ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date September 30, 2019

Dr. Elijah Hawkins needs … something.

After his wife jumps headfirst into a midlife crisis, he’s left with his young son, Roman, and a lot of unanswered questions.

That something turns out to be a someone—Dorothy Mayhem, nursing student, patient transporter, reckless driver, and emu owner.

Dorothy studies humans, the neurotypical kind, through books and television. Then she emulates their behavioral patterns to fit in with her peers.

But nothing can prepare her for Dr. Elijah Hawkins.

Single dad.
Brilliant pediatric oncologist.
And the sexiest doctor at the hospital.

When his failed attempts at asking her out turn into a string of playdates with his son, Dorothy finds herself unexpectedly enamored with the boy and his father.

And that’s a problem, a huge one, because Elijah’s ex-wife is a famous plastic surgeon—and Dorothy’s idol.

REVIEW:PERFECTLY ADEQUATE is a stand alone, contemporary, adult, romance story line focusing on thirty year old, nursing student Dorothy Mayhem and thirty-eight year old oncologist Dr. Elijah Hawkins.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Elijah and Dorothy) PERFECTLY ADEQUATE follows the building friendship, relationship and romance between thirty year old, nursing student Dorothy Mayhem and thirty-eight year old, divorced, single father and oncologist Dr. Elijah Hawkins. Dorothy Mayhem has Asperger’s, and struggles with everyday, ordinary social cues and actions. Aware of her issues, and battles with the ‘norm’ Dorothy finds herself on the receiving end of one man’s seduction, a seduction Dorothy is unable to comprehend or return. Enter oncologist Dr. Elijah Hawkins, and the man who will fall in love with our story line heroine. What ensues is the building relationship between Dorothy and Elijah, and the potential fall-out as Dorothy’s focus on family and love finds Elijah on the outside, looking at a future without the woman he loves.

PERFECTLY ADEQUATE is an emotional and heart breaking story; a romantic comedy with a woman whose reality is focused on the here and now; whose day to day interactions and life follow a methodical line. Dr. Elijah Hawkins has fallen for the quirky, nursing student but not everyone in Eli’s life is willing to concede his choice for a mate.

Jewel E Ann pulls the reader into a thought provoking story with a feisty and spirited heroine who is willing to step out of her comfort zone but a comfort zone with barriers preventing from stepping too far. The premise is engaging, sensitive and startling; the situations often awkward and humorous; the characters are inspiring and heart warming; the romance is passionate but struggles with Dorothy’s preconceived notions of romance, seduction, family and love.

“You can call me Eli.”
She swallows hard. “I don’t actually think I can.”
“Why not?” I force my gaze away from her mouth.
The second our eyes meet, she averts her attention to her feet. “Because you’re half of the Hathaway-Hawkins duo.”
This is a new one to me. “I’m divorced.”
“I know. I …” She makes an attempt to look at me, but her attention shifts to my temple then maybe my ear. “I mean you’re a brilliant doctor, and Dr. Hathaway is too—so brilliant. God, she’s just phenomenal. Like there are no words. But still … you change the lives of young children. You save them. You’re what every young person entering the medical field can only dream of becoming. You’ve earned the title. I can’t call you by your name. It’s too personal. I don’t know … almost intimate.”
She has Julie on a really high pedestal. Me? Down a few pegs. Sounds about right for my life at the moment. It’s not that Julie doesn’t deserve to be on the pedestal. No matter how much I hate her, I still love her. And her skills as a pediatric plastic surgeon are unmatched. She deserves Dorothy’s admiration.
But I don’t want to talk about medicine, accolades, and saving lives. I know … I know … how terrible of me. Sorry, but I need something for myself. Something personal and maybe a little selfish.
Definitely intimate.
“I don’t need a babysitter for Roman.”
She jerks her head back, giving me her full attention, eyes squinted, gaze locked to mine. “What?”
I trap my top lip between my teeth, drowning in coconuts as my heart races, sending ample blood to all regions of my body. God … I just want—need—to kiss her.
“Oh jeez …” She shakes her head, closing her eyes for a breath. “You invited me to dinner to … flirt.” Her eyes open to their widest point.
A tiny laugh escapes me. I can’t help it. Everything about this woman feels like a rebirth. “I invited you to dinner because Roman really likes you. And I just can’t thank you enough for all that you’ve done for him. You’re so generous.”
Gah! I suck at this!
What is my problem? Yes. The answer is yes! Yes, Dorothy, I invited you over to flirt, maybe even kiss. And other things …
“Oh.” She takes a step backward, stumbling a bit as the front door catches her, and more embarrassment tints her cheeks. “Well, now I feel stupid. Yes, of course you invited me here because Roman likes me. Duh. Now I just look like an idiot for assuming you wanted to flirt with me. And really, no need to thank me. My generosity is selfish. It makes me feel good to do nice things. That’s all. And really, you’ve bought me coffee and made me dinner again. It’s like I should be thanking you again. But that’s probably weird. So … I’ll just go now.”
Really, really weird shit goes through my mind as she fidgets. Dr. Hawkins is nowhere to be found. Neither is Roman’s dad. Raging-puberty-hormones Eli Hawkins invades my head—both of them really. And I just want to kiss Dorothy. That’s the PG version of my thoughts. Most of them are R-rated. Worse than the R-rating. All I can think about are the ways Dorothy and I can be generous with each other, leading to never-ending thank-you’s that don’t involve stationary, replacement scrubs, superhero capes, pasta dinners, lunch boxes … or clothing.
“Should we call it even? No more thank-you’s,” I suggest.
“Okay.” She lifts her gaze, eyes going a little cross-eyed like her focus is centered on the bridge of my nose.
“Okay.” I release a slow breath, but it does very little to relax all of my body. “Can I ask your age?” I’m not sure why I’ve been so chicken about asking her age. I think it worries me that she’s too young, and I’ll feel like a dirty old man having really inappropriate thoughts about her.
“I’m thirty. Why?”
“You just look young.”
“I wear massive amounts of sunscreen.”
I nod slowly.
Just kiss her, you big chicken!
What if she doesn’t want to be kissed by me? Or flirt with me? I internally laugh at the memory of her comment and at myself for being just as awkward. Why does something so simple have to be so complicated?
“I have a forty-five-minute drive home.”
And school the next day. Where is my head?
Oh, that’s right …
“Of course. I’m sorry. I lost track of time.”
“Okay.” She smiles.
I love her okay’s. They feel like more than the average okay.
“I’ll walk you out.”
“Have you not closed all of your rings?” She holds up her wrist, signaling to her watch.
I chuckle. “All rings were closed hours ago.”
“We could track each other. Share our rings. Did you know that?”
Rings. Kisses. Trips to the on-call room for sex.
For the love of God … get your shit together, Elijah!
“Never mind. That’s weird.” She shakes her head, rolling her eyes at herself just before opening the door and scurrying ten steps ahead of me. Her pace gains momentum with the hill of my driveway.
My long strides catch up to her at the bottom of it. She looks both ways and bolts across the street to her car, clicks the locks, and opens her door.
“Goodnight!”
“Dorothy Mayhem … you’re killing me.”
She turns just before ducking into the driver’s seat.
“What do you mean?”
Resting my hands on my hips, I drop my chin in defeat and stare at my untied gray canvas shoes. “What if I did ask you to dinner tonight to … flirt?” I glance up, digging my teeth into my bottom lip on a slight cringe.
Her body remains stoic as her eyes shift from side to side, like she’s been caught on a hidden camera. “Well … then I wore the wrong outfit.” She refuses to look me in the eye.
“I think you look amazing.”
“Yes. But this is a playdate outfit. Maybe even one I’d wear to apply for a babysitter position. It’s fun, but wholesome. Practical and safe.”
I just want to spend one day in her head. Everything about her fascinates the hell out of me. The curiosity gives me such a high.
“Tell me about your flirting outfit.”
“Well …” She clears her throat, keeping her focus on the big hill leading out of my development. And of course … her cheeks are perfectly flushed as she talks to the wind. “Since Romeo was involved, I would have chosen my red dress with white stripes. It hits just below my knees, but it’s strapless. And I would have worn my blue cardigan with it and matching blue wedge sandals with straps that tie around my ankles. Flirty … but appropriate for young eyes.”
“And if Roman wouldn’t have been here tonight?” I stare at the side of her head, wondering if she’ll look at me again before driving home.
She narrows her eyes. “I would have taken off the cardigan after you invited me into your house.”
The picture she paints in my head does all kinds of wicked things to me. Why imagining her in a striped strapless dress has such a physical effect on me is a mystery. It’s not like she suggested showing up wearing nothing but high heels and a trench coat. Dorothy Mayhem possesses her own brand of seduction, and I’m completely entangled in every part of it.
“And in this scenario, would you have kissed me after I walked you to your car?”
She turns completely red. I feel certain even her toes hidden in those blue shoes have to be red. “You’re making fun of me.”
Her comment knocks me back a good ten steps, even if my body remains right next to her. Why would she say that?

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date September 30, 2019

He wears suits and ties. He’ll one day inherit a fortune. He has a law degree. He shines his shoes, for God’s sake. What is she doing attracted to a guy like him? But she is. She so is.

She drives air boats on the bayou, drinks and cusses, and gives city boys in suits a hard time just for fun. Why can’t he get her out of his mind? But he can’t. He definitely can’t.

A weekend trip to Savannah for a fancy-schmancy party with his highfalutin family is the surefire way to prove that they have nothing in common but intense chemistry. And to maybe scratch this I’ve-never-wanted-anyone-like-I-want-you itch once or twice. Or five times.

But it takes only about twenty-four hours for the bayou girl and the city boy to figure out that they don’t really know much at all–about each other, or about themselves. And figuring all of this out is going to be downright crazy.

A hot, small town, opposites attract rom com!

Kennedy Landry and Bennett Baxter’s story!

••••••••••

REVIEW:CRAZY RICH CAJUNS is the fourth instalment in Erin Nicholas’ contemporary, adult BOYS OF THE BAYOU erotic, romance series focusing on the Landry family. This is cook and bartender Kennedy Landry, and attorney/co-owner of Boys of the Bayou Bennett Baxter’s story line. CRAZY RICH CAJUNS can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Kennedy and Bennett) CRAZY RICH CAJUNS follows the building relationship and romance between cook and bartender Kennedy Landry, and attorney/co-owner of Boys of the Bayou Bennett Baxter. As part owner of the Boys of the Bayou Swamp tours, Bennett Baxter finds himself attracted to over the top Kennedy Landry, the company’s PA and go-to person. His father’s upcoming retirement from political life means Bennett has the opportunity to show-off the woman that calls to his heart, a woman that screams all kinds of wrong for the power elite. What ensues is Kennedy and Bennett’s building relationship, and the potential fall-out as Kennedy becomes a pawn between Bennett, and the political aspirations of a powerful family.

Bennett Baxter has no desire to enter into politics although he has been groomed from an early age. An environmentalist at heart, Bennett is driven to save the Louisiana coast line, and in doing so goes up against the people in power. Kennedy Landry has never wanted much beyond her family and friends but coming face to face with the whose who of government, our heroine discovers there is more to life than serving drinks and eating Creole.

The relationship between Kennedy and Bennett has been slowly burnings since Bennett’s investment in Boys of the Bayou. There is definite palpable sexual attraction, an attraction that pulls at our couple with every encounter. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

Grandma Ellie and Grandpa Leo return as Kennedy’s mentors and family, as well as several of Kennedy’s brother-there is some fantastic fun and protectiveness between the Landry siblings. We are introduced to Bennett’s large extended family; his mother Maria and father Senator Preston Baxter, as well as Governor Charles, and uncle Teddy Benoit, and an assortment of cousins, nieces and nephews.

CRAZY RICH CAJUNS is a story of family, power and politics; a story of friendship, romance and love. The premise is engaging and entertaining; the romance is sexy and spicy; the characters are energetic and animated. CRAZY RICH CAJUNS is captivating and terrific addition to the Boys of the Bayou.

* Highland Obligation

Review:

I read the synopsis for Highland Obligation and agreed to do a review, but truth be told, I was committed for the Highlands alone.  The setting and Scots burr are enough for this reader!  Lori Ann Bailey was just the icing on the cake. 😉  Having read the previous book from the wonderful Highland Pride series, I knew its conclusion would end triumphantly.  You will not be disappointed!

Grant is furious with Isobel, his new wife.  Not only was he forced to marry her she wasn’t in love with the idea, either, buddy, but his friend is dead because of her intrusion (an accusation he’s yet to discuss with the poor lass).  Compound the death of his first wife, though that’s hardly Isobel’s fault, Isobel is a wanted woman for her illicit activities — there’s literally a bounty on her head for battlefield exploits!  The final blow?  His heart won’t stop pounding every time he’s near her!  It truly is a heady obligation in the Highland:  How can Grant not fall in love? 🙂

Tensions are understandably high, but the more Grant and Isobel interact, the more their inner thoughts betray indifference towards each other.  Grant is rankled by Isobel’s notoriety, her prowess coveted among Scottish Royalists, but Grant wants Isobel to leave her past behind; to let him take care of her…as is his duty.  Ouch.  You can imagine how well that was received, but it’s that crackling energy that kept me interested in their dynamic.  How do two alphas attain balance?

“He tossed all night, one minute wanting Isobel, the next wanting to heave her into the sea.  How was he to survive this marriage with his sanity intact?”

But just when things were beginning to align on a personal level, none more surprised than Isobel and Grant, opportunistic, vengeful sources seek out the newlyweds, and there’s only so much evasion before confrontation is inevitable.  Does “Till death do us part” include vanquishing your partner’s enemies?  How much time to decide before it’s considered uncouth?  A test of loyalty to be sure!

Isobel and Grant are protecting each other in such a surreptitious, indirect way, the other is feeling neglected, adopting a might-as-well-fend-for-myself mentality.  If only these two realized it’s not stubbornness or spite — love is stronger than pride.  They just can’t admit it!  Hope they’re not too late to put it all out there.

We are treated to quite a pair in Highland Obligation.  Grant and Isobel’s tumultuous journey is fraught with insecurity and longing and we get to explore both perspectives.  When two people are obviously meant for each other, I can’t imagine having it any other way.  Congratulations, Ms. Bailey!

Christmas From the Heart by Sheila Roberts-Review,Interview & Giveaway

Christmas From the Heart by Sheila Roberts-Review, Interview, & Giveaway

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / B&N / KOBO / Chapters Indigo / Google Play

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date September 4, 2019

Sometimes you need to look beyond the big picture to see what really matters

Olivia Berg’s charity, Christmas from the Heart, has helped generations of families in need in Pine River, Washington, but this year might be the end of the road. Hightower Enterprises, one of their biggest donors since way back when Olivia’s grandmother ran the charity, has been taken over by Ebenezer Scrooge the Second, aka CFO Guy Hightower, and he’s declared there will be no more money coming to Christmas from the Heart.

Guy is simply being practical. Hightower Enterprises needs to tighten its belt, and when you don’t have money to spare, you don’t have money to share. You’d think even the pushy Olivia Berg could understand that.

With charitable donations dwindling, Olivia’s Christmas budget depends on Hightower’s contribution. She’s focused her whole life on helping this small town, even putting her love life on hold to support her mission.

When Guy’s Maserati breaks down at the edge of the Cascade foothills, he’s relieved to be rescued by a pretty young woman who drives him to the nearby town of Pine River. Until he realizes his rescuer is none other than Olivia Berg. What’s a Scrooge to do? Plug his nose and eat fruitcake and hope she doesn’t learn his true identity before he can get out of town. What could go wrong?

••••••••

REVIEW:CHRISTMAS FROM THE HEART is a stand alone, contemporary, adult, holiday romance story line focusing on CFO of Hightower Enterprises Guy Hightower, and Olivia Berg, manager of the charity Christmas From the Heart.

Told from three third person perspectives (Olivia, Guy and Morris) CHRISTMAS FROM THE HEART follows Olivia Berg’s battle to procure and maintain donors for her struggling charity Christmas From the Heart. When Hightower Enterprises, their oldest and most prolific donor, pulls out of the charity drive, Olivia becomes aggressive in an effort to ‘guilt’ Guy Hightower into donating to her organization. Months will past, as the holidays approach, and Olivia continues to vent about Hightower’s non-participation in the holiday event. Several days before Christmas, Olivia will ‘rescue’ a stranger from the side of the road, a stranger with whom Olivia will begin to fall in love. Enter Guy Hightower aka Joe Ford. What ensues is the building friendship between Olivia and Guy, and the fall-out when Joe Ford’s true identity is revealed.

Guy Hightower had no desire to spend his Christmas holidays in Pine River, Washington, but a detour on his way home to visit family, resulted in Guy’s car needing repairs, and our hero, face to face with a woman he has battled, online, for months. Olivia Berg continues to struggle to gather money for the Christmas charity but when a seemingly well-to –do stranger lands in Pine River for the holidays, Olivia pulls out all the proverbial stops, in an effort to wine and dine for friendship and money. Meanwhile, our heroine, continues to wait for the ‘one’ believing ‘Joe Ford’ is the one to give her, her own, happily ever after.

The relationship between Olivia and Guy is an enemies to friends to something more but Olivia has no idea that the handsome stranger is the man she has ‘hated’ for close to a year. Ever persistent, Olivia battles between head and heart with her attraction to a man who is only in town for a short while, an attraction that is complicated by the affections of her home-town friendship with another man who is willing to give Olivia everything and more. There are no $ex scenes; the romance is almost non-existent; the hero keeps his distance knowing he has lied about his identity, and herein lies the problem-I didn’t feel the attraction between our leading couple. There is no romance, no love, no physical contact therefore the palpable sexual energy is missing.

The secondary and supporting characters include Guy Hightower’s Pine River rival, Morris, a man who has loved Olivia Berg for most of his life. Morris isn’t willing to sit back and let ‘Joe Ford’ take the woman he loves but Olivia struggles with her attraction to ‘Joe’ and the sure thing back home.

CHRISTMAS FOR THE HEART is a charming story; a sweet look at small town lifes.

TRC:Hi Sheila and welcome to The Reading Café.

Congratulations on the recent release of CHRISTMAS FROM THE HEART?

Sheila: Thank you, and thank you for having me.

TRC:We would like to start with some background information. Would you please tell us something about yourself?

Sheila: I live in the Pacific Northwest and have been happily married for about a million years. Before I stumbled into my writing career I was busy trying to make it as a songwriter. That didn’t work out as planned but that’s okay. I love sitting around making up stuff!

TRC:Who or what influenced your career in writing?

Sheila: I had been writing stories since I was a child, so I guess you’d say I was already priming the pump back then. I’ve had some wonderful friends along the way who encouraged me when the going got tough and will always be grateful to my friends Susan Wiggs, Debbie Macomber, and Jill Barnett for their support.

TRC:What challenges or difficulties did you encounter writing and publishing this story?

Sheila: I can’t say that I struggled very much with this story. I loved my characters and
it was simply fun to write. But then, Christmas is my favorite holiday and I love Christmas stories.

TRC: Would you please tell us something about the premise of CHRISTMAS FORM THE HEART?

Sheila: This is a Scrooge story, with this particular Scrooge stuck in the home town where the woman whose charity he left hanging lives. (Strictly a business decision, you know. Nothing personal.)I’m happy to report that my modern day Scrooge learns his lesson.

TRC:Is the story part of a series?

Sheila: This particular book stands on its own.

TRC:What kind of research/plotting did you do, and how long did you spend researching plotting before beginning CHRISTMAS FROM THE HEART.?

Sheila: No matter how easy you think a book is going to be to write, there’s always research to do. For this one it was researching the distance from one place to another, calculating how long it would take to drive. And, of course, business details had to be run by someone as I am not a corporate girl. In fact, I remember my husband once shaking his head and telling me I’d never have made it in the corporate world. Good thing I was happy in the world I’m in!

TRC:How difficult is it to write a ‘holiday/Christmas’ story line- off-season?

Sheila: I’m always happy to celebrate Pre-Christmas with a story so this was fun.

TRC:Do you believe the cover image plays a deciding factor for many readers in the
process of selecting a book or new series to read?

Sheila: It’s hard to speak to that with any authority since I’m neither an artist nor a marketing expert. All I can say is I personally am always attracted to a pretty cover.

TRC:When writing a storyline, do the characters direct the writing or do you direct the
characters?

Sheila: I direct them and they so as they’re told. ? One of the things I love about being a
writer is the fact that it’s the one place I get to be completely in charge!

TRC:The mark of a good writer is to pull the reader into the storyline so that they
experience the emotions along with the characters. What do you believe a writer must
do to make this happen? Where do you believe writer’s fail in this endeavor?

Sheila: I think a writer really needs to be able to step onto a character’s heart and
mind. If you do that then your character’s feelings and behavior will ring true. Sometimes writers focus on all bad in their villains and all food in their heroes, and that tends to make characters one dimensional because we’re all a mix of good and bad, wise and foolish.

TRC:Do you listen to music while writing? If so, does the style of music influence the storyline direction? Characters?

Sheila: I’ll sometimes listen to music… always instrumental though. Otherwise, I get
distracted and start singing along!

TRC:What do you believe is the biggest misconception people have about authors?

Sheila: That what we do is easy.

TRC:How should authors measure a book’s success?

Sheila: If readers enjoy reading what you wrote then you’re a success.

TRC:What is something that few, if anyone, knows about you?

Sheila: I’m pathetically impatient.

TRC: Who is your favorite author (living or dead)?

Sheila: Oh, good grief, I have a ton! John Grisham, Lee Child, Donald E. Westlake, Susan
Wiggs, to name a few.

TRC:On what are you currently working?

Sheila: I’m actually working on next year’s Christmas book! Ho, ho, ho.

TRC:Would you like to add anything else?

Sheila: Only that I am so grateful to be able to something I love so much for a living.
Thank God for readers. They make that possible.

With a dash of Christmas magic…

Learn a little something about following their hearts…

Carter Montgomery broke the family mold when he went to culinary school. Now a successful restaurateur, he’s at a crossroads: should he continue on his successful path or look for a new challenge? What he needs is time alone to think things through. But his matchmaking family has other ideas…

Emery Monaghan’s no-good fiancé has embroiled her in scandal and she needs a way out. When mentor Eliza Montgomery offers her a refuge, she’s relieved―until she realizes that the deal means rubbing elbows with Eliza’s son Carter―Emery’s childhood nemesis.

•••••••••

REVIEW: A DASH OF CHRISTMAS by Samantha Chase is the ninth and final instalment in the author’s contemporary, adult THE MONTGOMERY BROTHERS romance series focusing on the Montgomery siblings and cousins. This is chef and restaurateur Carter Montgomery, and Emery Monaghan’s story line. A DASH OF CHRISTMAS can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Carter and Emery) with an introductory chapter from sisters-in-law Eliza and Monica Montgomery A DASH OF CHRISTMAS focuses on Eliza and Monica’s attempts to find a love interest for Eliza’s son Carter Montgomery. When her fiancé with political aspirations is caught, on numerous occasions, with his proverbial pants down, Emery Monaghan’s finds herself seeking shelter, far away, for the paparazzi and unsupportive family who are defending her obnoxious ex. With an offer to help write and edit a Montgomery cookbook for the upcoming holiday season, Emery will come face to face with her childhood nemesis, in the guise of chef and restaurateur Carter Montgomery. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Carter and Emery as they are forced to live together while they work on the book, and the potential fall-out as their time together comes to a close.

Emery Monaghan was all but forced into the relationship with Congressman Derek Whitman, a relationship that her parents supported and adored but Emery knew Derek had been unfaithful, and the sh*t was about to hit the fan. A formerly independent woman, Emery found herself floundering in a world of embarrassment and heart break when the news broke about Derek’s affairs. When Eliza Montgomery offered Emery a chance to ‘hide away’ from prying eyes, Emery jumped at the chance but was caught unaware when Carter Montgomery was pulled back into her life. Carter Montgomery had no idea he would be working with Emery Monoghan, the young woman who saw Carter as nothing more than the antagonizing boy who upset her life but Carter hid his affections for our story line heroine, affections he was hoping to bring to into the present.

The relationship between Carter and Emery is an enemies to lovers; an opposites attract, acrimonious childhood friendship that disguised Carter’s attraction to the little girl he would grow to love. The $ex scenes are passionate but mostly implied.

There is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters including many of the previous story line couples. We are briefly introduced to Emery’s ex fiancé Derek Whitman, and her social climbing parents who are willing to turn a blind eye to Derek’s behavior.

A DASH OF CHRISTMAS is a story of family, friendship, second chances, and love; an enjoyable and sweet tale of one man’s professional struggle, and one woman’s spirited attempts to make it on her own. The premise is spirited and emotional; the romance is tender; the characters are energetic and inspiring.

She motioned to the table. “Let’s eat!”
He joined her and found it hard to focus on the food in front of him—he was still in awe of the transformation of the house. “I can’t believe you pulled this off.”
She smiled and picked up her burger. “I’m extremely organized and efficient. In other words, I had a plan.”
Picking up his own burger, he looked at her and saw how pleased she was, unsure if it was because of a job well-done or the greasy treat she was eating. His stomach growled, and he needed to ignore how unhealthy the meal was and just…go for it. “Well, color me impressed,” he said, referring to her, but realized it could also have meant the meal.
It was surprisingly good.
And satisfying.
When neither had spoken for several minutes because they were too busy eating, Emery leaned over and said, “Welcome to the Dark Side. We have empty calories.”
Carter almost choked on his food but managed to swallow it down before reaching for his drink. Her sense of humor was something he was finding to be utterly charming.
Add that to the list.
There was no time to dwell on it, however, because he was almost done with his burger and was seriously enjoying it.
Now that deserved some dwelling.
“Admit it,” Emery said from beside him, leaning back in her chair. “You enjoyed it.”
“Never.”
She laughed, husky and sexy, and…he seriously needed a distraction.
Reaching over, she looked in the second bag and then gave him a knowing glance. “Who are these chicken nuggets for?”
“Oh, um… I thought you might like them,” he said, not wanting to look at her. Carter busied himself with finishing his fries—which were salted to perfection.
“Hmm. I don’t know if I could eat them right now.” He heard her rummaging around in the bag again. “And what about this? Is this some sort of apple pie?”
Busted!
“Maybe.”
She laughed again—loud and hearty. “Carter Montgomery, you better admit right now that you bought all of this for you because you remember what it’s like to eat like a normal person!”
He lost the battle with his own laughter. “I will do no such thing.”
Standing, Emery took the bag with the extra food and made her way across the kitchen. “Well then, as much as I appreciate the thought, I’m way too full to eat another bite, so…I’ll just throw this out.”
“Wait…what?” he cried, coming to his feet. “Why would you do that?”
With a careless shrug, she replied, “These things never reheat well, so it’s pointless to save it. Besides, what do you care? I can give you the five bucks they cost you, if you’d like.” The bag was dangling over the trash pail, and the look on her face was full of challenge.
And amusement.
“Emery,” he began as he took a step toward her. “Just…put the bag down.”
“And nobody gets hurt?” she teased before letting out a very feminine giggle.
Deciding to stall, Carter studied her. “I just hate to see food go to waste.”
“All you have to do is admit you got it for you. Just say the words and I’ll put the food back on the table.” She shook the bag for good measure. “Come on. I dare you.”
Those were fighting words.
Before he could question it, he lunged for her and Emery let out a high-pitched squeal before taking off around the kitchen island. By their third time around, Carter caught her around the waist and spun her while she cried out, “Uncle! Uncle!” They were both laughing hysterically by the time he collapsed back in his chair with her in his lap. It took several minutes for them to calm down.
“Man, you just cannot stand to be proven wrong,” she said, but made no attempt to move from the circle of his arms.
This was dangerous territory. He knew that. It felt far too good to hold her. Turning his head, he inhaled the smell of her shampoo, daring to lean in further until his lips were touching her ear.
Softly, he murmured, “Just give me the apple pie, and nobody gets hurt.”
It was meant to be funny—a small joke to go along with all the teasing they’d been doing—but it didn’t feel so funny when Emery let out a low moan at his words.
“Make me,” she whispered, and—holy crap. It was all Carter could do not to haul her over his shoulder and take her inside to his bedroom.
Her name came out as a plea as Carter ran his tongue along the shell of her ear. Emery trembled in his arms as they tightened around her. The bag fell to the floor and she shifted ever so slightly so they were nose to nose. Then it was her turn to sigh his name. Her hand came up and cupped his cheek, and for a moment, he was afraid to move. Afraid to breathe. He didn’t want to risk doing anything to break the spell or ruin the moment.
It would kill him.
Reaching up, he mimicked her pose by cupping her cheek. He owed it to her to be honest.
“This isn’t about making either of us stop talking,” he said gruffly. “This is about me kissing you because I have to.”
Slowly, Emery licked her lips. “Good.”
It was as if everything happened in slow motion from there—like they were being drawn together by forces beyond their control, and when their lips touched, they both sighed and eased into it.
All Carter could think was how this was possibly his sweetest victory ever with Emery—knowing she wanted his kiss just as much as he needed to kiss her.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date September 28, 2019

Cooper and Elizabeth Townsend are from two very different worlds – she’s an attorney and he’s an outlaw biker. At first, she was just an escape he needed, but now she’s everything to him, even though their relationship remains a secret.

After his world is blown apart, Cooper is no longer the same man he was before. He’s questioning everything and wondering how the Savage Kings MC are going to fix the mess they made.

It isn’t easy for him to admit that he needs Elizabeth’s help, knowing she’s resisted becoming a part of his life. She just doesn’t think the two of them make sense together. Cooper lives in the constant chaos that Elizabeth tries to control in the courtroom.

Despite the danger, she decides to go all in and do whatever it takes to help Cooper heal.

Unfortunately, no matter how hard he tries, nothing goes Cooper’s way, not with Elizabeth, the MC, or the redemption he desperately seeks.

Trying and failing to do the right thing, Cooper finally submits to his demons, letting them have everything they crave – the violence, vengeance, and destruction because he doesn’t think he has anything else to lose.

Before it’s too late, Elizabeth and the other Kings will have to try and stop Cooper from making a mistake he’ll never come back from.

REVIEW: COOPER is the tenth instalment in Lane Hart and DB West’s contemporary, adult SAVAGE KINGS MC erotic, MC romance story line focusing on the Savage Kings MC. This is attorney Elizabeth ‘Liz’ Townsend, and Cooper Cummings’ story line. COOPER can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary but I recommend reading the series in order for back story and history as there is an on-going premise throughout.

Told form dual first person perspectives (Liz and Cooper) COOPER follows in the aftermath of the explosion that destroyed Savage Ink tattoo studio, and the Savage Kings MC strip club Avalon, killing a dancer, and severely injuring our story line hero. Two years earlier, Cooper Cummings began a ‘sex’ only affair with his attorney Elizabeth Townsend, but Cooper’s demands for something more push Elizabeth out of his life until desperate times called for desperate measures. The death of Jenna Higgins left her four month old daughter Ruby without a family, and Cooper made it his mission to bring Ruby home into the fold. Needing a ‘marriage of convenience’ in order to adopt Ruby, Cooper asks Liz for her hand in marriage, a marriage to which Liz agrees, in name only. What ensues is the building romance and love between Liz and Cooper, and the potential fall-out as Cooper struggles with what will never be.

Liz Townsend doesn’t do relationships and her ‘sex-only’ affair with Cooper Cummings was exactly what she needed but when Cooper developed feelings for our story line heroine, Liz panicked and kicked Cooper out of her life. Cooper Cummings didn’t know when he started to fall for his beautiful attorney but knew he blew the day he asked for something more. The explosion at the club left Cooper struggling in more ways than one but he never expected to need Liz more than he did at the moment.

The relationship between Liz and Cooper is a friends with benefits that turns into something more. Cooper is willing to risk his heart but Liz struggles with the possibility of destroying her career if caught associating with the Savage Kings MC. The $ex scenes are intimate, erotic and intense, without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

There is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters including club president Torin Fury; MC members Chase, Abe, Reece, Dalton, Cedric, Miles, Jade, Ian and Gabe; Liz’s childhood friend Owen, and secretary Barbara. Ian and Gabe’s story line is next.

COOPER is a story of betrayal and vengeance; family, friendship, acceptance and love. The premise is captivating and engaging; the romance is heavy and hot; the characters are energetic, colorful and sassy. If you are a fan of the MC romance genre, I recommend giving the Savage Kings MC a try.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date September 24, 2019

Senior Detective Cat Day has one hard and fast rule about dating: no cops. They live hard and die young—a truth she’s faced every day since her fiancé’s tragic death several years ago. But when rookie Jace Sutton shows up to work the same burglary investigation, she feels desire she hasn’t felt in years.
Jace knows what he wants the minute Detective Day strolls onto his crime scene in heels and a pencil skirt tailored by God himself. He wants to thaw the legendary Ice Queen, and it only takes one hot, dirty night for Jace to realize he wants more. Much, much more.
But more is the last thing Cat wants from any cop—especially a playboy rookie like Jace. As the burglary investigation heats up and he repeatedly puts himself in danger, Cat must ask herself if Jace will be as reckless with her heart as he is with his life.

*****
Misadventures is a romantic series of spicy standalone novels, each written or co-written by some of the best names in romance. The stories are scandalous, refreshing, and, of course, incredibly sexy. They’re the perfect bedside read, a ‘quick blush’ for the reader who loves a page-turning romance.

•••••••••

REVIEW: Misadventures in Blue begins with rookie Jace Sutton making the scene of a burglary. Once he assesses the scene, he remembers that a senior detective, Cat Day, had put out an email about some burglaries that had the same m.o. He notifies his superior, who in turn notifies Cat. Jace has heard about Cat and her nickname, the ice queen, but when he sees her all he can think about is how incredibly beautiful she is.

When Cat Day arrives at the scene of yet another burglary, she can’t help but notice Jace Sutton. The instant attraction leaves her unnerved. She knows of her nickname, one that she has for good reason. Since she lost her fiancé, who happened to be a fellow cop, years ago, she vowed then to never be involved with another law enforcement officer. Yet her and Jace’s attraction to each other is palpable, and she does something she never thought she would ever do: invite him to her house. Little did either of them know how much one down and dirty night would change both of their lives.

Misadventures in Blue is a fast paced read. Both characters are nicely written and their chemistry is off the charts, even though Cat is a bit older than Jace. Cat continues to try and push Jace away and almost succeeds. Jace doesn’t care about the age difference and falls hard for Cat. He knows that she is scared about being involved with another cop, and does everything in his power to make her see past all of that. He also wants her to want him for more than just the down and dirty sex. For me, personally, the relationship was purely sexual. But, this is a novella, so there wasn’t a lot of character development. However, it was an enjoyable read. If you’re a fan of down and dirty and immediate attraction, you’ll not go wrong with this one.

REVIEW:SEDUCED BY A DEMON KING is the seventeenth instalment in Felicity Heaton’s contemporary, adult ETERNAL MATES paranormal, fantasy series. This is Demon King Tegan of the Second Realm of Hell, and succubus Suki’s story line. SEDUCED BY A DEMON KING can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous instalments is revealed where necessary. There is a slight cross-over with the author’s LONDON VAMPIRES series.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Tegan and Suki) SEDUCED BY A DEMON KING follows Suki, a reluctant succubus who struggles with the art of seduction. Forced by the elders to seduce a man, Suki finds herself at Underground, a London bar for the paranormal, where she will meet her future. Enter Demon King Tegan of the Second Realm of Hell, and the man with whom Suki will fall in love. What ensues is the slow building romance and relationship between Suki and Tegan, and the potential fall-out when Tegan discovers he was a pawn in a game between Suki and her sisters.

King Tegan is a reluctant king. He lived his life on the battlefield but the death of his brother one thousand years earlier found Tegan ascending to a throne he did not want. Heading to the human world in an effort to procure more books for his extensive library, Tegan discovers he is out of his element when it comes to women and love. Suki’s nickname amongst her kind is ‘sucky’. A succubus who is reluctant or unable to seduce, Suki struggles with everyday life. Meeting King Tegan gives Suki hope for the future, hope that is quickly dissolved when the truth is revealed.

The relationship between Tegan and Suki is slow to develop as Tegan is inexperienced in the art of wooing a woman; and Suki fears she will kill the man who calls to her heart. Unaware that Tegan is the Second King, Suki only knows that she wants a happily ever after, a HEA she has been told does not exist. The $ex scenes are passionate and intimate, without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

SEDUCED BY A DEMON KING is a story line told in narrative, through memories, thoughts, emotions and introspection, as well as interaction with others. As will most of the author’s stories and series, the face to face conversations are limited but the overall presentation is energetic and strong. The premise is engaging and captivating; the romance is seductive; the characters are colorful and powerful.

Tegan’s battle plan was sound.
A simple feint. Trick the eye. A stroke of genius.
With a dash of the fates smiling upon him, he might escape this prison tonight.
This castle had been his cage for a thousand years, since the night his brother had been murdered, the throne beneath him a shackle that held him fast, unbreakable except through death.
He ran a steady hand over his right horn, feeling the smoothness and the slight bumps where the enchanted gold had been inlaid into the grooves he had carved himself. Some of the bumps were barely noticeable, a sign of how many times he had performed this act since Edyn had died.
The plan was sound.
But still a trickle of nerves ran in his blood.
Or was that excitement?
It had been so long since he had experienced that emotion that he was unfamiliar with it now. He pondered that as he swigged from his pewter mug, the brew sweet on his tongue. One of the few pleasures he had left in his long and tedious life.
Excitement. Fear. Pain. The high of victory.
Everything he had loved had been stolen from him the night he had been thrust into a role he had never wanted.
Although perhaps he would have lost it all anyway, even if his brother had survived.
Peace.
He cursed that word.
He cursed Edyn.
He cursed the throne.
He cursed his kingdom.
Tegan mentally took that one back.
As much as he despised the truce with the First Realm of the demons and the elf kingdom, as much as he despised his throne and his advisers who sought to keep him tethered to it, safely holed up in his castle, he couldn’t blame his people for what had happened to him.
Perhaps he was the one who was cursed.
Cursed to lead a dull and peaceful life for the rest of his days.
Tegan leaned to his right, dropped his chin on his upturned palm as he planted his elbow against the arm of his black throne, and huffed.
He had been born for war, not peace.
Yet here he was, presiding over a feast celebrating the anniversary of the truce his brother had formed with the neighbouring demon realm and the elves.
Celebrating peace.
He could practically feel his life draining from him, one grain of sand at a time through an hourglass that was shielded by layers and layers of steel designed to keep it safe from harm.
What sort of demon wanted to be safe?
Peaceful?
He craved battle, adventure. A glorious war or two every decade wouldn’t go amiss either. But here he sat, his backside stuck to a throne he wanted no part of, doomed to rule a peaceful kingdom while the other demon kings indulged in lavish wars, were out there on the frontline spilling blood and breaking bones.
He lifted his cup to his lips again and took a deeper draught of the mead.
Gods, he was bored.
Cursed.
It was Edyn’s fault.
His older brother was meant to rule while Tegan did all the fighting as commander of their Royal Legion, not broker a damned peace treaty and then die, leaving the Second Realm in Tegan’s hands.
He growled low in his throat.
A few of the warriors celebrating at the long feast tables that lined the grand hall of the castle paused to look his way, their brew or their females forgotten as they checked on him. Tegan glared at them all, tempted to flash his emerging fangs as his mood took a sharp dark turn, plunging him into the mire of thoughts that had been his own personal hell since the night someone had placed a crown upon his head.
The warriors returned to their drinks, laughter spilling from their lips as they toasted him and cheered, as if that would lift his mood. He drummed his short claws against the layer of stubble on his cheek as he surveyed the room, dark gaze passing over the towering carved black columns that supported the vaulted ceiling high above him.
The candles in the middle of each long black wooden table illuminated the faces of his warriors, playing over their dark hair and horns, flickering over their bare chests as they shoved and laughed, caroused with the females he had brought in for the celebration.
At least someone at the feast was enjoying themselves.
Edyn had always said the people came first.
Something he and his brother had agreed upon. Although Tegan liked to place his warriors first, a hang up from his days serving in the legions, leading them and witnessing the toll battle took on them. Now peace took its toll on them instead.
So he had agreed to tonight’s feast.
His men needed to blow off some steam, and if drinking and females could supply them with an outlet for it, he would gladly sit through a thousand boring feasts. He couldn’t give them war after all.
He had once contented himself with feasts, mead and females. It had worked for a while, taking the edge off, but now he found them dull.
What he wanted now was a battle. A war. It was the only thing that could improve his mood. The news from the other demon realms wasn’t helping. Several of them had gone to war recently, and although he had lobbied his advisers and made a valiant attempt to let the Second Realm join the Third Realm in their battle against the Fifth, their answer had been the same as always.
He must maintain the peace.
Tegan huffed again.
Maintaining the peace was exhausting. It went against his very nature.
He went to take another mouthful of his brew and frowned at the bottom of the large pewter mug when he found it empty. He held it out to his right and the male standing there refilled it for him. He nodded, lifting his mug to thank the male, and drank deeply, emptying half the tankard in one go.
A few of the warriors in the room tugged females away with them.
Almost time to put his plan into action.
He just needed to be patient for a little longer.
But patience wasn’t his strongest virtue. It lacked a little.
He tapped his foot, jiggling the female seated on his left thigh. One he had completely forgotten about, even though she was about to become a key factor in his battle plan.
She immediately went into action, fawning over him, running fingers over his shoulder, shifting the material of his loose white shirt as she murdered his language so badly, he struggled to interpret her meaning. “My lord, your muscles. You are strong.”
Tegan slid her a look he hoped conveyed how irritating she was. It didn’t stop her. She prattled on, all smiles as she flicked blonde hair over her shoulder to reveal a hefty amount of cleavage. Unsurprising given how tight her red leather bodice was.
He wasn’t sure what species she was, and he didn’t care.
He tuned her out as he surveyed his warriors. Were they really content with feasting and females? He wasn’t.
How was he meant to continue like this?
He was a warrior at heart, but every day he had to pretend to be something else. Worse, he had to be someone else. He no longer recognised the male who obeyed the wishes of his advisers even though he was tired of hearing them all tell him he had to place the peace of the kingdom above all else. He no longer recognised the male who sat on the throne, listening to the complaints of his people.
They were not content, not as they were meant to be anyway. Many came to him to complain about everything from their neighbours to the travelling traders he permitted to roam through the kingdom to sell their wares.
He settled his gaze on two males, both close to his seven-foot height, both packed with as much muscle as he was. Commanders like he had been. Demons born for war. They weren’t content. They stood to one side, had been there all night, deep in discussion and ignoring the advances of the females.
Talking of war? Of glorious days long past but not forgotten?
He wanted to speak with them, to relive the days they had fought beside each other, the great battles they had witnessed in their years and the close shaves that had brought them dancing dangerously with Death.
The female seated on his knee showed no sign of moving though and the two guards who flanked his throne, standing slightly behind it as if he wouldn’t notice them there, would stop him if he tried to speak with them. No doubt they had strict orders from the court to keep him from talk of war and battles tonight.
The two males glanced his way, lingered and dipped their heads, raising their tankards at the same time. He could see the weariness in their eyes, as if they were a reflection of him. The inactivity grated on them as viciously as it did on him.
If he could give them war, he would do so in a heartbeat.
Tegan mentally took that back too.
As much as he hated the peacefulness of his kingdom, as much as he craved doing battle, he couldn’t just go to war. The majority of his people had become accustomed to this dreadful peace. They enjoyed it, finding pleasure in having a land dominated by stability and peace.
He was their king, whether he wanted it or not, and he couldn’t deny them that which they desired—a kingdom not at war.
More of his men left with females in tow. Soon.
The night was growing older, the feast becoming louder, the merriment infectious as the gathered warriors consumed mead by the barrel and sampled their females, selecting the one who would pass the night in their bed.
Soon.
He had successfully managed to pass the day evading his advisers, which had lifted his mood. Or that might have been the punishing training routine he had indulged in, competing in mock battle with four of the finest warriors in the Royal Legion. They were always kind enough to help him fill the tedious hours of the day and grant him some escape.
Tonight, he had meant to carry out his usual method of filling the dark hours.
A long time ago, that would have meant bedding one or more females, living up to the rumours that he had a harem of them at his disposal. He had quickly grown bored of females after ascending to the throne though.
Females were too compliant, always too willing to throw themselves at his feet in a grand effort to please the king.
So now he filled his night hours with a different sort of entertainment. A guilty pleasure he found himself indulging in more and more often recently.
Reading.
His aide called him voracious. He had a thirst for knowledge that kept the male constantly teleporting back and forth to the mortal world to bring him more books. Since becoming king, he had learned twelve languages, both written and spoken. He had studied the culture and history of every mortal country, and every fae and immortal realm. He had learned about music and art, and as much as he could about the modern human world.
He had read books on almost every subject imaginable.
He had a library in his private floors of the castle, a sanctuary few knew about, one he was adding new shelves to and expanding every year.
That was where he had intended to pass the night after managing to escape the feast.
Only he had finished his last book while dressing for the feast.
So his plans had changed.
Had grown more thrilling.
He meant to escape more than the feast.
More than the castle.
He meant to escape Hell for the first time in a thousand years.
Just the thought of seeing the modern human world with his own eyes had adrenaline surging through his veins and he couldn’t contain the smile that tugged at his lips as his heart soared. He turned it on the female as she sidled closer, attempting to conceal the true reason for his excitement in case the guards were watching him.
She fluttered long black lashes, her grey eyes sparkling at him as she stroked the horns that curled from behind the top of his ears, her fingertips lightly tracing the curve of them down to his lobes in a way that did nothing for him.
She leaned in closer still and murmured in his ear, her use of the demonic tongue leaving a lot to be desired as she mangled his language in an attempt to seduce him. “Your horns are so big.”
He supposed she meant to use the old adage about a demon’s horns having a correlation with the size of his manhood.
Some part of him felt that he should be enjoying her attention and the feast, but he wasn’t.
Something wasn’t right, and it hadn’t been for a long time.
The female pressed against him, her breasts threatening to spill from her corset as she leaned her side against his chest and her arm came to rest along his shoulder. She pushed her fingers through the longer lengths of his black hair and skimmed them over the shorn sides to tease the more sensitive base of his horns.
He still felt nothing.
He swigged his mead as she traced patterns on his chest, working her way over to the lacing on his shirt. She toyed with the ties, curled them around her fingers and tugged, clearly intending for him to move closer.
He took another mouthful instead.
He wasn’t interested in the female. He hadn’t asked for her company, had given her no indication he desired her attention, yet here she was, fawning over him.
“You have masculine beauty,” she husked, and he gritted his teeth. Whoever had taught her to speak the demon tongue had done a bad job of it. “Strong male.”
Did she think her praise would rouse his interest and make him want her?
It had quite the opposite effect.
He had lost interest in carousing with females when he had realised they were only interested in one thing—his throne.
He despised the fact every female he met viewed him as a throne, not a male. They wanted the power he could give them, the status. They didn’t really want him. Of course, he could sleep with them and discard them, slaking some of his hunger on them, but where was the fun in that?
He preferred a challenge, something that would appease his hunger for battle. If he couldn’t do battle physically, he would do it mentally. He wanted a female who would be that challenge for him, one who would make him fight for her.
His warriors and his younger brother Ryker, the current prince, weren’t complaining about his lack of interest in the females. All the more for them.
Gods, Tegan envied Ryker a little. He had freedom, came and went as he pleased, while Tegan was locked in his castle, only allowed out with an entire entourage of advisers and bodyguards, and even then it was only to official functions where the kingdom needed to be represented by its king.
Ryker had everything Tegan had lost, and Tegan would give anything to return to that life.
His dark eyes scanned over the feast. Edyn would have lapped this up. He would have loved sitting on the throne with a female on his knees, soaking up her praise and that of his people.
Tegan hated it.
A thousand years he had endured this dull and unsatisfying life.
That changed tonight.
His battle plan was sound, everything was in place. His strategy had been checked from all angles, every little thing accounted for and covered. All that was left was to put it into action.
He signalled the male to his right, who eagerly bustled over, his jug at the ready. Rather than allowing the male to fill his cup, Tegan placed it on the tray in the male’s other hand and nodded.
Tegan grasped the female’s slender wrist, pulled it from behind his head and pushed her forwards, forcing her off him. She tottered a little, giggled and swayed against him as he stood.
The two males guarding him immediately moved forwards.
Tegan turned on them. “I do not require an audience.”
Both males dipped their heads and pressed their right hands to their bare chests.
He cut them off before they could mention standing guard outside his rooms. “You are done for the night. Enjoy the feast and the females.”
The two exchanged a glance and then looked beyond him, to the males who were still celebrating, pawing at the females on their laps and calling out to the others that wandered around the room, seeking a partner.
The younger male on his right looked as if he might mention the orders the court had given them, but the other male grabbed him by the back of his neck and pushed him forwards, guiding him towards the nearest females.
Phase one of his plan successfully completed, Tegan tugged the blonde female towards the side door of the grand hall, one only he could access. She stumbled along behind him, still throwing compliments and things he supposed were meant to sound seductive. He paid no attention to her as he mounted the spiral steps, eager to reach his rooms and move on to phase two.
The female slowed him down, so he turned and scooped her up into his arms and took the steps two at a time instead, making swift progress towards his private floors. She stroked his chest and shoulders, even went as far as pressing kisses to his throat as he kept his focus ahead of him.
Almost there.
Light chased back the darkness ahead of him and he quickened his pace, his heart pounding harder as he thought about what he was going to do.
He set the female down as soon as he reached the broad torchlit corridor at the end of the stairs and pulled her along behind him as he stormed towards the door of his apartment. She continued to twitter, babbled words that were lost on him as he went over his plan again, ensuring everything was perfect.
He shoved the wooden door open with the flat of his hand and pulled her inside, shoved her aside and released her as he closed the door behind him. She moved around his drawing room, saying things he didn’t hear as she studied the paintings that hung on the black stone walls and ran her fingers over the glass that covered the long low display cases that lined them, eyeing his collection of weapons, helmets and other things from all the regions of Hell.
His trophies of war.
She fell silent, her eyes landing on him as he pulled his shirt off over his head and discarded it on the wooden floor.
Her throat worked on a hard swallow and she sidled towards him, heat kindling in her eyes as she approached. She raked them over his chest and stomach and that heat became a fire.
“You are beautiful, my lord.”
Tegan turned away from her, grabbed the black shirt he had laid over the back of his wine-red wingback armchair before leaving for the feast and donned it. Disappointment flared in her eyes.
He ignored her and tackled the buttons on his shirt. Buttons. They were fiddly small things, irritating him as he fumbled with them, trying to close the shirt of mortal fashion that Ryker had given him as a present.
He wasn’t sure how his younger brother could wear such things.
It was tight and restrictive, made his back itch as his wings pushed for freedom. He focused to keep them hidden as he adjusted to the confining feel of the shirt. If he attempted to swing his sword arm, he would rip the damned garment to pieces.
But then, he supposed it hadn’t been made for fighting in.
When he had first tried it on at Ryker’s insistence, his brother had assured him it was all the ‘rage’ for males to wear such tight clothing in the human world, an apparent attempt to reveal their physique whilst still being dressed.
Tegan glanced at himself in the mirror above the fireplace behind him when he was done with the buttons. He arched an eyebrow at his reflection. He supposed the cut of the cloth was rather complimentary. It stretched across his broad chest and tightly gripped his biceps, and even hinted at his muscular stomach.
“You look divine,” the female purred in approval in the common tongue and he conceded that he did look rather good in human fashion. “Do I get to peel it off you?”
He flicked her a glare, stooped and picked up his coin purse from the table beside his armchair. She swayed towards him, her eyes on his chest, clearly intent on unbuttoning the shirt he had just put on. He moved around her, crossed the room to a set of black wooden drawers, and pulled the one on the right open. He picked up a smaller coin purse and hung it with his other one on the waist of his black leathers.
He turned back to the female.
He would get into trouble with his advisers if they got wind of what he had done, but he didn’t care. He needed a change of scenery. He had been stuck in this castle for the last thousand years. It was time he got out.
It was only going to be for a short time. Everyone would think he was sleeping with the female in his quarters. He would be back before he was missed.
He just wanted a taste of the current mortal world to see if it was as exciting as the stories painted it to be, filled with marvellous technology that sounded like fantasy to him. He had heard tales of it from the Third King and his mate, glorious stories of a world that was vastly different to the one he remembered.
Electronic communication devices that could be used to speak with someone across the globe? Impossible.
Giant metal birds that carried mortals to far-flung destinations? Laughable.
But he had heard the stories coming from the Third Realm and the king himself had told Tegan all about the miracles of mortal technology. Thorne was using the technology to bring electricity into the demon realm he ruled.
Electricity.
Tegan glanced at the sconces burning on the black wall, at the dark wooden furniture of the office that adjoined his drawing room, and the paintings hanging on the walls. Mortals had things that took paintings. No, that wasn’t right. They called them photographs. They displayed them on their walls rather than paintings now, and such photographs appeared on electronic devices too.
Thorne had shown him such a strange device when the demon king had brought his new queen to visit. The mortal queen of the Third Realm had one in her possession.
It had been magic.
It had awed him.
A flat rectangle no bigger than Tegan’s hands side-by-side but it had been colourful and bright, and she had touched it and things had happened. His advisers had deemed it witchcraft of the darkest degree and warned him against it, but Tegan had been fascinated. He wanted to see more of these mortal inventions.
He wanted to possess them.
It wasn’t as if he was committing a crime by leaving the kingdom. He was king. He only meant to go out to a place the Third King talked about and also purchase some more books. Small steps. If the mission was successful, perhaps he would go out again.
He grabbed hold of the female. She pressed closer to him, sliding her hands over his chest and leaning into his embrace. Tegan kept hold of her as he summoned his portal. The black abyss opened beneath them and the female squeaked as they dropped into it. They landed in the free realm, in the middle of the town he had once visited. People on the black cobbled street between the obsidian stone buildings stopped to stare as he pushed her away from him and distanced himself.
“This is as far as you go,” Tegan said.
Confusion danced in her pale grey eyes and she tried to get closer to him again. He backed off a step, maintaining the distance between them, and the confusion turned to anger as he spoke.
“I am leaving now.” He took the smaller coin purse from his belt and tossed it at her.
She caught it and he teleported before she could give him hell, nerves and excitement clashing inside him as he dropped back into the black abyss.
Heading to the mortal world.
That filled him with an unsettling, but thrilling sensation.
His life had been static for the last thousand years.
Now he was going to taste freedom.
And something told him his life would never be the same again.
