But when her new friend, Maris, dares her to take a chance with the drive-in’s charismatic new owner, everything changes for Joy and her young son. A difficult childhood has left Maris Kennedy with definite priorities. Her job running Summer’s End, the camp store and cafe, comes first. Always. Nothing could ever make her risk that hard-won security–especially not her free-spirited colleague. But the more she encourages Joy to open herself up to new experiences, the more Maris begins to wonder what she, too, might be missing. Learning how to trust will bring Joy and Maris together.

And soon they form a friendship that leaves them as close as sisters–and open to love where they least expect it…in Summer’s End.

Callum

“I don’t want a new nanny.” Amelia stomps her foot and pouts up at me. My daughter may only be six years old, but she’s already mastered the art of manipulation. Even knowing that I still have a hard time saying no to her.
However, the nanny is non-negotiable. I may be an earl, and hold a seat on the Queen’s council, but I still have to work.
“Why can’t you stay home, Daddy?” She stares up at me with those big blue eyes, and I almost give in to her demand.
I know I’ve spoiled her, but after her mother passed away when she was a little over a year old, I’ve felt the need to make the loss up to her. Not that I could control Margaret’s passing. I only had three months with her after she was diagnosed with a rare form of lymphoma.
We’d married young, for convenience, but I did love her. And she gave me the most special gift of all-Amelia.
My daughter may have inherited my wife’s blonde hair and freckles, but the child has acquired my own stubbornness, which is the reason we’ve gone through over twenty nannies in the past five years. And after the unfortunate events that happened with the last one, I had to go through a new agency out of the US.
The woman’s qualifications are a far cry from the British nannies who’ve been in my employ, but I’ve run out of options.
“I’ve told you, darling,” I say, crouching to Amelia’s level. “If I don’t work, I can’t afford to buy you all the pretty little things you like.”
“I don’t care.” She wraps her arms around my neck and squeezes tight. “I don’t want you to go.”
I sigh, and stand, Amelia still wrapped around me like a spider monkey. “What am I going to do with you, hmm?”
She pulls back. “Take me to the lake, Daddy. We can build a sandcastle as tall as Big Ben.”
I chuckle. “That would be quite a feat.”
“Please, Daddy. We haven’t gone to the lake in so long.”
“I’ll look at my schedule and see if we can schedule a day.” Through the window, I see the car pull up to the front of the house, and my driver, Harold, get out. “I think she’s here.” I place Amelia’s feet back on the floor. “I’ll make a deal, you be on your best behavior and I’ll see about the beach day.”
She scrunches her nose at me.
“You promise?”
“I do.”
With a sigh, she nods, then takes my hand and we walk to the front door to greet the new nanny. Before we get there, Amelia exclaims. “I have to use the potty, Daddy.”
I frown. I know this game. Amelia uses the bathroom as a way to avoid situations. For a six-year-old, she’s much too smart for her own good. “Alright, but be quick. And wash your hands.”
Amelia scurries upstairs to the second-floor bathroom and I turn to pull open the front door. I have no idea what to expect, and my hopes aren’t high. I love my little girl, but the last thing I need this summer is to struggle with finding childcare. There’s enough on my plate with work and being a single father.
The agency forwarded me the woman’s resume, so I know that her name is Dina Pacheco and that she’s from Seattle, and has a diploma from a culinary school. I’m not sure how that makes her qualified for this line of work, but the woman I’d spoken to at the agency had insisted she was the best choice.
Yet when Harold opens the back door of the town car, I wonder if he didn’t pick up the wrong woman at the airport. She isn’t in a white apron and black dress, like the rest of the nannies I’ve hired, that’s for sure.
Her outfit is more colorful than the peacocks that my aunt Martha keeps at her vineyard. She’s wearing a bright, floral kimono over distressed jeans-the kind you see people wearing and wonder did they actually buy them like that on purpose? Gaping holes at the knee and thighs … showing off a fair bit of skin. It’s the color of shimmering sand and it makes me wonder if Amelia’s idea of spending the day at the beach isn’t rather perfect after all.
She wears impractical wedge heels in pink and there’s a leopard print tote bag on her shoulder that’s nearly as big as she is. She’s petite, all curves and color, and my cock, which hasn’t shown interest in anyone in a long time, instantly hardens.
Shit.
Her long, wavy dark hair has hidden her face from me, but when she brushes it back, I’m not prepared for the eyes that look back at me. They’re dark, a rich chocolate brown. But it’s not the color that gives me pause, it’s the way I swear I can see into the woman’s very soul. They’re filled with as much brightness, and life, as her outfit.
And then she smiles. She has two deep dimples in both of her cheeks, and even though it’s a typical drab day in London, the sun seems to come out.
Her gaze rests on mine for a moment, and I see that smile falter slightly.
“I’m Dina Pacheco. Are you Callum Wharton?” she asks, her voice as light and breezy as her smile.
“Uh, yes. Yes, I am. Callum is fine,” I say, trying to string together words. One look at her and I’m caught off balance. A thing that rarely, if ever, happens to me. I’m an earl, for Christ’s sake, not a schoolboy with a crush. I can certainly speak to this exotic creature.
Except apparently not. Because I’m flustered in a way I’ve never been in my life.
“So…can I come in?” She lifts her shoulders as she asks the question and I realize it’s time to get out of the way and let her inside.
“Of course, right this way,” I say as Harold brings in her luggage. “The flight was acceptable, I presume?”
She smiles, a small laugh playing on her lips. “I suppose it was acceptable.”
“Suppose?” I’m taken aback and she must notice. Her hand falls to my arm as she laughs apologetically. “I’m just teasing, Callum. You hired a private jet for me. I don’t think I’ve ever been treated so well. So thank you, I mean it.”
I can relax then, realizing I haven’t upset her and before I can say anymore, Amelia is bounding down the steps, her eyes wide.
“She looks like a flower!” my daughter exclaims with the same pleasure in her voice as she had when I took her to Disney Paris over Christmas to meet the princesses.
“You must be Amelia,” Dina says without missing a beat. She crouches to my daughter’s level and holds her hand out.
“I’m Dina.”
Amelia purses her lips, and I give her hand a small squeeze.
“Manners,” I remind her.
“My other nannies wanted me to call them by their last names.”
“I prefer you call me Dina, but if you want, you can call me Miss Pacheco.”
“That’s a funny name.”
“Amelia,” I warn.
“It’s Portuguese,” Dina says, unfazed by her rudeness. “But I’m from the United States. A city called Seattle.”
“Is that why you speak funny?” She laughs.
“I suppose I do. Maybe you can teach me how to speak proper English,” she says the last two words in a terrible British accent, and I can’t help but smile. “And I’ll teach you how to make the perfect chocolate cake.”
Amelia’s face brightens. “I love cake.”
Those dimples appear again. “I’ll tell you a secret, so do I.”
They smile at each other, and I’m a little shell shocked at how quickly this woman has charmed my daughter.
“Can I tell you another secret?” Dina says to Amelia. “I was on a plane for ten hours, and I’m really tired. Do you know it’s nighttime where I live right now?”
Amelia frowns. “But the sun is out.”
“Not in Seattle. If you have a globe, I’ll show you. And then maybe you can show me to my room.”
On her own, Amelia reaches for Dina’s hand. “Come on. And I’ll show you my room too. I’ve got hundreds of dolls. But I want one that has a shirt like yours.”
Dina chuckles as she follows my daughter inside, and I’m left there standing like a fool with my mouth open, wondering what the bloody hell just happened.
“She’s a different one,” Henry, my butler, says, placing the last of her bags on the steps, which are just as bright and colorful as her personality.
“That she is,” I say, realizing it’s not Amelia I’m worried about.
It’s myself.

About the book: Release Date June 11, 2019

Georgette Castle’s family runs the best home renovation business in town, but she picked balloons instead of blueprints and they haven’t taken her seriously since. Frankly, she’s over it. Georgie loves planning children’s birthday parties and making people laugh, just not at her own expense. She’s determined to fix herself up into a Woman of the World… whatever that means.

Phase one: new framework for her business (a website from this decade, perhaps?)

Phase two: a gut-reno on her wardrobe (fyi, leggings are pants.)

Phase three: updates to her exterior (do people still wax?)

Phase four: put herself on the market (and stop crushing on Travis Ford!)

Living her best life means facing the truth: Georgie hasn’t been on a date since, well, ever. Nobody’s asking the town clown out for a night of hot sex, that’s for sure. Maybe if people think she’s having a steamy love affair, they’ll acknowledge she’s not just the “little sister” who paints faces for a living. And who better to help demolish that image than the resident sports star and tabloid favorite?

Travis Ford was major league baseball’s hottest rookie when an injury ended his career. Now he’s flipping houses to keep busy and trying to forget his glory days. But he can’t even cross the street without someone recapping his greatest hits. Or making a joke about his… bat. And then there’s Georgie, his best friend’s sister, who is not a kid anymore. When she proposes a wild scheme—that they pretend to date, to shock her family and help him land a new job—he agrees. What’s the harm? It’s not like it’s real. But the girl Travis used to tease is now a funny, full-of-life woman and there’s nothing fake about how much he wants her

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date June 4, 2019

When a bringer of death…

Awakened after millennia, dragon warrior Reaper is ready to fulfill his destiny…until he sees Greer. With one glimpse, everything Reaper has ever known throughout his very long life is irrevocably changed. Greer’s his mate, he feels it in his blood, in his soul—but convincing her is another matter. The dragon clan healer finds him obnoxious and annoying, but he knows a woman’s interest when he smells it. And Greer smells like one word: mine.

Meets a giver of life…

Greer has spent hundreds of years using her healing abilities for the good of others, making her the polar opposite of Reaper. The ferocious war general may be an ancient, but his arrogance proves he hasn’t spent any of that time learning about women. Greer is displeased when her Alpha sends her to New Orleans with the insufferable warrior—then she sees him in action against a menace threatening to tear the city apart. Fierce, protective, magnificent…mate-worthy. Except he’s hiding something from her. Something dark and devastating that could destroy their newly forged bond. Maybe opposites do attract, but if they want to live long enough to find out, they’ll first have to save the world teetering on the brink of obliteration.

Length: NOVEL
Author note: This is the final book in the Darkness series and can be read as a stand-alone.

REVIEW: DARKNESS RISING is the ninth and final instalment in Katie Reus’ contemporary, adult DARKNESS paranormal, romance series. This is dragon shifters, ancient warrior Reaper, and healer Greer. DARKNESS RISING can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous instalments is revealed where necessary.

NOTE: Darkness Rising is the final instalment Katie Reus’ DARKNESS series but the author has plans for a spin-off.

Told from several third person perspectives including Greer and Reaper, DARKNESS RISING follows in the wake of Reaper’s rising from a millennia of sleep. Something, or someone is awakening the ancient dragons towards a prelude to war, a war that pits dragons against humans and other supernatural powers. Upon first awakening Reaper will come face to face with a female dragon shifter, a female he knows he will claim as his mate. Enter dragon shifter and healer Greer, and the woman with whom Reaper will fall in love. What ensues is the search for the power(s) responsible for destroying so many ancient dragons, and the potential fall-out as Greer is targeted in an attempt to take down our story line hero.

Reaper was known as the ‘Dragon of War’; a dragon general whose arrogance pushes our heroine’s buttons with every comment, action and need to protect. No longer requiring a clan of his own, Reaper is desperate to claim Greer. Greer is an independent dragon; a healer for her clan, but a female who is determined not to let any alpha male take control of her life or her choices. Meeting Reaper stirs something deep within our storyline heroine, something that continues to grow as their lives are threatened on more than one occasion.

The relationship between Greer and Reaper is one of immediate attraction but Reaper is temporarily dependant upon our story line heroine to show him the ways of the modern world. Having no desire for a relationship or mate, Greer continues to fend off Reaper’s advances, advances that will slowly erode the wall around our heroine’s heart. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

There is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters, many of whom we have met throughout the series including several supernatural species, their mates, and their growing families.

DARKNESS RISING is a story of family, betrayal, friendship and love. The premise is intriguing and captivating: the characters are sexy and inspiring; the romance is spirited and moving. DARKNESS RISING is another edgy instalment in Katie Reus’ DARKNESS paranormal, romance series.

Without thinking, she stalked toward him and smacked him on the nose. “I can’t believe you shot fire at me!” she snapped.

That was just bad dragon etiquette. Yet now that she’d had time to think about it, she realized he hadn’t been attacking her, because the fire had gone so wildly off course. And considering the strength she could feel rolling off this stranger, she didn’t think that was accidental. If he’d wanted to hit her, he would have. She was immune to dragon fire—as were all dragons—for as long as their bodies could withstand it anyway. But he shouldn’t have been immune to her healer’s fire. That was something she was going to worry about later.

In response, the male shifted to his human form in such a fluid, quick transformation it took her breath away. She’d only seen a few ancient dragons change forms like that.

Now the male stood in front of her, staring at her with electric, mesmerizing amber eyes. In that moment she froze, trying to decide if she should run or stay.
Then he tilted his head to the side ever so slightly and she forced her eyes to remain on his. This male was a predator, likely a warrior, that much she could sense. It wouldn’t do her any good to turn her back on him.

Finally he spoke, but in a language she didn’t understand—which made her pause.

She was part of the Petronilla clan, and one of their gifts was understanding every spoken language. It was one of those biological survival things woven into their DNA. It was simply part of who they were as a clan.

“I don’t understand you,” she said to the male.

His hair was long, the soft dark waves falling right to his broad shoulders. From what she could see, his chest was incredibly built and muscular. She wasn’t going to look any lower—that was bad manners. She couldn’t help staring into his eyes, however. He had the kind of face that would make angels cry.

And he was on her clan’s territory. Which was the real issue right now.

Though to be fair, he must have been sleeping far beneath the surface so he would have no clue he was on her Alpha’s territory. She turned slightly and pointed back to where her four-wheeler was. She often came out here with it, then stripped and shifted and took to the skies. She just hadn’t gotten around to the shifting or flying part today. She’d been enjoying basking in the sun. Now it looked as if flying was going to wait.

He reached up as if to touch her face but she gently caught his wrists and pushed them back down.

They didn’t know each other and she hadn’t given him any privileges yet.
He said something again, growling low in his throat as he leaned forward and sniffed her. Actually sniffed her.

Okay, then. This dragon must have been asleep for a long time because that was very bad manners. She just hoped he wasn’t as ancient as Mira and Prima, because while she loved the “twisted sisters,” they were like feral animals half the time. Every time Greer looked into their eyes, there was no civilization. They were simply putting on a veneer for everybody. She loved them, yes, but they were far more in touch with their dragon side than she was. Sighing, she turned and headed back to her four-wheeler, looking over her shoulder at him.

The male paused, watching her curiously, but ended up stalking after her, his bare feet quiet against the snow. He didn’t seem bothered by the cold or his nudity, which for the most part was to be expected with dragon shifters. And males in general. They seemed to have no problem showing themselves off.

He stared at the four-wheeler, frowning as she slid into the front seat. She started the engine and then patted the seat behind her.

He simply lifted an eyebrow and shook his head, murmuring something in that language she didn’t understand.

Sighing, she gave it a little gas so he could see it move. Then she patted the seat again. She needed to get him back to her Alpha’s place, and arrangements would have to be made. They’d have to find his people, and more importantly, make sure this dragon understood that they were not out to humans. Not only that, for all she knew, he knew nothing of technology—and given the way he was looking at her four-wheeler with disdain, she figured that was a good bet.

He shook his head again.

“Seriously? It’s not like this thing is going to hurt you,” she muttered. “You’re a freaking dragon.” Sighing, she turned off the engine and got off the vehicle. And when she stripped off her jacket, his eyes lit up with interest.

Of course. God save her from all males.

Callie is devastated when Lisa dies, and she’s determined to help the kids get through it. She’s concerned about how Trevor will adjust to being a full-time parent, but she’s having a tough time keeping her eyes off his ripped physique. Callie loves being a part of this makeshift family, but no way she’s falling for her best friend’s ex.

Each book in the Daring Divorcees series is STANDALONE:
* One Night with a Millionaire
* My Best Friend’s Ex

Review:

My Best Friend’s Ex is book two in the  Daring Divorcees Series by Shannyn Schroeder.

Trevor Booth has lost everything, due to his alcoholism. Ten years ago his ex -wife Lisa divorced him. Since then, he has struggled to get his life back on track, and come to terms that he will never get back what he has lost! While he is weekend dad to two teenagers, his ex-wife has been texting asking him to step up and deal with their sons disrespectful attitude. The next call he gets changes everything. Lisa has died in a car accident.  This completely changes Trevor’s world.

In coming together to pay respects to his ex-wife, he coMes face to face with his ex-wife’s best friend Callie.  When Trevor is forced to take on the full-time parent role. He admittedly acknowledges that he doesn’t have clue about raising children. Callie is reeling from the fact that she has lost her best friend. She is not going to lose Lisa’s kids also. Callie feels obligated to step up and be there for Lisa’s children.

In the process, Trevor and Callie begin to realize that they have feelings for each other. And both also feel disloyal to Lisa in the feelings that they feel. They also don’t want the kids to know anything until they are sure things will work out! But they are teenagers – they already knew!

Trevor is hard working, loyal and honest.  I enjoyed him coming into his own as a single parent. And even when he doubts that he can do it – he does!

Callie is a world traveller and is always on the move. When she loses her best friend, she makes the decision that she can’t lose the only pieces of Lisa she has left!

I enjoyed how the relationship developed and couldn’t stop reading well into the night! I needed to know what was going to happen next! Thoroughly enjoyed and highly recommend as a great summer read.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Revolution, romance and technological wonders are all in a day’s work for the decorated hero of Avalonia, Sir Arthur Pageon.

An acclaimed explorer and inventor, Sir Arthur Pageon takes his unofficial role as defender of the realm of Avalonia very seriously. A fantastical world, Avalonia is home to the Discoucian Monarchy, as well as monstrous creatures and secretive academies for the highly gifted.

Upon returning from his most recent exploits aboard on his personal flying galleon The Nostradamus, Pageon is treated to a hero’s welcome and celebratory procession through the streets of Avalonia’s capital, Evermore. Little does Pageon know he’s being followed by a mysterious group known as the Purple Guard, whose devious leader is his estranged sister, Queen Lily Pageon of Harrha Island. Fiercely intelligent, Lily specialises in dastardly technological inventions with the aim of bringing down the Discoucian Monarchy so that she may reign as its dictator. However, the heir to the throne is one Princes Josephine Oladine, whose youth and royal position masks her role in the Discoucian Secret Service.

Joining forces, Princess Josephine and Sir Arthur’s adventures will take them across the whole of Avalonia — from the fog-bound shores of Karga, to the secret underground shanty town beneath the frozen prison of Icester, south to the verdant city of Proceur and from there to the affluent Starfall Academy — in their quest to foil Lily’s revolutionary

REVIEW: Reading the back cover I was a little intrigued. A new author is always a risk, but I fired up my kindle and dived in …..

Sir Arthur Pageon is an adventurer and an explorer. He invents in his spare time, but he’s also a guardian (an unofficial one) he guards the realm from creatures that would do them harm.

But coming back from his latest adventure he’s followed by a mysterious figure (we find out later that his sister has sent spies to watch Arthur)

Josephine is heir to the throne of Avalonia, but it’s under attack from Queen Lily Pageon (yes Arthur’s sister) she wants Avalonia under her rule, and will do anything to get it. So Josephine and Arthur join forces in a bid to stop Lily. (We also find out that Josephine is a type of secret agent for the royal family, so is capable of handling herself).

They travel through Avalonia and into many other regions, searching for a way to thwart Lily. (how? You’ll have to read to find that one out)?

We meet a variety of people (including the only crew member of Arthur’s flying galleon) and we meet a few Godesses (who I’m sure will play a major role in the next book).

I’ll have to admit, the writers style is very different to what I’m use to reading. It does jump around, and everything is minutely detailed?but once you get a few chapters read, you get inside the author head. It’s very descriptive and very well written. And I’m reminded of a movie I watched a little while back “Stardust” with flying ships and double dealings.

(A Farewell To Epics / Discoucia #2)
By Nicholas Lovelock
Genre: YA, Steampunk
Release Date:May 30, 2019

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Amazon.uk / Amazon.au /

ABOUT THE BOOK:

The second part of Arthur and Jo’s strange adventures throughout the land of Discoucia, and a time when Archie the Water Goddess has made the ultimate sacrifice to rid the world of her nemesis, Cordelia Paradise, the Fire Goddess.

However, things rarely go to plan and Arthur finds himself at war with Archie’s hidden agenda rather than the insane task that he has to help Archie complete.

Hidden around Discoucia in its sixteen major cities are sixteen gems that Archie must collect before a year is up. If she wins then Cordelia will disappear to another dimension and not return until she agrees to stop causing forest fires, volcanic eruptions and droughts.

Team Archie has Arthur and Jo, who both have the understanding that by collecting these gems a natural order can be brought back and maybe Jo’s father will get well again. Team Cordelia has Alicia May, who has a talent for becoming anyone and a deep malicious streak; and Iren, who has a fanatical hatred for Archie, which Archie herself doesn’t like to talk about.

Along the way they meet old friends and old enemies, as well as Archie having to perform miracles without the use of divine power. From the murky ruins of Tanalos to the haunted corridors of Ashin Dance Academy, the frozen caverns of Icester and the verdant streets of Proceur, the adventure will take them around Discoucia and beyond, unless Cordelia and Alicia May can stop them first…

•••••••••

REVIEW: After reading the first book (Dicoucia A Victorianish Fairytale) which I throughly enjoyed, I happily dived into the second book.

Jo and Arthur have to race through sixteen cities to find sixteen gems (this will help another character to defeat her enemy) and they don’t have long to find them.

Archie (a man’s name for a woman took me a little time to get use to) needs Jo and Arthur to help defeat Cordelia (a goddess of fire) Archie is in fact the goddess of water. To banish the goddess of fire will take time and certain gems (of which Archie has neither) but Archie also has a hidden agenda (do you find out??) so instead of finding gems, Arthur is caught up in Archie’s schemes.

The race to collect the gems is continually thwarted by another couple of characters (Iren and Alicia) they serve Cordelia and will do anything in order for Jo, Arthur and Archie not to collect the gems.

The writing is the same style, but as I read the first book, I knew roughly what to expect.

So who wins ? Cordelia the fire goddess? Or Archie the Water Goddess? For that answer your going to have to read the book ?

Nicholas Lovelock lives in a small village in Oxfordshire and has already published Discoucia, the first part of the Alavonia Series which spans multiple novels set to be released in the future. He enjoys riding around the countryside as well as illustrating his own works, as can be seen in his second novel Gemenicia. These Illustrations in stark black and white provide a glimpse into the world of Alavonia and how he sees it, as well as showcasing the different locations and characters that make up the Alavonia series universe.

He is a keen musician capable of playing the electric guitar as well as the acoustic and the piano, often trying to play like his musical heroes David Gilmour, Jimmy Page and Jeff Lynne. His coin collection has transformed from a hobby to a passion and obsession as he attempts to collect one of every issued coin in Great Britain. He is over halfway in that respect collecting such treasures as a 1675 Charles the Second Crown and an extremely rare Edward the Seventh Half Crown of 1905, and has begun metal detecting in an effort to tick some boxes in the Hammered Coinage section.

His love of Steampunk literature and cinema has been with him from a young age when he first saw the film ‘Wild Wild West’, sought out the original series and discovered a world of fantasy that he has painstakingly tried to pay homage to in his novels, to bring the wild west to an English setting and to create something that has never been done before.

History has always been a major passion of his as he makes many references in his literature, from characters whose personalities resemble those of eccentric historical characters or monarchs. The ability to change history through literature was one of the things that attracted him to become an author in the first place, to create similar timelines and put a unique spin on the mundane.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date April 18, 2019

Forget anything you know about history in the last 400 years. England’s Glorious Revolution failed. A descendant of the Stewarts, King James the Fifth occupies the British throne in 2006 and the British Empire is the dominant world power. The British Empire monopoly on nuclear weapons is challenged by the theft of five atom bombs. Imperial Secret Service Chief, Sir Anthony Raja, summons Mick Doyle to recover the missing weapons, suspected to be hidden in a German run gold mine in British New Guinea. Doyle is warned at the beginning of the mission that ‘everything in New Guinea will be trying to kill him.’ It seems as if New Guinea is trying to make good on that promise.

The recovery of the nuclear weapons is the toughest mission Doyle has ever undertaken. From the start, the mission is dogged by bad-luck and an ingenious enemy, always one-step ahead. His team must survive hostile New Guinea warriors, man-eating sharks and crocodiles, venomous snakes and a Chinese military force allied to the Germans.

•••••••••

REVIEW: PAX BRITANNICA is the first instalment in Paul Dalzell’s GOLDEN ANVIL adult, slightly dystopian, fictionalized story of alternate history that follows UK’s Imperial Secret Service (ISS) agent Mick Doyle as he is tasked with recovering five missing nuclear explosives believed to be hidden, in a German run gold mine, in British New Guinea. Along with fellow ISS agents Alexandra McCall, and May Pilgrim, Mick Doyle goes under cover in an attempt to locate the bombs, and take down the people in charge.

NOTE: Due to the graphic nature of the story line content, there may be some triggers for more sensitive readers.

The year is 2006, and the British Empire is the world’s dominant power. Having lost three wars to the United Kingdom, Germany, along with China, gain a foothold in the arm’s race as they prepare to ransom their stolen ‘wares’ to the highest bidder. From the outset, our hero has been targeted by the enemy, an enemy that is determined to take down ISS agent Mick Doyle, at all costs. Not only does Mick have to defend himself against potential assassins but the wilds of British New Guinea continues to make an example of our story line hero.

PAX BRITANNICA is an intricately detailed story of what if. An action packed, fast paced look at politics, espionage, vengeance and authority. The British Empire’s ISS agency is desperate to recover the missing nuclear weapons, weapons with enough power to wipe out most countries. The political content is vast, varied and comprehensive; the numerous characters are colorful, energetic and ambitious; there is a building romance and relationship between Mick Doyle and Alexandra McCall.

As to the meaning of ‘Pax Britannica’, it translates to British Peace: a state of relative international peace between the Great Powers regarded as overseen by the UK, originally observed during the nineteenth century.

Madbul and Bill both appear at the party to collect their dues from Eddy. Cynthia’s abilities are put to the test to ensure Eddy emerges alive and unscathed from this ordeal.

•••••••••••••

REVIEW: THE FRIENDS OF EDDY RELISH co-authored by Paul Dalzell and Gerard Radley is a contemporary, adult, political suspense story focusing on former Hollywood star Eddy Relish, whose life is no longer his own. A washed up actor who found himself in the seedy underbelly of sex, drugs and alcohol addiction, Eddy will unwittingly become a pawn in the world of high stakes espionage, intelligence and international terrorism. Hoping to reinvigorate his career, Eddy unknowingly becomes the bait to take down an Islamist terrorist, a terrorist who has targeted Eddy for termination. A deal with the devil pushes Eddy into dangerous circumstances, danger of which he knew little about.

Told from several third person perspectives, THE FRIENDS OF EDDY RELISH is a slow building story line that follows several intersecting and diverging paths that culminates in Las Vegas where all of the significant people, and events that have played a part in Eddy’s journey will be pushed together in an explosive reveal. From a bible spewing loan shark, to Islamist terrorists and Chinese intelligence, Eddy’s life spirals out of control but a spiral Eddy is blissfully unaware. At times I questioned what appeared to be the unnecessary introduction of yet another character, circumstance or situation but eventually everything and everyone fell into place in orderly fashion. The premise is intriguing and fascinating; the characters are colorful, diverse and eclectic.

NOTE: Excerpt intended for mature readers 18+ due to graphic content

Joseph watched helplessly as James moved from his place against the far wall toward a boy on a chair on the opposite side of the room. A boy who had slim knives embedded in his arms and legs—a human pin cushion.
Joseph shivered as he recalled his brother’s expression a moment ago as he’d sat and stared at the knives he had sliced into the boy’s flesh. James, the sadistic voyeur of his own work. Joseph’s nervous eyes landed on his brother’s target. The boy was bound with ropes, and a washcloth was stuffed into his mouth, silencing his cries.
Luke.
Fear flooded Joseph’s body. Luke, the boy who had been intent on bullying James since the age of eight. The boy who would spit at James’s feet when they walked by. The boy who call him weird, a goth, a psychopath who rarely spoke. His taunts were endless. Joseph didn’t think the verbal bullets had ever hit their target . . . until he’d found a pad of paper hidden underneath James’s bed. A pad of paper showing in graphic detail what James wanted to do to Luke.
Tie him up.
Cut his flesh.
Exsanguinate his body.
Then drink the blood down.
“They’re just fantasy, right?” Joseph asked James when he returned from detention. Joseph held up the drawings. Page after page of pain and despair and cruelty.
James walked slowly to Joseph and ran his hand down the open page of the pad, delicately running his fingertip over the pencil image of Luke’s slit throat. “It’s a promise,” James said, with no shame in his voice. “Each page is what will happen to Luke.” James finally met his older brother’s eyes. “I’m just waiting for the perfect time.”
From that day on Joseph made sure Luke never got too close to James, for fear of what his younger brother would do. Because Joseph believed every word his brother had said.
The truth was, Joseph knew that someday, if he wasn’t stopped, James would do something so terrible he wouldn’t be able to come back from it.
And Joseph had no idea how to cure James. He didn’t know how to heal his little brother of the wretchedness that had lodged itself into his soul. He prayed for a miracle he knew would never come.
Joseph’s heart pounded as James held up another knife. His brother’s torso was bare, the scars from his frequent self-mutilation clear to see, white roads of flesh mapping the veins that ran under his skin. Veins that carried the blood James so desperately craved; nightly, once safe in their room, he would slice them open and lick the falling drops as they ran in crimson rivulets down his arms.
Joseph thrashed on the bed, fighting the binds James must have placed him in while he slept. “James, listen to me,” Joseph said as he helplessly watched his brother slowly push his blade into Luke’s shoulder. Luke’s chair almost fell as he screamed into the washcloth, the fabric absorbing his cry. But James didn’t even flinch. Joseph’s stomach clenched when the blood started to pour from Luke’s shoulder as James carefully extracted the blade.
Eleven. That’s all James was. Eleven years old, yet thought only of blood . . . worse, even . . . thought only about the consumption of blood.
