 Review:

In Legacy Found by Jillian David, finally …. Kerr gets his book? he is brother to Garrison and Vaughn, and twin to Shelby (each have their own books.) They are the Taggart family and they own a ranch.

We start the book with a flash back, to when Kerr was in the army, we see the accident that alters Kerr’s life forever. He’s been bitter and angry for a long time. But seeing his siblings find love, Kerr wants that, and he knows exactly where to find it …..

Izzy is a Brand, but the Taggart’s and the Brand’s aren’t friends, in fact Izzy’s family have been trying to gain the Taggart’s ranch by any means necessary (including trying to kill a few of the family) Izzy isn’t like that, and she’s had enough, she’s sees an opportunity and informs Kerr and his family what her brothers are up to!!!

Seizing the chance, Kerr makes his intentions plain for Izzy. He will protect Izzy, don’t let the fact he’s got a prosthetic leg fool you into thinking he isn’t capable, he is and he will prove it to Izzy any way he can.

Each sibling had a unique quality/power that is theirs to own and control. Garrison can detect lies, Shelby can find anyone, anywhere and can see into the future, Vaughn has a built in danger and protection radar (it lets him know when bad things will happen to him) and Kerr has a psychic link to his twin and has the ability of knowing when danger will strike and how to combat it.

Now for those who have read the other books in this series (and to get the full story I think they need to be read in order) you’ll know there are forces controlling what’s going on. And each Taggart sibling has had to do battle in one form or another, and Kerr and Izzy are no exception. In fact because of Izzy telling the Taggart family what her family are planning, the evil stalking Kerr and his siblings turns its gaze upon Izzy, and now she’s in big trouble.

I’ve really enjoyed these books, there is the right amount steamy scenes (so many authors have pages and pages and pages of it?) and plenty of action and adventure thrown in.

So will the Kerr and the Taggart family win against the evil stalking them? And how will Izzy cope if Kerr has to kill her brothers?

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date April 25, 2019

Derek Tower has spent his life at war, first as a Green Beret and then as the owner of a private black-ops company, Cobra International Security. When a high-ranking US senator asks Cobra to protect his daughter, a midwife volunteering in Afghanistan, Derek’s gut tells him to turn the senator down. The last thing he wants to do is babysit an aid worker. But Jenna isn’t just another assignment. She’s also the younger sister of his best friend, the man who died taking bullets meant for him. There’s no way Derek can refuse.

Jenna Hamilton doesn’t need a bodyguard, especially not one hired by her intrusive and controlling father. She knew the risks when she signed on to work in rural Afghanistan, and the hospital already has armed security. She also doesn’t need the distraction of a big, brooding operative skulking about, even if he is her late brother’s best friend—and sexy as hell. As far as she’s concerned, he can pack up his Humvee and drive into the sunset. And, no, nothing her hormones have to say about him will change her mind.

From the moment his boots hit the ground in Afghanistan, Derek does his best to win Jenna over, posing as her brother so the two of them can spend time alone. Except that what he feels for her is anything but brotherly. Stolen moments lead to secret kisses—and an undeniable sexual attraction that shakes them both to the core. But events have been set into motion that they cannot escape. When a ruthless warlord sets his sights on Jenna, Derek will do whatever it takes to keep her safe, even if it costs him his heart—or his life.

•••••••••••

REVIEW:HARD TARGET is the first instalment in Pamela Clare’s contemporary, adult COBRA ELITE romantic, military suspense series focusing on the men and women who work for the Black Ops Company known as Cobra International Security. This is Cobra owner and Green Beret Derek Tower, and thirty-year old, nurse/midwife Jenna Hamilton’s story line. COBRA ELITE is a spin-off from the author’s I-Team Series. Several characters cross-over for familiarity and back story including Holly and Nick, and Javier’“Cobra’ and Laura.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Derek and Jenna) HARD TARGET followed Cobra International Security owner Derek Tower as he is hired to retrieve US Senator Hamilton’s daughter from a compound in Afghanistan. Jenna Hamilton is a midwife who is contracted to work with, and help the women struggling in the Balkh Province of Afghanistan, which is currently under the protection of a warlord turned politician. What ensue is the battle to protect Jenna from an unknown enemy, and the building relationship between Derek and our story line heroine.

Years earlier Green Beret James Hamilton lost his life protecting our story line hero Derek Tower, now it was his turn to pay back the family by rescuing the woman with whom he would fall in love. Things go from bad to worse when Jenna refuses Derek’s offer to return back to the States, as she struggles with the religious beliefs of a country not known for protecting their own. Several attempts to kidnap our will eventually be successful but in doing so Derek’s man will risk their lives for the woman he loves.

The relationship between Derek and Jenna begins as a forbidden romance in a country where women are treated like trash. As Derek goes undercover as Jenna’s brother, their secret will come to the forefront threatening everyone including our story line couple. The $ex scenes are intimate, erotic and intense, without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

There is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters including numerous men and women who work for Cobra International Security; several midwives in training in the Afghanistan compound, along with the security and soldiers; as well as Jenna’s father Senator Hamilton. The requisite evil has many faces.

HARD TARGET is a fast paced story line with a copious amount of technical detail and military jargon, researched geographical locations and destinations, as well as the threats against the women living and working in the Middle East. The premise is intriguing, engaging and edgy; the romance is seductive and captivating; the characters are energetic and inspiring. HARD TARGET is an action packed story that pays homage to the women who suffer to protect the lives of others.

Lola Barringer is on her hands and knees when I step foot on her property.
Her perfect ass is the first thing I see and the only thing I want.

She’s flawless and funny – and so damn sexy. But when she takes a good look at me, she’s furious.
Turns out I broke her heart years ago.

I was her first crush, her one and only fantasy … and now I’ll do what it takes to win her back. I effed up once – but I won’t do it again. This time I’m nailing down the girl who got away.

•••••••••

REVIEW: A short, sweet, steamy story that will tug on the heartstrings.

Lola was easy to relate for me, shy in high school, but an open and warm heart she comes into her own as she grows into an adult. Jump ahead to the present, Mason Stone enters the picture. The boy from the wrong side of the tracks, known womanizer and Lola’s all-time crush. With twists and turns, misunderstandings and a lost letter, Mason and Lola miss their moment in high school to have it come again years later.

Lola needs a contractor for her new home and whom happens to be that contractor? That’s right the one and only Mason Stone of Nailed Down construction. Mason is still the boy she remembers, cocky, womanizing and oh so hot. The worst thing though? He doesn’t even recognize her when they meet again. Lola is unsure if she is willing to out her heart on the line again for a guy that has already broke it once, but…the connection between them is strong and Lola has a hard time defining these unforgotten feelings for Mason.

Can Mason and Lola find out the secrets of the pass? Will Lola be able to forgive Mason for what he did? Second chances are always a risk, but are either or them willing to take that risk?

Contemporary style but with some mention of physical and sexual abuse, warning to safe readers!

REVIEW: Fall in love all over again with Frankie Love!

Sassy, sweet fun and flirty. Jenna has been in love with her brother’s best friend her entire life, but what is she supposed to do when the only thing he thinks of her is a “sisterly love.” Porter is a hands-on man, and part of her brother’s company, Nailed Down, when he arrives at Jenna’s home to build her house, the emotions the two-share run ramped. Will Porter but his relationship with Jenna’s brother on the line for her? Will Jenna risk losing the only family she had left to finally see if Porter has feelings about her? Will those feelings be true?

This story was short and sweet and such a turn on, warning, don’t do what I did and read it and work, people will look at you funny when you laugh at the silly jokes. Truly though, this is such a good read, it’s uplifting and fun, it will bring such a light to your heart. Everyone loves a good book!

text
Porter“It’s my week off,” I mutter into my phone, knowing my friend and business partner’s most recent request is going to be a hell of a lot tougher than just building a damn greenhouse. Because it means spending one-on-one time with the man’s little sister.
“Exactly,” Eli says. “When have you ever been able to sit still and just relax? Plus, you’d be doing me a favor. I’m a little tied up at the moment.”
I grunt. More like he’s got his new wife tied up. Lucky son of a bitch. Not that I have any lascivious thoughts about Karis, but I am jealous that my friend has met the woman of his dreams, managed to put a ring on her finger, and a baby in her belly. Especially since the woman I want has a huge red flashing sign above her forehead that reads Off Limits.
Sure, the whole falling for your best friend’s little sister may be cliché, hell I may have even been tempted to break the bro-code rule, if the brother in question wasn’t Eli Blake. I’ve seen what the man has done to any poor bastard who’s ever looked Jenna’s way. God forbid I give in to my cravings and do more than just look.
In all fairness, I’ve been just as possessive of her. Because, the thought of any man getting close to her, touching her…shit, it stirs something primal inside me.
“Fine,” I grumble, knowing that if I refuse to do the work for Jenna, it’ll just make Eli suspicious. The crazy thing is I want this job-any chance to be around her makes the world a better place-even if it’s torture.
“Just be nice to her,” Eli says.
“I’m always nice,” I growl.
He laughs.
“Come on, you’re not known for your charm. And you know how sheltered Jenna is-just be easy on her.” I grunt a reply, trying to hide my annoyance. All I’ve ever been to Jenna is polite, even though what I want to be is so much more. But I don’t trust myself around her. That’s why I keep her at arm’s length.
Jenna has been like a little sister to me for the past ten years-too fucking bad I no longer see the twelve-year-old girl who used to follow me around like a puppy.
Jenna is all woman now. And when I pull my truck to a stop in front of her little cottage and see her bent over her garden, I let out a low, painful moan.
She’s wearing a pair of cut-off jeans that show off her round little ass, and a tight tank top that hugs all her curves. Her long dark hair is pulled up in a ponytail giving me a perfect view of her slim neck and profile. Those blue eyes meet mine as I get out of the truck, like always they brighten when they land on me, her lips spreading into a grin as she stands and pulls off her gardening gloves.
“Hey, Porter.” Her sweet voice wraps around my cock.
God, this is going to be torture. Sweet, fucking torture.
“This place is looking great,” I tell her, looking around the blooming hostas, and azaleas, and clematis that climb the trellis-anywhere but at her. “You have a real green thumb.”
“But I still can’t use a hammer or screwdriver.” She shoves her gloves in her back pocket. “I really appreciate you helping me with the greenhouse. I’ve gotten a lot of new business this year, and it would be great to grow my own perennials, rather than have to go to a nursery to buy them.”
“Makes sense.” I rub the back of my neck and try not to notice how close she’s standing. And I sure as hell shouldn’t be noticing how her nipples poke out from her shirt.
“So can I show you what I’m thinking?” she asks, licking her pink lips. For a second my cock twitches-is she thinking what I’m thinking? But the idea is tossed aside as quickly as it came-she’s leading me to the cleared area where she wants the greenhouse.
“Eli sent me over the specs, were they your idea?”
Jenna nods. “Yeah, I thought a basic plastic frame and mesh over it would be easiest.”
I grunt. “You shouldn’t have what’s easiest. You deserve the best.”
Jenna smirks. “That’s sweet, but I was going for affordable.
I’m still trying to get this business off the ground.” I frown, looking at my phone. The plans Eli sent over are simple but aren’t built to last. When I put down a foundation, I want it to be solid. I want it to last. And yes, that’s a fucking metaphor. I’m not a player, I don’t sink my cock into any old thing. I know exactly who I want. And if I can’t have her, I don’t want anyone at all.
“I can do better than this,” I tell her. “I have most of the lumber I’ll need in my supply yard at home.”
“Eli won’t like you dipping into the company pot for his little sister.” I scowl, pushing my phone in my pocket. “This is on me.”
“Why would you do this for me, Porter?” she asks, stepping closer. She has no idea how much it kills me to be so damn close to her. She smells like honeysuckle and sweet tea and I want to drink her up, all day long.
Across from her, I feel so big, so overbearing. I’m six-foot-five, broad shoulders and growl more often than not. She’s a little thing, my palm would cover her back. She’s small enough to slip into my arms, light as a feather.
“You’re like family.”
My voice is rough from trying to hold back my need for her, and I know I must come off too harsh because she just nods, lowering her eyes.
“Right. Like family.” She lets out a small sigh.
For a moment I wonder if I just fucked up. She won’t look at me. I thought she’d be acting the opposite-pleased that I am going to build her a legit greenhouse.
“Did I do something wrong?” I ask. It’s hard to look at her. Her tits are perky, her tank top cropped and her belly bare. Fuck I want to run my hands all over her, but I step back.
I know Jenna never dates and I lie to myself, saying it’s because deep down she knows what I know.
That we belong together.
She lifts her gaze, sighing. “No, Porter. You did everything exactly right. Just like always.”
I swallow, trying to get a read on the girl who I’ve known more than half my life. “Alright then, guess it’s time to get to work.”
She looks over at the flower bed she was weeding when I arrived. “I’ll just be over there, then…on my hands and knees.” Jenna licks her lips again and I wonder if she has any idea how fucking hot she looks when she does that. “In case you need anything, Porter. Anything from me at all.”
Jenna walks away and my cock is throbbing. Holy hell, if that’s not an innuendo I don’t know what is.
Now that Jenna Blake is all grown up, I don’t know if I’ll be able to keep my hands off her.
I sure as hell want to tend her garden, that’s for damn fucking sure.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date April 27, 2019

What do you do when an NHL player has your dog and won’t give it back?

First grade teacher Maggie Hudson has been grieving since her dog disappeared three months ago. Imagine her shock when she sees an NHL player being interviewed with her dog sitting next to him.

NHL player Spencer Corbett is blindsided when a sexy, curvaceous woman shows up on his doorstep demanding to get her beloved pet back. He can’t bear to relinquish the dog he found on the side of the road. After all, the pug gave his aging Labrador a new lease on life. Luckily, just as Maggie begins to leave with her pet, she realizes how important he is to Spencer’s dog.

Their shared custody of the dog leads to passion and possibilities that neither saw coming. Love for the dogs brings them together, but when a past girlfriend shows up with a boy who looks remarkably like Spencer, suddenly their fragile relationship is skating on thin ice. Will the truth shatter everything or will they find the courage to build a future together?

••••••••••

REVIEW: A sports story isn’t my usual read, but I thought I’d give it a go ……

Maggie is a school teacher and avid hockey fan, she follows the San Francisco Dragons loyally, but her loyalty is tested when her best friend Jade tells her to watch an online interview. It shows Spencer Corbett holding HER BELOVED pug Kirby (the dog had disappeared a few months ago from her back garden) and Maggie thought she’d lost him forever, and when Spencer won’t return her calls, Maggie goes to his home to find her pug and bring Kirby home.

Spencer loves his ageing Labrador and after finding a pug by the roadside, it gave her a new lease of life, but now a fiery female stands at his door, demanding the return of HER dog!!!

After a little soul searching, Maggie gives in and says they can share the dog. And a mutual love of dogs bring them closer together. A romance soon blossoms, but it’s put to the test when an old girlfriend returns, and brings with her a young boy that looks a whole lot like Spencer.

There are plenty of laughs in this book. I don’t follow hockey, but the author put a lot of time and effort into this book, the research was very extensive.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date May 13, 2019

I am the monarch of Manhattan’s underworld.
A corrupt king, ruling a sinful empire.

I wasn’t born to the crown.
Nevertheless, I wear it well.

Aislinn Granville is the Crown Jewel of my empire—my queen.
To my enemies, she’s my Achilles heel—a perfect pawn.

Without her, I am a wounded warrior.
A ruthless, relentless beast.

There is nowhere she can be taken that I won’t find her.
No adversary I won’t crush to get her back.

Even if I have to burn this city to the ground.

••••••••••

REVIEW: Corrupt Savior is book two in The Wages of Sin duet by Tara Leigh. This book begins right where book one – Cruel Sanctuary ends. With a few subtle reminders the author sweeps you right back in to the seedy underworld of Manhattan politics and crime, and off of the cliff she left us on when book one ended! This book doesn’t miss a beat! Aislinn has been taken and Damon is tearing Manhattan apart looking for her! Aislinn isn’t quite sure Damon is looking for her after the last encounter they had, but she is determined to save herself!

And although she has been the victim in her childhood, she was not going to let it happen this time. Not now!

Damon struggles with the fact that he was supposed to be protecting Aislinn and he let her down! He is the one who was supposed to be her sanctuary when all hell is breaking loose! And he will go to any length to get her back. But it seems he may not have to!

Aislinn became the woman you knew she could be all along in this story! She doesn’t allow her past to bog her down in the present! And, while she loves being in Damon’s arms, she also can hold her own when she needs to! And she proves herself time and again!

The chemistry between these two main characters doesn’t miss a beat from book one to book two! And they connect on an even deeper levelin this book!

There are some sweltering love scenes in this book, but I must admit – it offers so much more! Jammed packed with action, mystery and mayhem, its an amazing duet series!

Highly recommend both books – Cruel Sanctuary & Corrupt Savior!

My heartbeat is an erratic, distracting pitter-patter against my ribs as I take in the stark beauty of the man standing in front of me. He looks like the same man I ran from. Almost.

The same rich black hair and inky eyelashes. The same strong, shadowed jawline and high, elegant cheekbones. The same spark of intensity lighting up those dark, dark eyes.

But now there are smudges beneath them. And faint horizontal lines, like the silvery remnants of a shattered spider web, crossing his forehead.

Damon is glaring at me like an adversary he’s torn between spanking or fucking. There is yearning in his gaze, a faint glimmer of tenderness beneath his infuriated expression.

I like it. A lot.

The panic and fear and pure terror that filled my veins just a few hours ago hasn’t yet evaporated. Those intense emotions are still there, like toxins that have yet to be flushed from my system. I don’t want to be treated with kid gloves. Not by Damon King.

I need his intensity now more than ever. I am desperate to revel in the raging storm Damon and I create when we’re together. The kind of storm that deserves a name. Deserves to be written in history books for its power . . . and for the toll of its destruction.

I want the shocking illumination of lightning. The ominous energy of thunder.

I want to give and take.

Clash and break.

Writhe and shake.

“Damon.” I say his name like a warning. I need the savage who claimed me as his own. My savage king.

He presses a firm kiss to my forehead, his fingers lightly pushing into the hair at the base of my scalp. “Tell me this,” he says. “Is there any hurt I can’t kiss better?”

The throaty rumble of Damon’s voice is like a liberal pour of molasses on my frayed nerves. “No.” My nose is flush with his chest and I breath deep that scent I didn’t think I would ever smell again. Wood and whiskey and raw masculinity. So damn intoxicating.

He sweeps his tongue along the rim of my ear. “Is there any hurt I can’t lick better?”

The tension in my shoulders eases as I flatten my palms against his chest. “No.”

Damon lifts my chin, our eyes locking on each other. “Is there any hurt I can’t fuck better?”

My cheeks warm as I draw my lower lip between my teeth. Then I shake my head slowly, “No.”

He smiles that darkly seductive grin and my stomach flips. “Let’s go take a shower.”

I nod my head eagerly. A long hot shower sounds perfect. A long hot shower—with my savage king—sounds downright exquisite. By the time the water is running, my borrowed bathrobe is just a white smudge of bad memory strewn across the tile floor.

Damon begins unbuttoning his shirt and I eagerly reach for his belt. When he is as naked as I am, he cups my chin between his thumb and forefingers and tips it upward. His kiss is hard but not punishing. The perfect amount of pressure.

I moan low in my throat.

He growls in return. And when we pull apart, we are wearing matching lust-drunk grins.

“Do you trust me?” he asks.

“I thought you said I shouldn’t trust anyone who has to ask.”

“I’m asking now.”

The truth falls from my lips. “With my life.”

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date May 14, 2019

Meet the unforgettable men of London’s most notorious tavern, The Wicked Duke. Seductively handsome, with charm and wit to spare, one night with these rakes and rogues will never be enough…

Lifelong romantic Thaddeus Middleton is on the hunt for a wife. He hopes to find a woman more attracted to him than to money. Instead, he finds himself drawn to a spitfire who isn’t interested in him at all! At least, that’s what she says when she’s not kissing him beneath the stars…

Miss Priscilla Weatherby will inherit a fortune… provided she remains unwed and scandal-free. Easy enough, until she meets a man more dangerous than haughty lords and heartless rakes. Thad is a sweet, sexy delight, whose passionate embrace will ruin everything—including her! She’ll sacrifice anything for independence. Even love

•••••••••

REVIEW: One Night of Passion begins with Thaddeus Middleton attending yet another soirée at Almack’s. He is determined to find a woman who is interested in him and not a title. Which is a good thing, because although he isn’t titled, he is a good man who believes in love and wants to make a good life for himself and the “one”. He has seen a few of his friends fall in love recently and that only makes him want it more.

Priscilla Weatherby is set to inherit a fortune from her absentee father as long as she remains unmarried up until her 25th birthday. She also attends the parties at Almack’s, but rebuffs any and all advances…until she meets Thaddeus Middleton. If she were looking to wed, he would be someone she could find herself interested in. He’s sweet, handsome and funny, which makes him dangerous to her plan.

Priscilla’s grandfather and father are adventurers and have been absent for most of her life. She longs to join them on their adventures, much to her grandmother’s chagrin. Having lost her mother when she was small, Priscilla has lived her entire life with her grandmother. When Thaddeus calls on Priscilla, she finds herself a bit surprised when her grandmother tells her she should marry him. Priscilla admits to herself, and Thaddeus, pretty quickly that their attraction is mutual, but she also tells him that she will never marry him. Not because of his lack of title, but because of her need for adventure and to be with her father.

Thaddeus finds himself heartbroken, but after some serious thought, knows just what he has to do to win not only Priscilla’s hand in marriage, but her heart as well.

One Night of Passion is a wonderful addition to The Wicked Duke series. Priscilla is a little naïve when it comes to her father, but once the truth is revealed, she knows without a doubt what she has to do. Thaddeus is a wonderful character. His sense of honor and loyalty will endear him to everyone. Their chemistry, however, pulls you in from the very beginning. I’ve enjoyed the other books in the series, but this is my favorite. If you’re looking for a sweetly developed romance that has amazing characters, this one is for you. Well done, Erica Ridley! Very well done!

Earlier this year, Mr. Thaddeus Middleton had realized he’d been placing all his attention on the same pool of ladies. The outgoing ones, the flirtatious ones, the ones who had known him for so long that every one of his dances was promised within moments of stepping foot in a ballroom. Such evenings were fun, but got him no closer to his goal. Worse, he might have spent the past decade skipping over all the most interesting women.
Thad had immediately declared this season the Year of the Wallflower.
By dedicating at least half of each evening to ladies he’d never danced with before, he’d met countless new friends… and no potential brides. But just because there had been no fireworks so far didn’t mean he was on the wrong track. In fact, the season had barely begun, and he’d already witnessed two unlikely love matches. Didn’t fortune come in threes?
He turned a slow circle, paying close attention to those in the margins. Although gentlemen carried no dance cards, Thad kept careful track. He still had a handful of unclaimed sets. Some young lady here tonight might be the one to spark the fireworks he sought.
There.
An excited tingle of anticipation rushed through him. Dark brown curls, gorgeous brown eyes, dusky pink lips, an enticing combination of soft skin and lush curves wrapped in a gauzy roses-and-cream evening gown.
He knew her name: Miss Priscilla Weatherby. They had been formally presented during her come-out four or five years ago, but hadn’t spoken since.
Although a reasonably familiar face at society gatherings, Miss Weatherby rarely stood up for more than a quadrille or two and tended to guard her company. As such, her name had never been linked to gossip—or bandied about much at all. She was almost as much a fixture as the gilded columns and crimson ropes partitioning the ballroom.
Not today. He rolled back his shoulders in determination. After being on the shelf for five years, Miss Weatherby had likely tired of being overlooked by unimaginative lordlings. If she had never danced a waltz, why, Thad would be honored to be the first to ask.
He strode in her direction with confidence and good cheer. Even if no spark marked the occasion, at least they would get a dance out of it, and possibly a few laughs. Miss Weatherby might well become the most memorable set of the entire night.
When he reached the pilaster whose shadow half-concealed her from view, Thad swept a glorious bow. “How do you do this evening, Miss Weatherby? Dare I hope room remains on your card for a dance?”
She gazed back at him with a fathomless expression. “Why?”
He blinked. “Er, because this is a ballroom. For dancing. The food might be wretched, but the orchestra is lovely. Unfortunately, it is impossible to dance a quadrille by oneself, so I wondered—”
“I know what dancing is,” she interrupted, her dark eyes locked on his with amusement and heat. “Why would you want to do it with me?”
Thad moved closer with interest. Now that the conversation had taken such an unprecedented turn, he wasn’t certain he wished to waste a thirty-minute set marking out the steps of a quadrille. Conversing with Miss Weatherby would be leagues more diverting.
“We needn’t dance,” he said at once, and gave her a full smile. “I’m happy to promenade, if you prefer.”
There was no sense hiding how intrigued he’d just become. Thad did not believe in playing games. Part of being in the right place at the right time meant not ruining the moment by feigning indifference.
She tilted her head. “Did I do something to make you think I’d be interested in perambulating about a ballroom on your elbow?”
“Er,” Thad said brightly. “That is…”
“Or did you come here because you judged me to be a wallflower, and therefore desperate for the attention of some impossibly handsome gentleman with courtly manners and a contagious smile?”
Impossibly handsome and courtly manners sounded wildly complimentary.
Thad suspected it was not.
“Er,” he said again. “Only a fool would believe all wallflowers—”
“Only a fool,” she interrupted, “would assume a woman not dancing must be heartbroken over a lack of suitors. Perhaps the woman received plenty of offers and simply said, ‘No.’ Just like this.”
Miss Weatherby stepped away from the pilaster and into the light, her upturned chin and plump lips suddenly close to his own. “No.”
With a flutter of eyelashes, she turned and walked off.
Thad stared after her, thunderstruck. Their encounter had been more sledgehammer than spark, but one thing was certain:
Only a fool would overlook a woman like Miss Weatherby.

“Can I join you?” he asks, motioning to the table.

There’s interest in his eyes, the kind a man has for a woman, but who knows, maybe it’s real or maybe it’s not real. Maybe he knows who I am and sees a path to power and fame. The way Tobey wanted me for money and power, right up until the moment I’d called his number aka his agenda; thus, he has not called me since I left. Maybe Harvard will lie even better than Tobey did. Maybe Harvard will at least kiss better than he did, and the lies would taste like temptation rather than convenience. At least then, if I’m used, I’ll enjoy being used.

Whatever the case, it’s clear I might actually be angry with Tobey and that aside, the interest that Harvard has shown in me, must be controlled before my Denver sanctuary is destroyed. “You can join me,” I say, “but only because I’m trying to save the rest of the place from the attorney in the house.”

I am pleased when Harvard laughs, where Tobey would have scowled, proving that Harvard has a sense of humor, which is rare for those in my life. I’ve barely completed this thought when he moves forward and claims the seat next to me, not across from me, settling his briefcase on that chair instead. In the process, his leg brushes my leg and for the briefest of moments, I’m transported back to the place that I’m now trying to forget: to Austin, to Drew’s leg next to mine, his wink, and I do now what I did then. I jerk back. If Harvard notices he doesn’t react. “Since we haven’t been formally introduced,” he says, resting his naked hands on the table. “I’m Logan. Logan Casey.”

“Logan Casey,” I repeat trying to ground myself in the present, at least for now, but some part of me is still swimming in that memory, which naturally has me wondering if this man is a shark in the water around me. “Two first names,” I add. “Sounds like your parents fought over who got to pick your first name. Did they draw straws for which choice became your middle name?”

“You’re actually right on target,” he says, laughing again, and it’s a nice, masculine laugh, and oddly this thought feels familiar while Logan does not. “No one has ever guessed that,” he adds. “My mother won the name war. The women always win. Speaking of names. Do you have one?”

“Hailey Anne Pitt,” I say, “and in my house, my father won the name war.” Because in my father’s world, I add silently, the women don’t win the wars. At least, not that he knows, not in an obvious way. I’ve learned this well.

“Well then, Hailey Anne Pitt,” he says, “what’s a Stanford girl like you, doing in a place like this? You’re a long way from school.”

I’m smacked in the face with a lesson I’ve long ago learned and forgotten with this man; strangers do not always remain strangers and all offhanded remarks can come back to haunt you. “That was a joke,” I say, shutting the door connected to my real life, and a path that leads to my father. “I hate attorneys, remember?”

He narrows his eyes on me, and for no reason other than instinct, I believe he’s looking for a lie that he won’t find. I’m simply too well-taught from birth, too skilled at being more than one person to allow such a detection. Well that, and the fact that I really do hate attorneys, which is why I’ll be a good one.

“That was a joke?” he confirms.

“Yes,” I say. “Are you amused?”

“Yes, actually. I am. What does a lawyer-hating smart ass like yourself do for a living?”

“When not busy taunting those who went to law school,” I say. “I’m an aspiring artist.” Both honest answers, if you put a “was” in front of the “aspiring artist” which I’d thought that I’d come to terms with, but the knot in my stomach says I have not.

Logan motions toward the art room. “Your career explains why you ended up here.”

“I guess it does,” I say, as this place serves me well to reconnecting to the Pitt part of my life, which is a place I really need to be right now, for all kinds of reasons.

“Are you good?” Logan asks, as if he’s read my mind.

My father’s words answer him in my head. Art is useless unless you’re famous, he used to say often, because of course, it was inconceivable that I might be good enough to be famous. “Art is like movies and food,” I say, shoving aside that bad memory. “Good is subjective.” I don’t give him time to reply. I ping the conversation back toward him. “What kind of law do you practice?”

“Corporate,” he says, and this time he pings back to me. “Do you live in the neighborhood?”

“Yes,” I say simply. “Do you?”

“I bought a building a few years ago where I live and work which means this is my home turf, and why I know you’re new here.”

“I am,” I say and since he’s clearly going to ask for details, I quickly preempt with an on-the-fly story. Actually, it’s the suggested story, Rudolf included in my file. “I came here for a job, and my new boss owns a house he’s rented to me for dirt cheap.”

“And what does an artist do but create art for a living?”

“I’m working for a private art acquisitions firm. I now hunt for treasures for a living.” This lie is actually my dream job that I’ve never been allowed to entertain.

The horror flick loving waitress delivers my coffee and brownie. “Thank you,” I say, because every politician’s daughter has manners beaten into her.

“No problem,” she says, “but if you come to your senses and want a better version of that coffee, just shout.” She eyes Logan. “I already know you want a crappy tasting coffee, on endless pour and a chocolate chip cookie. Coming right up.”

“Thanks, Megan,” he says, giving her a wink that I don’t classify as flirtatious, just friendly, and Megan is gone.

“Obviously you’re a regular,” I comment, “and they even like you.”

“And they like me,” he confirms, “despite knowing I’m an attorney.

“Because you’re good looking and use it to your advantage.”

He arches a brow. “You think I’m good looking, do you?”

“Oh, come on,” I say, crinkling my nose. “Everyone thinks you’re good looking. I’m simply stating a fact. We use what we have and those of us that are smart, know what we have.” I move on from what is really quite inconsequential. “Why work here, not at home, or in the office?”

“I find I get a lot of work done with a cookie, coffee, and no access to streaming television,” he explains.

No one in my D.C. crowd would make an admission of being human and distractible. Some people in my situation might take comfort in that fact, but I don’t. Logan’s an attorney, and my gut, which I’ll confirm with research, says he’s a powerful one, the kind that radiates toward my father. Maybe that’s a coincidence and maybe it’s not. Maybe he’s testing how well I execute my cover story. The possibilities are many. Though in all fairness to Logan, perhaps I’d lean toward his innocence, if not for the laundry list of recent events such as Tobey being gay and the FBI agent, who is likely working for my father, that I slept with to prove I was a) still desirable and b) not a killer.

Review:

Reading the back cover of Unchained Desire by R.C. Alvarez, I was really interested to see how this would go…

Ramiel has been chained to a Demon Queen for centuries, humanity, oh please, the humans are all selfish and self centered. The only family he cares about are his brothers and sisters, and he hasn’t heard or seen them in a while. He is given seven days to replenish his energy (he needs blood) and that’s all he cares about now.

He wasn’t always this way, but meeting an innocent (who wasn’t so innocent) he was trapped, he now serves a Demon Queen, tortured and chained. But he hopes one day to be released, but he doesn’t know how or if ever.

Kyria is on the run!! Why?? And why does the tattoo like mark on the back of her neck ache? It’s been like that for the past two weeks. Her father has given her no choice, they have to run. After six years of some semblance of normality, they have to leave the ranch they’ve been living in and run again. Why? The cartel have found Darius (her dad) and Kyria, her mother had been murdered years ago and are after Darius. Her only friend Eli is concerned, but Darius is convinced Eli is part of the cartel (Eli’s father is the head, supposedly) and her dad keeps ranting about demons and keeping her safe.

In the bar, Ramiel is having a hard time, he feels out of sorts, he knows he should feed, but there is something not right. And he’s proven correct…. in she walks with an innocent and purity that sets his teeth on edge, but also a want (and last time he paid for it dearly) and when she approaches him to help her father (a man that helped put him where he is today) Ramiel tells her that he won’t help.

Kyria is crushed, her father needs help and she thought this Ramiel works help, but he’s arrogant and rude and really hot? but when he tells Kyria that her dad doesn’t deserve help, she needs to convince him.

And when a demon attacks Kyria, Ramiel has no choice but to help. But there is a price, and he doesn’t want to pay it. But Kyria could be Ramiel’s saviour, but will he trust her enough? And what secret does Kyria hold?

Unchained Desire was well written.  Ramiel and Kyria connected and the story really flowed. Very descriptive, I really liked it.
