ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date August 31, 2019

Run, he whispered in my ear. While you still can.

I walked into a club called Ruin and found it—and him—when he bent me over the piano he was playing.

I did as he said, but not until after he’d decimated me in the filthiest way possible.

I loved every second.

That one, and the ones that came years later. When he sang with me against his will, although the words burned and the scar tissue left him raw.

Nash has secrets, deadly ones, and he won’t let me in. He just gives me dirty little tastes of him that make me desperate for more.

To the world, I’m on top. The lead singer of a famous rock band.

With Nash, I don’t mind getting on my knees.

But someone is watching us. And our stalker isn’t content to stay on the sidelines any longer.

The curtain is about to rise. Win, lose…or die.

Author’s note: Play Dirty is a standalone enemies to lovers rock star romance. It ends in a happily ever after.

REVIEW: PLAY DIRTY is the first instalment in Cari Quinn and Taryn Elliott’s contemporary, adult BROOKLYN DAWN erotic, rock, romance series focusing on the members of the rock band Brooklyn Dawn. This is lead singer for Brooklyn Dawn Lindsey York, and musician/writer / record producer Alexander Nash’s story line. BROOKLYN DAWN is a spin off from the authors’ numerous rock series including Lost in Oblivion, Found in Oblivion, and Hammered.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Lindsay and Nash) PLAY DIRTY is an enemies to lovers/second chances (of a sorts) romance between lead singer for Brooklyn Dawn Lindsey York, and musician/writer Alexander Nash. Three years earlier Lindsey and Nash had a hot and heavy encounter behind the scenes then Lindsey disappeared from Nash’s life. Fast forward to present day wherein Brooklyn Dawn is one of the biggest rock bands in the world, and Lindsey has been asked to sing on an upcoming holiday album, an album co-written and co-produced by Alexander Nash. Sparks fly, words are said in anger as Lindsey and Nash must come to terms with what happened, and going forward. What ensues is the rebuilding relationship between Lindsey and Nash, and the potential fall-out as a stalker sets his sights on our story line couple.

Ten years earlier Irish born Alexander Nash’s life spiralled out of control. Alcohol and drugs destroyed his career when an automobile accident nearly took his life. A successful music writer and musician, Nash got his life back under control only to discover that not all was well in his well-ordered world. Lindsey York’s meteoric rise to fame came with a price including the paparazzi and fans who wanted more from the members of Brooklyn Dawn . A series of mysterious phone calls, and threats against her life find security tightened around Lindsey and the band, security that is about to drop the ball.

The relationship between Lindsey and Nash is an enemies to lovers; a second chance, of sorts between two people whose success on the music stage took off like a shot. Alexander Nash struggled to forgive the woman who walked away without looking back; Lindsey York fell for our story line hero, a man who struggle with Lindsey’s reputation, a reputation proliferated by lies and fame. The $ex scenes are intimate, erotic and intense, without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text

There is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters including several members from the other bands and the aforementioned previous series including Ripper Records executives CEO Donovan Lewis and Lila Ronson Shawcross Crandall. We are introduced to the members of Brooklyn Dawn: drummer Cooper Dallas, ead guitarist Jamie DuCaine, bass guitarist Ozzy Taylor, keyboardist Teagan Daly and rhythm guitarist Zane Landry; Roth Defense specialist Noah Jordan; up and coming singer Angel Martin; and Nash’s childhood best friend Kyle Brady.

PLAY DIRTY is a story of secrets, betrayal, friendship and family; forgiveness and moving forward, happiness and love. The premise is engaging, energetic and edgy; the romance is steamy and seductive; the characters are colorful, dynamic and charismatic. PLAY DIRTY is a fantastic start to Quinn and Elliott’s new Brooklyn Dawn rock romance series.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date August 20, 2019

Duty should mean everything to the Fourth Commander of the Echelon angels. It did before he met her. Now, the only demon he wants to slay is the one that haunts the enchanting mortal huntress, and the temptation to hunt him in Hell, a realm that might kill him, is becoming impossible to resist.

Held captive by a dragon shifter in Hell, Emelia survived a torment that changed her in ways she hates. She wants her strength back. Her life back. To do that, she needs closure. To get that, she might have to trust not only a man again, but an immortal.

But when the price of vengeance is the soul of the angel bringing her back to life, will Emelia be willing to pay it?

••••••••••

REVIEW: AVENGED BY AN ANGEL is the sixteenth instalment in Felicity Heaton’s ETERNAL MATES paranormal/ fantasy romance series. This is Fourth Commander of the Echelon Angels aka wolf, and Archangel warrior Emelia’s story line. AVENGED BY AN ANGEL can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous instalments is revealed where necessary but for backstory and cohesion, I recommend reading the series in order as it pertains to the organization known as Archangel, a group of human hunters whose prime directive is to torture and destroy anything immortal.

Told from several third person perspectives including Wolf and Emelia AVENGED BY AN ANGEL follows Archangel hunter Emelia in the aftermath of an attack and imprisonment by a dragon shifter in Hell. Meeting the Fourth Commander of the Echelon Angels gave Emelia thoughts towards a future but the Fourth Commander was willing to risk his life to avenge the torture of the woman with whom he would fall in love. As the Fourth Commander aka Wolf continues to enter Hell at the risk of becoming the Fallen, Emelia must battle her own demons in the wake of the dragon’s threats to make her his mate. What ensues is the building relationship between Emelia and Wolf, and the potential fall-out as Wolf begins to lose his battle between good and evil.

Emelia is a member of Archangel but is completely unaware of the truth nature and extent of Archangel’s evil. Meeting Wolf finds Emelia reconsidering the direction of her life, especially as it pertains to Wolf’s need to destroy the dragon that hurt the woman he loves. As Wolf struggles to maintain his status within the Echelon of Angels, our hero will discover that truth about demons, and their relationship to his holy brethren. With each visit to Hell, Wolf’s strength begins to wane but it is his fear of Falling that threatens his love with our story line heroine.

The relationship between Wolf and Emelia is one of immediate attraction. The Fourth commander of the Angel’s Echelon battles between head and heart with his need for a woman whose life is spiralling out of control. Emelia struggles with her attraction to man who is desperate to avenge the abuse she suffered at the hands of a dragon. Wanting to take the dragon herself, Emelia begs our hero to let her take control, and destroy the dragon that destroyed her life. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

Once again, like most of the previous instalments AVENGED BY AN ANGEL is more of a narrative where most of the story is told through introspection, memories, emotions, and character’s thoughts. From dragons to elves, demons to angels, feline shifters, humans and vampires, Felicity Heaton pulls together a great team of supernatural characters as her series evolves, one love story at a time. The premise is engaging and entertaining; the romance is seductive; the characters are energetic, powerful and strong.

The alarms were still blaring ten minutes later as Emelia ran beside a group of black-clad hunters down a corridor on the second level of the building. The flashing red lights hurt her tired eyes, and her muscles protested, threatening to cramp as she pushed herself to keep moving.
“Might be a breach in the cell block,” a hunter said to his companion as they broke off, turning down a hallway to her left.
She doubted that. Any breach in the cell block would have been dealt with by now by one of the teams that had been dispatched there.
It was him.
She knew it.
She would never forget the way electricity had charged the air when he had appeared in the building the first time they had met. The strange sensation had faded now, but she hadn’t imagined it.
It was the angel.
He had come back.
She just wasn’t sure where he was.
She had checked the place where they had met, a small observation room next to one of the grim white medical cells where the scientists and doctors at Archangel often studied the non-humans the hunters captured and brought in for them. The angel hadn’t been there.
Where would he go?
She ground to a halt as she realised something.
She wanted to find him. She wanted to see him again.
Her pulse pounded for a different reason as that hit her, and she moved to the cream wall and pressed her palm to it for support as she stared at the wooden floor. Awareness rushed through her, the past few weeks rolling up on her and leaving her stunned. She had been drawing further and further away from everyone else, even her friends.
But not from him.
What was it about the angel that had her moving towards him, seeking him?
He was a stranger to her, and a dangerous man. Very dangerous. She had witnessed that for herself.
So why was she experiencing a rush of adrenaline, a quiet thrill at the thought he had returned?
Why was she happy that he was here?
Because he was an angel, so she felt he could help her by using his power to free her from the pain of her memories by healing her battered mind somehow?
Or because she had seen the darkness in him, the savage side that had startled her at the time because he was an angel, and had felt the power he commanded, strength that matched, if not surpassed, what Zephyr possessed?
Her fingers tensed against the cream wall.
Did she want the angel to heal her… or destroy the dragon?
She lifted her other hand and pressed it to her chest. Her heart thundered against her palm as she dug her fingertips in, clawing her black T-shirt into her fist.
She wasn’t sure.
A prickling sensation ran up her arms. She dropped her gaze to her left forearm, frowning as the hairs stood on end. A moment later, the familiar charge began to build, barely noticeable at first, but as she focused on it, she could feel it growing.
Was he planning to leave?
Panic propelled her feet into action, and she sprinted down the corridor only to stop at the next cross junction. She slowly turned back the way she had come. The charge was weaker here, away from the spot she had just occupied. Was she moving away from him?
She ran back the way she had come and focused as best she could on the strange feeling. Her breaths came faster as it built inside her, and she was sure she was moving closer to him now. She followed it up through the building, letting her instincts and that electrical charge guide her.
She ground to a halt in front of the fire exit that would take her to the roof.
The charge was strongest here, a rush of tingles constantly running up and down her spine, tripping over her skin beneath her black combat gear. She took a moment, trying to settle her heart and level out her breathing. Her hands shook as she smoothed them over her damp hair, using the action of drawing the dark ribbons of it into a rough knot at the back of her head to calm herself.
Emelia blew out her breath, gripped the handle, and pushed. The heavy door creaked open, and she stepped out onto the flat roof. The cool night air chilled her, brushing across her damp nape and raising the hairs on her bare arms as surely as the angel had.
Was he here?
She shuffled out onto the roof, her eyes adjusting to the dim light that rose from below her, allowing her to see through it. Objects gradually appeared, gaining form and depth as she moved deeper into the darkness, leaving the safety of the door behind. Nerves threatened to send her running back that way, a whispered taunt in her mind reminding her that she hadn’t left the building in more than a week.
That she was in danger out here in the open.
She instinctively glanced up and then shook her head. The dragon wasn’t here, and he couldn’t shift in her world. There was nothing to fear from that inky sky.
She moved around one of the air-conditioning outlets and paused.
Her breath hitched.
Heart lodged in her throat.
She clenched her fists to stop them from trembling and lingered in the shadows, away from the sphere of slender light that emanated from the pitched glass windows that formed a skylight for fifteen feet down the middle of the roof.
Slender light that washed over the man lazing on the gritty dark ground before her, his hands tucked behind his head, supporting it as he stared at the sky.
Looking nothing like she had expected.
The thick onyx hair and silver eyes had remained the same, the chiselled contours of his face and strong line of his jaw exactly as she had remembered them, but everything else was wrong.
He looked more human than angel.
No huge white wings.
No pristine white tunic suited to one of his breed.
A dark turtleneck and black slacks hugged his powerful physique, emphasising muscles that roused a wariness in her and had her wanting to take a step back from him. She knew he was strong, he didn’t need to drive the point home by showing off honed muscles that screamed he could easily overpower her.
Emelia fought the wave of panic that rose inside her.
If he wanted to hurt her, he probably would have done it by now. He was aware of her. She wasn’t an idiot. He was pretending to be oblivious to her standing in the shadows, looking at him, on the verge of a panic attack. To give her time to calm herself and adjust to his presence?
It certainly seemed like an angelic thing to do so she rolled with it as his reason for not even glancing at her.
She swallowed to wet her dry mouth and throat and risked a step towards him. “What are you doing?”
The black slashes of his eyebrows rose but he still didn’t look at her. “Trying to relax.”
Funny that. She had been trying to relax too, before the alarms had sounded. Now she was trying to relax all over again, repeatedly telling herself that he wasn’t going to hurt her.
She braved another step closer so she could see him more clearly in what little light shone on him. He did seem tense.
Lines bracketed the corners of his full mouth as he moved his right arm, lowering it to his stomach, and she didn’t miss the way he shifted that hand to his left side.
“Any reason you’ve chosen to relax on the roof of Archangel?” She canted her head to her right, peering at his face.
He didn’t answer.
She glanced over her shoulder towards the fire exit as the alarms continued to ring. It was only a matter of time before one or more of the hunters scouring the building below her for the intruder ended up checking the roof. What would he do then?
What would she do?
“The alarms are ringing because of you,” she murmured, her eyes still on the door.
It beckoned her, luring her with a promise of safety. She was safe in there, shut away from the world.
“My apologies.” His deep baritone rolled over her, chasing that desire away, together with her panic. It slowly faded as she shifted her focus to him, coming to face him. The alarms ceased, but he still didn’t look at her as he said, “Is that better?”
He had silenced them the last time they had met too. What other powers did he possess?
She nodded, relieved the world had fallen silent again. Hopefully the hunters would believe the intruder was gone or was never there to begin with, and would go back to their duties. It might buy her time to find out why there was an angel lazing on the roof, his eyes on the night sky.
Those eyes shifted like mercury in the weak moonlight, eerily bright despite the darkness.
“Are you here about Sable again?” She inched closer, narrowing the distance between them down to under ten feet.
He finally looked at her.
It was nothing more than a brief glance, a bare brush of those dazzling silver eyes over her from head to toe before they fixed back on the stars. Nerves instantly rushed through her, thoughts filling her mind that had butterflies whirling in her stomach like a damned hurricane.
Emelia edged another step closer as her memories pushed harder.
And hell, that was just as bizarre as finding him dressed like a regular guy on her rooftop.
Normally when the crush of memories happened, she wanted to get away from everyone.
Not get closer to someone.
She reminded herself that she couldn’t trust anyone now. Whatever trust she’d once had, it lay broken now, fragmented like her strength.
Fractured like her soul.
“I will not hurt you,” he murmured softly without looking at her, his voice a balm to her ragged nerves, soothing the torn edges of them. “I did not come to upset you.”
Had he sensed her mounting panic?
Immortals had acute senses, but she hadn’t expected his to be that sharp. The panic hadn’t even gripped her yet, had only been on the verge of seizing her, but he had felt it, and he had sought to reassure her.
She breathed a little easier, managed another step closer to him, and was rewarded for her courage by the memories that had been surfacing fading away instead. She tried to relax, but it was difficult. No matter how many times she told herself that he was an angel, that he wouldn’t hurt her, the tension in her body remained.
A different memory surfaced as she looked down at him, a flash of him in that observation room, his face a mask of darkness and eyes as hard as diamonds as he had growled that he would kill the dragon for her.
“I like the view of the stars from here.” His deep voice wrapped around her again, pulling her back to the present, and she had the feeling he had known she was slipping away again and had wanted to bring her back to him.
She tipped her head back and charted the faint pinpricks that struggled to pierce the lights of the city. Calm washed over her as she gazed at them, carrying away her fears and leaving her feeling lighter, freer than she had in a long time.
“The city lights drown them out, but… I like to look at the stars too now.” She lost herself in them and everything fell away, all the weight lifting from her with it.
“Why?”
She couldn’t tear her eyes away from them as she let the words slip out rather than holding them back. “They help me remember I’m not in Hell anymore.”
The briefest trace of cold washed over her exposed skin and the stars seemed to dim for a heartbeat before they returned.
“The stars are always more beautiful from your world.” His voice was tight now, held an edge that was sharp as a blade and at odds to his words.
Was he trying to control his mood? The world had darkened as it had before when his temper had snapped, but it had only lasted a split second this time. Because he didn’t want to scare her?
He sounded like she did at times when she was close to snapping, trying to be polite to stop herself from lashing out at those who were trying to smother her.
“The lights drown the stars out.” She squeezed the words past her tight throat and told herself to breathe, because she was safe here.
“I can see them,” he murmured. “I see things a little differently to you.”
She could imagine.
She tried to find her favourite constellations, wishing she could see the stars as clearly as he could. She had seen pictures of the Milky Way viewed in complete darkness, and she would love to see it with her own eyes. She wanted to immerse herself in nature, in everything that Hell lacked. Stars. Trees. The sun. She had basked in it more than once in the doorway behind her, not quite brave enough to laze on the roof as he was and bathe in it.
“Why are you here?” She lowered her eyes to him.
He looked at her at last.
“I am sorry. I could not stay away any longer.” His voice was low as he spoke, an honesty in his silver eyes that drew a frown from her.
She hadn’t seen honesty in anyone’s eyes in a long time. She had seen pity, disgust, guilt, and everything in between, but not honesty.
He was truly sorry, but she wasn’t sure why.
“Couldn’t stay away?” The answer struck her. “You mean from Sable.”
He had come for her friend again, sent here to make another attempt to take her to his realm. He was going to be sorely disappointed.
“She isn’t here. As far as I know, she’s in Hell with Thorne.”
His gaze locked with hers. “From you.”
Emelia stared into those honest eyes, saw the truth in them as they brightened, turning gold at the edges, and panicked.
She backed off a step as the fear he had chased away surged through her, memories fighting to the surface to twist her thoughts. She had to get away. She had to go. It wasn’t safe here. She swallowed her racing heart and tried to calm her mind, but fear sank icy claws into both of them, and she couldn’t breathe.
He sat up, grimacing as he clutched his left side. “I am sorry. Do not fear me. I would never hurt you, Emelia.”
She couldn’t convince herself to believe that.
Zephyr had told her he would never hurt her again, and then he had struck her so hard when she had refused his advances that he had broken one of her ribs. She lowered her hand to her right side, mirroring the angel as he struggled to his feet, pain tightening his features.
“Emelia,” he murmured, his soft voice doing nothing to calm her this time. “I need to know more about you… about that diabolical bastard who hurt you.”
She shook her head. She didn’t want to speak about such things. She just wanted to leave. She needed to leave. So why couldn’t she convince her feet to move?
Why did part of her want to stay?
“I tried to forget you,” he grated, the gold that ringed his irises beginning to invade them now as the air around him darkened. “I tried to forget what I saw… but I cannot… and I cannot focus on my duty anymore. The dragon must pay.”
All her fear and panic flooded out of her just like that, as if he had uttered magical words not a simple vow to avenge her. Calm flowed in, cold and clinical, erasing all feeling in its path, leaving her feeling empty inside.
She stared into his shifting eyes, ones that were still honest and open, hiding none of his feelings. His anger. His fury. It was all there for her to see.
“The dragon lives in Hell,” she uttered.
A place he apparently couldn’t go without experiencing great pain.
“I do not care.” He ground the words out as the air around him continued to darken and his eyes brightened further, pulling her under their spell. “I will slay this dragon for you.”
She wanted that.
She wanted Zephyr dead.
But if the angel ventured into Hell, he would be weakened, in danger of being killed by Zephyr. Sending him to hunt the dragon might be sending him to his death.
Was that a price she could bring herself to pay for a shot at revenge?

Review:

A Wilderness Within by Emma Castle is the 2nd book in her Unlikely Heroes series. This story revolves around a contagion that kills the majority of the world.  Only those immune to the disease have survived, and very few have any hope, as everyone is out for themselves.

We meet Lincoln Atwood, our hero and a Delta Force soldier, who protected the President, as well as other politicians and soldiers, in a bunker; until he was the last one left.  Lincoln travels alone in this dark dystopian world, trusting no one; until he comes across a woman who is also surviving alone.

Caroline Kelly, our heroine, was the lone survivor at the first airport where the disease was rampant, unable to leave until everyone died, as she escaped.  Caroline is desperate to travel to find her family and pray they survived.  When a bearded hunk of man approaches her, Caroline tries to escape, but gets hurt and the man (Lincoln) carries her to safety.  Caroline trusts no one, and fears for her life.

In a short time, Caroline will first become friends with Lincoln, and eventually an unlikely romance begins, with each now trusting each other and helping to find survivors who want to join and help find a cure. Lincoln recognizes that Caroline makes him believe there is hope out there, and together they will move forward in this bleak dark journey.

What follows is an intriguing and very well written storyline that was not only exciting, but also a story of tragedy and survival.  Lincoln and Caroline were fantastic characters, and despite the circumstances, they managed to find a way to fall in love and give each other the inspiration that there is a future for them together.  In a short time, we became invested in Lincoln and Caroline, their strength and determination and I loved them together.   Along the way they will come across survivors both good and bad, but it will be Caroline’s persistence in using media to convince other survivors to come together and find the cure.

A Wilderness Within was an emotional and gripping journey in a world destroyed by a horrific pandemic.  It is a story of survival, and the fears of family, loss, destruction and the ability to believe in hope for the future. It is also a story of love that will survive.  I do not want to give spoilers, as you really need to read this fantastic story. Emma Castle has written a wonderful, intense and emotional story that is not only believable, but inspirational, with a nice HEA.

What a Scot Wants by Amalie Howard & Angie Morgan – a Review

What a Scot Wants by Amalie Howard & Angie Morgan – a Review

Amazon / B&N / Kobo / BAM / Book Depository / Google Play / Apple

Description:
Highlander Ronan Maclaren must marry, but he’s in no particular hurry. He’s perfectly happy as the laird of his clan, running the Maclaren Whisky Distillery, and besides, he just hasn’t found the right woman.

Lady Imogen Kinley has cleverly avoided wedlock for years. Men, she has learned from painful experience, are not to be trusted. Determined to remain independent, she takes an indecent amount of pleasure in making herself as unattractive to potential suitors as possible.

When desperate measures are taken by their parents and a betrothal contract is signed, it’s loathing at first sight. They each vow to make the other cry off—by any means necessary. But what starts out as a battle of wits…quickly dissolves into a battle of wills.

Review:

What a Scot Wants begins with Ronan Maclaren discovering that his parents had entered into a betrothal contract for him a while back.  He knows he has to marry, but having had his heart broken years before, that’s the last thing on his mind.  He is perfectly happy with his life…for now.

Imogen Kinley, too, has avoided marriage for years and is also happy with the life she leads.  She is a champion for women who find themselves tossed aside (both by others and society) and in need of help.  She vows to never have a man dictate to her what she can and cannot do, which leaves her astounded when she learns that her family had also entered into a betrothal contract, for which she is adamant will never happen.

When Ronan and Imogen discover what they will lose if either breaks the betrothal contract, each devises their own plan to try and force the other to break it.   However, when secrets are revealed and they find themselves truly attracted to each other, Ronan and Imogen try to do everything in their power to keep the other safe as danger comes knocking.

What a Scot Wants is a nicely written story.  Imogen is stubborn and self-sufficient, as is Ronan.  They will both leave you laughing with their schemes trying to run the other off with their wild outfits and other antics.  When you discover why Imogen is such a staunch supporter of the women discarded by society, your heart breaks for her.  Ronan has a bit of a back story as well, but nothing as traumatic as Imogen.  The magic happens when they finally admit their building feelings for each other and lines are drawn in the sand to keep the other safe.  Their chemistry is palpable, but it’s their loyalty to each other draws you in.  If I had one negative thing to say, it would be that their antics drug on for a bit too long.  With that said, What a Scot Wants is ultimately a story of redemption that will keep you turning the pages until the very end.  If you like your historical romances with a little humor, a little intrigue and a lot of chemistry, you’ll not go wrong with this one.  Well done, Amalie Howard and Angie Morgan!

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date August 27, 2019

Falling in love is easy…

New Hope, South Carolina is my home. It’s where I grew up, got into trouble, and fell in love for the first time. Scarlett Kincaid was more than the girl next door, she was my best friend, until she decided that small town life wasn’t for her. One minute she was here, and the next she was gone.

The girl I used to fish with down at the creek is now the biggest name in country music. She headlines world tours, has won four Grammy’s, and I haven’t seen her since. Until today when she sped through town in her fancy car. One look at her big brown eyes was all it took to stir up a whole slew of emotions. Emotions I’d long ago buried and sure as hell don’t have time for.

It’s the aftermath that’s hard…

There are two things in my life that matter. My music, and my dad. Twelve years ago, I packed a bag and chased my dream. Leaving New Hope and escaping the gossip mill was the easiest decision I ever made. I never planned to return, but my father needs me, and he always comes first. So, I did what I had to do. I cut my tour short and came home, despite having a sister who hates me, and a community that doesn’t trust me. And then there’s Tucker Andrews.

When he propped an arm on the roof of my car, pulled down his sunglasses and flashed his police badge, I nearly swallowed my tongue. Gone is the lanky boy who used to throw rocks at me and pull my pigtails. Tucker is now a six-foot package of brawny, sexy man wrapped in more muscle than I have hit singles. Did I mention he’s a cop and a single dad?

My goal was to help Dad, and get back to my life. But what am I supposed to when the life that used to strangle me suddenly fits like a glove, and makes me dream of things I never thought I’d have? What happens when the boy I walked away from years ago becomes one of the most important people in my life? I don’t have room in my life for a man much less love.

Right?

Because it’s impossible to hold onto someone who’s already gone.

New Hope, South Carolina.
Population 6,129.
I know every soul represented in that number. Not a single one of them drives the shiny red Mercedes that just went speeding by.
Seventy-five in a forty-five.
I flick on my lights and press on the gas, sending my cruiser flying past the city limit sign and the godawful billboard that sits directly behind it; the one declaring New Hope home to country music superstar, Scarlett Kincaid.
It wouldn’t be a big deal if this were actually her home. It’s not. Scarlett may have been born here, but her fancy boots haven’t landed on this soil in over a decade.
All it took was one call from a hotshot music executive to send her packing before the ink was dry on her high school diploma. Scarlett flew from this town fast enough to leave our heads spinning. Before any of us could process what had happened, little Scarlett Kincaid—the same girl who used to build forts with me in my living room while my mama made us mac ‘n’ cheese—had a hit single sitting at number one on the Billboard charts.
She went from homecoming queen and most likely to marry a rich spouse in our senior yearbook, to the queen of country music.
The country loves her. Hell, the whole world loves her.
New Hope…not so much. And it’s high time that fucking sign comes down.
But first, I have to deal with this speed demon in the sexy red car.
I sound the sirens, and the car pulls to the side of the road and waits while I walk to the driver’s side window. It’s still up, the heavy tint preventing me from seeing inside. With a hand on my holster—because you never know what you’re going to walk up on—I knock on the window.
The dark glass lowers.
My first thought: this woman is absolutely gorgeous. Long, dark hair. Pouty lips. And a tiny pink dress. Her eyes are covered by oversized aviators, but I’m sure they’re as pretty as the rest of her.
My second thought: what crazy excuse is she going to come up with to try and get out of this ticket? It never ceases to amaze me the things women are willing to do to keep from getting into trouble. I’ve been offered everything from a blowjob to a pay-off to marriage.
“Do you know why I pulled you over today, ma’am?”
“Tucker?” The woman smiles, then pushes her sunglasses to the top of her head. And that’s when I see the brown eyes I’ve spent more than a decade trying to forget. “Tucker Andrews, is that you?”
I step back and square my shoulders. “You can call me Officer Andrews. Do you know why I pulled you over today, ma’am?”
“Tucker.” The woman laughs and shakes her head. “It’s me, Scarlett.”
At the mention of her name, I’m met with an onslaught of flashbacks. Running hand and hand through the neighborhood with her, laughing and playing, only to have her ignore me the second we got to school. The popular crowd versus the nerds who desperately tried to fit in. She the former, me the latter, and the pain it caused every time she acted as though she didn’t know my name. For years, I pretended it didn’t bother me because I knew that when I got home, Scarlett would meet me at the fence, and the awkwardness from the day would dissipate as though it never happened.
But it did. Day after day after day. I was a glutton for punishment. There was nothing in the world I loved more than Scarlett Kincaid, and it didn’t matter how badly she hurt me, I was always willing to forgive her.
Her smile and laugh might’ve gotten to me in middle school and high school, but I refuse to let it affect me now.
“I know who you are.”
Her smile falters.

REVIEW: BEWARE THE DARKNESS is the fourteenth instalment in Alexandra Ivy’s contemporary, adult GUARDIANS OF ETERNITY paranormal, fantasy romance series. This is vampire Tarak, and mermaid princess Waverly’s story line. BEWARE THE DARKNESS can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary.

NOTE: BEWARE THE DARKNESS pick up immediately after the events of DARKNESS RETURNS.

Told from several third person perspectives including Tarak, Waverly and Levet, BEWARE THE DARKNESS follows the search for vampire Tarak. Five hundred years earlier Tarak was betrayed by the former Anasso (king of the vampires) and found himself imprisoned and used as a blood slave by the new king of the mer-people. Throughout the years Tarak would hallucinate believing a beautiful angel came for to visit, an angel who would feed our story line hero. Enter Waverly, mermaid princess, and the woman with whom Tarak would fall in love. Desperate to take down the man who destroyed his life, Tarak goes in search only to be stopped by our story line heroine. What ensues is the building relationship between Tarak and Waverly, and the potential fall-out as Tarak is determined to kill the man that betrayed them all.

Meanwhile Waverly struggles with Tarak’s need to kill the king of the mer-people, a man who is currently holding her sister hostage, a woman who protects and guards the infants with her life. With no idea where Sabrina is hidden, Waverly fears to kill the king will also kill the sister she loves.

The relationship between Tarak and Waverly has been building for several hundred years when Waverly was forced to feed Tarak, an in effort to keep him strong enough to feed the mer-people king. Tarak, believing Waverly was nothing more than a illusion, is fearful that Waverly is nothing more than a trick to recapture our story line hero. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate, without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

There is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters including the mer-people King Riven, and his guard Rimm; Rivet and ogress Inga; Waverly’s sister Sabrina, as well as a number of mer-people, demons, Puck the imp, and the current king of the vampires Styx and his mate Lilah, and vampire Chiron.

BEWARE THE DARKNESS is a story of betrayal, vengeance, power and control; a story of family, love and friendship. The premise is intriguing and engaging; the romance is seductive; the characters are colorful and charismatic.

REVIEW: Have to admit it, I’m not a fan of “How to” titles unless their instruction books. However, that said, don’t let the title fool you. This book is a rollercoaster of action, romance, wit, and enchanting characters. It starts with a band and just keeps coming!

I won’t spoil the plot or storyline for you but let me tell you I was up until 5:00 am reading because it was just that good!

This is the marvelous adventure of Lady Alexandra, daughter to the Earl of Bentham and Piers Gedrick Atherton, Duke of Redmayne.

The set up of this book is as entangled as the plot and storyline itself. It begins with rape and murder and continues to build action throughout the book! How you say? Well, this is a must read it yourself to be enjoyed. Let me at least tell you the story is very well written and told with such patience. The main characters are good but have flaws. The villains are so very well described and completely evil. The secondary characters are endearing and enchanting. The whole cast of this book are entertaining and keep the action lively.

Is there romance? OH YEAH! It’s slow at first but builds with the story and becomes the hottest stuff I’ve read in a good while.

The only spoiler I will give you is that the book begins with the heroine getting raped at the hands of the schoolmaster. If you have issues with reading that, this might not be for you. I thought author Kerrigan Byrne handled it very sensitively and the subsequent way her life formed, much like I’d expect. I thought it was very well written and handled. Poignant and brave.

If books were like stocks, this one would be blue chip! Do yourself a great favor and grab a copy but be warned, you may lose sleep by not being able to put it down. I certainly couldn’t.

Reviewed by Georgianna S

Q: What inspired you to write How to Love a Duke in Ten Days?

A:  I’ve always been one of those women who have enjoyed fierce female friendships. I think that soulmates, even for heterosexual women, can be just as necessary with other women as with men, and a real hero must not just love and respect you, but also your tribe. I wanted to write a series where historical heroines could truly have it all, education, dreams, businesses, wealth, genius, revenge, hot sex, AND true love. Where the sacrifices were made on their behalf instead by them, and where their heroes learn to lift them up in all ways, heal their pains, calm their fears, become their best friends, and protect them with what I hope is a great balance between alpha hotness and progressive sensitivity.

Q: Is there one thing you would like readers to take away from this story?

A: That’s tough because I packed a lot in there! I would say the one thing from this book, specifically, is that happiness is attainable against the odds, even when overcoming the worst that people can do to one another. Even though I’m a grown up and a cynic, I still like to write books that remind me that true love conquers all, because that love can come from so many people.

Q: Can you describe your typical day writing this book?

A: This book was especially difficult for me to write, so I spent a great deal of time in my bathrobe. I would get up, my fantastic husband would make me coffee, I’d call my critique partner and we’d do a bit of brainstorming, and I’d write and rewrite for hours, stress, cry, throw things, walk the dog, eat, snack, eat some more, facebook way too much, and then finish under word count, binge a tv show or a book until I stared at the ceiling into the wee hours. Oh, and there was drinking in there at regular intervals.

Glamorous, I know!

Q: Describe the hero and heroine of How to Love a Duke in Ten Days in three words each.

A: The Duke of Redmayne:          Wary. Wounded. Wicked.

Lady Alexandra Lane:             Brave. Brilliant. Beautiful.

Q: What is the one thing that the heroine, Alexandra, can’t live without?

A: She cannot live without her two dearest friends in the entire world, Miss Cecelia Teague, and Lady Francesca Cavendish. They literally buried a body for her, and would defend her to the death.

Q: What was your hardest scene to write in How to Love a Duke in Ten Days? Your favorite?

A: As with many (most) of my novels, the prologues are the hardest to write, and read, I suspect. Usually I take the characters to the very edge of their breaking point, often times pushing them over so they have what seems like insurmountable conflicts to overcome both internally and externally. So, for this book, Alexandra’s assault was the most difficult thing to get through, and boy did I enjoy being able to help Piers put her back together, because he was just the perfect hero for her. Tender, empathetic, a good sense of humor, and a large dose of protective alphaness.

Q: Why do you write historical romance?

A:  I’ve always romanticized the past. I can’t help it. I love the pace and the aesthetic, the gowns and the suits and the manners and the manors. I love to do historical research and it’s so fun to see how much we are influenced by the past and how, even though so much has changed through the centuries, people really haven’t. Also, it’s fun to play with language, mystery, and sex in a time when a scandal was still possible. *wink.

Q: Is there another particular author that inspires you or that you enjoy reading?

A: There is a LIST! I would say in historical romance, though, it’s always always Lisa Kleypas. She has a grasp on the characterization of historical folks that I can never hope to attain. I’m just in awe of her every word.

Q: Where do you go or what resources do you use to make sure your novels are historically correct?

A: I love to find books about a time period at B&N or my local bookshops. I go to Harper’s Bazaar for fashion, and a slew of Victorian references for the time period. I do read blogs and sometimes consult with historians and experts.

Q: Did you learn anything surprising while researching for this novel?

A: Many things! I learned how truly difficult it was to attain an education as a woman as little as a hundred years ago. It’s really incredible how far we’ve come in a century.

Q: What do you do when faced with writer’s block, if you ever are?

A: Oh man. I often am. I usually try to shake it loose with a brainstorming conversation with a few friends I have who always seem to be able to unstick me. I rely heavily on the creativity of others as well as my own.

Q: How did you feel the first time you realized one of your books was a big success?

A: I didn’t believe it. It seems surreal every time I truly realize that a story I wrote entertained another human. Let alone more than one. I’m like… they paid to read it? WHAT?

Q: What’s next for the Devil You Know series?

A: I’m especially excited for the next book ALL SCOT AND BOTHERED because it’s about Alexandra’s best friend the curvy vicar’s daughter, Cecelia Teague. She inherits London’s most infamous and successful brothel, and one imposing, surly Scottish enemy along with it. She and Lord Ramsay, the Lord Chief Justice with an axe to grind against her establishment, can’t be in a room together without the sparks flying. I can’t think about this book without smiling.

Q: Is there anything else you’d like to add?

A: I hope you enjoy this trio of roguish redheads as much as I enjoyed writing them!

Chapter One

Maynemouth, Devonshire, 1890 Ten years later

Alexander,
Accept the invitation to Castle Redmayne. I’m in danger. I need you.

—Frank

Alexandra Lane had spent the entire train ride from Lon- don to Devonshire meticulously pondering those fourteen words for two separate reasons.
The first, she had been unable to stop fretting for Fran- cesca, who tended to give more than the appropriate amount of context. The terse, vague note Alexandra now held was more of a warning than the message contained therein.
The second, she could no longer afford a first-class, pri- vate railcar, and had, for the last several tense hours, been forced to share her vestibule face-to-face with a rough- featured, stocky man with shoulders made for labor.
Alone.

26 kerrigan byrne
He’d attempted polite conversation at first, which she’d rebuffed with equal civility by feigning interest in her cor- respondence. By now, however, they were both painfully aware she needn’t take four stops to read two letters.
It was terribly rude, she knew. Her carpetbag remained clutched in her fist the entire time, except when her hand would wander into its depths to palm the tiny pistol she always carried. The sounds of the other passengers in ad- joining vestibules didn’t make her feel safer, per se.
But she knew they would hear her scream, and that pro- vided some relief.
For a woman who’d spent a great deal of the last ten years in the company of men, she’d thought these painful moments would have relented by now.
Alas, she’d become a mistress of manipulating a situa- tion so, even if she had to endure the company of men without a female companion, there would be more than one man. In the circles she tended to frequent, people be- haved when in company.
It had worked thus far.
Alexandra braced herself against the slowing of the train, breathing a silent prayer of relief that they’d finally arrived. She’d been terrified that if she’d glanced up once, she’d be forced into conversation with her unwanted com- panion.
Rain wept against the coach window, and the shadows of the tears painted macabre little serpents on the conflict- ing documents in her hands. One, a wedding invitation. The other, Francesca’s alarming note.
A month past, she’d have wagered her entire inheritance against Francesca Cavendish’s being the first of the Red Rogues to capitulate to the bonds of matrimony.
A month past, she’d assumed she’d had an inheritance to wager.

HOW TO LOVE A DUKE IN TEN DAYS 27
Their little society had seemed destined to live up to the promise they’d once made as young, disenchanted girls to never marry.
Until the invitation to an engagement masquerade— given by the Duke of Redmayne—had arrived the same day of her friend’s cryptic and startling note.
The invitation had been equally as ambiguous, stating that the future duchess of Redmayne would be unveiled, as it were, at the ball. Included in Alexandra’s particular envelope was a request for her to attend as a bridesmaid.
The subsequent plea for help from Francesca—Frank— had arrived in a tiny envelope with the Red Rogue seal they’d commissioned some years prior.
Alexandra hadn’t even known Francesca had returned from her romps about the Continent. Last she’d heard, the countess had been in Morocco, doing reconnaissance of some sort. Nothing in her letters had mentioned a suitor. Not a serious one, in any case. Certainly not a duke.
Francesca had a talent for mischief and a tendency to interpret danger as mere adventure.
So, what could possibly frighten her fearless friend?
Marriage, obviously, Alexandra thought with a smirk.
A risky venture, to be sure.

The Truth About Cowboys (Texas Heat #1) by Lisa Renee Jones-Review & Excerpt Tour

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / B&N / KOBO / Chapters Indigo / Google Play

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date August 27, 2019

I had my life figured out.

Engaged to a successful man.

About to make partner at my firm.

Bought a high-rise apartment in downtown Dallas.

And then, poof, it’s all gone. Now, like in some cheesy romantic comedy, my car has broken down in the pouring rain on my way to “find myself” in The Middle of Nowhere, Texas. Cue hot guy coming to my rescue and changing my tire. This is the part where we flirt and have a meet-cute, right? That’s how it works in romance novels, and I should know—after all, I’m coming to Texas to write my own cowboy romance. But nope. This sexy cowboy lights into me about not being prepared for the country roads and how inappropriate my high-heeled boots are.

Little did I know, Jason Jenks would tilt my world into a new dimension with his sinful smirk and his bad attitude. Every time I turn around, he’s there to reluctantly save the day. And every time, I think there may be something to that spark we ignite. But there’s a reason the majority of country songs are about broken hearts. The closer I get to this man, the closer I get to learning the truth about cowboys.

••••••••••

REVIEW: THE TRUTH ABOUT COWBOYS is the first instalment in Lisa Renee Jones’ contemporary, adult TEXAS HEAT erotic, cowboy romance series. This is former major league baseball pitcher and rancher Jason Jenks, and Dallas divorce attorney/writer Jessica’s story line.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Jason and Jessica) THE TRUTH ABOUT COWBOYS follows the acrimonious relationship between former major league baseball pitcher and rancher Jason Jenks, and Dallas divorce attorney/writer Jessica. With the discovery that her boyfriend was screwing around, and her outburst and accusations towards a client, Jessica finds herself in Sweetwater, Texas, licking her wounds as she writes ‘A Girl’s Guide to Divorce’. On a forced leave of absence Jessica intends to forget about the past but driving in the rain lands Jessica knee deep in mud facing off with the ‘a$$hole’ cowboy who will steal her heart. Enter former major league baseball pitcher turned rancher Jason Jenks. What ensues is the building but antagonistic relationship between Jason and Jessica, and the potential fall-out as Jessica is forced to walk away following one too many accusations by the man that she loves.

Jessica needs some time alone, and Sweetwater, Texas offers the solitude she needs to write her novel but Jessica had no idea that she was about to meet her future in the guise of an angry and embittered former baseball player who struggles to move on from the past. Jason Jenks doesn’t do relationships having been burned in the past, a past that continues to control his present. Battling too many demons and the inability to trust, Jason struggles with issues of jealousy, and uncertainty as it pertains to the woman with whom he is falling in love.

The relationship between Jessica and Jason is oft-times combative and hesitant. Jason’s issues of trust control his emotions and our hero tends to direct his frustrations on the woman he loves. Jessica, fresh off of a disastrous romance finds herself on the defence more times than she wants, a defence that forces Jessica to walk away before losing her heart. The $ex scenes are intimate, erotic and intense, without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

We are introduced to Jason’s all seeing and feisty grandmother Martha; several ranch hands, Jason’s best friend and local veterinarian Roarke, as well as Jessica’s friend Shelly. I am looking forward to Roarke’s story.

THE TRUTH ABOUT COWBOYS is a story of family, friendship, betrayal and love; a story of trust, miscommunication, misunderstanding and hope. The premise is engaging and captivating; the romance is seductive and hot; the characters are broken, colorful, dynamic, charismatic and energetic. THE TRUTH ABOUT COWBOYS is a spirited and intoxicating introduction to Lisa Renee Jones’ new TEXAS HEAT series.

Jessica…
I dart toward the door in the far right corner and enter the bathroom, where I find a giant old-fashioned, barrel-style tub. I open one of the white cabinet doors and also find a towel, but I’m just too wet for it to help. Like that woman was for Craig. Oh God. There I go again. No. No. No. I will not think those thoughts. No more. I’m done. With him. With her. I strip down naked, wrap the towel around me, and hunt for my suitcase, which I hope like heck has the other bag of chocolate I packed.
Naked might get a girl in trouble, but I’m alone and it’s not like anyone is going to see me naked anytime soon. I can go right ahead and happily pack a few pounds of chocolate weight on a petite frame that can’t handle a few extra anything. There will be no more men for me. Therefore, there will be no trouble to be found. It’s a great plan and on this one, really truly, I dare to say, what could go wrong? I exit the bathroom into the bedroom and scream at the sight of a man standing there.
The cowboy who saved me on the side of the road is not only here, minus his trench coat and wearing a snug black T-shirt, he’s bigger and broader than I remember. The bedroom shrinks. My heart races.
“I was right,” I accuse, clutching at my towel, the only thing between me and him besides footsteps. “You are a serial killer.” I search for a weapon and I don’t know why there’s a giant flashlight on the nightstand, but it’s long and strong, and I grab it, my new prize. I also manage to drop my towel. Oh my God, I’ve dropped my towel. Goose bumps lift on my naked body and, Lord help me, my nipples pucker.
I try to grab my towel and almost drop the flashlight, which is a better weapon than terry cloth. I commit to the flashlight and my state of undress. “I will hit you if you come near me,” I warn. “I mean, kill you.” That sounds unrealistic and therefore lacks the bite I intend. “I will hurt you.”
He arches a brow and, to my shock and his credit, he doesn’t so much as blink at anything below my neck. I don’t know if I should be appreciative or offended. Am I not distracting? Am I not worthy of a look? Obviously, my ex didn’t think so and—
The cowboy starts walking toward me.
“What are you doing? Stay back.” I hold up the flashlight, but I’m the one backing up, hitting the wall with a hard thud. He snatches up my towel and hands it to me, his hand brushing my nipple in the process. I suck in a breath, even as the flashlight is removed from my hand and tossed on the bed. “The game is over. Getting naked won’t stop me from calling the police.”
“I’ll knee you. I’ll scream. I’ll—”
“You’re standing in my property, sweetheart.”
“This is not—”
“And yet it is. You picked the wrong house to squat in and the wrong town. I saw where you turned off. I knew where you were headed. Wrong choice, sweetheart.”
“Stop calling me sweetheart. And what the hell are you talking about? Squatter? What is a—” A bad feeling hits me. “You think I’m freeloading by sneaking in here and now I’m trying to buy a bed with my naked body? Really?”
“If the shoe fits, sweetheart.”
I scowl. “Stop calling me sweetheart. Since when do women seducing men try to hit them with a flashlight? Then again, we are talking about you here. I’m pretty sure you could make anyone want to hit you. Maybe that’s the only foreplay you know. A flashlight and a—”
“Stop,” he orders, his hands pressing to the wall on either side of me, and now his big body framing my naked body.
