Review:

Never Kiss a Scott by Lauren Smith is a very well written romantic tale in the historic romance genre. I don’t do spoilers and it would be a true sin to spoil this for you. So, let me just give you the gist of the setup and tell you what I loved about this marvelous tale.

If you’ve read this series, you may find some of the characters familiar, but it can be read as a stand alone as well. The set up I’m giving you is in no way as interesting or as exciting as the book…it must be read to be enjoyed, it’s a marvelous conversation and sets up the whole adventurous tale.

The story begins in Hampshire, June 1821. Joanna Lennox, sister of Ashton Lennox (one of the peers in the League of Rogues), is reading in the library of their home and it’s about midnight. She looks up and is startled to find a tall handsome man in the doorway of the library. She doesn’t recognize him as one of her brother’s friends but remains calm and finds out he’s Brock, one of the three brothers of Lady Melbourne. Ashton is about to marry Lady Rosalind Melbourne. After some time, he kisses her and it’s wonderous. Then he proceeds to tie her up with a ribbon and a small gag while he and his brothers steal their sister away and back to Scotland.

As I said earlier, this whole scene is much more interesting and exciting and must be read to be fully enjoyed. It’s one of my favorite parts of the story. As you can see, it starts off with a bang and continues to be exciting and wonderfully romantic from that point on. Yes, there are a few villains, but you need to discover them for yourself. It’s part of the fun.

I fell totally in love with the lead characters in this book. Joanna is what I hope I would have been like, had I lived in this period. She’s intelligent, lovely, and adventurous. Brock is my dream come true. Tall, handsome, charming, honorable, and above all, a Scot. Yes, I know. I seem to fall in love with the men in the books I like…well, I’ve never heard of a limit on book boyfriends, but I digress.

You must have a copy of this story and settle in for an exciting night’s read. I promise, you won’t regret it It’s a powerful and exciting add to this already marvelous series.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date April 10, 2019

The perfect love story for those who enjoy fiercely loyal and insanely sexy alpha heroes, smart, sassy heroines, strong family bonds, bikers, babies, and more!

Can true love strike twice in one lifetime?
Josie Beckley refuses to believe there is a limit on happiness. A decade after she escaped her abusive parents and lost touch with her siblings, the death of her husband leaves her and her son homeless. But Josie has never been one to wallow in sadness, and when she takes a chance on reconnecting with her siblings, a sinfully handsome bright light from her past shows up and offers to help her find a way out of the darkness.

Most people wouldn’t see Jed Moon as someone to look up to. He’s been in and out of jail and has lived a less-than-stellar lifestyle. But years ago one woman saw through his bullshit, and he’s never forgotten her. Now she’s back in his life, and as a prospect for the Dark Knights motorcycle club, Jed promises to keep an eye on the sassy, sexy single mother who has never stopped lighting his fantasies on fire.

Jed and Josie’s combustible connection is stronger than ever. Having Josie and her son in his life brings out all of Jed’s protective instincts-and visions of a future he never imagined having. But when a shocking revelation knocks the insatiable lovers to their knees, it forces them to make choices that could change their lives forever.

REVIEW: MAD ABOUT MOON is the fifth instalment in Melissa Foster’s contemporary, adult THE WHISKEYS erotic, romance series focusing on the Whiskey family and friends of Peaceful Harbor. This is twenty-eight year old, bartender/mechanic Jed Moon, and twenty-four year old, single mother Josie Beckley’s story line. MAD ABOUT MOON can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous instalment is revealed where necessary but I recommend reading the series in order for back story and cohesion involving our story line heroine. The Whiskeys series is a spin off from the author’s Bradens of Peaceful Harbor. There is a slight MC biker theme throughout the series as the Whiskeys are part of the local Dark Knights MC, and Jed Moon is their latest prospect. Josie is Sarah (Wicked Whiskey Love) and Scott Beckley’s younger sister.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Josie and Jed) MAD ABOUT MOON follows the rekindling relationship and romance between twenty-eight year old, bartender/mechanic Jed Moon, and twenty-four year old, single mother Josie Beckley. Approximately six years earlier, Jed Moon met seventeen year old Josie Beckley, and it was instant love for our story line hero. A one-night stand ended when Jed discovered our heroine’s age, and in the ensuing years neither one forgot about that night. Fast forward to present day wherein Josie, a now widowed mother of one, struggles to reacquaint herself with the family she believes left her behind. What ensues is the rebuilding friendship and growing love between Josie and Moon, and the potential fall-out as Josie continues to struggle with what was, and what may be.

Both Jed and Josie’s pasts, and their histories are dark and heart breaking. At thirteen years of age, Josie found herself alone with an abusive father when her brother and sister ran without looking back. Jed Moon struggled to keep his family together but when his father died, his alcoholic mother destroyed what as left of his heart and his love.

The relationship between Josie and Jed is one of second chances; a rekindling friendship that grows into something more. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate, without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

There is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters including Josie’s son Hail: Dr. Wayne ‘Bones’ Whiskey, and Jed’s sister Sarah, and her children Bradley and Lila (Wicked Whiskey Love #4): Josie and Sarah’s brother Scott Beckley; Special Forces Veteran Bullet Whiskey and Finlay Wilson (Driving Whiskey Wild #3), biker/mechanic Bear Whiskey and his wife (Jed’s sister) Crystal (Truly, Madly, Whiskey 2); Bones’, Bullet & Bear’s sister Dixie as well as their parents Biggs and Wren (Red) Whiskey; Truman & Gemma (Tru Blue #1) ; Truman’s brothers and sister, Quincy, Lincoln and Kennedy; Ice Cream shop owner Penny Wilson; several members of the Dark Knights MC including Desmond ‘Diesel’ Black, Crow Burke, Charlie ‘Court’ Sharpe, Tomas ‘Tex’ Sharpe, as well as Dr. Jon Butterscotch; as well as the introduction of Crystal and Jed’s mother Pamela Moon.

The world building continues to focus on the friendships, family and support for the people of Peaceful Harbor. The conflict is limited, oft times limited to situations from the past: there is rarely a struggle with the relationship development.

MAD ABOUT MOON is a story of family and love; of friendship and support; of second chances and more. The premise is captivating and entertaining; the characters are colorful and energetic-Melissa’s story line children are delightful and adorable; the romance is seductive and intense. MAD ABOUT MOON is a wonderful read for the romantic in all of us.

The Patient One by Shelley Shepard Gray – a Review

The Patient One by Shelley Shepard Gray – a Review

Amazon / B&N / Kobo / iTunes / Google Play / BAM / Book Depository

Description:
When word had gotten out that Andy Warner had committed suicide, everyone in Walnut Creek, Ohio, had been shocked. For seven men and women in their twenties, some Amish, some Mennonite, and some English, each of whom had once counted his or herself as one of Andy’s best friends, it had been extremely painful.

And, maybe, a source of guilt.

Years have passed since they’d all been together last. Some of them got into trouble. A couple got into arguments. Eventually they all drifted apart. But even though none of them really saw each other anymore, there was a steadfast certainty that they’d always have each other’s backs—even when no one else did. Their bond was that strong…until Andy did the unthinkable.

Now the seven remaining friends, still reeling from Andy’s death, have vowed to look after each other again. As far as they’re concerned, it doesn’t matter that they’re now in their twenties and have drifted far apart. They need to connect again…for Andy.

Review:

The Patient One by Shelley Shepard Gray is the 1st book in her new Walnut Creek series. The Patient One was a nice story revolving around a group of friends who come together after the tragic suicide of one of their group.  However, the group went their own way for a number of years, hardly seeing each other, and now with the suicide, they each feel the guilt that they should have been around for their deceased friend.  Those who left Walnut Creek return and they are determined to unify their close friendship and help one another.  The mixed group of 7 men and women, are  Amish,  Mennonite, and English, but that never bothered them, as they all remain good friends.

The 7 friends each deal with their grief, but this story centers around John (Amish) and Marie (English) as they rekindle the attraction they had for each other.  John deals with his desire to become more English, and leave the Amish life.  He lets his family know, and they accept his desire, knowing that he will remain close to them, as they knew this was his desire  long ago.    Marie having moved back to Walnut Creek, learns later about John‘s decision and is very happy.  Together they will work on their future, as well as learn how to deal with the grief of losing their friend.   The other 5 members are close to John and Marie, and they all help support one another.

There was also a side story showing the friendship building between John’s 16 year old sister, Molly who due to an accident is confined to a wheel chair, and Danny, a local 17 year old boy.  Danny befriends Molly, who works part time at the library, and despite John’s negative reaction, their friendship grows.  This was a nice feature to see Danny bring out Molly to go out and enjoy her friends.  There was also another accident with some students which also bring about handling the loss of life.

The Patient One was a story of friendship, bonding, guilt, grief, love and struggling to deal with the emotions of tragedy.  I this was a nice simple story of life, and well written by Shelley Shepard Gray.

REVIEW: AT THE PLEASURE OF THE PRESIDENT is the fifth and final instalment in the  contemporary, adult THE PERFECT GENTLEMEN romantic, political suspense series, co-authored by Shayla Black and Lexi Blake, focusing on six friends –Gabe, Connor, Dax, Zach, Roman and Maddox. This is US President Zack Hayes, and Press Secretary Elizabeth Matthews’ storyline. AT THE PLEASURE OF THE PRESIDENT should not be read as a stand alone as it focuses on the culmination of several story lines, numerous intersecting plot points, and the investigation into the death of Maddox Crawford, and attempted take down of the US President.

SOME BACKGROUND: Following the mysterious airplane crash and subsequent death of their friend Maddox Crawford, the remaining friends Gabe Bond, Dax Spencer, Connor Sparks, Roman Calder and US president Zach Hayes find themselves searching for the truth that somehow involves the Russian mob and the deaths of a number of people connected to their group known as The Perfect Gentlemen. THE PERFECT GENTLEMEN series are their stories.

Told from several third person perspectives including Zack and Elizabeth, AT THE PLEASURE OF THE PRESIDENT follows the search for the truth. When news of a potential assassination plot against President Hayes surfaces on the Dark Web, the Perfect Gentlemen, Zack’s best friends from childhood and school, circle the wagons to uncover the truth. From betrayal to vengeance, conspiracy to espionage, misinformation and issues of trust, everyone is suspect, and no one is safe as the investigation reveals someone close to the US President may be involved.

Zack Hayes is a widower who has fallen in love with Elizabeth Matthews but the energy in the White House is dangerous and dark. Issues of trust turn friends against friends, brother versus brother, lovers into strangers. Doubt and uncertainty breed bitter bedfellows; malevolence and distrust push the friendships to the point of spiralling out of control. Secrets are revealed; heart break is certain; international conspiracies take flight and win.

AT THE PLEASURE OF THE PRESIDENT is a story focusing on the powerful elite; on the political machinations of two countries quietly (or not so quietly) at war with one another, a war that has been playing out for too many years. The premise is intriguing, captivating, and thought provoking; the romance is passionate and emotional; the characters are engaging, dramatic and edgy. THE PERFECT GENTLEMEN series is a must read for fans of drama, intrigue, romance and love.

Liz’s hands shook as she turned the lock, shutting herself alone in the library with Zack. This was likely the single stupidest thing she’d ever done, but after years of pining for and being in love with him, she couldn’t walk away without knowing how a night with him would feel.
She should be in her bed right now, trying to find sleep. But she’d seen the light on and known he’d be here. Like a freaking moth to a flame, she’d found herself leaving the safety of her bedroom and walking right into the predator’s den.
Trembling, she turned now and looked at the only man she’d ever truly loved. He needed her tonight. She saw it in his stare, in the way he clenched his fists at his sides. How much character and willpower had it taken him to allow her this choice? She admired him even more for finding the strength, especially since she’d long suspected that under his façade of intellectualism and perfect manners, he hid a beast.
Tonight, she would find out if she’d been right.
Liz had no illusions. He was capable of breaking her heart into a million pieces, and she’d try not to let him. But even if she only got one night with this man, she would take it because she would rather live with foolish regret than stubborn ignorance.
“Elizabeth.”
His voice hummed in the quiet room, caressing between her ears, vibrating through her body. She flushed with arousal.
This was it. This was happening.
She’d wanted him the moment they’d met, but he’d been forbidden. Now, he stood in front of her with his broad shoulders and his dark hair. Not a president, but a man. Herman—at least for the night.
Liz tried to steady her breathing as she crossed the room to him. Finally, she had permission to touch him the way she’d always wanted. Of course she’d heard him say tonight would be his way all the way, that it wouldn’t be tender, but she wanted one sweet moment she could cling to later before her man turned beast.
She stopped in front of him and reached up, brushing her fingers against the sliver threaded at his temples—the only sign that he was aging. Naturally, it made him even more attractive.
He caught her hand, clasping it in his big one. “Be sure.”
That was Zack, always putting others first, even when his whole world was falling apart. Even when he needed so desperately for himself.
Tonight, she was here for him in every way. Liz hoped with all her heart he understood that.
She would cling to him through the bittersweet hours until dawn, memorizing every touch. Tomorrow they would go back to their corners, and the turmoil would start again. It would be worse because she would know exactly how good it felt to be in his arms. But their passion could only be temporary because he was right, any chance they’d had at a future had died the day Joy had. After her murder and three long years, how could they ever hope for more?
“I’m sure,” she murmured. “I want everything you have to give me tonight.”

REVIEW: LOVE, AGAIN by L.P. Doer is a contemporary, adult, stand alone, erotic, romance story line focusing on thirty-two years olds, fire fighter Cole Haywood, and award winning Hollywood director Aubrey Reynolds.

Told from dual first person points of view (Cole and Aubrey) LOVE, AGAIN follows the rekindling romance between childhood sweethearts and former lovers, thirty-two years olds, fire fighter Cole Haywood, and award winning Hollywood director Aubrey Reynolds. Ten years earlier, one month before their scheduled wedding, Aubrey Reynolds walked away from the man that she loved in the hope of finding herself and a new path in life. Fast forward to present day wherein a medical mistakes sends our heroine on a bucket list trip of what ifs and whys including a return to her hometown of Dusty Valley, Oklahoma where she lost her heart, and the man that she loved. Enter fire fighter Cole Haywood. What ensues is the second chance romance and relationship between Cole and Aubrey, and the potential fall-out as Aubrey struggles with returning to Hollywood, and the possibility of leaving the man she has always loved.

Cole Haywood had never stopped loving the woman who broke his heart but fame, fortune and life pulled Aubrey Reynolds out of his life. Bitter and broken hearted, Cole never expected to come face to face with his past, a past he struggles to forgive and forget. Aubrey Reynolds knows she screwed up the day she walked out of Cole Haywood’s life. Never regretting the fame and success of Hollywood, Aubrey battles to make amends, walking away from the thing that she loved.

The relationship between Aubrey and Cole is one of second chances; a rekindling romance and love between two people whose lives went in opposite directions but a love that never waivered in spite of the different paths, and varying degrees of fame and success. With Aubrey’s return to Dust Valley, Oklahoma, Cole is hoping for a second chance. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate, without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

We are introduced to Aubrey’s best friend and actress Emilia Hart ; Cole’s brother Bennett Haywood, as well as a number of residents of Dust Valley, Oklahoma, and the many people our heroine meets on her journey of discovery. I am hoping the author has plans for Bennett and Emilia’s story.

LOVE, AGAIN is a story of family, friendship, forgiveness and second chances. The premise is sweet, engaging and uplifting; the romance is captivating and seductive; the characters are colorful, energetic and fun. The conflict is limited to the reconciliation between our leading couple. LOVE, AGAIN is a wonderful and heart warming story for the romantic in all of us.

As the Cold War swells like a hurricane over the shores of the Florida Strait, Beatriz is caught between the clash of Cuban American politics and the perils of a forbidden affair with a powerful man driven by ambitions of his own. When the ever-changing tides of history threaten everything she has fought for, she must make a choice between her past and future–but the wrong move could cost Beatriz everything–not just the island she loves, but also the man who has stolen her heart.

REVIEW: WHEN WE LEFT CUBA is the second instalment in Chanel Cleeton’s historical, fictionalized account focusing on the Perez family, and the Cuban Revolution.

Told from first person point of view (past 1960-1963) and present day (2016), third person (Beatriz Perez) WHEN WE LEFT CUBA following two timelines, focuses on Beatriz Perez, a Cuban immigrant to America, in the aftermath of the Cuban Revolution that destroyed her family, and everyone she loved. Desperate to avenge the death of her beloved brother Alejandro, Beatriz Perez’ political ideology becomes known to the American government, and is eventually recruited by the CIA, to infiltrate anti-Castro organizations in an attempt to ferret out information concerning the Cuban dictator. Determined to return to her homeland once Fidel is deposed, Beatriz finds herself part of an international espionage group headed by the CIA. Meeting US senator Nicholas ‘Nick’ Preston finds our heroine caught between her head and heart knowing her actions will reflect poorly on the people she loves. What ensues is Beatriz’ resolve to avenge her brother’s death, and the multi-decade love affair with a man who is destined for greatness at the cost of her love.

WHEN WE LEFT CUBA is a story of family, politics, relationships and love: of betrayal and vengeance, power and control; of one woman’s fight for freedom and independence, and one man’s love that was never enough. WHEN WE LEFT CUBA is not a story of romance but a love story between a man and a woman; between a woman and the country she lost. Beatriz Perez grew up surrounded by riches and money, and for her parents, it was all about perception and presentation, but our heroine refuses to follow tradition including society’s expectations of a woman, a Cuban immigrant woman, who struggles to be accepted for her ideals, her self-determination and personal autonomy.

WHEN WE LEFT CUBA is a detailed, multi-faceted, and engaging story line that follows the build up to cold war between the US and Cuba, and the ramifications of the Bay of Pigs, the assassination of John F Kennedy, and the consequences of Beatriz’s commitment to Cuba, to vengeance, and to her self-reliance. WHEN WE LEFT CUBA is a powerful, dynamic and imaginative story of one family’s battle to remain true to themselves in spite of the increasing break down of ethical, moral and personal beliefs.

REVIEW: FALLEN PRINCESS is the seventh instalment in Chantal Fernando’s contemporary, adult WIND DRAGON MC romance series. This is police officers Clover Black, and Felix Banks’ story line. FALLEN PRINCESS can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous instalments is revealed where necessary, FALLEN PRINCESS focuses on the next generation of the motorcycle families. Clover is the daughter of Dex ‘Sin’ Black, vice president of the Wind Dragons MC, and his wife, attorney Faye Black.

NOTE: Several characters from both the Wind Dragons MC and the Cursed Ravens MC cross over for cohesion and history.

Told from first person perspective (Clover Black) FALLEN PRINCESS follows police rookie Clover Black as she struggles to keep secret her family history from the people she works with, and battles between head and heart as it pertains to her job as a cop, and the people she loves. Clover Black, for all intents and purposes, is a little naïve to believe her family connection to the Wind Dragon MC does not go unnoticed by the local PD but a difficult partnership with someone on the force means gaining a reputation, and a new partner on the job. Enter police officer Felix Banks, and the man with whom Clover will fall in love. What ensues is the forbidden but building relationship between Clover and Felix, and the potential fall-out as Clover’s connections to both the Wind Dragons and the Curse Ravens MC will be used against our story line heroine.

The relationship between Clover and Felix is quick to develop. There is an immediate connection but Clover keeps secret her family history, and her connection to the local MC. When a drug sting brings our heroine face to face with the people she loves, all bets are off, including her need to reveal the truth to the man with whom she is falling in love. The $ex scenes are passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

There is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters many of whom were previously introduced in both the Wind Dragons and Cursed Ravens MC series.

FALLEN PRINCESS is a quick read but in saying that the entire story line felt rushed; the build up was cursory; and the conflict resolutions were hurried and abrupt. Overall, I feel like the small details were missing, details that would have grabbed my attention and pulled me into the story –I did not feel connected. The MC lifestyle is virtually non-existent, almost ‘vanilla’ in comparison to other seires; the action and chaos mostly absent. The premise is fast paced and intriguing; the romance is flirty and warm; the characters are energetic. I am a big fan of Chantal Fernando’s MC series but for me, Fallen Princess didn’t hit the mark.

Review:

Holy Sister by Mark Lawrence is the 3rd and final book in his Book of the Ancestor series.  Nona Grey continues as our young powerful heroine, and many of the wonderful characters we loved in the first two books are back.  Once again, Mark Lawrence gives us another fantastic story line, with non-stop intense mind-boggling action packed thriller throughout the book, and bringing a satisfying conclusion to this series.

In Holy Sister, Nona Grey, our wonderful heroine, is the center focus of the story, which for more than half of the book is split between two timeframes- present day and three years earlier.  Personally I wasn’t crazy about the going back and forth between the two narratives early on, but by the time the storyline became mostly the present day, all the pieces fell into place and we could see why what happened three years (soon after the end of Gray Sister) before was important to fully understand.

Nona Grey over the period of three books has definitely become one of the best heroines, especially in a fantasy world.  With war on the horizon, Nona steps in fight a losing battle, but fight she does, and her powerful ability to use those she is close to as her fighting tool was simply magnificent.  Nona was a child when this all started back in Red Sister, when she was saved by Abbess Glass and joined the convent; as the years pass, friendships are made and lost; Nona becomes their savior in a horrific devastating battle that had us holding our breath to see who will survive.

The second half of this book was filled with so much action, all told through Nona’s eyes, which Lawrence killed us with so many emotions throughout, such as fear, tension, worry, anger, heartbreak and the sense of love Nona and girls had for each other, or the respect for the nuns who trained them.

I truly loved Nona, who had to endure so much and even when she was on her last legs, she forced herself to push her magical ability beyond endurance to help those she loved. It was simply amazing to watch what she could do, and what a wonderful fantastic heroine Lawrence created.  No question, I will miss Nona Grey.  I also loved many of the secondary characters, such as Ara, Zole, Clera, Sister Kettle, and Abbess Glass, to name a few.  Abbess Glass turns out to play such an important part of this trilogy from Red Sister to Holy Sister, as we learn more about her long range visions, and her planning, especially with Nona and Zole.  There were a number of surprises as we began to see the results.

The last half of the book was an intense, harrowing , destructive adventure that left me holding my  breath as Nona , the girls & nuns faced so many dangerous, mind-boggling  & death defying situations that also brought about much heartbreak.  To tell too much more would be major spoilers, but trust me when I say this is a must read.   Holy Sister was a fantastic conclusion to a wonderful trilogy.  Bravo to Mark Lawrence for giving us a wonderful series, with a marvelous heroine.  If you enjoy fantasy, in this unique intriguing world, with a fabulous heroine and other wonderful characters, you must read the Book of the Ancestor series.
