Road rash and Jack meets handcuffs and street smarts.

I am a wandering disaster.
A hedonist, a lover, a son, and a rebel.

I am an independent seeker.
An overachiever, a friend, a misfit, and a cop.

My name is Lissie.
I’m determined enough to find acceptance, but too stubborn to see all I need is my own.

REVIEW: EDGE OF DARKNESS is the second instalment in Freya Barker’s contemporary, adult ARROW’S EDGE MC erotic, MC, romance series focusing on the members of the Arrow’s Edge MC. This is forty-year old, MC member James ‘Yuma’ Wells, and thirty-seven year old, detective Elizabeth ‘Lissie’ Bucco’s story line. EDGE OF DARKNESS can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty but I recommend reading the series in order for back story and cohesion where Yuma’s story begins.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Yuma and Lissie) EDGE OF DARKNESS follows the building relationship between forty-year old, MC member James ‘Yuma’ Wells, and thirty-seven year old, detective Elizabeth ‘Lissie’ Bucco. Elizabeth Bucco is the newest member of the Durango.New Mexico Police Department but she is no newbie to the world of law enforcement but finds herself struggling with her place in the world when she was forced to resign from her last department. A new apartment with a landlord that draws her like a moth to a flame, Lissie jumps head first when several bodies are discovered buried at a local construction site. James Wells aka Yuma battles between head and heart knowing his new tenant is with the local police but our hero knows the Arrow’s Edge MC is more about looking after the most vulnerable than trampling on the wrong side of the law but Lissie’s latest assignment comes full circle affecting the Arrow’s Edge MC, and in this Yuma is about to discover he lost his heart to woman caught in the middle of the battle. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Yuma and Lissie, and the potential fall-out as secrets, loss, and a mutual struggle threaten their tentative hold on love.

James Wells aka Yuma is a recovering alcoholic and his day to day struggle is a battle between right and wrong but meeting his new tenant at the local AA meeting gives them both something in common, a commonality of which James was hoping to forget. Lissie Bucco’s latest assignment brings her face to face with the reality of life and death, but death has always forced Lissie to look away until a discovery brings the reality to her front door.

The relationship between James and Lissie is one of immediate attraction; a palpable sexual attraction wherein James is hoping to become a better man but the loss of someone close sends James spiralling pushing our heroine away at a time when he needs her the most. James is broken and damaged forty year old man, who is about to fall in love with a woman he believes he does not deserve. The $ex scenes are intimate, erotic and intense without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

There is a large colorful and energetic cast of secondary and supporting characters including Trunk Rae & Jaimie (Edge of Reason #1), Ouray and Luna, and their son Ahiga, MC members Wapi, Kaga, Tse; Yuma’s father Nosh; Lisa, and her foster kids Ezrah and Kiara; as well as several detectives and law enforcement at the DPD.

EDGE OF DARKNESS is a story of family and friendships; of betrayal and vengeance; of life, loss, relationships and love. The premise is engaging, gritty and real; the romance is seductive and emotional; the characters are captivating, sensitive and edgy. EDGE OF DARKNESS is a passionate and intense story

••••••••

REVIEW:WICKED EVER AFTER: One Mile and Brea is the second instalment is the second instalment in Shayla Black’s contemporary, adult WICKED AND DEVOTED erotic, romance merging of the Wicked Lovers, and Devoted Lovers series. WICKED EVER AFTER should not be read as a stand alone as it picks up immediately after the events of book one WICKED AS SIN. Wicked as Sin, and Wicked ever After run parallel to and cross over with the author’s Devoted to Pleasure (Devoted Lovers #1)

Told from dual third person perspectives (Pierce and Brea) WICKED EVER AFTER continues to follow the struggling relationship between US military sniper Pierce ’One-Mile’ Walker, and preacher’s daughter /hair stylist Brea Bell. Pierce Walker works for EM Security Management but struggles with an assignment that went all to h*ll. Desperate for vengeance, Pierce will leave a heart broken Brea behind when he goes in search of Montilla, the head of the Mexican Cartel and the man who destroyed his life but all is not well within EM Security Management when a mole is suspected among one of their own. Meanwhile Brea Bell battles between head and heart when more devastating revelations affecting her life threaten her relationship with her father, prompting the narrow-minded gossips of Sunset, Louisiana to continue to bury the knife, opening wounds and breaking her heart.

The relationship between Brea and Pierce struggles with secrets and lies, miscommunication, jealousy, vengeance, and time spent apart. Pierce has gone underground and rogue in the hopes of taking down the man who tortured and abused our story line hero, and in this Brea finds herself alone at a time when she needs Pierce Walker the most. Brea’s relationship with her father, and his strict religious beliefs take precedent as Brea struggles with the ramifications of her relationship with the man that she loves, a relationship she believes is now in the past. The $ex scenes are intimate and intense, without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text but I struggled with the ongoing separation between our leading couple as we were no longer up close and personal with their building relationship-in this, I felt disconnected from their growing romance.

There is a large ensemble cast of colorful secondary and supporting characters including Brea’s best friend and Pierce Walker’s nemesis Cutter Bryant (Devoted to Pleasure , Devoted Lovers #1), Brea’s father Preacher Bell, her fellow workers at the local salon, and several members of EM Security Management whom we previously met in both the Wicked Lovers, and Devoted Lovers series.

WICKED EVER AFTER is a story of heart break and betrayal; secrets and lies; friendship, family, hope and love. The premise is emotional and captivating; the characters are numerous, energetic, broken and wounded; the romance struggles in the face of preconceived notions, religious beliefs and time apart.

“I dreamed of this, too.” He swirled his tongue around her, shoving his fingers inside her, then nipped at her tender bud with his teeth. When her little yelp morphed into a moan, he gave her a dark smile. “I dreamed of making you take every dirty thing I’m desperate to give you.”
And then he stopped talking because he didn’t want another fucking thing to interfere with him consuming her. Sweet and tart and clean, everything about her flavor was so Brea. He wanted to bottle it. He wanted to bathe in it. He wanted it on his tongue always.
He wasn’t gentle and he wasn’t slow as he ramped her up until her cheeks turned red and her fingernails dug tiny pinpoints of pain into him. And still he didn’t let up, just kept devouring her until she squirmed and squealed and finally begged.
“Please, please, please…”
When he felt her clit pulse and she tugged on his hair, pulling him deeper into her pussy, she was finally aching the way he was. One-Mile jerked free from her hold and eclipsed her body with his as he aligned his crest at her opening.
He pushed his way deep with one savage thrust.
Brea’s eyes widened. She cried out and arched, need clearly surging—just like his. “Pierce!”
“Want me to fuck you?” he growled in her ear, filling her frantically, trying to get as close to her as possible.
“Yes.”
“Need me to fuck you?”
“Yes.”
“Ache for me to fuck you for the rest of your life?”
Her eyes met his, looking so molten and hot. “Yes.”
“Marry me.” It wasn’t a question.

From Blood and Ash by Jennifer L. Armentrout – a Review

From Blood and Ash by Jennifer L. Armentrout – a Review

Description:
A Maiden…

Chosen from birth to usher in a new era, Poppy’s life has never been her own. The life of the Maiden is solitary. Never to be touched. Never to be looked upon. Never to be spoken to. Never to experience pleasure. Waiting for the day of her Ascension, she would rather be with the guards, fighting back the evil that took her family, than preparing to be found worthy by the gods. But the choice has never been hers.

A Duty…

The entire kingdom’s future rests on Poppy’s shoulders, something she’s not even quite sure she wants for herself. Because a Maiden has a heart. And a soul. And longing. And when Hawke, a golden-eyed guard honor bound to ensure her Ascension, enters her life, destiny and duty become tangled with desire and need. He incites her anger, makes her question everything she believes in, and tempts her with the forbidden.

A Kingdom…

Forsaken by the gods and feared by mortals, a fallen kingdom is rising once more, determined to take back what they believe is theirs through violence and vengeance. And as the shadow of those cursed draws closer, the line between what is forbidden and what is right becomes blurred. Poppy is not only on the verge of losing her heart and being found unworthy by the gods, but also her life when every blood-soaked thread that holds her world together begins to unravel.

Review:

From Blood and Ash by Jennifer L. Armentrout is a fantastic fantasy novel, which is her first foray into High Fantasy. After finishing the book last night, I was thrilled, as I loved every moment of this story, and discovered that this is the beginning of a wonderful new series.

We meet our heroine, Penellaphe (Poppy), from the start, as she is secretly in a bar, hidden by a mask, to check out the men and women enjoying each other’s company. Poppy does not have a normal life, as she is the “Maiden”, who is the chosen one, as her destiny is to Ascend to her place with the gods.  She has a year before she ascends, and lives mostly in solitude, with only her guards and her maid.  Despite her circumstances, Poppy is a strong, smart, independent heroine, and has been secretly trained by her lead guard how to fight and defend herself if needed. When she is hiding in a room in the bar, she meets a handsome stranger, who will in time change everything about her life.

Hawke, our hero, becomes one of Poppy’s main guards, when one of them is killed in an attack by Descenters, who want to kill Poppy.  In a short time, Poppy will quickly realize that Hawke is the man she met at the bar.  Hawke was such an awesome character, whom you could not help fall in love with.  He was determined to win over Poppy, and nothing would stand in his way; even if he was very protective of her.  I loved Poppy and Hawke together, as the chemistry between them was sizzling.   Poppy tries very hard not to fall in love with Hawke, as he constantly teases and makes advances on her.  Wonderful couple, but do they really have a chance to be together?

Armentrout does an amazing job with this world-building, with gods, royalty, the mystery of ascension, as well as those the war against those they need to fight, such as Descenders, Atlantians, Cravens, Wolvens etc.  I do not want to tell too much more, as it would be spoilers, and this is too good to ruin it for you.

From Blood and Ash is an intriguing fantasy story, in a world filled with secrets, betrayals, suspense, action, mystery, passion and a wonderful cast of fantastic characters.  The last half of the book was mind-blowing, with tense violence, danger, constant action, heart wrenching and surprising twists.   In the forefront of this story is this wonderful romance between Poppy and Hawke; which will change everything about Poppy’s life as she learns the horrific truths along the way.  Who does she trust?

Bravo to Jennifer L. Armentrout, who has written such an amazing high fantasy, that kept me glued to my seat, unable to put the book down. From Blood and Ash was also a fun, enjoyable, as well as intense story line that had a bit of everything.  I am so happy to know that there will be another book, and possibly more in a series that is not to be missed.  I recommend you read From Blood and Ash, as I cannot wait for the next book.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date:

Patrick has awakened a fire I forgot existed.

Will this renewed desire warm my soul or consume my world?

Is it too late?

Will the life we yearn to have survive the ashes?

•••••••

REVIEW:ASHES is the third and final instalment in Aleatha Romig’s contemporary, adult WEB OF DESIRE erotic, dark, romantic suspense series focusing on billionaire Patrick Kelly, and Madeline Miller. ASHES and the Web of Desire series is set in the author’s Web of Sin, and Tangle Web worlds but you do not have to have read the previous series to follow or understand the current timeline. ASHES should not be read as a stand alone as it picks up immediately after the events and cliff hanger of book two FLAME.

WARNING: Due to the nature of the premise, and the story line content, there may be some triggers for more sensitive readers.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Maddie and Patrick) using present day and memories from the past, ASHES picks up immediately after the events of book two FLAME wherein our heroine is once again a ‘prisoner in a gilded cage’. With her daughter Ruby safe and in the custody of the Sparrow households, Maddie struggles with the revelation that her future is now in the hands of new owner who is driven to possess someone else. A rescue by the man that she loves sets a plan into motion to ravage all of the people involved in the past, present and potential future destruction of our story line heroine. What ensues is the continued rebuilding relationship between Maddie and Patrick, and the potential fall-out as Maddie is determined to face the men who destroyed her life.

ASHES is a story of secrets and revelations, and betrayal and vengeance, a vengeance meant to take down and punish the people who continue to buy and sell women like commodities. Targets are exterminated; lives are destroyed but is retribution ever going to be enough?

Aleatha Romig pulls the reader into a dark, gritty and intense story; an emotional and passionate conclusion to another powerful series by a fantastic author.

A Bad Day for Sunshine by Darynda Jones-dual review

A Bad Day for Sunshine (Sunshine Vicram #1) by Darynda Jones-dual review

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / B&N / KOBO / Chapters Indigo / Google Play

ABOUT THE BOOK:Release Date April 7, 2020

Sheriff Sunshine Vicram finds her cup o’ joe more than half full when the small village of Del Sol, New Mexico, becomes the center of national attention for a kidnapper on the loose.

Del Sol, New Mexico is known for three things: its fry-an-egg-on-the-cement summers, its strong cups of coffee—and a nationwide manhunt? Del Sol native Sunshine Vicram has returned to town as the elected sheriff–an election her adorably meddlesome parents entered her in–and she expects her biggest crime wave to involve an elderly flasher named Doug. But a teenage girl is missing, a kidnapper is on the loose, and all of it’s reminding Sunny why she left Del Sol in the first place. Add to that trouble at her daughter’s new school and a kidnapped prized rooster named Puff Daddy, and Sunshine has her hands full.

Enter sexy almost-old-flame Levi Ravinder and a hunky US Marshall, both elevens on a scale of one to blazing inferno, and the normally savvy sheriff is quickly in over her head. Now it’s up to Sunshine to juggle a few good hunky men, a not-so-nice kidnapping miscreant, and Doug the ever-pesky flasher. And they said coming home would be drama-free.

Sandy’s Review

A BAD DAY FOR SUNSHINE is the first instalment in Darynda Jones contemporary, adult SUNSHINE VICRAM mystery, suspense, somewhat humorous series focusing on Sheriff Sunshine Blaze Vicram and her daughter Aurora ‘Auri’.

Told from dual third person perspectives ( Sunshine and Auri) A BAD DAY FOR SUNSHINE follows Sunshine Blaze Vicram Freyr on her return to her home town of Del Sol, New Mexico following her questionable election win as the new sheriff. With her fourteen year old daughter Auri in tow, Sunshine’s return to Del Sol is met with derision, especially for Auri as she enters high school for the first time. A kidnapped teenager, a missing lieutenant, a decomposed body, an escaped fugitive, a flasher, a rooster named Puff Daddy, and demons from the past find Sunshine struggling within hours on her first day of the job, a job that will bring her up close and personal with Del Sol’s meanest, strangest and bad.

Sunshine Vicram has suffered like no one else, and with her return come the memories that are slowly revealing a forgotten connection to the town that almost destroyed her life. Our heroine, a passionate mother and daughter, finds herself facing down her demons when her daughter reveals a secret Sunshine had long thought buried.

A BAD DAY FOR SUNSHINE is reminiscent of Darynda Jones’ CHARLEY DAVIDSON series including an Easter egg or two referencing the aforementioned series. The premise is complex, detailed, gritty and real; the numerous characters are colorful, nosy, quirky and bad- the mean girls and bullies at the local high school are heart breaking and sad. We are introduced to Sunshine’s parents Cyrus and Elaine Freyr, her best friend and fellow law enforcement officer Chief Deputy Quincy Cooper; students Cruz De los Santos and his father Chris, Sybil St. Aubin and her parents Mari and Forest; the local ‘book babes’ who get together for drinking and gossip but every once in awhile, a basket of muffins foretells of darker things to come. The in-depth world building is full of possibilities. There is the hint of a romance for our leading heroine but life and past history may get in the way.

As per Darynda Jones’ style of writing, the humor is spot on. The back and forth between Sunshine and Auri is priceless, sassy and fun. Each chapter begins with a humorous window sign found at the local restaurants and shops. A BAD DAY FOR SUNSHINE is the perfect vehicle to add a little ‘sunshine’ and humor into your life.

Barb’s Review:
A Bad Day for Sunshine by Darynda Jones is the 1st book in her new Sunshine Vicram series.  I was excited to see what Darynda had in store for us in this new series, and I am happy to say I loved A Bad Day for Sunshine.

Sunshine (Sunny) Vicram, our heroine, returns to her home town of Del Sol, New Mexico, as the newly elected sheriff, which she suspects her parents meddled into getting her elected.  Sunny left town years before, at the age of 17; after she suffered a trauma, having been kidnapped and then pregnant, and now comes home as a seasoned successful career as a detective, with her 14 year old daughter, Auri.  Sunny is a tough, independent, smart, funny heroine, which you couldn’t help but love.  The relationship between Sunshine and Auri was wonderful, and I loved how close they were and their cute bantering back and forth throughout the book with each other, as we got to see the POV’s between them both.

The story begins with Sunshine’s first day on the job as Sheriff, with her expecting the basic misdemeanors of a small town; but immediately there is a kidnapping case of a 14 year old schoolgirl, who had also befriended her daughter.  Sunny’s best friend, Deputy Quincy Cooper, is thrilled to have his friend back, and together they work with Zee, another new member (sniper) of the police team to find the missing girl.  They made a great team, and I enjoyed their camaraderie.  I must say, I absolutely loved Levi, whom Sunny always had a crush on, but he comes from a violent dangerous family, that does include Hailey (who have become secret friends, but must keep their friendship private). Levi was not only a hunk, but he was also a great tracker, and ends up helping Sunny and her team.  You can tell he cares about her, as well as Auri, but tries to be distant, in order for them to be safe.

Auri also wants to help her mom find Sybil (the missing girl) and uses the internet, as well as school papers to find information; she shows her smarts, as she is her mother’s daughter as a budding detective.  School at first is difficult, with some mean girls at school treating her badly, especially since her mom is the sheriff.   Auri finds help and friendship from a boy, Cruz, who is considered the most popular boy in school, and their friendship helps her handle the brutal treatment from the girls.

What follows is an exciting adventure to find the missing girl, which will bring in some surprises along the way.  There is also a mystery about Sunny’s kidnapping, as she remembers very little of what happened, and is still determined to find out who the culprit was. I also loved how Levi was like a father figure Auri, having helped her when she was a child.

A Bad Day for Sunshine was not only an intense mystery, but was a lot of fun, as Sunny, Auri, Quincy, Zee, Cruz, and others were so great together, making us laugh quite a bit.   Darynda Jones once again gives us another fantastic heroine, with a wonderful daughter and great secondary characters.  I expect in future books we will see more romance, hopefully between Sunny and Levi.  I look forward to the next book in this series, as spending more time with Sheriff Sunshine Vicram is a must for me.  I suggest you jump on the bandwagon now, and start with A Bad Day for Sunshine by a fantastic author, Darynda Jones.

REVIEW:  The Epilogue by Michelle Heard is book five in the Trinity Academy Book series.
This was the perfect ending to the Trinity series. Each book in the series follows the lives of the Trinity Academy monarchs, Falcon Reyes, Mason Chargill and Lake Cutler. The Epilogue begins with Julian’s bachelor party. With our favorite men pulling the ultimate prank on him.

I absolutely love the interaction of the young men with their fathers.

With their lives now complete as each on follows their dreams and destinies with the love of their lives. We find some finishing school, some getting married and some having babies. This book wraps up everything that you wanted and needed to know as we follow each couple to their happily ever afters!

What is even more amazing about this series is – it can be read alone or with its cross over Enemies to Lovers book series. I love the cross over aspect as the two worlds combine and interact with each other.

While it is a short quick read it makes for wonderful reading. This book opens the amazing world that will continue with The Next Generation, with the children of the Trinity monarchy!

And I absolutely can not wait!

One Perfect Summer by Brenda Novak – a Review

One Perfect Summer by Brenda Novak – a Review

Amazon / B&N / Kobo / BAM / Book Depository / Google Play / Apple

Description:
When Serenity Alston swabbed her cheek for 23andMe, she joked about uncovering some dark ancestral scandal. The last thing she expected was to discover two half-sisters she never knew existed. Suddenly, everything about her loving family is drawn into question. And meeting these newfound sisters might be the only way to get answers.

While at Serenity’s family’s Lake Tahoe cabin, the three women begin digging into the mystery that has shaken their lives. With Reagan navigating romantic politics at her New York City advertising firm, Lorelei staring down the collapse of her marriage, and Serenity recovering from a messy divorce and traumatizing trial, all three women are converging at a crossroads in their lives. Before the summer is over, they’ll have to confront the paths they walked to get there and determine how to move forward when everything they previously thought to be true might be a lie. Thankfully, they’ll learn together that the future is easier to face with family by your side.

Review:

One Perfect Summer by Brenda Novak was an excellent read.   Three sisters that come together, and although they look alike, the differences become more obvious.

We start with Serenity (she was the one who started this all off) she’s a writer, she’s also just finished a messy divorce and a trial from hell.

Lorelei has enough on her plate, without coming out into the middle of nowhere, to meet her sister. She’s also on the brink of a divorce!! Her husband is having an affair with her best friend, and the other woman is pregnant!

Reagan, is dating a married man, it wasn’t meant to happen that way, but she fell in love….

Will the three women be able to become the sisters they all seem to need? Or will jealousy and outside forces pull them apart?

The meeting between the three women who are biological half sisters, is tense, how can it not be, they never knew each other existed. And who is their father? And how did they never know of each other?

One Perfect Summer was very well written by Novak.  I felt all the emotion that the sisters had felt. The backstory of each woman is crucial in learning about them. But did we really need the amount of information that was dumped on us about the brothers that lived next door? We need a little, but not as much as we got. (But I did wonder if they would get a book to tell us their stories.) And some of the other family members got page time, which sometimes took us away from the main story.

So what does the future hold for them? Will they find the truth in the past? Or will they be able to let go and forge a bond that will take them into the future.

And it brings to mind the debate on nurture versus nature, and the sisters definitely had different upbringings. And reading the interaction with Lorelei and her daughter was lovely. The interaction with Serenity and her parents was interesting.

Chasing Ginger by Marie Lavender – a Review

Amazon / B&N / Kobo / BAM / Book Depository / Apple

Description:
Chased by a group of angry men. Saved by quite a hunk.

This is not the résumé Ginger Halloway ever imagined having. But thanks to a miracle pill, which makes her size 22 body instantly sexy, that’s what happened.

Yet, now Lance Franklin is showing interest in her, and she can’t figure out if he really likes her for her, or if it’s just because of a bizarre drug.

And her wild bunch of friends, The Misfits…well, they’re always getting her into some interesting situations.

So, yep, business as usual. Except for the guy. What the hell should she do about him?

As for Lance, he believes he’s lucky to have found Ginger. But can he convince her they should go for it?

With some new attention from the hottest guy she’s ever met, Ginger can’t help but wonder…is this all too good to be true?

Review:

Reading the back cover of Chasing Ginger by Marie Lavender, I thought of Eddie Murphy in “The nutty Professor”

Ginger is a “full figured” feisty female. Her outlook on life ? She’s come to finally accept she won’t ever be a “conventional” size, that doesn’t mean she’s happy, but happy enough. So when she gets the chance at a “miracle” pill to help with her weight, Ginger signs up…..   But what she gets isn’t a slimming pill, it’s a pill that makes her a magnet for men!!

I laughed through most of the book. It’s hilarious, the dance competition was great, but the downside of this book was the fear she had when men wouldn’t take the hint and leave her alone!! But her guardian angel keeps stepping in to save her…..

I liked this story, very descriptive, really well written, it’s a struggle most women have at least once in their life, the struggle to keep the weight off, will they be attractive? Will anyone ever see past the “fat suit”?

Loved her college friends, they’d clubbed together and called themselves “The Misfits”, they were a great bunch of friends, always had Ginger’s back. She knew she could rely on them, and friends like that are hard to find.

So what happens with Lance and Ginger? Will she be able to tell him the pills are making him want her? Because he couldn’t want her, could he? And if Lance ever finds out that she’s taking pills, would he ever forgive her?

I’m hoping the misfits find their stories too.
