Maximillian De Leon, the towering god with eyes of gold and pecs of steel, is the most incredible lover she’s ever had. But Allie wakes with confusion when her French lover tells her he’s actually Prince Maximillian, and he hasn’t seen the light of day since 1789.

Crazy or not, Max De Leon is the hottest man Allie’s ever met―and the perfect piece on her arm to impress the corporate brass and take her career to the next level. So what if he keeps claiming he has to marry her to break a centuries-old curse in order to stay alive. He’ll get over that soon enough…right?

Misadventures is a romantic series of spicy standalone novels, each written or co-written by some of the best names in romance. The stories are scandalous, refreshing, and, of course, incredibly sexy. They’re the perfect bedside read, a ‘quick blush’ for the reader who loves a page-turning romance

REVIEW: This is a short story, it’s from a collection of authors, so none are connected.

Max is living on borrowed time.

Maximillian was escaping the French Revolution (he had already seen his parents killed) with the help of his loyal servants. But Max wasn’t expecting to shoved into a wardrobe, and the woman he thought of as a second mother, to start muttering strange words and lights to come from her hands……

He’s been thrown forward in time. His mission is to find the angel he saw in a vision. He needs to find her. But there’s a catch, he has to get this woman to fall in love with him, and she has to announce it in front of witnesses.

Allie loves fashion, it’s her career, it’s her life, and nothing is more important. So why would her friends send her to France. Nothing to do but drink wine and visit cold and damp castles. Allie couldn’t care less, she just wants to go home.

Max and Allie meet and it’s practically lust at first sight.

We know Maximillian has to win Allie over, and the frustration he faces when all she wants is his body, and he wants to give her his heart.

Will he get Allie to publicly declare her love for him? What happens if she doesn’t? And does Allie believe Max?

Sex scenes were a little too much for me (it’s a short story and I thought less sex more content). I did like Max, he knows Allie is meant for him, so to see his frustration was a nice change. I didn’t really connect with Allie, I liked her, I liked her style and commitment to her job, but there was just something holding me back. It felt a little rushed (I know it’s a short story)… And the ending ….. it was a little close for comfort.

Of all the people Danny had thought he might run into, he’d never in a million years expected to see Skylar Long again. If he believed in destiny, he’d almost accept that his thinking of her earlier had brought her straight to him.
One of the things he remembered about her was how she’d wanted to get out of their town and move to a big city. Her sights had been set on Houston or even Dallas. She had wanted to get lost in all the people.
Many of his classmates had spoken about leaving their little town, but few did. And many who left eventually returned. Not Skylar. She’d gotten out, and he’d figured she would stay gone forever. After all, her parents had moved about ten years ago, which meant there was no reason for her to return.
Yet, here she was. And more stunning than ever.
She had been Danny’s crush from the time they were in grade school. Skylar had always been a free spirit. She had confidence that most girls her age lacked. It wasn’t arrogance, simply a belief in herself that came through in everything she did.
While beautiful, she had been a little reserved. She had run with the popular crowd, but she didn’t wield that social level to degrade anyone or use it to her benefit like others had. She had been kind, and she wore her heart on her sleeve.
He and Skylar had been able to talk about anything. She was always open and engaging, but Danny had never pursued her as his girlfriend. He’d never thought he was good enough for her, not when so many of his other friends had wooed her.
Danny looked at her. The harsh light of the streetlamp above them couldn’t diminish her beauty. Her golden blond hair was pulled up haphazardly with strands falling around her face and neck. But her large, azure eyes still held more shock and fear than he liked.
She was on the petite side with curves in all the right places. Her lips were full, pouty even, and they made his blood heat just looking at them. Her skin had the dewy glow of a healthy lifestyle that made him want to reach out and run the pads of his fingers down her cheek to see if her skin was as velvety as it appeared.
Hearing her story earlier made him want to go find Matt and punch him a few times. Danny had never been so happy to be in the right place at the right time. He gave himself an inward shake to get back to the matter at hand. “And what happened tonight?” Danny asked to get the final piece of the puzzle.
Skylar shrugged. “It was Matt’s night out with friends. I made sure to keep to my same schedule, not doing anything that would alert him that I planned to leave. I waited an hour after he left before I grabbed an overnight bag and threw a few things in. I just wanted to get out. I didn’t care about the rest of my stuff. I figured I could get it back later or replace it.”
“It was a good decision. Things can be replaced. Your life can’t. So, how did he figure out that you left?”
“I honestly don’t know.” Concern clouded her face. “He was gone, I know it. I even drove by the bar to make sure his car was there. Then I headed straight out of town.”
This wasn’t the first time Danny had dealt with a domestic situation like this, but he didn’t like that he knew one of the parties involved. Mainly because he knew the odds of how such circumstances turned out.
Danny ran a hand down his face, his gut churning. “If he was gone from the house and at the bar, then he had to know you left somehow. Are there cameras in the residence?”
Her eyes widened, and her lips parted in shock. “I . . . I don’t know. There could be. It sounds like something he’d do. He was adamant about me moving into his place. It was bigger than mine, even though mine was in a better location, so I agreed.”
“What about tracking your car?”
She shook her head and shrugged her shoulders at the same time. “I wouldn’t put anything past him.”
“Does he always know what’s going on in your life?
People you’ve talked to, places you’ve been?” “Yes.”
“What about phone calls and texts? Does he ask you specifics about them?”
She frowned as she thought about his question. “He used to, but not anymore.”
Danny figured as much.
Skylar’s gaze sharpened on him. “Why? Do you think he installed some kind of spyware on my phone? Oh, God. He installed spyware on my phone.”
“We’ll get you a new one, and I’ll have my guys look over your car to see if there’s any kind of device.”
Her eyes filled with tears that she hastily blinked away. “How did I get into such a situation?”
“It doesn’t matter. What counts is that you’re getting out of it. If that’s what you want.”
Her head bobbed up and down rapidly. “Yes. I knew I was getting away from him tonight, one way or another.”
Danny recalled that she had said she had a handgun in her car. Not that he could blame her for having it, but he was happy she hadn’t had to use it. “I’m glad you pulled in here.”
“I wasn’t going to. As soon as I thought the headlights were from a car like his, I thought it was just my imagination, that I was just scared and seeing things. Then something told me to pull in here and see if the vehicle followed. As soon as it did, I knew it was Matt. Why were you here?”
Danny lifted one shoulder and twisted his lips. “Eating dinner.”
She blinked and looked around. “At a rest stop?” “Yeah. Where were you headed?” he asked to change the subject. He didn’t want to discuss his lack of a life, not when her situation was more important.
Skylar blew out a breath. “I don’t know. I just got on the road and drove. I didn’t even realize I was here until I saw the county sign five miles back.”
“Is there anyone in town you can stay with?”
Her gaze dropped to the ground. “I didn’t keep up with anyone here. I can stay at a hotel.”
“That’s the first place Matt will look for you when he gets out of jail. I could post a deputy to keep watch, but that’s a temporary fix.”
“I understand.” Her gaze lifted to his, and she forced a smile that didn’t reach her blue eyes. “You’ve been a great help tonight, but you’ve done enough. I’ll figure something out.”
Danny took a step toward her. “If you think I’m going to walk away, then you don’t remember me at all.”
“Oh, I remember you,” she said. This time, the smile was the one he remembered from years earlier.
“Then let me help.”
Worry crossed her face once more. “Matt is the kind that won’t give up, isn’t he?”
“Let’s just say that I don’t want to take any chances with him. I know the perfect place you can stay. It’s a fortress unto itself. There’s no way Matt can get anywhere near you there.”
“Really?”
“Really.”
Her relief was so great that her shoulders drooped with it. “I can follow you there.”
“Your car is staying here. I’ll have it towed to the station to be looked over. Get whatever you need. I’ll drive you.”

Night’s Kiss by Mary Hughes – a Review

Night’s Kiss by Mary Hughes – a Review

Amazon / B&N / Kobo / BAM / Book Depository / Google Play / Apple

Description:
As a human who hunts vampires, I risk death each night I take to the streets. Bloodsuckers are stupidly fast. I have only my wits, my practice, and my weapons.

Oh yeah, and my rage.

Vampires killed my parents before my eyes when I was young. My revenge? I’ll destroy every last one of the evil bastards, starting with their king.

But only one man can help me locate the king. Achingly tall, dark, and too-sexy-for-his-own-good, Ryker is gorgeous enough to be the vamp king himself. But the devilish arch to his black eyebrow, his white, unfangy grin, and rocking the daytime are good clues that he’s human.

We’ll have to work together as uneasy allies if I hope to get my final revenge on the king—only now it seems evil monsters are also after our prey, and they’ll stop at nothing to see us all dead. And why are they having so much trouble finding the king?

Review;

I really enjoyed Night’s Kiss by Mary Hughes.  I found it to have a solid plot-line with well developed character development, not only of the main couple, but the secondary characters as well.  Everything just seemed to fit together and flow from one page to the next.  Yes we focus mainly on Kat and Ryker throughout the story as it’s about their adventure and path to each other, but the secondary characters play a major role in that path they are on, and they aid their story along.  The whole pretense of a vampire and vampire hunter being attracted to each other only to find out they are mates makes for a fun read.

Both Kat and Ryker are fun characters that you can’t help but like.  For an ancient being Ryker is pretty much like a teenage boy around Kat, he just can’t figure out what it is about her that makes him want to work with her to find the Vampire King, who happens to be Ryker’s best bud since forever.  However, for the majority of the story poor feisty, warrior woman, hear me roar Kat doesn’t know Ryker is a vampire because he portrays himself as a human PI, that is, when he’s not shapeshifting into the disguise of police officer Keydew.  Speaking of this other persona he likes to change into I couldn’t help but think of Deputy Sherriff Barney Fife from The Andy Griffith show, LOL!!  The way he played the part of officer Keydew to everyone was comical at times for me but I loved it, it added another dimension to Ryker’s character and personality.  Can you tell I really liked Ryker’s character??? 😉  As much as I liked our resident vampire, I have to say I thought Kat’s character was great.  She’s such a strong female lead you can’t help but appreciate all she’s been through in her life, along with her sister. I really liked the sisterly dynamics between them and enjoyed learning about their life and just who Kat really is.  Finding out she’s the product of the very thing she’s been hunting all her life throws her for a loop.  Yes, Kat’s parents are human and vampire, her father is the vampire.  However, with the help of her sisters, both adopted and biological she comes to accept her birth parents, which in the end leads her to be able to accept that Ryker had lied about being human and is in fact a vampire, and that she had come to love him.  Once the truth came out and they admitted they had feelings for each other things got even more fun between them, but in the end they do wind up with their HEA, but not without more drama and danger for these too.

I really enjoyed Night’s Kiss, and feel that Miss Hughes has another successful story on her hands. It’s fun, adventurous, with 2 strong leads for the main couple, with  just the right amount of mystery and danger tossed in for good measure to keep things entertaining.  For anyone who loves a good vampire read, then this one is a must.

Until next time, happy reading everyone.

Rogue’s Holiday (Agents of the Crown #5) by Regan Walker-a review

Rogue’s Holiday (Agents of the Crown #5) by Regan Walker-a review

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Amazon.uk / Amazon.au / B&N/

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date November 7, 2019

Even a spy needs a holiday…

Robert Powell’s work as a spy saves the Cabinet ministers from a gruesome death and wins him accolades from George IV. As a reward, the king grants him a baronetcy and a much-deserved holiday at the Royal Pavilion in Brighton where he thinks to indulge in brandy, cards, good horseflesh and women.

But when Muriel, Dowager Countess of Claremont, learns of Sir Robert’s intended destination, she begs a favor…to watch over an “errant child” who is the grandniece of her good friend living in the resort town. Little does Robbie know that Miss Chastity Reynolds is no child but a beautiful hoyden who is seemingly immune to his charms.

Chastity lives in the shadow of her mother and sisters, dark-haired beauties men admire. Her first Season was a failure but, as she will soon come into a family legacy, she has no need to wed. When she first encounters Sir Robert, she dubs him The Rogue, certain he indulges in a profligate lifestyle she wants no part in.

In Brighton, Robbie discovers he is being followed by friends of the conspirators who had planned to murder the Cabinet. Worse, they know the location of Chastity’s residence.

••••••

REVIEW:Rogue’s Holiday begins with Robbie Powell spying on behalf of the Crown. Once his mission is complete and the traitorous men are apprehended, a more than thankful King George IV bestows on him the title of baronet making him Sir Robert Powell. The King also offers up his Royal Pavilion in Brighton so that he may vacation for the summer. Robbie gladly accepts and invites his uncle, Jack Donet to accompany him. Before Robbie leaves, Muriel, the Dowager Countess of Claremont, asks a favor of him. Her dear friend’s grandniece, who is also a bit of a hoyden, will be in Brighton as well and needs watching over.

Chastity Reynolds feels like she doesn’t feel like she fits in with her family, except for her shoe designing father. She, too, likes to design shoes and is close to her father. Her sister’s wedding planning is the last thing she wants to deal with. Her mother is aware of Chastity’s nature, and suggests that she and her best friend, Rose, go to Brighton to stay with her Aunt Agatha in Brighton. Chastity jumps at the chance. On their trip to Brighton, Chastity goes downstairs at a hotel they’re staying at, only to run (literally) into a good-looking man who doesn’t apologize for the collision. Instead, he places a kiss upon her lips that leaves her reeling. She is not only offended, but also intrigued as the rogue saunters away.

Once Robbie arrives in Brighton, he and Jack meet Chastity and Rose. To say they are all a bit taken with each other would be true, but Chastity is still offended by Robbie’s roguish behavior. However, Robbie makes it his mission to win Chastity over. Unfortunately, Robbie senses that he’s being followed and when he receives a threatening letter from an anonymous source, he and Jack have to step up in order to keep not only themselves safe, but Chastity as well.

Rogue’s Holiday is a wonderfully written addition to the Agents of the Crown series. Chastity has an independent streak, but that doesn’t keep her from wanting to do the right thing. Robbie has intrigued me since the first time I read about him. His family is one of my favorites in all of the fiction I’ve ever read. As always, Regan Walker’s effortless weaving of historical facts into her stories leaves me in awe. The world that she creates pulls you in from the very beginning and always leaves you wanting more. The secondary characters are always well written and pertinent to the story. If you’re a fan of Regency Romance with great character and world building, you’ll never go wrong with one of Regan’s stories. Well done, Regan Walker!! Very, very well done!

••••••••••

REVIEW: Forever and a Duke is a novel in the Rogues to Riches series. It can be read as a stand alone but is best read as part of the series for the full impact of the characters already created.

This is the story of Eleanora Hatfield and Wrexham “Rex”, Duke of Elsmore. If you are familiar with this series, many of the characters will be familiar. If you are new to this series, there is enough backstory to explain the circumstances. I don’t do spoilers. I really want people to enjoy the experiences for themselves. What I can do is tell you the setup for the story and why I enjoyed it.

The Duke of Elsmore is a recently titled man, raised apart from the previous Duke of Elsmore, he’s becoming familiar with his properties, which are extensive and spread widely location wise. He’s inundated with many aunties, uncles, cousins, and sisters and an extremely busy mother. He has learned much about being the Duke, but the enormity of his estate has made him dependent on relatives and others to see to the day-to-day activity and bookkeeping. However, as his sisters approach the season for marriage and it looks like they will find matches, he becomes aware that many of his books are not in order and indeed he is losing a great deal of money.

To prevent his bank from issues and his troubles from becoming public knowledge and collapsing the bank he’s so heavily invested in, he consults his friend Quinn Wentworth, Duke of Walden and owner of a competitive bank. Quinn has often mentioned an employee of his, Mrs. Eleanora Hatfield who is a marvel with figures and straightening out bookkeeping. Rex confides in his friend about his finding in the books of his households and bank and asks Quinn if he can temporarily employ Mrs. Hatfield to help him fix his situation.

Getting Eleanora to agree is a bit more difficult. She’s very set in her comfy and predictable world of keeping the books for Quinn and his interests. She’s reluctant to take this on. She doesn’t have a love for Dukes of any place, her exception of Quinn has much to do with his Duchess Jane.

Okay, that’s the setup! Now what I can tell you is that the way this all comes about is fascinating. Oh…I guess I do need to do one little spoiler…there is no Mr. Hatfield and Eleanora is not married. What she finds out about Rex upsets her vision of what most dukes are really like. She’s feisty and honest and he loves it. He’s humble and caring (for a Duke) and she loves it.

Grace Burrowes has done a terrific job of setting these two together. So close, yet so far apart. Meant for each other, but can or will they fight to be together despite all the issues? Grab a copy and find out! I loved reading this witty and sweet story.

Review:

Wolf Rebel by Paige Tyler is the 10th book in her wonderful SWAT: Special Wolf Alpha Team series. As noted in previous reviews for this series, I love how Tyler always gives us wonderful, romance suspense stories, that are exciting, pulse pounding action filled, as well as great couples and hot alpha men that are part of the SWAT team.

Rachel Bennett, our heroine, is a former cop turned werewolf, and is a member of the Special Wolf Alpha team.  Rachel suffers terrible nightmares (PTSD) from when she was seriously injured as a cop fighting off a deranged clown in Tennessee, which also caused her to become a werewolf.  The nightmares have begun to surface again, causing Rachel to be sleep deprived.   She is one of the Swat members assigned to protect an Assistant District attorney and family during a trial, which has caused a number of threats against the attorney.

Knox Lawson, our hero, is a former Navy seal, who is now working for a security firm.  Knox was part of a group of hunters that went after werewolves, until he quit when he realized that they were bad people; which he also got shot defending one the Swat team members, who was under attack.  The person he took the shot saving the swat member was Rachel.  In a short time, the injury will cause Knox to begin to display werewolf tendencies, and he goes to Rachel to get help learning how to deal with his new ability.  At first Rachel wants no part of him, but realizes he saved her life, and was not part of the hunter group, instead working with a security firm, also protecting the attorney. Knox was drawn to Rachel, especially after hearing her screaming during one of her nightmares, and slowly they both realize that they are “the One” for each other.  Both have their own issues; Knox with controlling his temper and his wolf and Rachel finding a way to get past her nightmares that have become very real.

Tyler continues to change the game a bit in this story; besides werewolves, and vampires, Wolf Rebel brings us an evil creepy entity in the form of the clown that Rachel sees, and is more than a nightmare.  This was a haunting new horror aspect, with the entity being able to switch to other bodies, and not only traumatizing Rachel, Knox, Diego, and but me too.  Lol

What follows is an exciting, intense, action-packed adventure that will keep us glued to our seats, especially when this entity becomes very real.  The last 1/3 of the book was a wild exciting race to save the attorney, as well as their own lives.  The defendant in the trial, who was very powerful was hell bent on murdering the attorney, causing so many dangerous situations for all,; there was a surprising twist, as well as the part with Rachel and the entity also had us holding our breaths.

Paige Tyler does it again with another intense, intriguing, exciting and sexy story. I loved Rachel and Knox together, and got a kick out of Rachel and some of her teammates finding a way for Knox to stay with them.  Wolf Rebel is another fabulous addition to this series.  If you have not started this series, I suggest you do so, as it is a fun, exciting and sexy read and Paige Tyler is an author you need to be reading.

Genre: adult, contemporary, paranormal

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / B&N / KOBO / Chapters Indigo / Google Play

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date November 26, 2019

#1 New York Times bestselling author J.R. Ward is heating things up this winter with a holiday novel featuring some of her most iconic Black Dagger Brothers.

When Trez lost his beloved to a tragic death (The Shadows, Black Dagger Brotherhood #13), his soul was crushed and his destiny seemed relegated to suffering. But when he meets a mysterious female, he becomes convinced his true love has been reincarnated. Is he right? Or has his grief created a disastrous delusion?

Therese has come to Caldwell to escape a rift with her bloodline. The revelation that she was adopted and not born into her family shakes the foundations of her identity, and she is determined to make it on her own. Her attraction to Trez is not what she’s looking for, except the sexy Shadow proves to be undeniable.

Has fate provided a grieving widower with a second chance…or is Trez too blinded by the past to see the present for what it really is? In this sensual, arresting book full of the themes of redemption and self-discovery, two lost souls find themselves at a crossroads where the heart is the only compass that can be trusted…but that may require a courage that neither of them possesses.

•••••••••

REVIEW:WHERE WINTER FINDS YOU is the 17.5 instalment in J.R. Ward’s contemporary, adult BLACK DAGGER BROTHERHOOD paranormal, romance series. This is Shadow Trez Latimer, and Therese’s story line. WHERE WINTER FINDS YOU can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty but I recommend reading THE SHADOWS book 13 for Trez’s backstory and history.

WARNING: If you have not read book 13 THE SHADOWS, there may be some spoilers in my review.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Trez and Therese) WHERE WINTER FINDS YOU follows Shadow Trez Latimer as he struggles to go forward without the woman he loves. Months earlier Trez’s ‘shellan’ (mate) Selena, one of the Chosen, succumbed to a rare disease of her kind, known as the Arrest. Fast forward to present day wherein, with the approach of the Christian human holiday Christmas, Trez battles not to join his shellan in the fade but if not for a female vampire called Therese, whose likeness to Selena gave Trez, and everyone pause. What ensues is the building relationship between Therese and Trez, and the potential fall-out as Trez continues to struggle with the loss of Selena.

Therese, a female vampire, struggles with her past. Discovering she was adopted, Therese felt compelled to come to Caldwell, New York, in an effort to move on with her life, such as it is. Everyone she meets is shocked at her appearance, and if not for Trez Latimer, Therese would not be alive today. Trez Latimer, one of the rare Shadow vampires, finds himself battling between head and heart as it pertains to the woman that looks identical to his beloved shellan. With his brother iAm warning him about the potential for another heart break, Trez begins a slow seduction of our story line heroine, a seduction that brings with it too many memories of the past.

The relationship between Trez and Therese is one of instant attraction but Therese is unaware of her uncanny likeness to Trez’ former shellan. Nights of dreaming about her mysterious shadow man finds Therese realizing that perhaps, her dreams are more memories than anything else. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

The colorful secondary and supporting characters include Trez’ brother iAm, as well was iAm’s shellan; symphaths Rehvenge and Zhex; as well as several members of the BDB; Bitty, Fritz; Therese’ parents Larisse and Rosengareth, and her brother Gareth; and of course, the ever present Lassiter; and Therese’s co-workers Emile and Liza.

WHERE WINTER FINDS YOU is a story of family, heartache, grief and loss; struggle, depression, second chances and hope; a story of love transcending pain and loss, sadness and time. The premise is engaging and emotional; the characters are numerous, colorful and energetic; the romance is seductive and captivating- wrap yourself up in a cozy blanket for a long winter’s night.

THE SAVIOR
(Black Dagger Brotherhood #17)
by J.R. Ward
Genre: adult, contemporary, paranormal, romance

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / B&N / KOBO / Chapters Indigo / Google Play

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date April 2, 2019

In the venerable history of the Black Dagger Brotherhood, only one male has ever been expelled—but Murhder’s insanity gave the Brothers no choice. Haunted by visions of a female he could not save, he nonetheless returns to Caldwell on a mission to right the wrong that ruined him. However, he is not prepared for what he must face in his quest for redemption.

Dr. Sarah Watkins, researcher at a biomedical firm, is struggling with the loss of her fellow scientist fiancé. When the FBI starts asking about his death, she questions what really happened and soon learns the terrible truth: Her firm is conducting inhumane experiments in secret and the man she thought she knew and loved was involved in the torture.

As Murhder and Sarah’s destinies become irrevocably entwined, desire ignites between them. But can they forge a future that spans the divide separating the two species? And as a new foe emerges in the war against the vampires, will Murhder return to his Brothers… or resume his lonely existence forevermore?

•••••••••••

REVIEW: THE SAVIOR is the seventeenth full-length instalment in JR Ward’s contemporary, adult BLACK DAGGER BROTHERHOOD paranormal, romance series focusing on an elite group of vampire warriors known as the Black Dagger Brotherhood. This is Murhder, son of Murhder, and Dr. Sarah Watkins’ story line. THE SAVIOR can be read as a stand alone but for backstory and history, I recommend reading the series in order.

Told from several third person perspectives including Murhder and Sarah THE SAVIOR follows human molecular geneticist Dr. Sarah Watkins’ in the aftermath of discovering the people she works for at BioMed Research have been conducting illegal, immoral and unethical experiments. With the FBI questioning the death of her fiance, Sarah will begin an investigation of her own only to discover not all is right at BioMed Research. Attempting to rescue, what she believes, is a young boy, Sarah will come face to face with her future. Enter vampire warrior Murhder, and the male with whom Sarah will fall in love. What ensues is the building relationship and romance between Murhder and Sarah, and the potential fall-out as Murhder’s past, and his strained relationship with the Black Dagger Brotherhood, force Sarah out of Murhder’s life, and Murhder away from the only ‘brothers’ he has ever loved.

Murhder’s story has been building throughout the series. The reader was first introduced to Murhder as part of Xhex’s past. Believing he had gone insane, Murhder was kicked out of the Black Dagger Brotherhood, only to return twenty years later, desperate to locate a female he failed to save years before. But be aware, if you are looking for a ‘big bad’ you won’t find it in The Savior-our hero is a savior-an avenger-a male of worth.

Meanwhile, John Matthew and Xhex’s relationship is strained with the arrival of Xhex’s former lover Murhder. Believing he has lost his shellan to her former love, John Matthew goes rogue risking not only his life when he tangles with one of Throe’s shadows, but any chance for Murhder to return to the Brotherhood. Speaking of the ‘shadows’, Throe’s dabble into the ‘black arts’ threatens the BDB when they are unable to destroy that which they do not understand.

There is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters including all of the previous story line couples, their growing families, Fritz, Havers, Rehvenge, Lassiter, and newly transitioned vampire Nate.

THE SAVIOR is a story of betrayal, revenge, acceptance and love. We are witness to the backstory that pushed our hero into a murderous rage, and the resulting expulsion from the Brotherhood he desperately loved. The premise is engaging and captivating;the characters are numerous, energetic and determined-another vampire will be accepted into the Brotherhood; the attraction between Murhder and Sarah is immediate; our heroine is quick to accept the existence of vampires; the romance is passionate and heart breaking.

“Holy f–k,” Trez yelled as a semitrailer truck the size of a building went blasting past the front bumper of his brand-new BMW.
Like right past. Like . . . nearly peeling off the hood of the damned car.
As his four-wheel drive, heavily treaded snow tires abruptly grabbed at that which they had been spinning on, and a pedestrian who’d slipped suddenly righted himself out of the way of the truck, Trez decided that the definition of in-the-nick-of time was exactly what just happened. If he’d been able to go when the light had turned, if that pedestrian hadn’t caught himself just when he had, they would both have been filing their termination papers tonight.
Because about a split second prior to the almost catastrophe going down, Trez had been debating whether or not to just drive on. And not merely through the intersection.
Having spent two decades in Caldwell, watching with his Shadow eyes the way a couple generations of humans built up the city, he knew exactly where this particular street in this particular section of town ended up.
At the Hudson River.
So if he hit the gas and kept on a direct, no wavering course until the street ended, he could take a Fast & Furious jump off the concrete embankment under one of Caldie’s two bridges. The BMW would not last long in the free fall, the sleek car having been built to fly over asphalt, not literally fly, and soon enough, both he and all this expensive steel, leather, and plastic would be sinking beneath the cold, sluggish waters of the Hudson.
As his eyes had flashed peridot, his brain had imagined what it would be like. At first, the water would infiltrate through seams and vents, a trickle, not a rush. But that would change as he used the last of the electrical system’s power to lower the windows. After that, he would sit and wait for his drowning to take place, probably with his hands still on the wheel, maybe not, his seat belt remaining pulled across his chest, his clothes dampening and then clinging to his warm body with the clammy touch of the corpse he would soon become.
He would not struggle. He would keep his eyes open. He imagined himself feeling a calmness that had been missing since all the light in his world went out in that hospital room about twenty miles, and some distance underground, away from where he himself would die. He would be so relieved. Even as the water reached his throat, then proceeded over his mouth and into his nose and ears, even as his body temperature tried to rally against the icy submersion and failed to conserve any warmth, even as his air supply dwindled to that which was in his lungs and no more, he would be at peace.
The death throes, when they came—and they would, for his body was, as all were, evolutionarily adapted for survival, the conscious mind in charge only up to a dire point, whereupon autonomic function took over and things went haywire—would thrash him about in the bucket seat, throwing his head forward and back, his mouth opening and drawing in water as a reflex, as a desperate hope that his lungs were merely being denied oxygen as opposed to there being none available to them. He was under no illusions that it would be easy. There would be suffering from the suffocation, burning inside his body, perhaps even some last-moment panic kicked over his mortal transom by the lizard part of his brain.
But then it would be over. Done with. The whole miserable biological accident of his life dusted, in the bin, over and out.
A void, and nothing more.
Which was heretical.
As a Shadow, he had been raised in a slightly different belief system than regular vampires. His people, an evolutionary extension within the fanged species, relied a great deal on the stars in the sky, the traditions of the s’Hisbe a variant of what was accepted as the way the afterlife worked. The core tenets, however, were the same for both. It was like Protestants and Catholics—same essential language, but different dialects—and as such, his kind, too, had the theory that after you died, you went up unto the Fade, and lived out eternity with your loved ones under the benevolent auspices of the Scribe Virgin. Assuming you hadn’t been a total douche down on earth. If you had been an asshole, you were relegated to Dhunhd, also known as Hell, which was where the Omega and his minions hung out. Either way, your conduct over the course of your mortal nights determined your final zip code, and there was something after your last breath to look forward to—or dread—depending on your worthiness.
It was an okay theory, and a construct that he understood was, in its own fashion, to be found on the human side of things as well. Not the Fade or Dhunhd, perhaps, not the Scribe Virgin or the Omega, exactly, but rather other, similar belief systems that covered both how you treated yourself and others while you were mortal, and also considered what happened to you after your coil, so to speak, got popped. Islam, Judaism, Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, and countless other religions, they were all efforts to give more of a vista after death than just a coffin and a grave. Or a pyre.
He knew from pyres.
God, did he ever.
What he no longer knew from, however, what he no longer believed in, was all the rest of that stuff. He’d never been particularly spiritual, but man, you didn’t know how much you had been until you were not any longer.
At all.
Anyway, prior to the whole truck/intersection/ almost-obliteration thing, he had been considering what was not exactly a sin, but rather a really, very not-so-hot idea. Assuming you were a believer. In the lexicon of both vampires and Shadows, if you took your own life, that was it. No Fade for you, motherfucker. Now, no one had been able to provide him with a good explanation of what the alternative repercussions were—sure, lore had it you were closed-door’d on the whole Fade thing. But where did you end up? Dhunhd? Worm food? Who knew. Yet everyone and their uncle was damn clear on the fact that you weren’t going to be elbows deep in people you liked for the next jabillion years.
The message apparently being, if you took your own life, well, then, to hell with you if you didn’t appreciate the gift you were given at birth.
Yeah, like this whole breathing/heart-beating thing had been such a fucking prize, these years he’d been upright and walking around such a goddamn joy. He’d been destined for a loveless mating since the night he was born, been responsible for the senseless suffering of both his parents, watched a dear friend get tortured by a psychotic cunt for a good twenty years—that was fun—been a pimp, a drug dealer, and an enforcer.
Real partridge-in-a-pear-tree shit.
And then that heaping sundae of shit-chip ice cream—which he’d self-medicated with an outstanding sex addiction, thank you very much—had been cherry-topped by the granddaddy of all gutwrenchers.
He’d met the female of his dreams, fallen in love . . . and, after what felt like twenty minutes of happiness, had had to hold her hand as she died of a wasting disease right in front of him.
Honestly, he hadn’t just been born under a bad star; he’d been born under one that kicked him in the nuts so badly, he’d coughed them out in his hand.
So now he was here, in this BMW he’d just bought, on this snowy night, during the motherfucking human season of cocksucking joy, contemplating suicide—only to have the GODDAMN ACCIDENT THAT COULD HAVE MADE IT ALL COME OUT ALL RIGHT DENIED TO HIM BY A SET OF ALL-SEASON RADIALS THAT HAD WORKED JUST FINE AT EVERY OTHER FUCKING INTERSECTION HE’D EVER DRIVEN THROUGH.
Not to put too fine a point on things.
But FFS, he couldn’t even have a chance to get dead in such a way that he could both end this bullshit AND not run afoul of the maybe truth that suicide got you, literally, nowhere.
Not that he believed in the afterlife anymore anyway. No matter what he’d thought he’d seen after Selena had died.
Hell, if there was anything that the last three months had taught him, it was that death was a hard stop. Especially if you were the one left behind.
Well, Trez thought, as he sped along in the snow, at least there was still the embankment option.
There was that to look forward to.
