Erik

“Astrid, you need to eat.” I sit down at the kitchen table beside my niece and push her plate closer to her, but the six-year-old just stares blankly at the old raggedy doll she clutches to her chest.
She’s barely said any words since my sister and brother-in-law were killed by a drunk driver six weeks ago. The girl has grown more and more sullen, drawing deeper into her sorrow each day.
Unlike the two unruly boys that run around the kitchen, tormenting each other, and causing as much havoc as they can, Astrid has internalized her pain. And I have no idea what I’m supposed to do.
Finn, my eight-year-old nephew, holds a candy bar above his brother’s head, taunting him. “You can’t have it because you’re too little.”
“Finn, Lars, go outside,” I order, running a palm over my beard, and wondering how I’m going to survive this. I should be out on the water with my men, bringing in a haul of cod, not looking after my sister’s children. But one selfish asshole changed all of our lives forever.
“Give it to me,” Lars shouts before using all of his weight to tackle his older brother.
The four-year-old is all Johansen, sturdy and blond, with eyes like mine and Nora’s, the color of the sky just before a storm rolls in. And I have no doubt he’ll match my six-foot-four build when he’s older.
Finn, on the other hand, is built more like his father, slim, and tall, with dark hair, and clear blue eyes that are constantly looking for trouble.
The boys roll on the ground, and I grab the two of them, pulling them apart before any punches are thrown. God, what would Nora do right now? Or Daniel? He’d have these two under control with one stern look.
I’d wondered what my sister saw in the American when she’d first brought him home, but the man had quickly become one of my closest friends. And together we’d grown our company, bringing economic growth and prosperity to the small fishing village forty miles south of Oslo. And while we grew our fleet, Nora had built a home.
A happy one.
A family that any man would be jealous of.
Anyone but me. I’d been content with my life at sea. Sure, one day I figured I’d find a good woman and settle down. But I’d never imagined I’d be twenty-six and taking on the responsibilities of three young children.
Children that are still squirming in my arms, trying to strike out at each other.
“Outside, now,” I say, putting them down. I break the candy bar in half and give each of the boys a piece, then point toward the door. “And take Odin with you.”
The hound’s ears perk up at the sound of his name, and he follows my nephews out the front door, wagging his tail.
I can see them through the large kitchen window as they race across the yard, Odin following behind, crisis temporarily averted.
Leaning on the counter, I take a deep breath.
Everything will be okay. But even as I think it, I’m not sure if it will be.
I need help.
The woman from the nanny placement services arrives tomorrow. And I’m hoping that things will be able to get back to normal, or whatever my new normal will look like.
It was Daniel’s mother who’d recommended the agency. After the accident, she’d come to Norway to help with the children, but she’d only stayed a few weeks before returning to the States.
There’d been some talk about her taking the kids back to Seattle with her. Part of me wondered if it would be for the best, because honestly, what do I know about raising kids?
But I know my sister would want her children to be raised here-in the home she built, surrounded by the green hills and open sea. She may have married an American, but her heart always belonged to Norway.
So I’d done as her will had asked, and moved into their house, taking over the responsibilities of mother and father.
And I’m drowning.
“I want my mamma,” Astrid says so softly I barely hear her.
With a sigh, I turn and place a hand on top of her head, willing myself to be what she needs. Knowing I’m far from it. “I know, sweetheart. I wish she was here too.” I crouch down so I’m eye level with her. “But even though she’s not here, I know she wouldn’t want you to get sick. And if you don’t eat, you will. So will you please take a bite for me?”
Fine wisps of blonde hair fall over her face, and there are tears in her eyes when she finally looks at me. “Okay, Onkel Erik.” She takes a slice of the bread from her plate and takes a small bite before putting it back.
“Good girl.” I kiss the top of her head before standing. It’s a small victory.
The boys are still in the front, and I groan when I see Lars. He’s covered head to toe in mud, and from what I can tell he’s got fists full of it and is chasing Finn. The phone rings before I can yell out at him.
“Ja?” I say, answering the phone.
“We need you down at the harbor,” Filip says on the other end. “One of the boats is having engine problems.”
“Then call the mechanic. I can’t make it in today.”
Filip sighs. “The men need to see you, Erik. I know you’re dealing with a lot right now, but there’s been talk—”
“What kind of talk?”
He hesitates before answering. “You’re a good man, Erik. But we all know that you’re a better fisherman than a businessman. Daniel kept the books—”
“You can tell whoever’s been talking that they don’t need to worry. They’ll get their paychecks on time.” A car has pulled up the driveway, and I frown. I’m not expecting anyone.
“I told you, I’ll be there Tuesday.” “It is Tuesday,” he says with a sigh.
I glance at the calendar and curse under my breath. How did I lose a whole day? Not only that, I was supposed to be at the airport three hours ago to pick up the woman the agency sent.
“Dritt,” I mutter more loudly, causing Astrid to raise her brows at me. “I’ll call you back,” I say before ending the call. “Astrid, get your shoes on, we need to go.”
She slips off the chair. “Go where?”
“To the airport. We have to—” Through the window, I see what happens next in slow motion. But no matter how fast I move, I know I can’t stop it from happening.
Both Lars and Finn are hidden behind a bush, and I see the trouble in their eyes, and the mud in their hands. When the back door of the car opens, a pretty woman steps out.
Strawberry blonde hair whips in the wind, crystal clear blue eyes scan the yard. She’s tall and lean and has an elegance to her that takes my breath away. And she’s about to have mud slung at her.
I push open the screen door, yelling at my nephews as mud balls are flung through the air. The first one hits her arm, and I’m halfway out the door yelling at the boys when the second one lands square on her cheek.
Dritt.
She sucks in a breath, those blue eyes going wide with shock. Her delicate hand reaches up and wipes away the mud from her cheek, then her gaze locks on mine and I see her step back, her hand on the door handle of the taxi.
“Vær så snill,” I say, storming toward her. “What?” she asks, her voice soft and smooth. Like she needs someone to hold onto her, to keep her here. That person is me.
“Please,” I say in English. “Don’t go.” I contacted the agency because I needed help this summer.
But one look at her tells me I need a hell of a lot more than help.
I need her.

REVIEW: TAKE ME DOWN is the second full-length instalment in Carly Phillips contemporary, adult THE KNIGHT BROTHERS erotic, romance series focusing on the Knight siblings, owners of Knight Time Technology. This is former world champion skier Parker Knight, and pastry chef Emily Stevens’ story line. TAKE ME DOWN can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Emily and Parker) TAKE ME DOWN follows Parker Knight as he is tasked with locating a suitable venue for Knight Time Technology’s corporate retreat. Having rerouted himself toward Denver Colorado, Parker found himself stranded with car trouble in the small town of Montlake. Needing a place to stay our hero landed at the local B&B run by father and daughter James and Emily Stevens. What ensues is the tempestuous but building relationship between Emily and Parker, and the potential fall-out as Parker’s time in Colorado comes to a close.

Emily Stevens doesn’t do relationships, and under the circumstances, has refused all outside attempts at seduction and dating. A previous relationship has left her emotionally unavailable, that is until, Parker Knight arrives on the scenes. Parker Knight also struggles with a former relationship in that he is still paying for sins of the past. Meeting Emily Stevens gives Parker hopes for a future, that will quickly be dampened when his time in Colorado comes with an expiry date.

The relationship between Parker and Emily is one of immediate attraction but Emily’s feisty and off-putting attitude leaves something to be desire. Believing Parker is nothing but a spoiled, rich city boy, Emily battles between head and heart as it pertains to her growing attraction to our story line hero. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate, without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

All of Parker’s siblings play secondary and supporting characters including the long suffering eldest brother Ethan Knight. We are introduced to Emily’s father James, as well as her best friend and café owner Harper Sanders. Ethan’s story is next in the author’s Dare/Knight crossover novel DARE ME TONIGHT.

TAKE ME DOWN is a story of family, friendship, struggle and betrayal. There are moments romance and love; betrayal and vengeance; realization and forgiveness. The premise is engaging ; the romance is seductive; the character are spunky, sassy and energetic.

“I like the dreamy look on your face.”
“It isn’t often I’m thrown into a good memory of my mom,” he admitted.
More often than not he thought about the bitter ones of his dad and his lack of attention, his many wives, and losing the one parent who loved him unconditionally.
“Do you know the key ingredient that differentiates a Snickerdoodle from a sugar cookie?” she asked.
He shook his head. “Can’t say that I do.” That memory escaped him.
“Cream of Tartar. It’s a leavening agent that gives the cookie its signature tangy flavor and chewy texture.”
“She made them every Christmas,” he said, hearing his own wistful tone. “We left them out for Santa.”
Emily smiled at his memory. “I’ll make them for you one day if –“ She shook her head.
If you’re still here went unsaid.
“Can I take this to mean you’re not mad at me anymore?” he asked, leaning in on one arm.
She poured the brownie mix into the pan and sighed. “I was never mad at you. At first I was just scared to death. Then I was frustrated with dad and the situation. You being here, supporting his dream doesn’t help. But I’m not angry at you.”
The heaviness in his chest eased. But he was going to throw her an even more difficult question. He wasn’t sure if he expected an answer and given he didn’t know if he could answer in return, it wasn’t exactly fair.
“Okay then, good. What about before we came back? Are you still running from what we felt?”
She’d stuck a chocolate covered finger into her mouth and at the question, her eyes opened wide. The question had been bad timing on his part because his dick hardened at the sight of that finger in her mouth. He wanted her lips wrapped around his cock.
But, they had important things to discuss. “Running?” she asked on a squeak.
He pushed himself to standing and strode around the island, coming up to her and pushing her back against the counter. “Running,” he confirmed. “Not physically but emotionally.”
“I can’t let myself get too attached to you, Parker. You’re leaving. Sooner not later. Just because we don’t discuss it doesn’t make it not true. I need to protect myself.”
Her words sliced through him because they were true. Because he hated them. Because she was right and he didn’t want her to be. So he did the only thing he could do in the moment.
“But we have now.”

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date May 26, 2019

Snowed in rocker makes unplanned baby with saucy waitress. News at 11.

I could see the tabloids now.

Yeah, I play guitar and sing occasionally. But my main role is as a producer for other musicians.

That’s why I came to Crescent Cove—to help rockstar Kellan McGuire with his first solo project.

Not to get stuck in a surprise snowstorm with a smart, funny lass with big brown eyes and a very flexible…body.

The next night, I was on a flight back to LA.

I returned to town months later. To help Kellan. Right.

And to lose myself in Ivy again and again, even when the cops tried to thwart us. (They only temporarily succeeded.)

The next time I come back, ready to fight for my woman, Ivy has a swollen belly.

I’ve spent my life running, and second chances come at a price. But I won’t give up until I’ve made her mine. Forever.

Her and our baby.

Author’s Note: Surprise! Producer Rory Ferguson is the first character to cross over from our Oblivion World…but he isn’t the last! He doesn’t start out as a daddy, but his unexpected baby with Ivy will be his biggest production yet.

Author’s note part deux: Rockstar Baby is a romantic comedy with a HEA and no cliffhanger

••••••••••

REVIEW: ROCKSTAR BABY is the sixth instalment in Taryn Quinn’s (Cari Quinn & Taryn Elliott) contemporary, adult CRESCENT COVE (previously Dirty Dilfs) erotic, romance series focusing on the town of Crescent Cove. This is music producer and Irishman Rory Ferguson, and waitress / ice cream maker Ivy Beck’s story line. ROCKSTAR BABY can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous instalments is revealed where necessary. Several characters including Rory Ferguson cross-over from the authors’ Oblivion World series but you do not have to have read the previous series to follow… for back story and cohesion, I recommend reading for your own enjoyment.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Rory and Ivy) ROCKSTAR BABY follows the building relationship between music producer Rory Ferguson, and waitress Ivy Beck. Rory Ferguson was only in town for a few hours. Rockstar Kellan McGuire’s solo career was about to take off, and music producer Rory Ferguson was desperate enough to leave the warmth of LA and venture cross-country to the snowy parts of Crescent Cove, New York. What Rory never expected was to find himself caught in a blizzard, and into the arms of local waitress Ivy Beck. A quick insta-lust relationship would bring Rory back into Ivy’s life on a number of occasions but Rory knew his lifestyle wasn’t conducive to a woman like Ivy Beck. Fast forward several months wherein Ivy discovers she is pregnant with Rory’ child, a child he had never expected or planned for the future. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Rory and Ivy, and the potential fall-out when Rory walks away from the woman he loves not knowing the secret she was about to reveal.

The relationship between Rory and Ivy is one of insta-lust; a palpable sexual attraction that burned fiery hot from the first time they met. Ivy knew Rory wasn’t in town for the long haul but Rory kept secret his connections to the stars of music and rock. Already having issues of trust now that Rory had left without looking back, Ivy tried, but Rory refused to answer her calls, having issues of trust of his own. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate, without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

We are introduced to Ivy’s brothers Caleb and August, and from the Oblivion series: Kellan McGuire and his wife Maggie, Ian Kagan and his girlfriend Zoe Manning: Hummingbird’s Nest B&B owners Sage and Oliver Hamilton; and bar owner Mitch.

ROCKSTAR BABY is a story of family, friendship, miscommunication and issues of trust. The premise is engaging and entertaining; the romance is seductive and steamy; the characters are colorful, energetic and charismatic. ROCKSTAR BABY is a fun, emotional, and fantastic addition to Taryn Quinn’s CRESCENT COVE series.

ABOUT THE BOOK: RELEASE DATE January 30 2019

My life changed when I posted an ad on Crescent Cove’s Facebook Wanted page.

I wasn’t looking for a used car, but what I was looking for counted as a need too, right?

BABY DADDY WANTED
Single, personable woman seeking a man for the purposes of procreation. I wouldn’t mind if he looked like Chris Pratt, but that’s not required. No further interaction with the child is required, unless desired by father-to-be. Child will be created the old-fashioned way, assuming both parties agree. Contact V at goodtothelastdrop.

I wasn’t expecting much, to tell the truth.

For a week, I got no bites.

No licks—or clicks.

Nothing.

Then I got a reply.

We started to email. Text. Maybe almost…sext.

He was sweet. Funny. Suddenly, the idea of doing the naked make-a-baby rumba with him seemed like more fun than function.

Then I found out who he was.

He found out who I was.

And tomorrow, I’m going to see him at work.

Any important information from the previous instalments is revealed where necessary.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Murphy and Veronica) BABY DADDY WANTED follows in the wake of Veronica Dixon’s misdirected Facebook post in which she solicits applications for a baby daddy. Believing there are no soul mate matches in Crescent Cove, and the only man to which she is attracted barely gives her the time of day, Veronica places an ad that quickly spirals out of control. Enter Veronica’s crush, Murphy Masterson, a man who struggles in the face of attraction to the woman that calls to his heart. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Veronica and Murphy as they dance around the idea of making a baby.

The premise is fun, fast paced and engaging; the romance is flirty and hot; the characters are energetic, sweet and animated. Her unique gift is part of a secret so dangerous that she’s been in hiding for years in an isolated compound fiercely guarded by Wardens—gargoyle shape-shifters who protect humankind from demons. If the demons discover the truth about Trinity, they’ll devour her, flesh and bone, to enhance their own powers.

When Wardens from another clan arrive with disturbing reports that something out there is killing both demons and Wardens, Trinity’s safe world implodes. Not the least because one of the outsiders is the most annoying and fascinating person she’s ever met. Zayne has secrets of his own that will upend her world yet again—but working together becomes imperative once demons breach the compound and Trinity’s secret comes to light. To save her family and maybe the world, she’ll have to put her trust in Zayne. But all bets are off as a supernatural war is unleashed…

Review:

Storm and Fury by Jennifer L. Armentrout is the first book in her new Harbinger series, which is a YA fantasy paranormal story.  This is a spin off from Armentrout’s Dark Elements series, which I have not read, but this read very well without reading the previous series, but if I have time, I need to read that series. Storm and Fury revolves around Wardens (Gargoyles) and Demons

We meet our heroine, Trinity Marrow, who is 18 years old, and has lived most of her life among the Wardens, who are protectors of the human race against the demons.  Trinity has hidden abilities that only a select few know.  She is a trueborn (half human, half angel), and can see ghost and spirits, as well as being very powerful.  Trinity has trained to fight since she was young with the Wardens, and is just as good or better than some of them. Misha, one of the Gargoyle wardens is her protector and is bonded to her.  Trinity makes a wonderful heroine, as she is not only strong, smart, independent, confident, but she also has to deal with an eye disease that slowly degenerates.

Zayne, our hero, is part of another Warden group that come to visit to ask for help; since someone is killing Wardens and Demons.  Zayne quickly becomes interested in Trinity, because she doesn’t fit with the other people at their complex; since he has no idea what Trinity is.  There is an immediate attraction between Zayne and Trinity, which neither understand, especially when Zayne says there is a familiarity about her.  In a short time, Zayne and his group will discover the truth about Trinity and after an attack at the compound, they will offer to protect and help her, since Misha was kidnapped and Trinity is determined to find him.

What follows is a wild exciting intense action-packed adventure, with a number of surprising twists. I loved Zayne and Trinity together, even if it was slow burn, since Zayne has a past love that went awry (part of previous series); but once they allowed themselves to succumb to their feelings, it was combustible. I also loved the secondary characters, especially Peanut (a ghost), Roth, Layla, Dez, etc.

Storm and Fury is a fantastic start to this new series revolving around Gargoyles, Demons, Angels and Ghosts, as well as the wonderful & sexy romance between Zayne and Trinity.  Trinity continuing to grow into her powers was great, and I cannot wait to learn more in the future books.  Jennifer L. Armentrout once again gives us a fun, heartwarming, romantic,  as well as intense action filled story that keeps us on the edge of our seat.  I look forward to the next book in this series.
