Description:
Caitlyn Sullivan, a daughter of Hollywood royalty, was already a star at ten, but still loved to play hide-and-seek with her cousins at the family home in Big Sur. It was during one of those games that she disappeared.

Despite her glamorous background, Cate was a shrewd, scrappy survivor, and she managed to escape her abductors. Dillon Cooper was shocked to find the bruised and terrified girl huddled in his ranch house kitchen—but when the teenager and his family heard her story they provided refuge and comfort, reuniting her with her loved ones.

Cate’s ordeal, though, was far from over. First came the discovery of a betrayal that would send someone she’d trusted to prison. Then there were years away in Ireland, sheltered and protected but with restlessness growing in her soul. Then, finally, she returned to Los Angeles, hoping to act again and get past the trauma that had derailed her life. What she didn’t yet know was that two seeds had been planted that long-ago night—one of a great love, and one of a terrible vengeance…

Review:

Hideaway by Nora Roberts is another one of her wonderful standalone novels.  The story revolves around the Sullivan’s, a famous Hollywood family, with the oldest member, a film legend, having recently died at the age of 92, and many of his children/grandchildren are also Hollywood royalty.  The story begins with a bang, as child star, 10-year-old, Caitlyn Sullivan (Cate), gets kidnapped during a family celebration in Big Sur. After being terrorized, she manages to escape, and ends up at a local ranch who protects her and brings her safely home.  When the police come, they suspect an inside job, and Cate reveals that her mother was the one who told her where to hide during a hide and seek game, and when she was locked up, she heard the man talking on the phone and recognized her mother’s voice.  Everything changes for Cate, as her mother and two others are sent to jail.  She will spend a few years in Ireland with her grandmother, with visits from her father and grandfather.

At 18, she resumes her acting career, and the story revolves around Cate trying to cope with the past, and finding a way move on.  She also keeps contact with the family that helped her years before, and to her surprise, the young boy who helped her, Dillon, turns into a hot young man.  When Cate’s mother, an actress, is released from jail, Cate avoids her like the plague, as she hates her mother; who would do anything to get publicity, including using the media to fake plead apologies to her daughter.

What follows is a wonderful and intense story, as we watch Cate grow and become stronger, even when she starts receiving scary phone calls; as her ordeal is not over. I loved how the family was so loyal and protective of each other; always being there for Cate.  After having some bad relationships, Cate returns home to Big Sur and meets up with Dillon and his family.  In a short time, she and Dillon find themselves falling for each other, but she worries about anyone in her family getting hurt.  The original two members of the police who helped solve the kidnapping years before, suspect some recent murders of those previously involved, might be an act of vengeance.

Hideaway was a wonderful, emotional and intense story that had a bit of everything; family, romance, love, betrayal and vengeance.  I thought Roberts created a wonderful group of secondary characters that made this story even better.  Nora Roberts once again gives us a terrific family saga story that was so very well written.  I suggest you make sure you read Hideaway.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date June 14, 2020

When my college crush, Talbot Richardson, was elected to the United States Senate, I bragged a little too loudly that I knew him.

Oops.

Did I really know the sexiest, slickest guy on campus?

Not a chance in hell.

Unless knowing someone is following them around campus to see which dorm they live in, and which class they have at eight a.m. on Wednesdays.

Oh, and I might have stalked him in the dining hall, too. He liked grilled cheese.

Thanks to my big mouth, the paper I work for now expects me to do a story on him.

Surely he’ll meet with me since we went to college together? Right?

Logical assumption, except that he doesn’t know me from a hole in the wall.

But I wasn’t about to blow my chance with the paper. My gig writing obituaries was not exactly a fulfilling career, especially since I had student loans up to my eyeballs.

I wanted more than obits—I wanted to report on real news, to prove myself, and even to work in the face of danger. A girl’s got to have dreams.

I needed a break. A big one.

So, I was getting an interview with Talbot Richardson if it was the last thing I did, whether I had to beg, borrow, steal, or… even take my panties off.

•••••••

REVIEW: Slick Senator by Mika Lane is a part of the Cocky Hero Club Series, and as a fan of that series I found this a quick and fun read. After reading a few of Mika’s books before, I was extremely excited to get my hands on this one.

Talbot Richardson is the youngest Senator elected in the United States, his Alma mater; George Washington University and currently caught up in a high-profile scandal. A baby scandal. Every reporter and journalist in the country is after his story, but there is only one that holds his attention.

Cricket Curtain (what a name!) is a small-time obit writer from the Washington Chronicle looking to branch out and make a name for herself. After letting it slip that she and the new hot Senator went to the same University and were friends, her editor assigns her to get the inside scoop. Only one problem…..she may have fibbed just a little. She and Talbot were not friends, he was her crush, and he did not even know she existed. Now she had to find away to get her story, no matter what.

What a steamy read! This book has it all, great chemistry, sassy scandal scenes, lusty love moments and even a few cuddly puppy ones. After reading this in a single setting, I found myself hitting Youtube to watch my own cute puppy videos. Best of all it ends with a HEA!

Writing has been a passion of mine since, well, forever (my first book was “The Day I Ate the Milkyway,” a true fourth-grade masterpiece). These days, steamy romance, both dark and funny, gives purpose to my days and nights as I create worlds and characters who defy the imagination. I live in magical Northern California with my own handsome alpha dude, sometimes known as Mr. Mika Lane, and an evil cat named Bill. These two males also defy my imagination from time to time.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date June 8, 2020

In an effort to halt an armed standoff, FBI negotiator Charlotte Blood tries to unravel the mystery of a young woman’s death on a remote mountainside. Pity she has to fight her stubborn, sexy, Hostage Rescue Team counterpart every step of the way.

As a highly skilled operative, HRT leader Payne Novak doesn’t have time to play detective or make nice with killers who flout the law. His focus is getting inside the compound and ending the siege as quickly as possible.

Forced to work together, the battle-hardened HRT team leader and the quietly determined negotiator figure out they might have more in common than they anticipated. As the clock ticks, Charlotte discovers there are some dangers she can’t talk her way out of, and the race to unearth long-buried lies becomes a matter of survival for everyone on the mountain.

•••••••

REVIEW:COLD WICKED LIES is the third instalment in Toni Anderson’s contemporary, adult COLD JUSTICE: CROSSFIRE erotic, romantic suspense series-a a spin off/crossover with the author’s COLD JUSTICE series. This is FBI negotiator Charlotte Blood, and HRT (Hostage Rescue Team) leader Payne Novak’s story line. COLD WICKED LIES can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous instalments or the original series is revealed where necessary.

Told from several third person perspectives including Payne and Charlotte COLD WICKED LIES focuses on a potential hostage situation and armed stand-off with a fortified compound after a US Fish & Wildlife officer is shot, and a young woman is found dead. Enter FBI negotiator Charlotte Blood, and HRT (Hostage Rescue Team) leader Payne Novak. What ensues is the slow building relationship between Payne and Charlotte as they must navigate the cold and blustery forests of Washington State in an effort to stop any further deaths when a number of environmental protestors find themselves caught between a group of end of days zealots, and the FBI.

Meanwhile, the compound members find themselves at an impasse as a fight for leadership is surely a threat to their own safety and numbers. As their current leader Tom Harrison and his eighteen year old son TJ prepare to flee, TJ must face the possibility that not all is well with the people he once called family and friends in the face of a murdered girl that may be connected to the people in charge.

The relationship between Payne Novak and Charlotte Blood begins acrimoniously as both come with preconceived notions about one another. Charlotte is an FBI hostage negotiator who doesn’t like to be considered ‘less than’ capable in a male-oriented environment of wanna-be cowboys and power hungry men, and her first impressions of Payne leave much to be desired. Payne Novak struggles in the face of demons from his past . Ordered to work together in an effort to quell their growing dislike, Payne battles between head and heart as his attraction to Charlotte continues to grow. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

COLD WICKED LIES is a story of power and control; suspense and intrigue; relationship, friendships and love. The premise is dramatic and intense; the slow building romance is seductive; the characters are energetic, capable and charismatic.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date May 29, 2020

Okay, so he wasn’t actually my ex.

August is my best friend’s older brother, and he just went with me to Macy and Gideon’s wedding. You know, friends with no benefits.

Then we ended up having sex at said wedding.

At the reception, not during the actual ceremony. Hello, I have some manners.

We agreed to not do it again. Until I thought I was pregnant. And instead of being upset, I was happy.

Except I wasn’t. Pregnant, that is.

Then I drunk dialed August and asked him to make a baby with me.

On purpose.

I wanted to take it back. To die of shame.

But the next thing I knew, he was at my door…

Author’s note: The hero doesn’t start out as a single father, but practice makes perfect. My Ex’s Baby is a standalone romantic comedy with a HEA ending and no cliffhanger.

••••••••

REVIEW: MY EX’S BABY is the eighth instalment in Taryn Quinn’s (Cari Quinn / Taryn Elliot) contemporary, adult CRESCENT COVE erotic, romance series focusing on the small town of Crescent Cove. This is furniture maker August Beck , and shop owner Kinleigh Scott’s story line. MY EX’S BABY can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous instalments is revealed where necessary.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Kinleigh and August) MY EX’S BABY follows the friends to lovers relationship between furniture maker August Beck , and shop owner Kinleigh Scott. August Beck has been in love with his sister’s best friend for as long as he can remember and sharing retail space finds Kinleigh always on his radar and on his mind. A one-night stand following Macy and Gideon’s wedding (Daddy in Disguise #7) meant getting up close and personal with the woman he loved but August never expected Kinleigh to push away any thoughts of a future until our heroine suggest a baby, together. What ensues is the building relationship between Kinleigh and August, and the potential fall-out as Kinleigh struggles with demons from the past, and the fear of losing her best friends in the process.

The relationship between Kinleigh and August is a friends to lover…there is NO ex’s baby so the title is a bit of a distraction. August is desperate for a relationship with our story line heroine but Kinleigh continues to be oblivious, pushing August away, yet pulling him in as she battles between head and heart. The back and forth is disconcerting to our story line hero-Kinleigh’s mixed messages begin to threaten her friendship with August as August begins to rethink their time together but Kinleigh has kept her past a secret, a past that continues to control her life. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

There is a large ensemble cast of colorful and flirty secondary and supporting characters including several couples from the previous story lines: Gideon and Macy, Murphy ‘Moose’ Masterson (Baby Daddy Wanted #5), Ivy and Rory (Rockstar Baby #6) . We are reintroduced to Sheriff Jared Brooks, and August and Ivy’s brother Caleb.

MY EX’S BABY is a story of family, friendships, heart break and love. The premise is emotional and inviting; the romance is spicy and sensitive; the characters are spirited and inspiring.

A Scot to Wed by Callie Hutton – a Review

A Scot to Wed by Callie Hutton – a Review

Amazon / B&N / Kobo / Google Play / Apple

Description:
Highlander Laird Evan MacNeil cannot believe Mistress Katie Sterling just shows up at the MacDuff castle with this faded piece of parchment laying claim to the lands he just legally inherited. Not that he really wants to be here in the lowlands, but he has responsibilities to his clan and the exasperating Katie has uprooted the remnants of her father’s clan and moved them across the country to live here. There’s no way he can leave to go back home now.

Katie has nowhere else to go and she refuses to bow down to the arrogant yet undeniably handsome Highlander. She’s had enough with men trying to control her and she is quite capable of handling herself.

Now that Evan must spar with a beautiful lass for the rights to the lands, he will fight to the end. This battle is nothing like the ones his ancestors fought with crossbows and boiling oil. They never wanted to bed the enemy.

Review:

A Scot to Wed, book 2 of Callie Hutton‘s Scottish Hearts series, was a battle of wills over the true owner of an inherited castle. Too bad squatter rights don’t apply here, but then again, Evan and Katie would still be at a dead heat.  Both have nebulous petitions, his by “some intricate web of family ties”, a stretch to be sure, while she clings to “proof of ownership”, and discretely escaping from the clutches of a vile man claiming her as his betrothed.  If only these two could compromise ?, surely there’s a mutually beneficial arrangement?

A laird in his own right, Evan tours the castle grounds with Katie to inspect its maintenance, sans land steward.  While engaging the tenants, Evan is in effect vetting Katie, observing her approach, how she resolved matters and assisted with local concerns/issues.  Truth is, Katie is running circles around Evan, she’s so capable.  Before long, Katie is the logical choice, amenable, considerate, and a healer to boot!  Now if there was only something Evan could do about his sudden fierce attraction to the lass, he could be on his way back home.  Katie’s matched interest had “verra” good potential to explore.

This was hardly a cat and mouse pursuit, lol.  Evan gave in to desire and a protest from Katie “didna” part her lips.  Sure, a few misunderstandings and heavy-handedness stymied their connection, but I was surprised by how straightforward and sweet this was.  Tenant squabbles and personality clashes, indeed, but I always found their mindset of an even keel.  A Scot to Wed?  Yes, as a matter of fact, it happens.

I’m a fan of Ms. Hutton, already eager for her next offering, but this story just wasn’t the exciting, give-me-more-details-now storytelling of its predecessor.  A bump on the road to HEA will rear its ugly head with insidious motives, but is Evan invested enough to intervene or too willing to return to his own clan?  Will Katie face the challenge unaided, to finally prove herself?  The answers are all in here to discover!

The Benefactor (See No Evil #2) by Nana Malone-Review tour

The Benefactor (See No Evil #2) by Nana Malone-Review & Excerpt tour

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / B&N / KOBO / Google Play / Apple /

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date June 9, 2020

I am many things. billionaire, rogue, rebel. But I never figured myself for a thief. My money can buy power, control, access. Even oaths of loyalty. The one thing it can’t buy is her…or her safety. I vowed to protect her… I failed… I can’t, under any circumstances, fail again. In order to save her, I’ll have to give up the one thing that I value most–control. The Canary Jewel is the key. Tonight I am no longer a billionaire. Tonight I keep new secrets. My name is Ben Covington and tonight, I am a thief.

•••••••

REVIEW: THE BENEFACTOR is the second instalment in Nana Malone’s contemporary, adult SEE NO EVIL erotic, romantic suspense trilogy focusing on billionaire businessman Ben Covington, and operations director Olivia Ashong. THE BENEFACTOR should not be read as a stand alone as it picks up immediately after the events and cliff-hanger of book one BIG BEN.

NOTE: If you have not read book one, there may be some spoilers in my review

SOME BACKGROUND: Ben Covington, and his friends East Hale and Bridge Edgerton call themselves the London Lords, and are members of the Elite, closely connected to the Uber rich and powerful of Eton Academy in London England, but the murder of their best friend Toby ten years earlier, finds Ben focusing on the men responsible, in an attempt to destroy them all.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Ben and Olivia) THE BENEFACTOR follows several intersecting paths including the building but acrimonious relationship between Olivia and Ben. Olivia is a woman on a mission to complete her late mother’s book that has now placed a target on our heroine’s back but to complicate her life even further, Olivia’s relationship with Ben Covington places our heroine in the direct line of fire as Ben continues his vendetta against the Elite in an effort to gain control of the Director Prime. As Ben, East and Bridge put together a plan to take down the Van Linsted family, who for the past thirty years have controlled the Elite, Olivia finds herself struggling with the information her mother has uncovered, and the possible connections to Eton Academy. What ensues is the ongoing relationship between Ben and Olivia, and the potential fall-out as our couple have crossed a dangerous line of dark secrets and lies.

At the end of book one BIG BEN, Olivia must face the reality that her life is no longer under her control but our fiercely independent heroine has yet to realize that danger is her new partner, and her relationship with Ben struggles with Olivia’s need to go it alone. Ben is fiercely protective of Olivia Ashong and affording her protection meant keeping secret the truth about the how and why. Olivia’s discovery of Ben’s need for control finds our couple facing off against one another as Olivia continues to place herself in the direct line of fire.

The relationship between Olivia and Ben continues to grow; a palpable sexual attraction that must weather Ben’s need to protect the woman he loves, and Olivia’s need to remain independent regardless of her safety or threats to her life. The $ex scenes are intimate, passionate and intense without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

There is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters including several from many of the author’s other series and stories: Alexi Chase (Chase Brothers series); Lucas and Bryna (Royals Undone Series); Sebastian and Penny (Royals Undercover Series); Jessa and Roone (Royals United Series), as well as Olivia’s ex boyfriend Dexter, his boss Fenton Mills, and her friend and hacker Telly; Olivia’s driver Todd, and Ben’s father.

From the outset, the first half of THE BENEFACTOR was choppy, and the flow felt rough and uneven. It was not until about fifty percent did the story settle, did the relationship and story take on a more measured and balanced tone. Also, Olivia’s struggle for independence came across as spiteful and vindictive- being a strong woman does not mean she has to be a b*tch.

THE BENEFACTOR is a story of lies and betrayal; of a secret society whose membership is rich, dark, dangerous and sexually deviant; and of one woman who struggles to keep her independence in the face of danger and death. The fast paced premise is intriguing, imaginative and complex; the romance is spicy and hot; the characters are strong, dynamic and spirited but I did struggle with a few issues. THE BENEFACTOR ends on a cliff hanger-you have been warned.

“You’ll have to trust me.” “Right. Trust the man who hides so much.” “You kept things to yourself too.” He ground his teeth, and I could see the muscle of his jaw working. Which unfortunately also drew my attention to his lips. And I could remember his taste, spicy on my tongue. The way he kissed, first with a sip that made you want to quench your thirst in one gulp. The slow, drugging kisses designed to make a woman moan without much effort. Jesus, I needed to stop. I would not think about him kissing me, or him lifting up my skirt, bending me over the desk and spanking me. Nope, I was not going to think about that. “From now on, no more lies. I can’t take it. I need to know what you know.” He narrowed his gaze at me then. “Got any more copies of this that you’re hiding from me?” “Oh, nice. Real mature. That’s the only one. I’ve just given you my insurance policy; you have to give me yours.” “No more lies.” “Fine. And while we’re at it, can we get security for Telly and Carmen? Todd has heard me talk about them on the phone before. I don’t want them to be targets.” The muscle in his jaw ticked. “Fine.” I shifted on my feet. Do or die time. “Also, I’m not sure of the living arrangements. I don’t think I can go back to the loft.” “You’ll be staying with me at Covington House.” The way he said that, like a command, not a suggestion. That beautiful house with the pillars and the kitchen right out of Architecture Magazine. I hadn’t seen much of the space, but I would love to explore it. My brain slapped my pussy. Snap out of it, bitch. You’re not playing house. I cleared my throat. “I’ll accept because I have no choice. But so you know, if I had a choice, I’d be anywhere else but there.” He approached slowly, as if he had all the time in the world. His smooth gait was catlike as he approached. The moment I could feel his heat I tried to back away. I knew I was weak. I’d lean in and sniff given half a chance. Stay strong. Stay strong. “If it makes you feel better to say that, fine. But let me be clear. You and I, we’re not done. The conversation about us is still to be continued.” I swallowed hard. Because that sounded so much like a warning. One my body didn’t want to heed. I said nothing as I turned to head to my office. I wasn’t going to let him see in my gaze that I wanted to stay.

USA Today bestseller Nana Malone’s love of all things romance and adventure started with a tattered romantic suspense she “borrowed” from her cousin.

It was a sultry summer afternoon in Ghana, and Nana was a precocious thirteen. She’s been in love with kick butt heroines ever since. With her overactive imagination, and channeling her inner Buffy, it was only a matter a time before she started creating her own characters.

While she waits for her chance at a job as a ninja assassin, in the meantime Nana works out her drama, passion, and sass with fictional characters every bit as sassy and kick butt as she thinks she is.

Simply a Matter of Time by Kathryn K. Murphy – a Review

Simply a Matter of Time by Kathryn Murphy – a Review

Amazon / B&N / BAM / Book Depository

Description:
Ethan Brooks has led an extremely long double life, one that always felt stable and secure—until he crossed paths with Nora St. Clair. Suddenly, the dogged police lieutenant is invading his office in her quest for answers about the mysterious Brightrock Island he hails from, an idyllic community off the coast of Massachusetts and home to a literal fountain of youth. Sworn to secrecy about his hometown, Ethan must protect the truth about the mysterious island and those who live there at any cost. But that’s easier said than done as Nora captures Ethan’s attention like no one ever has, upending his carefully cultivated life.

Resident Lizzy Brooks is enjoying her first taste of freedom from Brightrock Island after almost fifty years when Nora’s investigation throws everything into chaos, trashing Lizzy’s dreams when they’ve only just begun. With the clock ticking, Lizzy only has a few short weeks to explore what might’ve been a grand, romantic adventure with Caleb Broussard, her only connection outside the island. But this quiet, kind man whom Lizzy thought she knew has secrets of his own, ones that could impact everything.

Now Ethan and Lizzy are both on borrowed time. But as Nora gets closer to uncovering the truth, Brightrock’s elders deliver an ultimatum: return home or leave the island forever, forcing Lizzy and Ethan to choose between their loves—or their lives.

Review:

Simply a Matter of Time by Kathryn Murphy is two stories for the price of one….

Ethan is the island’s financial wizard. He’s been doing it for long enough. He’s gotten comfortable with his life, but that’s about to change, and he’s not happy….

Nora is a detective, she’s looking into a case concerning the island and in particular Ethan’s brother. She wants answers and Ethan is the man to give them to her, but he’s being evasive, and now he’s on the move. She’s got no choice but to let it go, but that’s not in her nature…..

Elizabeth “Lizzy” has waited forever to start her degree as a doctor, and now the elders are calling her back, it’s not fair! But Izzy isn’t going down without a fight, she’s going missing, and she knows exactly where she’s going ……

Caleb met Lizzy briefly, he thinks there is a connection, so when he gets a call from her to meet up, he wants the chance to find out if she feels the same way…..

And when Ethan finds out Nora has been injured, why does he react the way he does? Is the fact she’s injured in a bomb blast that reminds him of the incident at Brightrock the trigger, or is the lovely lady herself?

And when Lizzy finds out Caleb’s secret, will she look at him differently? And can they make it work if she has to go back to the island?

Beautifully written. The book starts not long after the last book, so you could read it without reading the first one, but I feel you’d be missing why Nora is stalking Ethan.  We get to catch up with old characters. You get to feel Izzy’s frustration at being recalled back to Brightrock Island. You understand why she runs away, but is Caleb the right person to run too? He has his own demons to battle, and where will it take them?

The interaction between Nora and Ethan is great, his reluctance to also return to the island is felt. And I love the banter between Ethan and Nora, it’s had me chuckling a few times through the book.

I would have liked two books instead of one, as I felt gaps were missing when we jumped to each couple. We have a few twists in the book, we also have a few moments when I thought both couples would walk away from each other.

Simply a Matter of Time was a really good read. And I totally recommend it.

“Make your move now or one of us will ask her out.”

Once Dinah walks next door, she finds the party in full swing. She knows most in attendance as they have become her circle of friends too. Noah and T.J. are hockey players and a lot of their fellow teammates are there as well. Dinah considers herself lucky to have these people as her friends, especially Noah. She lost her husband a couple of years before to a terrible car accident. Immediately after, she discovered she was pregnant, only to have a miscarriage that almost killed her. Had Noah not found her passed out in the stairwell of their building, she would not have survived. He took her to the E.R. and stayed with her the whole time. Neither had ever breathed a word to anyone else about what had happened. Dinah had never even told her family.

Noah was always glad to see Dinah. Unknown to anyone else, or, so he thought, he had been in love with Dinah for a long time but has always done it from afar. Things were changing though……his friends knew he was in love with her and they told him to make his move, or get out of their way. Needless to say, that didn’t go over well.

As Noah starts to make his move, Dinah finds herself surprised. After all, why would a younger man want to be with her? The two of them begin to navigate a relationship once he convinces her that he is serious. However, through a series of events, Dinah finds herself scared and does the only thing she can think of to protect herself….run. Both are miserable without the other and have to decide if, indeed, they will take the shot.

Take the Shot is a nicely written story by Flynn. Both of the main characters were pretty well written. Dinah is strong, smart and independent. Noah is an old soul, a gentleman and very protective. The chemistry between the two of them, however, was almost tentative. I liked them together, but something was just a little disjointed for me. The secondary characters leave you wanting more of their story, which is always a plus. All, in all, this was a good start for the Philadelphia Bulldogs series and I can’t wait to read the next one in the series. Well done, Danica Flynn!
