORCHED focuses on the King of the Silvers Ulrik as he struggles with his waning need for revenge against the King of Kings versus his duty to protect the dragons he still considers brothers and friends. Thousands of years earlier, Ulrik pledged vengeance against King Constantine for the death of the human woman he once loved- a woman whose betrayal would have meant the death of them all. In the ensuing war between dragon and man, Ulrik killed thousands of humans before Con banished his brother locking his magic and ability to shift. Fast forward to present time wherein Ulrik has worked diligently to reclaim what is rightfully his only to be hindered at every turn by a familiar dragon. With his Uncle Mikkel, working together with a powerful Druid, Ulrik soon turns his vengeance against one of his own. Meanwhile a beautiful woman of immense power, struggles between good and evil, as she searches for the mother she never knew. With Ulrik’s guidance, she will come into her own, as she steps into a war between heirs to the Silver throne.

The turn of events in the impending war between the dragons and the Fae begins to unravel as Con and Queen Usaeil no longer see eye to eye; and Rhi is no longer welcome back to the place she has always called home.

TORCHED is a heartbreaking, detailed and revealing story line where lines are drawn, friendships forged, redemption and forgiveness offered and accepted. One-time friends will become enemies, as long-time relationships crash and burn. The author brings together Death and her Reapers, along with the return of the Druids and Warriors, for some much needed back up, if only to connect all of the back stories, magic and series into one. Donna Grant’s DARK KINGS is a spirited, thrilling and exhilarating series. TORCHED is a dramatic tale of restitution, reclamation, absolution and love.

LOCK ‘N LOAD

Release Date: May 28, 2018
Genre: adult, contemporary, romantic, suspense

Crack CIA analyst Trista Gold is a whiz with the computer, but not so much with people. She hides behind her job, analyzing Top Secret code and making recommendations on national security. She doesn’t need a man in her life. But she will, very soon…

CIA K-9 officer Sgt. Matt Connors suspects that beneath Trista’s uptight appearance, there’s a sexy woman itching to cut loose. But he doesn’t dare act on his attraction. He’s a loner and always will be. Keeping away from Trista is a must-do directive. Until he doesn’t have a choice…

During a routine assignment, Trista stumbles across a cryptic exchange. She doesn’t think much of it…until someone tries to murder her—twice. Both times, Matt had been there to save her. But now she has to hide. And her new bodyguard, Matt, and his K-9 are the only hope she has against the powerful forces that want her dead.

••••••••••••

REVIEW: Lock ‘N’ Load begins with Trista Gold heading to work on a day like any other day. As she is waiting in line to go through the metal detector, a teenager from a tour group bolts and knocks her down. The security guards grab the kid and Sgt. Matt Connors, a CIA K-9 officer, assists Trista, making sure she is uninjured. Trista, of course, has noticed Matt before, but she doesn’t understand why he is always so detached. After all, who would want to talk to a “dowdy” young woman like herself……………

Sgt. Matt Connors has always wondered about Trista Gold and why she attempts to hide beneath very modest clothing. But, that’s all it is for him: wondering. He’s never really had a girlfriend and doesn’t deem himself worthy of a minute’s happiness. His best friend was killed 20 years ago, and it was all Matt’s fault……

As Trista is searching the dark web, using a program she developed that keeps her hidden, she finds who she’s looking for. While spying on the message exchange between her target and an unknown, something happens to cause her “dark curtain” to fail and she’s discovered in the chatroom. Her target exits immediately, leaving Trista wondering what in the world happened. Little did she know that that one blip would change the rest of her life.

Lock ‘N’ Load is a fun, and at times, emotional read. Yes, there’s instant attraction between the two main characters. Yes, there is a tigress hidden under those dowdy clothes. However, there is a building sexual tension between the two of them that was nicely written and made it a bit more believable. Trista, even though she’s a genius, is a bit naïve when it comes to the danger she finds herself in. Matt has blamed himself for his best friend’s death for so long, he doesn’t know how to feel anything else. Guarding Trista changes all of that. When someone tries multiple times to kill her, he knows that Trista makes him feel things he’s never felt. Once he realizes that he DOES want to be happy, and takes the steps to make that happen, you will fall head over heels for him. The two of them do not get an immediate HEA. They actually have to work for it like two adults. Add to all of this the secondary characters, Matt’s friends and fellow K-9 officers, and you’ve got yourself one hell of a romance. The dogs are a bonus! This is the first I’ve read by this author, but I guarantee, it won’t be the last. Well done, Tee O’Fallon! Very well done!

“Are you all right?”
Trista jerked her head around to find Sgt. Connors crouching on the floor beside her, his face only inches from hers, his incredibly broad shoulders blocking out all else. Big brown eyes pinned her and she couldn’t tear her gaze away. No, his eyes were more like cocoa, coffee and caramel all rolled into one. Yummy.
The look he continued to give her was intense. His dark brows drew together as he searched her face, as if looking for injuries.
“Are you all right?” he repeated, frowning. Actually, it was more of a scowl.
Yes, she wanted to say. But her throat was clogged again, and no matter how much she tried, her lips wouldn’t move.
She took a deep breath, praying it would kick her brain into gear. It didn’t. The only thing it did, was send his sexy, way-too-appealing aftershave directly to her lungs and her brain.
Say something, stupid.
“I—” She swallowed. Lord, she’d thought he was good looking before, but this close …OMG. She might not be able to speak to certain men, but that didn’t mean her libido was dead. For a man, he was utterly stunning. In a tough, rugged kind of way.
“Do you think you can get up?” Sgt. Connors held out an enormously large, incredibly strong-looking hand. “Let me help you.”
Now staring stupidly into his eyes, she placed her hand in his, noting several thick scars on his hands and forearms. As he began pulling her to her feet, an inhuman snort ruffled her hair.
A large brown and black muzzle thrust its way into her peripheral vision. Trista gasped and scrambled in the opposite direction—straight into Sgt. Connors’ hard chest.
Her pulse pounded. Her body trembled a she took in quick breaths. The dog stared at her steadily from amber-gold eyes, a shade lighter than Sgt. Connors’.
She tried pushing herself farther from the dog, but not only weren’t her sensible shoes gaining traction on the shiny granite floor, but Sgt. Connors’ body was an immovable mountain of muscle.
Still holding her hand, he hugged her tighter against his body, wrapping his other arm around her waist. “It’s okay…” His deep voice rumbled in her ear. “Sedni.” In response to his command, the dog sat. “Sheba won’t hurt you. She’s here to protect you.”
“I d-doubt that.” Cynophobia—fear of dogs—was something she’d lived with since she was six years old.
He gave a slight tug and pulled her to her feet. Blood rushed to her head and she wavered, instinctively putting out a hand for balance. Her fingers contacted the center of his chest. His shirt felt odd, and it occurred to her that he was wearing a protective vest under his uniform. That, and he smelled really, really good. Like cedar, leather, and dark rum all rolled into one intoxicating scent.

I’ll say this about Christian — he made one hell of a first impression.
When I first saw the strapping man, he was doing handstands naked on a dock along the canal. His crown jewels were far more entertaining than anything else I’d seen on the boat tour, so I did what any curious woman would do — I took his photo. I might have looked at the shot a few dozen times. Little did I know I’d meet him again, a year later, at a secret garden bar in the heart of the city, where I’d learn that his mind and his mouth were even more captivating. But given the way my heart had been trampled, I wanted only a simple deal — No strings. No expectations.

Our arrangement worked well enough until the day I needed a lot more from him…

***
Let me just say, this whole part-time lover thing was her idea. I’d have gone all-in from the start, but hey, when a gorgeous, brilliant woman invites you into her bed, and only her bed…well, I said yes.

But then, one hysterical phone call from my brother later, begging me to find myself a wife so grandfather’s business stays in the family, and I need a promotion with Elise. Turns out a full-time husband suits her needs too, and a temporary marriage of convenience ought to do the trick, until we can simply untie the knot…

As long as no one finds out…
As long as no one gets hurt…
As long as no one falls in love…

But our ending was one I never saw coming.

REVIEW: PART-TIME LOVER by Lauren Blakely is a contemporary, adult, stand alone erotic, romance story line focusing on language translator Christian Ellison of British / Danish decent, and British / French business woman Elise Durand. Although Christian and Elise were first introduced to the reader in the author’s Wanderlust, PART-TIME LOVER can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Christian and Elise) PART-TIME LOVER follows the in the aftermath of a ‘missed opportunity’ in Denmark wherein a chance meeting between Christian and Elise is only the beginning of their fated relationship. Fast forward one year, and fate will throw our couple together, once again, but this time Christian isn’t willing to let go without a fight as he pursues the woman who has starred in all of his fantasies for close to a year. What ensues is the ‘friends with benefits’ relationship, on Elise’s terms, that soon grow into something more when, in order to save the Ellison family business, Elise makes Christian an offer he is unable to refuse-a marriage of convenience with an end date-an end that neither one was willing to accept.

The relationship between Christian and Elise is fated by circumstance, by chance, by attraction and by spirit. Elise doesn’t do romance or relationships. Burned in the past, our heroine is no longer willing to risk her heart for a possible happily ever after that will never come to be. The $ex scenes are intimate, erotic, and intense without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

PART –TIME LOVER is a fantastic addition to any romance reader’s collection of memorable, sassy and sexy story lines. The back and forth, one on one witty interaction and inter-play between our leading couple is refreshing, amusing, clever and fun. Lauren Blakely pulls the reader into an edgy, emotional and energetic tale about betrayal, heartbreak, reflection and love.

~Elise~A year ago

The boat slides under another bridge then motors through a more residential area, passing homes on the water and private docks every few feet. My eyes hungrily eat up the view. My current hometown of Paris is my love, but I could get used to weekends in Copenhagen. It’s a delightful mix of old and new, like a Swiss alpine town mated with a futuristic sky-rise city.

As I gaze at the sun-soaked homes, I imagine lazy afternoons drinking strong coffee on the deck, reading delicious tales under the rays. That seems like a recipe for happiness for the rest of my days.

I want to feel that way. Happy. It’s been so damn elusive lately, and for a fleeting moment, it feels as if I grasp it again, so I’m no longer teetering on the edge of grief and shame.

But that’s why I’m here, to move past that terrible duet.

I try valiantly to simply enjoy everything in front of me: the buildings, the water, the view.

As we round the bend in the canal, I blink at the view.

Holy hell, the unexpected view.

Nearby is a private dock.

On that dock is a man.

He’s performing a downward-facing dog, and his rear is facing us.

What a spectacular ass.

It’s not covered in sweatpants or basketball shorts.

It’s au naturel, as finely sculpted as the statue of David.

He’s a dog all right.

I sit up.

I practically stand. I lean on the edge of the boat, agog. I won’t even pretend I’m not looking. I’m ogling.

The Japanese friends whisper and point. The couple shifts closer to get a better look. The college girls titter and laugh.

We slide along on the calm water, and now we’re fifty feet away from a sight way better than the Little Mermaid statue, more magnificent than the royal palace.

He bends forward, pressing his palms into the wood, lifting his legs, and flipping them upside down.

Full. Frontal. Birthday suit.

He’s a tall drink of a man, and I’m so very thirsty.

“Look,” I whisper to Veronica, though of course she’s already engaged in the fine art of gawking. “Did you know the Mad Naked Handstander of Copenhagen was on the tour?”

She sighs contentedly. “I am so glad you forced me to go to the buffet.” She parks her chin in her hands, watching the tall upside-down creature.

“My favorite part of the buffet is dessert,” I say, as my eyes gobble him up.

This man wears nudity well, even in this unusual position.

“I enjoyed the rubies and emeralds in Rosenborg Castle, but I like these crown jewels even better,” I say.

And hey, perhaps I’m perving, but I’m an equal-opportunity spectator at this private dock show. I don’t merely peer at the centerpiece of his physique, resting majestically against the grooves of his abs. My eyes take a most happy stroll up and down his carved body, from the planes of his stomach, to his strong thighs, to his arms ripped with muscles. His face is hard to read at 180 degrees, but I see the shape of his cheekbones, carved by angels.

Then, he moves. He walks on his hands. Back and forth.

Like he’s performing.

Showing off his most unique skill set.

I chuckle louder.

Then louder still when he holds himself up on one hand only, waving to us.

“What a show-off,” Veronica says.

Lars clears his throat. “And sometimes, we see the unexpected sights of Copenhagen.”

I do what any curious onlooker might do. I grab my phone and snap.

Snap.

Snap.

The man stands, takes a bow, and waves.

My chest heats up. The temperature in me flirts with mercury levels. He’s a stunner. My God, he’s like Skarsgård, from this distance.

And because I believe in speaking my mind, I cup my hand over my mouth and shout, “Bravo. All of it.”

He doffs an imaginary top hat and takes a bow. “My pleasure.” His voice books across the water, his accent a British one.

Sparks unexpectedly race down my chest. That accent is delicious. “Oh no. The pleasure is truly all mine.”
