ABOUT THE BOOK: September 29, 2018

For the last twenty years, Cobalt has burned with a need of one female, a beautiful raven-haired cougar who captured his heart the moment he set eyes on her. His position as pride protector has been a blessing at past mating gatherings, keeping females away, but this time it feels like the worst of curses, because the female who has bewitched him so thoroughly is taking part for the first time and all he can do is watch as males battle for her.

As much as she hates the way her mother controls everything in her life, Ember is thankful for it as she constantly turns away suitors, unaware of the pain she’s sparing Ember from with every male she rejects. Every male who isn’t the gorgeous blond with darkness in his eyes and an easy smile she burns for with an intensity that scares her, awakens feelings in her that have her verging on doing something reckless. Damaged goods he might be, dangerous and unpredictable, but with every contest over her that pulls her closer to her doom, she grows more determined to follow her heart, no matter the consequences.

With every fight over the right to Ember, the tethers on Cobalt’s feelings twist and threaten to snap, a torment he cannot bear and one that has him willing to risk it all, because a single kiss would make even the harshest punishment worth it. He would die for one moment with her… his fated mate.

REVIEW: CRAVED BY HER COUGAR is the fourth instalment in Felicity Heaton’s contemporary, adult COUGAR CREEK MATES paranormal, romance series focusing on the cougar shifters of Cougar Creek, Canada. This is cougar shifters Cobalt and Ember’s story line. CRAVED BY HER COUGAR can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary.

NOTE: The Cougar Creek Mates series is a spin-off from the author’s Eternal Mates series. It is not necessary to have read the previous series but there is an on-going premise throughout with the inclusion of the group known as Archangel.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Ember and Cobalt) CRAVED BY HER COUGAR picks up immediately following the events of book three wherein the ‘gathering’ for all unmated male and female cougar shifters is drawing to a close. Cobalt and his brothers own the cabins and compound where the gathering is taking place but Cobalt keeps to himself to contain his violent tendencies since the murder of his parents by the human working for Archangel. With Ember’s arrival at the gathering Cobalt struggles to reign in his control knowing Ember is his fated mate but our hero believes himself unworthy of the beautiful cougar shifter. As the other males fight for the right to claim Ember as their own, Ember takes it upon herself to prove to Cobalt he is worthy of her love knowing, he too, is her fated mate.

For twenty years Cobalt has kept his distance from the woman that calls to his heart-his fated mate-but a woman who battles between head and heart as her mother prepares our heroine for another potential mate. As the gathering continues Ember refuses to accept any challenges for her heart knowing her heart belongs to someone else.

The relationship between Ember and Cobalt is one of mutual attraction and fated DNA. Cobalt struggles as the other males fight for the right to claim Ember as one of their own but in the end Cobalt is willing to risk everything for the woman he loves. The $ex scenes are limited, passionate and intense.

Most of the previous story line couples play secondary and supporting characters including Rath and Ivy, and Yasmin and Flint.

Like most of Felicity’s story lines CRAVED BY HER MATE is more of a written narrative using memories, thoughts and introspection. The world building continues to focus on the ‘gathering’-a time of mating heat between unmated males and females. Once again, Archangel is worthy of only a mention in relationship and explanation of Cobalt’s emotional withdrawal and outbursts. The premise is engaging; the romance is fated; the characters are broken, charismatic and colorful. CRAVED BY HER MATE is a solid and strong instalment in Felicity Heaton’s Cougar Creek Mates paranormal series.

As her mother started talking about the males currently residing at the creek, Ember pushed the door open and peered out, and relief washed through her when she saw the male who had been ogling her was gone now.
She carried her mug of coffee to her favourite recliner on the deck that wrapped around her family’s large cabin and eased into it, loosing a deep sigh as she let all the tension drain from her limbs and savoured the silence of morning.
She loved this time, when the creek was quiet, the babbling river and the movement of animals in the distance the only sound.
The quiet before the storm.
It wouldn’t be long before the rest of the creek woke and the first fights of the day happened.
Although, she wasn’t the only one who was up and out early today.
She glanced off to her right, up the two hundred metre clearing to the cabin that stood proud at the top of it, sheltered by deep green pines, and the two males on the deck.
Rath raked a hand over his thick dark brown hair and said something she couldn’t hear to his brother.
Cobalt.
The towering platinum-blond had his back to her, his fine backside pressed to the railing around the deck and his hands planted beside his lean hips, bracing himself upright. His shoulders were tense beneath his black t-shirt, his hair mussed in a way that made him look as if he had come straight from his bed to see his brother.
Or from a female.
Ember hadn’t failed to notice the way a lot of the females at the creek looked at him, blatant desire in their eyes as they tracked his movements. She had never attended a gathering before, but she knew that as a member of Rath’s family, he was responsible for overseeing everything and wasn’t allowed to participate in the fights or see to the females.
So it had shocked her when she had seen the way they eyed him, hungry gazes raking over him, and how they flirted with him whenever he happened to stop near them. A few of them used any excuse to touch him, laying a hand on his arm as they spoke about something innocent like the fight schedule, or brushing their bodies against his.
He never reacted, other than to move away and place some distance between them, but he was male and that meant he wasn’t immune to the instincts the spring gathering roused in him. The mating heat affected him too. His brothers, Storm and Flint, had eyed the females in return, had even flirted with a couple.
Did Cobalt ever flirt in return?
Did he ever secretly sleep with the females?
Gods, the thought he might twisted her stomach and heart in knots.
Partly because she didn’t want him to secretly bed the females, and partly because she wanted him.
Always had.
Always would.
If she approached him, if she flirted with him as the other females did, would he turn her away? Would he draw back from her and distance himself as he did with them? Or would he give her what she needed?
What she needed from only him.
She had agreed to come to the creek for the gathering because she had wanted to see him, had needed to see him. For over thirty years, she had watched him, had seen him grow and mature, had witnessed him come into his own, becoming more alluring to her as he had found his feet and his confidence.
For three decades, she had harboured what she had thought of as a ridiculous crush on him, watching him from afar, secretly yearning for him to even glance at her whenever they were at the creek at the same time.
Aching for him to notice her.
Whenever he had taken the time to speak with her, she had been assaulted by nerves, convinced she would say or do something stupid that would tarnish his opinion of her, whatever that was.
It had taken maturing for her to discover her own confidence, to settle into her skin and be comfortable in it, to realise that she was beautiful enough to contend with the other females at the creek, to vie for his attention and maybe even steal his heart if she set her mind to it.
Her mother had rattled that confidence when she had asked Rath to tend to her, and had been chipping away at it ever since, with every male who fought for her and every time she was paraded in front of them.
It didn’t help that Cobalt seemed determined to avoid her, barely looked at her now when he had let his eyes linger on her at times in the past, before she had matured.
Ember looked down at herself.
She had put a little more weight on her bones, her hips curvier than before, belly rounded and breasts fuller. Maybe he didn’t like the changes she had made to herself, but this was who she was, and she liked it. She loved her curves, didn’t want to be a stick thin female.
Her curves made her feel sexy, empowered.
Movement off to her right drew her attention back to Cobalt.
He pushed away from the railing, heaved a long sigh that lifted his broad shoulders, and said something to his brother.
Rath nodded, stood and clapped a hand down on his shoulder as Cobalt scrubbed a hand over his mouth and rubbed it across his straight jaw. His brother smiled at him, but Cobalt’s handsome face remained sober as he nodded in return, twisted and stepped off the deck.
He strode down the green, long black-jeans-clad legs making easy work of the distance between her and him, and she couldn’t take her eyes off him, watched him over the rim of her mug as he approached.
Damn, he was fine.
He radiated an alluring sort of danger and temptation, roused her instincts and brought them to the fore, until she was restless with a need to stand and move around the deck, to let him get a good look at her and what he was missing out on, all in an effort to lure him to her.
Ember kept her backside planted to her recliner instead.
Not because she didn’t want Cobalt to look at her, or because she would have been ashamed at herself for trying to lure his gaze to her by parading herself in front of him when her mother insisted on her showing off her curves to every male who fought for her, but because her confidence was low today, the last few weeks battering it.
Every fight she had to watch, and every suitor who stood before her stole a piece of it.
Every horrible moment where she had to wait, praying her mother would refuse that suitor, shook it.
Every day when Cobalt ignored her tore it down a little more.
But every day when she set eyes on him, he gave back that fragment he ripped from her. Just looking at him started a fire within her, one that burned so hot it had her forgetting that she was tired of males, tired of fights.
And whenever he did look at her?
When his stunning pale grey-gold eyes landed on her, that fire exploded into an inferno that had a shot of adrenaline blazing through her, filled her to the brim with confidence again.
Ember tracked him across the green, silently willing him to look at her. She needed his eyes on her today, needed that boost so she could finally tell her mother she was done with letting her control her life, that it was time for some changes and she was going to make her own decisions from now on.
But he didn’t even glance her way as he neared her.
His grey eyes remained locked on the grass, a troubled edge to them that echoed the emotions she could sense in him as he grew closer.
Emotions that had her wanting to rise onto her feet for a different reason, not to lure his eyes to her but to ask him what was wrong.
The sight of him troubled roused her deepest instincts, ones that had come into sharp focus over the past few weeks and had hit her with a revelation that had rocked her, but gods, it had explained so much at the same time.
She had always believed the attraction she felt towards Cobalt was based solely on his charisma, looks, and personality, all the sorts of things that falling in love with someone normally involved.
But this was the first time she had seen him since she had matured, and the attraction she had felt towards him when she had set eyes on him again had burned so fiercely it had left her shaking.
Over the weeks, that attraction had only grown stronger, seemed to multiply one hundredfold every damned day, and now it was becoming a struggle to restrain herself when he was near, to deny her instincts to approach him and push him, to initiate something by attempting to dominate him.
To provoke a reaction.
It hadn’t taken her long to realise the reason why.
He was her fated male.
Was he aware that she was his fated one?
He was older than her, matured three decades ago now, and as far as she knew, males were meant to be more aware of their true mate, found it easier to tell who it was than the females of her species. Males were driven by instincts that females also possessed when it came to a mate, but hers weren’t as fierce or as controlling.
She felt an ache for him, soul-deep and consuming, one that demanded she provoke him, push and cajole him, rub against him and make him notice her. Her instincts wanted her to tease him into dominating her and staking a claim on her.
His instincts should have been pressing him to do just that, to seize her and bite her nape, and bind them as mates. They should have been riding him as hard as hers were, demanding he take care of her, and drive any unmated males away from her.
If he was feeling any of that, he was hiding it well, because he was more distant than ever, had barely said three words to her over the past few weeks and showed no sign of desire when he did look at her.
He watched the fights over her without a trace of emotion on his face, in complete and utter control as he oversaw them, and didn’t even seem bothered when her mother mulled over whether to give the winner permission to ease her needs.
Didn’t he want her?
The thought that he might not left her cold and aching inside, scraped out and hollow.
Was it possible she was wrong about him and he wasn’t her fated one?
If she wasn’t mistaken, was it possible for a male to not want his true mate?
Rath had gone crazy over Ivy when she had come to the creek, and Ember had witnessed both Storm and Flint driven to extremes to protect and win their fated ones.
Was it really possible that Cobalt didn’t desire her as his mate?
He finally lifted his head and a shiver bolted through her when his eyes slid her way and his gaze settled on her, some of the shadows lifting from his face as he looked at her.
Ember opened her mouth to greet him.
Her mother stepped out onto the deck and Cobalt’s grey gaze shifted to her.
“Two more fights today.” Her mother sighed. “Neither of them containing any males really worthy of you. If only Rath had accepted our offer.”
Ember’s eyes widened as Cobalt’s narrowed, her heart hitching in her throat and pounding there as she fought to find her voice to say she didn’t want Rath and it hadn’t been her idea to approach his brother.
She swore Cobalt’s face darkened before he looked away and lowered it, and his pace picked up, long legs carrying him swiftly past her. She watched him go, feeling the faintest echo of his emotions and trying to decipher them, because she needed to know what he was feeling.
She needed to know whether he felt anything at all for her.
She just needed a sign.
One sign.
A look. A smile. Anything to make his feelings clear.
Because then she was sure she would find the courage to follow her heart.
And it would lead her straight to him.

REVIEW: TORIN is the third instalment in the contemporary, adult SAVAGE KINGS MC erotic, MC romance series focusing on the members of the Savage Kings MC, co-authored by Lane Hart and DB West. This is former MC president and widower Torin Fury, and exotic dancer Lexi Cruz’s story line. TORIN can be read as a stand alone but I recommend reading the series in order especially book one –CHASE- for backstory and cohesion as Torin’s story line has been building throughout the series.

NOTE: If you have not read book one –CHASE- there may be some spoilers in my review.

Told from dual first person points of view (Torin and Lexi) TORIN follows the building relationship between former MC president and widower Torin Fury, and exotic dancer Lexi Cruz. Several months earlier Torin lost the love of his life, Kennedy, along with their unborn son in a drive-by shooting meant to send a message to the Savage Kings MC. Fast forward to present wherein Torin, after stepping down as the Savage Kings president, takes matters into his own hands, in an attempt to exact revenge against Hector Cruz-the leader of the local drug cartel-and the man ultimately responsible for the death of Torin’s wife and son. Enter exotic dancer and Hector’s daughter Lexi Cruz, and the woman with whom Torin will fall in love. What ensues is the building but acrimonious relationship between Torin and Lexi, and the potential fall-out as Lexi’s secret is revealed, and our heroine is targeted for information revealed.

Approximately one year earlier Lexi Cruz thought she found someone to love but that someone is the man currently out to destroy her life. Used as a pawn in her father’s deadly game of power and control Lexi would find herself on the run to keep secret the events about to change her life. Torin Fury is determined to end his life but first he wants to destroy Hector Cruz of the past. Killing Lexi Cruz is first and foremost on the top of his list but falling for the innocent beauty takes our hero by surprise.

The relationship between Torin and Lexi is an enemies to lovers, enemies who met on one prior occasion; an occasion that changed the direction of Lexi’s life. Torin wants nothing to do with Lexi until Lexi tells Torin the truth about their past, a truth that will change the direction of Torin’s life next. The $ex scenes are erotic and intense.

The secondary and supporting characters are colorful and charismatic. There is a rat in the clubhouse, and our heroine is about to reveal what she knows and why.

TORIN is a story of betrayal and vengeance; family and friendship; forgiveness and love. The premise is revealing and engaging; the characters are dynamic and charismatic; the romance struggles with preconceived notions. If you are a fan of the MC story line then I suggest you give Lane Hart and DB West’s SAVAGE KINGS MC a try.

REVIEW: Ok, I really wasn’t sure.

As you know, I don’t really like first person POV (point of view), the story told by the characters, I’d much rather read it in the 3rd person. But I settled down and opened my kindle …..

Heidi is a reality show star, and a psychology major, but wants a change of career, and becoming a roadie to a band seems like a good idea…. but she doesn’t get it, what she gets is a personal assistant to the band job, she will have to organise them and have them ready in three months time for a tour.

Heidi wants this, she knows she can do this, but there are stipulations …… In her contract it clearly states that getting romantically or sexually involved with any band member is strictly forbidden, it will lead to instant dismissal and possible legal problems.

She needs to be on call to the band 24/7, she will have to keep them motivated, and she has to be ready to go in less than a week !!
She’s so excited, she’s a huge fan, and then guilt hits …. what about Daniel ? (That’s the boyfriend) they won’t see each other until it’s done, how will their relationship survive? And as it is, Heidi is a little worried as two years down the line, the passion is gone, and they live like an old married couple……

John is a rock star, living the dream …..
But he’s not really happy, he’s drunk most of the time, but he needs something, but isn’t sure what ….. until he meets the bands new personal assistant Heidi, there is interest in her eyes, and he’s seen it all before, but still, John is drawn to her.
He’s possessive and very controlling toward Heidi from day one.

It’s written like a diary entry, which made it a different way to read. This book is just that “Week 1 in Austin”, it all literally transpires in one week !!!

After their initial meeting, there is lots of flirting and looks between the couple.

And by the end of the week, they’ve slept together !!

She is so confused ….. he wants her, he’s possessive, but after sex ignores her !! Then when the guilt about Daniel creeps in, she becomes very confused ….

she can’t get a reading on his emotions (and studying psychology, you would have thought she would be able to read him a little better ?!

The by-play between the two characters is very tangled, lots of mixed messages (in fact I think too many mixed messages)

So I’m hoping the next book will slow down and clarify a few things, and these mixed messages need to lessen (as I go really dizzy at one point) ?

WEEK 2 IN AUSTIN (The Capture)
The Austin Series #2
by Henriette Vesterbak
Release Date: September 1, 2018
Genre: adult, contemporary, rock, romance

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / B&N / KOBO

He’s a world-famous rock star from Texas. She’s his personal assistant. Can they make it work?

“I’m in charge. You understand that now, don’t you?”
“Yes,” I gasp.
“Good. Glad we sorted that out,” he answers coolly.

This erotic new adult novel follows reality star Heidi Johansen during the second week of her 14-day probation period as personal assistant to the rock band South Bane—14 days she’ll never forget.

A week in, she throws caution to the wind and lets herself give in to John and his incessant flirting. Heidi quickly comes to realize that she’s completely unprepared for the kind of relationship John’s looking for. Total submission. She finds herself wondering, Can I handle this?

The sudden romance puts all her limits to the test. Her physical and emotional limits become lines in the sand, and the more John pushes her, the harder she falls for him. But the crossing of her personal boundaries is the least of her problems – there’s still a clause in her employment contract standing between her and the great love affair she can just about see on the horizon.

John presents her with one alluring demand after the other, as Heidi fights to keep their romance secret from Ben and Mason. She wants him more than anything, but getting a pink slip from the job that brought them together in the first place could ruin everything before it has even really started. Will they find a way to make it work?

This novel is part of the Austin Series:
Week 1 in Austin – The Chase
Week 2 in Austin – The Capture

Heidi’s two weeks in Austin pass in a blur of drinking, smoking, cursing, flirting, banging, and kissing, putting all her limits to the test. The eroticism is permeated with intimacy and love, and the intense romance between John and Heidi taps into the desire to be taken—mind, body, and soul.

The Austin Series offers an intriguing combination of excitement and a sizzling affair, delivered with elegance and eloquence.

REVIEW: This is part two, and you really need to read book one.

This whole book covers just one week duh ?
so ….

week 2 and the chemistry is still hot between Heidi and John (but still plays games with her head and heart, is he testing her ? And if so why ?)

But he continues to blow hot and cold, and the dominance he tries to pull on Heidi is definitely not fifty shades, he sounds like a petulant child. And Heidi needs to say no mean no…..

Heidi needs to keep their romance under cover (if she’s found out, she’ll be sacked and sent back home) but the other band members are beginning to suspect a few things.

John wants total obedience, and he gets a little nasty with it (is it because of his drinking ? Or is there a more sinister reason?)
He can’t work Heidi out, so he continues to push her buttons.

And what happens when the other band members find out ? Will they insist she leaves ? And why is everyone warning her away from John ?
And what about Daniel ? What will he think if the gossip about the P.A and the rock star hits the news ?

Roll on week 3 ?

When Sierra becomes the target of his unforeseen enemy, Beckett must vanquish his demons to save her.

••••••••••

REVIEW: FRACTURED HONOR is the first instalment in Kaylea Cross’ contemporary, adult CRIMSON POINT romantic suspense series focusing on the people of Crimson Point, Oregon. This is thirty-nine year old Captain Beckett Hollister, and thirty-one year old, veterinarian Dr. Sierra Buchanan’s story line.

Told from several third person perspectives including Beckett and Sierra, FRACTURED HONOR follows the friends to lovers/best friend’s little sister trope between thirty-nine year old Captain Beckett Hollister, and thirty-one year old, veterinarian Dr. Sierra Buchanan. When his last mission to Syria went all to h*ll, Beckett returned Stateside to discover his father only had months to live. Struggling to overcome the horrors witnessed on his last assignment Beckett Hollister throws himself headfirst into his father’s business, hiring some of his former Special Forces teammates in the wake. Returning to Crimson Point, Oregon also meant having to face the woman that has always called to his heart but a woman off-limits as Sierra Buchanan was his best friend’s little sister, and he was in no position to demand anything more. What ensues is the building love and relationship between Beckett and Sierra, and the potential fall-out as Beckett’s past comes seeking revenge for a mission that was out of his control.

Sierra Buchanan has had a crush on her brother’s best friend for as long as she can remember but Sierra has been friend-zoned for almost as long. No longer the little girl Beckett remembers Sierra isn’t willing to wait for Beckett to make the first move knowing she would probably have to wait forever. Beckett Hollister has lusted after his best friend’s sister but wasn’t willing to cross the line between friendship and love but his father’s recent decline found our hero needing the friendship and companionship of the woman that called to his heart.

The relationship between Beckett and Sierra is a friends to lovers romance wherein Beckett battles between head and heart. His neighbor’s elderly dog is the perfect excuse to get closer to the woman he loves but getting closer may also mean placing Sierra in the direct line of fire. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

We are introduced to Beckett’s fellow Special Forces solders: Sergeant Jase Weaver; Carter Boyd and his wife Molly; Beckett’s father Mr. Hollister; Sierra’s brother Sheriff Noah Buchanan, and town newcomer Poppy Larsen. Noah and Poppy’s story is next in Buried Lies.

The world building follows the romance between Sierra and Beckett, as well as the crumbling relationship between Carter and Molly. Carter suffers with the lingering after affects of head injuries suffered during the war in Syria, injuries that are now contributing to the demise of his marriage.

FRACTURED HONOR is a story of betrayal and revenge; honor and support; romance, love and happily ever after. The relationship between the tight-knit group of Special Forces soldiers struggles in the face of the knowledge that one of their own is facing a battle he is starting to lose. The premise is intriguing, engaging and realistic; the characters are damaged, spirited and colorful; the romance is seductive and spicy.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date July 2018

Thorn

From the first time I played army as a kid, the military has been my life. As an Airborne Major, I’d led my men through two tours in Afghanistan. But when my father was elected president, I became an even greater target for the enemy—a prize for someone to take out. To ensure not only the safety of myself, but of my men, I got stripped of my cammies, shoved into an Armani suit, and placed into a management position at my father’s company. After years of trekking through the desert with an assault rifle, I was way out of my area of expertise, which my transition coordinator was more than happy to let me know on a daily, if not hourly basis. The brunette bombshell would be the death of me in more ways than one, especially since I hadn’t been with a woman since my last deployment. She’s turning out to be one of the greatest foes I’ve ever done battle with.

Isabel

In the backwoods Georgia town I was born in, you either married right out of high school or got the hell out of town. I chose the second and never looked back. After graduating top in my class, I started working for The Callahan Corporation. Fast forward five years and I was about to become the youngest female manager in the history of my department. And then all the blood, sweat, and tears I’d put into my career were for nothing when the boss’s billionaire son was handed my position on a silver platter. Not only that, I was expected to help transition him into the job that was supposed to be mine. Sure, he’s easy on the eyes with his chiselled good-looks and impossibly built physique, but I’m not going to let that distract me. I hope soldier boy is good at military strategy because sabotage is the name of the game I’ll be playing.

REVIEW: OFFICE MATE by Katie Ashley is the second instalment in Katie Ashley’s contemporary, adult, erotic romance series focusing on the Callahan siblings. This is thirty-one year old, US Army veteran Thorn Callahan, and twenty-nine year old, financial investor Isabel Flannery’s story line. OFFICE MATE can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story line is revealed where necessary.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Thorn and Isabel) OFFICE MATE follows the building romance between thirty-one year old, US Army veteran Thorn Callahan, and twenty-nine year old, financial investor Isabel Flannery. Now that his father was elected the President of the United States, US Army veteran Thorn Callahan has been pulled from active duty in an attempt to keep any potential enemies from targeting our story line hero. What Thorn never expected was to be named Vice-President of his father’s Wall Street investment firm-Callahan Corporation-a position originally intended for someone else. Enter Isabel Flannery, scorned co-worker, and the woman with whom Thorn would fall in love. What ensues is the enemies to lovers relationship between Thorn and Isabel, and the potential fall-out as their relationship goes public, and is in direct confrontation of the corporation’s no fraternization policy among executives.

Isabel Flannery is beyond pissed that the promotion for which she had been groomed was now going to the President’s son-president of the corporation as well as President of the USA. Unable to persuade management that she was entitled to the vice-president position, Isabel begins to sabotage Thorn Callahan, hoping the repercussions would push Thorn out of his current position. Thorn Callahan never thought about leaving the military but when his last mission went all to h*ll, and his father was elected to the highest office in the USA Thorn found himself the new vice-president of Callahan Corporation. But things start to fall apart, rather quickly, including a sudden illness that pulls Thorn from the job at hand.

The relationship between Thorn and Isabel is one of immediate attraction but Thorn’s attraction is tempered by the knowledge that Callahan Corporation has a no fraternization policy. In order to remain distant and aloof, Thorn becomes a demanding a$$hole pushing Isabel to retaliate in return. The $ex scenes are limited but erotic and intense without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

The colorful secondary and supporting characters include Thorn’s brother Barrett Callahan and his fiancé Addison (Running Mate #1), as well as their sister Caroline. We are introduced to Thorn’s bodyguard and secret service agent Ty, and Isabel’s roommate Mila. Ty and Caroline’s story line is next in Roommate.

OFFICE MATE is a slow building enemies to lovers/office romance story line. Isabel Flannery’s acts of sabotage were immature and in one instance, dangerous and bordering on assault. In all honesty, Isabel’s behaviour was unethical, and thusly proves she was ill-prepared for the position she did not receive. Insubordination and reprimands were necessary to negate her verbal outbursts but her behind the scenes sabotage were concerning and wrong. There was nothing funny about our heroine’s behaviour, and I struggled with my overall enjoyment due to the nature of the acts. The premise is engaging; the characters were charismatic; the romance is spicy and hot.

SUGAR ( Cake #2) by Lauren Dane-a review

About the book: Release Date September 10, 2018

A Cake sequel

An impromptu road trip makes for the honeymoon Gregori and Wren didn’t know they wanted

Bad-boy artist Gregori Ivanov wants nothing more than to marry Wren Davis. He’s asked her before—more than once—but she insisted on waiting until she’d established her own career. Now that the time is finally right, Gregori has one hell of a celebration in mind. Restaurants, museums and NYC luxury all the way…on top of all the newlywed sex they’ll be having.

The universe, unfortunately, did not get the message. When their plane is grounded in Idaho, they’re forced to improvise a road trip to get back to Seattle instead of the romantic getaway Gregori painstakingly planned. But that they’re together is what’s important, and with giant roadside potato museums, funky galleries in towns with little more than two stoplights and some seriously great diner food—in between all the great sex—Gregori and Wren find a honeymoon as unique and memorable as their love.

REVIEW: SUGAR is the sequel novella to Lauren Dane’s contemporary, adult CAKE romance story line focusing on artists and lovers Wren Davis, and Gregori Ivanov. SUGAR can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous instalment is revealed where necessary but I recommend reading book one CAKE for backstory and cohesion.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Wren and Gregori) SUGAR fast forwards Wren and Gregori’s story approximately six years wherein Gregori’s latest proposal of marriage is finally accepted by our storyline heroine. Having set his marriage plans into motion, Gregori booked a plane from Seattle to New York, in the hopes of celebrating his wedding with his bride to be but bad weather derailed the plane on the way to the Big Apple, such that our couple rented a car and made the cross –country journey back home. What ensues is a sweet, tender and gentle look as a surly Russian artist as he gives into his new wife’s sense of adventure and fun.

SUGAR is a quick read; a romantic, sugar-coated story of one couple’s adventurous honeymoon and the stops along the way.

ABOUT THE BOOK: release Date October 9, 2018

The universe is conspiring against Ava Breevort. As if flying back to Phoenix to bury a childhood friend wasn’t hell enough, a cloud of volcanic ash traveling from overseas delayed her flight back home to Boston. Her last ditch attempt to salvage the trip was thwarted by an arrogant Scotsman, Caleb Scott, who steals a first class seat out from under her. Then over the course of their journey home, their antagonism somehow lands them in bed for the steamiest layover Ava’s ever had. And that’s all it was–until Caleb shows up on her doorstep.

When pure chance pulls Ava back into Caleb’s orbit, he proposes they enjoy their physical connection while he’s stranded in Boston. Ava agrees, knowing her heart’s in no danger since a) she barely likes Caleb and b) his existence in her life is temporary. Not long thereafter Ava realizes she’s made a terrible error because as it turns out Caleb Scott isn’t quite so unlikeable after all. When his stay in Boston becomes permanent, Ava must decide whether to fight her feelings for him or give into them. But even if she does decide to risk her heart on Caleb, there is no guarantee her stubborn Scot will want to risk his heart on her.

REVIEW: FIGHT OR FLIGHT by Samantha Young is a contemporary adult, stand alone romance story line focusing on thirty-five year old CFO of Koto Technologies Scotsman Caleb Scott, and thirty –year old, interior designer Ava Breevort.

Told from first person point of view (Ava) including memories of the past, FIGHT OR FLIGHT follows the enemies to lovers relationship between thirty-five year old CFO of Koto Technologies Scotsman Caleb Scott, and thirty –year old, interior designer Ava Breevort. The death of a former friend, a series of mishaps, a volcanic eruption in Europe, and several flight delays eventually find Ava Breevort facing off against a belligerent and hostile Scotsman slash Viking, who pushes all of our heroine’s buttons. From one unexpected delay to another, and an overnight stay in Phoenix, Ava’s frustration mounts as Caleb Scott becomes the proverbial thorn in her side, and vice versa. Not that Caleb is thrilled that his business plans have been placed on hold but the continuous reappearance of the beautiful but presumably high-maintenance Ava Breevort begins to chafe at Caleb’s growing anger towards a woman he perceives as all kinds of wrong. A one-night stand, and another round of run-ins in Ava’s hometown of Boston, Massachusetts continues to pull at their mutual attraction but equally mutual hatred for one another. What ensues is the agreed upon friends with benefits arrangement between Ava and Caleb, and the potential fall-out as Ava ‘apparently’ pushes too hard forcing Caleb to hurt the woman with whom he is falling in love.

Caleb Scott is a sexy, brooding, and antagonistic male whose dislike of Ava is immediate and aggressive. Unable to let go of the past, Caleb is unbending in his friends with benefits-only arrangement, an arrangement that is about to destroy the heart of our story line heroine. Caleb’s initial assessment and treatment of Ava is embarrassing and exasperating, as our heroine questions if she has done something wrong, a question that has Ava giving as good as she gets. Ava Breevort knows love and loss, a loss that has affected Ava’s self-esteem, and scarred our heroine to the possibility of future love, another betrayal, and issues of trust. Falling for Caleb was never on the radar but having her heart ripped out meant Ava needed to reassess what she wanted in her life.

The relationship between Ava and Caleb is an enemies to lovers/friends with benefits arrangement that leads to something more. For weeks Ava and Caleb will be both friends and lovers but jealousy, heartbreak and memories from the past are but the tip of the ice-burg that is slowly collapsing their hard-fought friendship. Caleb wants to know everything about the woman he refuses to love but isn’t capable of talking about his own embittered past. The push and pull of jealousy is immature and sophomoric in the face of Caleb’s inability to feel something more. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate, without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

We are introduced to Ava’s best friend, executive pastry chef Harper Smith whose own life experiences are painful and hard –there is a small plot development focusing on Harper, and the fall-out of her own relationship disaster; Ava’s bosses Stella and Patrice; and Caleb’s brother, artist Jamie Scott. I am hoping for a storyline focusing on both Harper and Jamie, but more importantly Harper and Jamie together.

FIGHT OR FLIGHT is a story of pain and heartbreak, and tainted perception. Caleb struggles in the face of former betrayal, and paints Ava with the same judgemental brush. The premise is inviting; the characters are dynamic, flawed and broken; the romance struggles in the face of preconceived notions, and demons from the past.

•••••••••••

REVIEW: DISCREET is the first instalment in Nicole French’s contemporary, adult DISCREET erotic, romance duet focusing on recluse Will Baker, and musician/singer Maggie Sharp aka Lily Pad.

Told from first person point of view (Maggie Sharp) DISCREET follows the building relationship between recluse Will Baker, and musician/singer Maggie Sharp aka Lily Pad. One year earlier Maggie Sharp’s life spiralled out of control when the man that she loved destroyed her life. Fast forward to present day wherein our heroine has returned to her hometown of Newman Lake, Idaho in an attempt to stay one-step ahead of the man who ruined it all. With a mother whose reputation is tattered and torn, our heroine steps in to fix the family-owned B&B in an attempt to provide some stability to their lives. What Maggie never expected was to meet her future, and ultimately her past, in the guise of recluse ‘mountain man’ Will Baker, a man who stirs something deep inside our story line heroine. What ensues is the building relationship and romance between Will and Maggie, and the fall-out as secrets and lies are about to be revealed, and in the process destroy them both.

Four years earlier famed Hollywood actor Fitzwilliam ‘Fitz’ Baker disappeared without a trace in a suspected boating accident off the coast of Maine. Fast forward to present day wherein our hero, in hiding and seclusion, keeps to himself on Newman Lake, until the fateful day chance and a pothole found Maggie Sharp injured with nowhere to go. Trying to hide from his past, Will Baker keeps secret his true identity, in an effort to live without the paparazzi and media beating at his door. Maggie Sharp knows success is ultimately followed by failure but, combine that with an abusive ex who continues to taunt, Maggie is desperate to remain one-step ahead before everything comes crashing back down.

The relationship between Maggie and Will is tempestuous. Will suffers severe anxiety and refuses to venture forth where anyone may recognize our story line hero. Maggie is desperate to help the man she believes is keeping secrets but she never expected those secrets to bring forth her own heartbreaking and painful past. The $ex scenes are intimate, erotic and seductive without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

The secondary and supporting players include the small-minded and racist townies who continue to rip at Maggie’s already fragile heart. We are introduced to Lucas Forster who is helping Maggie repair the B&B but Lucas is a man with ulterior motives, one of which is hoping for a shot at our story line heroine. Eloise Sharp, Maggie’s long-suffering, alcoholic mother, remains fixated on the past, a fixation that keeps Eloise at the bottom of a bottle, at the local bar.

DISCREET is a story of secrets and lies, betrayal and trust. The premise is intriguing; the characters are broken, embittered and impassioned; the slow building romance is provocative and hot. DISCREET ends on a cliff-hanger, you have been warned.

“I don’t like feeling like this,” Will said.
I sucked a breath through my teeth. “Feeling like what?”
“Like this.” He took a step toward me, and I fought not to step backward. Will had a quiet authority about him, and in the shadows of the moon, his shoulders seemed to broaden, his legs seemed to lengthen. He seemed larger than life.
When he had me backed up against the porch railing, he raised a hand, floating his fingers around my jaw, over my cheeks, but never actually touching me. I arched toward his hand. I couldn’t help it. But he hovered, never making contact.
“You make me feel…” Will started. “Out of control.”
I couldn’t move. “Oh?”
“Like I actually have to care about what someone else thinks. Like I’m not alone anymore.” He paused. His eyes opened wide, following the path of his fingers as they took hold of a strand of hair in my ponytail and twirled. “And for the first time in a very long time, I feel like I don’t want to be.”
He tugged lightly on the strand, and I felt the slight pinch like an arrow through my body, shooting down my arms and legs, and coming to throb in that place no man had been for so, so long. I bit my lip. Will’s eyes dilated.
“Tell the truth, Lil. What do you want?”
You. The word echoed distantly, like a bell tolling from miles away. I didn’t understand it. I was broken. A mess. What should I want with this man? We had a connection, sure, but overall, he was nothing but trouble. He was grouchy. A loner. Clearly had serious social and emotional control issues.
And yet. There was no denying that something was here. Since we met, it certainly felt at times as if the universe itself was tilting on its axis, trying to knock me into him. Breakdown after breakdown. Meeting after meeting. And now…
I tipped my chin up so I could look directly at him, drawn like one of the moths circling the porch light. Winging through the dark, ready to dive into his golden inferno.
“I don’t want Lucas,” I said quietly, drifting my gaze up and down his naked torso. A sheen of sweat glimmered in the moonlight, which also made the shadows of his muscles—the square pectorals, the solid rack of abs, the lickable V that dipped beneath his shorts—that much more evident.
Will followed my gaze, and his hand dropped. He stepped between my legs, and his unique scents engulfed me. Working all afternoon only made them that much stronger—the scent of pine trees, lake water, and man swallowed me with a heady rush that made me shake slightly. And it was then, only then, that he finally touched me. My waist was encircled by his wide palms, so broad that his fingers nearly touched on either side. It was relatively innocent, but the intent was clear. Just like last night, he held me still; I couldn’t move unless he wanted me to. For that moment, I was his.
When I looked back up, his eyes were fixed on my lips. Unconsciously, I licked the lower one. His pupils dilated even more.
“Lil,” he whispered as he leaned a little closer.
“What are you waiting for?” I murmured. Now I was the one staring at his mouth—so soft and full under his newly trimmed beard.
I panted. Will swore.
“Fuck it,” he growled. “I don’t fucking know.”
Sometimes you don’t know you wanted something until you have it. Sometimes you don’t know you need something until it’s there.
His mouth found mine in a fury, one that surprised me for about a half second before. The hands at my waist gripped so tightly, I almost couldn’t breathe, and I felt like I was strangled—not for lack of oxygen, but for lack of him. Will’s lips made me feel like I was breathing for the first time; like I’d been under water my entire life, and he was the air I’d never known I needed.
