Sleight of Hand by Julie Rowe – a Review

Sleight of Hand by Julie Rowe – a Review

Amazon / B&N / Kobo / iTunes / Google Play

Description:
CDC nurse Joy Oshiro is stressed to the breaking point. College students are dying and no one knows why. And her new partner Dr. Gunner Anderson is frustratingly annoying—and sexy, but mainly just plain annoying—and proving difficult to avoid. He spent three years with Doctors Without Borders, and disillusioned is just the tip of his issues.

They’ll need to learn to trust each other if they have a chance at figuring out who is behind the attacks. She makes him laugh, makes him forget—for a little while. But each new clue keeps them one step behind the terrorists, with buildings and evidence being destroyed just as they near.

Now they’re in a race against time to not only find a cure, but also to avoid becoming the next targets themselves.

Each book in the Outbreak Task Force series is STANDALONE:
* Viable Threat
* Smoke & Mirrors
* Sleight of Hand

Review:

Sleight of Hand begins with  Dr. Gunner Anderson being told that they’re pairing him with another investigator……….again.  Gunner has issues working with people whom he thinks don’t give it their all. In walks nurse Joy Oshiro.  Even though he’s stunned to see her, secretly he’s a little happy.  Even though he knows who she is and has thought of her often, he still doesn’t know if she’ll be a good partner or not.  Having suffered a devastating loss working with Doctors Without Borders has left him almost empty…….almost.

Joy doesn’t know how to feel about becoming Gunner’s new partner.  She’s heard all of the ramblings and complaints about working with him but loves her job.  He may be sexy as hell, but that doesn’t mean they’ll be able to work together.  Having been in the military has left Joy with demons of her own, but she’s willing to give it a go.

When a call comes in with mass casualties, they make the scene and are stunned by what they see.  However, it’s when the calls keep coming that they see this is an orchestrated effort to wreak as much havoc as possible.  The two of them are exhausted and still a little weary of the other, but soon figure out they’ll have to trust each other if they’re going to survive.

Sleight of Hand is the third book in the Outbreak Task Force series, but can be read as a standalone.  I read the first book in the series a while back, but not the second, and didn’t feel that I was missing anything in the continuation of the story.  Joy and Gunner were both well written.  Gunner’s backstory more than explains his demeanor and will break your heart.  Joy’s backstory, though not as heart wrenching as Gunner’s, makes them the perfect, albeit a little dysfunctional, couple.  The two of them together makes for a fun and suspenseful read.  The secondary characters are well written as well, and I look forward to finding out a bit more about their boss, because I know she has a story to tell.  If you’re a fan of suspense and action, with a little romance thrown in, you won’t go wrong with this one.  Well done, Julie Rowe!

Beyond Risk by Connie Mann – a Review

Beyond Risk by Connie Mann – a Review

Amazon / B&N / ITunes / BAM / Book Depository

Description:

The river runs wild …

Former Fish & Wildlife Officer Charlotte “Charlee” Tanner still carries the guilt of a tragic drowning accident that occurred on her watch. She hoped moving back home to the wilds of central Florida would provide a safe haven—until she learns the death was no accident, and she’s the intended target.

… But no wilder than their passion.

Tough and decisive, Lieutenant Hunter Boudreau loves his new job as a law enforcement officer with the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission. Charlee is his best friend, so when she comes under fire, he’s not letting her out of his sight until the killer is caught. But Charlee won’t sit by and let anyone else die for her.

As danger closes in and Charlee and Hunter’s attraction threatens to consume them, Charlee has to decide if she can trust Hunter. And to save Charlee, Hunter will have to trust her, too.

Review:

A kayaking adventure gone horribly wrong is not only a personal failure for Florida river guide, Charlee Tanner, but when shots ring out on the anniversary of the tragic event, in the middle of a new tour, it’s open season for revenge and Charlee is the main target.  Though no slouch in defending herself, she’s a former Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officer, Charlee hails from a family of law enforcement, aka overprotective siblings, who run roughshod over her limits and rally to keep her safe.  Add to that lengthy list of support is Hunter Boudreau, current Lieutenant of the FWC, and Charlee’s best friend.  Charlee leans on Hunter the most, BFF definition and all, but simmering there, in the midst of chaos and uncertainty, is a deeper affection that threatens to boil over.  The risk factor heightens awareness for Hunter and Charlee, but can they stop to smell the roses while being stalked?  As a matter of fact, Author Connie Mann deems it “Beyond Risk“, ?

Start from the beginning, obviously.  Revisit the harrowing scene that haunts, and taunts, Charlee’s confidence.  The devastating drowning was avoided this trip, but the similarities begin to mirror each other soon enough.  Figures who couldn’t possibly be a threat suddenly display motive and suspicion clouds the investigation, to say nothing of judgment.  Worse, characters are dying and being used against Charlee to offer herself up as the final sacrifice.

“He lived for her pain, actually. She’d understand, finally, what he’d been going through. She’d fully experience how one person’s actions could snatch away someone you loved, changing everything. Forever.”

I’m being painfully vague, but it’s a trail you have to follow, to explore the character dynamics, to see if you deduct who the killer is.  The turns and detours are challenging and skilled.  It’s intense and well written.

Ms. Mann knows her way with a thriller.  While I suspected who the killer might be, the chase, the leads, the motives, the deadlines…they drove me relentlessly; kept me in the fight to thwart the killer from striking again.  I puzzled along with our H/H and felt all their setbacks.  I reveled in their rare moments of “downtime” when they turned to each other for solace and hope for a future, in the bleakest of times.  Beyond Risk was layered with action, sleuthing, and romance for the complete win.  The supporting cast, all those well meaning siblings, could take the lead on a new chase if you ask me.  Thank you, Lena Diaz, for the recommendation — I’d read another book by Connie Mann anytime!

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date January 29, 2019

Always the caretaker, former Marine Reid Griffith wants to help his brother adjust to civilian life…and help other former servicemen. What better way to utilize their brawn, discipline, and charm than a moving company that hires veterans? But although Reid prides himself on being strategic, he certainly doesn’t plan to fall in the spotlight of one brilliant―and beautiful―PR whiz…

PR expert Naomi Starr is determined to bring Vets on the Go! into the spotlight. But when she meets Reid, it might mean breaking her rule to never mix business with pleasure. Especially once she discovers that underneath Reid’s sexy rough-and-tumble exterior is a vulnerable man who just might need what she’s got to give.

•••••••••

REVIEW:  THE WHOLE PACKAGE is the first instalment in Marie Force’s contemporary, adult MOVIN’ ON erotic, romance series focusing on the men and women who work for Vets on the Go!-a moving company established to help former servicemen. This is thirty-four year old, Vets on the Go co-owner, and former Marine Reid Griffith, and thirty year old, PR expert Naomi Starr’s storyline. For fans of Marie Harte, there is a slight cross-over with characters from the author’s THE DONNIGANS series.

Told from several third person perspectives including Reid, Naomi and Reid’s brother Cash THE WHOLE PACKAGE introduces the concept and characters for Marie Harte’s MOVIN’ ON series. Reid Griffith, along with his brother Cash, and their cousin Evan, own and operate Vets on the Go!, a moving company that hires former servicemen and women, as well as helping those unable to help themselves. When Cash rescues a family from a potential robbery, the entire episode is caught on film, pushing ‘Vets on the Go’ to front page news, news that brings more business than the can handle to their front door. Enter PR expert Naomi Starr, the woman with whom Reid will fall in love. What ensues is the building relationship and romance between Reid and Naomi, and the potential fall-out as Reid suspects Naomi has yet to let go of someone from her past.

Reid Griffith, along with his brother Cash, grew up in a dysfunctional family environment, an environment pushed the brothers closer together but sins from the past, parental abuse and betrayal find the brothers struggling with the who, how and why. Meeting Naomi Starr, Reid sees something he has never had, a potential for a future and a happily ever after. Naomi Starr is the youngest in her family, and has always felt she didn’t quite measure up to her more successful siblings. Starting her own PR firm gave Naomi the chance to forget about the past, a past filled with heart break and hurt.

The relationship between Naomi and Reid begins as a business arrangement when Naomi sees an opportunity for both her firm and Vets on the Go. Still reeling from a broken heart Naomi battles between head and heart when her attraction to Reid is met equally strong by the same reaction from the man with whom she will fall in love. Misunderstanding and miscommunication find our couple at odds as Reid is unable to look beyond Naomi’s past, as past that comes looking for a second chance. The $ex scenes are intimate, erotica and passionate, without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

There is a large ensemble cast of colorful secondary and supporting characters. We are introduced to Reid’s brother Cash, and their business partner and cousin Evan, and Reid and Cash’s mother Angela; businessman and Reid’s friend Chris Jennings, Jameson’s Gym owner and former Marine Mac Jameson, and trainer Gavin Donnigan; Naomi’s equally large extended family of successful siblings, as well as the men and women, former military personnel who work for Vets on the Go!

The world building follows several paths as the author builds and develops some back story for Reid’s brother Cash, as well as the hint of further family drama, secrets and lies. The success of Vets on the Go! Is dependant upon the honesty and hard-working men and women of the family owned business, business that will be hit with betrayal from inside.

THE WHOLE PACKAGE is a story of family, friendship, secrets and lies, hurt, heart-ache and moving on. The premise is real, engaging and inspiring; the characters are sassy, sensitive and spirited; the romance is moving and arousing. THE WHOLE PACKAGE is a wonderful introduction to Marie Harte’s new series MOVIN’ ON.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date January 29, 2019

New beginnings are irresistible…

Christian Montgomery is burnt out. The family business is his entire world, and Christian has never stopped trying to atone for a mistake made years ago. His only break from grueling work is sitting on his beachfront deck, watching the California surfers, and wishing he could be that carefree.

Sophie Bennington was happy living in her small Kansas hometown…until she learned her entire life was a lie. So she hightailed it to the West coast, where she loves to surf, even though she’s no good at it, and she’s hoping to start a new career.

A chance encounter shows Christian and Sophie that no matter what happened in the past, the future is bright and new…but only if you have the courage to open your heart

••••••••••••

REVIEW: SUDDENLY MINE is the ninth instalment in Samantha Chase’s contemporary, adult THE MONTGOMERY BROTHERS romance series. This is businessman Christian Montgomery, and registered nurse Sophie Bennington’s story line. SUDDENLY MINE can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous instalments is revealed where necessary.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Sophie and Christian) SUDDENLY MINE follows the building romance and relationship between businessman Christian Montgomery, and registered nurse Sophie Bennington. Having watched for weeks as the beautiful woman tried to execute the perfect wave on the beach in San Diego, Christian is shocked when his fantasy turns out to be the new healthcare hire for the family owned investment firm. But things don’t always go according to plan as a stressed out and overworked Christian is forced to take some time off, time off where he will get to know Sophie Bennington. What ensues is the building romance between Christian and Sophie, and the potential fall-out as more bad news, and the spiral of repercussions forces Sophie out of Christian’s life.

Christian Montgomery is a workaholic, whose lifestyle is threatening his personal health, fuelled by a father who expects perfection and more. Meeting Sophie Bennington forces Christian to think about a possible future, a future that is threatened by sins of the past.

The relationship between Christian and Sophie is one of immediate attraction; a visceral attraction wherein Sophie believes there is a possibility of a happily ever after, one that may be destroyed by grief and guilt. The romance is passionate; the $ex scenes fade to black, and are mostly implied.

The colorful secondary and supporting characters including Christian’s parents Eliza and Joseph Montgomery; Christian’s brother Carter; their uncles Robert and William, Aunt Monica; several cousins, siblings and extended family, as well as Sophie’s grandmother Ida.

SUDDENLY MINE is a story of family, secrets, regrets and betrayal. The premise is engaging and heart breaking; the characters are real and charismatic; the romance is sweet and loving. SUDDENLY MINE is a cute story of romance, misgiving, grief and acceptance.

“This was Christian’s idea?” she asked incredulously.
“Oh…um, well, yes. He feels incredibly thankful to you for all you did.”
“I see.”
Sophie wasn’t stupid—she’d accept any and all the jobs she might get through this. That was a no-brainer. But knowing that Christian had more than likely orchestrated it bothered her. Was he doing it simply because he was thankful, or was it because he’d acted like a jerk when he’d refused to let her help him?
Unfortunately, she didn’t know him well enough to know for sure.
With no other choice—because she would make herself crazy sitting here thinking about it—she took a shower and got ready, bracing herself to go knock on Christian Montgomery’s door.
Did she take a little extra time in the shower and use her favorite scented soap?
Yes.
Did she spend a little extra time on her makeup?
Yes.
And did she curse more than once while she styled her hair because it was way too long and took forever to make look good?
Again, yes.
But as she looked at her reflection when she was done, all Sophie could say was, “Damn, girl! You look good!”
With all of the extra attention she’d already given herself, choosing something to wear was a bit more challenging. Obviously, he knew she wasn’t working, so showing up on his doorstep dressed up would look ridiculous. However, showing up in a pair of cutoffs and a T-shirt seemed wrong. It wasn’t as if she had an extensive wardrobe to begin with, but right now it sure as heck felt that way!
Grabbing a pair of faded denim capris and a bold blue halter top, she felt casually sassy. That was a thing, right?
Slipping on a pair of flip-flops, she grabbed her purse and was out the door, feeling much calmer than she had an hour ago. The drive took less than fifteen minutes, and as Sophie parked in his driveway, she took a moment to give herself a small pep talk.
“The good thing is that you have a job,” she said quietly. “It shouldn’t matter why you have the job, the fact is that you have one.” She paused. “And while it would be great if he apologized for coming off as being ungrateful last week, you need to remember that he’d had a traumatic day and maybe it wasn’t about me at all.”
Sighing, she flipped down her visor and checked her reflection in the mirror, fixing her lipstick. When she was done, she flipped it back up and continued her talk.
“If he recommended me for these jobs because he feels sorry for me, then I am completely within my rights to tell him that I’m offended. I don’t need charity. However, if he did it based on my experience, then I’ll be polite and say thank you.” She took a steadying breath and thought about how she was going to feel when she saw him back at the office after he went back to work. “He needs to know that I’m going to be checking up on him and his health more than anyone else in the company—especially in the beginning—since I know his history. Like it or not.”
No doubt he wouldn’t like that one bit, but those were her terms and she wasn’t going to be budged.
At least, she hoped she wasn’t.
With one deep, cleansing breath, Sophie climbed from her car, fidgeted with her hair, and made her way up the front steps. Ringing the bell, she wondered how Christian was going to react to her showing up unannounced.
Although, really, how else could she show up? It wasn’t as if she had his phone number.
When the front door opened, she almost forgot how to breathe.
His hair was a bit of a mess and it looked like he hadn’t shaved in a few days. But it looked good on him. Really good. His blue eyes sparkled with surprise and she swallowed hard, trying not to sigh dreamily.
Then she glanced down.
Big mistake.
Dressed in a pair of black athletic shorts and nothing else, Christian Montgomery was like some sleek, athletic god.
She’d recognized that he had a fit physique before, but seeing him standing before her practically naked confirmed it.
And then some.
Right now, she was having a hard time forming words. Never before had she seen such a perfect male specimen and her fingers nearly twitched with the need to reach out and touch his flat stomach, and then maybe scratch their way up to tangle in his hair. She bet he smelled really good too.
“Sophie?”
Oh. Right. He’d asked her a question.
“Um… I wanted to talk to you,” she said, her voice trembling a little—and not from nerves over what she wanted to say, but from the sight of him.
Maybe she should go…
Stepping aside, Christian motioned for her to come in, and with no other choice, she walked into his house.
Swallowing hard, she walked in front of him and looked around. She’d admired the house when she was here before, but at the time, her main concern had been Christian and his well-being. Now she could see just how beautiful the space was—high ceilings, exposed beams, colors that were cool and soothing in shades of tan and blue, and a wall of windows facing the ocean.
Not a bad way to live, she mused.
“Can I get you something to drink?” he asked, coming to stand beside her.
Part of her was afraid to turn and look at him because…well, she didn’t want to do anything stupid.
Like drool.

Review:

The Outlaw’s Mail Order Bride by Linda Broday is the 1st book in her new western Outlaw Mail Order Brides series. I have enjoyed Broday’s previous books book in a couple of her other series, and I am happy to say this was a wonderful start to another good series.

We meet our hero, Clay Colby, who is in the process with some of his outlaw friends, trying to rebuild a town (Devil’s Crossing) for them to start a new clean life.   Clay is waiting for the wagon train to arrive bringing him his mail order bride. When Clay meets his bride to be, he is shocked to see a young girl with her.

Talley Shannon is determined to protect herself, as well as the young blind girl under her care.   Tally is on the run from some bad guys, and marrying Clay will help her begin a new life.  Tally’s history is sad, as she escaped a terrible psychiatric hospital that she was falsely admitted by her greedy evil stepmother, after her father died.  Both she and the little girl, Violet were abused and tortured, but Tally is a strong and forceful woman. Tally explains that if he wants to marry her, he will have to accept Violet too.

What follows is both an exciting story line, and a sweet romance between two people with flawed pasts that will catch up with them.  Tally has problems with trust, especially with always being on the look out of the evil men still stalking her.  In time she realizes that Clay is a good man, who will do anything to protect her, and Violet, whom he begins to treat like his own daughter.  Though early on, Tally tries to run in fear of those following her, but Clay will prove to her that he is in this for the long run, and promises to protect her.   Slowly more people come to join their town, and help with the rebuilding process.  They all stick together to protect Tally and Violet. There were some great secondary characters they we got to meet, and learn to care for, such as the Januarys, Dr Mary, Rebel, and it was great to see Luke and Josie from Broday”s previous series.

What I loved the most was watching Tally fight her trust issues, and allow herself to fall in love with Clay. Violet, though struggling with her blindness, was a treasure, who became more self sufficient with the those in town who loved her.   Clay’s dog Bullet was a perfect companion for Violet, and protective of them all.

The last half of the book was very exciting, as a few times they find themselves in dangerous situations, which will bring them face to face with the three evil men following Tally.  Another group of women who escaped the asylum were rescued by Clay and Tally, bringing some to their town.  When they stave off the bad men, and the nasty stepmother, they head home with good news.  Tally is free, and Clay receives amnesty, and a happy time for all.  But just when things begin to look good, a shocking surprise will come back to rear its ugly head, causing intense action and threats to their survival, with both Rebel and Bullet seriously injured.

Linda Broday has once again given us another wonderful new western historical series, with a fantastic group of characters, and a couple we fell in love with.  The Outlaw Mail Order Bride was an emotional, exciting, romantic story that played often with our emotions.

Tally followed Clay into his dugout. She liked the strong set of his jaw and broad shoulders. He gave the impression that wouldn’t give under a heavy load. The two-inch scar down his face and the revolver swinging from his lean hip suggested he’d seen trouble too many times to count. His dark hair sported a few silver stands at the temples and curled possessively over his collarless shirt like a gunslinger’s hand around his gun.
She scanned the dim interior of the dugout, not caring that it was part of the hillside. She loved the scent of the earth and the safety Devil’s Crossing represented. A stack of uncut leather laid in a corner, and pink and yellow flowers on the table added an unexpected homey feel.
This outlaw was already surprising her in a lot of ways. Tally motioned to the leather. “What do you make?”
“Saddles, harnesses, boots, you name it.” Clay flicked her a nervous smile. “I know this doesn’t look like much, but it’s only temporary. As soon as I can, you’ll have a real house.”
Her mouth tried to turn up in a return smile but her nerves wouldn’t let it. She sat at the table in the chair Clay pulled out for her. “Don’t say anything you don’t mean. I’ve been lied to enough.”
Sunlight cast his shadow across the plank floor. “Look, Tally Shannon, I never waste words and what I say you can count on. I want something better for you, and already have the land picked out.”
Tally Shannon cleared her throat. “I have some things to ask of you, Clay. Refusal of any will be a deal-breaker.”
“Sounds fair enough. I’m sure you won’t need anything too difficult.”
“I’ll help build your town, share your bed, and raise your children.” She hardened her gaze. “In return, you promise never to put me back in the asylum and you’ll fight anyone who tries. Also extend that promise to Violet and if anything should happen to me, you’ll raise the child. You’ll never collect the reward that’s offered for me and I’ll never collect yours.” She paused before adding. “One last thing—you’ll release me next spring if this marriage doesn’t work.”
Clay brushed his fingers across her cheek that carried the mark. “You have my word on every stipulation.” His gaze shifted to the gun on her hip and she thought she saw admiration and some intimidation. “I only have one simple request. You have to promise never to shoot me, no matter how mad you get.”
“That depends on what you what do.” She leaned close, putting her lips next to his ear. “Hurt Violet and I’ll kill you in a heartbeat.”
He chuckled softly. “Trust me, I’d never be fool enough to cross you. Nor will I ever cause that little girl grief. That’s a vow I’ll never break.”
“Then we’re clear.” She straightened in her chair.
Clay leaned forward and lifted a tendril of hair, rubbed it between his thumb and forefinger. “Are you crazy, Tally?”
She allowed a smile. “Some would say that and at times I wonder. Back in Deliverance Canyon, I’d often wake in the dead of night and stand in the moonlight, letting the breeze brush my face. I needed the reassurance that I wasn’t back in that hellhole.”
“Do you mind if I ask why you were put there?”
“My stepmother put me there to get rid of me so she could steal what was mine. She told them that I was a sexual deviant and preyed on children.” She hated her strained voice.
“I can tell you’re not. I assume she had a ruthless plan.”
Tally’s voice turned cold and hardened. “When my father died, he had quite a large estate that included land, money, and other possessions. He left everything to me which angered my stepmother. She put something in my food that made me deathly ill and unable to fight her or speak. Some men loaded me into a wagon and Lucinda drove me to the Creedmore Lunatic Asylum.”
“I’ve heard of the place. Most never escape—except in a coffin. You were lucky, Tally.”
“A fierce determination helps. I was there a year and suffered—” her voice broke. She forced calm and continued. “Crimes you couldn’t imagine. But it only strengthened my resolve. I watched and waited for the right opportunity and when it came, I took it. Five of us broke out that moonless night. I’ve been back several times, once recently, for others like me.”
“Why do they want to imprison perfectly healthy women? What do they gain?”
“Money. Families pay a good deal to get rid of who they want. Men are getting rich off them and it’s become a big rotten business.” She watched his eyes darken, his anger build.
He let her strand of hair fall from his fingers. “Why was Violet there?” he asked, his voice tight.
“Her parents thought raising a blind child too much trouble.”
“Dear God! Such fools.” Clay rose to stand at the thick window.
She didn’t know what the tall, broad-shouldered outlaw was staring at, but the muscles of his jaw clenched tight, speaking of deep anger. He might convince himself that he was through dispensing justice but she could see that it continued to burn.
Could such a man love her?
An ache filled Tally. Could he make a little room in his heart for her?
She bit back a sob that tried to escape. Would she ever find someone who loved her fully and completely? Or would she have to settle for less as she’d always done? She was weary of settling. She wanted to be all of someone’s world, not just a part. She yearned to fill a man’s heart so full that his love for her spilled out all over the place.

Sandy’s REVIEW: VENGEANCE ROAD is the second instalment in Christine Feehan’s contemporary, adult TORPEDO INK slighty-paranormal, erotic romance series focusing on the men and women of the Torpedo Ink MC. This is Breezy Simmons, and Torpedo Ink MC vice president Lyov ‘Steele’ Russak’s story line. VENGEANCE ROAD can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous instalment is revealed where necessary. The TORPEDO INK series is a spin-off from the author’s SEA HAVEN SERIES but you do not have to have read the original series to follow Torpedo Ink.

NOTE: Most of the characters including Torpedo Ink club president Victor ‘Czar’ Prakenski, and his wife Blythe Daniels were introduced in the final instalment of the author’s Sea Haven Series BOUND TOGETHER.

WARNING: VENGEANCE ROAD contains scenes, and makes reference to graphic violence, rape, murder, torture, child prostitution, and abuse against children, women and men, and therefore, may not be suitable for all readers.

SOME BACKGROUND: At the tender age of ten years old, Victor ‘Czar’ Prakenski set about to save and rescue over three hundred children from one of four Russian child sex-slave operations but in the end only eighteen survived. The Torpedo Ink series focuses on the survivors: their stories, their history, and their happily ever afters.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Steele and Breezy) VENGEANCE ROAD follows the second chance romance between Breezy Simmons, and Torpedo Ink MC vice president Lyov ‘Steele’ Russak. Four years earlier Lyov ‘Steele’ Russak went undercover with the Swords MC where he met and fell for Breezy Simmons, the daughter of the Swords MC President. Things went from bad to worse when secrets were revealed, and Steele maliciously pushed Breezy out of his life. Fast forward to present day wherein Breezy is desperate for Steele and Torpedo Ink MC help, help she knows will permanently bring Steele back into her life. What ensues is the rebuilding relationship and romance between Steele and Breezy, and the potential fall-out as Breezy is unable to come to terms between the man that she loves, and the man who pushed her out of his life.

Steele is a natural healer but like all of the Russian sex-slave survivors, Steele is a trained assassin; a stone-cold killer who isn’t afraid of protecting the people he loves. When Breezy’s past begins to spiral out of control threatening everything and everyone she loves, Steele and his Torpedo Ink family make it their priority to save one of their own.

The relationship between Breezy and Steele is one of second chances; a rekindling romance that struggles with sins of the past, and Steele’s treatment of our heroine three years earlier. Steele struggles with the memories of his time spent as a child sex-slave for the Russian mob, memories that continue to haunt our story line (anti) hero. The $ex scenes are intimate, erotic, aggressive and intense.

There is a large ensemble cast of colorful and charismatic secondary and supporting characters-Steele’s Torpedo Ink family- a family of survivors who have endured years of torture, rape, abuse and an education in the world of the deviant and sick.

The world building continues to focus on the years of abuse suffered at the hands of the Russian mob: the recovery and revenge; the betrayal and ramifications; the heart break, and damage caused to a group of children (now adults) and their struggle to accept, grieve and move forward with lives. As I have stated before in many of my reviews, I have remarked on the author’s increasing violent story lines and abuse against women and children but in the case of the Torpedo Ink series, the violence is part of their history and lives-ingrained and imbedded –into their very existence. The story line heroes are not the perpetrators of the violence and abuse against the women they love but are the saviors and salvation of those who suffered years before.

VENGEANCE ROAD is a heart breaking, painful and graphic story line of abuse and betrayal; vengeance and retribution. The characters are animated, broken but recovering; the romance is hard and impassioned. Christine Feehan pulls the reader into the dark and gritty world of Torpedo Ink.

Barb’s REVIEW:

Vengeance Road by Christine Feehan is the 2nd book in her Torpedo Ink series.  Just a brief refresher for this series:  Blythe marrying Viktor (Czar) was the end of the Sea Haven series.  Czar is the president of Torpedo Ink, and together with the men and women he brought with him to Sea Haven and Blythe, they have built their Torpedo Ink MC club in Casper, which is close to Sea Haven.  Each of these members have suffered terrible abuse in their childhoods in Russia, being forced to all become lethal assassins; each still very much trying to find the light inside their darkness.  They are all determined to protect each other, and also work secretly to save children they have become part of human trafficking, as well as pedophiles.

In Vengeance Road, we meet our heroine, Breezy (Bree) Simmons, who is desperate to find the man who broke her heart three years ago.  She grew up in a MC club, being treated badly by her father and brother; and now three years after she left, the past has come back to rear its ugly head.  Steele, our hero, is the Vice President of Torpedo Ink, and when he sees Breezy come to their club, leaving an envelope, he is determined to get her back, and this time keep her.  He and his teammates, who are loyal to each other, find and bring Breezy back, and the information she brings alerts the whole team, especially Steele, as he has never stopped loving Bree, and now he has a son.  A son who has been kidnapped by Bree’s evil father, who is leader of the local Swords MC.

Bree is desperate to get her son back, but she is a mess, since she wants nothing to do with MC gangs.  Steele, at first angry about her not telling him about their son, knows that it was his fault that she left, since he was the one who pushed her away.  He wanted to save her from the abuse she took from her father, and the Swords gang, but in doing so, realized he loved her and wanted her back.

What follows is an exciting adventure with Steele, Bree and the team working together to find their son, and eliminate the evil Swords.  In a short time, especially with Steele determined to win Bree back, the romance between them rekindles and the chemistry is sizzling. Steele is very dominant, and unbending, but he begins to see that Bree  is now a stronger person, and he eventually will confront his demons by telling her about his horrific childhood.    Bree knows she still loves Steele, but is afraid to get back into the club life, even though she learns over time that Torpedo Ink is not like other clubs.  They take care and protect their own, and work toward helping others who has suffered.

It is important to note that this is a very violent story, as well as being very exciting. The men of Torpedo Ink will do anything they can to find information to help find the boy, which means excessive torture; but we do know how much they suffered, and live with those dark memories.  I love all the members of the Torpedo Ink family, including the female members(Lana & Alena), and the ladies who become part of them (Blythe, Anya and now Bree)

The story does have a lot of sex scenes, as Bree and Steele were very steamy and great together .

Vengeance Road is a dark romantic story, that is also very emotional, as we continue to learn through the eyes of the members what they had to endure in Russia.  I look forward to future books in this series,   where we will get to meet the other members of the team, as they find their way out of the darkness to the light of love. Despite the dark violent story, Vengeance Road was a great read, exciting, sexy,  with a fabulous group of secondary characters.

Breezy Simmons leaned against her pickup for a moment, staring at the large building that housed the Torpedo Ink Motorcycle Club. Her heart beat so hard in her chest she was afraid she might vomit. The world spun uncontrollably, and she quickly leaned down, putting her head between her legs, drawing in great gulps of air. She caught a glimpse of two men on the other side of the compound as her head went toward the asphalt, and she didn’t recognize either of them. That made her pounding heart sink.
She couldn’t possibly have the wrong club. This had to be them. She was running out of time and options. She slowly righted herself and took another cautious look around. The two men stared at her from across the parking lot. She was careful not to look at them too long. She didn’t want them coming anywhere near her. She needed to get in and out very fast.
The Torpedo Ink compound was extremely large and had a high chain-link fence surrounding it. There was even razor wire up on top of the fence, making the place look like a fortress. The rolling gates were wide open, and she’d driven her truck right inside, parking as close to the clubhouse as possible. She deliberately left the door to her beat-up pickup open and the engine running. Hopefully, no one recognized her, and she could get in and out of the building quickly, once she asserted these were the right people, the ones she was looking for.
In the early morning hours, the club was just beginning to stir. Clearly, they’d partied hard over the weekend. In the enormous side yard, the one with the beautiful ocean view, she could see embers in fire pits glowing as the breeze stirred them up. A man with his back to her watered them down with a hose. He wore a tight tee and jeans, but no colors. Still, she knew this was the home of the club that called itself Torpedo Ink. She sent up a silent prayer that this was the one she’d been looking for.
There were empty bottles strewn around the grass and on the ground to the side of the building in the wide expanse of open field. Cars, motorcycles and trucks were scattered around the parking lot, although no one parked where the club did. Their motorcycles were lined up neatly and a prospect watched over them. He sat on the curb looking at her. She was parked too close to the precious bikes, but she didn’t care—other than it had drawn the attention of the prospect.
Another long line of motorcycles was parked a short distance down from the clubhouse and a prospect watched over those bikes as well. He looked at her without much interest, which indicated to her that these bikes belonged to a visiting club. He wasn’t as interested in protecting the grounds as the one closest to the clubhouse.
She had to get this over with. Just being in such close proximity to an MC made her sick. The fact that she knew what went on at the party made her even sicker. That this might be his club, and she had to risk running into him, made all that far worse.
Breezy squared her shoulders, dragged the envelope off the seat and turned all in one motion. The prospect was on his feet. If she knew for certain this was the right club, she would have thrust the letter into his hands and left, but she was guessing from a process of elimination.
She purposely hadn’t kept track of him, especially when she’d heard, a year after she’d left, that eighteen members of the Swords had set up the international president for assassination and had, allegedly, wiped out a number of members and then disappeared. She knew who those eighteen members were immediately and knowing them, she knew it was possible when others said it wasn’t. She’d run as far from the life as she could and now she was pulled right back in.

REVIEW:YOU WILL SUFFER is the third instalment in Alexandra Ivy’s contemporary, adult THE AGENCY romantic, suspense series. This is retired FBI Agent Nate Marcel, and attorney Ellie Guthrie’s story line. YOU WILL SUFFER can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Ellie and Nate) as well as first person (murderer) YOU WILL SUFFER follows the search for a killer(s). With a recent spate of murders and disappearances in the small town of Curry Oklahoma, local attorney Ellie, and her neighbour retired FBI agent Nate Marcel begin an investigation of their own only to find themselves in the line of fire. In the hopes of trying to connect the pieces of the growing puzzle, Ellie and Nate will soon learn about the mysterious past of Curry Oklahoma, and a group of well-connected and prominent people whose secrets are about to be revealed. What ensues is the building relationship between Nate and Ellie, and the fall-out as our couple’s investigation begins to reveal a dark and dangerous past.

YOU WILL SUFFER is a story of betrayal and vengeance; secrets and lies; power, fear, and control; mystery and suspense. A killer is on the loose in Curry Oklahoma, a killer who is determined to destroy those who destroyed their life. More suspense thriller than romance, YOU WILL SUFFER focuses on the clues-both the past and the present-and the victims whose ties to one another reveal a dark, sordid and dangerous history, a history that seeks revenge for sins of the father, and sins of the past. The cleverly written premise is intriguing and intense; the colorful supporting characters are numerous ; the romance is secondary to the overall premise
