REVIEW:Darcy’s done it again! One Night of Surrender, this installment of the Wicked Duke’s Club is entertaining and unforgettable.

In a youthful night of passion, ten years prior, Valentine Fairfax, Duke of Eastleigh and Isabelle Cortland, daughter of an Oxford professor, shared a love that marked each other’s soul for the rest of their lives.

Ten years later, both having married other people and lost those spouses to death, found themselves crossing paths again. Valentine’s unfaithful wife left him single again but with a fear of ever falling in love again. Isabelle’s unhappy marriage ended with the death of both her father and her gambling husband. However, she takes solace in her singleness, loving the freedom of making her own decisions and hopes to start a school for girls. Love, for her too, seems unlikely.

Currently, Isabelle is a governess with a passion for teaching the girls in her charge different languages and serious science and mathematics, great but not the norm for girls of the time period. Valentine a widow whose unfaithful wife died along with the child, has been healing and taking care of his duty and sister. He’s getting pressure to remarry and produce an heir by his grandmother.

When Isabelle’s employer, Lord Barkley and his family need a place to stay while their house renovations are being finished, he asks his friend Duke Eastleigh if he can help. Isabelle is so afraid for anyone to find out about her past with Eastleigh, she hopes she can avoid crossing his path. However, fate has other plans!

When Valentine discovers who Barkley’s governess is, he begins to dream of the woman who left her mark on his ten years earlier
Author Burke makes this wonderfully entertaining tale of fated lovers a great and rocky ride. A wonderful addition to this great series.

She opened the door and sucked in a breath. “Val.”
Garbed in the immaculately tailored suit of clothing he’d worn to dinner, he grinned, and her entire body heated in response. “You do remember my name.”
“You shouldn’t be here.” That was all she managed to get out before he pushed past her and strode into the room.
He frowned as he surveyed the chamber. “This is very small.”
“You act as though you’ve never been up here.”
“Not never, but not in some time.” He straightened and gave her a decisive nod. “I’ll move you downstairs.”
Closer to him. That was a terrible notion. “No, you won’t.”
He took a step toward her, the frown returning. “A governess isn’t a servant.”
“Nor is she a member of the family.” Footsteps on the stairs filled her with alarm. “You need to go. You can’t be in here.”
He rotated his head, presenting his ear toward the door and took another step forward. “Is someone coming?”
“Yes,” she hissed.
“Then I can’t very well leave. I’d walk right by whomever it is.” He sounded utterly unconcerned.
Isabelle closed the door with a firm click. Then she spun around to glare at him. “Are you trying to get me tossed out?”
“I would never toss you out. And no, I’m not trying to have your employment terminated. Though I will say I never imagined I’d see you as a governess.” His gaze dipped over her as if he were assessing what he had seen her as—and she didn’t want to know.
Too aware of his lingering attention and the fact that she wore only a night rail covered with a rather thin dressing gown, she crossed her arms across her chest and gave him a cool stare. “You need to go.”
“And I shall. Soon. After we…talk.” He looked around the room once more, and his gaze settled on the diminutive chair situated in the corner next to her miniscule nightstand.
“We have nothing to talk about,” Isabelle said.
He moved to the chair and sat down. “Come now, after a decade, there is plenty to discuss. I could sit here with you all night.”
All night. They’d done that once. But they hadn’t been sitting. Or talking. Well, there had been some talking. And some sitting…of sorts. She blushed at the memory.
He gave her a sly look. “What are you thinking about?”

MAKE ME YOURS (Make Me #3) by Katee Robert

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / B&N / KOBO / Chapters Indigo / Google Play

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date May 1, 2019

I didn’t get to be CEO of a New York tech company by chasing whims…or women. But when wildly beautiful, fiercely independent fitness instructor Becka Baudin caught my eye across a crowded wedding reception, my body reacted with a will of its own.

She wanted a sexy distraction—one night of lust in a glamorous hotel. And I was happy to oblige. Then, after the most amazing night of my life, she walked away—leaving me wanting so much more. I haven’t been myself since that night. My work is suffering. My social life is nowhere. All I think about, all I dream about, is her.

Three months later, she told me. A baby. My baby… I insisted she move into my Manhattan penthouse. Now I see her every day. I crave her every second. I long for her touch, her kiss, her body moving under mine. I know if I try to cage her she’ll fly away. How can I convince a wild thing to stay in my life, in my heart, forever?

•••••••••••••••

REVIEW: MAKE ME YOURS is the third instalment in Katee Robert’s contemporary, adult MAKE ME erotic, romance series. This is tech specialist Aaron LIvingston, and fitness instructor Becka Baudin’s story line. MAKE ME YOURS can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary. Several characters cross-over for familiarity and cohesion.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Aaron and Becka) MAKE ME YOURS follows in the wake of a one-night stand between security specialist Aaron Livingston, and fitness instructor Becka Baudin. Following her sister Lucy’s wedding to Gideon Novak, maid of honour Becka Baudin hooked up with Gideon’s friend Aaron Livingston then ghosted him before breakfast was served. Fast forward twelve weeks wherein Becka announces their one-night stand resulted in an unexpected pregnancy, a pregnancy Becka struggles to accept. What ensues is the building relationship between Becka and Aaron, and the potential fall-out as Becka is unable to let go of preconceived notions, and heart break from the past.

Becka Baudin is a feisty, extremely independent and stubborn female heroine who refuses to accept help when help is both needed or given. Aaron’s attempts to help with Becka’s living situation is met with indignation and insult, something that continues throughout most of their relationship. Becka is always on the offensive, using Aaron’s attempts to help against our story line hero. Aaron Livingston is an alpha male who battles his need to protect and take care of the mother of his child-the woman with whom he will fall in love. A battle of wills, unnecessary confrontation, and the continuous back and forth, yin and yang between our leading couple results in heart break, issues of trust, and a lack of communication.

The relationship between Aaron and Becka is one of immediate attraction; a one-night stand that turns into something more. Becka struggles with her past, and believes she is not worthy of love, and incapable of raising a child; Aaron is over protective, and desperate to look after the woman (and child) who will call to his heart. The $ex scenes are intimate and erotic, without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

The ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters includes Becka’s sister Lucy and her new husband Gideon (Make Me Want #1), Allie and Roman (Make Me Crave #2), as well as Aaron’s business partner Cameron O’Clery, and Aaron’s sister Trish. Trish and Cameron’s story is next in Make Me Need.

MAKE ME YOURS is a fast paced story of family and friendship; desperation and declaration; heart break and love. The premise is entertaining; the characters are energetic but Becka’s need to remain independent and determined is annoying and affected my overall enjoyment; the romance is spicy and hot.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date April 30 ,2019

Hunter Holt might be the most stubborn ex-soldier ever born, but when he’s called on to help find a lost foster kid, he jumps into action. Even if it means working with the woman who broke his heart five years ago—the woman who still haunts his dreams . . .

Faye Smith has spent five long years trying to get her life back on track. She knows she should’ve turned toward Hunter and not away from him. But they both had too many demons to destroy. Maybe now they’ll get another chance—and save someone else’s life too . . .

But first they’ll have to stop arguing long enough to trust the Deep Ops team. Hunter was a lost boy himself once. In fact, he ran away from the exact same man, their monster of a father. Now he and Faye will have to unite to find the brother he never knew—and maybe each other .

••••••••••

REVIEW:  TAKEN is instalment 1.5 in Rebecca Zanetti’s contemporary, adult DEEP OPS romantic suspense series focusing on a new Homeland Defense Department (HDD) unit known as the Requisition Force headed by FBI profiler and Special Agent Angus Force. This is ex-solider Hunter Holt, and former psychologist Faye Smith’s story line. TAKEN can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous instalment is revealed where necessary but I recommend reading the series in order for history and backstory of the secondary characters. For fans and followers of Rebecca Zanetti, there is a slight cross-over with another of the author’s series-see if you can spot the ‘Easter Egg’ 😉 .

Told from several third person points of view including Hunter and Faye TAKEN follows the search for a kidnapper, turned robber turned serial killer, whose willing captive is a sixteen-year old boy unaware of the truth. When Faye gets a call from her former foster mother Miss Angelina that her latest charge is missing, Faye seeks out the only man capable of finding the missing boy but a man whose history with Faye is heartbreaking and dark. Enter ex-soldier turned river-tour guide Hunter Holt, and the man Faye hasn’t stopped loving. What ensues is the rekindling romance between Faye and Hunter, as they join the Requisition Force in the search for a killer whose numbers are increasing on a daily basis.

Faye and Hunter’s history is filled with abuse and addiction. From dysfunctional family dynamics to drugs and abuse, Faye and Hunter would find peace and solace, along with Raider Tanaka, in the arms of their foster mother Miss Angelina. But life, and everything it had to offer tore Faye and Hunter apart, and in the ensuing time neither forgot about their history and their past.

The relationship between Faye and Hunter is one of second chances; a rekindling romance between two people whose earlier lives were filled with neglect and abuse at the hands of people sworn to love and protect. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

There is a large ensemble cast of colorful secondary and supporting characters including Miss Angelina, Jackson Holt and Louise Stockley. We are re-introduced to the Requisition Force leader Angus Force, and team members: former Lieutenant Commander Clarence Wolfe who carries a kitten (aka Kat) in his pocket, and Angus Force’s quirky whiskey guzzling, lipstick eating, high heel wearing German shepherd Roscoe; and Raider Tanaka-Hunter and Faye’s childhood friend, now a member of the Requisition Force Team.

TAKEN is a story of murder, madness and revenge; of suspense and mystery; of second chances and love. The premise is intriguing and exciting; the romance is fated; the characters are energetic, sexy and spirited. TAKEN is a spirited, character driven story that is sure to catch your attention.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date April 30, 2019

Aiden Sinclair was a commercial fisherman before he suddenly came into his billionaire inheritance—not that he’s complaining. Being a Sinclair does have its perks. But things were simpler before the money. He may have been dirt poor, but he loved his job and fully intended to always come back from the sea to his girlfriend, Skye Weston, so they could move toward something more permanent. Or at least that had been the plan . . . until he returned from a two-month fishing trip to discover that she had moved away and was marrying somebody else. It tore his world apart.

Now Skye’s back in town after nearly a decade. She’s a single mother and just as beautiful as ever. However, for some odd reason, she appears to hate him, when it should be Aiden who wants nothing to do with the woman who dumped him. Unfortunately, more than nine years of separation has done nothing to put a damper on their white-hot chemistry when they’re together. But even if those feelings are real, Skye has been keeping secrets. The truth of the past is about to come to light, and there is so much more at stake than just Aiden’s heart.

••••••••••

REVIEW: Entangled begins with Skye running late to her best friend’s (Jade) rehearsal dinner. She finds herself a little dismayed when she arrives and the only seat left is beside Jade’s brother, Aiden. The two of them have a bit of history between them, but Skye has been successful in evading him. She and her daughter, Maya, moved back to her hometown a year ago to run Skye’s mother’s diner that she inherited upon her mother’s death. When she takes her seat, it doesn’t take long for the two of them to be snippy with each other. Skye had left her hometown and Aiden behind nine years earlier to marry someone else, only to end up divorced and her ex in prison.

Aiden can’t figure out why Skye seems to hate him, and he sure wasn’t prepared for those old feelings to come roaring back once he saw her. When Aiden has a conversation with his brother, Seth, he finds out that Skye didn’t actually leave without a word. She had left a letter for Aiden, which Seth ‘handled’, thinking he was protecting Aiden from more heartbreak. When Aiden finds Skye, he tells her that he never received the letter. That’s when Skye finds the wall she’s built up around herself cracking a little. Everything that she thought she knew about Aiden’s character just became a lie. She then makes the decision to let him know what exactly was in that letter she left for him so long ago. For Aiden, that information left him shocked and filled with more questions. For Skye, it meant that her independent spirit was going to be tested. For them together it means that they will always be entangled in one way…….or another.

Entangled is a wonderful story of second chance love. Skye and Aiden were both wonderfully written. Skye is independent and fierce when it comes to those she loves. Aiden’s protectiveness of those he considers his and his fierce love for them shines through with everything he does. Even though there are misunderstandings and bumps along the way, the two of them have chemistry that reaches up and grabs the reader. The secondary characters are very well written and I can’t wait to read more about them. This is the first I’ve ready by Scott, but I don’t think it’ll be the last. Well done, J.S. Scott! Very well done!

My heart sank as I realized there was only one seat available at the dinner table. That’s what I get for running late.

Every chair was taken except the one next to him.

Aiden Sinclair.

The man I’d been trying to avoid ever since I’d come back to Citrus Beach, California, permanently with my daughter, Maya.

He was the thorn in my side.

He was the only part of moving home after almost a decade away that I hated.

He was dangerous.

And I never let myself forget that for even a moment.

I sighed in resignation as I looked around the enormous table—like I was suddenly going to see another vacant place.

Not going to happen. My timing and my luck had never been all that good, so why should that change now?

“Come sit next to Aiden, Skye,” my best friend, Jade Sinclair, requested from her spot next to her billionaire fiancé, Eli Stone.

Jade and Eli were the reason I was here. The only reason. We were two weeks away from their wedding ceremony, and this was an impromptu get-together for everyone involved in planning the festivities or included in the wedding party. Eli’s home in Citrus Beach had been the logical place to meet up since his house was bigger than Jade’s.

Honestly, almost everyone here had the last name of Sinclair except for Jade’s fiancé, Eli’s mother, and Jade’s twin sister, Brooke, since she was wedded to Liam Sullivan now, and … me.

I was still Skye Weston, even though I’d been married and divorced. I’d changed my name back to my maiden name soon after my ex-husband had been put in prison for life.

I looked around the table again, amazed that one family could take up so much space. I was the only child of a mother who had been a single parent, so the Sinclair family was so different from my own.

I’d been an only child, a lonely kid.

Even now, my daughter was really all I had.

How could a family this size not take up a lot of room? Jade had four brothers, and a twin sister. Her half-siblings, cousins, and a bunch of other family hadn’t even shown up yet from the East Coast, and the large dining room was full.

I started making my way slowly down the table reluctantly after I shot a fake smile at Jade. I didn’t want her to know that sitting next to Aiden would be torture for me.

“Sorry I’m late,” I said in a voice loud enough to carry to my best friend. “I got hung up at the restaurant.”

When wasn’t I delayed by work at the Weston Café? I’d put every available moment and penny I had into getting the little diner I’d inherited from my deceased mother to turn a profit.

The only thing more important than work was my daughter, Maya.

I finally sat my ass down, and smiled at Seth, another one of Jade’s older brothers, who was sitting on my left.

I completely avoided looking to my right since I was determined to ignore Aiden.

“How are you doing, Skye?” Seth queried politely.

“I’m good,” I lied.

I’d be doing a lot better if I wasn’t forced into sitting next to Aiden.

••••••••••

REVIEW:  DEBASE is the first instalment in Rachel Van Dyken’s contemporary, adult ELITE BRATVA BROTHERHOOD dark and violent, mafia romance series-a spin off from the authors Eagle Elite series. This is Russian Mafia head of the Petrov family, twenty-two year old, Andrei Petrov, and twenty-one year old, Alice De Lange, whose family has been ex-communicated from the Cosa Nostra. DEBASE can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous series is revealed where necessary but I recommend reading the original series for back story. Several characters and couples cross over for cohesion.

WARNING: DEBASE contains scenes of graphic violence, torture, killing and abuse, as well as exploitation, corruption and sexual slavery which may not be suitable for all readers.

Told from three first person points of view (Andrei, Alice, Phoenix) DEBASE follows in the aftermath of Alice (aka #632) De Lange’s forced imprisonment when she is sold to the Petrov Dynasty in a back room deal made between the two warring families of the Cosa Nostra. Current head of the Petrov family, Andrei Petrov struggles with his place, his direction, and the memories from the past, a past that has shaped a violent, uncaring and tormented man. Unaware of all of his predecessor’s back room deals, Andrei will have to face the reality of the Petrov family heritage, a heritage he battles with every waking moment. Discovering one of the new ‘slaves’ is none other than a member of the ex-communicated De Lange family Andrei makes it his mission to break the woman with whom he will fall in love. What ensues is the building relationship between Andrei and Alice, and the fall-out as sins of the family, and of the past, force the painful and heart breaking reality that reparation for a debt must be paid in blood.

Alice De Lange is an innocent pawn in a war that will see many lives lost, and the possibility of the loss of her own. Falling for her captor means issues of trust continue to grow when sins of the past are brought to the forefront of family negotiations. A kill order for all De Lange family members places our heroine in the direct line of fire. Andrei Petrov is both dangerous and dark; without emotion, and without the ability to feel love or be loved. Execution and torture are his only mode of expression, something taught to Andrei at an early age.

The relationship between Alice and Andrei begins as master and slave; warden and prisoner; enemies up close and personal. In order to save Alice, Andrei must claim the woman as his own, a claim that threatens the stability of the Petrov Dynasty. The $ex scenes are limited, passionate and intense.

There is a large ensemble cast of colorful and energetic secondary and supporting characters including many from the author’s original Eagle Elite series focusing on ruthless members of several Mafia families. As the Russians and Italians work together against a common enemy, many more secrets are revealed that could destroy them all. The author adds a guide to the families, their members both living and gone.

DEBASE is a story of family, blood, cruelty and love; of lies and lessons; of betrayal and revenge. The premise is dark, gritty and raw; the characters are dark, dangerous, and deceptive; the romance is tragic and heart breaking. DEBASE is a dramatic, intense and emotional story of hate, vengeance and hope.

I slid my tongue into her mouth. I tasted, I took, I was greedy with each kiss. With blood on my hands, I held her.
With death in my soul, I drank from her.
With the devil in my heart, I coveted her.
I wanted closer.
More.
My gloves felt too hot for my hands.
My hands too big to contain the weeping leather as I pulled away from Alice and stared into her big blue eyes.
“You don’t want this,” I whispered.
She bit down on her swollen lip and reached for me, I stood still as her warm hands touched both of my cheeks. “Lie.”
I let out a hiss of air at her touch. “Walk. Away.”
“Kiss me again.”
“I can’t do that.” I needed to stop doing that.
“Can’t or won’t?”
I told myself one more kiss, one more touch. I told myself it would be okay, that I was still in control.
That I was above this.
That no woman had ever owned me.
No woman had ever taken everything.
My chest heaved as I stared at her mouth, unable to move, completely rooted to the floor.
Alice moved her hands to my jeans and slowly unbuttoned them. I didn’t stop her, I needed to fucking stop her, but it was like I’d drank this paralyzing poison from her lips and couldn’t function, could only watch her as my soul floated above my body, mocking my inaction, telling me that this would be the end of me.
The very end.
Letting her in.
Keeping her there.
I would give her everything.
And then I would lose control.
Lose my mind.
Lose my heart.
I would lose.
So would she.
“Alice…” My voice cracked. “I wish…” Her hands stilled on my jeans like she was ready to pull them down. “I can’t. I wish I could. I can’t.”
How could she possibly understand?
How could I explain the gut-wrenching fear of looking in the mirror and knowing that one choice kept me sane. One choice.
And that was sex.
He’d made that choice.
I wouldn’t.
I couldn’t.
I couldn’t trust myself, couldn’t trust it wouldn’t happen to me too, and hurt someone like her.
Someone so very… perfect.
Without blinking, Alice gripped my jeans, indecision etched on every pretty part of her face.
She was beautiful.
So damn beautiful.
I gripped her wrists with my hands and pulled them away from the very real temptation of getting completely naked and sinking into her, feeling her clench around me, her tight heat.
Shit.
I pulled her into my arms, and she rested her head on my shoulder. Just because I couldn’t let her touch me, couldn’t cross that line, didn’t mean I couldn’t make her happy, I would kill to watch her face in the throes of multiple orgasms.
I quickly gripped her by the hips and put her up on the cold granite countertop.
“Andrei what are you doing?” She looked down at me uncertainty in her blue eyes.
I moved my hands to her ass and pulled down the black leggings she’d been wearing, all the way down to her ankles, right along with a pair of lacy underwear that were bright pink, and perfect.
“Andrei?”
“Yes?”
“Seriously, what are you doing?”
I gripped her knees with my hands and then spread them wide. “What’s it look like I’m doing?” I smirked. “I’m feasting.”
Her eyes widened.
Never underestimate a virgin with an extremely vivid imagination and heightened sexual appetite.
I wasn’t a fucking monk.
I would like to think I knew more than most men, because I’d seen it all, watched it, inadvertently studied it.
If someone gave me a diagram of a woman, I could point out over twenty-two ways to get her off — with my tongue, a feather, my fingers, take your pick.
“You don’t have to—” She let out a gasp, gripping the edge of the granite, turning her hands white.
I chuckled darkly against her right thigh and bit. “I’m sorry, what was that? I don’t have to?”
“I’ve never, nobody has ever… done. This.”
“Tell me,” I asked gently before I dipped my tongue inside her and flicked.
Her entire body jerked.
“Tell me he never touched you like this, tell me nobody has ever touched you like this.”
“Never,” she rasped. “You.” That word was like a gunshot going off in my soul. “Only you, Andrei.”
“Me.” I flicked my tongue again, and gripped her by the ass, pulling her almost completely off the counter while I sat beneath her and sucked her off in the most primitive aggressive way I knew how.
With every ounce of energy I had in my physical body.
With my soul.
I used every weapon in my arsenal.

Clint knows where Beth is currently living and working, and sets himself up to work along side the woman he is hoping to destroy but the heart wants something more than vengeance-the heart wants a happily ever after with the woman with whom he will fall in love. The Sex scenes are passionate and intense, without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

There is a large ensemble cast of colorful secondary and supporting characters including all of Beth’s half-slblings: Maxon and Keely Reed (More Than Want You #1), Griffin and Britta (More Than Need You #2), Noah and Harlow (More Than Love You #3), Evan and Nia (More than Crave You #4); CFO Sebastian Shaw; Beth’s best friend Stephan Lund; as well as Clint’s brothers Bret and Bry, and his best friend Asher. Stephen’s story is next in MORE THAN PLEASURE YOU.

MORE THAN TEMPT YOU is a story of betrayal and revenge; loss and grief; deception, revelations; forgiveness and love. The premise is emotional and engaging; the romance is passionate and seductive; the characters are energetic and charismatic. MORE THAN TEMPT YOU is an animated and spicy tale of vengeance and love.

“Can one of you keep an eye on Beth? She’s getting hit on a lot, which I told her to expect. But one creepy guy who was here last night is here again today. He seems awfully determined.”
“The one in the loud Hawaiian shirt with the matching personality?” my buddy asks.
“That one. He parked his ass in her station as soon as we opened. He’s been messing with her ever since.”
“I’ll take care of it,” I chime in.
First, when I bartended on the side in the past, I saw a lot of the girls struggle with dirtbags who refused to understand that no means no. Second, coming to her rescue will be a great way to meet Bethany and start gaining her trust. I refuse to think about how excited my libido is to spend time with her.
“Thanks, Clint.”
With that, Andy dismisses us. Ash and I file down the hall.
My buddy laughs. “You in the role of Bethany’s protector. Oh, the irony…”
“Hey, I’m not out to hurt her. I just want justice. I have no doubt she helped to swindle those people, so she deserves to pay as the law provides.”
“Fair enough. But, um…she clearly flips your switch. How are you going to keep your paws off her?”
Bethany Banks turning me on visually is fucking inconvenient. I’m sure that once I start talking to the woman, her personality will quickly turn me off. “I’ll work it out.”
“Ready for the madhouse?”
I follow Ash behind the bar. “Let’s do it.”
It takes me less than ten minutes to learn the ropes. Then Ash introduces me to the other waitress on duty, Montana. She’s a sultry brunette with dark eyes, golden skin, and big tits. Honestly, she’s usually my speed in women.
And yet as we’re chatting and she’s flirting, my gaze keeps straying to Bethany. What is it about her? She’s beautiful, but what else? Is it her aloofness? Maybe. I want to figure her out so I can understand why a brilliant woman, surely capable of making her own fortune, would help her father fleece people. The angry part of me wants to grasp how she managed not to get caught. Mostly, I fear the attraction is chemical and, regardless of what logic tells me, I want to nail her.
When Montana jaunts off with a wink. Ash pulls me aside. “Are you that rusty? Montana would totally do you, and you blew her off.”
I know, and the fact I’m not interested annoys me. “I’m not here for sex. Introduce me to ‘Beth’ and let’s get this farce going.”
As we approach, she sets a beer down in front of a guy who’s fortyish in a Hawaiian shirt—like a lot of the tourists here. He eyes her with excruciating intensity. She meets his gaze with an arched brow raised.
My gut tells me she’s not only not interested, but she’s silently rebuffing him.
Mug delivered, Bethany turns to leave. The man grips her wrist hard, his muscles flexing, veins popping, knuckles white. When she winces and tries to wriggle free, he clamps tighter and stands, jerking her toward him.
Fuck that. Even if Bethany Banks is guilty of a multitude of sins, she doesn’t deserve to be manhandled by this jerk against her will.
I barge my way between them, shoving her behind me. “Do we have a problem here, sir?”
Fury pinches his mouth. He narrows his eyes. “This has nothing to do with you. Butt out.”
“You don’t have permission to maul the staff. I’m going to have to ask you to keep your hands to yourself or leave.”
“Do you have your head so far up her twat that you don’t see she’s a fucking bitch?” The guy scoffs and rolls his eyes. “Yeah, and you deserve everything you get when she chews you up and spits you out.”
With that, the asshole tosses down some money and starts to walk away.
I’m furious. In part because he accused me of wanting her when I do. But mostly I’m pissed on Bethany’s behalf. “That was uncalled for. You’re not welcome back here unless you apologize to her.”
He grits his teeth, upper lip curling up with contempt as he turns to Bethany. “Fine. A thousand apologies.”
The douche doesn’t mean a word of that, and I want to pound his face. No, I’m not looking to become Bethany’s knight in shining armor. But this kind of guy always grates on my nerves because he thinks he can treat all women like trash, and the only thing that matters less than them are their feelings. I hate pricks like him.
Unfortunately, I can’t do anything else right now without ramping up the incident, instigating a fight…and probably getting fired. Instead, once he leaves, I turn to Bethany. I’m pissed all over again when I see she’s gone tense, as if she’s trying to hold herself together, and sporting a big red handprint around her small wrist.
“You okay?”
She nods. It’s shaky at first, then she drags in a steadying breath. “Yeah. He might be the first to think he can demand something more than a drink. But like Andy said, he won’t be the last. I’ll get used to it. Thanks for stepping in. I’m Beth.”
When she holds out her hand, I have to admit I’m impressed by her backbone. I’ve seen new waitresses shrink, cry, and ultimately quit when confronted with a customer that vile. Bethany simply picked herself up and now looks determined to carry on.
“You’re welcome. I’m Clint. It’s my first day.” I shake her hand.
We touch. Heat flares and rolls through me, instant and scorching. If I wanted to fuck her before, it’s nothing compared to the lust burning me now.

SINGLE LADY SEEKS DUKE

Lady Delilah Montebank has her marital sights set on the Duke of Branville. There’s just one problem: he barely knows she exists. But no matter, she’s got a plan to win him over with her charm, her wit—and perhaps the love potion she has in her possession wouldn’t hurt her cause…

Lord Thomas Hobbs, Duke of Huntley, thinks his best friend Delilah’s quest to become a duchess is ridiculous. He’s always said he’d rather give up all the brandy in London than commit to one person for life. Besides, he knows that Delilah’s love potion can’t possibly win over Branville…since she accidentally gave it to him instead. But perhaps this is the excuse he needs to show her he’s always loved her…

Delilah can’t believe she gave the potion to the wrong duke. Then again, Delilah could do a lot worse than win the hand of her handsome best friend. Could it be that the right duke has been before her eyes all along?

REVIEW: This delightful story begins in June 1827, London. It’s a cleverly written story of the romance of best friends with the underlying story of A Midsummer Night’s Dream as both a theme and part of the plot.

Without doing too many spoilers, let me tell you how this sets up.

Lady Delilah Montebank (I love that name) is a wonderfully free spirited twenty-two-year-old with a mother who is seemingly fashioned from the personality of Cruella Deville. Her mother plans to secure herself a marriage and secure a husband for her daughter as well. At what cost? She doesn’t care.

If Lady Delilah doesn’t secure an offer better than the one her mother has arranged, she will end up married to the plump, sweaty little heir to an earldom. She and her friend Lady Lucy Hunt have been matchmaking for seasons for many of their friends. So, Delilah feels sure they can accomplish the match for her. She tells her mother she has set her sights on the Duke of Branville.

Thomas Hobbs, the Duke of Huntley is Delilah’s best male friend. He has decidedly not made a match for himself and feels he will never marry. Thomas’s father died when Thomas was only eighteen. Since then, Thomas has taken care of the family holdings and his mother and sisters. He must also see to arranging a marriage for his overbearing, somewhat thin sister, Lavina. Their younger sister, Alexandra was already married to Thomas’s good friend Lord Owen Monroe. He has not been receptive of a match for himself, because he’s secretly in love with Delilah.
Delilah asks Thomas to help her win the affections of the Duke of Branville. He agrees reluctantly, but only if she and Lucy will find a match for his sister. Meanwhile, he plans to woo Delilah for himself.

All this is going on while Delilah and her friends are trying to accomplish a play for charity. Since her mother would disapprove of such a thing, they must accomplish doing the play in secret. What is the play? Ah, the plot thickens…A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

That’s the basic setup. The great fun of this story is in the plans within plans. Webs to ensnare, ensnare the wrong people. It’s both laughable and sometimes heartbreaking. However, author Valerie Bowman has woven a clever and intricate story that is thoroughly entertaining.

Grab a copy of this clever story and enjoy the fun of reading it for yourself.

CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

Delilah glanced up and down the dim hallway. It was well past three in the morning, she was still dressed in the pink ball gown she’d worn to the party, and she clutched the small vial of Cupid’s Elixir in her sweaty, guilty palm. She pressed her back against the shadowed wall not far from the Duke of Branville’s bedchamber. She could do this. More importantly, she would do this. She’d come this far, hadn’t she? What did a little sneaking about in the middle of the night matter?
She’d got detailed instructions to Branville’s room from Derek, who thankfully hadn’t asked any questions about why she wanted to know. According to him, the room was four doors to the right, just past the staircase on the third floor. The third floor was where all the bachelor gentlemen were sleeping. It would be a complete scandal if she was found lurking about alone at this time of night, but she’d waited until the household seemed quite asleep and then waited a bit longer for good measure. Anyone who saw her now would be skulking about themselves, which meant they would hardly be in a position to judge her. She briefly wondered if she’d run into Lavinia.
It was not as if she was out to do anything particularly scandalous. It was more silly and frivolous than anything else. She’d simply die, however, if Branville woke up and asked her what she was doing sprinkling pixie water in his eyes. She’d already decided to pretend as if she were dreaming, thinking she was Puck in the play. Sleepwalking. That would make all the sense in the world. Wouldn’t it? She swallowed hard. Probably not, but she wasn’t about to let the fear of being caught stop her. Besides, all of her and Lucy’s matchmaking had turned into a colossal mess. If a spray of perfume could sort it out, so be it. Of course, Delilah’s conscience reminded her that she hadn’t offered any of the perfume to Rebecca to use on Thomas. She didn’t want to even contemplate that. She’d already shared it with one other person, and that made her guilty enough. The image of Madame Rosa’s disapproving, craggy face had haunted her all evening.
Delilah shook off the thought and turned her attention back to the matter at hand. Pressing her empty palm against the darkened wall, she inched her way along until she came to Branville’s door. She felt like a spy. This was how professional spies did such things, wasn’t it? Too bad she was too embarrassed by her actions to ask the veritable house full of professional spies who happened to be asleep behind other doors right now.
She transferred the vial into her opposite hand and slowly reached to grasp the door handle. The metal was cold in her bare hand. She’d discarded her gloves, deciding that they would make her actions more clumsy. The last thing she needed tonight was to be more clumsy than usual. Decidedly, she needed to be less so.
She clutched the door handle like a lifeline and closed her eyes, steadying her shaking fingers on the knob. She was close, so close. Praying that the door wouldn’t squeak, she turned the handle slowly. The only sound was the thumping of her own heart in her ears.
When the handle was turned as far as it would go, she pushed it, praying fervently that it wasn’t locked. It took a moment before she realized the door was opening. Its hinges silent, merci a Dieu. Completely silent.
She slipped inside the cool, dark room. Steady, deep breathing came from the bed. Thank goodness, she hadn’t woken the duke with her entrance. She could barely see a thing, but she didn’t dare light a candle. A tiny stream of moonlight filtered into the room through a small opening in the curtains on the far window. She used that to identify the hulking bed in the center of the room. She tiptoed over to it slowly, taking care in case there was anything to trip over. No doubt she would find it if there was.
She made it to the foot of the bed without incident and paused, trying to quell her nerves and dispel her guilt. She clutched the vial more tightly in her palm, shaking with fear and anxiety. Now that she was here, she had no earthly idea how to drop liquid on a man’s eyes without awakening him. Besides, how much of it was she supposed to use? Surely not much. She would employ the tiniest drops possible so as not to disturb him, but she also needed to ensure the perfume touched his eyelids. Tricky business, this being a fairy. She had a sudden appreciation for Puck.
Holding her breath, she lifted her skirts with her free hand and tiptoed to the right side of the bed. Because it was summer, the bed curtains weren’t drawn. The window was open, and a slight breeze blew through the crack in the curtains.
The outline of the duke’s body was barely visible in the moonlight. He was turned away on his side, his back to her, his face toward the window. She would have to lean over his body to sprinkle the elixir on his eyes. The bed was tall. She must carefully climb up to do this task properly. She only hoped she didn’t jostle the mattress enough to wake him.
She waited in silence for a few moments to ensure his breathing remained steady, then she carefully lifted first one knee and then the other, bracing them on the mattress and pulling herself up, still clutching the vial. She winced as he moved slightly in his sleep, but he kept his face turned away. Blast it.
Once she was fully atop the bed, she paused and hoped the hammering of her heart didn’t wake him. He smelled good, a combination of soap and maleness that she wanted to breathe in. There was something vaguely familiar about his scent.
Shaking away that unhelpful thought, she moved gingerly across the mattress on her knees until she came to a stop at his side. His shirt was off. The beam of moonlight hit his smooth, muscled arm. She swallowed. The man’s chest was positively swoon-worthy. She took a deep breath to calm her nerves and uncorked the vial. Then she carefully leaned over as far as she could to locate his eyes. They remained shrouded in the dark, but she took a guess as to their general direction and tipped the little vial as slowly and carefully as she could. He turned then, and she was afforded enough light to see that the first tiny drop of liquid did indeed fall directly onto his eyelid.
He blinked, and she held her breath. When he settled back into sleep, she closed her eyes and said a brief prayer that she would get away with it a second time before tipping the vial once more to allow another tiny drop to fall on his other eyelid.
He blinked and rubbed at his eyes while Delilah held her breath again, paralyzed with fear. Soon, he settled back into his pillow and his breathing returned to its steady pace.
She pressed a hand to her throat. It was over. She was done. All she had to do was extract herself from the bed and the room without being seen or heard. The difficult part was behind her.
Still praying he wouldn’t stir, she backed away from the duke. Slowly. Slowly. She’d nearly made it to the edge of the bed when he flipped over to face her. A beam of moonlight slid over his sleeping features.
Delilah gasped.

Q: How is NO OTHER DUKE BUT YOU, your upcoming novel, different than your previous novels, or can you say anything more about it?

A:NO OTHER DUKE BUT YOU is the final book in the Playful Brides series. It’s book #11, and while it can be read as a standalone, I know the long-time readers of the series have been waiting for this couple’s story. Delilah is my most asked about heroine.

Q: Where did you get your inspiration from for NO OTHER DUKE BUT YOU?

A:Most of the books in the Playful Brides series are inspired by famous plays. This one is inspired by A Midsummer Night’s Dream, which is one of my favorites. I’ve had the plot in mind for a long time.

Q: What makes Lady Delilah and Lord Thomas special? Can you say anything more about them?

A:Delilah is sassy, unconventional, and a bit of a mess compared to the other young ladies on the marriage mart. But she has a heart of gold and good intentions to be the best matchmaker in the land, until it’s time for her own match to be made, of course! Thomas is her best friend who has been madly (and secretly) in love with her for years. He appreciates her for who she is.

Q: Who would you cast for Delilah and Thomas in the movie version?

A: I love this question! I’ve set up a Pinterest board for the entire Playful Bridesseries with the pictures of who I think of as the main characters. In my mind, Delilah looks like Ellen Page and Thomas is Justin Bartha.

Q: What is one thing the heroine, Delilah, can’t live without?

A:Sigh. Thomas. Though she doesn’t know it at first.

Q: NO OTHER DUKE BUT YOU is the last novel in your wonderful Playful Brides series. How do you feel about the series coming to an end?

A:I’ve loved these characters for years and it’s bittersweet to see the series end, but I’m also looking forward to writing something new!

Q: Would you say it was more or less difficult writing NO OTHER DUKE BUT YOU knowing it’s the last in the series?

A:Yes! I was worried that the readers wouldn’t like it or think it’s a fitting end to the series. But in the end, I wrote the book I wanted to write to wrap up the series and I can’t wait to share it with everyone!

Q: If you could work with any other famous author, who would it be and why?

A:Lisa Kleypas! She’s just my all-time favorite. Love, love, love all of her books.

Q: What was your favorite scene you wrote, and why?

A:I don’t want to give anything away. But there is a scene involving some magic perfume and sneaking around at a country house late at night and it was just pure fun to write the fall out after that.

Q: What was the hardest scene to write in NO OTHER DUKE BUT YOU, and why?

A:Oh, the last chapter. Not the epilogue, but the last chapter. I wanted it to be perfect. The epilogue is something I’ve had in mind for ages so that was simple.

Q: When working on a manuscript, is it easy for you to keep separate ideas for other projects, or what strategies do you use to stay focused?

A:I usually just jot down a new idea and file it in a folder on my computer. I don’t let much distract me from what I’m working on at the moment. But I always seem to get a new idea when I’m fading off to sleep or driving. It’s never convenient. Ha!

Q: How did you come up with the idea of a love potion to get Delilah and Thomas’s romance rolling?

A:It’s inspired by the love potion in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, which is just a purely fun play that I adore!

Q: Are you currently working on any other projects you would like to share with your readers?

A:Yes! I’m working on a contemporary romantic comedy called HIRING MR. DARCY. It’s about a history professor who has two weeks to turn her brother’s hot best friend into a suitable Darcy for a competition in Bath, England so she can beat her ex and his new starlet girlfriend. It’ll be out this year!I’m also noodling over a new Regency series that’s going to be outrageous fun!

Q: Do you have a final comment you would like to give your readers?

A:If you read NO OTHER DUKE BUT YOU, I’d love to hear what you think! You can find me at www.ValerieBowmanBooks.comwhere there are links to email me, tweet me, or find me on Facebook or Instagram.
