REVIEW:NEVER TRUST A ROCKSTAR is the first instalment in Sarah Darlington’s contemporary year, adult ROCKSTARS IN KILL DEVIL HILLS rock romance series focusing on the members of the rock band Sunset Revival. This is lead singer Caleb Mills, and waitress Emma Winchester’s story line.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Caleb and Emma) NEVER TRUST A ROCKSTAR follows the building relationship between Caleb Mills and Emma Winchester. Emma Winchester was obsessed with rockstar Ollie Mills, and was overwhelmed when she discovered that she had won a contest to meet Ollie Mills but Emma’s fantasies about Ollie came to a crashing halt when Ollie showed his true colors. Desperate to get away, Emma will find herself on the run with Caleb Mills, Ollie’s brother, and the man with whom Emma would fall in love. What ensues is the slow building romance and relationship between Emma and Caleb, and the potential fall-out as Caleb’s past comes looking for a second chance, and Emma refuses to stand in the way.

Emma Winchester’s obsession with Ollie Mills was borderline stalkerish and out of control but having met Caleb, Emma quickly lost her heart to a man she barely knows. Caleb despises his brother’s treatment of women, and our story line heroine, and is willing to step up and be the man Emma needs and wants, but there is someone else standing in the way, and Caleb refuses to cross the line.

The relationship between Caleb and Emma is one of immediate attraction but Emma’s personal life is slowly spiralling out of control. From her mother’s illness to the other man in her life, Emma struggles between head and heart knowing that not all is as it appears to be. The $ex scenes are passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

We are introduced to the members of Sunset Revival: Caleb’s brothers Ollie and Luke, as well as their cousin Dani; Emma’s mother Bonne, and her aunt Luce.

NEVER TRUST A ROCKSTAR is a story of family, friendships, struggle and love. The premise is heartbreaking, emotional and engaging; the romance is seductive; the characters are colorful, flirty, impassioned and fun. NEVER TRUST A ROCKSTAR is a wonderful introduction to Sarah Darlington’s Rockstars in Kill Devil Hills .

With his precocious daughter in tow, Ryan begins to fall for Hannah Bright, a woman who is hiding much more than Ryan could ever have imagined. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate, without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

There is a large ensemble cast of colorful secondary and supporting charavters including Ryan’s ten year old daughter Alexandra, and her mother Darcy, and her husband Casper: Hannah’s friend Molly; numerous townies, as well as the reintroduction of Jake Sharp and Cami Logan, and Jake and Ryan’s ‘boss’ Lucinda.

LEAVE ME BREATHLESS follows several paths including Ryan’s antagonistic relationship with his daughter’s mother. Darcy comes from wealthy breeding stock, and in this their daughter Alexandra is caught between two different worlds, miles apart. Hannah struggles with her past: the violence, the secrets and lies that threaten to destroy everything she has built but a past that refuses to accept the inevitable.

His pace doesn’t falter, and he enters the store, leaving the door open behind him. He grabs me with a gentle but possessive force, one hand on my nape, the other on my hip. And he looks me straight in the eye, breathes deeply.
Then he drops his mouth to mine and gives me the tenderest of kisses. No tongue. No moans. No movement anywhere, except for his lips gently traveling across mine. My useless hands remain by my sides. I forget my name, who I am. The world as I know it ceases to exist, and it is so welcomed. So . . . unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. It’s the smallest of gestures, yet it’s also colossal. Does Ryan know that? Does he realize what he’s doing? He’s making no attempt to deepen the kiss; his hands aren’t moving or exploring. He’s just dotting my lips with his, over and over, lazily and softly. It’s dizzying. And despite his apparent lack of desire to push it to the next level, there is passion pouring from him, the air surrounding us electric.
My mind blanks and I remain still in his hold, my eyes closed, my senses hijacked, as I savor the light pressure moving across my mouth. I can only ever remember my heart racing with fear and apprehension, yet since I’ve met Ryan it’s pounded with life and anticipation. Every near kiss we’ve had. Every moment of silence when we’re looking into each other’s eyes and the sexual tension between us ramps up another level.
Every time we’re in physical contact.
Every reason to avoid him is suddenly negated by my hunger for him. And then he breaks our kiss, breathing shallowly, as he keeps me in his hold. I stare at him, lost for words, and he drops one final, lingering peck on the corner of my mouth before he moves back. I quickly feel so very lost. His fingertip draws a delicate line down the bridge of my nose, slowing when he passes over the small bump. Then he turns on an inhale and leaves, pulling the door closed behind him. And I stare forward at nothing for a long time. I’ve been kissed into a trance. I move across my store to sit in the wicker chair in the corner, the pads of my fingers resting on my lips as I stare at the door. I hear his truck start. I hear it pull away. And then . . . silence.
He just kissed me, and then he just left. Seriously, what the fucking hell?
He said nothing.
But everything I needed to hear.
And now I’m left alone with just my screaming thoughts. Stay away from him. Run to him. I know what I want to do, but should I? Can I? I stand up and start to pace my shop, wringing my hands. I stop, feeling my lips, and then my nose. I look at the door. I hear his words.
I don’t ever want to scare you.
I’m not scared of him, not like that. I’m scared because he leaves me completely breathless

•••••••••

REVIEW:STEALING HER is the first instalment in Rachel Van Dyken’s contemporary, adult COVET romance series. This is personal trainer Bridge Anderson Tennyson, and Isobel Cunningham’s story line.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Bridge and Isobel) STEALING HER follows the building relationship, predicated upon a lie, between personal trainer Bridge Anderson Tennyson, and Isobel Cunningham. At the age of fifteen, twins Bridge and Julian Tennyson were separated as a result of their parent’s divorce. Bridge had always promised Julian he would protect his brother but years of separation meant the two had become strangers until the fateful day when Bridge would be pulled back into his brother’s world. Having lived with his ailing mother, Bridge watched from the sidelines as his brother Julian excelled in the business of high finance, a business that was destroying Julian and the woman with whom he was about to marry. Enter Isobel Cunningham, and the woman with whom Bridge would fall in love. What ensues is the growing relationship and love between Bridge and Isobel, and the potential fall-out when the truth is revealed.

Bridge Tennyson had no idea what was about to happen in his well-ordered world. Having been abandoned by his father when his parents separated, Bridge is now commanded to pretend to be his brother Julian, in an effort to save Tennyson Financial, and the father he never knew. But things don’t go according to plan when Bridge falls in love with his brother’s fiancé, a woman who has suffered heart break and pain in the wake of Julian’s cheating and scandals. Isobel Cunningham struggled with the ‘new’ Julian Tennyson following a miraculous recovery from a near fatal motor vehicle accident but it wasn’t only the physical recovery but the change in personality that triggered something deep within our story line heroine. Little by little Isobel began to suspect that all was not right with the man she once loved, a man who was already stealing her heart.

The relationship between Isobel and Bridge is based upon a lie. Bridge must pretend to be his brother in order to help his brother, and his mother and her astronomical medical bills, but Bridge never expected to fall in love. Guilt will not be enough to push Isobel out of his life, but Bridge will make reparations including serving up his father, on the proverbial platter, in an effort to take down the once powerful Edward Tennyson. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

We are introduced to Bridge’s twin brother Julian Tennyson, their father Edward Tennyson, and their mother, as well as Julian’s PA Kelsey.

STEALING HER is a story of family dysfunction, power and control; a story of heart break and loss; of secrets, lies, love and happily ever after. The premise is entertaining and energetic; the romance is captivating and emotional: the characters are colorful and dynamic but I struggled with the missing backstory following the parents’ separation and divorce- I wish we saw some of the struggle and fallout of separating the once loving and close brothers.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date November 5, 2019.

I’d never forgotten him—a man I’d yet to meet.

Griffin Quinn was my childhood pen pal, the British boy who couldn’t have been more different from me. Over the years, through hundreds of letters, we became best friends, sharing our deepest, darkest secrets and forming a connection I never thought could break.

Until one day it did.

Then, out of the blue, a new letter arrived. A scathing one—one with eight years of pent-up anger. I had no choice but to finally come clean as to why I stopped writing.

Griffin forgave me, and somehow we were able to rekindle our childhood connection. Only now we were adults, and that connection had grown to a spark. Our letters quickly went from fun to flirty to downright dirty, revealing our wildest fantasies. So it only made sense that we would take our relationship to the next level and see each other in person.

Only Griff didn’t want to meet. He asked that I trust him and said it was for the best. But I wanted more—more Griff, in the flesh—so I took a big chance and went looking for him. People have done crazier things for love.

But what I found could change everything.

From seven year old pen pals to lovers, Luca and Griffin have secrets that have yet to be revealed, secrets that may affect the future, going forward. Griffin accepts that Luca struggles with a paralyzing and emotional disorder but our hero never expected to be pushed out of her life. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

The secondary and supporting characters are limited as the story line focuses on our leading couple. We are introduced to Dr. Chester Maxwell, Luca’s friend, confident and counsellor, a man who takes Luca under his wing, allowing her to test her love for a man she barely knows.

A Christmas Gathering by Anne Perry – a Review

A Christmas Gathering by Anne Perry – a Review

Amazon / B&N / Kobo / BAM / Book Depository / Google Play / Apple

Description:
As beautiful as it may be, their friends’ country home is not where Lady Vespasia wishes to spend Christmas with her new husband, Victor Narraway. She’d rather pass a relaxing holiday at home with him–especially because Victor, former head of the London Special Branch, seems to be hiding some undercover dealings with the other guests who have gathered in the spacious home.

As tensions grow among the couples, the young and beautiful Iris Watson-Watt becomes the center of several men’s focus. Unbeknownst to Vespasia, Iris carries a message for Victor that may help unmask a British traitor. As Victor plots his moves, he is reminded of a similar case from twenty years before, when a young Frenchwoman also carried a clandestine message–one that resulted in her murder, still unsolved to this day. Victor has always been tormented by his failure to protect her–and now, with all eyes on Iris, Victor must act fast before history repeats itself.

With the joy of Christmas at risk of being forgotten and Vespasia feeling alone on this holiday meant to be shared with loved ones, Victor must ultimately learn to forgive himself.

Review:

A Christmas Gathering by Anne Perry is a mystery that takes place in the English country side. I have not read Perry’s other mystery series, but this reads very well as a standalone. The story revolves around an older married couple, Lady Vespasia and her husband, Lord Victor Narraway, who have been married for three years.   It is Christmas time, and Vespasia would love to stay home together and enjoy the holiday.  Victor is a retired head of London’s Special Branch, and when he accepts an invitation to spend Christmas at a long-time friend’s country estate, Vespasia suspects he has to do an undercover assignment.

Besides the host (Max and Lady Amelia Cavendish), there are three other couples in attendance.  As everyone gathers for the nightly meal, tensions arise, as the hostess shows her dislike for Vespasia by her sarcastic comments.

Vespasia is experienced and savvy in her older age, and reads people very well.  She discovers that Victor has to meet someone to pass over documents that might reveal a traitor.  What she also learns is that Victor had a similar case 20 years ago, when the woman he was supposed to protect was killed; which Victor has never forgotten what he terms was a failure. Victor will meet the woman, take the documents and when he returns to the estate, someone is shooting at him.  Victor does arrive safely, but finds out later that evening, the woman who gave him the documents was attacked, with her life hanging by a thread.   déjà vu?

What follows is an interesting mystery that will bring Vespasia to become more active to find the truth, and discover who indeed is the traitor and in doing so save Victor’s life.   Victor does put his life in danger when he knows the culprit wants more than those papers, as a long standing hatred will reveal why Victor is the real target.

I really enjoyed this story, and I thought Vespasia was an excellent heroine, who despite her older age (60’s) was a fabulous character and great detective. I have not read the previous Victorian mysteries by Perry, and had no problem reading this book.   A Christmas Gathering is set in Victorian England, and was very well written by Anne Perry.  If you enjoy historical London backgrounds and an excellent mystery, I suggest you read A Christmas Gathering.

With the help of their current read, a steamy Regency titled Courting the Countess, the guys coach Gavin on saving his marriage. But it’ll take a lot more than flowery words and grand gestures for this hapless Romeo to find his inner hero and win back the trust of his wife.

Review:

The Bromance Book Club by Lyssa Kay Adams is the first book in her Bromance Book Club series.   I was not sure what to expect, as this is the first time, I have read this author, and the idea of a romance book club for sports alpha men had me questioning whether I would like it.  I am happy to say I really did enjoy and get a kick out of this book.

Gavin Scott, our hero, is a famous baseball player, who finds his marriage falling apart, as his wife Thea kicks him out of the house and asks for a divorce.  Gavin begins to realize that he was unfair to Thea with his disturbing comments, and tries to make amends.  Thea Scott, our heroine, is determined to go through with the divorce, and has her sister come live with her to help care for her two daughters.  When Gavin tries to apologize, Thea ignores him and tells him that she is going through the divorce.

Gavin tells his baseball buddies about his crumbling marriage, and they insist he join them in a meeting that night.  What Gavin finds to his total surprise, as all the men at the meeting are part of a club that helps each other find ways to win back their disillusioned wives.  They are the Bromance Book club.  What do they read?  Historical romance novels.  ?  Each of the men give Gavin suggestions how to win back Thea, especially to read a novel that is similar to their own predicaments.  He must learn how to understand Thea better, and begin courting her again to win her over.

What follows is a fun heartwarming second chance romance, with a great couple, and two sweet kids.   It was a lot of fun watching these alpha baseball players give Gavin suggestions in flirting with his wife; at times it was downright hilarious.

Gavin and Thea did not have an easy road ahead, as they both made mistakes and needed to recognize it was not one person’s fault.  Gavin needed to get past his insecurity, and Thea had to get past her troubled childhood.  It was nice to see Gavin would do anything to win Thea back.  By the last half of the book, I found myself rooting hard for Thea to give in to her feelings and take Gavin back.  The Bromance Book Club was a fun story line, a sweet second chance romance, and a fantastic humorous group of alpha’s that had me laughing throughout.  Lyssa Kay Adams did a wonderful job writing this fun story, which you need to read.  I know I will be waiting for the next book in this series.   So much fun.

CHRISTMAS INN LOVE (Silver Bell Falls 5) by Samantha Chase-Review Tour

CHRISTMAS INN LOVE (Silver Bell Falls #5) by Samantha Chase-Review tour

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / B&N / KOBO / Chapters Indigo / Google Play /Apple /

ABOUT THE BOOK Release Date November 5, 2019

Running the family B&B has always been Cassidy Ryan’s dream. But first, she has to save it from neglect.

Closing the doors to the Silver Bell Inn for the holiday seasons seems like the perfect plan to give the B&B some much needed love and care. Or at least it would be if the inn didn’t need a lot more work than Cassidy can handle on her own. She needs help. But asking it is the last thing she wants to do.

Getting stuck in Silver Bell Falls was not part of Beckham Allen’s plans. Neither was this cross-country road trip, for that matter. He was supposed to be focusing on himself and on healing after the loss of his father. But nothing, not even his rescue dog Mazie, seems to be able to break him out of his funk.

Or so he thought until he met the sweet innkeeper who takes him in.

After an awkward start, Cassidy and Beckham discover the perks of being snowed in together. And with Christmas drawing closer, they find they may have just been given the greatest gift of all.

•••••••••

REVIEW: CHRISTMAS INN LOVE is the fifth instalment in Samantha Chase’s contemporary, adult SILVER BELL FALLS romance series focusing on the town and people of Silver Bell Falls, New York. This is B&B owner Cassidy Ryan, and former professional football player Beckham Allen’s story line. CHRISTMAS INN LOVE can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Cassidy and Beckham) CHRISTMAS INN LOVE follows the building relationship between B&B owner Cassidy Ryan, and former professional football player Beckham Allen. Days before Christmas Beckham Allen found himself snowbound in the small town of Silver Bell Falls, New York when his vehicle spun out of control injuring himself and his dog Mazie. With no available lodging Beckham is forced to take a room at the Silver Bell Inn B&B, where the proprietor struggles to accept Beckham at face value. Enter Cassidy Ryan, owner and manager of the B&B, and the woman with whom Beckham will fall in love. What ensues is the building but forbidden relationship between Beckham and Cassidy, and the potential fall-out as Beckham’s time in Silver Bell Falls comes to an end.

Cassidy Ryan is struggling to complete the renovations to the Silver Bell Inn. With no plans for the Christmas holidays, Cassidy sets her sights on Valentine’s Day hoping the Inn will be refurbished on time. Beckham Allen is bored out of his mind in Silver Bell Falls, and battles between head and heart when it comes to ‘aiding’ our heroine with her ongoing renovations but a call from a friend finds Beckham leaving town sooner than he had anticipated.

The relationship between Beckham and Cassidy is one of immediate attraction but Cassidy struggles in the face of renovation h*ll, and caught with the interruption of unexpected guests. Having bought the Inn from her newly retired parents, Cassidy found the upkeep and renovations to be more then she could afford especially for our heroine who struggles to be independent and on her own. The slow building romance is passionate but mostly implied.

There is a large ensemble case of colorful secondary and supporting characters with the small town mentality of in-your-face gossip and business including Bailey Walsh and Gavin Maguire (A Christmas Rescue #4).

Samantha ChaseNew York Times and USA Today Bestseller/contemporary romance writer Samantha Chase released her debut novel, Jordan’s Return, in November 2011. Although she waited until she was in her 40’s to publish for the first time, writing has been a lifelong passion. Her motivation to take that step was her students: teaching creative writing to elementary age students all the way up through high school and encouraging those students to follow their writing dreams gave Samantha the confidence to take that step as well.

When she’s not working on a new story, she spends her time reading contemporary romances, playing way too many games of Scrabble or Solitaire on Facebook and spending time with her husband of 25 years and their two sons in NorthCarolina.

Description:
Fourteen-year-old Ileth grew up in an orphanage, and thanks to her stutter was never thought to be destined for much beyond kitchen work and cleaning. But she’s dreamed of serving with the dragons ever since a childhood meeting with a glittering silver dragon and its female dragoneer. For years she waits, and as soon as she is old enough to join, Ileth runs away to become a novice dragoneer at the ancient human-dragon fortress of the Serpentine.

While most of her fellow apprentices are from rich and influential families, Ileth must fight for her place in the world, even if it includes a duel with her boss at the fish-gutting table. She’s then sent off to the dragon-dancers after a foolish kiss with a famously named boy and given charge of a sickly old dragon with a mysterious past. But she finds those trials were nothing when she has to take the place of a dead dragoneer and care for his imprisoned dragon in enemy lands. . . .

Review:

Novice Dragoneer by E.E. Knight is the first book in his Dragoneer Academy series. We meet our young 14 year old orphaned heroine, Ileth at the start, as she travels to Serpentine to fulfill her dream of becoming a dragoneer. Years before, Ileth met an apprentice to Dragons, as well as meeting a Dragon; since then that is all she dreams about.  But when she arrives at the gate, she is turned away as being late, but she persevered for days, before the ‘charge’ gives her a chance to become a novice.

Novice Dragoneer is an intriguing story that follows Ileth’s journey into this magical world of dragons. With most of the novices and apprentices coming from wealthy families, Ileth herself is from a poor village, orphaned and stutters; but it is wonderful to watch Ileth slowly learn to talk the dragon language and help the dragons. The majority of the story revolves around Vale and the Galantine Lands, with Ileth at center stage.  In Vale (Serpentine), Ileth is sent to become a dancer with a group of females that dance for the dragons, that help keep them calm and happy.  She is then assigned to an old Dragon, who is slowly dying; Ileth will learn the language and become close to that dragon until his death.  She is then sent with another experienced apprentice to the Galantine Lands to help an imprisoned older dragon, in exchange for allowing another apprentice who was sick go home. War is possibly on the horizon and Ileth is in danger of never going home to Vale.

Ileth was a wonderful heroine, always willing to go beyond, as well as being loyal and honor bound; she was someone we rooted for throughout.  It was great to follow her journey, whether it be in school, meeting new friends and especially working well with dragons, as well as getting to ride a dragon.   Knight created some very good secondary characters that we got to like, as well as some villians (including a dragon).

Novice Dragoneer was an excellent story line, with a wonderful heroine, very good secondary characters, dragons, exciting and some very good action.  I will add that some parts of the book had a bit too much detail or descriptions that slowed down the story a bit.  With that being said, I did enjoy the book and look forward to finding out where EE Knight is going to take us in this series.  If you enjoy fantasy, dragons, training, and a wonderful young heroine, I suggest you read this book.
