Review:

The Secret Life of Mac by Melinda Metz is a cute fun story about a cat, who is also known as a matchmaker.  We meet Mac (MacGyver) from the start, as he lives with Jamie and David and a dog, he loves to tease.  Jamie and David, whom Mac previously brought together, are going on their honeymoon, and her cousin Briony has come to stay for the month to care for Mac and the dog.

Briony is our heroine in this story, as we learn that she came to help out Jamie, after she fainted at her wedding ceremony, and left the groom at the altar.  Briony feels guilty about what she did to her fiancée, but her anxiety attacks confirm that perhaps it wasn’t meant to be. She does fall in love with Mac and Dioggy (the dog), and finds herself constantly looking for Mac, who is also an escape artist.

Nate, our hero, manages a local retirement community (The Gardens), and we get to meet many of the residents and employees throughout the story.  Mac of course, senses that he needs to help out with the residents of the home, and with the little gifts he pickpockets, help bring Briony and Nate together, not to mention some other people at The Gardens.

What follows is a cute romance, with a bit wild story with a little mystery as to who is sabotaging the home, with Nate beside himself with things going wrong.  The secondary characters were all very good. Nate and Briony were great together, as you found yourself rooting for them; even though her ex-fiancée (who actually was a good guy) shows up, but all turned out good.  The resolution to the mystery turned out to be a surprise, though I did guess who the saboteur was, but not who the partner was.

As much as I liked all the characters, I absolutely loved Mac; who to me was the star of the show.  I will end this review with a short blurb from the description that says it all…. ‘MacGyver is on the case. And this time, he’s not pussyfooting around . . .’ . If you enjoy cute stories featuring animals, a appealing cozy romance,  then look no further than The Secret Life of Mac.  It was a fun quick read.

Across The Stars by Lauren Smith & Noah Chinn -a Review

Across The Stars by Lauren Smith & Noah Chinn -a Review

Description:
She’s one of the last free humans. On the run… And running out of time.

Laina Roberts has been on the run for ten years, a freeborn human hiding from the cyborgs of the Silver Legion who now controls what’s left of humanity. Moving secretly from planet to planet and space station to space station makes for a damn lonely life—and don’t even get her started on how long it’s been since she last had sex. Sometimes she thinks it might be worth turning herself in to the cyborgs just to end the loneliness. That is, until she’s caught!

Captured by a hot-as-hell Legion officer, the cyborg Ronan makes her think being probed by him might not be so bad. But becoming a cyborg’s slave—sex or otherwise—isn’t high on her to-do list. She doesn’t trust him and doesn’t understand his constant questions about Earth—especially those about her long-dead relatives. Ronan can just kiss her ass—oh yes, please—because she is not going to let her desires or his incredibly perfect body weaken her resolve. She now has a new mission, to convince the cyborgs and the rest of the galaxy that all Terrans, humans and synthetic humans like cyborgs, have the right to be free.

If only he didn’t make her feel like melting into his arms and never leaving. Being captured by a cyborg might not be so bad after all…

Review:

Across the Stars by Lauren Smith & Noah Chinn is the 1st book in their Cyborg Genesis series.  I wasn’t sure what to expect in this sci-fi storyline, as I have recently read a few Sci/Fantasy books, and I am happy to say I really enjoyed Across the Stars

Laina Roberts, our heroine, is possibly the last human (freeborn), since the destruction of earth hundreds of years ago.  Laina has been in hiding for 10 years, constantly changing planets, working on space stations masquerading as another race. If she is caught, she will be sent away to live as a slave. But Laina’s luck is about to end, as the space station she is working on, is being searched for a freeborn, and the Silver Legion (cyborgs) are the best at what they do.

Ronan, the cyborg lead officer, captures Laina and forces her aboard the Silver Legion.  Though he is a cyborg, Ronan is one hot hunk, and despite his arrogance, Laina finds herself deeply attracted to him; he is the enemy and she cannot control her lustful feelings.  Ronan also finds himself unusually attracted to Laina, but tries to fight off those feelings.  Many of the men on the Silver Legion, resent the freeborn, and this will cause problems aboard the ship, causing danger for Laina.  But it will be Ronan who will come her rescue, as well as the doctor Val, who also recognizes something different in Laina.

What follows is a complex and interesting world building that will revolve around various different races, with the cyborgs protecting all.  Once the doctor realizes that Laina is very important to them, those aboard the Silver Legion begin to change their feelings of freeborn, as they want the chance to live more normal lives.  Though some of the men hate freeborns, and once again Laina finds herself in danger.

Laina was a great heroine; smart, strong, savvy and independent. I loved her and Ronan together, especially when they succumbed to their lustful feelings, which cemented their relationship and working together. I also enjoyed Laina new found friendship with Val (the doctor who realizes how important she is) and Alanna (top female officer) , who I do look forward to in future books if they get their own story.  The other secondary characters were very well done.

Without telling too much more, as I do not want to spoil things, the story line moving forward will center on bringing the races together to bring equality, as well as use Laina’s ability and her access to the ark to help find a way to bring them all together similar to earth.  The important factor when starting this book is there are a lot of details such as the various races, planets & environments are explored, and we meet many new characters; in Sci-Fi or Fantasy that is always the norm.  So if it feels a bit slow early on, you need to stay with it, as it becomes a fascinating ride.

Across the Stars was a great read, wonderful characters, excellent story line and so much more to come in future books.  We need to know more about the ark, and what Ronan , Laina and their group will do to bring back unity.  Lauren Smith and Noah Chinn have created a wonderful new series, which I look forward to reading more about.

REVIEW: FLARE UP is the sixth instalment in Shannon Stacey’s contemporary, adult BOSTON FIRE erotic, romance series focusing on Boston’s first responders. This is fire fighter Grant Cutter, and Wren Everett’s story line. FLARE UP can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Grant and Wren) FLARE UP follows the rekindling romance and relationship between fire fighter Grant Cutter and Wren Everett. Five months earlier Grant’s life was destroyed when the woman he loved disappeared without a trace. Fast forward to present day wherein Grant Cutter will come face to face with his past as the crew from Engine 59 respond to an apartment fire. Enter Wren Everett, the woman who broke our hero’s heart but a woman with secrets that are about to be exposed. What ensues is the second chance romance between Grant and Wren, and the potential fall-out as Wren’s past is targeting the people she loves including the man she destroyed months before.

Wren Everett never thought her past would connect with her present but focusing on the protection of the people she loved Wren bolted, but in doing so, broke the heart of someone close. Grant Cutter never got over the betrayal of Wren’s disappearance but discovering our heroine at the scene of a fire, Grant’s emotions went into overdrive thinking he could have lost her, again.

The relationship between Grant and Wren is one of second chances; a rekindling romance destroyed by threats and fears, secrets and sins. The premise is engaging and impassioned; the characters are energetic and spirited; the romance is sensual and encouraging.

Most of the previous story line couples and characters play secondary and supporting roles: Lydia and Aidan, Rick Gulloti, Chris, Danny Walsh, Jamie and Scott, Gavin and Cait, Derek and Olivia, as well as Kincaid Pub owner Tommy Kincaid. We are introduced to Wren’s employers Mr. and Mrs. Belostosky, as well as Cait’s mother Patty.

FLARE UP is a story of family, friendships, betrayal and love. The premise is intriguing and exciting; the characters are fun, sassy and friendly; the romance is passionate and intense. FLARE UP is a welcome addition to Shannon Stacey’s BOSTON FIRE.

“I’m pretty sure I picked up a tail on the way back,” Leighton said quietly into his phone. He was in the bathroom of the Presidential Suite with the shower running. He’d done a scan for bugs and other electronics and was certain he wasn’t being listened to, but he was still taking extra precautions. Right now more than ever they had to be careful.
“Did you get a good look?” Colt asked.
“No. Just a feeling I’ve had before. Could be nothing but my instinct tells me otherwise. And I didn’t get that feeling until I got close to the actual casino.”
“Well, you did go out with Kuznetsov’s niece. He or someone who works for him could be keeping an eye on you. But…do you need to pull out?” Colt asked, his tone deadly serious.
“I think if my cover was blown, I’d know.” He’d already thought about it and he wanted to stay put. “I don’t want to pull out yet. I want to scout the casino floor again at least one more night, see what we can pick up on cameras. Gage still hasn’t completely infiltrated their system.” And Leighton didn’t think Kuznetsov would stop running women simply because his niece had stumbled onto a small portion of his operation. No, the asshole would just get smarter about it. Kuznetsov liked money too much.
“All right. We’ve all got your back regardless. And if something happens, I have no doubt you’ll be able to fight your way out.”
Leighton half laughed. “Glad you’ve got so much faith in me.”
“So how was lunch with her? Did you get a better feel for her?”
Leighton wasn’t certain how to answer that. He decided to go with the truth, however. “I really like her.”
Colt was silent for a long moment. “Like her, like her? Or…”
“Like her, like her.”
“You’re serious.” Colt’s tone was neutral.
“Yeah. I kissed her. And I can tell myself that it was all part of the job but I’d be lying. You have a right to know. I’m not going to screw things up but I am seriously attracted to this woman. It took me by surprise. I…didn’t expect any of this. Flat out, I just like her. After hearing the recording today, it seems pretty clear she’s not involved with her uncle’s operation. And she volunteers at a suicide hotline.” He felt like a fool for letting his emotions get entangled but he wasn’t a damn robot, and Lucy Carreras had gotten under his skin.
Colt let out a rough sigh. “This isn’t the end of the world. Maybe it’s a good thing. Because we might need to use her as an asset.”
Leighton’s jaw tightened. He didn’t like the thought of using Lucy at all or even thinking of her as an asset. He understood this op was about more than him and his wants and needs, but that didn’t mean he had to like it. Lucy was more than an asset.

REVIEW: TAKE ME AGAIN is the first instalment in Carly Phillips’ contemporary, adult THE KNIGHT BROTHERS erotic, romance series focusing on the Knight siblings. This is twenty-six year old Sebastian Knight, and twenty-four year old, forensic accountant Ashley Easton’s story line.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Sebastian and Ashley) TAKE ME AGAIN follows the rekindling relationship between former step-siblings, twenty-six year old Sebastian Knight, and twenty-four year old, forensic accountant Ashley Easton. Upon the recent death of his brother Ethan’s wife Amanda, Sebastian came face to face with his past, a woman he hasn’t stopped loving but a woman who is unable to forgive him for sins long ago. Sent away at the age of sixteen, and never to return, Ashley knew her place was with the Knight family, at a time when they needed her, the most, so leaving England, Ashley knew what awaited her upon her return. What ensues is the rekindling relationship between Ashley and Sebastian, and the potential fall-out as Ashley’s time in America draws to a close.

Meanwhile, Knight Time Technology, the family owned business, is struggling under a potential disaster. Hoping to uncover the truth, Ethan Knight sends Sebastian and Ashley , well aware of their formidable history, to California in an effort to stop the fall-out and liability of possible fraud.

The relationship between Sebastian and Ashley is a second chance, rekindling romance that was all but destroyed by overzealous reactions, and hormonal teens. Ashley has never forgiven Sebastian for what transpired but Ashley is not the innocent in the events of the past. The palpable sexual attraction is immediate and strong, and does not go unnoticed by the Knight family. The $ex scenes are passionate, erotic and intense without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

We are introduced to the Knight siblings: oldest brother Ethan; former championship skier Parker, and twenty-four year old sister Sierra, as well as Ashley’s former boyfriend Jonathan Davies.

The world building reveals the Knight family dynamics, and the fractured relationship between Sebastian and the siblings he so dearly loves.

TAKE ME AGAIN is a story of family, friendship, betrayal and loss. The premise is revealing and captivating; the characters are colorful, charismatic and wounded; the romance is heavy and hot. TAKE ME AGAIN is a great start to a fantastic new series by Carly Phillips.

Though she and Sebastian had been sharing a suite in California, the fact was, they lived in separate apartments in New York. No matter what she felt for him, London, her job, and her life awaited her. The sooner they got used to being apart the better.
“I’m tired,” she said. “I didn’t rest much on the flight, and we have to be up early tomorrow to meet with Ethan.”
His grin turned into a frown. “Why do I get the feeling you’re pulling away?”
She rubbed her hands over her arms and turned away, not wanting to face him. It was one thing to pull back, another to look him in the eye while doing it. Not when all she really wanted to do was throw herself into his arms. But she lived in reality. So here they were.
“Hey.” He grasped her and turned her around. “I have a question for you.”
“Okay…” she said warily.
“Why are you still here?”
“What?” She hadn’t anticipated that question.
“Why are you still here, in New York? You said you came for Ethan, but when he sent you away, you came with me. And now we’ve wrapped things up. We’re talking to Ethan in the morning. Is your flight home booked?” As he spoke, his hands on her forearms felt like a brand, a reminder that she belonged here, with him.
And she couldn’t let that sway her. Although she’d put work out of her mind, she had checked in with her bosses while she was away, assured them she was returning. She’d bought herself another week, that was it. They understood her leave of absence but wanted her back as soon as possible.
“I’ll take your silence to be a no,” Sebastian said, releasing her arms. “Which brings me back to why? Do you still want to be here? Or are you avoiding Mr. Perfectly Nice?”
She didn’t want to talk about any of this. She still had a week left, and in that time, Ethan would need her once he found out about Mandy’s cheating. Or was that just an excuse? Because she wasn’t ready to leave Sebastian, her conscience asked her.
She glared at him. “Why are you pushing me so hard just because I said I was tired?” she asked, more annoyed with herself but taking it out on him.
“Because of what we shared in California. Because of what we feel for each other, even if you’re not ready to admit it. And because I want to know.”

Wrong Bed, Right Roommate by Rebecca Brooks – a Review

Wrong Bed, Right Roommate by Rebecca Brooks – a Review

Amazon / B&N / Kobo / BAM / iTunes / Google Play

Description:
It’s not every day you wake up to a stranger getting into your bed.
Only, he isn’t a stranger at all, he’s my best friend’s hot older brother…and apparently my new roommate.
Having him in my space, driving me crazy, isn’t a problem at all. Nope.
All I need to do is keep control of the situation…

But that’s easier said than done.
Shawn Lassiter is the kind of distraction I don’t need.
First he accidentally gets into my bed, half-naked, the night before my first day at my new job.
Hello, muscles and tattoos!
Then he’s there, in nothing but a towel, making me coffee in the morning.
It’s more than any girl can resist. Right?
But Shawn is off-limits, even if his eyes are saying differently.

Years ago, back when I still had my crush, he destroyed friendships with his reckless playboy antics.
There’s no way I’m touching those perfectly formed abs now. I don’t care how nice and responsible he’s acting.
I don’t want a boyfriend anyway. That’s what my trusty vibrator is for.
I’m the smart girl—the glasses-wearing, book-reading workaholic. I can totally do this.
After all, it’s only for two and a half months.
I’ll be on my best behavior…even if Shawn isn’t.

Review:

Wrong Bed, Right Roommate begins with Jessie having finally landed her dream job, while her life-long best friend, Talia, is leaving the country for a few months to dance in London.  Jessie can’t help but worry about the rent, but Talia has assured her that she will find a tenant to take over for the few months she will be gone.  Jessie never expected that Shawn, Talia’s hot brother, who also has a bit of a sordid past, would be the tenant.  To say that Jessie and Shawn were both shocked to see each other is a bit of an understatement.  Shawn looks just like how Jessie remembers him:  muscled and hot.  Jessie definitely doesn’t look the way Shawn remembered her.  Seems she’s matured in all the right ways.

As the two of them navigate being roommates, the attraction is there, and it’s strong, but Jessie knows that Talia would have a hissy fit if the two of them ever hooked up.  After all, Shawn did cost his sister a friend or two back in the day by messing around with them and then dropping them like a hot potato when someone else piqued his interest.  Shawn knows that Jessie is off limits due to the aforementioned ‘costing his sister her friends’, but he has acknowledged his past bad behavior and is truly trying to be a better person.   When the two of them finally hook up, they decide it can never happen again………..until it does.  After all, Talia is out of the country, so who will ever know?   Funny that………

Wrong Bed, Right Roomate is a nicely written romance, and a first I’ve read by this author.  Jessie is loyal, almost to a fault, and very driven.  Shawn had always been the polar opposite of Jessie.  When things got tough for him, he ran.  Always.  However, when he and Jessie are together, he finds himself wanting more out of life and out of himself.  He’s tired of always being a disappointment to his family, and to himself.  When Talia ends up coming back a little early and surprising them, things do not go well.  All of them, Talia included, have to figure out what’s important and look at things the way they are now, and not clouded by the past.  What transpires will make your heart smile and leave you cheering.  As I said before, this is the first I’ve read by this author, but hopefully, won’t be the last.  Well done, Rebecca Brooks!
